Home is where stories begin, evolve, are retold and savoured. Windsor Life appreciates the value of great stories and in this, our Home issue, we have a fresh batch for your enjoyment and enlightenment. Knowing readers love touring neighbours’ homes, we take you to Leamington, where empty nesters and their designers have been renovating for eight years, with beautiful results. Charity begins at home - or hometown, in the case of philanthropist Al Quesnel. At recent fundraising galas hosted by Transition to Betterness and In Honour of the Ones We Love, organizers were flabbergasted when Al supported each charity with a $500,000 donation. Patients making their temporary home at Windsor Regional Hospital may be greeted by Jack the German shepherd, who alternates playing with kids in the paediatric unit with padding through WRH, sniffing out illegal drugs carried by patients and visitors. Carol Garant, Windsor Life’s creative director, was also in hospital last summer, after a colon cancer diagnosis. Dr. Brett Howe’s timely surgery saved her life. Patient and surgeon share their thoughts on colorectal cancer screening. Happy memories of being in the kitchen with her German-Canadian grandmother are cherished by Jasmine Jasey, who reveals family recipes in our Look Who’s Cooking at Home feature. European flavours permeate my own family’s winter travel adventures in Portugal. Driving ATVs through fragrant groves of almond, orange and lemon trees was a highlight. Juggling touring, hardrock band Löve Razër, fronted by Leamington’s Bruce DeBacker, is launching their new album, “Border City Rebels,” in April. A-list rock stars and their bands traveling the globe are playing custom guitars built by Phil Culleton in Windsor. Back at home, Marty Gervais’s new book, ‘Five Days Walking Five Towns,’ invites us on his engaging walking tour of the communities that formed Windsor. As new Olympic legends are celebrated, gymnast Nadia Comaneci, mega-medal winner for Romania at the 1976 and 1980 Olympic Games, travelled here to address the Windsor Essex County Sports Persons of the Year event on Mar. 20. Happy reading!

Consider Gifting your Assets as Part of Estate Plan Many people have discovered that gifting assets while they are still alive is a valuable estate planning technique for passing wealth on to their adult children. One of the most important benefits of making a gift - which can be defined as a voluntary transfer of property to another made without an expectation of anything in return - is that the act could reduce the overall tax burden of your estate. On the day you die, the government will deem all of your assets to have been sold at "fair market value," assuming you are not leaving them to your spouse or common-law partner. As a result, you could have substantial capital gains in that one year, pushing you into a higher tax bracket on your final return, with the gains taxed accordingly. If the assets are gifted over a number of years, capital gains taxation may still be applicable, but it could occur within a lower tax bracket, meaning you may pay less tax. Keep in mind that gifts of cash do not give rise to any taxes at the time of the gift. In addition, gifting your assets to your adult children can help minimize the size of your estate. This could potentially lower probate, executor and legal fees. But perhaps the most important advantage of all is that you get the satisfaction of seeing your gift help your children while you are still alive. To make a gift legally enforceable, there must be evidence of the gift giver's intention to make a gift, as well as a physical act to demonstrate that intention. For example, if you would like to give a coin collection to your son, you could make it legally binding by making an oral declaration that it is being given as a gift. You would then physically hand it to him. However, to avoid any legal disputes about intention after you die, it is wisest to create a legal document to accompany the act of gifting, such as a gift deed or declaration. A gift is presumed to be final, with all rights of ownership transferred to the beneficiary. If you want to retain some form of control over the gift, the creation of a trust is an option you may want to consider. You could ensure that when you die, full ownership rights would pass to your child by way of the trust document. There is much to consider in transferring wealth to your adult children - and estate planning in general - so make sure you consult with your financial advisor*, along with a tax or legal professional, to determine what's best for you. STAYING TRUE TO THE VISION DURING RENOVATING YEARS STORY BY KAREN PATON-EVANS PHOTOGRAPHY BY MICHAEL PIETRANGELO

LEARNING TO PACE THEMSELVES has been the most important wisdom one Leamington couple has gained during eight years of home renovations. They bought their one-floor ranch 16 years ago, appreciating its high ceilings and wide hallways while accepting the décor would require work eventually. Eight years later, the couple started by tackling the kitchen. “I kept putting my husband off because the kitchen is the heart of the home,” the wife says. “Every year since, we have done at least one more room.” Whenever living in a construction zone begins wearing them out, the couple takes a break. Helping them stay sane throughout the lengthy process is another couple, designers Stephanie Harrington-O’Neill and Tim O’Neill, partners in life and in O’Neill-Harrington Interiors. The homeowners find it useful to get the male and female point of view regarding design. “Although I know what I like,” the lady of the house says, “the designers give me confidence and reassurance in my decisions.” On Stephanie’s first tour of the house, she thought the dining room needed immediate attention. However, its reinvention was pushed back until finally, the dining room was addressed last year. A priority was replacing the original golden oak floors, mouldings and cabinetry that dominated the house. New, rich cherry wood was installed throughout to provide a classic foundation. While the couple takes note of emerging styles and colours, the empty nesters want interiors that are “more timeless than trendy” for their traditional forever home. “This is what we like. This is home,” says the wife.

Above: In a remodeled Leamington house, custom-built cherry wood cabinetry and granite countertops set the stage for wonderful meals. Handmade glass tiles from California form the backsplash. The island’s generous proportions accommodate racks of cooling cookies, a built-in wine fridge and a microwave that glides out like a drawer for easy access. Right: A talented, enthusiastic home cook, the wife adores her Wolf gas stove. The double oven is ideal for making large meals for visiting family and friends; the small oven is used to cook dinner for two.

Brown Custom Cabinet of Leamington was engaged to turn cherry wood into raised panel cabinetry accented by columns. To preserve counterspace, the cabinetmakers built the wine fridge and microwave into the island. The press of a button causes the microwave to slide out like a drawer for easy access. While the cabinetmakers’ skill almost steals the show, the wife insists, “I did my whole kitchen around my Wolf stove. It’s the most important thing!” Stephanie quickly realized that was the case. “Every time I come over, there is something amazing cooking or baking,” she says. “Monday is pasta night for the whole family. Everyone has their favourite, so my client makes four different kinds of lasagne.” Reconfiguring the kitchen’s footprint meant that “without adding square footage, we got so much more space,” the wife observes. Acknowledging open plan kitchens and great rooms are in demand right now, she says, “I didn’t want wide open spaces because sounds bounce and echo.” Everywhere, masculine lines are successfully balanced with feminine touches, as evident in two adjacent rooms: Her living room and his media room. The shared colour palette of champagne, brown and black imbues the formal spaces with a cozy feel. The flames of a natural gas fire are framed by the custom mantel carved from cherry wood. The cabinetmakers used more cherry wood, stained brown, to create

Tile patterned to replicate hardwood makes the floor splash proof; the husband’s domain is the media room with a big screen TV at one end and a wet bar at the other. Brown leather power recliners are designed for home theatre comfort.

raised panels gracing the walls, as well as deep mouldings dressing the perimeter of the cove ceiling. Harold Wiens meticulously installed the woodwork. “It’s spectacular to see all the paneling. The effect is not dark, it’s warm,” Stephanie observes. Carved cherry wood continues in the media room, forming the home theatre cabinetry and the wet bar, where the host enjoys pouring beverages for guests. Two large stainless steel fridges keep libations chilled. The coffered ceiling over the bar is clad in cherry wood and punctuated with recessed lighting. In the tradition of good bars, an antiqued mirror covers the back wall. Maintaining the spirit of the wood floors while anticipating potential spills, the designers and homeowners agreed on a woodgrained floor tile for the bar area and media room. “That end of the house used to feel cooler. It’s amazing that with new in-floor heating, the furnace doesn’t run as much,” the wife notes. After dinner, the hubby retreats to his room and claims one of the brown leather home theatre power recliners to read and watch the news. A big button-tufted ottoman stands in for a coffee table - a much softer and safer choice bought with the couple’s young granddaughter in mind. The wife likes to curl up with a book on her brown leather sofa. During the holiday season, in the soft light of the Christmas tree, her room becomes a giftwrapping centre. In 2017, at long last, Stephanie got her hands on the dining room. “From Day One, I thought, ‘That glass block wall has got to go,’” she recalls. In its place are now gorgeous glass panels custom-made by artisan Kim Gene of Kabuki Design and Art Glass in Windsor. The smoky leaded glass rippling with varying textures obscures the view of the kitchen. On another wall, three large mirrors visually expand the dining room and reflect the light of delicate chandeliers formed with curved prisms. Moulding detail was added to the ceiling. Believing there is already enough wood on the walls throughout the house, the designers painted the dining room champagne. The homeowners donated their old dining furniture to their church and then went shopping. “All I wanted was a long table and 10 chairs,” says the wife. The champagne fabric and dark wood framed chairs combine elegance with comfort, ideal

for leisurely dinners. The uncluttered arrangement of new furnishings permits guests to move around the room with ease. Mobility is certainly a consideration for the couple as they proactively plan for aging in their forever home. When they recently remodelled their master bathroom, they had one wall removed to accommodate a new larger walk-in shower, making certain that an extra-wide door was set into the glass walls. Practicalities do not overshadow little luxuries, however. The wife replaced a big whirlpool tub with a romantic vintage-style white tub standing on chrome claw-feet. White silhouette blinds covering the bay windows provide a soft backdrop and privacy for the lady’s nightly bath. “My granddaughter, who is three, loves that bath, too,” she says. The master bedroom was redone with new linens and suede walls in a pale olivegold tone. Two additional bathrooms also received makeovers. In contrast to the quiet colour scheme unifying the house, the homeowner splashed out in the powder room, retaining the original red damask wallpaper. A new custom vanity was built and topped with boldly veined reddishbrown granite. “I find with renovating, you see how dated the other rooms are. Where do you stop? When it’s done!” says the wife. “My husband got the ball rolling and keeps it moving.” The designers smile whenever the homeowners call after a remodeling hiatus. “It’s fun to get back and do other things to this evolving house,” Stephanie says. Thinking of the clients’ enthusiasm, Tim adds, “It’s like a Christmas gift for us.” Mentally rolling up her sleeves for 2018’s to do to list, the wife has plans for the pool house and the two remaining bathrooms not yet redecorated. “After that, I quit!” she laughs. “Hang on...the laundry room needs done, too.” WLM

ESSEX APPLIANCE CENTRE LTD.

