Poor Quality Hardware

In Spotlight Following Cumbrian Flood Door Failings

With a recent BBC news report highlighting numerous failures in flood doors which were fitted into Cumbrian homes as part of a major flood resilience programme, Rapierstar is advising flood door manufacturers and installers to seek specialist guidance on the types of fasteners being used to ensure long term performance promises and customer satisfaction not compromised. Flood doors are rapidly establishing themselves as a crucial product for making UK homes more flood resilient, in line with government strategy to cope with the increasing risks of flooding as a result of new building developments on flood plains and sea level rises. However, flood doors must be able to perform in the long term and, given the particularly challenging conditions the doors have to withstand, the quality of components, materials

and installation methods must be flawless. Whilst a number of the issues in the Cumbrian flood resilience scheme, implemented following the devastating Storm Desmond in 2015, relate to locking mechanisms, the potential for fasteners to cause the failure of a flood door is high unless austenitic stainless steel are used. Fasteners manufactured from this type of metal – usually grades A2 or A4 – offer the highest level of resistance to corrosion throughout a door’s service life of more than twenty years. David Furness, MD of Rapierstar says: “The flood door market offers excellent opportunities for growth when you consider that 5.2 million homes are considered ‘at risk’ of flooding in England alone, according to the Environment Agency. With so much po-

tential, and significant investment already by a number of systems manufacturers and fabricators, we have to ensure there are no weaknesses that could mean a flood door fails to deliver on its promise – and that requires scrutiny of every component. “Because the fasteners are the smallest components, it’s easy to take them for granted. But with flood doors being exposed to the harshest of environments, especially in areas with regular flood events, it’s vital that the most durable fasteners are used to avoid handles, hinges, locking systems and other hardware becoming loose or detached. This will help to minimise the risk of remedial work being necessary and protect the reputation of the flood door concept and their suppliers.” www.rapierstar.com WINDOW NEWS MAY 2019 9

Shrinking Margins In 2019?

ExtrudaSeal has warned that return visits for failed aluminium bi-fold, inline sliding and window gaskets are costing installers thousands of pounds a year in avoidable call-backs.

lost productivity and cost.

According to the specialist extruder, the use of lower quality TPE extrusions in some aluminium systems is leading to a gasket shrinkage ‘crisis’.

This is because as a gasket specialist, Extrudaseal has developed a unique manufacturing process and material composition, which almost eliminates shrinkage in gasket entirely, the company claims.

This is eroding installer margins at a time when their overheads are going up, argues Paul James, Sales Director, Extrudaseal. “As an installer your single biggest overhead is labour”, he says. “Wage price inflation means that every call back is costing you more and more in 10 WINDOW NEWS MAY 2019

“The crazy thing is that installers could avoid the call backs and save money by buying from Extrudaseal direct.”

“As a starting point, we use a higher quality material composition, which is more forgiving to begin with. We also extrude it with a chord which in common with other systems, is designed to prevent the gasket from being over-stretched during installation.

“It means as long as you thumb it in properly, we can almost eliminate any risk of shrinkage. That means no call backs and no erosion of margin.” Manufacturing more than 20,000km of aluminum door gaskets in the last year, Extrudaseal’s product offer is also available in more than 1000 RAL colours. This allows fabricators and installers to offer a colour-matched gasket and a perfect match to the increasingly diverse colour options being offered by window companies. In addition to improved performance, fabricators and installers save on average 30 to 40% on the cost of gasket compared to buying it in from their systems company. “We aren’t value-engineering by using lower quality product. We’re in fact doing the opposite engineering in value but reducing cost by cutting out the middle man”, adds Paul. www.extrudaseal.com

Get Smart Ready Working In

Tandem To Provide

Top Quality ‘Unique partnerships’ and ‘special relationships’ are often talked about in our industry, as well as many others. The world is getting smarter with a £10.8bn predicted spend on smart home devices in 2019, but to date windows and doors have been lagging well behind heating, lighting and entertainment when it comes to getting Smart. But Smart Ready® is about to super charge Smart onto every window and door forever, says the company. Giovanni Laporta is the innovator behind Smart Ready® and explains why its launch is set to deliver an epic turning point for the industry as a whole: “We’re launching the Smart Ready® system at the FIT Show 2019 in May because it’s relevant for every single window and door being manufactured today, at the very least to be Ready to be Smart. “The system allows manufacturers to future proof all their windows and doors with no effort. Smart Ready® more

than satisfies the two most important commercial areas, time for fabrication and cost, so the concept is set to be the biggest change seen by the industry in modern times, claims the company. “I’ve been lucky enough to accumulate a unique blend of years of experience in the window and door industry as a whole, as well as many years of experience in the wider technology sector, which has allowed me to come up with a Smart system that is right for the industry right now, as well as future proof for many years ahead. The Smart Ready® system will be available on all windows and doors. “Smart is coming to everyone in 2019. See us at the FIT Show on stand M20.” For more information visit smartready.com

However, we’re also customers of Liniar, as they actually manufacture many of our products for us. “We’ve found that this arrangement works exceptionally well and is very beneficial to both companies. We chose Liniar because they’re renowned for high quality manufacturing and we only use the best for our products. “Liniar can also be assured that any windows and doors that their fabricators produce featuring our GeoFast bars are going to benefit from the exact same standards of manufacturing, while also providing a perfect colour match.” www.geofast.co.uk WINDOW NEWS MAY 2019 11

TRADE NEWS develop the GLASS Charter – the GGF’s health and safety scheme to help you provide a safer working environment on site, in factories and during transit. • Launched a new intranet system to improve internal communications and enhance staff engagement and to develop greater team work. • Established three distinct political strategies for fire safety, energy efficiency, skills and training. The renewed political focus on these topical areas benefits not just GGF Members but the entire industry.

Significant Progress

Kevin Buckley

On His First 12 Months In April 2018, the Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF) appointed Kevin Buckley as interim Group Chief Executive with the appointment being made permanent in October 2018. 12 months on and Kevin is pleased with the success so far as he marks the progress the GGF has made under his tenure.

individuals that contribute to the Federation.”

“We have made great strides in the last 12 months, as we continue to deliver key benefits for Members. It’s fair to say that when I became Group Chief Executive, I was very familiar with the GGF commercial subsidiaries but had less knowledge of the industry and the Federation. In the last twelve months, my views have been transformed. I’m continually amazed at the breadth and depth of the GGF Membership and of the loyalty and commitment of the many passionate

• Expanded and reconfigured the GGF Regional team with two new Regional Managers as the GGF’s continues to facilitate over 40 regional meetings per year which attract both existing and new Members.

