CONTENTS

This guide will help you find a variety of opportunities to volunteer in Windsor. Retuning volunteers can sign up for events and trainings on the Volunteer Portal. New volunteers can complete a volunteer application by following the links in the guide. For more information about volunteer opportunities, contact the Volunteer Coordinator.

Note: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by a volunteer to successfully perform the essential functions of these positions.

These position descriptions are not intended to be an exclusive list of all of the requirements, duties, tasks, roles or responsibilities associated with the positions. Planning a volunteer experience for your organization

If your club, school group, church, company or other organization is interested in setting up a volunteer experience with the Town of Windsor, please contact the Volunteer Coordinator. We will do our best to accommodate your request according to our staffing, capacity and project availability, however we cannot fulfill every request.

PARKS & TRAILS ADOPTION PROGRAM

Do you want to make a difference while volunteering on your own schedule? Take pride in your public spaces by adopting a park or a trail! This includes weekly and monthly responsibilities and involves at least a one-year commitment.

Adopt-a-Trail

Become a steward of a favorite trail by finding a section to care for. Remove litter and noxious weeds on a regular basis, replace dog bags as needed.

Adopt-a-Park

Gather a group of friends, family or coworkers and perform monthly cleanups at the park, plus some weekly duties including bed maintenance and reporting as needed.

How to Get Started

1. Assemble a team! Your team could be neighbors, family or coworkers.

2. Choose a park or section of trail to adopt. Use the map to explore areas.

3. Contact the Volunteer Coordinator to schedule a tour of the park or trail.

HOST Volunteer Team

(History, Open Spaces & Trails)

This team is dedicated to preserving Windsor’s natural history. All volunteer activities take place in Windsor’s open spaces and trails. These positions require a one-year commitment and all volunteers must be able to attend the required trainings. Training is free to volunteers. Participants must be 18 years or older.

Windsor Naturalist

Bring your love of the outdoors into the lives of others by leading educational outdoor experiences.

Trail Docent

Greet trail users and share information about Windsor’s natural history by operating a ‘trail trunk’ of nature artifacts.

Bring your love of the outdoors into the lives of others by leading educational outdoor experiences.

Essential Job Functions

• Educate the community about natural history and Windsor’s open spaces and trails.

• Lead programs for all ages and audiences.

• Facilitate groups of up to 20 people.

• Prepare materials and supplies for programs.

• Familiarize yourself with Windsor history curriculum.

• Engage with the public in a positive and respectful manner.

• Accurately represent the Town of Windsor to the public.

• Support the mission and vision of Town of Windsor Parks, Recreation and Culture.

Commitment

• Attend training in its entirety (3 Saturdays plus self-guided online components).

• Lead at least 3 programs a year.

• Optional opportunities to assist with additional nature programming. Your commitment ensures that you are prepared for the position and allows us to offer consistent and reliable programming to our community members.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Must be able to pass a background check.

• Must be able to stand outdoors for several hours at a time.

• Excellent customer service, public speaking, and public engagement skills.

• Past teaching/group leadership experience is preferred but not required.

Working Environment and Physical Environment

• Must be able to tolerate various weather conditions within reason.

• Must be able to stand and walk outdoors for at least an hour at a time.

• Must be comfortable public speaking and working in groups.

• Environment may have limited facilities such as bathrooms and shelter.

TRAIL DOCENT

• Familiarize yourself with Windsor history curriculum and Windsor’s trail system.

• Engage with the public in a positive and respectful manner.

• Accurately represent the Town of Windsor to the public.

• Support the mission and vision of Town of Windsor Parks, Recreation and Culture.

Commitment

• Attend training in its entirety (3 Saturdays plus self-guided online components).

• Host a Trail Trunk at least once a month May-October.

• Optional opportunities to assist with additional nature programming. Your commitment ensures that you are prepared for the position and allows us to offer consistent and reliable programming to our community members.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Must be able to pass a background check.

• Must be able to stand outdoors for several hours at a time.

• Must be able to travel to trailheads and transport educational materials.

• Excellent customer service, public speaking and public engagement skills.

• Past teaching/group leadership experience is preferred but not required.

Working Environment and Physical Environment

• Must be able to tolerate various weather conditions within reason.

• Must be able to stand and sit outdoors for several hours at a time.

• Must be comfortable public speaking and interacting with the public.

• Docents may work in pairs or individually.

TRAIL AMBASSADOR

Regularly monitor trails for safety and maintenance issues. Observe and record wildlife and trail user trends.

