INAFEWSHORTWEEKS, Mustangenthusiastseverywherewillmarkthe50th anniversaryoftheintroductionoftheFord MustangonApril17,1964.JustasHenry Ford’svisionwasanaffordablefamilyvehicle foreveryone,sotoowasthegoalofearly 1960’sproductplannersatFordalongwith thencompanypresidentLeeIacoccaandFord grandsonHenryFordII,toproduceanaffordablesportycartoprovidepeoplewitha waytohavefun.

Thespringintroductionin1964causedthe ne wlymintedMustangcognoscentitorefer totheseearlycarsas1964½models,butFord consideredandidentifiedthemallas1965 models.Basedontheunibodyplatformofthe yeomandutyFalcon,thecarwasasmashhit rightoutofthegate,andsoldoveronemillionunitsbeforethe1966modelyearhad cometoaclose.Thisplatformwasmassaged, stretchedandwidenedthroughthe1973 modelyearwiththequestionablylovedMustangIIappearingasthenextgenerationfrom

1974to 1978.Startingin1979thethirdgenerationofMustangbasedontheFord“Fox” platformsawusageforthemostnumberof modelyearslastinguntiltheendofthe1993 models.Thefourthgenerationcarappeared inthe1994modelyearandlastedthrough theendofMustangproductionatitsinauguralhomeofDearbornAssemblyinthe2004 modelyear.Startingin2005,thefifthgenerationofMustangwasproducedatAuto AllianceInternational,ajointventureassemblyplantwhereFordpartneredwithMazda (whileFordownedasmuchas30%ofthe company).Thiscontinueduntiljustlastyear whenMazdabowedoutofthecollaboration andFordrenamedthefacilityFlatRock (Michigan)Assembly.Startinglaterthisyear thesixthgenerationofMustangwillbebuilt atFlatRocknotonlyforCanadaandthe UnitedStates,butforalmostalloftheentire world.

So,howisthe2015Mustang?Surprisingly,whenviewedallbyitself,thefirstimpressionisthatthedesignisevolutionary fromtheoutgoing2014car,butwhena 2014anda2015areviewedsidebyside, thedifferencesarestriking.Thedesignis widerlowerandmoredynamicinappearance.MustangistheonlycarintheFord familythathasitsownuniqueplatform.It sharesnopartsorpieceswithothercarlines andasDavePericaktoldme“Italsohasno (bodyorsuspension)partsincommonwith theoutgoing2014model.”Theimproved dynamicappearancecomesfrom15mm widerfrontand70mmreartracks.Theroof isnow32mmclosertotheroadaswell. Thatappearanceisbackedupbydramaticallyimprovedhandlingasthe2015car marksthefirsttimeMustanghashadanindependentrearsuspension.“We’dtakenthe solidrearaxleaboutasfarasitwaspossible togo,”DavePericaktoldme“Andinterestinglyenough,whenweinstalledthenew rearsuspensionanddrivesystemintoatest

mule,wequicklydiscoveredthattherear suspensionwasnowsuchanimprovement thattheexistingfrontsuspensioncouldn’t keepup,sowehaveanentirelynewdouble balljointfrontsuspensiontoreallyimprove thehandlingofthecar.”Oneofthebenefits ofthenewsuspensionsetupsisitprovides roomforanequallyimpressiveimprovementinthebrakingdepartment.TheV6 andEcoBoostcarsgettwopistoncaliper brakesasstandard.Standardforthe5.0L carsandoptionalfortheEcoBoostarefour pistoncaliperbrakeswithsixpistonunits beingoptionalforthe5.0Lunits.

Togoalongwiththeimprovedhandling capabilitiesofthenewcar,therearenow threeenginechoices.Thestandardengine continuestobethe3.7LV6,ratedat300hp and270’/lbsoftorque.Forthosewhocan onlygetbywithaV8underthehood,a newlyrevisedversionofWindsor’sEssexEnginePlant5.0LV8isjusttheticket.For 2015theenginereceivesallnewcylinder he adsbuiltattheFordAnnexwhichimprovebreathingandperformancetolevels inexcessofthosefoundontheoutgoing car’sBoss302engine.Insidethesenew headsarerevisedhigherliftcamshaftsand tokeepthatforgedcrankshaftspinningall 5.0LenginesnowgettheBoss302style