14 WINDOW NEWS MAY 2019

In the last 12 months, the significant progress the GGF has achieved is clearly evident. In the short space of time the industry’s leading trade body has a considerable list of achievements including:

• Launched the GGF Training programme with accredited courses for installers and surveyors to enhance performance in the workplace. • Continued to promote and

• Created a new External Affairs department to focus more on media relations, political relationships and PR. • Worked closely with government on issues associated with Brexit – an area the GGF is constantly updating as the timeframes and implementation shifts. • Rejuvenated the approach and activities of the GGF Heritage Group to help businesses overcome the restrictions imposed by local authorities on companies operating in the heritage or conservation sectors. • Launched new GGF Brand guidelines and a new sharper logo • Launched the new GGF website – making it easier to navigate across all digital devices and platforms • Recruited over 50 new Members into membership • Launched a new Members only fortnightly e-newsletter called “Members First” to ensure that all Members receive GGF news first and in a clear and easy format. • Hosted and organised high profile events including Members Day and the recent President’s

TRADE NEWS Reception. These are just some of the outstanding projects the GGF Staff has delivered and continue to deliver for Members. In the next few months the Federation also plans to have a strong presence at major exhibitions including FIT Show, FIREX, Glass Performance Days and VITRUM. At these events the GGF will be presenting seminars, imparting technical expertise, promoting best practice, engaging with the industry and also continuing to bring more companies into the GGF Membership as part of their recruitment strategy. In addition the GGF is also planning a ‘new Members’ introduction event for the 4th July, and has special features planned for Members Day 2019 in September that will include an exciting networking event on the evening before, hosted at the London ‘Museum of Brands’. Kevin emphasised the importance of listening to Members as he continued; “One thing that I have found most worthwhile this last 12 months, has been discussing GGF activities with our Members and listening to comments and suggestions. A common misperception is that the GGF senior staff don’t visit Members often enough and don’t value their views. I know the GGF team come into contact with hundreds of Members and I believe that making myself available to Members in various forums, talking about what I am doing and listening to opinions is one of the most important aspects of my role. I have made it a personal objective to do this and since my appointment, I have visited Members both individually and through attending many of the GGF’s Regional, Technical and Members’ meetings.” One area where the GGF is making great progress is in market

research. In 2018, almost 20 different surveys were conducted and the results are proving to be extremely useful for the Federation, with data that highlights market trends and provides a greater understanding of the level of concern over industry issues. It has also proved to be practical as Kevin explains. “The shortage of skilled labour and training is a real concern for most of the industry. Last year, we reviewed our Members’ Perception Survey and we have since shaped our strategies around the responses. For example, the training courses for installers and surveyors that we now offer, have been created as a direct result of what our Members said they wanted in the survey.” Though a lot of work has been done, Kevin is keen to point out that it’s only the beginning of the GGF’s long term strategies. “For the rest of this year and into next year, we will increase our technical resource and publish more technical documents. We will also develop and promote our training courses and will be launching a new suite of health and safety publications. Added to this we will continue to drive our political campaigns, build stronger relationships and develop synergies with like-minded organisations. There’s lots more to do and much more to come, as we make it our mission to continue to provide better services and improve the trading environment for GGF Members and the wider industry.” Kevin Buckley will be presenting on the industry issues at FIT Show 2019 at Birmingham NEC on 21st May. You can book your place at this seminar which starts at 10.30 in the Insights Theatre (Hall 20) by visiting: www.fitshow.co.uk/sessions-2019#/seminars/

Sound Advice From Norseal

Door seal specialist Norseal has taken the hard work out of finding the right acoustic door seal with the launch of the latest version of its Acoustic Selector. They have carried out more than 400 sound attenuating tests with a variety of door types and seal configurations, so that specifiers can quickly and easily find the perfect door and seal combination to match their project’s acoustic requirements. Doors with an acoustic rating are being increasingly specified in commercial, healthcare, education and industrial settings, as well as residential. Whilst the structure of sound attenuating doors is clearly vital, many are let down by the seals selected. Ordinary fin or brush seals simply will not do the job of blocking sound from passing through the gaps around the door so Norseal supplies a range of acoustic seals solutions including its feature-packed Complete Sealing System which provides smoke and draft protection as well as acoustic insulation around the full perimeter of most sliding door applications. The Norseal Acoustic Selector is now said to be smarter and easier to use than ever with all acoustic test reports and production information in one place. Smart filters refine the search criteria with easy-to-use toggles, sliders and checkboxes. Once the correct seal has been identified it is easy to download a CAD, fitting guide or certification for any seal configuration. www.norseal.co.uk 18 WINDOW NEWS MAY 2019

Tradesmith Sees Demand Rise For

Ultraframe Conservatories Sussex window and door manufacturer Tradesmith is seeing demand increase for superior conservatories thanks to its partnership with Ultraframe. The impressive range includes nine different designs, from traditional Lanterns to contemporary ‘Livin Room’ orangery-styles. Each conservatory is individually manufactured by the fast-growing trade fabricator, with full in-house design and support from start to finish.

“Our installer customers are always looking for products that will give them a competitive edge,” explains Mark Hutchinson, MD of Tradesmith, “and Ultraframe’s are hard to beat. It’s been a very successful partnership for us, as the high-end conservatory and orangery products perfectly complement our other ranges. The Ultrasky roof in particular goes down well. It means installers can give homeowners something special for a comparatively small upgrade in cost. The system includes an internal insulated pelmet which creates an orangery feel inside and creates the perfect housing for spotlights and speakers.”

Ultraframe Marketing Director, Alex Hewitt, said: “It’s fantastic to work with forward thinking companies such as Tradesmith who embrace the Ultraframe product range and use it to create stunning living spaces such as orangeries. We constantly invest in our product range and our systems can be used to create everything from flatroofed extension to orangeries and modern or traditional conservatories. Tradesmith are huge advocates of our internal pelmet system which allows for an orangery look on the interior – it’s no surprise to us that they are seeing demand for these top end products increase and we wish them every ongoing success.”

Mark continues: “The South East has a large number of homeowners who are looking for a wider variety of high-quality products and services to add value and kerb appeal to their properties. Thanks to our relationships with companies such as Ultraframe, Tradesmith can help installers looking to make the most of this opportunity.” www.tradesmith.co.uk

Fire Door Installation Training Pays Dividends

For The Window Company (Contracts)

It was The Window Company (Contracts)’ proven expertise in fire door installation which helped it secure a contract to replace 70 steel fire doors at the 16-storey William Blake House in London’s Soho district.

The Chelmsford based commercial installation specialist has been investing in fire door training and certification for its fitting teams since early 2016 and is authorised to issue all the relevant certification to clients. This, combined with an established reputation working on behalf of Osborne Property Services who were carrying out major planned works at the block, was a key factor in it being entrusted to fit the fire doors throughout the 1960s built block.

The Window Company (Contracts) has installed fire doors in all of the communal areas at William Blake House to ensure that it complies fully with the most up to date, post-Grenfell fire safety legislation. Company Chairman David Thornton says this is typical of the types of projects it is now getting involved in: “While there is still no legal requirement for installers to be certified to fit fire doors, clients and contractors are nevertheless increasingly recognising how important it is to use only experienced, highly trained installers like ourselves. We think that the quality of the installation is as important as the quality of the fire door itself and are backing efforts to make the type of training and certification which our team have undergone via the UKAS accred-

ited IFC (International Fire Consultants) mandatory across the industry.”

