AFTERTHE CapitolTheatreopenedin downtownChathamin1929,itwasthe happeningplacetobe.Themoviehouse’s ornateArtDecowalls,plushseatsandsilver screentransportedticketholdersbeyond theglobaltroublescausedbythestockmarketcrashthatsameyear.

Talkiesweretakingoversilentmovies, althoughtheatregoerswerefascinatedby Paramount’ssilentfilm,Wings,starring ClaraBow,whichwonOutstanding/Best PictureattheveryfirstAcademyAwards ceremony,hostedinHollywoodin1929.

Itwasheadystuff,providingtownsfolkwithentertainmentandculturefora quarter.

Today,theCapitolTheatreisamovie houseandmuch,muchmore.Operatedby St.ClairCollegesince2012,therecreated theatreisthesceneforuniquecouples’weddings,thestageforfilmfestivalsanddance competitions,thesetforindependentfilm makersandonceagain,theplacetobefor anightatthemovies.

ThattheCapitolisstillstandingisatributeto localpeople’saffectionfortheiroldtheatre.Long operatedbyFamousPlayers,themoviehouse pleasedaudiencesfordecades.Whenawallwasinstalledtopartitionthelargeviewingspacein1972, moviegoerscouldthenchoosebetweentwofilms playingconcurrently.

Theagingtheatre’sdoorsclosedin1993.The CityofChathamsoondeemedtherealestate wouldbetterserveasaparkinglotandslatedthe buildingfordemolition.ResidentKevinMcMillan ralliedagroupofcitizenswhosharedhisdeterminationtosavetheCapitol.Together,theyformed theChathamCapitolTheatreAssociationin1994.

IfthistalewasbeingtoldinanoldHollywood movie,JudyGarlandandMickeyRooneywould haveburstontothebatteredstageandputona show,raisingenoughcashtosavethetown’s belovedmoviehouse.Theclosingscenewouldhave zoomedinonbeamingfaces,munchingonpopcornastheywatchedMGM’slionroar.

However,sincethiswasatruelifestorywithreal lifechallenges,theChathamCapitolTheatreAssociationmembersrolleduptheirsleevesandfrom 1995to2010,navigatedthebuildingthrough long,costly,ambitiousrestoration.

Inrose,ivoryandgold,thewholeauditoriumnowexudesasoftglow.Thegilded ArtDecomouldingframingthestageand adorningthewallsandceilingisaparticulartriumphintherestoration.

TheambiancecontinuesintheRotary Loungeonthelowerlevel,whereupto250 guestscanwineanddineatpublicand privatefunctions.TheintimateUnigasco Loungeaccommodatesasmanyas75 guestsinthemarquetry-accentedroom withahandsomebarandabirds’eyeview ofdowntownChatham.Therearealsotwo outdoorpatios.

Tohelpfinancetheextensiverebuild, supporterspaid$500apiecefor900commemorativetheatreseatsand$200each formorethan40granitestonesforming thepavementoutsideoftheCapitol.

InSeptember,2010,therestorationassociationopenedtheCapitolTheatreto appreciativeapplause.Theyranthetheatre withvaryingsuccessuntilanofferfromSt. ClairCollegeconvincedthemtoturnover thekeysonMarch1st,2012.“We’vebeen goinggangbusterseversince,”saysLesley Grand,thegeneralmanageroftheSt.Clair CollegeCapitolTheatre.

“It’sabusydowntowntostartwith,”Lesleyfinds.“St.ClairCollegeisrootedinthe communityandwantedtocontributetoits development,especiallyinthedowntown core.Peopleareusingthedowntownmore asapublicplacetogather.It’sexcitingto bepartofthat.”

TheWindsoriteswerestunned.Althoughtheyhadwatchedtheshow,thecouplehad notconsideredpittingtheirdoughnutmakingskillsagainstotherrestaurantownersand cooks.

“Letmethinkaboutit,”Pattytoldtheproducer. Sheaskedherdinercooksiftheywouldjoinher andwasturneddownbythecamerashyfolks.“If anyoneisgoingtopullthisoff,it’sDeb,”Patty realized.Shecalledhersister,chefandrestaurateur DebDelaurier,whowasupforthechallenge. “Debbiekeptsayingit’sforourbucketlist.Isaid I’mtooyoungforabucketlist!”