connectingrods,alsosourcedfromtheFord Annex.Ratedat420hpand390’/lbsof torque,thisengineisthemechanicalequivalentoffinejewellery–lovelytolookat,but evenlovelierunder way.Andforthefolks wholiketheirMustangwithanextratouch ofhightech,a2.3LEcoBoostfourcylinder engineisoffered.Withthehelpofatwin scrollturbo,itproduces305hp(morethan thestandardV6)and300’/lbsoftorque. Thelittleenginethatcan,hasawide,flat torquecurvethat’sjustperfectforhustling throughtwistybackroadsorwhenyoujust wanttojustputyourfootinit,topasson thehighway.Nomatterwhatengineischosen,it’sbackedbyasix-speedtransmission. Eitherado-it-yourselfmanual,orafull automatic.

TheEvosConceptcarfrom2011providesourfirstrealcluesastothelookofthe newMustang.Atthefronttheexteriorof thecarhasaveryaggressivesharknose appearancereminiscentoftheoriginal’65–’66cars.Thewindshieldpillarsarelaidback toallowthepassengercabintobemoved rearwardwhichalsoallowstherooflineto flowintoagorgeousfastbackalsoharking backtothefirstgenerationcars.Because bothrearwheelshavebeenmovedoutboard by20mm,thequarterpanelsdisplaythe

verydefinedrearhaunches.Attherearthe notionoftheoriginalstyletri-bartaillamps ishonouredbutinaverycontemporary way.There’llbenoseeingtheselightsat nightandconfusingthemforanyothercar.

InsideMustangpreservesallofthedesign cuesthathavemadeitfamous.Largeround, easytoreadgauges,asymmetricalinstrumentpanelandthelargeoverhangingbrow. Allofthefunctionshousedinthecenter stackuserealknobsandtoggleswitches.No needforscanningandscrolling.FormfittingRecaroseatsholdthedriverandfront passengerincompletecomfortandalong withallofthelatestamenitiesnowexpected ofamodernnewcar,there’spushbutton startandkeylessignitionaswellasadaptive cruisecontrol.Asinglegorgeouspieceofengineturnedaluminumsweepsacrossthe dash.Notablyalloftheshinybitsareactuallychromeplated.There’snomorecoated plastic.ThelatestversionofFord’sSyncresidesinthe8”screenatthetopofthestack.

InpristineBanff,theBellsencountered theworld’speople,alldrawntothemountains,respondingtothesamecall.Ontheir firsteveninginthemountaintown,thecoupledecidedtohavedinneratSt.JamesIrish Pub.MeticulouslyauthenticinEmeraldIsle décor,detail,fareanddrink,thenoisy, bustlingpubattendedtoitsguestswell. “TherewereIrish,Brits,Dutch,German andAussiepeopleworkingthere,”Spike recalls.HeandChriswentthreenightsin arow.

OriginallycalledChabaImneorBeaver LakebyFirstNationspeople,FatherPierreJeanDeSmetinthe1800srenamedit MaligneLakeforitsmalignant,wickedwatersinspringtime.Carvedbyglaciersand measuringapproximately22.4kmlong,the lakeofferscanoeistsplentyofhealthyexercise.SpiritIsland,asmalldotofland crowdedwithevergreentrees,sitsinthe

middleofthelake;itspositioningagainst abackdropofsnow-cappedmountains havemadetheviewoneofthemostphotographedintheworld.

In1907,FirstNationsresidentSamson Beaverdrewamapand guidedsurveyor MarySchafferthroughthearea.Ayearlater, theyandanotherwomanexploredMaligne Lake.Maryreturnedin1911tosurveythe lakeandbestowherownnamesonthe mountainsandpeaks.“MaryrodeonhorsebackfromPennsylvaniatoMaligneLake,” Spikenotesinwonder.“Ihavesomuch respectfortheearlyexplorers.”

Moderndayadventurershaveitmuch easier.Afterarrivingbycarortourbus, “peopleweresittingintheirlawnchairs,just takingintheview,”saysSpike.

EnroutetoMaligneLakeisthe27km longMedicineLake,calledMagicLakeby earlyFirstNationspeoplebecauseofthe water’sdisappearingtrickintheautumn. “TheIndiansdon’tlikeitbecausetheythink it’sspooked,”Spikeexplains.“Theystay awayfromit.”

MoregreatvistasawaitedtheBellsinthe MarmotBasinSkiAreainJasperNational Park.Askiliftcarriedthecouplehighupa mountainslope.