William Blake House was built in the mid 1960s on the site of the birthplace of the famous English artist and poet. Sited within the Soho conservation area just a short distance from Carnaby Street, it is one of the flagship properties owned and managed by City West Homes. As well as replacing the fire doors, the work carried out by Osborne also included the installation of a new green roof and communal roof space for residents of the 72 flats. Window To The Future

For Specialist Glazing Firm A WAKEFIELD business woman is urging other small manufacturers to follow in her footsteps and find out for themselves how seemingly futuristic technology could help improve their productivity. Margaret Wood, Chairman of bespoke window and glazing manufacturer ICW (UK) Ltd, visited the University of Sheffield’s Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) with her Managing Director Stephen Chapman to gain insights into what the future could hold for UK manufacturing. “The purpose of the visit was to look at the use of technology to enhance productivity and performance for SME manufacturers,” said Margaret who is also a Non-Executive Director for the High Value Manufacturing Catapult and a member of the Government’s Made Smarter Commission. 22 WINDOW NEWS MAY 2019

She was given a guided tour of the AMRC’s Factory 2050 in Sheffield by its Head of Digital, Professor Rab Scott, who said: “It was great to show Margaret and Stephen that industrial digitalisation is not just for the big players and that starting out on the digital journey can be relatively cheap and easy to adopt by even the smallest of companies. We work with a wide range of SMEs who want to explore how robotics and automation, augmented and virtual reality, sensors and data analytics can drive improvements in their operations.” Margaret and Stephen were shown how inexpensive sensors had been retrofitted to a 70-year-old lathe allowing data to be displayed on a simple-to-read dashboard providing operators with crucial information about the performance of the machinery. “So many SMEs believe that technology digitalisation is not for

them but Factory 2050 shows how futuristic technology invested in by global manufacturers such as Rolls-Royce and Boeing can be adapted to meet the needs and budgets of SMEs as well,” Margaret said. “Work is already ongoing with small businesses to improve their productivity by removing a lot of the repetitious nature of the manufacturing process. With many SMEs it’s a case of needing to work smarter. Industry 4.0 is about using modern technology to make manufacturing more efficient and competitive in the UK. As we come out of the EU we will be competing in a global marketplace; we cannot compete with the likes of China where there is so much more labour unless we make it smarter.” Margaret added: “A lot of the Catapult’s work relates to the transfer of technology so the visit was a great opportunity for me to see this in action and support it while also having my eyes opened, and those of my colleague Stephen, to the future possibilities that this could bring to our own small business.”

Distinctive Doors Adorning A New

Set Of Frames

When family run manufacturer FrameMaker Windows decided to form a new partnership with Distinction Doors in summer 2018, they were pleased to learn that quality products were evenly matched with quality customer service.

The move came after Director Tim Buxton explored the level of workmanship delivered by the Barnsley based firm, who are now regular suppliers of a range of superior yet competitively priced doors. He explains: “The decision to change supplier and begin a partnership with Distinction Doors eight months ago was the perfect move for our business, on several fronts. A smooth transition with simple processes meant that administratively, our

staff knew precisely what was happening, and when. The support from Distinction Doors’ resulted in a quick, well supported changeover, which most importantly, caused no interruptions to the day to day service we offer. Such a positive experience really set us off on the right foot and has most definitely been maintained since.

“We have made full use of the prepping service Distinction offers, utilising their expertise alongside our own to provide door sets which meet customers’ exact specifications in the most cost and time efficient ways.” FrameMaker typically purchase standard blanks and products from Distinction’s nxt-gen range. With over 200% more products regularly in stock, it’s clear why one

Atlas Lantern 2.0 Credited

of Leicester’s top trade manufacturers chose them as their newest partner. Tim is especially satisfied with the expertise and knowledge proffered by the technical team: “One of the biggest assets we have discovered is the Distinction team’s great customer communication. They truly go above and beyond, supporting the staff in our factory with any questions, however small. Their technical team understand each product intimately, which means that the ongoing service we provide to our own domestic and trade customers is just as high in quality. The working relationship we have developed feels like it has always existed.” www.distinctiondoors.co.uk

Atlas Glazed Roof Solutions has credited its new Lantern 2.0 for helping the business achieve exceptional sales in the first quarter of 2019. Atlas Q1 figures were up by 26% on last year.

Justin Stone, managing director at Lumina Design, says: “We’re really impressed with the new Lantern 2.0 from Atlas. We sell to the trade and the DIY homeowner, so it’s vital that our products are very straightforward to fit and the new Atlas lantern couldn’t be easier. I say if a customer can put together a piece of flat pack furniture then they can definitely install an Atlas lantern – it’s that simple.”

“This is the slimmest, lightest, finest looking and most thermally efficient lantern that we’ve ever created and our first quarter figures prove that these are exactly the qualities that homeowners and installers want in a lantern,” said Gareth Thomas, sales and marketing director at Atlas Glazed Roof Solutions.

With the new Lantern added to its portfolio, Lumina is on course to achieve year on year growth of at least 15% this year. “This is our sixth year in business and our sustained growth during that time is in no small part down to our partnership with Atlas and the products they make,” adds Justin. www.atlasroofsolutions.co.uk

With Rise In Q1 Sales

One of the first customers to sell the new Atlas lantern was Bridgend-based Lumina Design and, as a leading national online supplier of glazed roof products, the firm is selling an average of 50 of them a month.

Window and door fastener specialist Rapierstar is creating a new state-of-the-art Learning & Development Centre dedicated to boosting the essential technical skills and knowledge required by its customers and supply chain partners to achieve superior window and door quality. The new 2,500 sq. ft. facility, located within its head office complex near Macclesfield, will be the first of its kind by a UK fastener supplier in the sector. The expertise and resources available here will also help fabricators to manufacture more efficiently and profitability whilst staying compliant with the latest technical and legislative standards. The Learning & Development Centre will play a pivotal role in enhancing fastener knowledge and application skills, putting Rapierstar’s 150 years of collective technical know-how at the heart of a hub that brings together window fabricators, profile extrusion companies, leading hardware 26 WINDOW NEWS MAY 2019

The new facility will also be home to Rapierstar’s expanded Research & Development and quality testing centre. This will build on the success of the current facility, which has been supporting customers for 27 years to help them realise their new product development ambitions, including security design or long term performance specifications. In addition to the technical resources, the Learning & Development Centre will feature a trade showroom, complete with the full range of Rapierstar point of sale materials available to customers. These displays and marketing collateral will be manufactured on-site and can be tailored to specific requirements. David Furness, MD of Rapierstar says: “Fastener selection plays such an important role in the success of every window or door, which is why we are investing in the industry’s only learning and development resource of its kind. It is imperative that fabricators, installers, profile and hardware manufacturers can easily access expertise on the different types of fasteners and fixings available, helping them to avoid risks of failure and also to open up new opportunities to improve windows and doors. That’s what our new Learning and Development Centre will offer. “It is easy to overlook the importance of the fastener because it is a tiny component within a finished window or door, but so many problems in the installed product are caused by incorrect fastener choice. The knowledge and resources available in our new facility will help to ensure these issues can be avoided, preventing costly call-backs and even more costly reputational damage.” The project is supported by The Skills & Growth Company, who has worked with Rapierstar previously on a range of recruitment and training initiatives, along with the LEADER Programme, a part of the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development that supports enterprise and economic development in rural communities. The new Learning & Development Centre is being constructed next to Rapierstar’s 100,000 sq. ft. warehouse and central distribution centre, which holds a stock of more than one billion window and door fasteners. www.rapierstar.com

Sales Boost Delivers A Fitting

4th Birthday Present

For Gold Oak A Black Country double glazing specialist is celebrating its 4th birthday in style after doubling sales over the last twelve months.