Ultimately,Pattydecided,“Iwantedtoprovethat wecoulddogreatdoughnuts,notjustcookgreat dinerfood.”Shefollowedtheproducer’sinstr uctions,submittingaformalapplicationandavideo, whichcanbeviewedatroute42diner.com.Since thedinerhasafun1950stheme,DebandPatty paidhomagetoLucyandEthelonthechocolate wrappingline,substitutingdoughnuts.Goofing around,“IburnedDeb’sheadwithadoughnut. Oops!”Pattysays.

Shegottheofficialthumbsupabouttwoweeks beforetheshootinFebruary,2014.Despitethe shortnotice,Pattyinformedtheproducer,“Absolutely,wecandoit!”

Thefirstroundfeaturedamysteryingredient,whichturnedouttobebarbecued spareribs.

Knowingtheywouldbejudgedonoriginality,presentationandtaste,theWindsor teamdecidedtocreateberrypulledpork doughnutswithaGrandMarnierreduction toppedwithcucumberslaw.Theyhad45 minutes.

Itwasgameon.

Seasonedinthepressuresofcookingfor hungryguests,thesistersfoundthecameras, microphonesandonslaug htofquestions aboutwhattheyweredoingwhiletryingto turnoutdoughnutsdaunting.Withthe judgeswatching10’away,Pattygotstage fright.“I’msoscaredIcan’tmove,”she whisperedtoDeb.

Thesisterslosttrackofingredients.“Did weputthebakingpowderinonceortwice?” apanickedPattyasked.Suchunderstandableconfusionwouldmakeorbreaktheir competitionentry.

ThesetupoftheTVkitchenandpantry didnotimpressDeb.Searchingforflour, sugarandotheringredients,“you’dberunningfromoneendofthekitchentothe other,”Pattyrecalls.Itateupprecioussecondsasthetimertickedonmercilessly.

Halfoftheblueberriesweremouldy; someofthedecentoneswereaccidentally droppedonthefloor.Substitutinganother variety,Debburnedthem.Shestartedagain withraspberries.Thedoughturnedout

watery.Aftershootingringsintohotoil, insteadofpoppinguplightandgolden,the doughnutssank.“Nomatterwhat,let’sjust makethem,”adeterminedDebsaidon camera.

Asbleepsintheeditedshowindicate,the Windsorteamfeltthepressure.“One minutewe’rehighfivingeachotherandthe nextminutewe’rescreamingateachother. That’ssisters,right?”Pattyobserves.

Debwasmostlyacalminginfluence. “We’redinergirls.Wecandoit,”sheencouragedPatty.

And theydid.“JudgeDavidlovedthe tasteofourdoughnut,”Pattysays.“Evenif itwasn’ttheprettiest.”Whiletwojudges disagreedoverthemeritsoftheicingsugar usedinthedoughnut,intheend,theNew YorkcompetitorwaseliminatedandPatty andDebadvancedtothefinalround.

Thistime,thedoughnutmakershadto producethreedifferentdoughnuts,allbuilt onaChinatowntheme.Plumsaucehadto appearinatleastoneofthem.Sinceboth yeastandcakedoughnutswererequ ired, therewastwohoursontheclock.

Thedinergirlsquicklyscribbledtheir intendedcreationsonthechalkboard: ChaiFrenchtoastyeastdoughnutwith Chantillycream;hoisinchocolatemacaroondoughnut;andeggrollwithspaghetti creamfilling.

Theambitiousmenuwentawryatthe start.WhenDebrealizedherpanwas smokingwithburningnuts,sheexclaimed, “I’veneverburnedsomanythingsinmy life!”

Onelotofdoughnutsdidnotcook properly.“Wehavetogetittogetheror we’renotgoingtowin,”Pattydeclared.The sistersmadeanewbatchthatturnedout beautifully.

Inthenickoftime,theyfinishedtheir traysofintriguingdoughnuts.“Thedough issoftandit’sverymoist.Definitelysome wildflavourshere,”declaredjudgeElizabeth.“Patty’sexemplifiedthekindof simplefoodthatdoughnutscanbe.”

JudgeDavidpronouncedthespicy hoisinchocolatesauce“amazing.”

Andheadds...“I’m anEnglishman.Ilovesoccer.”Heplayedthegameinhisnative Englandandhasalsobeenaqualifiedreferee.HearrivedinWindsor11yearsagoand immediatelybecameinvolvedinthecommunity.Paulismarriedandisthefatherofason anddaughter,whobothplaysoccer.Asapast-presidentandformerboardmemberof theSouthWindsorYouthSoccerClub,heco-ordinatedthesoccereventsforlastyear’s Children’sGamesinWindsorandwasthevenuemanagerforthe2014OntarioSummer GamesthispastJuly,alsointhecity.