Essential Job Functions

• Become familiar with Windsor’s trail system and trail regulations.

• Be able to give directions to trail users as necessary.

• Traverse the trails frequently, observing for trends and issues.

• Perform light trail maintenance, like litter pickup and dog bag replacement.

• Engage with the public in a positive and respectful manner.

• Accurately represent the Town of Windsor to the public.

• Support the mission and vision of Town of Windsor Parks, Recreation and Culture.

Commitment

• Attend training in its entirety (1 Saturdays plus at least one group bike ride).

• Walk or bike the trails regularly and keep service notes at lease once a month.

• Optional opportunities to assist with additional nature programming. Your commitment ensures that you are prepared for the position and allows us to offer consistent and reliable programming to our community members.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Must be able to pass a background check.

• Must be able to traverse trail system regularly.

• Excellent customer service, public speaking and public engagement skills.

• Familiarity with Windsor’s trail system and trail guidelines.

Working Environment and Physical Environment

• Must be able to tolerate various weather conditions within reason.

• Training will require riding a bicycle.

• Service will require either walking, running, or cycling on the trails.

• Does not require interacting with the pulic.

BICYCLE CHAMPIONS

Share your love of bicycles by helping with bike fleet maintenance, bike events and bike safety programs. Apply at bit.ly/BicycleChampionsVolunteer

Windsor has a great variety of bike-related programming and events. Volunteers will help maintain the town’s bike fleet, educate the public at events like Bike Everywhere, teach the Safe Routes to School curriculum and help with trail scavenger hunts.

Working Environment and Physical Environment

• The physical requirements of this position include but are not limited to: lifting up to 50 pounds; standing, walking or cycling for several hours at a time; use of hand tools.

• Fleet maintenance duties may be independent or unsupervised.

• The volunteer environment includes both inside and outside conditions; exposed to weather conditions; subject to noise and crowds.

Essential Job Functions

• Engage with staff and the community in a positive and respectful manner.

• Set up event supplies, such as tables, chairs, tents and trail signage as needed.

• Advocate for bicycle safety and teach Safe Routes to School curriculum.

• Perform light bicycle maintenance, such as tire repair, cleaning and adjustments.

• Interact with the public in a positive, respectful and responsible manner.

• Accurately represent the Town of Windsor when engaging with the public.

• Support the mission and vision of Town of Windsor Parks, Recreation and Culture.

Commitment

• Serve on an occasional basis. Respond to calls for volunteer support at bicycle events when available. Learn about bike safety and advocate when possible.

• There is no set schedule for this opportunity. Volunteer as needed when available.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Work independently in an event setting while interacting positively with the public.

• Ability to perform light bicycle maintenance or willingness to learn.

• Knowledge of bicycle safety best practices or willingness to learn.

• Must be able to follow instructions and work independently to install signage and set up trail activities and events.

• Teaching or coaching experience is a valuable asset but not required.

• Some volunteers may be given the option to help with children’s programming, in which case they must be able to pass a criminal background check.

Nature of Work

W indsor’s events bring together the community for fun and excitement. Help ensure events like the Summer Concert Series, 4th of July, Harvest Festival and other Windsor favorites are successful by helping with setup, crowd management and cleanup.

• The physical requirements of this position are considered Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

• Standing, walking, kneeling, etc. for periods of more than four to six hours.

• The volunteer environment includes both inside and outside conditions; temperatures above 100 degrees and below 32 degrees for periods of more than one hour; subject to noise and crowds.

Essential Job Functions

• Engage with staff and the community in a positive and respectful manner.

• Set up event supplies, such as tables, chairs, tents, event fencing, power equipment, etc. prior to events as needed; properly store supplies after the event.

• Properly adhere to safety regulations and procedures.

• Identify and report any hazards, issues or concerns in a timely manner.

• Accurately represent the Town of Windsor when engaging with the public.

• Support the mission and vision of Town of Windsor Parks, Recreation and Culture.

Commitment

• Attend training in its entirety prior to beginning service.

• Seasonal volunteer work, mostly taking place between May and September.

• Opportunities may include days, nights, weekends and holidays.

• Opportunities may include Yappy Hour, Farmers Market, July 4th, Cruise in Car Show.

• Volunteer for at least 3 community events annually.

• Work independently in a large event setting while interacting tactfully and effectively with the public.

• Must be able to read, interpret and apply operating policies and procedures.

