Reinforcements Risk Safety And
Standards, Says REHAU Image Above: Mark Gajda, Certification and Quality Manager at REHAU. REHAU has warned fabricators and installers they risk fitting substandard windows and doors and incurring hefty fines every time they use non-approved steel reinforcements for PVC-U installations. Mark Gajda, Certification and Quality Manager at REHAU, said: “It’s important that fabricators and installers understand the consequences of purchasing reinforcements from non-system approved suppliers and recognise the risks to their customers and their business. “Every time an installation is fitted using alternative components not approved by the supplier, the fabricator is essentially changing the physical make up of an approved 4 WINDOW NEWS OCTOBER 2018
design and therefore it will not perform as expected. This practice has repercussions for safety, quality and the reputation of the windows industry as a whole.” It is not against the law for fabricators or installers to purchase and use steel or aluminium reinforcements from a third party – rather than a system – supplier, yet it can have very serious financial and legal consequences. Firstly, the product may not perform as it should in situ. For example, the structural or wind loading calculations will no longer be valid if the reinforcements are different from those specified by the system manufacturer, and any BIM modelling data supplied by them will also be incorrect. The WER rating and U-value calculations will also be invalid and thermal performance
Secondly, the use of third party reinforcements invalidates any industry standards previously accredited to the system. Standards – such as PAS24 and BS 6375 – are awarded on the basis that the same components and hardware are used by the fabricators and installers of the product, and they are therefore of equal standard to the windows or doors that were assessed under test conditions. Failure to meet PAS24 standards also means that installers or fabricators need to find another way of meeting the Approved Document Q of the Building Regulations for England. Third party certifications, such as BSI Kitemark, CE Marking DoP are also invalidated by the use of non-approved components. To retain these certifications, fabricators need to retest the altered products – at their own expense – to prove their product still complies with the standards. The cost of certification testing can run into tens of thousands of pounds. Fabricators and installers using alternative steel or aluminium reinforcements also forfeit the manufacturer’s warranty for the products, should the third-party components cause issues further down the line. This means that any repairs or replacement required will also need to be done at the expense of the fabricator and installer. Mark concludes: “Maintaining the synergy between tested products and installed products is the only way that we can assure customers that the products being fitted do what they say they will in terms of performance and standards. Any changes or third-party components introduce unnecessary risks and can damage the reputation of the supplier, the fabricator and the installer so we would urge people to think ‘real deal’ when it comes to steel.”

Demand To Rise
With Launch Of New £1bn SME
Housing Development Fund
Distinction
Doors
Heading For 50 Percent Growth In
Glass Demand Barclays, in partnership with Housing England and the Ministry of Housing, have announced they will be providing £1bn of funding to help stimulate the building of new homes across England. The funding, which will come in the form of ‘competitively-priced’ loans between £5m and £100m, is specifically earmarked to support SME housebuilders and developers. As long as they can demonstrate ‘the necessary experience and track record’ to complete projects, they can draw from the fund to build homes for rent or sale as well as social housing, retirement accommodation and properties for the private rented sector. It forms part of the Government’s ‘Housing Delivery Fund’, set up to better support SMEs and ultimately deliver greater diversity to the UK housing market. The new fund is the next stage in the Government’s pledge to build on average 300,000 new homes every year by the mid2020s. “With the Ministry of Housing reporting that two-thirds of all new homes are built by the 10 major
housebuilders, the news of extra financial support will undoubtedly be welcomed by smaller developers and housebuilders,” comments Jade Greenhow, Operations Director at Insight Data. “This funding, along with the Land Release Fund – which provides local councils with funding to re-purpose dormant, council-owned land for housing, creates real scope for SME developers to dent the market share of the big, national housebuilders. “This is of course really exciting news for the building products and fenestration industries too with the fresh demand this funding will create. If they haven’t already, now is the time for installers, fabricators and product manufacturers to invest in their marketing to ensure they are the first to be called when this funding is distributed, and projects begin. We work with businesses across the industry providing marketing services and real-time data, so they can effectively communicate with and promote their business to housebuilders, main contractors and even architects nationwide.” www.insightdata.co.uk
Distinction Doors is getting ready to celebrate a 50% upturn in sales of its glass ranges – driven by demand for its unique in-house glass designs and a powerful new support package of bespoke consumer literature. That demand has already passed 45% this year against the same period in 2017 and is still climbing towards the 50% milestone any day now, according to Distinction Doors National Sales Manager Andrew Grogan. “We saw sales beginning to climb as soon as we unveiled our own glass design creations two years ago,” he said, “But then they really went up a gear when we launched our consumer brochure options and there is no sign of slowing down in the near future. “The standard glass ranges bought-in by most door companies were growing stale because everyone was offering the sameold, same-old and we could see consumers wanted something more. That’s why we took a completely fresh approach and brought the whole process in house to create a range of styles that were unique to Distinction Doors”. www.distinctiondoors.co.uk WINDOW NEWS OCTOBER 2018 5

