ONHERBUCKETLIST,JenniferJoneshadneverincluded seeingakangarooupcloseandpersonal.UntilshewenttoAustralia inJuneandencounteredadozen,completewithjoeysintheir pouches,bouncingaroundherfriend’sfrontlawnanddiningon thegrass.

Afterthatexperience,Jennifer’sbucketwaslookingprettyfull. ButthentheWindsorwomanwasgiventhechancetocuddlea sweetlittlekoala,stillwarmanddrowsyfromhislengthynap.

TheLandDownUnderwasturningtheavidtraveler’sexpectationsoftheworldupsidedown.Clearly,thesmallestoftheseven continentscouldoverflowanybody’sbucket.

TheopportunitytovisitAustraliaarosethroughtheannual RotaryInternationalconvention.Duringfourdaysofinspiration, educationandfellowshipinearlyJune,the2014eventbrought togethermorethan20,000RotariansinSydney.Windsor-Essexwas wellrepresentedbylocalRotariansincludingWindsorRoseland ▼

Thefirstorderofthedaywastogetto Australia.“Thiswasperhapsthelongest journeywehaveevertaken,”Jennifersays. Sheandherhusband,Nic k,flewwith LindaoutofDetroitMetroAirport,caught aconnectioninLosAngelesandfinally, morethan24hoursafterleavinghome, reachedtheirdestination.

“Wedecidedtomakethisanadventure anddosomepreandposttours,”Jennifer says.Theirstaywouldlasttwoweeks.

“Oneofthemostincrediblethingsabout Rotaryisthatitgivesyouachancetomeet andconnectwithpeoplefromallcorners oftheglobe.Throughourinvolvement,we becamedearfriendswithRotariansIanand JenniferScottwholivetwohoursoutside ofSydneyintheBlueMountains.”

Afterdeplaningat6a.m.,thethree Canadiansimmediatelyboardedatrainto theScotts’community.“Nottoletgrass growunderourfeet,byten-thirtywebegan afourandahalfhourhikethroughthe WentworthFallsareaoftheBlueMountains,”Jenniferchuckles.Themountain terrainsprawlsoveranareaofmorethan 1400sq.km.WentworthFallsareroughly halfwayin.

Partofthehikewasseveralthousand stepsupthesideofamountain.“Itwasthe lastthingonearthIthoughtI’dbedoing,” Jenniferadmits.“Goingdownwasactually harderthangoingupbecauseoftheimpact ontheknees.”TheCanadians’toilwasrewarded.“Thewholecanyonwasbreathtaking.Westumbledontowaterfallsand secretgardens,tuckedawaylikeamovie scene.Wewerespellbound.”

“Becauseitissooffthebeatentrack,it wasalsoveryquiet.Werarelysawanother person.”

Theirhosts,theScotts,insistedontakingtheCanadianstotheirbeachfrontcottageinBerraraBeach,31/2hoursnorthby vehicle.“Itwasanabsolutelygorgeous drive,”Jenniferenthuses.“Whenwearrived,that’swhenourfriendssharedwith usthatthisiswherethekangarooshang out.”

Amarsupialreceptioncommittee hoppedovertosayg’day.“Itwassucha magicalmoment.Theyweremagnificent!” saysJennifer.ThinkingofYouTubevideos

Walkingthroughtheneighbourhood, thefriendsencounteredmorekangaroos. Watchingmamaswaitpatientlywhiletheir joeysleanedoutoftheirpouchestonibble ongrass,Jenniferthought,“Dude,it’stime tomoveoutofthehouse.Youareclearly toobigtobeinthere.”

TheScottsrelatedhowthekangaroos fledtothesafetyoftheseawhenaforest firerippedthroughBerraraBeachseveral yearsago.Thoughthe6’tallanimalscould swim,theyweretoowearytoreturntoland afterthefirewasout.“Neighbourswent intothewaterandpulledouttheexhausted kangaroos,”Jennifersays.