Double R Glass & Roofing Systems Ltd has seen sales soar in Q1 across all products including glass, decorative and roofs. Double R’s Managing Director, Ian Sims explains: “We’re thrilled to have had such a strong start to 2019, with our glass sales up 26% and roof sales up 16% for the period, but it’s thanks to the hard work of the entire team at Double R that we are seeing such great results. There has been a lot of change at Double R in the last few years, including significant investment in the first fully automated vertical Super Spacer Hot Melt line of its kind in the UK, which while a huge coup for us, has meant implementing a completely different way of working in our glass factory. More recently we have also recruited several new employees including a new Manufacturing Manager to further improve efficiency on the factory floor. “On the conservatory side of the business we have invested in bringing to market new products

such as the R-Light Lantern and continue to offer our conservatory roof installers over and above support to ensure they have everything they need for any project they’re asked to quote for. No matter what size or shape of roof required, we have the experience and knowhow to deliver. “In December last year, we took home first prize for Glass Company of the Year in the much-coveted G-Awards for putting customers first and continuously improving our offering. This is an approach we apply to the whole business and it’s an approach that’s particularly welcomed amidst the uncertainty we continue to see within our market place and in the wider economy. We’ve got lots more developments planned for 2019 including another new product launch on the horizon, so we’re looking forward to building on this strong start to the year for us and our customers.” www.glassandroofs.com

Gold Oak Windows, which is run by local entrepreneur Ian Palmer, has seen turnover rise to £350,000 after winning a string of new residential and commercial contracts from across the West Midlands. The company is combining its family-run ethos and outstanding levels of customer service with a wide selection of high-quality doors and windows and this approach has also helped its founder become the Official Checkatrade Trophy Tradesperson for Wolverhampton Wanderers. As part of its expansion, the firm has created three new jobs with a new fitting team and invested in a dedicated storage facility in Lower Gornal. “I’ve been working in the double glazing sector since leaving school 20 years ago, learning the trade with my Dad before deciding to go on my own in 2015,” explained Ian. “What I was always taught was the importance of attention to detail and making sure you deliver exactly what the customer is looking for and that’s two of the main reasons we have had such a successful year.” www.goldoakwindows.co.uk WINDOW NEWS MAY 2019 27

However, Dad had a plan that would need the both of us and it was nice to think I could be instrumental in building on the work he had already started with Geofast.” Since then, the father and son duo have continued to grow the business into an impressive 28 WINDOW NEWS MAY 2019

multi-national company. Philip puts the success down to the combination of his sales and marketing skills and his Dad’s technical know-how. “We make a great team. We complement each other’s skillset and there is a tremendous trust from working with family. It wouldn’t be half as interesting doing any of this without each other.” To achieve the growth for Georgian Bar, the pair have worked together to create more than 600 product options, in a huge number of colours and styles, to fit with nearly all PVCu windows manufactured in the UK. Anyone who knows Phil Jr will certainly attest to his generous

nature, his enthusiasm of networking with the industry and helping others to form business relationships. “This industry is immensely social. I remember very early on being invited to the Glass Times Race day and the people were so welcoming. Some of the first people I chatted to on that day have turned into friendships that have continued over the last decade. “From then at the plethora of industry events, from PIGs to the Madi Ball Rallies and fantastic fundraising events, I can certainly say I love the people in this industry, and I have learned so much from all of them. There are too many to name names – you know who you all are!” www.geofast.co.uk

Don’t take risks. Take responsibility.

SE Controls actuators are tested to the EN12101-2 smoke ventilation standard, in combination with leading façade systems, to ensure correct functionality in an emergency. The proof of compliance is the issuing of the Declaration of Performance (DoP), which will be required by the contract team, client and authority signing off the building. A rigorous third party audited process that covers fabrication and installation is required, which SE Controls can provide directly, or via our network of audited fabricators and installer partners. Epwin Window Systems’ Star Performer Gets Ready

To Launch At FIT

Epwin Window Systems will be launching its new star performer at 11am on Tuesday 21st May on Stand N5 at the FIT Show. Gerald Allen, Marketing Manager at Epwin Window Systems, said: “If you’re at the FIT Show on the Tuesday, Stand N5 at 11am will be the place to be. And if you won’t be there, you can follow the countdown live on our dedicated website www. itsallsystemsgo.co.uk.”

Gerald said the launch is something only a major industry player with a track record of investment and innovation could be capable of delivering. “It has got everything

He added: “Our launch is going to be one of the biggest the industry has seen for a while and anticipation has been building rapidly. We can’t wait to reveal what we’ve

kept under wraps for so long – I can promise you won’t be disappointed.” The launch is part of a big year for Epwin Window Systems. It is expanding its extrusion capacity by 40% and its foiling capacity by 30% and will be opening a new 300,000 square foot distribution centre in Telford, Shropshire later on this year too. Gerald said: “We’re the UK’s largest and most successful systems house. We’ve been offering customers more for over 40 years thanks to our commitment to continuous investment and innovation.” In the launch advertising, Epwin Window Systems has been inviting fabricators and installers to step away from the ordinary and start their journey to the exceptional. The clock at www.itsallsystemsgo.co.uk is counting down the days, hours, minutes and seconds to the launch.

FIT SHOW PREVIEW “We are absolutely thrilled to finally reveal Ali-deck, and look forward to the official launch at the upcoming FIT Show,” comments Mark Wood, Managing Director of Milwood Group. “Alideck takes us in a bold, new direction and gives tradespeople something that is completely unique, highly-desirable and designed to help them achieve greater margins on their projects.

Outdoor Living

Specialists Milwood Group To Bring Aluminium Decking

To The FIT Show

Milwood Group, the Kent-based outdoor living specialists, have promised a world first at The FIT Show when they officially launch Ali-deck, their brand-new aluminium decking system. On display at Stand K70, Alideck is a quick fit, slip-resistant decking system designed for both domestic and commercial settings. Not only is Ali-deck faster to install than both timber and composite decking, it’s far safer, stronger and can span 300% further than traditional decking, claims the company. This is thanks to the inherent strength of aluminium, along with Ali-deck’s innovative Supa Joist, which has been specifically designed with large spans and ease of installation in mind. As to be expected from an 42 WINDOW NEWS MAY 2019

aluminium system, Ali-deck will not crack or warp but can be recycled and is also coloured to complement its surroundings, or one of Milwood’s aluminium verandas.

“The timing couldn’t be better too, with the consumer-driven demand for outdoor living. Savvy installers now have the opportunity to pair Ali-deck with one of our in-demand aluminium shelters. This combination can then complement a new aluminium bifold or patio door to create a premium outdoor living space. It’s also great timing for commercial fitters with Ali-deck providing a great alternative to the now outlawed composite decking in high-rise balconies and other commercial settings. “The opportunities are truly endless, and we look forward to demonstrating what can be achieved with Ali-deck at The FIT Show. Our team will be onhand to answer any questions and we will even have examples for visitors to come and explore. We are anticipating a busy couple of days when doors open in May.” Ali-deck will be just one of many products on display at the Milwood stand, with the Kent firm showcasing their full range of aluminium verandas, canopies, carports and pergolas. The team will also be using the show to launch Simplicity Xtra, a brandnew roof system which is simple to install without compromising on quality or performance. www.milwoodgroup.com To learn more about Ali-deck, visit www.alideck.co.uk.

A Win-Win For AluK Customers

AluK says its presence at the FIT Show will include an exciting stand packed with innovation, market leading products, great advice, and even the chance for installers to win their first AluK aluminium window and door order worth up to £10,000.

Managing Director Russell Yates says it’s a ‘win-win’ for both existing and potential customers who can talk to the experts at AluK about all the benefits which come from partnering with the industry’s most dynamic and supportive aluminium systems company. The big products being showcased on the stand and due for release later in 2019 are the AluK C70S window system for light commercial applications and the new Luminia S119LM slim sliding door for the premium retail market. The AluK C70S is believed to be 44 WINDOW NEWS MAY 2019

the first aluminium window system in the UK which will come with the option of pre-inserted gaskets, potentially saving time (and money) in fabrication; while the Luminia S119LM will sit neatly between the mid-market Optio BSC94S and the high end Infinium door giving AluK customers a stylish, easy to fit slim slider option for every budget and application.