Good To See Government Get Serious Switched-On CMS Window

Systems Invests In 100% electric vans
CMS Window Systems has taken another major step in reducing its carbon footprint with the addition of its first 100% electric powered vans to its fleet, along with the installation of new charging points. This latest green initiative by the company, which is one of the UK’s leading window, door and curtain walling fabricators and installers, will further reduce its environmental impact as part of a broad strategy designed to continuously improve operational efficiency with reduced CO2 emissions and waste. The success of this approach was demonstrated recently by figures showing that CMS Window Systems diverted 100% of its waste away from landfill in the 2017-18 financial year, and now the reduction of vehicle emissions is in the spotlight. The company, which won a Queen’s Award for Enterprise in 2017 for its environmental achievements, has installed the infrastructure for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles at both its sites at Cumbernauld near Glasgow and in Kirkcaldy, Fife. The charging points will ensure that the new 100% electric vans can be kept charged and operational, as well as offering staff and visitors who drive plugin electric vehicles access to fast recharging when they are on-site at CMS. www.cmswindows.com 6 WINDOW NEWS OCTOBER 2018
(01 October 2018). Reacting to Business Secretary Greg Clark’s announcement of a package of measures to safeguard small firms from late payments Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) National Chairman Mike Cherry said: “Late payment is the biggest challenge affecting small businesses and it is good to see the Government getting serious about this issue. “The voluntary Prompt Payment Code is not working when it allows signatories like Carillion to pay on terms of over 120 days, so we want to see a new tough and transparent compliance regime being proposed. Involving the Small Business Commissioner Paul Uppal with the Code is also right as that shows a more joined-up approach to this difficult issue. “Further, it is a positive step that central government will set an example – paying 90% of undisputed invoices from small and medium-sized businesses within five days.” The Government also announced
“It’s particularly positive to see the Government has listened to our proposal to make company boards appoint Non-Executive Directors with responsibility for supply chain practice. This is the only way to transform boardroom culture in the UK, where it has become acceptable to pay small firms late if it helps cashflow, as we saw in the case of Carillion prior to its collapse. The move to appoint a dedicated NED responsible for the supply chain within each government department is a really positive example to set, and one which large companies must now follow. “It was good to see the Chancellor confirm at conference that the Government backs business as the cornerstone of a successful economy. “Philip Hammond made important announcements, with a £125 million investment in leadership and management skills for SMEs, helping to support entrepreneurs for the future. He also announced that, from April 2019, large businesses can transfer a quarter of their apprenticeship levy funds to their supply chain, which has been a key ask of FSB to stop the decline in the number of people taking up apprenticeships.” www.fsb.org.uk

BWF And BRE
Collaborate
To Raise Standards

working to help raise standards to ensure the safety of building occupants and firefighters.” Debbie Smith, Managing Director at the BRE Global, said: “Fire safety within the design of a building is of critical importance and fire doors are an integral part of that. We at BRE are passionate about driving forward building safety and we are continually working with our stakeholders from across the built environment, such as the BWF and the Fire Door Alliance, to help improve technical knowledge and understanding to help deliver safer buildings for all. “We fully support Fire Door Safety Week and encourage industry to get involved in helping to raise awareness of the critical role of fire doors and the need for improved industry standards and practice. The need for good installation and ongoing inspection and maintenance of fire doors is not well understood outside of the industry and this must change.”
The British Woodworking Federation (BWF) and BRE (the Building Research Establishment) have joined forces in a bid to raise awareness of the importance of fire doors and to help advance standards in their design, manufacture and installation. Fire doors are the first line of defence against devastating fires and when properly built, installed and maintained, they save lives and protect property. Despite this, fire doors across the UK are still badly fitted, non-compliant, left propped open or damaged and, as a result, could be putting millions of lives at stake. Fire Door Safety Week (FDSW) kicked off yesterday to continue to educate about the critical role that fire doors play in delaying the spread of smoke and fire, and keeping occupants and firefighters safe. 8 WINDOW NEWS OCTOBER 2018
BRE, which has over 95 years’ experience at the leading edge of building research and development, is supporting the campaign and the BWF to develop a series of emotive and educational fire door safety films. The films highlight the potentially devastating effects of fire and smoke and the need to ensure that best practice and standards are followed throughout the industry. Hannah Mansell, spokesperson for FDSW, as well as British Woodworking Federation (BWF) Head of Technical Research and Insight, chair of the Passive Fire Protection Forum and a trustee of the Children’s Burns Trust, says: “We’d like to thank BRE for its ongoing support, in allowing us to use its facilities for our filming. We are delighted to be working in collaboration with a cross-section of the industry, to raise awareness of these life-saving messages around fire door safety as well as
Leveraging greater unity to support fire safety is paramount. The newly formed Fire Door Alliance sees companies certifying product under the BWF Certifire process continuing unabated, while those currently using the Q-Mark scheme are now able to join the alliance and work with the wider sector to effect much needed change. FDSW, a national campaign, is run by the British Woodworking Federation, the BWF-Certifire Scheme and the Fire Door Inspection Scheme, in partnership with the Home Office’s National Fire Safety campaign. Throughout the week, there will be numerous events and campaign activity to raise awareness about the importance of fire door safety. Small Businesses Entirely
Unprepared For Chaotic
No Deal Brexit Only one in seven (14%) small businesses have started planning for a no deal Brexit, according to new research from the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB).
FSB’s latest research shows that a further 41% believe that a no deal Brexit will have an impact on their business but haven’t yet started planning for the possibility. One in ten (10%) believe that a no deal Brexit will have a positive impact on their ability to do business. It reveals that almost half of small businesses (48%) believe that a no deal Brexit will have a negative effect on their ability to do business. This figure rises sharply to 66 per cent for those small firms that trade with the EU and to 61 per cent for those that employ a staff member from the EU. 10 WINDOW NEWS OCTOBER 2018
The research also exposed the actions those small firms, who will be impacted by Brexit, intend to take between now and the time the UK leaves the EU in preparation for a no deal Brexit. 35 per cent of small businesses say that they would postpone major business decisions or innovations, while around one in five (21%) say they would cut staff or expenditure. Responding to the findings, FSB National Chairman, Mike Cherry, said: “Looking at this research it is obvious that our small firms are not prepared or ready for a chaotic no deal Brexit and the impact that it will have on their businesses. “If you sell your products to the EU, buy goods from the EU or if your business relies on staff from the EU, you now see this outcome as a clear and present threat to
your business. “It is deeply troubling that the prospect of a no deal Brexit is seeing many small firms shelving business decisions, pausing investment and more drastically, thinking about cutting staff. These businesses are the growth engines of the UK economy and it is critical that the Government listens to their worries. “At this stage, it is understandable that some small businesses haven’t starting preparing as they aren’t actually aware of what they are planning for. What we need now is the Government to work with the small business community to ensure that they are adequately prepared and supported if a no deal Brexit becomes a more likely outcome in the coming weeks. “The concern is that with only six months to go before exit day, we are now in a race against the clock to avoid a situation where we crash out of the EU causing significant damage to our smallest businesses. This must be avoided at all costs.”