Knowingtherewerebears,coyotes,

wolves,caribou,moose,muledeerandother verywildwildlifelivingintheRockies,the Bellskeptasharplookout.“Weonlysaw wildbighornsheepandatadistance,an elk,”Spikesays.Asubjectisasubject, though,sothoseanimalsbecamepartofthe Bellphotocollection.

ArielleGrondin,17yrsold,wasdiagnosedwithCysticFibrosisat9daysold.Lifeexpectancyusedtobe16yearsold,butwithnewtreatmentsbeingdiscoveredeveryday, peoplewiththisdiseasearelivingintotheir40s.

Insteadofherdiseaseslowingherdown,Grondinhasdonepresentationsatlocal schools,WindsorSt.ClairRotary,andforthelastthreeyearshashostedthe“Musicfor Life”alldayconcertatJohnnyShotzraisingalmost$23,000insupportofcysticfibrosis.ThisyeartheeventwillbeSaturdayApril5th,2014withlocalyouthbands.“Aslong asIcanrememberI’vevolunteered.Ijustreallyenjoyhelpingothers,”saysGrondin.

BEGUNASAJESUIT missionto theHuronPeoplein1728,the parishofOurLadyofAssumption hasbeenprovidingministryandfellowshipineveryerasince.Today,it isimportanttothelifeandworkof itsmembersandwidercommunity. However,thedeterioratingconditionofthe169-year-oldchurch buildingisthreateningtorequire theabandonmentofthebuilding andclosingofthechurch.

Determinedtosavethehistoric andarchitecturalmasterpiece, parishionersandc ommunitysupportersarejoiningforcestoraisethe immediaterequirementof$7millionofthe$10millionneeded.

“OurOntariorootsstartedright here,”saysFatherWilliamRiegel. “OurLadyofAssumptionChurch isthefirstthingyouseewhenyou crosstheAmbassadorBridge.We needtopreserveourcultureandour history.”

“Assumptionisathrivingparish thatnotonlyservesover1,200familiesbutisavitalcommunityasset thathostsmanycivicandcultural events.Ourdiocesefirmlysupports thissignificantrestorationinitiative,”BishopFabbrosays.

Facedwithcriticalstructuralissuesandsafetyconcerns,“Ithas reachedthestagethatbandaidsare nolongerpossible.Wesimplycan’t continuetofunctionasaparishunlessthechurchisrestored.”

Thefundraisingcampaigniswell underway.AlQuesnelsetitinmotionwithhisinitialdonationof $1.25million.Then,inNovember 2013,headditionallypledgedto matchdonors’newcontributions totaling$3.5million,foratotal donationofanunprecedented $4.75milliontoanyoneprojectin thisregion.

MostRev.RonaldP.Fabbro,BishopofLondon,observes, “Ourhopeisthatthisrestorationprojectwillinspiremanyto comeforwardnowwiththeirdonationstopreservethisimportantheritagesite.Giftsofanysizeareneededandappreciated.”

Workcouldbeginasearlyasspring.“Itwilltakeatleastfive yearstodothisjobbutthelongerwewaittobegin,themore damagewewillbefacing.Wereallyneeddonorstocomeforward now,”Fr.Riegelaffirms.Walls,turrets,roof,foundations,ceiling timbersandotherareasneedsubstantialwork,allspecialized sincethebuildingisanhistoricalmonument.TheOntarioHeritageFoundationhelpedwithastrategytomoveforward.

Whenrestorationiscompleted,“itwillbringthechurchup toastandardthatwillsecureitsuseforthenext100years,”says Fr. Riegel.

ThatisencouragingtothemanypeoplefromWindsor, Amhersburg,LaSalleandotherregionstoattendworshipservices,communityanduniversitychoralperformances.

Ministryincludescollaborationswithseparateschoolsinthe parishandoutreachtoUniversityofWindsorstudents.“Allliturgicalandsacramentallifeofthestudentsiscentredhereatthe 7:30MassonSundayevening.Theplaceisusuallyfull,” Fr.Riegelsays.“Iwasn’tsentheretocloset hechurch.We’re goingtopreservethisspiritualandculturalcentreandHeritage Treasure.”

TAMMYLAFRAMBOISEISLIVINGTHE Americandream,butremainsstaunchly Canadian.Andflashingherwinningsmilesheproudlyproclaims,“Ipronouncethelastletterofthealphabet‘zed’,andstillsay‘eh’!”