These will be on show alongside AluK’s existing and still hugely popular 58BW window series, its market leading sliding, bi-fold doors and residential doors and, perfectly timed for summer, its contemporary Luminia Veranda system. There’s a fantastic incentive being offered for installers who sign up in advance to attend the FIT Show. All they need to do is bring along to the stand a completed entry form from the AluK website (www.aluk.co.uk)

and they will automatically be entered into a draw to win their first aluminium window and door order with AluK worth up to £10,000. With 2019 marking AluK’s 25th anniversary in the UK, the company will also be celebrating in style at the show and hosting a party on its stand during late night Tuesday to which all are invited. The AluK team have been busy pulling together a video montage of AluK’s journey from 1994 to 2019 which promises to be quite a trip down memory lane. Russell Yates added: “We’re celebrating where we began, thanking all those customers who have been with us along the way and inviting new customers to join us for the next exciting stage in our journey.” More details are at: www.aluk.co.uk

Innovation And High Quality On Panoramic’s FIT Show Stand With the Panoramic ‘swing and slide’ door as its flagship product, this highly innovative, design-led company will offer further evidence of its unique approach to product development with a number of new product launches at the FIT Show in May. These will include additions in the most popular window styles and a new PVC-U version of its swing and slide door that is aimed at broadening the market. With more than 10,000 Panoramic doors installed in the UK and 260,000 worldwide, the company has now produced a UPVC version of the door, to be offered exclusively through professional installers who have undergone Panoramic certification. Offering an alternative to the ubiquitous bi-fold, the Panoramic swing and slide is selling in ever-increasing numbers to homeowners that appreciate the wide, uninterrupted openings of conventional bi-folds, but with the added versatility and com50 WINDOW NEWS MAY 2019

In line with the surge in flush sash windows presently, Panoramic has developed its own unique version. Featuring seamless welds that complement the minimal, equal sightlines, a key feature of this window is the hidden handle that pops out of a recess at a touch, and which also contributes to the smooth, uninterrupted surfaces that characterise this window. A catalogue of 250 colours also allows homeowners to closely integrate their windows with interior designs. With Panoramic chairman Alan Rees credited with bringing affordable replacement VS box sash windows to UK homeowners 15 years ago, it should not be surpris-

Produced from unique PVC-U profiles, the Panoramic VS offers an authentic appearance that will be sympathetic to the host property, although its careful design subtly allows larger glass areas and therefore significantly improved light transmission. In keeping with current home styling trends, the door is available in 250 colours to allow detailed customisation with exterior and interior décor schemes. A further reveal will be in-glass blinds from new division Panoglass. These have been designed to float within the glass unit to allow the user to position the blind without restriction, providing shade and light according to the user’s needs. Panoglass In-Unit Blinds will also be competitively priced to make such products significantly more affordable to a wider customer base. Alongside these innovative launches will be a number of established products, including the Ascena Screen. These patio and bi-folding door screens are designed to provide an excellent solution to prevent flies and wasps entering the home whilst still allowing cooling breezes through open doors. They are believed to be the only of their type available to the UK window and door trade. Alan Rees says: “The key principles behind every product we launch at Panoramic are innovation and high quality. I do not believe in simply replicating products that are already available. Every window and door that we design and manufacture will include useful and advanced features that are exciting and different from anything else that retail customers will have seen on their journey to improve their homes. “ www.panoramicgroup.co.uk

To Host Launch Lunch At FIT Show

Andy Ball, Managing Director of Balls2 Marketing. “The Joinery Network was set up to meet joinery manufacturers’ demand for genuine Document Q PAS 24 & BS6375 timber windows and doors and the partners have invested in testing. “So far, through Owen Dare of OT Dare Consultants, we have tested for BS 6375: 1 for weathertightness and thermal performance, PAS 24 and Approved Document Q for security, and Part M. Our aim is to allow joiners to achieve genuine certification without any risk.”

The Joinery Network is inviting timber window and door companies to the launch on the Wednesday to find out more on how to manufacture superior, genuine PAS 24 compliant timber products.

The vast majority of Emmegi (UK) customers have at least one piece of the Emmegi handling equipment in their factories with many standardising on the company’s products and ordering in bulk. Base System At FIT 2019

LEKA Systems will be unveiling its latest innovation at this year’s FIT Show. Rhys Hoddinott, Managing Director of LEKA Systems, said: “The LEKA Xi Conservatory Base System is a new modular extension that raises the bar in thermally efficient home extensions or garden rooms. And due to its intelligent design, they can be constructed in just three to five days.” It’s a modular system that’s tailored to homeowner and installer requirements and is constructed using a LEKA base, LEKA walls and the LEKA roof system. There are three or four sided options, so it can be used for both home extensions and standalone garden rooms. There is a choice of finishes and options for dwarf walls, full walls or defined heights. There are internal partition options if a subdivided space is needed. Both the thermal efficiency and lifespan are exceptional thanks to the GRP construction of the base, walls and roof. It means it creates a flexible, multi-purpose

space that gives homeowners valuable extra living space.

The modular nature of the system means it is ideal for sites with access restrictions because it arrives flatpacked. It is also exceptionally fast to install. There is minimal groundwork required and installation typically takes three to five days, including fitting of the LEKA base, LEKA walls and LEKA roof system. Rhys says: “The LEKA Systems Installer Network is increasing on a daily basis and we’re looking for fabricators to fulfil their requirements. LEKA Systems typically increase a fabricator’s revenue stream by 10-15% in the first year, so it’s an opportunity not to be missed. See us at the FIT Show – or if you can’t wait till then, contact us today.” To be one of the first to see the LEKA Xi and find out what it could add to your business, visit stand N10. www.lekasystems.co.uk

Distinction To Launch

10IN10 On Stand P20

“Distinction has therefore made it essential that it’s on-stand message is especially clear, concise and to be delivered by approachable, knowledgeable and well-trained staff. This will be our opportunity to demonstrate our proven track record of supporting customers through every part of the chain and show how we can do the same for others – from a trouble-free transition to reliable stockholding, flexible prepping services to sales and marketing support.”

Being Ready

Selling readiness will be the answer when selling smart windows and doors. This will be the key message being pushed by Smart Ready® in its talk entitled ‘Being Ready’, which will take place in the FIT Show’s Discovery Theatre at 2.30pm on Wednesday. Gemma Zeiderman, Consumer Appeal Director at Smart Ready® and main speaker at the seminar explains: “There’s no doubt the world is getting smarter, but a different approach is needed to sell smart. Some consumers will make their windows or doors smart today. I am sure others would like an option to switch at some point in the future. So, not being ready for both consumers doesn’t make good sense. The TV industry saw this.

“The ‘being ready’ marketing phenomenon is firmly stuck in the minds of millions of consumers. HD Ready for TV started it some years back. Just as TVs are all now sold HD Ready, doors and windows will all soon be sold as standard Smart Ready®. If you’re not selling Smart Ready® my prediction is you won’t be selling at all. Being ready will be important to you. It’s a seminar not to be missed. “Of course, if visitors need any more information, or can’t make the seminar, they can find out more about Smart Ready® and see live demonstrations of Smart Ready® systems on stand M20.” smartready.com 56 WINDOW NEWS MAY 2019

QUOTES.. Made easy

The Charles Godfrey Memorial Award for Innovation is given every year to a product that has brought significant innovation to the building industry. The Korniche Aluminium Roof Lantern has been awarded this prestigious award for 2018. Made for Trade are putting in every effort to help installers, builders and trade counters to respond to growing demand for both The Korniche Roof Lantern and the Visofold 1000 Bifolding doors. KwikQuote enables our customers to react to sales enquiries quickly by providing instant pricing for their clients. The ability to provide a customer a quotation in real time has proved to be a huge success. When partnered with Made for Trade’s rapid fabrication times (5 working days for Korniche lanterns and around 10 for Bi-Folds), our clients are handed a clear advantage in the market place.