HesaystheprocessforselectingICGathletesisfairlydirect:afterdecidingthesportsin whichtoparticipate,invitationsaresenttovariousschools,presidentsandvicepresidents ofsoccerclubstosendtheirbestathletesforaseriesoftryouts.Eventually,thefieldis narrowedtothefinalteams.

Oncethesquadshavebeenselected,localschoolboardsarecontactedandteam membersaretakentotheelementaryschools theyattended,wheretheypassontheir thoughtsandexperiencestoyoungerstudentscontemplatinganathleticfuture.“ThisInternationalChildren’sGamesroadshow,”saysPaul,”isdesignedtopromotesportsactivityandparticipationinformingkidsingradeschoolthatoneoftheirformerpupilshas beenpickedtoattendthegamesandthattheytoomightonedaybeabletocompeteon theworldstage.”

Thefirstchildren’sgameswereheldinJuneof1968withninetowns takingpart.They wereorganizedbyMetodKlemenc,aSloveniansportsinstructorwhosechildhoodhad sufferedfromtheSecondWorldWar.Hesays,“Itdestroyedmyfamily.SinceIwantedto createabetterworldbasedonfriendship,sportseemedtobeoneofthebestmeanstobring togetheryoungpeoplefromdifferentcountries.”

Inthelast46years,morethan35,000 schoolkidsbetweentheagesof12and15 haveparticipatedintheorganizedsports contests.Thegameshavehaddelegations from370townsfrom85countriesinEurope,Asia,NorthandSouthAmericaand Africa.

Windsororiginallyappliedtohostthe gamesin2011andwasawardedthemfor 2013.1,800athletesfrom54countries, theirfamiliesandfriendsconvergedonthe city.And,becauseofthis,wearenow invitedtosendathletestoallfuturegames, HollandnextyearandAustriatheyearafter.

Inadditiontothesoccerteamandits headcoachAngeloVerardi,Windsorisalso sendingan8-memberswimteamunder coachAndreiSemenovtoAustralia.The groupfliesoutofDetroitDecember4th withastopinLosAngeles,beforeheading toSydney.Thereturnisscheduled8days later.

Mealsandaccommodationsareprovided bythehostcity,whileflightsandother expensesaretheresp onsibilityoftheathletes.Moneyiscollectedthroughvarious fundraisers.Corporationsandindividuals can‘adoptanathlete’for$250,ortheycan spend$500andadopttheentireteam.A soccerbanquetwillbeheldNovember13th attheFogularFurlanclubcompletewitha bandandspeakersthatincludetheMayor ofWindsor,MikeHaveyathleticsdirector fromtheUniversityofWindsorandJoe BrailepresidentoftheEssexCountySoccer Association.Othermoneycomesfromthe old-fashionedmethodofraisingcash–by knockingondoors.“Theresponseisalways excellent,”accordingtoPaulScott.“People arepassionateaboutsportsandinWindsor, soccerhasaparticularlystrongimpact.If youlookatitlogically,weplaysoccerlocally,weplaysoccerregionally,weplaysoccernationallyandwe’veevenmadethe internationalscene.”Atthesametime,the gamehasbecomeincreasinglypopular.A decadeago,about5000kidswereinvolved insoccer,whiletodaythenumberhas swelledtomorethan9,000,thankstothe dedicationandeffortsofpeoplelikePaul Scottwhoareabletoshowkidstheimportanceofgettingawayfromvideogamesand othersedentaryactivitiesandheadoutdoors togetthebloodflowing.

For25years,BioPedhasbeencaringfor patientsattheclinicat1801WalkerRd., Windsor.OwnerandmanagerFrankalso overseesSarniaandChathamclinicsthat hehelpedestablishnearly10yearsago.

HerfirstappreciationoftherealstruggleshidinginWindsorEssexCountycamethrough volunteeringwiththeYMCA.Sarawitnessedfivesiblingssharingasinglesliceofbread duringlunchtimeatasummerprogram.“Theynevercomplainedandtheytookcareof oneanotherbeforethemselves,”sherecalls.Nextday,Sara’sfamilydonatedlunchforthe children.

