“Itisabittersweetfeeling,”saysRacovitissittinginhisofficewearinghisTBQchefuniformsurroundedbydecadesofmemorabiliafromtherestaurant.“Whenonedoorcloses, anotheroneopens.TheUniversityofWindsormadeusanofferthatwecouldnotrefuse, andthetimingfeltright.”
TheUniversityofWindsorpurchasedthepropertyfor$4million.Itwillbeusedasan ancillarybuildingforitsSchoolforArtsandCreativeInnovationthatisbeingbuiltinthe oldArmouries.
HarryandHelenRacovitisopenedthefirstrestaurantin1941.Thomandhissister ValerieStoiantsisgrewupatTBQsworkingthereaschildren.Theywerewipingtables, sweepingfloorsandlearningthefamilyworkethicbytheageofeleven.Thomthenstudiedbaking/foodchemistry,marketingandculinaryartsatOklahomaStateUniversityand becameaworld-classchefandlong-timechampionofWindsor’shospitalityrestaurant.

Racovitisregularlygavebacktothecommunityovertheyearsactingasaconsultant,participantanddonorofproductsand servicestomanyWindsor/Essexcharity events.HewasthevisionaryoftheAnnual ChefsdeCuisineGalasforover 15years, raisinghundredsofthousandsofdollarsfor localcharitiesandorganizations.
Althoughthenumberofvisitorsfrequentingtheoriginalsiteslowedoverthe years,Racovitissaysthattake-outhas steadilyincreased.
ReflectingonTBQ’slegacy,Racovitis saysthehighlightwasthefamilyinteraction.“Igrewupattherestaurantand watchedmanylong-timecustomersand familiesgrownup.Myownchildrengrew uphere.”

INNOVEMBER,1940, anEssexteenagerwalkedintoaWindsorrecruiting station.Seventy-fouryearslaterhishometownerectedaspectacularmonument thatwillbeaneverlastingtributetothemenandwomenoftheairforcewhofought anddiedinWorldWarII.
Withhisdashinggoodlooks,andanErrolFlynnstyle,JerryBillingcouldhave staredinmovies.
Instead,hechoseacareerthatdaredtostaredeathintheeyesandlivedhislife indefenceofothers.ThatiswhyEssexwillbethepermanenthomeofareplica Spitfirefighterairplaneandwhysomanypeopleinthistowngotonboardwitha veryworthwhileproject.
TheTownofEssexhasclearedthewayforthememorialbycreatingaspacenear it'ssilos,inthedowntowncorewhichwillbeknownas'SpitfirePark'.
OncethecraftspeopleatGBReplicasinNorwich,Englandheardaboutthis project,theyspedupthereproductionofthefull-scaleSpitfire.Itispaintedwith thesamecolorsandcallnumber, ML135,thatwasontheplaneBillingflewover thebeachesofNormandy.
Thejourneyofthereplicaplaneitselfisafascinatingone.Itwasdisassembledand putina40-footlongshippingcrateinNorwich.ThenitwastruckedtoLiverpool, Englandandfromthere,aneartwo-weekvoyageaboardaship.Onceitarrivedin Montreal,itwastruckedtoBramptonandthendeliveredtoEssexonAugust29th.
Assoonastheplanewasintown,acrewcameintocarefullytakeitoutofthe crateandplaceitgentlyintotheoldEssexMemorialArena.Ironically,theWWII airplanewastobetemporarilyhousedinabuildingconstructedbyveterans.
Whenitwasbeingunloaded,Jerry'ssonErik,whohasbeeninstrumentalingettingthisprojectgoing,openedsomeoftheboxesthatcontainedpartsoftheplane. HesaiditwasjustlikeChristmas.“IwishJerrywashere,”hesaid.
Insidethearena,hismother,Jerry'swifeKaren,satpatientlyoutofthehot summersun.Whenitwastimefortheplanetobeliftedoutofthecrate,shewas righttherewithtownofficialsandsupporters.
“He(Jerry)thoughtpeopledidn'tcareanymore,”shecalmlysaid.
ByearlySeptember,theSpitfirewasre-assembledinthearena,andfollowinga specialceremonyitwasmoveddownthemainstreetandtoitspermanenthome.
BobSwaddlingandMikeBealesharetheirloveforthe
enthusiasm.Thetwotookonthetaskofchairingthe committeethatbroughtthisremarkableprojecttolife.
ItwasSwaddlingwhotooktheinitiativeandapproachedtheEssexTownCounciltocreatesomesort oflastingmemoryofnotonlyJerryBillingbuttoall thosefromthisareawhoserved.ServingonJerry's crewwhenheflewCliffRobertson'sSpitfireinair shows,SwaddlinghasbeenafanoftheWWIIfighter planesincehewasayoungster.
“IhadtodoaspeechinschoolwhenIwasfive andIdiditonairplanes.Mydad (whoflewaLancasterbomber)saidtheSpitfirewasthebestplanein WorldWarII.Youalwaysbelievedyourdad,”said Swaddling.
SwaddlingstudiedtheSpitfireandwassoonintroducedtoBillingoutathisgrassairstripinEssex.
“IcouldtalkSpitfireswithhimbecauseIreadso muchaboutthemandafterthatIwashooked.They weremadetobesimple.Theonlycomplicatedthing abouttheSpitfireisthewing.”
Thedesignofoneofthemostfamousandinvaluablefighterplanesinthewarmighthavebeenmodestbutittookcourageandskilltogetittodowhatit wasdesignedfor.