“Ihadnoideakangaroosweresucha bucketlistitemformeuntilthatmoment,” Jenniferadmits.“Thatcappeditoff.Ididn’tneedtoseeanotherdarnthing.”

However,Australiahadmanymoresurprisesin store.

Exhilarated,theCanadianspreparedto settleintoSydneyOlympicPark,30minutesoutsideofthecity,fortheRotary Internationalconvention.Withmorethan 1.2millionmembersworldwide,everyone lookedforwardtomakingandrenewing friendships.

Jenniferbelievestheannualconventions are“areallygreatwayforpeopletosee theworld,bothfromtheperspectiveof travelingbutalsofrombeinginanenvironmentwhereyouwalkdownahallway andsomeonehasaNigerianheaddresson, andsomeoneiswearingasariandsomeone iswearingakimonoandyourrealizeyou areallthesame,withthesamevisionfor whatwewantourworldtolooklike.”

Theviewfromdownunderwasflip flopped,however,withAustralia’swintertimeinfullswinginJune.Wintertemperaturesaverageahighof16degreesCelsius, sotodrawtourists,VividSydneywas created.FromMay22ndtoJune8th, 1,430,000peopleattendedthefestivalof light,musican dideasfeaturingover200 localandinternationalartists.TheSydney OperaHouseandothericonicbuildings wereilluminated.“Everysinglenightwas likebeingatthefireworksindowntown Windsor,”Jenniferrecalls.

Twodayslater,Australia’sPrimeMinister TonyAbbottopenedtheRotaryconventioninabigway,presentinghisgovernment’s$100millioncommitmenttothe volunteerorganization’sPolioPluscampaign.Jennifersays,“Rotaryisdetermined toeradicatepoliofromtheplanet.Weare withinacoupleofyears,hopefully,of achievingthatgoal.”

AfterthesuccessfulRotaryconvention concluded,Jennifer,NickandLindasetout toseemoreofAustralia.

Onedelightwasakookaburrasittingin atree(anoldgumtree,perhaps?).Thebig kingfisherbird’scallsoundslikeahuman beinglaughing.

Anotherthrillwasholdingakoalaand strokingitsbrownfur,“softlikeachenille blanket.”Jenniferlearnedkoalas’dietisprimarilyeucalyptusleaves,whichhavealow nutrientvalueandtakealotofenergyto digest.“Koalassleepalldaylongandare onlyupforanhourorso.Iguessthey’re kindoflazy.”Shewaspermittedtohold onewakeningfromhisslumbers.“Itwas somethingIneverexpectedtodoinmy life.Hewasjustthecutestlittlething!”

Australia’svariedmarinelifealsoappealedtotheCanadiantravelers.Theyflew northtoPortDouglasandthenventured intotheCoralSeatoexploretheGreatBarrierReef,aWorldHeritageSite.Inaboat withaglassbottomforunderwaterviewing,Jenniferspiedevidenceoftwocyclones thathadpassedthroughafewmonthsearlier.“Alotofthecoralwasreallydamaged. Thatwassad.Thoughtherewerecolourful fisheverywhere,you’dseelittlecoralgraveyardswherestuffgotbeatup.”Shewastold itwilltake10to30yearsforthereeftoregeneratewhatithaslost.

Feelingbadlyaboutthereef,Jennifer donnedflippers,maskandsnorkeland slippedintothesea.Ahugeturtlesoon joinedher.Astheyswam togetherforfive minutes,thewoman’sspiritslifted.“IalwaysthoughtoftheGreatBarrierReefasa scaryplacewithsharks.Butitwasajewel. OneofthethingsIlovedthemostabout AustraliawasitjustfeltlikeIwasathome,” Jenniferreflects.Thoughgeographically different,thecommonwealthcountry sharesCanada’smodelsofgovernmentand schoolsystems.Thepoliteandfriendly peoplecontributetothesenseoffamiliarity.“Togohalfwayacrosstheworldand cometoaplacetowhereyoufeellikeyou areinyourownbackyardisatreat.”