Advanced Technology Just Made Household Chores Faster and Easier THE NEW LINEUP OF HOME APPLIANCE is going beyond the call of duty, anticipating the little accidents, absentmindedness and irritations that we all experience. Forgot to take the laundry out of the dryer and now your shirts or sheets are wrinkled? “No problem,” says Chris Stevens of Essex Appliance Centre. “Touch the steam cycle and a few minutes later, the fabric is smooth and ready to show off.” Thought you had loaded all the dirty dark laundry into the washer but just found the jeans you want to wear tomorrow in a heap on the floor? “Samsung’s ‘add wash’ feature allows you to add a garment through the door within the door,” Chris says. These are only a couple ways that appliance design and technology are taking the hassle out of household chores. Anyone routinely loading a dishwasher has probably thought of ideas to improve it. “Frigidaire listened and came through with OrbitClean spray arms that provide far more water coverage than most dishwashers. The spray arm blasts off baked on debris, as well,” says Chris. “People have been going crazy for induction cooking appliances,” Chris notes. “Induction cooks four times faster than gas, saving time and energy. It can boil water in 90 seconds.” The elements on an induction cooktop or stove use an electromagnetic field, rather than radiant heat, as with traditional cooktops. “The element doesn’t generate the heat, the pot does,” Chris says. “To check if your existing cookware will work on an induction stove, hold a magnet over the bottom of each pot. If the magnet sticks, the pot will work.” He points out, “Many manufacturers are giving a free set of pots with the purchase of a new induction stove.” Two is better than one when it comes to ovens. In place of the old built-in double wall oven concept, appliance makers have designed stoves with a double oven. “You can cook two meals at different temperatures at the same time,” Chris says. “Our customers tell us that most of the time, they don’t need the capacity of a big oven,” he observes. With a double oven, if pizza is on the menu, just the upper half is turned on, cutting energy consumption. “There is less fluctuation of the temperature as the four corners are closer in a small oven.” To maximize oven space, Samsung has created its Flex Duo oven. “It is equipped with a removable sheet that divides the one large oven into two small ovens whenever you want two baking or roasting zones,” Chris explains. As one large oven, the Samsung Flex Duo can bake several racks of cookies simultaneously. “At Thanksgiving, go ahead and buy the big turkey. The oven can accommodate it,” Chris says. “The built-in probe lets you monitor the temperature so the meat will be perfectly cooked.” Another Samsung product fascinates people of all ages when they are browsing Essex Appliance Centre. The Family Hub fridge has a 21.5-inch tablet on its door that lets the family watch TV, go on the Internet, post digital memos, share a calendar and find recipes.

26

W i n d s o r

L i f e

“It has a camera monitoring the inside of the fridge. You’ll be notified before food goes bad,” Chris says. Keeping track of items needing replaced, the fridge uses an app to compile a grocery list. “Click the screen for current store flyers to find the best deals,” says Chris. Esthetics are as important as technology and dependability to homeowners. White and black kitchen appliances are trailing in popularity. “Stainless steel refrigerators, stoves, cooktops, hoods and dishwashers continue to lead,” Chris finds. “Black stainless steel has taken right off. It’s a tinted finish on stainless, which it isn’t so commercial looking.” Maytag and Frigidaire manufacture appliances with a coveted blemish proof finish that makes them resistant to fingerprints. Innovations in washers and dryers mean people can spend less time in the laundry room. Samsung and LG have both made direct drive motors a standard feature of their front load washers. “Before, that quality of motor was only found in upper tier washers,” Chris observes. “A direct drive motor spins faster than the traditional belt drive motor, thoroughly wringing out the clothes and shaving off many minutes in the dryer.” Some machines now have a small wash tub built into the top of the washer for pre-treating stained clothing. Washers with a steam cycle eliminate stains, dirt, pet dander and many household allergens. “Steam dryers are great for removing wrinkles and dog hair. Instead of washing lightly worn clothing, just refresh it in the steam dryer for a second day’s use,” Chris says. Essex Appliance Centre’s knowledgeable, experienced salespeople are on hand to explain the features of the many appliances displayed in over 12,000 square feet of showroom space and stocked in 15,000 square feet of warehouse. From budget friendly Amana to luxury Thermador and Sub-Zero, owners Gord and Cathy Stevens keep prices low with their warehouse style approach. The independent, family business has its own service department and provides free delivery to Windsor-Essex and Kent County homes. Chris says, “We’ve built our business by taking care of our customers for over 30 years.”

He sees beyond the act of adding one more townhome or executive house to a street; Ezio appreciates that he is growing a neighbourhood and contributing to the future architectural heritage of the community. Even so, the firm’s 42-year-old president appreciates that building superior homes actually comes down to old fashioned courtesy and the willingness to get to know clients and their hopes. “I listen carefully to what people want. I only hire architects and designers who have the skills and passion to create plans for the homes my clients desire,” he says. “Our commitment to only the highest standards means our partners must comply with our quality policy, our corporate philosophy and all budgets and timelines.” BREAKING GROUND, SURPASSING BENCHMARKS Once ground is broken, everyone working on the Gintar Homes projects adheres to Ezio’s rigorous building requirements. The entire team knows his attention to detail is immaculate, and that everything Ezio does revolves around customer satisfaction. While Gintar Homes has won many awards for its design, construction and customer care, Ezio judges his team’s efforts by the compliments delighted clients share after moving into their new homes. “It means a great deal to me to know that the work I love doing is recognized as exceptional by my own community and professional peers and especially by our clients,” Ezio says. THE GRAND FINALE AT SEVEN LAKES LASALLE For the past several years, Gintar Homes’ workmanship has been on view with the construction of each Grand Townhome or Single Family home at Seven Lakes LaSalle. The last phase of the development is now available with the creation of The Grand Finale, a unique and exclusive neighbourhood on Whispering Pines Crescent, a new, private non-throughfare. Many of The Grand Finale’s 24 lots back onto the Seven Lakes Championship Golf Course. Several custom homes are already contracted in this exclusive enclave. “This is the last opportunity to have a new Grand Townhouse or Executive Single Family residence custom-built to your tastes in Seven Lakes LaSalle,” Ezio says.

The community’s architectural attributes are enhanced by the wonderful natural setting and the manicured grounds of the 18-hole golf course. Surrounded by green spaces, residents are drawn outdoors to enjoy walking, golfing, strolling to the clubhouse for year-round activities and simply breathing the fresh air. HEALTHY HOME LIVING Designing a relaxing and inviting home that appeals to both men and women is essential to a healthy environment. “Uniting the outdoors with the indoors by using natural finishes such as wood, stone and plant material creates a peaceful space that everyone will love to retreat to daily,” Ezio finds. A leader in airtightness, similar to R-2000, he is sensitive to the home’s function and longevity. “Done properly, airtightness saves energy. Stopping Airflow can prevent damaging condensation inside enclosed walls, protecting the home from destructive rot,” Ezio explains. “These important considerations can be blended seamlessly into the home’s design. You can feel secure about living in a Gintarbuilt residence.” TURNKEY SERVICES As the general contractor, Gintar Homes is a complete turnkey solution provider. “Our full-service approach keeps me at the helm of every project,” says Ezio. The contractor takes extreme care in selecting partners to ensure the level of quality and attention to detail Ezio demands is met, with no exceptions. “We must exceed the expectations of our clients and we expect nothing less of our partnered companies.” He adds, “Our above-standard service and warranties also contribute to our homeowners’ peace of mind.” “I have been in this business long enough to know that a contractor’s work must stand the test of time. Construction shortcuts, inferior materials and inexperienced workmanship all become apparent before the final coat of paint is dry,” Ezio says. “My contractor partners and my clients know that I won’t accept anything less than the best results on my job sites.” BUILDING ARCHITECTURE WITH CHARACTER Understanding what works, Ezio has the experience and expertise to make a home truly special. “I really enjoy seeing my clients’ pleasure when they realize they can indeed have a stunning feature wall, ceiling details, wainscoting, niches to showcase their artwork, an impressive wine cellar or a dressing room that is outfitted like a high-end boutique. Their excitement is infectious!” he says. “As a custom homebuilder, I’m comfortable revising architectural plans several times to suit my clients’ evolving vision of what they want their home to be.” DETAIL IS PERSONAL Ezio freely admits he’s a mega micromanager, so it suits the president of Gintar Homes just fine that his head office is located right beside his construction site. “We literally stay on top of our projects. When we’re not on the construction site directing and examining the work being done, we’re micromanaging every detail from next door.” Attention to detail is something Ezio takes “very personally and very seriously.” “It comes from extensive, specialized experience in all facets of construction,” he explains. “Luxury homes demand a high level of detail because you’re catering to a detail-oriented clientele. They want to have exceptional value, craftsmanship and quality. And that’s something that resonates with me.”