Marketing & Point of Sale The Korniche product offering for our partners is well supported with Consumer and Technical Brochures, sales material and point of sale. In additional showroom lanterns can be provided in kit form and developed to make the greatest impact from the smallest footprint. The Korniche sales team also takes the brand out to the consumer through the Homebuilding & Renovating Shows building awareness and demand for the product for our partners. Roger Bisby who tested the Korniche earlier in the year commented: “The first thing I saw was the packaging. Every builder knows the frustration of having items arrive on site with damage. It slows the job down and causes hassle for the manufacturer - and the customer. Often there is a knock-on effect because other trades are unable to get on. With the Korniche Roof Lantern, everything arrived in perfect condition. The next thing is the instruction booklet, which deserves as award on its own. A huge amount of thought and design has gone into this. Every stage is clearly shown with intelligent use of colours to show you the relevant components. Then there is the engineering. It all fits perfectly, and, when I say fits, I mean no gaps or misalignment, and no need for packers, shims or sealant. The whole installation process went like a dream and I said at the time that I couldn’t wait until I had the chance to fit another. It didn’t take long. Without the slightest rush I fitted three on a roof in less than a morning and each one was perfect. More importantly, the customer was delighted”. Made For Trade are delighted to have received this award, one that stands by the very values on which the Korniche was conceived - to deliver to builders and installers a product that makes life on site easier and more cost effective, whilst providing a beautiful, architectural lantern look that is contemporary whilst holding on to traditional timber style fitting any home. FITTED IN MINUTES, GLAZED IN SECONDS, STRONGER than any other lantern on the market with WARMER construction and SLIMMER profiles.

Inventor Keith Rimmer with his new innovation Thermocill

Energy-saving Thermocill ‘warms up a room faster’

An eco-friendly product that can warm up a room quicker than normal has been unveiled – and it’s made entirely from recycled plastic waste including plastic bottle tops! Award-winning inventor Keith Rimmer is launching Thermocill – a simple, easy to install, cost-saving way of redirecting heat in a room – at the FIT Show at the NEC in Birmingham from May 21-23 Stand R30. Thermocill is a device that is placed under the window board and above the radiator in a room. Thermocill directs natural convection from the radiator to help create a wall of warm 62 WINDOW NEWS MAY 2019

air immediately in front of the internal side of the glazed window preventing heat loss and cold air entering the room.

is aimed at the housing market and can be fitted retrospectively in any existing home or to new builds.

Keith has teamed up with Brian Lavery, of Camden Group – one of the largest independent manufacturer and supplier of uPVC windows and doors to trade customers in the UK and Ireland.

Mechanical engineer Keith, who won an Ernst & Young North West Entrepreneur of the Year Award for EcoPod, said: “Thermocill is manufactured from plastic waste including plastic bottle tops and when operating doesn’t use any form of energy itself. It is a truly sustainable environmental product with carbon savings all the way.

Brian, whose products are made of 80% recycled materials, will have the sole rights to manufacture Thermocill in the UK and will offer licence agreements to chosen suppliers. Thermocill, patent pending (No 1820279.6) and trademarked,

“It can help you warm up a room quicker than normal providing thermal comfort which means you use less energy. The reason for this is that the

FIT SHOW NEWS PREVIEW

re-directed heat targets the cold spot in the room being the double glazed unit, of either your present window or of any new window that may be installed.” The figures are based on Keith’s own product tests including thermal imaging reports. But Thermocill is currently being examined by experts at Salford University and the Carbon Trust who he believes will confirm his findings, Thermocill even alleviates condensation from the internal glazed unit which is a problem of many newly efficient window systems. Thermocill extends from 125mm to 250mm fitting the most common size window boards and comes in three width sizes 500mm, 300mm and 100mm, all of which can be used as a multiple to fit the majority of window sizes. The rear ventilation outlet of Thermocill is also adjustable to allow different thicknesses of decorative window board finishes – timber, MDF, plastic or conglomerate and tiled finishes from 10mm to 26mm.

When Thermocill is fitted apart from the outlet grill at the back of the window board no part will be on show. The eureka moment when Keith landed on the idea of creating and developing Thermocill happened when he called at a friend’s home for a cup of tea. The inventor revealed: “I was sitting in the lounge. It was a cold night and I was looking towards the window and noticed the vertical blinds moving. My friend said ‘What’s up Keith?’ and I just said ‘I’ve got an idea!’ Keith said: “I could see the convection of warm air from the radiator was trying to get to the window but it couldn’t get there. I went to my car and got my digital thermometer and took some readings around the window area and within 10 minutes I had the idea for Thermocill in my head.” He added: “I came into the window industry by accident which was quite costly but eye opening, but also to solve a problem that it had faced for years – heat loss from glazed units.

“When designing a heating system, the major factor was always the size of the window. Specifiers, rightly so, wanted rooms with large windows to allow as much natural light as possible. “But this comes at a cost. More heat is required in the space so larger heating appliances and emitters are needed to accommodate this plus good insulation in wall cavities, floor slabs etc. But the cold spot in the room is still there. That’s where Thermocill addresses the issue by creating a wall of warm air.” Roy Harrison, Camden’s sales manager, said: “We are really excited at the potential of Thermocill which we are convinced could help revolutionise the home heating industry.” And Keith believes Thermocill will be as ground-breaking as the EcoPod heating system he invented almost 10 years ago. The system achieved huge energy savings and cut carbon production.

Contemporary door manufacturers that opt to cut corners on hardware, which often isn’t even suited across their door, are often storing up future problems for themselves from both a performance and customer satisfaction perspective.

“Manufacturers rightly put a lot of time and effort into creating contemporary entrance doors, but all of the good work can be completely compromised by fitting lesser quality hardware from varied manufacturers. Resist The Effects Of Salt Spray Corrosion With Upgraded HOPPE Handles Residents and homeowners in coastal areas of the UK can now install HOPPE door handles that are guaranteed to last at least 10 years.