TheWindsornative,whohastravelledandentertainedaroundtheworld,has justaddedanotherchaptertohergrowinglistofachievements:thatofanauthorof children’sbooks.

Tammywhocelebratedher37thbirthdayinOctober,wasborninWindsor,thesecond ofthreechildren.Afterattendingelementaryschool,shematriculatedfromKennedy CollegiateandenrolledattheUniversityofWindsorwhereshegraduatedwithadegreein Sociology.WhenquestionedaboutthedegreeinSociology,shequicklyandemphatically states:“AllIeverwantedtodowasdance–thedegreewasabackupplan!”

Shewasintogymnasticsataveryyoungage,influencedbyheroldersister.ButTammy admits,“shewasmuchbetterthanme.Shehadthepersonality forgymnastics...thattough attitude.IwasalittlemoresensitivesoIendeduptellingmymomIwantedtotrysomethingelse.Attheageof11,IentereddanceclassesatNancyPattison’sDanceWorldand knewfromthebeginningthatdancewasmypassionandIwasgoingtodoitforever.”She studiedmostdisciplinesofdance–ballet,tap,jazz,hip-hopandevensomeHawaiiandancing.Notsurprisingly,shesuccessfullycompletedalllevelsthatrequiredexams.Withintwo yearsshehadjoinedthecompetitionteamatthestudioandremainedapartoftheteam allthroughhighschoolwhereshewonanumberofscholarshipstoattendclassesinNew YorkandLosAngeles.ShecontinuedtakingclassesandteachingthroughUniversityand

alsodancedprofessionallyintheShowtime LoungeatCasinoWindsorandotherlocal events.

In2001shemovedtoLosAngeles(no problemstheresincehermotherwasborn inDetroit)andtookadvantageofthe opportunities thatwereoffered.Shemade appearancesonEntertainmentTonight,AccessHollywoodandMTV’sBecoming.She hastouredAustraliawithElvisToTheMax, hasappearedinexercisevideoswithDancingwiththeStarsco-hostBrookBurkeand fitnessgurusLeslieSasoneandJeffCosta, dancedonamusicvideowithteensensation AngelandperformedinseveralDisneyproductionsattheElCapitanTheatreinHollywood.Sheseemstohavefoundherniche inworkingmajorcorporateeventsaround theglobe.She’sdancedforBlueCross/Blue Shield,andEssilor,thecontactlensmanufacturer,participatedintheAmerica’sCup openingceremoniesinSpainandwasone ofthedancersinthelaunchfortheAudiR8 inHongKong.InLasVegas,shedancedfor theopeningofHueyLewisandtheNews andin-betweengigs,tooka6-monthdancingstintaboardacruiseship.

Overthepastfewyears,Tammyhadbeen thinkingaboutacareertransition,knowing thatherprofessionaldancecareercan’tlast forever.Inherlastyearofhighschool,she hadtakenawriter’scraftcoursethatproved tobebothenjoyableandsomethingshewas quitegoodat,sodecidedthatwritingmight beagooddirectiontofollow.Incidentally, secondtodancing,writingisprobablyher secondloveinlife.Sherecalls;“asIwas teachingmore,IdiscoveredIhadaknackof communicatingwiththelittleones.Iwould makeupstoriestogetthemexcitedabout learningt odance.Parentsandco-workers wouldgivemesuchpositivefeedbackin comingupwithallthesefunideastohelp

thekidslearntheirsteps,soIthoughtit mightbefuntoputitdownonpaper.” Whichshedid.

Afteraboutfiveyearsofplanning,thefirst self-publishedPopsybookwasborn.

Themaincharacter,alittlegirl,wasinspiredbyTammy’snieceAva,whoalso dances.Thecharacter’sname,saysTammy, just“poppedintomyheadonenight,but unlikemyniece,Popsyhasredhairbecause it‘pops’outofthepagebetter.”Atpresent twoPopsybooksareonthemarker.Thefirst onetitled‘BalletMyWay’,wasreleased about18monthsago,whilethesecondone whichcameoutinDecemberiscalled‘Tap isaSnap.’Twomorewillcompletetheset... ‘JazzwithPizzaz’and‘HipHiptotheTop’ whicharecurrentlyintheworks.