Checkmate Fire Solutions’ Expansion Continues With Harlow Move
have had to expand our presence in the region. “This increased focus on fire safety among property managers and owners is not just good for Checkmate, it is also a real positive for the public. Improved passive fire protection makes workplaces and living spaces safer for everyone who works, sleeps in or visits those buildings, and that has to be a good thing.” Checkmate was established in Yorkshire as a supplier and installer of fire stopping in 1989 and, claim the company, has since grown into the UK’s largest passive fire protection specialist. From its headquarters in Elland and offices in Birmingham and the south of England, it now operates two divisions – compliance and solutions.
Mark Williams, Checkmate’s Chief Executive Officer
Passive fire protection specialist Checkmate Fire Solutions is relocating its south-east office to larger premises in Harlow as a result of ongoing growth. The Yorkshire-headquartered business has been running its operations across the whole of southern England from an office in Dunmow, Essex. However, with demand for Checkmate’s compliance and third-party accredited installation services increasing, it is now implementing an expansion plan for the region. The first part of the plan will see it move from Dunmow in September 2018 to a bigger site in Harlow, from where it will service its customers in London and the south-east. It will then
open a new office base for its operations in the south-west of England the following month, says the company. Mark Williams, Checkmate’s Chief Executive Officer, said: “Estate managers and business owners now take passive fire protection more seriously than ever before, so it is natural that so many of them have chosen to appoint Checkmate’s teams of third-party accredited specialists for inspections, installations and remediation work. “We’ve seen orders from facilities management contractors, NHS trusts, universities, housing associations and commercial property owners in the south grow sharply over the past couple of years, so we

Its services include passive fire specification consultancy, fire door inspections and fire compliance surveys, complete with associated certification and recertification services. Repair And Maintenance Is A Growing
Marketplace As many properties enter the next phase of home improvement there is a new trend developing in simply replacing the IGU’s and servicing existing frames rather than installing full replacement products. CORGI Fenestration says many customers are requesting certification of this activity and paperwork to indicate they have had the work completed, saving any arguments if they decide to sell the property.
The organisation has been approached by its customers to provide a solution and says it is pleased to announce that it is now taking notifications for the repair and maintenance of all fenestration products and installation of replacement IGU’s. CEO Chris Mayne said “We have always intended to cover the entire supply chain and included repair and maintenance within that. Customers want the same assurances when having work conducted on their property whether it be new installations or repair and maintenance. This offers another section of the supply chain the ability to demonstrate their integrity and competence and gives the homeowner the reassurance they are asking for.” The process of notification is the same online system used for the notification of new installa-
tions and can be completed job by job or bulk upload. Existing CORGI Fenestration companies will simply indicate the repair work carried out on their notification submissions. Companies who only carry out repair & maintenance activities will be able to offer their customers: • Registration of the repair with CORGI Fenestration • Invitation to a TripAdvisor style customer rating scheme, RateYourInstallation, with installer right of reply which allows companies to analyse the performance of their depots and teams as well as publicising their consumer ratings. • Use of the CORGI Fenestration Complaints procedure • CORGI Fenestration Installation certificate, covering all the work undertaken, delivered digitally resulting in a quicker service for the customer. If you carry out repair and maintenance of fenestration products and are interested in becoming CORGI Fenestration registered then please contact CORGI Fenestration to discuss your needs. www.corgifenestration.co.uk