It is estimated that three million people in the UK live on the coast. Homes in these areas are affected by marine corrosion, also known as sea or salt spray corrosion, which can lead to significant property damage, particularly to any exposed metal elements. However, nowhere in the UK is more than 70 miles from the coast, so even homes that are not directly on the seafront can also be affected by marine corrosion. Low quality door hardware will fail very quickly in these types of areas. Residents will notice hardware becoming tarnished or 66 WINDOW NEWS MAY 2019

discoloured and the appearance of spots. Corrosion doesn’t just affect the handle’s appearance. Once corrosion sets in, it can damage the internal workings of the handle meaning the only option is to replace it which, depending on the type of door, could be costly. HOPPE’s Atlanta handle range with the Resista® finish has been designed to ensure it can withstand the effects of weathering. Made from one of the only metals with a strong resistance to corrosion, the new solid brass based handles are suitable for all residential properties, even those in coastal areas. Lisa Nightingale, door and window sales manager at HOPPE (UK), said: “The latest product offering from Resista® promises the same

high quality and levels of durability regardless of the property’s location. With the new heavier, sturdier design you can truly feel the quality of the handle with every use. “But, just because it is high quality doesn’t mean it is high maintenance. There’s no need for special cleaning measures, any dirt can be easily removed with just a damp cloth. It really is a fit and forget product, perfect for homeowners who have plenty of other things to worry about.” As part of HOPPE’s commitment to high quality products, Resista® handles have a 10 year surface guarantee. This is in addition to the 10 year mechanical operation guarantee that applies to all HOPPE door and window handles. Available in two finishes, polished brass or polished chrome, the Atlanta handle range with the Resista® finish conforms to EN 1670 which covers the corrosion resistance of locks and hardware. www.hoppe.co.uk

Standing Out

In A Crowded Conservatory Market

ustin Williams, International Sales and Marketing Director at trade fabricator Modplan, is on an awareness-raising mission when it comes to conservatory roofs. He says: “The LEKA Warm Roof and the LEKA Orangery Roof are the standout exceptions in a market where consumers think all warm room replacement systems are the same. “Most homeowners didn’t actually install their conservatory. It came with a house they bought. They aren’t precious about it and at some point, they’ll want to change the way it looks or tackle the fact it isn’t a year-round room.” Justin gives the example of a 70 WINDOW NEWS MAY 2019

typical Victorian conservatory. “Many of today’s homeowners view a traditional Victorian conservatory as old-fashioned. With a new LEKA Orangery Roof it’s simple to transform it into a light-filled, warm and contemporary room. There’s no need to replace dwarf walls or the existing footprint. Instead, for example, they can build a large floating flat roof with a 500mm overhang over the frame underneath it and add a lantern roof light with large glass frames 3m from the ground.” He adds: “I know all this to be true because it’s the exact problem I had in my own home. My contractor wanted to build a single storey extension

to meet my brief! The LEKA Orangery Roof allowed me to design what I wanted not what the contractor wanted to sell me. At Modplan we can see from the surge in demand that LEKA roof products are a perfect contemporary solution for many of the UK’s three million conservatory owners who want to upgrade to a warm roof”. The roofs said to be are up to 40% lighter than other replacement roof solutions so in most retro-fit projects, the existing conservatory frames are able to take the weight of the new LEKA roofing system without needing additional reinforcement. Justin concludes, “It frees up installers to design incredible solutions for consumers because their imagination is the limit, not the product. And the fact the system is wonderfully simple to install is just another bonus.” www.modplan.co.uk

Enhanced Aesthetics, Reduced Lead-Times,

And Lower Prices – That’s Smooth Conservatory and extension specialist, Ultraframe, has announced that its Ultrasky PVCU Lantern is now available in the contemporary smooth anthracite grey foil on a reduced lead time of just 5 days, and at a far more competitive price. Explaining more about this latest product investment, Ultraframe Marketing Director, Alex Hewitt, said: “We continuously invest in our product range and the expansion of our colour offering on the Ultrasky Lantern to include smooth grey is the latest demonstration of this. Where previously a grey Ultrasky Lantern would have been sprayed or featured aluminium cappings, both our fabricators and kit customers can now get a smooth grey foiled lantern on a 5-day lead time! Not only that, but

we’ve been able to make cost savings, even though this is an enhancement to the system and so naturally, we have passed these on to our customers.” The Ultrasky Lantern is claimed to feature fewer bars than other roof lanterns, maximum light into the room below. The lantern is ideal for creating a focal point in a dining room, kitchen or living area and is widely used in contempo-

rary extensions and orangeries with a flat roof. Packed with thermal breaks, the Ultrasky Lantern is thermally broken both inside and out, making it the ideal choice for kitchen extensions where temperature fluctuations and rising steam could otherwise cause issues, says Ultraframe. The Ultrasky Lantern can span up to 4m x 5.85m. Available in PVCU or aluminium internally or externally with a choice of performance glazing options, the Ultrasky Lantern is available in any RAL colour and can be installed in minutes, with no drilling or cutting and no fiddly trims, claims the company. New Vaulted Glass Roof Brings Sun-Lit, Year-Round Shopping To A Devon Town “Weather has had a greater effect on sales than economic numbers, we’ve known that forever”. So said former John Lewis managing director Andy Street, alluding to a longstanding challenge for British retailers – how to keep shoppers coming out on cold, wet and windy days. At one traditional shopping centre at the heart of a Devon town, the solution is architectural – enclosing the previously open-air pedestrianised street with a large glass roof in order to create a space that can 72 WINDOW NEWS MAY 2019

be enjoyed all-year-round. Originally built in the 1970s, the Market Walk shopping centre in Newton Abbot, South Devon, was bought by Teignbridge District Council in 2016. The £13 million acquisition of Newton Abbot’s Market Walk shopping centre was the largest investment in Teignbridge‘s history and gave Teignbridge a greater ability to positively influence the future development of Newton Abbot’s central shopping district as well

as regular and reliable source of income. Teignbridge later invested £2 million in upgrading the centre and modernising the appearance of the busy retail centre. Devised by architects LHC group, the project involved a comprehensive upgrade of shopfronts and paving, including re-cladding units and installing new furniture to create a more modern, welcoming street-scene. But, the defining feature is the barrel-vaulted roof,

ON SITE which will flood the space with light while protecting it from the elements. A key part of delivering the architect’s vision for the scheme was constructing a roof that obstructed the view of the sky as little as possible. This was achieved using a discreet steel structure of tension-chord-supported arched beams, holding Pilkington Planar™ structural glass units which are attached to the spans with the system’s stainless steel 905J fixings. The 4-point stainless steel Nexus castings allow the units to be anchored to the steel beams at the corner intersections by single bolts, minimising the hardware required and delivering a more unobstructed outlook. The glass itself also contributes to the clarity, with Pilkington Optiwhite™ true low-iron glass being used to deliver a sky view with the most natural colours possible. A total of 475 sq m of laminated glass was used in the project, featuring 10mm and 6mm glass sandwiching a Trosifol® SentryGlas® interlayer. The canopy is almost the size of two tennis courts, and from the perspective of a visitor at street level, the span of the roof recedes behind the roofs of the shops, helping to maintain the original outdoor appearance. Tony Watson, interim head of commercial services, at Teignbridge District Council said: “We all know that, across the country, the high street is changing rapidly, and we’re confident that the investment we have made here brings Market Walk Shopping Centre up to the standards consumers expect from a modern shopping destination. “The weather of course plays a major role in many people’s shopping habits, so we believe the pleasant covered space this project has created will be attractive to

people all year round, to the benefit of local residents and business alike.” Paul Williams, managing director at Vitrine Systems said: “Visiting the precinct still feels just like walking under an open sky, but with the benefit of being protected from the weather – so it’s a pleasant experience all year round. “The new roof has also allowed the concrete rain shelters that previously sheltered the shopfronts to be removed, creating a greater sense of space and making the main boulevard feel much wider and more open.”

Jason Eggerton, UK Specifications Sales Manager at Pilkington United Kingdom Limited, said: “This project is a great example of how the Pilkington Planar™ system can bring a contemporary architectural appearance to an existing building without altering its original character. “The minimal framing means the glass itself becomes the most notable feature of the installation, rather than the hardware supporting it, allowing architects to use glass to enhance the functionality of spaces without impacting excessively on their aesthetics.” www.pilkington.com/en-GB/uk WINDOW NEWS MAY 2019 73

Accommodation Benefits From

Optima Windows Profile 22’s Flush Tilt & Turn Windows were chosen for a £24 million project to build new accommodation for 735 students at Sheffield Hallam University. The project was undertaken by Profile 22’s Approved Window Contractor Polar Windows.