Formorethan15years,theDr.Y.EmaraBuilding(formerly MaldenPark)hasprovidedtheagingpopulationinourcommunity withanalternativetoaninstitutionalsettingbyofferinganoutpatientadultdayprogram.Participantsareprovidedphysicalexercise, socialization,andcognitivestimulation.TheAdultDayProgramis theonlyoneofitskindinWindsorandEssexCountythatprovides seniorsachangeofscenerywhilegivingtheirfamiliesandcaregivers timeoff.

TheTriplePprogram(PositiveParentingProgram),developedin Australia,isaparentmanagementtrainingprogramdesignedto addressbehavioural,emotional,anddevelopmentalproblemsin childrenandadolescentsupto16yearsofage.Itisanotherunique

programatthecampusthathasenjoyedgreatsuccess.TriplePLevel 4Groupprogramsallowsupportandfeedbackfromthefacilitator andfromotherparticipatingparents,therebynormalizingtheir parentingfeelings.Here,parentschoosetheirowngoalstomonitor andthestrategiestoimplement,therebyallowingparentstotake ownershipintheprocessoftheintervention.

RecentlyHôtel-DieuGraceHealthcareannouncedplansfora MentalHealthandAddictionsCentreindowntownWindsortobe openedinthesummerof2014.Workingwithcommunitypartners, thissitewillassistindividualswhorequirestabilizationandintervention,whereneedssuchashousing,finance,andprimarycarewillbe addressed.

“FornowwearecallingitanInnerCityCentreStrategy,”saidSonja Grbevski,Lead,IntegratedMentalHealthServicesatHDGH.“We willbebuildingonanexistinglocation,rightinthecoreofthecity. Theprogramweareplanningwillincludeastabilizationperiod,followedbyaninterventioncomponentthatcanlastthreetofiveweeks.”

AspartoftheOntarioBariatricNetwork,thefirstBariatricRegionalAssessmentandTreatmentCentre(RATC)openedinWindsorin2009andisnowlocatedatHôtel-DieuGraceHealthcare.This RegionalAssessmentCentreinvolvesamulti-disciplinaryteamof bariatricexperts(endocrinologists,Psychologist,Psychiatrist,nurses, dietitians,socialworkers,PhysiotherapistandKinesiologist)andrefers patientstotheappropriatetreatment(surgery,and/ormedicalweight management).

“OurRegionalAssessmentTreatmentCentreistheonlyprogram thissideofGuelph/Hamiltonwhichmeanswehavepatientscoming tousfromalloverSouthwesternOntario,”saidNancyBerthiaume, ManageroftheWindsorBariatricRegionalAssessmentandTreatmentCentre.“Fromreferraltosurgery,weworkwiththepatientfor aboutayearandthenfollowthemforfiveyearsaftersurgery–no oneelsedoesthatinNorthAmerica.”

InnovationcontinuesintheRegionalRehabilitationprogram.A newcaredeliverymodelhasbeencreatedtoimproveaccesstocare andtherapyintensity.Itiscalled,ImprovingRehabilitationIntensity –ACommonSenseApproach.Inthepast,strokepatientsonthe inpatientRehabilitationUnitwerereceivingtwotothreehoursof therapyperdayandthetransferofskillsfromtherapytothedaily routineweresub-optimal.Staffwasfrustratedastheyoftencompeted toseepatientsduringpeaktimesintheday,andrealizedtheyneeded tochangethecaredeliverymodeltoimproveaccesstocareand therapyintensity.

HUGHLEAL’S40YEARMUSICAL careerhasbeenamazingtosaytheleast.Not onlyisthe63year-oldanexcellentmusician,buthe’salsobeenactiveinjazzand concertpromotionandrecordlabeloperations.He’saguitarist,banjoistandisthe leader/guitaristofhisownquartet.Lealwas anadvertisingsalesrepwiththeWindsor Starfor9years,he servedasdirectorofmarketingandpublicrelationsfortheWindsor Symphonyandwasconcertmanager/publicistfortheUniversityofWindsorSchoolof Musicfrom1990to2004.