“Thisonewillbededicatedtotheonesin thecountywhoserved.Thisteamofcitizens aresomeofthefinestpeopleyouwould meet,”saidBealeofthecommitteewhich includedJerry'swifeKarenandsonErik.
Onceananonymousdonorfromthe Ottawaarea,whoisaSpitfireenthusiast himself,startedtheprojectwitha$25,000 donation,thecontributionsandsupport wereoverwhelming.Thecompanythat builtthereplica,GBReplicasofNorwich, England,pickedupthecosttopaintand shiptheplane.UniforandtheEssexBIA werealsobigfinancialbackers.
“Thesuccesshasbeenmind-blowing.We aregettingdonationsfromtheNetherlands,”saidBeale.“Someonesaidveteran, someonesaidmemorial,someonesaidserviceandsomeonesaiditwasatoughproject,”saidBealeofhowhebecameinvolved.
Veteranandserviceareacouplewords thatdefineJerryBilling.Strongofcharacter,heneverbackeddownfromafight.He wasshotdownthreetimesbutkeptgoing backformore.
Whetheritwasflyingsome250sorties (missions),survivingbyeatinggrassand theoddcabbageafterbeingshotdown overFrance,ordecadeslater,meetingafew adversariesofadifferentkind.
In2003,followingafour-hourhomeinspection,theDepartmentofVeteransAffairs toldhimandhisfamilyhewasreceivingtoo muchinbenefitsandsopaymentswere halted.
Anotherconflicteruptedin2008when GenworthWindTurbineswantedtoputup aturbinejust900metersfromtheendof hisgrassairstrip.
JerrystayedintheRoyalCanadianAir Force,flyingtwicefortheQueen,until hisretirementin1964andheflewhislast flightinaSpitfireata1994airshowwhen hewas73.
HeadvancedtotherankofFlightLieutenantandwasakeyplayerinthefamous BattleofMaltawhichstartedwithhim launchinghisplaneoffanaircraftcarrier.
Hisheroicsandaccomplishmentswere wellrecordedinhisbook'AKnaveAmong KnightsinTheirSpitfires'whichincludes hisbeinghonoredwiththeKnightofOrder ofMeritfromFranceandtheMaltaGeorge Cross.

Butthat’swhatsheis.At5foot4andweighingabout128pounds, thissoft-spokenyoungwomanmakesnobonesaboutthefactthat shelovesit!Herfightingweightis115poundsandshecompetesin thestrawweightcategory.
RandawasborninBaghdad.Shehasanoldersisterandtwo youngerbrothers.ThefamilymanagedtoescapefromtheirMiddle EasternhomeandmovedtoWindsorabout26yearsago,whenshe was3yearsold.Randacreditshermother,agrocerystoreemployee, forkeepingthefamilytogetherthroughtoughtimes.Herfather,a formerIraqisoldier,isestrangedfromtherestofthefamilyalthough theydokeepintouch.
AfterattendingSt.Alexander’sGradeSchool,sheadvancedtoSt. Joseph’sHighwhereshebecameinterestedinwrestling.Asamatter offact,shemetherfuturehusbandinhighschool,becamefriends andwrestledinthesameclub.Randahadintendedonfurthering herwrestlingeffortsatanout-of-townUniversity,butherparents wereagainstthemove,preferringthatshestayinthecity.Soshe
wenttocollegeandstudiedbecomingapharmacytechnician,at thesametimeinvolvingherselfinmixedmartialartsalongwith herboyfriend.WhenshesawhimfightatthePalaceofAuburn Hillsabout5or6yearsago,saysRanda,“that’swhenIdecided that’swhatIintendtodo.”Shetransitionedintojiu-jitsu,whichis similartowrestling,andafteracoupleofyearsasanamateurwith 7victoriesandoneloss,shemadeherprofessionaldebutinNovember2012.Herrecordstandsat4winsand1losswhichwasto JustineKishwhohadspentfiveyearsinaRussianorphanagebefore beingadoptedbyanAmericanfamily.
Thissummer,theWindsorfighterbecametheloneCanadianto makethe16womancastofseason20of“TheUltimateFighter” whichcanbeseenonFOXSportseveryWednesdayevening beginningSeptember10thandrunningtillDecemberforthe seasonfinale.Unfortunately,weareunabletoprintanyofthe resultsbecauseofTVconfidentialityagreements.Accordingto Randa,“ifweweretodivulgeanyinformationabouttheshow,we facea$5millionfine!”