The client was Victoria Hall Management Ltd (VHML), a specialist UK developer and operational manager of student accommodation. The contract was to build The Elements, an 11-storey building containing a mix of 4, 5 and 6 bed cluster flats plus self-contained flats, with all bedrooms having an en suite bathroom and sharing a kitchen and dining area. As well as the flats, the building contains a gym, cinema room, quiet study area, common room TV and pool table and a private 74 WINDOW NEWS MAY 2019

While aluminium windows were specified for the building’s street facing elevations in order to meet planning requirements, Profile 22’s high performance Flush Tilt & Turn Windows in Smooth Anthracite Grey were specified for the internal courtyard. Purposely designed for medium and high rise buildings, the sash on the Flush Tilt & Turn Window is neatly positioned inside the frame of the window to create an elegant and sleek ‘flush’ appearance. Polar Windows’ use of the Flush Tilt & Turn Windows on the internal courtyard elevations meant that North Midland Construction was able to value engineer the project and deliver value back to the

client, Host. As well as helping North Midland Construction value engineer the project, Profile 22’s Flush Tilt & Turn Window delivered a wealth of other benefits. It has a maximum opening size of 1450 x 2300mm and offers exceptional performance because it has an air permeability value of 600Pa, water tightness value of 600Pa and wind resistance value of 2400Pa. It is also Secured by Design accredited and meets PAS24:2016 standards for security. Throughout the project Polar Windows worked closely with Profile 22’s commercial support team to provide CAD drawings and additional technical support. The end result is an eye-catching building that has regenerated a neglected site in Sheffield and is a powerful addition to the Sheffield city landscape. An unloved and uninspiring 1970s office block in Bristol’s Redcliffe harbourside conservation area has been transformed into a stylish contemporary apartment development featuring AluK’s versatile 58BW and 58BD window and door systems. The project at Redcliffe Place in Bristol is part of an award winning* scheme by Change Real Estate, which has also included the refurbishment of six adjoining Georgian townhouses previously used as offices into luxury period apartments. Alec French were the architects for the 1970s conversion and used contemporary cladding framing AluK floor to ceiling windows to create a striking visual contrast with the Georgian terrace alongside. AluK’s slimline 58 window and door systems were chosen for

the project because they have a proven track record in this type of residential development and could easily meet the demanding performance specification laid down. The windows are full height in all of the 14 apartments to make the most of the natural light coming into the open plan living spaces and to provide the best possible views across the city. They are triple glazed throughout, achieving a U-Value of 1.2 W/m2K and have PAS24/Secured by Design accreditation. The 58BD glazed balcony doors achieve a U-Value of 1.4 W/m2K and, like the windows, maximise the natural light. They also all comply with the Lifetime Homes specification laid down by the developers which ensures that the apartments remain accessible and adaptable for residents in the future, with features

such as low thresholds on the doors and handles on the 58BW windows at a usable height. AluK’s 58 window and door systems offer the ultimate in versatility. Stedek’s R² Artistry Excels On Vintage-Look New-Build

Stedek’s Residence Collection expertise has helped bring an ambitious vintage-look newbuild to life.

“It was a lovely idea. But we suggested Residence as an equally stunning but virtually maintenance-free alternative.

Prestige builders RS Burgess & Sons have collaborated with the Midlands fabricator on a number of high-end projects in recent years.

“David was immediately impressed with the Residence Collection’s silvered oak finish, and before long, it was decided: a selection of outstanding Residence products would be used instead.”

So, when it came to the glazing for an extra-special development, it was Stedek they turned to for advice. The project in question aimed to transform a piece of rural Shropshire into a family home that looked like it had been there for decades. The difference? That home was intended for David Burgess, owner of RS Burgess & Sons himself. “Originally, the plan was to install windows made of oak, which would then be left to naturally silver as they aged, matching the building’s exposed oak frontage,” comments Stedek Sales Director Richard Hammond.

Stedek offered up all three Residence Collection models for David’s consideration – R9, R7 and R². In the end, though, he opted for the striking Residence², the most contemporary of the three, but arguably also the most versatile – able to look perfectly in-keeping with the property’s traditional exterior, while contributing to the sleeker, more modern aesthetic inside. Elsewhere on the property, the windows were complemented with two elegant R² French doors with R² sidelights, and an Origin aluminium bifold with stainless-steel handles and

hinges. “Fitting the front door is always a hugely symbolic moment in any build,” Richard continues, “and David had chosen a Solidor composite door – a great product. “None of the standard colours were inspiring him, though. He wanted something a bit special. And so, we painted it a rustic, homely cream colour for them, perfectly in keeping with the property as a whole.” David Burgess commented: “Stedek are one of the most quality-focused firms we’ve ever come across. “When we’ve worked with them previously, the windows they’ve sent us have been consistently outstanding – and so, when it came to my own new-build, Stedek were the obvious choice. “The end result was so exceptional that DW3 used the house in the award entry that saw R² shortlisted for a Build It Award.” www.stedek.co.uk WINDOW NEWS MAY 2019 77

Any fabricator manufacturing windows for public buildings including health care facilities and private multiple occupancy buildings, such as student accommodation, can get extra technical and test information with Cubelock window restrictors from Newstar Door Controls. “We know that fabricators often need extra test data and information when manufacturing windows for commercial buildings,” says Toby Staff, Managing Director at Newstar Door Controls. “This is particularly crucial for health care facilities. Additional guidance was issued five years ago within The Department of Health, Estate and Facilities Alert EFA/2013/002. “BS EN 13126-5:2011, the test for window restrictors, was singled out as inadequate by the DoH for two reasons. Firstly, testing to 500N is inadequate in preventing a determined effort to force a window open beyond the 100mm restriction. And secondly, that locked restrictors can be forced open with commonly available flat bladed instruments as well as the ‘key’ provided. Cubelock has independent testing that exceeds the requirement of this standard” To get your FREE window restrictor guide and literature email sales@cubelockrestrictor.com WINDOW NEWS MAY 2019 81

we’re setting up The Watt Bike Challenge to see how you fare against the clock on this notoriously tough static bike – come along and have a go! “Although cycling is prominent in our minds, there’s a lot more to talk about as well: being part of the GMF family doesn’t necessarily require you to take on one of these ridiculous challenges. We’ve got lots of events going on in 2020 that caters for everyone – there will be another gruelling ‘girls-only’ challenge and we’ll also be hosting the GMF Cup, the golf day and the next gala dinner. “We will also be supported by the team from Hope House, who will be taking the opportunity to meet and greet old friends and new, raise awareness of the services they provide to children with life-limiting illnesses and their families, and tell you exactly how the money

we raise is spent.” Alison Marsh, Head of Fundraising at Hope House comments: “We are really excited to be able to support GM Fundraising at the FIT Show 2019. As one of our biggest contributors, we see the effect of the amazing support the fenestration industry gives to the charity through GM Fundraising every day. Being part of the exhibition give us a chance to personally say thank you, so please come and see us!” Gary concludes: “Be part of the GMF family – visit us on stand D6, take part in The Watt Bike Challenge, sign up for one of our 2020 events, meet the team from Hope House or just say hello!” For more information visit: www.gmfundraising.co.uk