THESTORYOFJAMESCOOPER isafascinatingone.AccordingtoWindsorhistorianandauthor,MartyGervais,he “wasoneofthefewgiantsfromtheprohibitioneratodierich.”

OneofthewealthiestandpowerfulliquorbaronsinCanada, CooperlivedinWalkervilleandasMartywritesin“TheRumrunner,aprohibitionscrapbook”,whichwaspublishedin 1980:“Cooper’sfortunewastiedtotheconsumers’tastefor alcohol.Butinasensehewasneverconsideredabootlegger. Heneverrowedboatsladenwithcratesofwhisky,andhenever stolesilentlyfromWindsorcarryingillicitshipmentsofliquor toDetroit’sblindpigs.”Insteadhefoundloopholesinthe lawandsoldanddeliveredliquortoOntarioresidentsona completelylegalbasis.

CooperwasborninLondonin1874.Afterhighschoolhe workedforseveralrailroadsbeforesettlingintheWindsorDetroitareain1910afterthedeathofhisfirstwifewhohad lefthimasubstantialestate.Heusedthemoneytooperateseveralsaloons,speculatedinrealestateandhelpedrevolutionize farminginEssexCounty.Heboughta105acrefarmnearBelle Riverandtiledthepropertysothatspringplantingcouldstart uptotwoweeksearlierthannormal.Untilthen,cross-ditches weretheonlymeansofdrainage.Cooperbuiltatilingfactory onhisfarm,manufacturingmorethan10,000and20,000 bricksperdayandhesoldthosetilestofarmersatcost.He alsochangedtheegg andpoultryindustryinEssexCounty, organizedorchardandgrapeproduction,introducedtobacco farming,boostedthedairyandcattleindustry,increasedsugar beetyieldsandbuilttheBelleRiverSeedandGrainCompany.

In1920,hebuiltthefirstoftwoCooperCourts...atwo-storybuilding inBelleRiver,atacostof$40,000.Itbecameapopulargatheringspot forlocalpartiersandisstillfrequentedtoday.

ThesecondCooperCourt,locatedinWalkerville,wasamuchmore elaborateedifice–completedin1925,the40roommansioncostabout $200,000andoccupiedanentirecityblock.Theinteriorwastheessence ofopulenceandasMartyGervaisnotesinhisbook,“acolossalorgan pipedmusictoeveryroominthemansionandplayedmusicrollslikea playerpianobutwithcompletefidelityofnaturaltone.”Totalcostofthe organprojectalonewasmorethan$50,000!

TheinstrumentwasmanufacturedinGarwoodNewJerseybythe Aeoliancompanywhichwasprimarilyinthe‘chamber’organbusinessto provideentertainmentinthemansionsofmillionairesliketheRockefellersandtheVanderbilts.Between1895and1931,1071organswere installedinresidences.

JamesCooper’sAeolianOpus1535wasdeliveredonAugust13th, 1923withinstallationfinishedonNovember1st,thefollowingyear.The organhas22completesetsofpipesfromthebottomnotetothetopnote ofthekeyboardforatotalof1280pipeswhichwereoriginallylocatedin thebasement,sendingtheirsoundthroughgrillesortonechutesinthe floor.Soundwasalsopumpedthroughtherestofthehugehomethrough thegrillesandcouldbecontrolledbyopeningorclosingdoorsonthe chutesineachroom.TheOpus1535wasaDuo-Artplayer......meaning itcouldbeutilizedinitsautomaticmodetoprovidethefullfidelityofan actualinstrument,oritcouldbeplayedlive.Cooperhaditbothways...he enjoyedlivemusicduringbreakfastandothertimesoftheday,sohehad organistsonhispayroll.Therestofthetime,theorganwasleftinits playermode.

AfterCooper’sdeathin1931,themansionwasdismantledandthe landsold.HiswidowbuiltamuchsmallerhouseonDevonshireRoad nearOntarioStreet,usingbricks,windowsandpanellingthathadbeen salvagedfromtheoriginalplace.