whilethechampionshipisdeterminedin5 rounds.Combatantsareinaclosed-door cage...theywearonlyglovesandnoother protectivegear.Thefightingcanbebrutal andeverythingisreal,rightdowntothe arguments.AsRandaputsit:It’sacrazy,crazy show.Ipersonallyliketochargemyopponents,getthemtothegroundandusejiujitsuuntiltheysubmit.Youcanneverpredict what’sgoingtohappen.Someofthebest peoplegetknockedout...someoftheworst peoplewin.”Shedoesn’tliketotalktoher opponentsanddoesn’twanttobearound thembeforeafight.WhileinVegas,shelived, ateanddrankwithheropponentsfor6 weeks.“ItwasoneofthetoughestthingsI everhadtodoandI’llneverdoitagainno matterhowmuchtheypayme,”sheexplains. Inotherwords,thefightersaren’texactly friends...theanimosityamongthemisthe genuinearticle.
Sheis100%committedtofighting.“Not onlydoIhavea9-5job(she’sapharmacy technician atZiterPharmacy),butItrain earlyinthemorningbeforegoingtowork andthenI’lltrainatnightafterwork,usually until10or11atnight–atleast4or5hours everydayoftheweekbecausethere’ssomuch tolearn.”She’sinvolvedinanumberofdisciplinesincludingwrestling,jiu-jitsu,and kick-boxing.Sheadmitstobeingaworkaholicadding:“Ijustwanttogetbettersobad andIwanttoseehowfarIcantakeit.My opponents,mostofwhomdon’thaveanother job,workharderthanmesoI’mpushingmyselfmoreeveryday.”Mostofhertrainingis doneattheMaximumTrainingCentreon DougallAvenueandsherecentlyjoinedan organizationinMichigan.Despiteherrigorousschedule,herpersonallifeisonsolid ground.Hermarriageissolid.Herhusband, whodoesn’tfightanymoreisaninstallerfor awindowcompanyandstandsbehindhis competitivewife.“Heissimplywonderful andunderstandswhatit’sallabout,”shesays, “heknowsthisiseverythingformeandlets medowhatIwanttofulfillmydreams.”
Whenherfightingdaysareover,Randa Markoshopestosettledown,havekidsand raiseafamilywhileremaininginthefitness business.Shedreamsofopeningherown gym.“Iwanttohelpoutyoungkidswho’ve haditroughintheirlives.Iwouldliketogive themsomewheretogo....tobeafamilyto them.Iwantthemtohavethatoneplace wheretheycangotofeellikehome.”

Injust35veryactiveyears,theHospicehasgonefromasmallvolunteerorganization tendingtopalliativepatients’endoflifeneedsfromMetropolitanHospital’sformerNurses’ Residencetocreatingthefirstandlargestcommunity-based palliativehospicevillagein Canada.
Rev.CanonPaulChidwickledthelocalhospicemovementin1979.Today,hisvisionis carriedoutthroughtheleadershipofexecutivedirectorCarolDerbyshireanddirectorof communityengagementandadvancementFr.MatthewDurham.

Homebase,theHospiceVillage,isat6038EmpressSt.,Windsor.It grewoutoftheformerSt.VincentdePaulElementarySchool,whereHospicerelocatedin1991.Afterpurchasingthebuildinganditspropertyin1997andhiringtheHospice’sfirstfull-time palliativecarephysician,Dr.CharmaineJones,in1999,theorganization’svisionaries launchedanambitiousplan.