Pharmacist/Owner Kristy Osborne:

Taking Care of Her Belle River Neighbours

“This feels like coming home,”

says Kristy Osborne, a pharmacist, wife, mom and community supporter who just took ownership of the Shoppers Drug Mart store in Belle River. Residing in Lakeshore for nearly 10 years now, Kristy recently relinquished ownership of a West Windsor Shoppers Drug Mart to focus on the Belle River store. “I live right in the neighbourhood with my husband and three young kids. We moved to Belle River because it’s a close-knit, up-and-coming community. It’s a great area to be with a growing family,” Kristy says. When Shoppers Drug Mart customers encounter her in the store, they are pleased to recognize their new pharmacist as someone they’ve already seen at local businesses, baseball and hockey games, tae kwon do and Lakeshore Academy of Fine Arts. Appreciating how much people depend on Shoppers Drug Mart and its pharmacy team, Kristy immediately applied her 15 years of experience as a pharmacist to build on the good work of Wilf Fortowsky, who served Lakeshore as the Shoppers Drug Mart Pharmacist/Owner for more than 30 years before retiring. “Wilf has done a lot for this community. I intend to maintain his excellent level of service,” says Kristy. “Customers are being assisted by the same friendly staff they know and trust.” “With the help of my team and community partners, we are expanding the services provided at this store,” Kristy says. The pharmacy is now administering vaccines required for travel; offering smoking cessation programs; and engaging with patients

in diabetes management. “Through our digital prescription refill management, we are texting and emailing customers with reminders that refills are due. We also plan to collaborate with the VON nurse practitioner and dietician who lead clinics upstairs.” Committed to the health of children, teens and young adults, Kristy applauds the launch of OHIP+. The government health benefits program automatically covers the cost of thousands of drug products for Ontario residents age 24 years and younger. “Many kids are on multiple medications for the treatment of allergies, asthma, ADHD and other conditions,” Kristy notes. “I encourage families to have a discussion with me. We can review their children’s medication, ensure different prescriptions are interacting well and determine the best times for taking doses. I’m available to answer questions and help active, growing kids be healthy.” Meeting with the pharmacist for one-onone reviews of their medications is a smart move for adults, also. “At the very least, we can coordinate the timing of your prescription refills to minimize pickups,” Kristy says. Believing in the value of education, she welcomes invitations from local schools to talk with classes about health-related issues. Kristy, who graduated from the University of Toronto with a Pharmacy degree, will gladly speak with students at school or in the pharmacy. People of all ages can take advantage of free opportunities to learn about wellness at health information events hosted by the Belle River Shoppers Drug Mart in its meeting room upstairs. Topics covered at upcoming sessions include managing diabetes during the flu season and dealing with spring allergies. Settling into the Belle River store, Kristy enjoyed meeting hundreds of people during Customer Appreciation Day on Feb. 17. Scoring goody bags and PC Optimum prizes, customers ate cake and healthy treats from local stores; connected with the fitness club and wellness businesses in community; and discussed nutrition and healthy living with pharmacists. Kristy says, “Together, we are partnering in residents’ best health.”

Generosity of a Great Community STORY BY KIM WILLIS

A Nearly Two Million Dollar Charity Week as Galas Raise Record Amounts

TRANSITION TO BETTERNESS AND IN HONOUR OF THE ONES WE LOVE host two of Windsor’s largest, most elegant charity galas. 2018 was particularly spectacular with both groups raising record amounts. On January 27 Transition to Betterness (T2B) held their 21st annual gala at Caesars Windsor. Thanks to the generosity of the community, T2B was set to announce a record-setting fundraising total that evening. Then philanthropist Al Quesnel showed up. He donated $500,000 bringing their fundraising total to over $1 million! “Words cannot describe our sincere gratitude. All we can say is that Al made Gala 21 a night that no one will forget, and that his gift will provide so much comfort to those in our community. We remain speechless, and baffled by the incredible generosity that has been shown to us by this community. We are gifted to live in Windsor-Essex County, and know there is no place else that supports their own, the way you all do consistently,” said Amber Hunter, Executive Director, T2B. T2B is a local community organization dedicated to providing comfort for those impacted by a life-altering illness. They have raised millions of

dollars in support of projects that bring comforts to patients and their families. This includes everything from the renovation of hospital rooms to the ongoing Back Pack program that provides a bag of toys to oncology patients during treatment. One week later, on February 3, In Honour of the Ones We Love (In Honour) held their gala at the Ciociaro Club. Founder, Anita Imperioli, was approached by one of the bartenders who said a man wanted to speak with her. Quesnel had shown up unexpectedly with a $500,000 cheque. Combined with funds from the gala, $850,000 was raised. “It’s absolutely amazing,” said Imperioli. “These funds will make a huge difference in the community. We can continue to fund our ongoing programs and look at other ways we can support patient care in this community.” In Honour was founded in 1997 with a mission of supporting cancer patient care in this community. While they continue to support programs and services that support cancer patients, such as their Kids Beating Cancer program, they have expanded their scope in recent years. This includes a $185,000 donation to the Ronald McDonald House Windsor and $600,000 in support of an accessible playground at the John McGivney Children’s Centre. When presenting the cheque to Imperioli, Quesnel simply said that he believed in the good work that the organization was doing. It was the largest single donation that both organizations had received. Quesnel did donate $100,000 to In Honour a few years ago. Quesnel established the Alan Quesnel Family Foundation in 2014 after the sale of his chain of athletic clubs. He has spread his wealth both locally and internationally including work in Haiti and Africa. He also indicated that the donations to T2B and In Honour were last minute decisions. Locally Quesnel has donated over $6 million to various projects including $2.5 million to restore St. Anne’s church in Tecumseh, $1 million to the Downtown Mission and $200,000 to Harmony in Action, $300,000 to the Windsor Residence for Young Men, $250,000 to Kiwanis Sunshine Point Camp and Camp Brombal and $100,000 to the Canadian Mental Health Association and countless others. Quesnel stated, “Life’s short and if you can help people that need it, then you help them.” WLM

Introducing a New Division: Automated Entrance Systems (AES)

Eric LaMarre (Owner)

BAY-VIEW GLASS & MIRROR LTD. services all makes and models of automatic doors, from your standard push button operators to high energy fully automatic doors. Providing power assisted doors, automatic folding doors and more, the Windsor-based company is also the sole distributer of Nabco/Gyrotech operators for southwestern Ontario. “Our power-assisted doors automatically slide open and close with reliability. Nabco operators have been tested and proved reliable to over 900,000 operations, three times the industry standard. Safe and convenient, automatic doors make customers feel welcome and help staff work more efficiently in stores, office buildings, medical facilities and airports,” says Eric LaMarre, whose father, Al, founded Bay-View Glass & Mirror 31 years ago. By recently establishing Automated Entrance Systems, a new dedicated division of Bay-View Glass & Mirror, the company now offers a large collection of entrance doors, convenience drive-through windows and other solutions, made to size and then professionally installed by AES’ own team. “We are one, if not the only, local company that is certified by the American Association of Automatic Door Manufacturers. AAADM certification means we have the training and credentials to install and inspect all makes and models of automated doors in accordance with current industry standards, ensuring

safe operation,” Eric says. “So even if you did not purchase your doors from us, we can service them and do annual inspections. Our 24-hour service is appreciated by owners and managers.” “The building code is changing with the new Canadian Accessibility Act. Considering that one in seven Canadians has a disability, it’s critical that buildings can be easily accessed by everyone,” Eric points out. “Many people don’t know what the compliance requirements are to retrofit their existing facilities or build new ones. Count on our team to clear up the confusion, install exactly what you need and make certain the job is done correctly.” “We have been helping companies get compliant to the new codes by replacing old buttons that are no longer compliant or updating a universal washroom to meet the new requirements,” Eric explains. “We specialize in the new bathroom packages that are required in a fully accessible designation.” Accessibility should be factored into every construction undertaking. Homeowners who want to age safely in their forever homes hire Bay-View to replace their bathtub with a custom glass Euro style walk-in shower. After listening to clients’ concerns, Eric designed a barrier free accessible shower with large glass panels and no curb. The glass door rolls to the side, providing a wide opening that enables a wheelchair or walker to glide in. He says, “Our grab bars resemble high-end towels bars, so even if you don’t have mobility issues now, the shower is properly equipped should there be need.” Bay-View also crafts frameless glass shower enclosures that have minimal metal supports for a modern, open look. For people who prefer the barn door style of hardware, the Serenity Slider glass shower delivers. Eric assures, “We can service our clients, whatever they need.”

Timely Testing

STORY BY KAREN PATON-EVANS

Screening Options for Detecting Colorectal Cancer

Dr. Brett Howe performed successful laparoscopic colon cancer surgery on Windsor Life Magazine’s Carol Garant-Robinson.

MORE THAN CHICKEN AND POTATO SALAD were shared at a life-changing family reunion in 2016. Making certain to get everyone’s attention, Uncle Larry Donais recounted the family’s health history, numbering the many relatives who had already or were now battling colon cancer. He gave a passionate plea to his relations, urging them to get colonoscopies. Heeding her uncle’s message, Kim relayed his request to her sister, Carol GarantRobinson, who was unable to attend the reunion that year. Carol had long been aware of her family’s history of breast, prostate and bone cancers: Her mother died of breast cancer and numerous aunts and uncles had various cancers. However, Carol did not realize colon cancer was so prevalent. She had been diligent about getting routine mammograms and PAP tests throughout adulthood. In 2010 at age 60, Carol did her first free fecal occult blood test (FOBT) for colorectal cancer screening. It was a matter of collecting a daily fecal smear at home for three days and then bringing them to a medical lab in Windsor. To her relief, the test results came back negative. With her uncle’s revelation fresh in her mind, Carol readily complied when her family doctor handed her another FOBT kit at her yearly physical in June 2017. “Since my previous screening was negative, I thought this test would be sufficient,” she says. Per routine, she completed the test and submitted it to a lab.