Lately,hehasstartedworkonasecond CDwith‘TheSpeakeasyQuartet’(SEQ), whichheorganizedabout3yearsago. TheplayersincludeHughonguitar,his co-organizerRayManzerolle,anoutstandingaltoandsopranosaxophonist,cellist MikeKaroubandpianoplayer,Mike Karloffwho’sactivelyinvolvedinthemusic

BorninWindsor,Hughgrewupinafamilythathadnomusicalbackground.Aftercompletingelementaryschool,hewenttoKennedyCollegiatewherehewasanexcellentmiddle-distancerunner,managingtoearnanumberofcitych ampionshipsinSWOSSA cross-country,half-mileandmilecompetitions.Healsodevelopedaninterestinmusic andasa13year-oldteenagerjustenteringhighschool,hehadbecomefascinatedwith Dixielandjazz.ClarinetistPeteFountainwasoneofhisheroes,eventhoughtheBeatles hadjustenteredtheNorthAmericanmusicscene.Herecalls,“thatamidchantsof‘theBeatleshavearrived,theBeatleshavearrived,”Iwasaskingclassmateshaven’tyouheardofthe Duke sofDixieland?”

Withhismusicalthirstintensifying,theyoungHughhadbecomeacompetenttrombone player.SoonafterhediscoveredtheDixielandbanjo,rentedone,tooklessonsandwithin18monthsfelthehadenoughnervetoplayinpublic.Althoughheenrolledatthe

UniversityofWindsor,hedoessay,“atthe timeIwasmoreinterestedinplayingthe banjowithDougJacobs’RedGarterBanjo Bandathisnightclub,soIreallydidn’tcare toomuchaboutthebooks.IfoundwhateverPsychcoursesIcouldandpretendedto studyandsomehowmanagedtogetadegreeinPsychology.”Hewasalsoplayingat leastfournightsaweekandaftergraduatinghechosetotraveldownthemusical path.Unfortunately,theclubcloseddown aftera fewyears,soHughreturnedtothe UniversitywhereheearnedanhonorsdegreeinBusinessAdministrationandgota jobinsales.

After13yearsonthebanjo,headdedthe rhythmguitartohisrepertoire,afterbeing invitedtojoinanotherband.Hisstyleis verymuchhisownandhecopiesnoone... eventuninghisguitardifferentlyfromthe norm.Hegenerallyplaysoneoftwovintage GibsonAcousticsfromthe1930s,neither ofwhichisfittedwithapickup.Toget moresound,heplacesasmallmicrophone intotheguitarandrunsthecordintoan amplifier.

Hisplayingcareerhasbeenawesome.For 8yearshetouredasguitaristandroadmanagerinMarcusBegrave’sTributetoLouis Armstrongandsince2005,hesupplied

guitarrhythmsforclarinetistDaveBennet’s TributetoBennyGoodman,travellingto atleast35Americanstates,Canadaand PuertoRico.Lealhasalsoappearedwith theDetroit,Toronto,VancouverandNashvilleSymphoniesandmoret han30other orchestras.

Hebeganpromotingconcertsin1977 andbroughttoWindsorlegendarymusiciansincludingDocCheatham,BuddyTate andCozyCole,survivingpioneersofthe 1920sand30s‘hotjazz’era.Theconcerts werefirststagedinlocalnightclubs,later movingtotheoriginalArtGalleryofWindsor,theUniversityofWindsorandtheCapitolTheatre.From1992through1996,the popularWindsorJazzFestivalsfeatured artistslikeRobMcConnellofthefabl ed BossBrassandvibraphonistextraordinaire PeterAppleyard.Infact,fanscanlookforwardtoanupcoming2DVDsetdocumentingsomeofthosehistoricconcerts.

In1983,LealstartedtheParkwood Recordslabelwiththereleaseofanalbum featuringtrumpeterDocCheatham.RecordedinNewYork,itwasnamedoneof thetoptenjazzLPsoftheyearbytheNew YorkTimes.Through1998thelabelproducedtwodozenmoreLPsandCDreleases. AndLealisabouttoreleaseaCD,recorded

some20yearsago,featuringhisDixieland bandattheMontreuxDetroitJazzFestival.

Leal’slatestgemwasanappearanceNovember1statthelegendaryCarnegieHall inNewYorkwhereheappearedwithDave Bennett’sjazzcomboforasymphonypops programtitledSingSingSwing.Thegroup playedwiththeNewYorkPopsOrchestra conductedbyStevenReineke.“Itwasagreat thrillandagreathonor,”saysHugh,“itwas veryexciting,especiallybeingsurroundedby allthese musicalvirtuosos.Theplaceisjust drop-deadgorgeous...withgoldandred seats,thesoundwasgreat,thesoundtechniciansweregreatandDaveBennettnever playedbetter.Wegotastandingovation fromthecrowdof2,800people–youhad topinchyourself.”