‘Blue Planet’ Inspires Windows
Company To Go Green
Sheffield Window Centre has extended the REHAU TOTAL70 range to include REHAU Co-extruded profile, enabling them to provide customers with an environmentally-friendly and sustainable option when choosing their next PVC-U windows. Located in the heart of Sheffield, the family-owned fabrication and installation business has been making high quality PVC-U windows and doors for over 40 years. In 1991, the company started fabricating REHAU profiles, and Sheffield Window Centre now fabricates and installs the whole TOTAL70 range. When REHAU launched its co-extruded TOTAL70 profile – containing a recycled core of up to 100% post-consumer and post-industrial waste material – Sheffield Window Centre saw a real opportunity to complete its portfolio and enhance the offer for more eco-conscious consumers. Ian Hunter Jr, Managing Director 18 WINDOW NEWS OCTOBER 2018
at Sheffield Window Centre said: “There has been a real change in attitudes towards plastic in the last few years and the recent ‘Blue Planet’ TV series has kickstarted a lot of businesses into reviewing their plastic usage and finding ways to reduce. And, as a business which manufactures using PVC-U products, we needed to act too. “So when REHAU’s co-extruded profile became available, we jumped at the chance to adopt them within our manufacturing process. We wanted to do our bit for the planet – not just because that’s the socially responsible thing to do, but also to reassure our customers that they can buy good quality, PVC-U windows that are sustainable and more environmently friendly.” A large majority of Sheffield Window Centre’s installations replace first generation PVC-U windows. Now the old windows are collected by REHAU and taken to its specialist recycling centre PVCR based in Manchester to be recycled into
material which can then be reused at REHAU’s extrusion plant in Blaenau Ffestiniog North Wales to produce the co-extruded TOTAL70 profile, thereby providing a closed loop of material use. PVC-U can normally be recycled up to 10 times, but because of the improved processes introduced at PVCR, REHAU’s co-extruded profile could possibly be recycled many more times than this. The performance of the co-extruded TOTAL70 profile achieves the high requirements of REHAU’s TOTAL70 range and are fully certified under BSI Kitemark License KM 13358, so Sheffield Window Centre can offer eco-conscious customers a sustainable, recycled product without any decrease in product performance. An added benefit includes no increase in overall cost of product compared with the rest of the range, so there is no fabrication and supply financial uplift for thinking green. And already Sheffield Window Centre has moved all of its customers over to the co-extruded range. Ian continues: “Visually, the co-extruded profiles look identical to the rest of the TOTAL70 range with no change in performance or price. So we are delighted that the co-extruded profile is driving our sales, and we know that we are offering the most environmentally friendly PVC-U windows on the market.” Rick Cole, Area Sales Manager for REHAU said: “The TOTAL70 Co-extruded range has hit the market at a time when people are generally more aware of the environmental issues facing the planet and what needs to be done to reverse the damage. Sheffield Window Centre were keen right from the off to take our recycled product, and they have a genuine enthusiasm to sell it to customers – so I believe it’s going to do big things for them and the environment.”www.rehau.uk/windows or www.pvcr.co.uk

Unglazed R9 Window Completes Test Programme
The HWL window was put through its paces in a series of initial tests by independent testing house, Exova in April. The BS EN 6375 – 1 Weather Test results, completed on a side hung option returning an Exposure Category of 1600, a Class 3 Air Permeability Rating (600pa); a Class 9A (600pa) Water Tightness Rating; and top Class C4 (1600pa), resistance to wind. These were followed up by PAS24 testing, again by Exova and in partnership with Residence 9, in May for mechanical load and manual intervention testing, also returning a pass. With further tests on top-hung options completed at the end of August.
HWL Trade Frames’ non-glass bonded Residence 9 Window has completed final independent testing, delivered in partnership with R9.
With all of its’ pre-existing customers now buying its nonglass bonded R9 windows, HWL argues installers can cut their installation costs by up to a third by switching from buying in mechanically jointed sashes, to its Timberweld® R9 sash by reducing weight and simplifying handling and installation costs.
The specialist trade fabricator has led the development of an R9 frame-only offer, pioneering the application of Timberweld® sash-welding technologies in its manufacturing process. This gives HWL an almost unique capability in the UK to butt weld window sashes inside and out, replicating the aesthetic delivered in a 90° mechanical joint. This increases sash corner strength, which in most configurations eliminates the requirement to glass bond IGUs, which have historically been used in R9 fabrication to give the system structural strength. Tests on side-hung casement options were completed earlier in the year, returning a series of top-rated passes under BS EN 6375 – 1 weather testing and PAS24/Part Q. These have now been followed up over the sum-

mer with a series of approvals on top-hung options. Mark Haley, Managing Director, HWL Trade Frames, said: “We’ve always known how good the R9 Timberweld® is. With independent tests now complete on top-hung, in addition to those already completed on side hung windows, we can offer installers access to a proven product, not only in terms of technical performance but also commercial advantage.”
“If it’s damaged later down the line, you can be looking at whole window replacement because sashes will have weathered and replacement with a new sash against an older frame often stands out to the point that you have no choice but to replace it. “There are efficiencies and savings in installation but also a very strong message to the consumer and we have customers who are winning business on the back of it.” www.hwlwindows.co.uk WINDOW NEWS OCTOBER 2018 19