44

W i n d s o r

L i f e

This time, the test results were abnormal. A trip to the family physician resulted in a colonoscopy being ordered. Dr. Wassim ElZubeidi performed the colonoscopy at Southern Ontario Endoscopy in Windsor on July 6. Immediately, Dr. El-Zubeidi informed Carol that he had found something and would put her on an urgent list to see a surgeon. Carol had colon cancer, which was beyond the polyp stage but appeared to be still in the early stage. Colon cancer is cancer of the large bowel (colon), which is the lower part of the digestive system. Rectal cancer is cancer of the last six inches of the colon. Together, they are referred to as colorectal cancer. It is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in Ontario. In 2015, an estimated 9,200 residents were diagnosed with colorectal cancer and 3,350 Ontarians died from the disease. “When I asked Doctor El-Zubeidi about the reliability of FOBT, he indicated that it is an imperfect test that may detect the patient already has cancer or may give a false result. It can’t determine pre-cancer signs such as benign polyps,” Carol says. While she waited for a date with the surgeon, Carol hosted family gatherings so she and family members could spend some time with her brother, Ken, who was fighting pancreatic cancer. Seeing him struggle brought home the suffering that cancer can cause to patients and the people who love them. At that time, Carol, who is Windsor Life’s creative director, asked her husband, the magazine’s publisher Bob Robinson, to keep quiet their fears about the family legacy of cancer active in her cells. On July 18, Carol met with general colorectal surgeon Dr. Brett Howe, who scheduled surgery. Appreciating the diagnosis came out of the blue for Carol, Dr. Howe notes, “For a lot of people, it does, unfortunately.” The surgeon reassured Carol, saying that although all cancers are serious, it appeared that hers was detected early. Colon cancers are often slow growing and when caught at stage 1, there is a 90% chance the patient can be cured. Fiveyear survival rates for stage 2 colon cancer are 63-87%; stage 3 are 53-89%. “With stage one colon cancer, the chance of recurrence is in the single digits,” Dr. Howe says. “Almost all colon cancers inevitably will require surgery at some point” to remove the cancer and obstructions. As Ken celebrated his last birthday with his brothers in Niagara Falls on Aug. 17, Carol spent four life-saving hours with Dr. Howe, who performed laparoscopic surgery to remove the entire right side of her colon. Carol was home on Aug. 20. Laparoscopic

Knowing the insidiousness of the disease, how best to test for colon cancer in people not presenting symptoms “is a debate within the medical community,” says Dr. Howe. “There is fairly good provincial mandated screening for colon cancer,” he says, “testing people who have no symptoms whatsoever.” Cancer Care Ontario, operated through the Ontario Ministry of Health, “basically decides how cancer is treated within our province and where funds are going to be allocated to treat it…With regards to colon cancer, currently in our province, it’s recommended by that body that average risk people with no family history of colon cancer use an FOBT every two years starting after age 50.” In the coming months, Cancer Care Ontario is transitioning from the FOBT to the fecal immunochemical test (FIT) as part of the colorectal cancer screening program, ColonCancerCheck. Considered more patient-friendly, FIT calls for only one stool sample, whereas the FOBT requires three stool samples. Dr. Howe believes, “It enables more people to do the test and that is perceived to be a good thing.” There is a thought that “FIT is better at detecting colon cancer when compared to

the FOBT,” says Dr. Howe. “FIT is also useful in detecting bigger polyps that need to be treated.” “Any test we do in medicine, nothing is perfect,” he thinks. “FOBT wasn’t necessarily a great test but it was cheap, fairly easy to administer, and was non-invasive.” As a surgeon who performs colonoscopies and colon cancer surgeries, “I’m a big advocate for colonoscopy,” Dr. Howe says. In the U.S., colonoscopies are common just for screenings. “Cancer Care Ontario does not recommend screening colonoscopies for average risk patients,” he points out, adding he accepts many referrals for that purpose. Whether a person is sent for the procedure is “very dependent on a number of factors including patient education on colonoscopies and your willingness to undergo the procedure.” When deciding to perform colonoscopies on his own patients, Dr. Howe bases roughly one-third of his determinations on screening results. Many colonoscopies are done because patients are over age 50. In Dr. Howe’s practice, “if you do have a positive FOBT, we generally try to get you in for a colonoscopy within three to six weeks,” inside the recommended timeline. “Personally, I prioritize any patient that I

surgery had shortened what was once weeks of recovery from traditional surgery into just days. On Aug. 24, Dr. Howe gave Carol and Bob the welcome news that no further treatment would be necessary. “Early detection had saved me,” she says. Bob recalls, “The next month was very hard on Carol. Except for her sisters and me, she had not told anyone, including other members of her family, of her cancer and subsequent surgery. Her early detection had done what it was supposed to but on the other hand, her brother was in his final days.” Although Ken’s pancreatic cancer was much harder to detect than colon, prostate or breast cancer, his signs had not been diagnosed until his condition was not treatable. Ken died last September never knowing about his sister’s cancer. After her cancer experience, Carol reflected and asked questions. “I learned that although none of my immediate family has had colon cancer, the fact that my aunts and uncles were affected should have been disclosed to my family doctor.” Through personal research, she also determined Uncle Larry was right: “At the time, I should have requested a colonoscopy, rather than just relying on the FOBT.”

receive a referral for a positive FOBT,” doing the colonoscopy within a couple of weeks, cancelling procedures for patients with less worrisome cases. “With the new FIT program, that’s all going to change. They are trying to standardize the approach across Ontario,” Dr. Howe says. Rather than the patient’s own doctor deciding if a colonoscopy is needed, in many instances, a patient with a positive FIT result will be referred to a FIT program. “The program itself inserts you into a clinic to get scoped,” he explains. “People will be getting colonoscopies in a quicker timeline.” “For the average person, I do recommend that everybody first and foremost partake in some sort of screening program. For the meantime, I do support FIT testing,” Dr. Howe says. “It’s supposed to be a very good test at finding colon cancer. It’s good at detecting any sort of lesions within the colon, not only cancer but bigger polyps.” The surgeon says, “When I do a colonoscopy I also remove a lot of polyps. No one can say definitively that removing polyps will reduce the rate of cancer. But we know that a minority of polyps, if they were left in place, would ultimately turn into a cancer 10, 15 years down the road.” “With FIT, you’re waiting for the cancer to actually develop and then deal with it. Using colonoscopy as a screening modality, you can theoretically prevent the cancer from even occurring in the first place. I think that’s probably one of the real advantages of colonoscopy.” “If you want to find a cancer, a colonoscopy is the undisputed superior test. It is the best test we have,” Dr. Howe says. “The issues with it are it’s expensive, it’s invasive with risks of complications, and access to it is limited in our system.” Recognizing “there would need to be a huge amount of infrastructure for routine colonoscopy,” he believes the effort is worthwhile. Since her brother’s passing, Carol has shared her own experience with family and now with Windsor Life readers. Her entire immediate family has given themselves and Uncle Larry peace of mind by getting colonoscopies. “Please, do the same. Although colon cancer more commonly occurs after age 50, it is also being diagnosed in people in their 20s, 30s and 40s,” says Carol. “The FOBT and the new FIT are not perfect, but they are painless, simple, save lives and in some cases, all that is offered,” she says. “A colonoscopy is far superior and if it’s available to you, I believe it would be to your benefit.” WLM

Expert Fireplace Design and Installation to Elevate Your Property’s Style and Warmth WHILE THE MAIN FUNCTION OF A FIREPLACE is to provide heat and warmth, it also has the potential to be a focal point in a home. It draws us together to work, play, and relax. The fireplace is where real life happens; it all starts here. Whether you are looking for an indoor or external fireplace, Scott’s Fireplace has proven itself to be a trusted, local choice for custom, quality design and workmanship since 1993. “We find that in many instances customers miss the opportunity to make the fireplace a focal point. There are so many options available today, we encourage customers to be creative,” says AJ Godwin, co-owner of the company. A fireplace can be the perfect place in a room to create an unexpected focal point. Whether it be lining the interior of the fireplace, seeking an unusual surrounding or throwing in unexpected shades of colour, there are unlimited possibilities to make it stand out. Whatever the desired outcome, there is no need to search outside of Windsor-Essex County for fire specializations. Scott’s Fireplace has the capabilities for any scope of design and installation. In addition, Scott’s Fireplace is a certified professional installer that many insurance companies require today. They are one of three installers in the area between Windsor and London that hold the professional standards of WETT certification. “We work with you to develop the vision and then bring it to reality,” says AJ. “Increasingly customers appreciate that we are a local company

that offers one-stop shopping. We take care of everything from installation, framing and wall coverings.” A complete fireplace project entails a full scope of knowledge and experience regarding proper installation of the right equipment suited to each situation and the proper attention to detail of the surroundings to fit the integrity of the entire space. For more complex projects Scott’s Fireplace makes the process stress-free for the customer. “From design to installation, we take full control of the project, there is no contracting out,” says AJ. Scott’s also has extensive experience with commercial presentation of fireplaces. In many instances these pieces make exclusive statements that are showcased in lobbies, boardroom, banquet halls and dining areas. The staff at Scott’s Fireplace have a wealth of knowledge and experience. They take great pride in helping customers with little or no knowledge on how to select a fire feature for indoors or outdoors. Their greatest satisfaction comes from educating customers about available options. No matter the purpose, fire features create instant warmth and atmosphere. Customers are encouraged to visit Scott’s Fireplace showroom to view their collection. They have many incredible looks and styles that are ready for installation. Whether you check out Scotts Fireplace in person or online, you will be confident that they push the boundaries beyond traditional ideas. Bring them your vision and they will do their best to make it happen. They also offer free estimates. Their showroom is located in the Home Gallery on Manning Road at County Road 46. Sales Representative, Jules (left) and Owner Richard Kehl display the Colour by Nature wood stained vinyl custom casement window.