In1946,theorganwasboughtbythethenowneroftheMorris SuttonFuneralhomeatGilesandGoyeauindowntownWindsorfor

$2,000.Itwasthendismantled,movedand re-installedinitsoriginalconfiguration withoutanymodificationsinthechapelata costof$12,000.Andtoday,after68years andanumberofrepairs,itstillproduces beautifulmusicutilizingtheoriginalmotor andblower.

Acoupleofyearsago,RonDossenbach, organistandchoirdirectorattheBedford UnitedChurch,discoveredtheinstrument whenhewasaskedtoplaythefuneral home’ssmallspinetorganataservice.The formertransportdriverforChryslerwho hadsomepreviousexperienceasapipe organtechnician,managedtogettheAeolianrunningagainafterhavingbeen“virtuallydeadfor10years”....basicallybecauseof neglectandlackofregularmaintenanceover theyears.Ashetellsit,“Iwasabletosolder awirehereandthere,Ihadtoreplaceand haveanumberofthehundredsofmagnets rewiredthatcontributetotheactionandreleatheredcertainelements.”Healsoreplaced afewmissingivorykeysandrepairedseveralstopsthathadbeenstuck.Headdsthat becauseofthefuneralhome’senvironment oftemperatureandhumiditysimilartothat ofamuseumwasextremely“friendly”tothe organwhichcontributedtoitsrelatively goodcondition.“Atthispoint,”hesays,“it worksinthesameconditionasitdidwhen itwasbrandnew...everysinglepipespeaks, everysinglecontrolworks,includingthe player....it’samarvel...it’samuseumpiece!” Hereturnstothefuneralhomeonceor twiceaweektoworkonhis‘pet’project andcontinuesstudyingthehistoryandmechanicsofAeolianOrganssohecanbedesignatedasthetruecustodianoftheWindsor organ.Helikenshispassionfortheorganto theguythatownsa1929Model‘A’Ford!

Itisnearlyimpossibletoputavalueon suchauniqueinstrument.Thehistorical valueoftheorganwouldlikelyeclipseitsappraised$400,000andifbuilttodaythereplacementcostcouldlikelydoublethat priceormore.

Dossenbachfiguresthereareatleast50 Aeolianorgansleftintheworld...mostof themarenotoriginalandhavereceivedradicalmodifications.Ofthisnumber,hefigurestherearelikelyfewerthan20ofthe original-conditioninstrumentsremaining... .withatleasttwooftheminCanada.

TheorganatMorrisSuttonisasightto beholdandtohearandthere’sspeculation thatthefuneral’shomechapelandsome timewiththeprohibition-erainstrument,is beingconsideredasanewstoponthepopularRumRunners’tours.

MIKEUREALWAYSKNEW whathewantedtodowhen“he grewup.”

Well,hereadilyadmitshehasn’tgrownupyet,butheisableto followhisdream,quitesuccessfullyinfact!

HewasborninWindsorandgrewupintheHarrowarea.DuringhisjunioryearsatGeneralAmherstHighinAmherstburg, Miketriedhishandatfootball....buthisheartwassomewhereelse –buriedintheguitarriffsofcountrymusic.Inhissparetimehe workedatthefamily’sconveniencestoreand restaurantinHarrow.Itwasingrade11whenhelearnedhowtoplaytheguitarand startedwritinghisownmusic.Hesangandplayedatanumberof sologigs,andgraduallyexpandedhiseffortstolocalbarsand restaurants.Atthesametime,realizingthevalueofagoodeducation,MikeenrolledattheUniversityofWindsorwherehegraduatedthisyearwithaBachelorofScienceDegreeinNursing.

Inthewinterof2012hefeltconfidentenoughwithhismusical abilityandheenteredanon-linecompetitiondefeatinghundreds ofcompetingartistsandreceivinganinvitationtoopenforthehot YouTubeartistTylerWardattheSoundAcademyinToronto.