London Overtaken By Rest Of Great Britain In Housebuilding Growth
London’s homebuilders have been outpaced by the rest of Great Britain as investment in housebuilding dropped to its lowest value in six years. Res22 WINDOW NEWS OCTOBER 2018
idential contracts awarded in London in 2017 were 34% lower than the value awarded in 2016, which is in contrast to the majority of regions outside of the
capital that experienced growth. The latest data has come from the ‘Regional Construction Hotspots in Great Britain 2018’ report from industry analysts Barbour ABI and the Construction Products Association, which highlights the levels of construction contract values awarded in 2017 across all regions of Great Britain. Hotspots and coldspots identify the areas where contract awards were significantly above or below previous years, highlighting pockets of activity or contraction. Although London is the largest regional GB economy, and had £3.6 billion of residential contracts awarded in 2017, an increase in demand for new homes is coming from areas such as Manchester, Birmingham, and Sheffield as they undergo city centre regeneration projects. Across all GB regions, London came bottom for residential contracts growth, with overall values falling by 33.9% from 2016 to 2017. For residential contracts, cold-
TRADE NEWS spots are clustered across inner and outer boroughs of the capital, with only two hotspots of construction activity in Haringey and Islington and Hounslow and Richmond upon Thames. All other areas in London experienced a fall in contract value, with the largest falls in Tower Hamlets, Lambeth, Waltham Forest and Croydon. Similarly, the commercial sector in London experienced sharp falls, with commercial contracts falling by 38.5% from 2016 to 2017, totalling £2.1 billion. Of the London regions only Croydon was an area of hotspots activity, driven by higher volumes of low-value retail and office fit-out projects. Michael Dall, Lead Economist at Barbour ABI commented: “The decline of residential building in London highlights the changing landscape of construction across the UK. What our report shows is that, driven by consumer demand, developers are frequently looking outside of the capital for new residential investments, highlighted in growth cities such as Manchester and Sheffield.” Rebecca Larkin, Construction Products Association Senior Economist said: “London has slipped from its position as a residential star performer as the slowdown in inner and outer London housing markets appears to have cooled developer confidence. House prices in the capital have been falling since the middle of 2017, but this is unlikely to ease affordability constraints. The average London house price is more than double that in the North West, West Midlands and Yorkshire & Humber, and combined with stronger uptake of Help to Buy in these regions, is helping to underpin regional housing demand.” www.barbour-abi.com

A long term commitment to choosing only high quality Rapierstar window and door fasteners is helping REHAU fabricator Dessian to deliver on its promise of superior performance in-use and minimal future call-backs. The company, which operates two trade fabrication plants in Belfast and Cumbernauld, has now been using Rapierstar fasteners in the manufacture of its wide range of PVC-U doors and windows for twelve years. These components are an essential part of a carefully considered specification for Dessian’s REHAU Tritec (60mm) and REHAU TOTAL70 (70mm) system windows and doors, which are tested to BS7412 and PAS24 to offer enhanced security and achieve the Secured by Design standard. Stephen Thurley, Production & Technical Manager at Dessian Products says, “Everyone at Dessian has worked hard over the past three decades to create a culture built around service and product quality which exceeds customer expectations. That’s why we leave no stone unturned when it comes to the components and raw materials that we
use in the manufacture of our windows and doors. “We understand the need for technical excellence in every aspect of the window or door’s construction and that includes the smallest components – the fasteners. That’s why we value the products supplied by Rapierstar, which we know we can depend on technically, and the company’s delivery reliability is crucially important to help us maintain efficiency and productivity across our factories.” Paul McAuley, Rapierstar’s Technical Sales Manager for Ireland & Scotland, adds, “It’s satisfying to think that the Rapierstar fasteners used to manufacture Dessian windows and doors back when we started supplying them in 2006 are still there today, doing the job they were supposed to do. Dessian’s excellent reputation in the market demonstrates that they are delivering a quality finished product and we hope that Rapierstar fasteners will continue to make a positive contribution here for many more years to come.” .at www.rapierstar.com

Over recent weeks there’s been increased debate about what exactly is the definition of ‘suited hardware.’ For years we have been sold door furniture ranges under this banner, yet this definition is now being questioned. The Cambridge Dictionary suggests that suite is a noun often used in relation to ‘a set of furniture for one room, of matching design and colour.’ So, for the door furniture sector it would seem that the term ‘suited’ would be appropriate only when all components share similarities in both finish and shape. This point was fundamental to the design process for Sweet, a completely new range of door furniture that’s featured on the Red Dot World 28 WINDOW NEWS OCTOBER 2018

Whilst this became a talking point in national media regarding the show’s accuracy to its time, it also highlights progression in our industry, showing that new products with a range of benefits, such as PVCu, can be used effectively in period

heritage style windows are growing in popularity due to the low maintenance, durability and thermally efficient properties, as well as the wide range of colour options offered by manufacturers like Roseview Windows. This ‘modernised’ approach to conserving architecture has become increasingly popular in several major cities across the country. Despite this progression the preservation of original window features in older buildings and those within conservation areas remains closely monitored by local authorities – and planning regulations often stipulate the likefor-like repair, refurbishment or replacement of timber frames. To counter this, manufacturers such as Roseview Windows are designing and redesigning products based not just on the feedback from customers but also from conservation officers in several regions across the country. Through the years the thickness of window profiles have been reduced to keep in with the slickness and slenderness of timber. We have slowly moved away from typical welded profiles – often a tell-tale sign that the profile is PVCu– to keep the window more mechanical and in line with what the modern customers demand. buildings with no impact on their aesthetic. In many streets around the UK you will find 19th and 20th century buildings quietly contributing towards the character of our towns and cities. At one time there was a school of thought that only timber frames could maintain the traditional appearance of these older buildings. It is true that traditional timber windows offer aesthetic appeal, but have declined due to their lack of durability and ability to withstand changing weather patterns in addition to high costs and high maintenance require-
ments. Because of this, homeowners today are looking for timber alternatives that keep in with the original architecture of properties but have the modern benefits of PVCu. So, this reluctance to allow new materials in place of the timber frames of course posed development issues and many an ongoing liaison between building owner or project manager and planning officer. Now thanks to advancements in the design of PVCu windows, particularly vertical sliders, this has begun to change and PVCu
Richard notes that today the company’s biggest growing sector is refurbishment on conservation properties and high-end new build architecture is generally moving back to sash window style, which looks more like timber but offers all the benefits that PVCu provides.