When You Buy Kehl ...You Buy Factory-Direct More than just an assembler and supplier, Kehl Windows and Doors designs and manufactures its own products locally in Harrow, including vinyl and hybrid energy-efficient window systems that owner Richard Kehl has developed over 25 years. He says, “By meeting personally with our clients, we have been able to respond to their needs with custom-made solutions.” Supplying and installing products for renovation, new construction and commercial projects, Richard says, “We are the only manufacturer in Windsor-Essex County to have Window Wise Installation Certification and have been awarded Energy Star Canada’s Most Efficient Product for 10 years.” Being NFRC and Energy Star Certified differs from being a window dealer. “We have to test our products and insulated glass every three years and are audited four times yearly to ensure we’re fabricating the product as tested. This process is similar to ISO certification where quality is continually monitored.” Ideas for building better windows and doors first occurred to Richard during the years he worked at Kehl Construction, owned by his father, Konrad Kehl Jr. After acquiring window-making machinery in 1999, Richard put his concepts to work. “What is unique about our window and

Owner Richard Kehl presents his new custom designed fire safe window.

door system is that it can be put together like a building block set: Windows, entry doors and sliding doors can be coupled together to form walls of glass,” he explains. “Our state-of-the-art reinforcement system doesn’t require any wood framing for structural support.”

Every award that Kehl Windows and Doors had received for its intelligent, efficient solutions has provided motivation to perfect its next innovation. For 2018, Richard has just launched four new collections created with local buildings in mind. One exciting introduction is Kehl’s no-rot entrance and sliding door systems, made without wood. “They are fabricated with vinyl and composites which can be shaped and processed to any custom size,” says Richard. Also new is Kehl’s fire escape hatch basement window which meets all building codes for egress. A large pull handle assists with easy access for entering and exiting. The window swings inward like a door, avoiding obstructions outside. Complete with Kehl’s ONE screen system, it can be custom-sized and finished in 30 standard or custom colours.

“We shopped at a lot of window companies. Kehl Window and Door gave us the most peace of mind, not only in the product, but service and installation too.” — Bob & Julia

“Kehl Windows just installed. Great people, great work, great quality. I would recommend them to anyone.” — Dave

4-point welder exclusive to Kehl Windows and Doors

Designers and homeowners are loving Kehl’s new Colour by Nature staining system, allowing all Kehl products to be stained to complement the building’s existing trim and millwork. “This is not a laminate or film - we actually stain the vinyl in-house,” Richard assures. With Kehl’s all-in-one system, vinyl interior and exterior adaptors fit wall cavity depths and interior/exterior measurements of every size. “Since our windows and doors are custom-fabricated, all molding is pre-cut in our plant for optimization and quality. We only use durable vinyl – never metal – to complete back jambs and other spaces,” Richard says. Insulated glass is made in-house with the thermax Xl system, which uses a metal-free warm edge spacer system and two coats of silver low emittance glass. “It produces one of the most energy efficient units on the market,” Richard notes. “We keep your window measurements in our database, so replacement is a snap if glass gets broken.” As the local, factory-direct manufacturer of high-end windows, doors and insulated glass, Kehl Windows and Doors has total control over its quality, value, installation and guarantee. Richard says, “You can depend on 100% coverage on all Kehl parts, workmanship and labour. Our warranties are lifetime for the home owner, transferrable and non-prorated.”

Phil Culleton Supplying Premier Guitar Players with Top-Notch Gear STORY BY DICK HILDEBRAND

TO SAY THAT PHIL CULLETON IS A BUSY MAN is an understatement. During the day he’s an automotive technician for the city of Windsor…a job he’s held for the past 20 years. At night and during many of his spare hours, he’s an accomplished guitar builder. He grew up in Windsor, attended Brennan High School for three years and completed fourth year at Herman Collegiate. After signing up as an automotive mechanic apprentice, he worked for a number of racing teams including Chip Ganassi and Stewart Racing which featured talented drivers like Gil DeFerren and Robbie Gordon before returning to Windsor where he applied for, and got the job he still holds today. He’s married to Patti and the couple has two daughters, Sarah and Emily. The family lives in Tecumseh. As a kid Phil always wanted to be a guitar player, but as a left-hander he had trouble finding the right instrument. Eventually, through a friend, he found one at a pawn shop. It was a left-handed Fender Stratocaster with a rosewood fretboard which he bought and eventually traded in for another one with a maple fingerboard. Being the ultimate perfectionist, he slowly began modifying the guitar to his exact

specs. “I ended up making a new body,” he says, “which wasn’t perfect, so I made another one, which resulted in me basically creating my own guitar.” As his enterprise grew, so did his need for parts, many of which were not available at local music stores. He managed to contact Sheryl Crow’s guitar player who directed him to a parts source. The two met at DTE in Detroit where Crow’s band was touring with John Mayer, whose guitar tech and Phil became close friends. To this day they still consult with each other. The simple fact is that Phil has, over the years, been able to collaborate with the world’s guitar royalty and has successfully created instruments above and beyond their expectations. “These guys,” he says, “like the bread and butter guitars — but they have specific wants and needs which I’ve managed to supply.” Phil recently completed custom hand built guitars for the Guns N’ Roses ‘Not In This Lifetime Tour’ for 2017/2018. At the moment, Culleton is preparing several instruments for the heavy metal band’s upcoming tour and making others for the Bon Jovi tour. PSE Guitars have also been supplied to Aerosmith and the country bands of Kenny Chesney and Miranda Lambert. Over the last decade, Phil Culleton has evolved his business into making guitar cases, heavy-duty shipping cases and wardrobe cases. Ironically, most of the material for those cases comes from a factory in Oldcastle… “just a few minutes from my house,” as Phil likes to say. To get where he is today, Phil has had to learn a lot… “I had to learn how to properly paint the guitar, how to cut frets and install the frets — it was a mountain to learn this craft…unbelievable, like memorizing Chinese images. A guitar just isn’t a piece of wood and strings and I figured out how to make it better.” And thanks to Phil’s ingenuity, he’s never lost a sale to a player who ended up with a better guitar than he started out with, PSE guitars do not come off an assembly line — each one is built by hand and Phil does not cut corners. Bodies are cut with a band saw and an ordinary router is used to make the cavities for pickups, wiring and tremolo systems if required. Usually, solid body models are composed of two mirrorimaged pieces of wood which are glued together. While basswood is a popular choice, Phil says guitars can actually be made out of any type of wood. “I even built one out of plywood,” he says, “just to check stuff

and, believe it or not, it played great.” He’s convinced that, ultimately, the sound that comes out of a guitar depends on the player ...not the wood it’s made of, or its paint, or the electronic innards. In the end, it’s the player who decides the specifications for his new guitar, which Phil follows to the letter. Generally he buys pick-ups, bridges, tuning keys and other hardware from various sources, while players who have contracts with specific companies often send him the gear they want installed on their guitars. He does have one model where he makes all the hardware with the exception of the electronics. “It’s 100 percent mine,” he says. His manufacturing repertoire is quite large — he will custom create solid-body electrics, hollow-body electrics, acoustic electrics, acoustics, basses, and even ukuleles. There’s also the possibility that Phil could be crafting a cello for an artist, who needs the instrument by July of next year. In order to make the delivery deadline, work on the project would have to start in February. Once an order is placed, a custom built PSE guitar can be ready in 3 to 7 days if the finish is bare wood. “If you want the high gloss finish and beautiful colors on it, it can take up to 2 or 3 weeks because of the meticulous process required to give an instrument that windshield finish normally found on a car.” And, depending on the type of hardware requested by a player, the guitar’s delivery time could be delayed by several weeks until the parts arrive. Phil emphasizes that his part of the job will be done on time and buyers are free to stop by his shop to take a look. PSE guitars start at around $1000 and could soar up to $5000 or more, depending on what the player wants. The same care and quality goes into every instrument that leaves Phil’s Tecumseh shop and each guitar comes complete with a 100% lifetime warranty to the original owner. Of course, he also makes repairs to any make or model of guitar. He’s the only employee, or as he tells it; “I do everything. I’m the PR guy. I’m the finance guy and I’m the builder. I’m the guy who makes the deliveries.” To find out more about Phil Culleton, PSE guitars and available repair services, log on to psecustomguitars.net. He can be contacted by telephone at 226-280-3305 or you can email him at pculleton1@gmail.com. He loves guitars and enjoys talking music with people of similar likes. His guitars are top-notch and his service is always in the interest of the customer. He’s certainly worth checking out! WLM

Yet another advancement in superior cleaning has been introduced by Windsor Vacuum, Your Clean and Healthy Home Store. Helping residences and businesses shine, owners Jon and Alfred Zakoor listened to customers, then searched for a central vacuum hose that was easy to handle. They found a dependable product by HideA-Hose Inc. in the U.S. “Central vac is becoming fully automated with this hose that is completely retractable inside the wall,” Jon says. “While people opt for a central vacuum to avoid manoeuvring a portable vacuum cleaner s through the home, some would prefer not carrying Quick-Clean Daily Messe the long hose from room to room or putting it away after vacuuming,” Jon observes. The Hide-A-Hose resolves those issues. Already a huge trend in the GTA, the retractable hose system is taking off in Essex and Kent Counties, ever since Windsor Vacuum began offering it several months ago. “Our customers who have it love it,” Jon says. The retractable hose travels inside special tubing hidden behind the walls. All the tubing is connected to the central vacuum power unit. Each inlet is fitted with its own hose, custom-sized up to 50’ in length and cleaning areas up to 2,300 sq. ft. When ready to vacuum, “simply pull out the length of hose required from the inlet valve, connect your cleaning wand and go,” Jon explains. When done, detach the cleaning wand and watch as the suction generated by the central vacuum power unit draws the hose into the tubing system. The Hide-A-Hose Central Vacuum system can be retrofitted in most existing homes, provided there is access to an attic or crawl space. In new construction, it can be installed after the plumbing and electrical work is finished. Newby Structured Wiring does all of Windsor Vacuum’s central vac installations for customers’ total satisfaction in home automation. The Hide-A-Hose system works great with central vacuum cleaner power units made by leading manufacturers. Jon recommends combining the Hide-A-Hose with an H-P Central Vacuum System, equipped with high-performance motors and engineered to eliminate 100% of vacuumed dust and allergens from the home As independent vacuum experts who service all makes and models including Beam and NuTone, Windsor Vacuum sells a wide selection of portable vacuums and central vacs by H-P, Panasonic, Samsung, SEBO, Cana Vac and more. Jon invites, “Stop by our showroom and test drive our products, including the Hide-A-Hose system.”