Indeterminingherownpath,Meghan says,“Ilistenverystronglytomygutand whenIhaveagoodfeeling-orequallybad feeling-Ilistentoitandgowithit!”She adds,“Similarly,everyonceinawhile,you havetostepoutofyourcomfortzoneand takearisk.Itmaynotpayoffimmediately, butsomewheredownthelineyouwillrealizethelessonyoulearnedfromtakingthat risk.Everythinghappensforareasoneven ifitisn’talwaysobviousatfirst!”

WHENYOURTASTESARE blackandwhite,it’stoughtoburst intootherhues.SuchwasthechallengefacingoneRussellWoods homeownerwhoadoresclassicblack.Whensheandherhusband builtthehouse16yearsago,shesplashedthespaceinhergoto colour.Earlierthisyear,though,shedecideditwastimefora change.Somethingbrighterandlighter,evenifawall needed knockeddowntoachieveit.

Foryears,thesunroomhadservedasamusicroomwherethe couple’sthreedaughterspracticedpiano.Nowthefamilywantedto openthingsup.Aconstructionexpertassuredthemthesunroom wallwasnotloadbearing.Aftertradesp eopleremovedtheobstruction,thehomeownerswerethrilledtoseethesunlightpourin.

Thewifeadds,“Nowthepianoisout whereeveryonecanappreciateit.”

Throughoutthemainlevel,theoldflooringwastornoutandreplacedwithnew roughcut,handscrapeddarkwalnutflooring.Theformalstaircase’soriginalpickled oakwastreatedtofreshlypaintedcreamrisersanddarkwalnuttreads.

Withther ubbleandnoiseoftheconstructionprojectwrappedupintimefor summer,thefamilywasabletoenjoytheir coveredbackporch,poolandboatwell, equippedwithliftsfortwoboats.Itwasthe lot’sproximitytothecanalandLakeSt. Clairthatfirstinformedthecoupletheyhad foundhome.Bothavidboaters,theylooked forwardtoeveningsandweekends.“Itdidn’tmatterwhenmyhusbandgothomefrom work,wecouldjumpintheboatandgo,” saysthewife.Thefunpastimeconti nues withtheirdaughters,nowages7,14and17.

Thefamilyhadhopedthatreconfiguring theirhouse’smainfloorwouldenablethem tobemoreinteractive,yearround.Their hunchwasright.“We’vehadmanyparties sincetherenovation.Itflowsverywell,”the homeownersays.

ThesonofLebaneseparents,SamirwasborninAbuDhabion September10th,1980.Hehas4sistersandtwobrothersandwas10 yearsoldwhenthefamilymovedtoCanada.Heenjoysplayingtennisandbecameinterestedinboxingattheageof13atatimewhen heweighedamere112pounds...afeatherweightinpugilisticterms. HeattendedbothWalkervilleCollegiateandCatholicCentralHigh inthecity.Initially,hewasinterestedinkaratewhichhetriedfor

aboutadaybeforeaneighboursuggestedhemightenjoyboxing andinvitedhimtocometothegym.“Iimmediatelyfellinlove withboxinganddiditforabouttwoyears,beforehangingupmy glovesattheageof15,”herecalls.Hestayedawayfromthefight gameforabout14years.

Recallinghowhislatefather,AdnanEl-Mais,hadinspiredhim duringhisteenagefightingyearshecameoutofretirementat29, trainedextensivelyforaboutamonth,andwonthegoldmedalat aprovincialcompetitioninWindsor.Hethenfinished5thatthe 2010CommonwealthgamesinNewDelhi,afterbeingchosenfor theCanadianteam.Hesaystheatmosphereatthearenawas“just tremendous”–morethan10,000fanswere there,justbreathingin thesport.Thatsameyear,“SweetSammy”ashe’saffectionately known,wontheCanadianheavyweightboxingchampionshipin Halifax.ThispastAugusthetriumphantlyreturnedhomewith Canada’sfirstboxinggoldmedalinadozenyears,winningthe men’sheavyweightdivisionattheCommonwealthGamesinGlasgowScotlandinasplitdecisionoverDavidLightofNewZealand. “Itwasawesome,”hesays,“winningthemedalforCanadaand hearingthenationalanthem–anexperiencelikenoother.”

Providingconfidential,non-judgmentalservicesatnochargeto peoplefrom12to24yearsofage,WECHCevolvedoutofthe TeenHealthCentreandSandwichCommunityHealthCentre, whichamalgamatedin2009.Theorganizationhasformedrelationshipswithempoweringpartners,includingRBC.