THESEGUYSMEANBUSINESS! Inthelate1990s,threeWindsorareahighschoolpalsdecidedtheywantedtolivetherockandroll lifestyle.Sotheyaddedafourthandstartedabandcalled‘Knematic’. Theyrockedandtheyrolled,winningseveralcompetitions,releasing asuccessfulindieCDandsharingthestagewiththelikesofFinger ElevenandEdwinandSerialJoe.However,thereweretensionsamong themembersandthegroupfolded.Theygotanewbassplayerand re-formed.Itworkedforawhile,butthereweremorehassles,andthe grouppackeditinagain.Therewaseventalkofgettingoutofmusic altogether.However,aftermuchconsideration,theguysdecidedthat musicwastoomuchfun,sotherewasanotherreconciliation,anew 4-piecebandwasputtogetherandnamedStaringAtTheSun.As Randyexplains:“afteraboutayearwedecidedtochangethename andwearrivedatAshesOfSoma....Somahavingtodowiththespirit andasheso fthemusicleftbehind,longafterthemusicianshave gone.”Thenewformulaclickedandoverthelastdecadeorso,the grouphasbeenmakinganimpressivemusicalsplash.

The38year-oldcitynativehasbeencharacterizedby criticsasan“absolutemasterofemotionalhorror,melancholy,passionandthedelicateartofdrawingonclassic pop-cultureandgenreformstocreatesomethinghighly complex,challengingandquitevisionary.”He’sagraduateoftheUniversityofWindsorandholdsdegreesin EnglishLiteratureand CreativeWriting,anotherinPsychologyandjustrecentlyhecompletedhisstudiesfora teachingdegree.Hedoesn’thaveafull-timejobinthetrue senseofthewordbuthefreelancesfortheWindsorStar
andmaintainsafreneticpaceinhisownwritings.ArecipientofgrantmoneyfromtheOntarioArtsCouncil, hehasjustfinishedashortfictioncollectionwhichhesays ismuchdifferentfromhispastmaterialandissettohave anovelpublished,whichis“99.9%completed.”
Alexsaysevenasayoungboyhewasabookworm, somethinghepickedupfromhistwoolderbrothers.“I’ve gotlotsofpicturesofme,veryyoung,holdingabookon mylapandpretendingtoread,”herecalls,“notreally knowinghowtoreadyet.Butthehabitsortofcontinued onasIgotolder.”Asisthecasewithmanyboys,hefirst gotinterestedincomicbooks,graduatingtopulpfiction andmanygenres,particularlyhorrorandthelikes,mostly

onthe‘darkside.’He’sanavidhockeyfan andinhisyoungeryearswasactiveinalot ofstreetandfloorhockey,buthenever playedthegameontheice.Nonetheless, booksandwritingwerehisfirstloves.
Hewasfirstpublishedin1999whilestill attendingUniversity.FrontandCentre Magazine,ajointCanadian-Irisheffort, boughtashortstorythatAlexhadwritten ayearearlierandhassincebeenreprinted twice–onceinhisfirstcollectionandsubsequentlyinanothe rmagazine.Alexsays thatstoryisveryclosetohisheartand“isa young-lovetakeontheApocalypse...two youngpeopledealingwiththeirimpending demise.”And,justbeforehisgraduation, thebuddingauthorsentouttonsofstuff tovariouseditorsandpublishersandtohis surprise,muchofitmadeitintoprint!One publisher,FourthHorsemanPress,wasparticularlyinterestedinAlex’sthoughtsonthe endoftheworldandfeaturedthreeof hisstoriesinseparateissuesofRevelation Magazine.Throughthisrelationship, dozensofothermanuscriptsbyAlexwere releasedbythecompany.In2005,Fourth Horsemanpublished‘BlackSunshine’, Alex’sfirststand-alonebookwhichcontainedacombinationofend-timestalesthe authorhadinitiallyenvisionedasbeingserializedin7or8issuesofthemagazine.In 2015,BlackSunshineisbeingre-issued inanexpanded10thanniversaryversion, moretotheauthor’ssatisfaction.Inthe meantime,theshorterversionisstillforsale inlimitedquantitiesfromAmazon.ca,orit canbeorderedfromIndigoorChapters.
About5yearsago,Alex’sfanswere treatedtoacollectionofshortstoriestitled ‘Experimentsat3BillionAM’,published bytheUK-basedEibonvalePress.“This cameabout,”saysAlex,“becauseIhada hugeamountoffictionthatIthought workedwelltogetherdramatically,honed itforacoupleofyearsandthensubmitted it.”It’saratherlargebookofmorethan600 pages,containing40storiesandsold aroundtheworldthroughAmazon.Itcan beorderedfromChapters,Indigo,Juniper Books,ColesandtheUniversityofWindsorBookstore.BarnesandNoblestores carryitthroughouttheUnitedStates.