Your Budget, Your Dream, Your Reality House Flip INC. brings style, green construction and smart design to Essex and Kent Counties. If you are building from scratch or renovating your existing home, Brandon Cassidy and his team can help achieve your goals while respecting the environment, your personal taste and your budget. It’s important to connect with a contractor who embraces your vision. House Flip INC. wants to help you create your dream home and makes the process enjoyable and affordable. “It’s really exciting to be a part of people’s visions, helping them define and create unique homes on their terms – and within their budgets,” Brandon says.

ENTER HOUSE FLIP INC. Determined to enhance quality, efficiency and affordability, Brandon streamlined his process and created House Flip INC., a full service contractor that brings together, under one umbrella, all the trades required to successfully complete a new build or renovation. This eliminates the need for multiple contractors, and Brandon has full control over scheduling, material selection, overhead and problem solving. His method reduces clients’ costs while increasing their satisfaction in the final results. In 2015, Brandon returned to Essex County and discovered an opportunity for hard workers. One small project in upscale Walkerville led to neighbouring homeowners engaging House Flip INC. for landscaping, roofing, interlocking brick installation, basement renovation and other improvements. House Flip INC., as the name indicates, is also called in by house flippers who need a turnkey company to do the construction work and prevent costly, dangerous errors.

TINY HOMES, TOO On work sites since age eight, Brandon started out helping his father Wayne Cassidy at the family business, Cassidy Home Improvement, where as a boy, Brandon learned to build stud walls and hang drywall. Since then, he has built several homes with his father. Brandon worked in landscape construction for 15 years in Windsor, Hamilton and Toronto before beginning his career as a Toronto-based general contractor (GC). Brandon has worked directly with homeowners to execute large renovation projects and new home design and construction. A GC does everything: Developing blueprints; coordinating equipment; hiring tradespeople; scheduling; and securing permits. Brandon’s experience and attention to detail bring together the various elements of each custom project.

EXPERIENCE AND EXPERTISE MATTER As the owner of eight home improvement companies under the umbrella of House Flip INC., Brandon has strategically assembled a wellrounded, multiskilled and dependable team that gets the job done.

Brandon believes that every Canadian should be able to enjoy homeownership and works to establish a local community of tiny homes. “When I lived in Toronto, I paid big money to live in a little place. Now I’m using what I learned and putting that into tiny homes,” he says. “We have currently begun design and construction of two 40’ shipping containers and two utility trailers, converting them into unique, custom tiny homes. We are also incorporating solar power into each design.”

Brandon’s experience with tiny homes proves useful in redoing attics and basements in traditional houses to make the most of the owners’ space. Delivering style and function in compact square footage, growing non-GMO produce on the roof and building in other smart, space conscious features, Brandon thinks “tiny homes will be big in Essex and Kent Counties. Priced from $25,000 to $50,000, they can help people have the security of homeownership without a large mortgage. I also want to take my knowledge to high school students and help them view homes in fresh ways.”

PERMACULTURE AND GROWING FOOD AT HOME

GREEN CONSTRUCTION AND PALLET WOOD PROJECTS A green business, House Flip INC. repurposes pallets into feature walls, custom furniture, decks and fences. “Typically, discarded pallets are turned into garden mulch. We have developed a way to put together sections of 2 x 4s harvested from pallets and reinforce them to make support posts,” Brandon says. The team drinks from reusable coffee cups, uses green or recycled construction materials whenever possible and tries to keep salvageable items out of the landfill by placing restored or repurposed furniture in new rooms. “We strive to make positive changes, through conscientious design and our team’s artisanship and creativity,” says Brandon.

BUILDING COMMUNITY Brandon would like to reach out to elementary schools to share his knowledge of gardening and permaculture, using renewable resources and a self-sustaining ecosystem to grow food at home. “Permaculture is a big focus of House Flip INC. We’re encouraging future generations to produce their own food while reducing their carbon footprint,” he says. “Vegetables and fruit that you grow yourself always taste better than produce bought in the store. It’s important that we try, as much as possible, to eat locally and whatever’s in season.”

PROGRESSIVE, RESPONSIBLE DESIGN AND BUILD SERVICES

Recent mega storms brought Brandon and his team into the swamped homes of local flood victims. House Flip INC. has spent months returning properties to livable condition at a substantial discount. The contractor says, “As a community, we have to be there for one another.” “Everything we do begins with our clients’ passion and personality,” Brandon explains. “House Flip INC. tends to attract people who are progressive, eco-minded, money-wise, imaginative thinkers. We don’t rest till everything is the way our clients want it to be.” “Bottom line: My team and I are trying to do our part to make this a better community in a better world.”

“Make one call for all your renovation and construction needs, all while saving you money.” For existing houses and condominiums, House Flip INC. provides complete interior and exterior restoration, specializing in kitchen and bathroom transformations, flooring, stone masonry, landscaping and decks and fences. Interior design and property management services are also offered. “We can do everything with our own people, keeping control of the costs and schedule,” Brandon says. “As your one-stop solution, we minimize overhead. Often, your budget goes farther with House Flip INC., so you can get additional projects done.”

PORTUGAL Discovering a Different Kind of Seaside Getaway STORY BY KAREN PATON-EVANS / PHOTOGRAPHY BY JEFF PATON

TEEING OFF in Myrtle Beach. Shaking Mickey and Minnie’s big gloved hands in Florida. Haggling over silver jewellery in Mexico. Hunting for seashells in Texas. Dozing in a hammock on a Bahamian island. Endlessly feasting while cruising the Caribbean. As far as the typical vacations that Canadian snowbirds take to escape winter for a bit, we had already enjoyed many of them. “Want to go to Portugal in January?” our son, Jeff, invited us out of the blue. Although my husband, Jim, and I love Europe and had visited much of it, Portugal was never on our radar. After a quick Google search, we were eager to remedy this, especially upon learning the average winter temperature is a high of 16 Celsius. Perfect for sightseeing in light jackets. Liz, our daughter-in-law, soon devised a travel itinerary that would take us to the country’s capital, Lisbon, then down the Atlantic coast to the rapidly expanding fishing village of Albufeira and on up to central Portugal to ancient Evora. With Spain right next door, a day trip to Seville was included in our 12-day trip. A seven-hour redeye flight out of Toronto landed us in Lisbon on Sunday morning, Jan. 29th, 2017. (Portugal’s time zone is five hours ahead of Windsor). Picking up our rental car, we made the short drive into

the city to our modern hotel. A refreshing nap shook off some jetlag. We hailed a taxi and zipped downtown to the Rua Agusta area. The old section of the city was hopping in the early evening. The streets and sidewalks patterned with black, grey and white cobblestones were filled with families and sightseers; zone heaters took the chill off patio tables outside cafés. We managed to claim chairs, ordered drinks and began watching the passing humanity. Everyone wore athletic or walking shoes. The uneven, unforgiving surface of the rocky granite pavers, each roughly the size of a large fist, was slick with the cold. A guide later told us that every Portuguese resident has at least one personal story of seriously falling on the cobbles. Even so, whenever municipalities suggest replacing pavers with asphalt, people rise against the motion. Tradition triumphs. A medley of languages swirled around us. While residents predominantly speak Portuguese, English is the second most common language and is taught in schools, making it easy for us to communicate with service and hospitality workers. Dramatic Fado music, Portugal’s version of the blues, lured us into a small restaurant packed with a rapt audience. Ordering the country’s specialties – seafood, black pork and green wine – we were stunned by the low bill. With the average Portuguese monthly wage at $1,250 CDN, the staples of life are much cheaper than in Canada, making Portugal a very affordable vacation destination. Every meal we ate during our trip was flavourful and healthy. Before heading to bed, we popped into a pastry shop that baked one treat: Pastéis, Portuguese custard tarts that are best eaten warm out of the oven. Making the tarts is considered an art; our family committed to becoming connoisseurs on our trek through the country. Up early Monday, we were greeted by our guide, Marta, who loaded us into her We Hate Tourism private tour van. A world traveler, the guide adored her native country and was generous with details. She seemed part magician as she squeezed the big vehicle through narrow streets that were never designed for cars. Tires bumping over the cobbles, we tried to look

everywhere at once to take in Lisbon’s oldworld architecture. The city the Portuguese call Lisboa has Roman ruins lying beneath its surface, including the Roman Galleries, a subterranean labyrinth that Roman occupiers had hewn out of the stone in the 1st century AD. The ruins of Roman Emperor Augustus’ 57 AD Roman Theatre is now a museum and cultural space. Churches, abbeys and monasteries frequently meet the eye in Lisbon, many of which continue to serve their parishioners and welcome visitors. Others have been repurposed as museums. The Catholic faith was brought to the region by the Romans in

Clockwise from top left: The Roman Temple of Evora, built in honour of Augustus in first century AD, has partly endured, its stone columns still able to stand and its carved marigolds, sunflowers and roses ever blooming; the 1960 Monument of the Discoveries stands 50 metres tall on the bank of the Tagus River estuary in Lisbon, celebrating the Portuguese Age of Discovery in the 15th and 16th centuries, when the country’s ships sailed to India, Asia and unchartered territory; appreciated for their craft, pasteis bakers hand-form pastry shells for Portuguese custard tarts.