• Tolerate and perform job duties under reasonably necessary stress.

• Maintain composure during mentally, physically and emotionally stressful situations.

• Must be able to communicate professionally, clearly and effectively with people inside and outside the organization using verbal and written methods.

Nature of Work

The history of Windsor’s people, businesses and events is preserved by the Town of Windsor Museums through objects, archives and photographs. Help the Museum Curator with artifact processing at the collections preservation facility.

• Most of the time is spent indoors in the collections storage area with a controlled climate.

• Activities include, but are not limited to: Sitting, walking, lifting, bending and standing.

Essential Job Functions

• Catalogue artifacts by adding permanent accessions numbers.

• Lightly clean, photograph and scan artifacts.

• Write detailed descriptions of artifacts and take measurements.

• Prepare artifacts for storage or exhibition.

• Perform data entry using Excel and PastPerfect software.

• Support the mission and vision of Town of Windsor Parks, Recreation and Culture.

Commitment

• Commit to serving for the duration of a seasonal session. February-April, May-June, August-October, November-January

• Attend an orientation and meet & greet at the beginning of your volunteer session. First Saturday of session, 10 a.m.-11:30 a.m. (Feb. 4, May 6, Aug. 5, Nov. 4)

• Volunteer at least 2 hours each month through a seasonal session. Your commitment ensures that you are prepared for the position and allows us to offer consistent and reliable programming to our community members.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Experience in museum work is considered an asset but is not mandatory.

• Willingness to learn, teamwork, and passion for history are vital.

• Volunteers must be able to follow instructions carefully, pay close attention to details and have basic computer knowledge in order to use collections software.

The Windsor History Museum Education Gardens provide handson learning opportunities camps, programs and events. Help the Museums staff educate visitors about native species and gardens of the past by developing and caring for the gardens.

• Museum Education Gardens volunteer positions require outdoor work and a moderate degree of mobility.

• Work will involve standing, walking, lifting, bending and carrying/using basic gardening tools.

• Must be able to stand and move outdoors over uneven surfaces.

• Must be able to tolerate various weather conditions within reason.

Essential Job Functions

• Assist with early season garden preparation and planting.

• Assist with daily watering of garden (daily commitment not necessary).

• Care for garden throughout season including weeding, pruning, pest control, harvesting and other garden tasks.

• Engage with the public in a positive and respectful manner.

• Engage the community in nature and history education through conversations and optional education programming (training provided).

• Support the mission and vision of the Town of Windsor Parks, Recreation and Culture.

Commitment

• Attend orientation and training on a flexible date in early-mid May.

• Commit to serving for the duration of the garden season (May-October).

• Volunteer at least 1-2 times per week. Shifts are typically 30 minutes to 1 hour.

• Optional opportunities to lead and assist with weekend garden education programming.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Must have prior experience and knowledge maintaining a vegetable or flower garden.

• Volunteers must be able to work independently, follow instructions and operate basic garden equipment without assistance (e.g. hoses, shovels, pruners).

• Prior experience gardening in Northern Colorado and knowledge of native plants is considered an asset but not required.

• A passion for creating space for children and families to learn about nature and public engagement skills are preferred.

Nature of Work

The Friendly Fork Café provides nutritious lunches at a low price to older adults in our community. Work as a team to prepare and deliver meals at the Community Recreation Center. The program is sponsored by the Weld County Area Agency on Aging.

• Senior Lunch positions require indoor kitchen work and a moderate degree of mobility.

• Work will involve standing, walking, scooping and pushing carts.

• Must be able to stand and move indoors and outdoors for an hour at a time.

• Must be able to use kitchen equipment such as spatulas, scoops and ladles.

Essential Job Functions

• Engage with staff and the community in a positive and respectful manner.

• Work as a team with Town staff and other volunteers.

• Maintain good personal hygiene while volunteering.

• Maintain health and safety standards according to Weld County Area Agency on Aging regulations.

• Appropriately portion meal servings using the tools provided.

• Accurately represent the Town of Windsor when engaging with the public.

• Support the mission and vision of Town of Windsor Parks, Recreation and Culture.

Commitment

• Attend periodic health and safety training.

• Volunteer at least twice a month as often as circumstances allow. Volunteer service is the most impactful when contributed regularly. We recommend volunteering for this position on a weekly basis.

• Arrive on time to volunteer shifts with a positive attitude.

• Sign up for shifts at least 24 hours in advance to allow for staff preparation. Your commitment ensures that you are prepared for the position and allows us to offer consistent and reliable service to our community members.