But,therewasonlyoneproblem....heneededaband.Sohe reachedouttothreeofhismusicalbuddieswithwhomhehad recordingexperienceandtheyquicklyjoinedinfortheadventure. Inthesummerof2013,MikeUre,AlexSeguin,DeanMailloux andAidanJohnson-Bujoldplayedtheirfirst-evershowbefore thousandsofpeopleinToronto...andthey’veneverlookedback.

Theirperformancewassmooth,professionalandpolished...filled withthekindofenergythatmusicloverscrave!Itmarkedthe beginningoftheMikeUreBand.

“AfterToronto,”saysMike,“westartedplayingliveshowsalong withsomesmallbargigs...andweweregrowing.Wedidn’tknow muchaboutthebookingendofthebusiness,butlearnedaswe wentalonganditpaidoff.Wewentfromthesmallergigstoopeningforsomebignames...nottoobadforonlybeingtogethera year-and-a-half.”Thegroup’sfanbasegrewsteadilyafterappearancesattheRockN’HorseFest,theLaSalleStrawberryFestival, CosmosatCaesar’sWindsorandtheWindsorRiverCruise...just tonameafew.ThebandalsoopenedforcountrystarMichelle Wrightatlastyear’sShoresofErieInternationalWineFestivaland setthestageforDallasSmithattheBulln’BarrelUrbanSaloon, recognizedasoneof thetopcountrybarsinthearea.Mikealso creditstheinternet’ssocialmediasitesforbringingtheband’s attentiontothepublic.“It’sjustbeenblowingup,”hesays.

AlthoughtheMikeUreBandisbasicallyacountryorganization,themusic,accordingtoMike,goesalotdeeper.Hesaysit’s moreofa“newcountry,pop-rockcountry”style,aimedprimarily atyoungerpeopleintheirteenstothe20s...eventhoughmusic loversofallseemtobeembracingthegroupmoreandmore. DeanMailloux,also20,isthegroup’s drummerandtakescareofthestillphotographyandvideowork.Astudentatthe University,he’scurrentlystudyingbiologicalsciencesandintendstobecomeaveterinarian.

Theyoungestbandmemberis19yearoldleadguitaristAidanJohnson-Bujold.In thefall,he’llbeenteringhissecondyearof MusicstudiesattheUniversity.

Needlesstosay,theguysareveryclose. AccordingtoMike,“wegettogetherabout fivedaysaweekandpracticeatleasttwice duringthattime...sometimesmore.”

Hibbing,populationjustover16,000,isnodifferentfrom hundredsofotherruralcommunities,dottedwithfarmtractor dealerships,agriculturalimplementstores,andasmatteringofother shopsandbanks.

ButHibbingissignificantforonemajorreason.

It’sthetownwhereRobertZimmerman,akaBobDylan,grew up.Andthereforeforlegionsoffansaroundtheworlditholdsa veryspecialsignificance,evensacredground.It’smorethanenough togeneratefanpilgrimagestonorthernMinnesota,aoneandone halfhourdrivefromanysizablecity,Duluth,locatedatthefarend ofwesternLakeSuperior.

BobDylanwasactuallyborninDuluth.Butinkindergartenhis familymovedtoHibbing,75milesaway.Itisthere,inthenondescriptstuccohouseatthecornerof25thStreetandSeventhAve.–thehouse’saddressis2425Seventh–thatyoungRobertgrewup andwenttohighschool,convenientlylocatedacoupleofblocks upthestreet.HibbingHighisamammothbuildingknownlocally foritsarchitecturally-stunningtheatre,Hibbing’sequivalentofDetroit’sFoxTheatre.Dylansangtherein1958and1959justbefore packinghisguitarandheadingoffforfameandfortune.

AsforDylan’sboyhoodhome,thehouselookstobeexactlythe wayitdidwhenDylanlivedthere.It’sonaneatandtidylotwitha fewhangingplants.Butthealuminumwindowsaredatedandthere seemtobenonewarchitecturalfeatures.