Thecityhadgainedquiteareputationforitssupper clubs,themosticonicofthembeingTheElmwoodCasino andHotel,aDougallAvenuelandmarkattractingmanyof NorthAmerica’spremierentertainers.Iremembertalkingto JimmyDuranteonhis72ndbirthdaybackin1963andhis biggestrecollectionwas“howfasttheykilledmeoffinthe movieIt’sAMadMadMadMadWorld.”LouisArmstrong maderegularappearanceswithhisNewOrleansjazzstylings andJerryValecroonedtothedelightoftheaudience.Pop starsoftheeralikeConnieFrancis,TriniLopez,Bobby DarinandNeilDiamondgracedthestage,whileTVhost BillKennedyregularlyinterviewedElmwoodguestsonhis

AvacantrestaurantonChilvernearWyandotteeastwas rentedandthe homelessmenwereinitiallyfedsupper...thenbreakfast,whileAlcoholics Anonymousalumnitalkedwiththemenabouttheirproblems.
Theresponsewassolargethattheexistingquartersbecametoosmall,so theorganizationfoundanotherbuildingtorentinOldWalkervillewitha largedormandencouragedhomelessmentoleavetheirstreetcornersand alleysto“staywarmforthenight”.Muchtothechagrinofpeoplewholived intheneighborhood.According tothepriest“wehadtogodoor-to-door andexplainwhatwehopedtodo.Wewonthemover.”Localrestaurantsin WindsorsupportedtheworkofFr.Charbonneauandtheyprovidedfoodon aregularbasis.PlaceslikeKentuckyFriedChicken.EveryTuesdaytheElmwoodCasinowouldmakeshepherd’spietoservethemenatCharityhouse.
Ashisresponsibilitiesgrew,FatherCharbonneaucalledonhisfriends,the lateJimandKayRyan,theBrentwoodco-founderswhosoldtheirhomein Emeryvilleandmovedintothebuildingwhereupwardsof150werefedon adailybasis.TheRyansvirtuallyrantheoperationsinceFatherCharbonneau stillhadhisparishtolookafter.
WhenanOntariogovernmenttaskforcerecommendedthatWindsor wasamongcitiesthatshouldhavearecoveryhomebecauseofitshigh numberofdrinking-relatedcrimes,FatherCharbonneauwasaskedtorun theplaceandplanswerefinalizedtobuytheSt.JosephHouseofStudiesat 3020Sandwich Streetfor$150,000.Itwasre-namedBrentwood,arecovery homeformalealcoholicsonly,witha20to30bedcapacity.Thefollowing yearawomen’ssupportmeetingwasheld.Ayouthgroupfor9to18 year-oldswasorganizedin1977andin1983,ayouthgroupwasstartedfor kidsaged7to15.FatherPaulandotherBrentwoodpeoplewereinvitedby theCountySchoolBoardstogointoschoolsandtalktogrades7and8 studentsabouttheirexperienceswithalcoholanddrugs.And,asmore and morepeoplecametoBrentwoodforhelpitbecameobviousthatanother movewasnecessary.

ItjustsohappenedthattheoldElmwood, longclosedanddescribedasa“mess”wasup forsale.Brentwoodwasgiventhedeedby theownerswithaprovisionthatitdidn’t havetobepaidfortwoyears.Restorationof thestructurestookatleastayearatacostof $1.5millionandlotsofvolunteerhelp. WhenthenewfacilityopenedinJulyof 1984,150to175peoplecouldbeaccommodatedatanyonetimefora90dayprogram.PeoplefromacrossCanadacamefor theprogram–Chrysler,FordandGMsent employeeswhoneededhelpandthrough word-of-mouth,Brentwoodreceivedmuch positivepublicity.FatherCharbonneau workedatBrentwood’snewhomeuntilhis retirementasExecutiveDirectorin2005, continuinghisassociationuntilhisdeath,at age87,onMarch22nd,2010.
Overtheyears,thenon-denominational organizationhasservedmorethan25,000 menandwomen–mostlyfromWindsor andEssexCounty,althoughclientshave comefromallpartsofCanadaandthe UnitedStates.Brentwoodisstaffedby nearly50employees,includingcertified counsellorsandmedicalstaff.Anadolescent programisnowunderway,thankstothe generosityofUNIFORandDriveLogistics, alongwiththeco-operationofGreenShield andtheSistersofSt.Joseph.
Brentwooddoesreceivesomegovernment funding,butit’snotenoughtocoverallthe expenses,whichmeansthatfundraisingis necessary.Theannualhomelottery,nowin its23rdyear is,byfar,thebiggestmoney raiserandisthelongestrunningcharitable homelotteryinthecountry.Otherevents includecraftandbakesales,agolftournament,yardsale,walkathon,vehiclelottery, SuperBowlpartyandseasondances.