The2014partnershipbetweenRBCandWECHCresultedin thecreationtheRBCKidsAllianceBursaries.Themembersofthe KidsAllianceYouthCouncilsareencouragedtocreatestories, poems,videosorartworkrevealingtheirvisionsfortheirneighbourhoods.Onepersonfromeachcouncilisselectedtoreceivea $500bursaryforpost-secondaryeducation,awardedbyRBC.The bankalsocontactswinnerstohelpthemlearnaboutsmartmoney management.

Forthepast15years,WECHChasofferedtreatment tohelp youngpeopleovercomeeatingdisorders.“Earlyon,RBCsteppedup withfundingtohelptheadultslearnhowtore-feedandemotionallysupporttheirkids,”Shelbysays.

Today,aspeciallytrainedteamofregistereddieticians,social workers,nursepractitionersandphysiciansprovideindividual, groupandfamilytherapyandcounselling;dietitiansupport;and specializedmedicalcare.Whenclientsreachtheageof25,theytransitionintothecareoftheBulimiaAnorexiaNervosaAssociation.

“Eatingdisorderscanbelife-threatening,”Shelbysays.“Thisyear, asaresultofourpartnershipwithBANA,welaunchedourtollfree eatingdisordersnumber,1-855-969-5530.”

Booth,36,creditshisgradeninehigh schoolteacheratGeneralAmherst,Keith Harrick,withallowinghimtofollowhis passionforfilm-making.

“HewasmyRobinWilliamsfrom‘Dead PoetsSociety’.Hesawpotentialinmeandit wasthefirsttimethatIbelievedinmyself,” statesBooth.

Aftergraduatingfromhighschool,Booth startedhisownbusinessproducingcorporatevideosanddesigningwebsites.However,thebusinessdidnotallowhimthetime topursuehistruepassion.Ultimatelyhe closedthebusinessandimmersedhimself infilm.

LikeBooth,Carrieredidnotattendfilm school.Hegothisfirsttasteoftheindustry bybeingadriveronthesetofthefilm, “SilentButDeadly”thatwasshotin Chathamin2008.Fromtherehebecame anassociateproducer,executiveproducer andfinallyaproducerowningtherightsto thefilm.

“Myphilosophyisthatlifeisshortand youcanneverfailaslongasyoukeep trying.”

Since2008Carrierehasproducedafew featurefilmswiththelikesofWilliamSadler (ShawshankRedemption,GreenMile,Iron Man3),JasonMewes(JayandSilentBob) andPaulSorvino(Goodfellas).Hemet Boothatatimeinhislifewhenthrowingin thetowelseemedtobethequickestandeasiestthingtodo.

“Wehadcoffeeonedayandsharedhorror storiesonourliveswiththevariousproblemswewereencounteringinourfilm makingcareers.Therewasatrustandbond formedrightthereinthecoffeeshopthat day.Wejustclickedknowingthatifwe wouldevermakeamovietogetherthatwe wouldhaveeachother'sbacks.”

Theyworkedtogetherforthefirsttime onashortfilmin2013called“ToHell WithLove".Soonaftertheyformedaproductioncompanycalled"ANamedViking" (ananagramforGavinandMike).

Theideafor“TheScarehouse”came aboutafterBoothtouredthereal“scarehouse”indowntownWindsordesignedby ShawnLippert.Afterwalkingthroughthe houseBooth’screativejuicesstartedflowing andhesetaboutwritingthescriptwithhis wifeSarah.

“Ireallywantedtodoafilmthatfocused onbullyingandsocialrejection.With Sarah’shelp,Ithinkthatwereallycaptured thisinthefilm.”

Likemanyfilmmakers,BoothandCarrierefoundthattheirbiggestchallengeswere timeandmoney.“TheScarehouse”wasshot inonly23days.Withabudgetofonly $250,000everyminutewascrucial.

“Wetriedtokeepeverythinglocal,”states Booth.“Withtheexceptionoftheleadactorsandsomecrew,everyoneelseinvolved waslocal.”Fortunately,Booth’swifeisanactressandwasabletoassistwiththecasting.

Thisalsoincludedtwolocalmake-up artists,CarlyNicodemoandTaylorVigneux,whoprovidedthespecialeffectsthat areonfulldisplayinseveralofthegrisly,unsettlingscenes.