InHibbing,unlikeinBrantford,Ont.–homeofWayneGretzky –thereisnolargesignannouncingthehometownhero.Anymentionofthesingerseemsgenerallysubdued.

Forexample,onDylan’sstreetthereisasignsaying“BobDylan

Drive.”Butitwasputupasrecentlyas2005longafterDylanleft Hibbingin1959.OneDylanwebsitedescribesHibbing’sambivalenceaboutitslocalson:“Hibbingdoesnotknowquitewhatto make”ofthepoetandsinger-songwriter,itsays,whoselegendary songsinclude"Blowin'intheWind,""TheTimesTheyAre a-Changin'",and"LikeaRollingStone."

HowardStreetisalsothesiteofthefourstoreyAndroyHotel,its fadedsignsurelythesameaswhenDylanlivedthere,promoting “Hibbing’sFinestSupperClub.”It’swhere13-year-oldRobert ZimmermancelebratedhisBarMitzvah.

Meanwhile,onHowardStreet,postersinstorefrontsannounce thecommunity’supcomingsummerhighlights.HibbingHigh Schoolwillhavean“allclass”reunioninJuly.Iaskedoneresident ifshethoughtheroldhighschoolclassmatewouldshowup.“Idon’t thinkhewill,he’saprettyprivateguy,”shesaid.

AnotherposteradvertisedaconcertbySixties’popstarsGary PuckettandtheUnionGapwho,believeitornot,alsohailfromHibbing.Infact,whenitcomestocelebrities,itturnsoutHibbing haslaunchedanamazingnumberofwell-knownpeople.

Dylanmaybethemostfamous.Butitwouldn’tbesurprisingif localfolkcaredmoreaboutnativesonslikebaseball’sRogerMaris andbasketball’sKevinMcHale.

Aswell,wineentrepreneurRobertMondavicomesfromHibbing.AsdoesVincentBugliosi,prosecutorintheCharlesManson case.There’salsoJenoPaulucci,founderofChunKingFoods.His autobiography“Jeno:ThePowerofthePeddler”isforsaleatthe registrationdeskattheParkHotel,whichthenow92-year-oldbusinessmanalsoowns.EvenformerUnitedStatesCommunistParty

Onecouldspendhalfadayinthismuseumwherethereareavarietyofexhibits–fromdisplaycasesofhistoricalbusd river uniforms,badges,logbooks,anunbelievable assortmentoftoybuses,promotionalmaterial,advertisements,videosanddioramas. She’saWindsornative–bornatHotelDieuHospitalin1965, aboutayearafterherparentshadarrivedherefromEnglandand shespentmostofheryoungeryearsintheLaSallearea.Herfather, Eric,awell-knownmusicianstilllivesinthefamilyhomeoffTodd Lane.Hisownback-storyisfascinating...inEnglandhewas a memberofthewell-knownWolverineJazzBand,whichatone timehadsharedspacewiththeBeatlesin“TheCave”.InWindsor,hestartedanotherbandwhichplayedregularlyatsomeofthe betterclubsintheareaincludingtheTopHat,theElmwoodand theoldImperialRoom...alongwithclubsintheDetroitarea. Giventhatbackground,it’snowonderhislittlegirlturnedtoa lifeinshowbusiness.

AftergraduatingfromtheSandwichSecondarySchool,Michelle studiedadvertisingforayearatSt.ClairCollegebutit“didn’tring mybell”.ThenshespentayearattheUniversityofWindsorfora courseincommunications....thatdidn’tworkeither.In1983, shewasofferedajobwiththeCommunitySpiritofWindsorPride Players,acity-fundedinitiativewherefiveyoungpeoplespentthe summerinvariousparksandplaygroundsperformingskits designedtoinformkidsabouttheimportanceofcalling9-1-1in casesofemergencyandotherdangersthatcouldadverselyaffect theirlives.