1st century AD. Today, more than 80% of Portugal’s 10.3 million residents are baptized Roman Catholic and their abundant houses of worship range from pretty, painted stucco buildings to resplendent cathedrals of dressed stone, carved marble and golden gilt. Although Lisbon’s architectural landscape was forever altered by a devastating earthquake in 1755, sturdier cathedrals survived or were rebuilt. Nearly 30 km outside of Lisbon was our main destination, the resort town of Sintra, once the summer playground of monarchy desiring to escape the capital city’s 40 Celsius heat. Although Portugal’s system of monarchy ended with revolution in 1910, noble families continue to reside in wealthy, lofty and more temperate Sintra. Looking down from the hilltop is a popular tourist spot, the Pena National Palace, the Moorish and Manueline-style summer residence that King Ferdinand II created out of a former monastery in the 1800s. Another visionary left his mark on Sintra’s hilly landscape. Carvalho Monteiro completed his castle, Quinta da Regaleira, in 1910, indulging his fascination with alchemy, Masonry, the Knights Templar and the Rosicrucians with symbols carved into the estate’s chapel and other whimsical buildings. We walked down the stone spiraled steps of the Knights Templar Initiation Well, an inverted tower dug into the earth. Y o u r

Above: Portugal’s neighbour, Spain, has preserved its remarkable city, Seville, with landmarks from the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition, including the castle-like Plaza de España.

During our lunch break in a seafood restaurant on Guincho Beach, we were entertained by surfers taking on the Atlantic’s big waves. Portugal draws surfers from around the world. Stopping at mainland Europe’s most westerly point, Cabo da Roca, we crossed a rocky, windswept cliff to stand at what Europeans believed was the edge of the world until the 14th century. For us, the terrain and view of the Atlantic reminded us of standing in Newfoundland. Next morning, we gazed over Lisbon after riding the old Tram 28E to the top. Our careful walk through the ruins of Castelo de Sao Jorge’s castle and battlements was rewarded with the sight of the River Tejo. Our private guide, Marko, escorted us on a night tour, beginning with a traditional Portuguese feast, followed by a visit to Antiga Confeitaria de Belém for their pastéis. The bakery makes more than 10,000 tarts daily using a recipe that only the three owners know. To safeguard their secret, they never travel together. Walking off the calories on the waterfront, we oohed over the Tower of Belém, a 16th century square stone fortress on the Tejo estuary. Nearby is the Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown, a contemporary biomedical research centre inaugurated in 2010, with huge round windows giving glimpses into the interior garden. In the courtyard of the white neoclassical Palace of Ajuda, our guide poured Portugal’s famous port into our glasses and cried, “Chin, chin!,” bringing the evening to a happy close. Wednesday morning, Jeff and Liz cabbed it to Estádio José Alvalade for a tour of the major European football (soccer) stadium.

Jim and I wandered through Mosteiro dos Jeronimos, a grand monastery with ornately carved adornments – a humbling sight for early sailors praying in the chapel before shipping off into the unknown. In the neighbourhood is the comparatively austere former convent founded by Queen D. Leonor in 1509 and now housing the Museu Nacional do Azulejo – the national tile museum honouring the country’s famous tile heritage. The whitewashed cloisters and nuns’ rooms display tiles depicting patterns, religious icons and public life, all crafted by Portuguese artisans in the 16th century to present day. Huge murals of blue and white tile line the lower walls of the gilded baroque chapel. The museum’s top floor showcases the Great Panorama of Lisbon, wrought in painted tile and measuring nearly 36 meters long. Done before the 1755 earthquake, the panorama reveals the cityscape of the time. A 2.5-hour drive brought us to Albufeira, a fishing village turned tourist haven. The tide was out, letting us walk on the long sandy beach in the sunshine. Maybe a dozen people had the same idea; in summer, a sea of sunbathers obscure the sand. Checking into our vacation villas for the next six days, we settled into a relaxing rhythm. Watching the ocean from restaurant balconies, shopping for leather and cork goods, listening to live musicians and dancing in Albufeira’s village square. The pace picked up on a four-hour, 80 km road tour on ATVs. Our guides, Clare and Rory, had left the rat race in England for a gentler lifestyle. Zooming along remote tracks, we drove through forests, into little villages and up a mountain. Seeing our puzzled expressions when pale pink stuff started raining down, Rory laughed. “That’s Portuguese snow – the white petals off blooming almond trees.” The aromatherapy from the citrus already ripening in the groves was so wonderful we had to stop and drink it in. The scent of oranges permeated Seville when we drove 2.5 hours east to Spain on Saturday. Citrus trees line the streets, casting oranges underfoot and under car tires. The bitter fruit is used to make marmalade. In Seville’s old town, a wide boulevard lined with restaurants is closed to vehicles, so pedestrians only contend with trams, horse-drawn carriages and countless street performers. A Spanish flamenco dancer twirled her skirts to great applause. Hopping into a carriage, we clip-clopped past the castle-like Plaza de España, Maria Luisa Park and other beautiful public spaces created for the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition. Back in Portugal, we spent the day at the crenelated 700-year old ruins of Silves Castle, feeling like kids taking over the fort. At the foot of the castle, a Sunday lunch of roast beef with Yorkshire pudding was served under the trees while a Brazilian reggae fusion band played. They and the orange olive cake made from local produce were big hits. More charm awaited us when we checked into Evora, two hours away. The old city has aged gracefully, preserving the columned ruins of the Roman Temple of Evora, built to honour Augustus in the first century AD. The stone arches of the 16th century Aqueduto da Agua de Prata aqueduct are infilled with tiny houses. The city walls of the same era enclose lovely public gardens; Jim and I stepped into the small towers on the defence ramparts for a medieval perspective. Meanwhile, Liz and Jeff braved the creepy Bones Chapel, erected by three Franciscan friars in the 1600s who used 5,000 human skulls and bones to fashion the walls and pillars. The brothers’ intention was to remind people that life is temporary and fragile. Appreciating that message, we reflected on the opinion of our first guide, Marta, who noted that while many Portuguese experience financial hardship in a challenging economy, they still find ways to enjoy life. Nearly everyone we encountered was indeed pleasant and friendly, influencing our decision to return to the country someday. WLM

Age Healthier, Live Happier with Bio-identical Hormone Optimization READY TO GET RESULTS, the men and women who turn to Ajeless Health and Medical Spa in Northville, Michigan typically share similar issues. Persistent fatigue. Excess weight. Concern over chronic diseases. Feeling down or anxious. No longer recognizing themselves in the mirror. However, there is something distinctly different about a group of new patients: They are Canadian. Upon meeting the first Canadian patient in his clinic last year, Dr. Aylmer Evangelista was intrigued. The boardcertified Internal Medicine physician was accustomed to Americans traveling long distances to receive his BioTE bioidentical hormone optimization pellet treatments for reversing aging and improving their health. With all that Canada offers, he wondered why a Windsorite would cross the border and drive 50 km to Ajeless. “Because we can’t get what you provide,” his patient told him. More Essex County residents chanced upon Ajeless and became patients. “They encouraged me to let people in Canada know about our treatments,” Dr. Evangelista says. “Through hormone optimization, I shift your metabolism and hormones back to when you were much younger,” he

Your Smile is Our Passion YOUR SMILE IS UNIQUELY YOUR OWN. It’s one of the first things people notice about you. Healthy, well-shaped teeth add to your attractiveness and vibrancy. This is true whether you still have your natural teeth or wear dentures. Ill-fitting and aging dentures, however, can be embarrassing. The skilled professionals at the Parisien Denture Clinic can help. Owner Barry Parisien DD has been practicing in Windsor since 2000. As a denturist, he is a specialist in the fabrication of full and partial dentures, including teeth set permanently on implants. “Using today’s highest quality teeth, we can make dentures that are indistinguishable from natural teeth and in some cases function nearly as well,” Barry says. Equally important, the caring denturist ensures dentures are secure and comfortable on the gums. Parisien Denture Clinic characterizes each tooth to create custom smile makeovers. One patient, Guy, declares, “Barry’s dentures are works of art....He is assuring and really knows his profession.” Although the Parisien Denture Clinic team makes dentures as secure as possible, Barry acknowledges, “Full lower dentures often don’t fit well.” He explains that the minimum standard of care for a lower denture is to have two implants placed in the lower jaw to hold the denture in place. A removable denture snaps onto the implants, making it very secure. The dentures unsnap for cleaning. An even better solution is permanent teeth installed on implants, which can be done in one day and then worn around the clock afterwards. “You can virtually forget you have dentures. Brush and eat like you did with your natural teeth,” says Barry. Realizing people who have never worn dentures before have questions, Parisien Denture Clinic puts them at ease with a free initial consultation, taking as much time as each patient requires. Listening

to their concerns and hopes, Barry then explains options and walks patients through the process. “We have various solutions to help work within people’s budgets,” he says. He finds, “We are all creatures of habit. Dentures change so slowly that most people don’t notice the change and simply become accustomed to a set of teeth that are no longer fitting or cutting through food properly. Many people don’t come in and see us until there’s an emergency, like a broken denture. When we make them new dentures, these people are typically amazed at how much better they can chew and how much more comfortable their dentures are.” Parisien Denture Clinic patients frequently remark they will only entrust their denture needs to Barry and his team. Mrs. K says, “I love my new teeth! I can't believe how comfortable they feel. They are so much better compared to my old teeth. Thank you!” People also turn to the clinic for effective, custom-made antisnoring devices. Barry has taught courses across Canada to denturists and dental technicians, sharing techniques to achieve more natural looking and better functioning dentures. In turn, Barry has studied under renowned dentists and master dental technicians from Germany and Austria. He is a BPS certified denturist, meaning Barry has passed training in the Bifunctional Prosthetic System and is able to provide master class dentures using teeth and equipment from Ivoclar Vivodent. He served as 2nd vice president and on the board of directors of the Denturist Association of Ontario. No referral is needed to be treated at Parisien Denture Clinic, 375 Cabana Rd. E., Windsor. QUINN ROOFING SOLUTIONS New Technology So Roofs Last Beautifully