Flush Sash Forecast To Become Mainstream Window 45-degree corner grooves.
Independent research of the PVC-U flush sash market reports nearly half of the fabricators interviewed see flush sashes becoming as important as standard casement windows in the next 10 years. And a quarter of those who don’t make flush sashes now said they expected to start in the next twelve months. The research was undertaken for Timberweld® by MRA Research. Timberweld is a patented method of welding perfect corners to create an authentic timber-look butt-joint effect. Uniquely, Timberweld allows fabricators to create the timber-look on both sides of the window.
Earlier this year Timberweld commissioned MRA Research to conduct independent research into the flush sash and timber alternative market with fabricators. All the fabricators interviewed welded their flush sashes, with 85% of joints (by volume) being welded and 15% mechanically jointed. Ninety percent of those who welded, welded conventionally with
“Most of the fabricators who were interviewed loved the look of the flush sash, in particular the timber-look butt joints,” comments Alan Burgess, Managing Director of Timberweld. “They saw demand growing fast, but a significant number thought mechanically jointing was ‘a pain to fabricate’ and want to weld to meet volume demand cost effectively. And ‘aesthetically’, hidden welding was rated the best.” Alan adds: “The research echoes what we’ve found in the market – fabricators are looking to create a timber look butt-joint cost-effectively at scale, in order to take advantage of the opportunities the flush sash market offers.” www.timberweld.co.uk WINDOW NEWS OCTOBER 2018 37

compatible with its narrow frame. Obviously, the system had to incorporate enough locking points and offer first rate security, but crucially it needed to be short enough to fit correctly inside the sash. It was also essential that the window lock was competitively priced. We found that Nemesis ticked all these boxes.
Origin, one of the UK’s leading manufacturer of aluminium doors and windows, has chosen the Nemesis multi-point window locking system from Kenrick for its brand new aluminium window – the Origin Slimline Window. The Buckinghamshire-based manufacturer is now ramping up production of the new window and has just doubled its latest order for Nemesis to meet rising customer demand. Built from high-grade aluminium. the Origin Slimline Window has been designed with an ultra-slim frame (65mm) to maximise the amount of light and achieve ultimate views. To maintain the window’s signature slim sightlines, it was essential that it incorporated a locking system with the shortest possible backset and the smallest mushroom cams that would fit snugly inside the sash. Having reviewed every other system on the market, Origin chose Nemesis from Kenrick. Neil Ginger, CEO at Origin, explains: “We launched our new Slimline Window in response to a significant demand for a slimmer sightlined window that offered a wider customer appeal, without compromising on quality. This initially posed a challenge for us because we needed to source a multi-point locking system that was 38 WINDOW NEWS OCTOBER 2018

We’re confident that Kenrick will be able to keep pace with the growth of this product and I’m looking forward to a long and successful partnership with them.” Steve Williams, Kenrick’s sales and marketing director, added: “We’re passionate about our customers and we want to add value to their businesses by creating products that meet their exacting needs. White light is the light you see and experience all around you, while UV light is something that you normally have to protect yourself against, using dark glasses, skin lotions, or protective clothing. In sunnier parts of the world, that would mean all three methods to protect outside workers who are likely to be exposed to UV. For someone working in a busy decorative glass department bonding glass bevels to sealed units and mirrors all day long, significant exposure to UV via the UV light box, necessary for that system, held considerable long-term concerns for their health and well-being. A decorative glass worker would usually hold the bevel in place with bare hands while the light box shone UV light through the glass and onto skin and eyes. www.nano470.co.uk WINDOW NEWS OCTOBER 2018 47

Driving Understanding Of Why Fire Resistant Glazing Is ‘Specified
For A Reason’
®
Despite the potentially catastrophic consequences of changing a specification for glazing, doors and windows which offer passive fire protection, specifications are still being routinely altered just to save a few pounds or due to a lack of technical understanding, according to leading fire, thermal and acoustic insulation manufacturer Promat UK. Promat UK is supporting the market with a campaign to raise awareness of the significant risks of changing even the tiniest detail in the specification of building elements that are designed to protect lives and properties. At the heart of this is its ‘Specified for a Reason®’ message, which has now been 48 WINDOW NEWS OCTOBER 2018
registered as a trademark by Promat UK and serves as a reminder to everyone in the supply chain that the configuration of fire resistant glazing, partitions and doors simply must not be changed. Ian Cowley, Regional Director (UK and Scandinavia) at Promat UK says: “For fire resistant glazing to deliver on its promise, it has to be tested as a complete system. All the elements and components are chosen to work together to achieve the level of fire resistance required. Change one element – such as the glass type or glazing beads – and there is absolutely no guarantee that the installation will offer protection above what you’d expect from standard glazing.
“Altering the specification on any aspect of a building’s design is nothing new, of course, and it is often very well-intentioned, but when lives are at stake it is too big a risk to take. If you change the specification of solar control glazing designed to prevent overheating, for example, the worst case scenario is that occupants may complain that their building is too warm in Summer months. Change a passive fire protection specification and it could mean the fire protection is as little as a few minutes, rather than the 30, 60 or 120 minutes it was intended to deliver – endangering life should the worst happen.” Promat UK is working to ensure clients and specifiers can have total peace of mind when specifying fire resistant glazing. This includes practical guidance via an educational programme, including through its RIBA-approved CPD seminar, along with technical support at the earliest design stage. It also has numerous QA processes and checks in place to ensure that products are manufactured to a consistently high standard under the requirements of ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 (both 2015). Ian continues: “It’s imperative for clients to have confidence in the full supply chain from product design and manufacture, through to post-installation checks. This is the ethos that lies behind our 360 degree ‘wheel of assurance’ and is the basis for our Promat SYSTEMGLAS® range.” www.promat-glass.co.uk