Subsequently,shehookedupwithTheatreWindsorand appearedinthestagepresentationof“TheMousetrap”andother productions–theperformingbughadgrabbedholdandshewas

onherway.“Lateron,”shesays,“TonyPoserofSuchandSuch Productions,theonlyguyinWindsorwhowasdoingmurder mysteries,gavemeacallwhichturnedouttobemyfirst‘professional,payingjob’,outsideofmystintwiththeCityofWindsor.” Today,nearly30yearslater,Michelleisstillknockin’emdeadwith hermurdermysteriesandothercomedicendeavours.

AfterTonylefttown,Michellecontinuedthemurder-mystery traditionthroughherowncompany,MJMEntertainmentProductions,eventuallyconnectingwiththedowntownCapitol Theatre.Hershowswerealwayssoldoutandbecamesopopular thatadvertisingwasn’tevennecessary.However,themagicalrun stoppedin2007whenthetheatrewentbankrupt.“Itwasdevastating,”saysMichelle.“Ihadtore-evaluateeverythingandtooka jobattheCasinoforawhile,butaftertwofailedpregnanciesand beingtoldIcouldneverhavechildren,Irealizedthatentertainmentwasthelifeforme,soIsetaboutrebuildingmycompany. But,wouldn’tyouknowit.AcoupleofmonthslaterIdiscovered Iwasindeedpregnantandtoday,myhusbandGlenandIarethe parentsofawonderful11year-oldson,Noah.Mylifewasupside down,butI’mstillhere!”

Today,she’sbusierthanever,continuingtodomurder-mysteriesandimprov-comedy.Sheworkswithacoregroupof4actorsfor the2½hourperformances.Thereareregularappearancesat DucksOnTheRoofinAmherstburgandattheVerdiClub.The groupalsoperformstwiceayearatHeritageVillage.Michellehires onlylocalactors,whoare“ofprofessionalquality”.Manyofthem havedonefilmincludingherleadactor,JasonGale,who’sappeared inTV’sOnceUponATimeandinanumberofdocumentaries.

“Theclub’sboardof2013seizedonthisandsaidwe’regoing todosomethingaboutit,”remembersGaryGeoffrey,Beach Grove’sgeneralmanager.“It’sanoldbuilding.Notalothadbeen donetoit.Itwasinneed.”

Memberswereaskedfortheirideasandawishlistwascreated. Outofthatemergedasolidplan,architecturalrenderings, interiordesignplansandtendersfortheworkrequired.Ahuge majorityofmembersgavetheirvoteofapprovalforthe $4,642,000budget.

WithaneyeontheMar.31st,2014completiondateforthe totalremodelproject,“werantheclubatbreakneckspeedtill December,2013,”Garysays.ThekitchenshutdownonJan.7th andwasdemolished.Itsrebuildcost$750,000.

“WekeptcurlinggoingthroughtoMarch,”Garyrecalls.Then thelockerroomsweretornapartandnewwashroomswerebuilt. Dustwasbeingraisedinotherareasofthe27,000sq.ft.club asthey,too,underwentrefurbishment.Everytwoweeks,thegeneralmanagerwalkedthroughthejobsite,videographingthe

AdditionalcreativereuseofexistingmaterialsisevidentintheSt.ClairLounge’snew bar:ItslightgranitecountertopsareilluminatedbyBeachGrove’supcycledchandeliers outfittedwithoversizedEdisonlightbulbs.

Oneeagerlyanticipatedfeatureofthe club’sremodelwasthenewoutdoorspace connectedtotheSt.ClairLounge.“Webuilt adeckatthebackthatismagnificently large,”saysGary.Itisnowarrangedwith weatherresistantwovenresinarmchairsand sofaswithdeepcushions.“Thecoffeetables arealsogasfirepitsthattakethechilloutof theaironcoolevenings,”Jillsays.

Forthemostpart,theclub’sRose& CrownFineDiningandtheGreatHallwere preserved.Theoriginalraisedpanelwood panelsstillgracetheGreatHall’swalls. Newchandeliers,sconcesanddraperiesrefreshtheroomswheremembershavedined andcelebratedtheirspecialoccasionsfor generations.