“Inordertocreatethesenseofhorrorthat wewanted,thespecialeffectsneededtobe inventive,andimaginative.Youneedtocreatecertainillusionswithhorrormoviesthat

comewiththerightmusicetc.Specialeffectsstopbeingspecialiftheyareoverused,” statesBooth.

BothBoothandCarriereagreethat Windsorisagreatplacetomakeafilm. TheyarebothhugeWindsoradvocates.

JH: Allthetime,notthatweintendeditto happen.Oneoftheprofoundthingsabout MythBustersisthatwearejustfollowing ourcuriositiesandhavenoparticulartraininginscience.Whatthatsaysisthatscience isnotjustforscientists,itisforanyonewho wantstodoagoodjobofansweringquestionsandsatisfyingtheircuriosity.Butif youaskeduswhatwearehappiestabout thathashappenedbecauseoftheshow,we wouldtellyouisthefactthatithasencouragedyoungpeopletobeinterestedinthe sciences.

WL: LivingintheInformationAge,people areprettysophisticated.Evenlittlekids don’tfallformuchthesedays.Whatisyour theoryonhowarumourmorphsintoa myththatpeoplebelieve,twistorembellish andpasson?

JH: Well,usuallyitstartswithagrainof truth,andthengetstwistedintheretelling. Withoutthegrainoftruth,itisamuch hardersell.Butwhenthetruthandfantasy aremixed,itbecomesmuchmorebelievable andhardertoseparatewherethefallacieslie.

WL: Whatisonemyththatsurprisedyou whenyouprovedittobebogus/true?

JH: Thesearethehardestquestionsforus toanswer,asafterover250episodesfullof mythswehavetroubletokeeptrackofwhat wehavedone.Andwearemoreinvolved withtheprocess-itisnotlikewehaveany horsesintheraceofwhatistrueandwhat isn’t.Wejustshowwhatthetestsshowand arenotreallythatsurprisedattheoutcomes.

Doctorsusemammograms,alowdosex-ray,totakephotographsofwomen’sbreastanddetectabnormalities.Itis animportantscreeningtoolforearlydetection.However, mammogramsmaynotfindcancerincertainbreasttypes.For example,womenwithdensebreastshavemoreconnective tissuethanfat.Thisappearsonthemammogramasthesame colourascancer.Basically,theconnectivetissuehidesthe cancerouscells.

HenryWilliamGrant‘Harry’Fairley,whopassedaway in2012,wasawell-knowncitypoliceofficerandlatera securityemployeeatHiramWalker.Hiswife,LoisAnn Fairley,aTorontonative,whopre-deceasedhimin2007was anurseatGraceHospital,patientcareadvocateanda foundingmemberoftheOntarioNursesAssociationin 1973.Afterherdeath,theWindsor-Essexchapterofthe RegisteredNurses’AssociationofOntario,establishedthe LoisA.FairleyNurseoftheYearCommunityServiceAward inherhonor.It’sgiventolocalnursesinrecognitionfortheir careandcompassiontopatientsandcontributionstothe nursingfield.

TheFairleyswereparentstothreesons,theyoungest beingJohnwhoistheVicePresidentatSt.ClairCollege, themiddlesonBrian,anexecutiveatImperialOilandthe oldest,Grant,amulti-talented,affablegeniuswhoisthe subjectofthisstory.

BorninWindsor,heattendedGlenwoodandCentral Elementaryschools,completedhighschoolattheformer CentennialandthenwenttoChicagowherehestudied EducationandTheologyatWheatonCollege,arelatively smallliberalartsinstitution.Aftergraduatingin1981,he spentthenext25yearsinTorontowherehemethiswife Cari.TheyreturnedtoWindsorinordertospendmoretime withhisagingparents.