The building serves as a hub for the campus, providing core facilities including a gym, and also houses the Easter Bush Science Outreach Centre for engaging the public with science. The designers brief was to create a building that would reflect the cutting-edge work happening inside, as well as providing a bright and modern space to attract world-class academics, students and businesses to the institution. The heart of the centre is a dramatic full-height glazed atrium which incorporates a series of bridges at higher levels linking laboratory spaces in the building’s two distinct wings. Atkins, the architects wanted to make the space as bright and open as possible, so specified a structurally glazed wall and a

To achieve this, Atkins worked closely with specialist façade contractor Charles Henshaw & Son and the Pilkington design team. This resulted in the highly engineered Pilkington Planar™ system being used innovatively creating a striking glass atrium. Pilkington UK Supports Ground-Breaking
Energy-Positive Office Project Pilkington United Kingdom Limited has contributed glazing and technical expertise to academics at the SPECIFIC Innovation and Knowledge Centre (IKC) at Swansea University, to help deliver the UK’s first net energy-positive commercial building. The Active Office, located on Swansea University’s new £450 million Bay Campus, is a prototype for net energy-positive commercial spaces and aims to demonstrate the organisation’s broader ‘buildings as power stations’ concept. Over an annual cycle the building is designed to generate more energy than it 56 WINDOW NEWS OCTOBER 2018
consumes. The 400 sq m structure features working space for 25 people beneath a curved roof with laminated photovoltaic cells able to generate 22kW of electrical power at peak output. A range of additional technologies enable it to generate, store and release solar energy in a single, integrated system that can be easily and commercially replicated. The Active Office, funded by Innovate UK, builds upon the principles developed with the Active Classroom, a learning
and education demonstrator, designed by SPECIFIC, located at the same site. These two buildings can share information and energy providing a small ecosystem for further demonstration of Active Technologies. The classroom project, which uses a range of innovative renewable energy and efficiency-enhancing technologies, contains a laboratory and classroom used for teaching students. For that project, Pilkington also supplied its PilkingtonSunplus™ BIPV glass, which features photovoltaic power-generation technology,

turning the windows into an energy source for the building. Achieving a net energy generation performance involves a combination of reduced energy demand and renewable energy supply. As well as exporting electricity to the grid when possible, the development also uses electrical and thermal storage to allow generated energy to be used directly by occupants and is also capable of timeshifting energy usage to periods of lower demand, reducing stress on the local infrastructure. The innovative, energy-efficient design also features low-emissivity, double-glazed aluminium-clad timber frame windows and doors, incorporating Pilkington energiKare™ Advantage glass, which help to reduce its energy use. Pilkington energiKare™ Advantage is twice as energy-efficient as standard double glazing as it uses advanced dual coatings to reduce heat loss through windows and allows more heat from the sun to enter the building – this effect is known as solar gain. This improves the energy efficiency of the windows and subsequently helps to reduce the cost of heating bills. Pilkington is the strategic glass partner to SPECIFIC – which is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, Innovate UK and the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government – and has worked closely with academics and other industry partners – such as Tata Steel UK and Akzo Nobel – to address the challenge of delivering low-carbon electricity and heat in UK buildings effectively and efficiently. The Active Classroom scooped the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Design Through Innovation award, in addition to the
2018 RICS Project of the Year, Wales award. Judges commented that the project “offers a clear path to the future of construction and power generation in the same package”. Tony Smith, Business Development & Value Added Products Manager for Pilkington UK and Ireland, said: “Thinking about how energy is used, generated and stored in the built environment in future is one of the biggest challenges the UK construction industry faces. We’re committed to -contributing to the effort by developing and delivering new advances in energy-efficient glazing technology. “Forging strong links with academia so that there is a robust route for cutting-edge technology to feed into products available commercially is a key part of our ethos as a business, and projects like the Active Office and Active Classroom each play an important part in this process, demonstrating what can be achieved when the right combination of technologies, expertise and working partnerships is in place.” Justin Searle, Industrial Technology Director at SPECIFIC, said: “When it comes to improving the overall efficiency of buildings, it is not the performance of any individual product that matters most, but how all of the elements work together to generate, store and release energy. “This project is not just about showing what can be achieved by the right combination of products, but also getting construction industry partners working closely together to develop the skills and ways of working that will deliver better performing buildings in the future.” pilkington.com/en-GB/uk

QUALICOAT
Completed early in 2014, windows were replaced at AkzoNobel Dulux head offices in Slough with a QUALICOAT Class 2 powder coated aluminium system supplied and installed by Jordan of Tewkesbury. Whilst Class 1 powder protection properties are excellent, there are two further measures which specifiers need to take into consideration when specifying powder coating: that of colour variation and gloss retention. By using powder with more robust compounds, both colour variation and gloss retention can be tighter controlled for a longer period. Typically, these QUALICOAT Class 2 powders, also known as ‘Super Durable’ powders, offer much tighter tolerances over time on colour variation and gloss retention without sacrificing the high substrate protection offered by the powder coating process. Coated over a chrome, chrome-free or flash anodising pretreatment process, these powders can also be applied to meet the QUALICOAT ‘Seaside Class’ for projects exposed in a harsher environment. www.qualicoatuki.org WINDOW NEWS OCTOBER 2018 57