• Must be able to stand and move for one hour at a time.

• Excellent customer service skills and ability to work as a team.

• Attention to detail and ability to perform a repetitive motion.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays, the Community Recreation Center large gym is dedicated for a few hours as a safe environment where parents and toddlers can socialize and play. Help staff by laying out and cleaning equipment and putting everything away.

• Commit to serving for the duration of a seasonal session, with breaks as needed for vacations/holidays/etc.

September-December; January-May

• Attend a meet and greet and orientation at the beginning of your volunteer session.

• Volunteer once a week. Shifts are on Tuesdays and Thursdays 11:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Your commitment ensures that you are prepared for the position and allows our staff to plan efficient volunteer workdays.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Ability to bend, stoop, list and walk as necessary to pick up items in the gym.

• Volunteers must be able to follow instructions carefully, pay close attention to details and work positively as a member of a team.

Treasure Island Demonstration Garden displays plants that grow well in the local climate and cultivates tons of fresh produce to donate to the food bank. Gardeners of all skill levels are invited to learn and grow with this dedicated team of volunteers.

• Volunteer Gardener positions require outdoor work and a moderate degree of mobility.

• Work will involve standing, walking over uneven surfaces, kneeling, bending, digging and carrying/using tools. Work will take place outdoors and involve interacting with others.

• Must be able to tolerate various weather conditions within reason.

Essential Job Functions

• General gardening tasks include but are not limited to weeding, pruning, planting, harvesting, digging, labeling, amending, etc.

• Work with plant material, soil and tools on a regular basis.

• Use tools including shovels, rakes, hoes, pruners, loppers, etc.

• Work independently and in groups of other volunteers.

• Adhere to proper safety protocols and procedures, especially when using tools.

• Collaborate with fellow gardeners and staff to maintain the garden space.

• Engage with the public in a positive and respectful manner.

• Accurately represent the Town of Windsor.

Nature of Work

Volunteer Leaders help town staff lead groups of volunteers on outdoor workdays. Leaders will improve their leadership skills and provide valuable support to Windsor’s outdoor spaces. Requires one-year commitment and semi-skilled work.

• Engage with the public in a positive and respectful manner.

• Accurately represent the Town of Windsor.

Commitment

• Attend Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado training in its entirety (one Saturday, plus selfguided online components).

• Volunteer as a leader for at least two Windsor Volunteer Experience events per year.

• Optional opportunities to assist with additional nature programming.

• Optional opportunities to lead with Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado. Your commitment ensures that you are prepared for the position and allows us to offer consistent and reliable programming to our community members.

• Excellent customer service, public speaking and public engagement skills.

• Past group leadership/outdoor stewardship experience is preferred but not required.

Nature of Work

Help Water Conservation staff educate the public on how to conserve water. Volunteers will help at public events like Farmer’s Markets, community events and other opportunities with setting up and tearing down tables and engaging visitors.

• Time is equally spent indoors and outdoors setting up, attending and tearing down an information table at public events. Activities include, but are not limited to, sitting, walking, lifting, bending, carrying and standing.

• Must be able to tolerate crowds and engage with the public for several hours at a time.

Essential Job Functions

• Engage with staff and the community in a positive and respectful manner.

• Set up event supplies, such as tables, chairs, tents and promotional materials as needed.

• Assist Water Efficiency staff with the setup and tear down of the information table.

• Assist the public with signing up for irrigation and/or indoor water audits, explain the processes for each and be able to field questions.

• The right candidate will eventually take over all table duties at public events, including independent setup, tear down and storing of the materials in a designated space.

• Accurately represent the Town of Windsor when engaging with the public.

• Support the mission and vision of Town of Windsor Parks, Recreation and Culture.

Commitment

• Commit to serving for the duration of a seasonal session (June-October).

• Attend a meet and greet and orientation at the beginning of your volunteer session: First Saturday of the session, 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. (Feb. 4, May 6)

• Service will often take place on weekends and major public events.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Work independently in an event setting while interacting positively with the public.

• Ability to learn and relay important information about the water efficiency program.

• Any experience in water conservation or a willingness to learn.

• Ability to follow instructions carefully and pay close attention to details.

• Must have the basic computer knowledge required to use scheduling software.

Coaches encourage good sportsmanship and an understanding of sports rules and skills. Coaches promote a healthy and positive environment for all players. Youth can learn about teamwork in a fun and exciting environment.