ForthesixtheditionoftheWinterClassic,theNHLselectedDetroitasthehostteam. DelayedbyayearbecauseoftheNHLstrike,theanticipationwashighforthemat chup betweenthetwoOriginalSixteams,theDetroitRedWingsandtheTorontoMapleLeafs.

AnewGuinnessBookofWorldRecordwassetwhen105,491fansattendedtheNew Year’sDaygameattheUniversityofMichiganstadium,“TheBigHouse.”Thegamebeat thepreviousattendancerecordof104,173setwhentheUniversityofMichiganplayed MichiganStatein2010.ItwasthehighestattendanceinNHLhistoryandthesecond highestinhockeyhistory.WhileRedWingsfansweredisappointedwhentheteamlost 3-2inanovertimeshoot-out,itcouldnottakeawayfromtheexcitementoftheday. Eachticketholderreceivedaspecialcommemorativeseatcushionfromthegame.

TheideaoriginatedintheU.S.Itcaught oninTorontoandthen,abouttwoyears ago,inLondon.“IhaveanofficeinLondon andmybranchmanagerattendedameeting there.Shesaid,‘Thisconceptisgreat.You shoulddothisinWindsor.’Thatwasthe startofthinkingaboutitandgettingit going,”saysco-founderMaureenLucas.

February2013sawWindsor’sfirstmeetingwith80womenonboard.ByNovember,therewere110.Nearly$40,000had beenraisedandsharedamongst theWindsorResidenceforYoungMen,Forgotten Harvest,WindsorLifeCentreandWindsor RegionalHospitalFoundation’sSexual Assault&DomesticViolenceTreatment Centre.

“Alotofpeoplehearaboutnational organizations,butwhatyoudon’thear aboutissomeofthesmaller,localcharities,” Maureensays.“Really,whatwe’redoingis shiningaspotlightonthem.100womensit inaroomandgetachancetohearforfive minutesaboutalocalorganizationthatis doingreallygreatthings.Halfthepeople say,‘IfI’dknownaboutitsooner,Iwould havedonesomething.’”

“It’sgreattolearnaboutcharitiesinour community–thosequietheroeswhoare workingsohardtomakechange,”Lizsays.

INSETTLERS’TIMES,WINDSOR’SWOMENGATHERED aroundaquiltstretched onaframeandstitchedindustriouslytohelpkeepaneighbourwarm.Duringwartime, theymetinoneanother’shomestoknitsocksandrollbandagesforthecity’ssoldiersoverseas.Today,theyare100WomenWhoCare,membersofagrowinggrassrootsmovement honouringwhatwomenhavealwaysknown:Small,individualcontributionsaddedtogethercanmakeabigdifference.

Membersnominatecharitiesbyputting theorganizations’namesintoahat.Three charitiesaredrawnandtheirnominators speakaboutthem.Thenmemberscast theirvotestodeterminewhichcharitywill receivethecollectivedonation.Majority rulesandeverybodywritestheircheques.If amembercan’tattendthatevening,shehas twoweekstomailhercontribution.The nominatorofthechosenorganizationattendsthechequepresentationtothecharity afterward.

Atthenextmeeting,arepresentativefrom thereceivingcharitytalksabouthowthe fundswereused.Beforeattendinga100 Womenmeeting,“didweknowthatthe SexualAssault&DomesticViolenceTreatmentCentreneedsmoneyforpajamasand teddybearsforwhenkidswhohavebeenassaultedcomein?It’sthekindofthingthat makesyouthink,‘Oh,mygoodness.Thisis theleastIcando,’”Maureensays.

Somemembersincreasetheamounton theirchequesordecidetocontribute independentlytoacharitytheyfeelstrongly about.

Thespotlightisalsocastontheotherorganizationsinthehat.Maureensays,“Alot ofwomenleavethemeetinganddoonline researchaboutwhatthedifferentcharities aredoinginthecommunity.Sothatspotlightkeepsgettingbiggerbecausewe’rehearingaboutthemandit’spullingatourheart stringstoknowwhatanorganizationis doing.”

Wantingtodotheirpart,time-crunched womenoverloadedbyobligationsappreciatetheefficiencyof100WomenWhoCare. Datesarescheduledayearahead.“Youwalk inthedoorat5:30,wecompleteevery meetingby6:30.Ifyouwanttogohome andcookdinner,thereistimetodothat.