Yale Sponsors National Home Security Month To Help Fortify Britain’s Homes inum 3 Star cylinder, Platinum 2 Star cylinder pull, and the Postmaster Professional TS008 Letter-plate.
Yale Door and Window Solutions is proud to sponsor National Home Security Month (NHSM) for its sixth year this October. The campaign, which highlights the importance of home security to UK homeowners, is helping drive demand for security products and installation services nationwide. The theme for this year’s campaign is ‘Make your home your castle’, playing on the old English proverb. A person’s property should be a place they take pride in, spend time with loved ones and most of all feel safe. However, much like a castle needs to have defences in place from attacks, homeowners need to protect their sanctuary from the threat of burglars. As a result, NHSM will be providing information and advice throughout the month. Paul Atkinson, Sales and Commercial Director for Yale Door and Window Solutions, commented: “NHSM is a great initiative to get involved with. Taking place in October, it coincides with the onset of the clocks going back and darker winter evenings which is a pivotal period for security sales and a time
when people consider upgrading doors and windows, when consumers awareness of home burglary increases. “Unfortunately, across the UK, a considerable number of homeowners admit to having no home security measures in place, with most turning to security reactively when a burglary occurs, rather than preventing the issue beforehand. NHSM is attempting to change this attitude by pushing home security to the forefront of people’s minds. This presents a lucrative opportunity to installers and fabricators alike to raise awareness of the subject and engage with customers.” Week two of the campaign in particular presents a prime opportunity for door and window fabricators and installers, as it looks at securing the entry points of a home and valuables within it. Dubbed ‘Setting the standard’, the week explores traditional window and door locks and delves into the latest standards and technical specifications such as PAS24 and TS008. This provides an ideal opportunity to up-sell British Standard locking solutions, such as the Yale Plat-
However, opportunities are not limited to week two. Week four of the campaign falls when the clocks go back, and while the rest of the UK winds back, NHSM is looking forward with its ‘Future focused’ week. This will have a particular emphasis on smart door locks, such as the Conexisâ L1. More and more homeowners are investing in smart security devices that can be controlled remotely via a smartphone but want a trade professional to install devices for them. This week will provide information to customers on the benefits of smart security and gives installers a great opportunity to capitalise on a growing marketplace. Other weeks include a focus on alarms, outdoor security and how homeowners can protect their sheds and outbuildings, and also a seasonal look at Halloween and Bonfire Night – statistically the worst time of year for domestic burglaries and damage*. For those fabricators, distributors and installers that sign up to support this year’s campaign, NHSM will provide a range of promotional collateral and marketing materials that can be distributed to customers and used online and in-store to help raise awareness of the campaign and boost security sales. CHARITY
Sam said: “Reaching the summit of Ben Nevis and punching through the cloud layer to a stunning view was a truly fantastic experience. The challenge was also a great opportunity to meet new people in different sectors of the business. Despite the difficulties of waking up at the crack of dawn and encountering the welsh drizzle, I’d certainly have another go at it and possibly try and get them bagged in under 24 hours!”
REHAU’s Windows Solutions Team Complete The Three Peaks Challenge For Charity The adventurous Windows Solutions team at REHAU has successfully conquered the famous Three Peaks Challenge this September raising a total of £7,500 so far, for the company’s chosen charity of the year, Scope. The challenge brought together 27 people from different departments and locations across the UK, Ireland and Italy and comprised of climbs up Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon. That’s a walk of more than 26 miles, a total climb of over 10,000 feet and more than 450 miles driven between the peaks! Of those that took part in the challenge, Arthur Dylan Roberts, Kevin O’Neill, Sam Tynan, Richard Hardstaff, Andy Pinnock and Faye Tompkins represented the Windows Solutions team. 60% of those who participated declared victory and completed the challenge in less than 30 hours. The team enjoyed stunning panoramic views of the lochs and amazing weather conditions 70 WINDOW NEWS OCTOBER 2018
during the first climb at Ben Nevis on the Saturday morning, even witnessing a rare sighting of a brocken spectre right at the top! They joined together to work through the more challenging parts of the trek, walking in low temperatures, darkness, wind and rain on Saturday evening at Scafell Pike and encountering tough terrain, mist, and another downpour in the early hours of the Sunday morning on Snowdon. The inclement weather wasn’t a deterrent, only helping to reinforce the group’s positive spirit and determination to complete the challenge and they were overjoyed upon achieving this. Many have described this as an extremely rewarding experience and one of the highlights of their time at REHAU. Sam Tynan, Junior Sales Manager at REHAU was among those who completed the Three Peaks challenge together with Communications Coordinator – Windows, Faye Tompkins and Technical Manager, Arthur Dylan Roberts.
“The Three Peaks sparked some new friendships and the morale of all the participants were high all through the challenge.” Faye said. “We’re on the lookout for our next big test and are currently batting ideas around. It’s definitely the start of something quite special for us and it was all the more rewarding doing it with such a motivated group of people. It was one of the best things I’ve ever done!” Kevin O’Neill, Commercial Manager at REHAU also shared his thoughts on the experience: “It was a very well organised event and I applaud the efforts of the organising teams and all who participated to help raise money for a well deserving charity. The positive team spirit and overwhelming support from everyone pushed me to do my very best and we definitely made some wonderful memories.” To assist the walkers in raising money, a fundraising event was held each month from April to August. All money raised will go to Scope, REHAU UK’s charity of the year 2018. On completing the challenge, REHAU employees were treated to a celebratory lunch in Blaenau, where REHAU’s manufacturing facility is located.