Ultimately,Jillsays,“Thedesignteamcollaboratedtocreateanupdated,classiclook thatwouldhavelongevity,payhomageto therichhistoryoftheclub,appealtothe currentdemographicofmemberswith youngfamiliesandfunctionwellforavarietyofevents.”

MemberswereintriguedtoseeifHousewears,ADAandSTCConstructiondeliveredontheirvision.OnMarch31st,as promised,BeachGrove’stransformationwas finished.Theclub’spresident,GoranTodorovic,hadguidedmembersthroughtheconstructionphaseandispleasedbytheir response:“Membersatisfactionisoverthe top.Manymemberssaidtome,‘It’sbetter thanweexpected.’”

DanaRomualdiisoneofthosegiftedpeoplewithmanytalents–andsheusesthem. Currently,she’sagrade2teacherattheQueenElizabethElementarySchoolin Leamington.HappilymarriedtoPhil,who’semployedbytheCatholicSchool Board,she’stheproudmotheroftwochildrenTylerandShannon.

BornandraisedintheSunParlortown,DanaLearwenttotheMargaretD. BennieElementarySchoolandattendedKingsvilleHightotakeadvantageofthe musicprogramthere.Withherexceptionalsingingvoiceshebecameanactivememberoftheschoolchoirandperformedinanumberofmusicalswithlocalgroups atvariouslocationsthroughoutthecounty.Aftermatriculating,shestudiedatthe UniversityofWindsor,graduatingwithadegreeinSocialWork.Inherthirdand fourthyears,aspartofhertwodaysofweeklyplacementactivities,sheworkedwith chronicallymentally-illadultsinDetroit.Eventuallyshereturnedtoschooland earnedherteachingcertificate.

HerfirstmajorjobwasSubstanceAbuseCo-ordinatorwiththeSalvationArmy inWindsor.Shesays,“peoplewouldcometomeaboutaddictions,buttheyalso openedupaboutotherlifegriefandlossissues–theirfamiliesandtheirchildren andIrealizedthereweren’tmanyresourcesouttherethathelpeddealwiththose situations.”ItwasatthattimethatDana’shusbandsuggestedmaybesheshould considerwritingabookonthesubject.

“I’vealways likedwriting,”shesays,“eversinceI wasyoung.Eveninelementaryschool,Icouldjust rattleoffpoemsandjournalsquickly....itwasalways somethingIenjoyed.Mymomkeptalotofthem andoccasionallyshewouldgivethembacktomein cardsorletters.”Danarecallsthatwritingabook hadalwaysbeeninthebackofhermind...“itwas onmybucketlist.”

Severalyearsagowhenherchildrenweremuch younger,Danahadwrittenakids’storyongrief andloss.Shesaysit’slooselybasedonthepassing ofSeanMcInnis,ayoungLeamingtonfirefighter wholeftbehindhiswifeAmyandtwodaughters, MeghanandMarissa,oneofwhomsharesabirthdaywithDana’sdaughter.Thatstorysatinthe author’scomputerfornearly9yearsbeforebeing revivedlastyearandturnedintoabooktitled “MagicKisses”,AGriefJourneyFromHeartache toHope.

InDana’swords:“thisisafictionalstorybased ontrueexperiencesofgrievingfamiliesandistold throughthenarrationofan8year-oldgirlnamed Mollywhoalsohasayoungersister.Theirfather haspassedawayandthegrievinggirltriesmany creativewaystobringhimback.”Shepraysfora miracleandatChristmastimesheasksSantaClaus forassistance.Atamagicshowwhereamagician hasmadeawomandisappearbeforemagically bringingherback,Mollyaskshimtodothesame forherfather.Thefamilyevenstoppedeating spaghettiandmeatballs,becausethathadbeen dad’sfavouritemeal.Gradually,though,Molly realizesherdadwon’tbecomingbackandshebeginstalkingaboutitwithhermother.