Someofourwomenchoosetogoforcoffee ordinnerafterwardwithoneanother,” Maureensays.

WalkervilleBrewery,CanterburyCollege, WindsorYachtClubandFogolarFurlan Clubgenerouslydonatedmeetingspace, refreshmentsandconvenientparkingtothe groupin 2013.Thewomenarelookingfor apermanenthome.

Whentheycometogether,positiveenergy isgenerated.“It’snotanetworkerbutthere’s opportunitytomeetpeoplewhoarelikeminded.Thenthecharities:somepeople sitintheroomandareintears.Itisreally moving,”Maureenfinds.“Andthenweend withthefeelgoodofmakingthedonation. It’sabitofarollercoasterwhileyou’rethere.”

Fortunately,womenaren’tafraidofemotion.Maureenrecalls,“Ijokinglysaid atthe endofameeting:AKleenexinonehand andachequebookintheother.”

Lizremarks,“Thepassionintheroom, theenergyyousee-everyonementionshow energetictheyfeelafterwardabouttheimpactthey’vemadeinonehour.It’sexciting tohear.”

Newguestsarecasuallyintroducedto otherpeopleintheroomandinvitedtosee howthemeetinggoes.“It’saverycomfortableenvironment,”Maureensays.

“Itcouldn’thavebeenabetteryear.I thinkallofthewomenhaverecommitted forasecondyearandsaytheyaregoingto bringfriendsintothegroup.Fourlocal charitieshavebenefitedfromthesemeetings.Wefiguredouttheadminsideand howtomaketheflowworkandmakesure wegetthemeetingsfinishedontime,”Maureensumsup.

IT’SHARDTOIMAGINEWHAT thelocalhealthcare scenewilllooklike10yearsfromnow,butWindsorRegionalHospitalwantstoshowyouthepossibilities.

Overthelast10years,23newreplacementhospitals havebeenbuiltorarecurrentlyunderwayinOntario.In themeantime,WindsorRegionalHospital’stwocampuses arebecomingincreasinglyoutofdateandunabletomeet theneedsofpatientsandstaff.

In2012,TheWindsorHospital’sStudyTaskForcerecommendedtheplanningandconstructionofanewsinglesiteacutecarefacilityforWindsor-Essex.Thetaskforce foundstrongcommunitysupportforanewhospital,given thecostofrenovatingexistingfacilitieswellexceededthat ofanew,state-of-the-artfacility.

Afterreviewingthereport,theprovinceprovidedfundingtomoveforwardwiththeinitialplanningofanew hospital.Stage1ofthatplanwassubmittedtotheMinistryinNovember2013.Itoutlineshowserviceswill be deliveredinthefutureandgivespreliminaryoperating costs,staffingandbedrequirements.Workonthenext stageisexpectedtogetunderwayandpossiblycompleted thisyear.Stage2willincludemoredetailedplansofwhat thehospitalwilllooklike,whatservicesitwillofferand whereitwillbelocated.

Thisisnotjustaboutbricksandmortarthough,thisis awholenewwayofdeliveringhealthcare.Anewhospital willallowustoprovidemoreefficienthealthcare delivery, byfocusingonadesignthatputspatientsfirst.Anewhospitalwillhelpimproveinfectioncontrol,byboostingthe numberofsingle-patientroomsfromfewerthan30%to atleast80%.Anewhospitalwillalsoallowustobetter

Overtheyears,Owenhadcontemplated writingabook.Hesaysnotonlydidhe workwithmanyofthemusicians,buthe regularlywroteaboutthemandreadmany storiesabouttheold-timerswhousedto gracethedancehallsandbarsinthearea. Themorehethoughtaboutit,themorehe becamedeterminedtoputthosestoriesin writing.

Incidentally,OwenJoneswon’tbeahigh schooldropoutforlong.ThiscomingJune 27th,atthefinalgraduationceremoniesever atForster,whichisclosing,he’llbereceivinganhonor arydiplomathankstothe schoolprincipal,whorecentlyboughta copyofMUSICfromWINDSOR.

There’snodoubtthatOwenisuptothe task.He’shob-knobbedwithsomeofthe bestinthebusinessandisprobablythebest guyinthecitytowriteaboutthepeople whohavecontributedtoourcity’swonderfulmusicallegacy.