TarekJafarandJustinTessier,both25,startedtheirbandabout fouryearsagoandhavebeenbuildingasolidfanbaseeversince. TarekwasborninSarnia.HisfamilymovedtoWindsorwhenhe aboutsixyearsoldsoashesays“themostcriticalpartofmylifewas spentinWindsor.”HewenttoSte.Anne’sHighSchoolinTecumsehandgraduatedfromtheUniversityofWindsorwithadegreein BiologicalSciences.He’sanexercisetherapistbytradeandanaccomplishedmusicianatthesametime.Hisfirstmusicalexperience wasattheageof8whenhismotherbeganteachinghimpiano.By thetimeheturned12andwasabouttobecomeateenager,“the rebelinsidemecameoutandallIreallywantedtodowasplaythe electricguitar.”Hetookafewprivatelessonswhichhereallydidn’t carefor,sohepracticedonhisown...learninghisownspeciallicks. Hedidn'trefertohimselfasaverytechnicalguitarplayer,andcreatedsimple,catchyriffsthathithardandsoundedgreat.Hekept prettymuchtohimselfandavoidedthespotlight.Hestayedaway fromtalentshowsandotherpublicappearances,eventhoughhis musicalprowesswasbeginningtoshinethrough.Hebecamefamiliarwithmanymusicalgenreslikeblues,pop,rockandalternativesounds.Ontheothersideofthecoin,hisschool-mateandclose friendJustin,whoisagraduateoftheUniversityinPhilosophyand theHumanities,couldoftenbeseencentrestagelendinghisdrum beatsonnumerousoccasions.Today,theguysareateam:Tarek writesthemusic,andJustinisthedrivingforcebehindcreatingthe

percussion,whileaddinghisowntwisttowhatbecomesafinalized song.Describedasanabstractthinker,Justinworksinthetechindustry,travelingtoconferencesandexposaroundtheglobe.

Whilemusicwasamajorpartofhislifeduringhighschool,Tarek wasalsoasportsman.HewasamemberoftheSte.Anne’sfootball team,playedhockeyandhadaknackforvideogames.Hehastravelledextensivelywithhisfamily,havingvisitedAfrica,Europe,and partsofSouthAmerica.

Oneday,lateinhisuniversitytenure,Tarek,whohadalsodabbledinrecordingmusic,playedsomeofhismaterialforJustin,who immediatelysuggestedthetwogettogetheranddosomethingwith it.“So,westartedplayingtogetherandworkingonafewsongsand itdevelopedtothepointwherewehad6or7songsthatactually soundedgood.”Theyplayedafewshowsamidapositiveresponse.

Thesoundthattwosingers,oneguitarandadrumkitcanachieve isamazing.Tareksaysittooksometimeforhimtogettheright combinationofamplifiersandpedalstoproducehissignature booming,fullsound,whileJustin“playslouddrums”.Theend resultisasynergisticbig-volumetonethateasilyfillsanyvenue.The musicisbestdescribedasbeing‘indie-blues-rock’andattractsawide audience.Peoplefromtheirearlyteenstomusicloversintheir50s and60senjoywhatthey’rehearing.Onstage,TarekandJustin insiston‘lookingclassy’....normallywearingslacksandblazersor suits....“noT-shirtsandrippedjeans,”saysTarek....“weliketolook puttogetherandjustrockoutashardaswecan,whilelooking good!”TheBlueStones’firstgighappenedafteramessagethey

TheirfirstCD,a6-trackEPtitled“The BlueStonesEP”featuresalloriginaltunes writtenandarrangedbyTarekandJustin. Thediscisbeingphasedoutbutallthe tunesarereadilyavailablethroughthe group’swebsitethebluestones.ca.

Oneofthetrackstitled‘RollingWiththe Punches’fromtheirsecondalbum“How’s ThatSound?”hasbeenusedonABC’s Canadian-producedcop-show‘RookieBlue’ andonUSANetwork’s‘Suits’.‘MakeYour Move’,anothertrackfromthedischasbeen usedonNBC’sParksandRec.Trackshave alsobeenfeaturedon‘NecessaryRoughness’ andwasthebackgroundforanEsquire Magazinephotoshootvideo.Someofthe musicisalsobeingfeaturedinanupcoming videoprojectfrom‘RootsCanada’.

Thelatestalbum,“BlackHoles”isbeing releasedataWindsorpartytowardtheend ofNovember.Onlypeopleattendingthe functionwillbeabletobuyacopy.Once theparty’sover,thetuneswon’tbeavailable...notevenonline....until2015.The exactdateandlocationhaven’tbeenfinalizedyetsobesuretokeeptrackofthe group’swebsiteforupdatedinformation.

BlueStonesfansshouldbeimpressed withtheneweffort,partofwhichwas recordedinTorontoandtheotherhalfat SoundFoundryStudiosinKingsville.Tarek saysthe8-tracksarea“littledarkerandalot moodier”thantheirpreviousefforts.“I’m reallylikingwhatIhear,”hesays.