Ken and Sue Quinn of Quinn Roofing Solutions

THROUGH EARNING and upholding its outstanding reputation for dependable commercial work, Quinn Roofing Solutions Inc. has also attracted homeowners and homebuilders. “The demand for our residential roofing has increased to the point where we decided we needed a dedicated residential roofing team to serve southwestern Ontario,” says Sue Quinn, who coowns Quinn Roofing Solutions with her husband, Ken. “Our team provides homes with the same quality service that our commercial clients rely on.” “Being a commercial company that is accustomed to professional demands since 2002, we satisfy our industrial and institutional clients by properly training our team. Being on time. Providing health and safety insurance. Delivering on our promises. Those are our standards for residential clients, as well,” Sue says. “All clients are benefiting from advanced engineering in today’s roofing products which last longer, are more efficient and provide better value,” says Ken. That is great news for homeowners, whether they are in their forever home or wanting the best return when selling. Pleased with the performance and quality of the new generation of shingles, Ken observes, “The rating for wind protection is greater. Shingles used to withstand 105 miles per hour winds. Now they are made to handle 145 mph winds. There will be far fewer shingles blown onto the ground as a result.” Another protective feature for the modern roof guards against a common winter problem. “When a lot of snow melts rapidly, it can cause ice damming,” Ken says. A ridge of ice forms at the roof ’s edge, stopping melting snow from draining off properly. The water has to go somewhere, so it backs up behind the dam and leaks into the

house, damaging the walls, ceilings and insulation. “The smart solution is to install a peel and stick ice and water barrier membrane that is laid in two rows back from the roof ’s edge for 6’ of exterior coverage. It is also installed 2’ inside the house’s walls.” Venting the roof properly also helps stop ice damming from occurring by maintaining a cooler roof temperature. As well, vents are necessary to let moisture and excess heat escape from the attic, promoting energy efficiency. “We are recommending a new style of venting that is superior in function and appearance,” Ken says. “Instead of putting the usual 12” x 12” square static roof vents in the face exposure of the roof, we are installing continuous ridge venting. It’s one long vent that runs the length of the roof ’s peak. You really don’t notice the vent, at all. You just see the ridge.” “The biggest advantage, however, is that continuous ridge venting moves more air in the attic and ventilates more efficiently.” Moss on the roof is never a good sign. “New technology has developed organic shingles that are treated with moss inhibitor, reducing the potential for shingle deterioration due to vegative growth,” Ken says. Clients’ peace of mind is top priority for Quinn Roofing Solutions. Should you choose hardworking asphalt shingles; a green, energy-saving TPO or PVC roof system; high-performance Duro-Last® Roofing System or a different product for your property, the certified Quinn team installs an enduring roof with a warranty backed by the Ontario Industrial Roofing Contractors Association and the Canadian Roofing Contractors Association. The laser treatment leads to stimulation of collagen and blood vessels beneath the surface of the vaginal wall to restore the normal function of healthier tissue. Laser vaginal treatment is an outpatient procedure that lasts less than 10 minutes. Three sessions over a 12 week period are recommended to achieve the best results. MonaLisa Touch laser treatments are not painful, but an anesthetic cooling cream can be applied before the treatment to reduce discomfort. Revitalize Medical Laser Centre offers even more. To find out how Revitalize Medical Laser Centre can help you look and feel better, contact them today at 519-254-1444 or visit www.rmlc.ca for more information about their services.

LÖVE RAZËR

HARD ROCK SOUNDS FROM AN AWARD WINNING LOCAL BAND STORY BY DICK HILDEBRAND / PHOTOGRAPHY BY RYAN BROUGH, ZEEBRA MEDIA

YOU COULD SAY that Bruce DeBacker, 26, is an enigma…given his credentials, you’d think he would be the consummate business professional. However, nothing could be further from the truth! Born in Leamington, he matriculated from the Leamington District Secondary School and attended St. Clair College where he finished a course in Police Foundations. He continued his education at Brock University in the Niagara Region, graduating with a Social Sciences degree. “Then,” according to his father Neil, “the former bass player marched straight out of university and became a front man in his main band ‘Löve Razër’. With music being his passion, Bruce is also a member of two other bands —‘Hair Force One’, a well-known Windsor-based rock group where he plays guitar and shares the stage with his guitar player from Love Razer, performing acoustic covers, mainly in area clubs and bars. ‘Löve Razër’, which, thanks to the internet has a fan base stretching from Windsor to Quebec and around the globe, is a four piece band with a hard rock sound that has been compared to Motley Crue. “I sort of look like one of the members,” says Bruce DeBacker, “I’ve got long blond hair, kind of like one of the singers, while our guitar player with his long black hair looks like their guitar player. A lot of people have suggested a relationship between our sound and that of Motley Crue.” However, DeBacker emphasizes “we don’t sound like that band on purpose...we’re a new sound...we’re not even like an 80s rock band, although we have hints of that era. There might even be a bit of punk style but first and foremost we are a

78

hard rock band.” Ideally, Löve Razër’s target audience would range in age from 16 to 30; people who want to hear music from real instruments instead of the electronic sounds which are so popular these days. The guys like to carry some personal mystery into their shows so each one has a stage name, just to make it more interesting. Bruce, as lead singer and composer of most of the original lyrics, goes by the name of SYDNEY SNOW, a moniker he adopted because he liked the name Sydney and is an avid snowboarder. As he describes himself, “I’m a part-time support worker in the field of special needs, with a full-time career in music.” Briar Lindley, who calls Belle River home is more familiarly known as MICKY BONEZ and is the group’s guitar player. He’s a member of several bands and earns his living exclusively through music. Bruce says, “he’s a full-time rock star.” Mike Wilkins, or METAL MIKE is the bass player and works at Caesar’s in Windsor as an audio-visual technician, while the Löve Razër drummer is CRISSY STIXX or Chris Atkins, who is employed in the auto parts manufacturing industry. In the beginning the group did have a fortunate break. Having only been formed two years ago, ‘Löve Razër’ applied to the Jack Daniels Supporting Act competition online and won. Instead of pocketing the cash prize, the band put it toward the cost of producing their first disc…an extended play album and to produce a music video. A second video was released in August of last year while a third titled ‘Stuck Under You’ was made public this past February.

It was recorded live at the new $1.5 million soundstage at Seacliffe Park in Leamington following the Hogs for Hospice motorcycle ride last summer. The videos can be seen by logging on to the band’s Facebook page or on You Tube, while other tunes can be heard by logging on to various internet music sites. More information on the band can be found by logging onto www.loverazer.com. Playdates, links to other sites, and merchandise, along with tickets to the album release party are all available on the site. A full-length album titled “Border City Rebels,” an 8 track disc of original bandcomposed material and recorded at Marty Bak’s SLR studio in Windsor, will be unveiled April 28th at the Rockstar Music Hall on Central Avenue in Windsor. Doors for the big bash will open at 9 pm and tickets can be purchased through the band’s website. During the next couple of months, the guys will take to the road again for shows across Ontario to promote their new album. Again, all proceeds will be used to pay for the next album and to fund American visas which, hopefully, will allow the group to play in the rich U.S. market as early as next year. Already, ‘Löve Razër’ is gaining a small foothold around the world, thanks to online radio and Facebook. Messages have been received from as far away as Germany and Italy where people have heard the music. Locally, 89X has featured the band on its Indie band segments. ‘Löve Razër’ puts forth its best efforts no matter how big, or how small the crowd. The band has already appeared at numerous clubs across Ontario and in parts of Quebec. The music rocks and patrons generally crowd the dance floor. While most of the tunes are original material, the band does play cover versions of hits from bands like Motley Crue, Guns N’ Roses, AC/DC, Aerosmith and Bob Seger. And that explains Bruce, is basically for fans who aren’t necessarily familiar with our original stuff and allows them to “better understand what we’re all about.” The formula seems to be working. Audiences are getting larger and the fan base is growing. Band members make no pretenses …they’re all down to earth and there are no inflated egos. They work hard knowing what a fickle and difficult industry they’re in. They take their music seriously and still manage to have lots of fun. They play harddriving rock and roll that comes at you with laser precision. Only time will tell what success awaits Löve Razër down the road. WLM

WHEN TANYA MACRI DECIDED to open LuxBrows and Beauty she had one goal in mind: To make people feel absolutely incredible about their true beauty. Tanya asserts, “The most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or touched, they must be felt. It is my wish that anyone who leaves LuxBrows and Beauty leaves with a smile, feeling amazing about themselves.”

Tanya is certified in Microblading and has traveled the world taking advanced courses and learning new techniques to perfect her craft. Microblading is a form of semi-permanent tattoo art which deposits pigment under the skin with a manual hand held tool. Hair-like strokes are created to mimic natural hairs. The result: customized fuller eyebrows tailored made for your face. To compliment your new eyebrows, Tanya is also a certified Lash Lift Specialist. She can create naturally lifted lashes that will last about eight weeks. In addition to Microblading and Lash Lifts, Tanya is most excited about her newest service called Plasma Skin Tightening. As a certified Fibroblast Technician, she is able to reverse the signs of aging and treat a number of imperfections without any cutting of the skin. Most notable procedures include non-surgical eye lifts, wrinkle reduction, tummy tightening, scar lifting treatments, stretch mark removal and much more. Tanya says, “One client had not seen her own eyelids in over 20 years. Now she is having fun applying eyePhoto by Foto Genix shadow again.” This extremely accurate device works by utilizing the voltage in the air between its tip and the skin to form a plasma charge. An electrical arc is created and instantly shrinks the targeted skin. “The tissue retraction and tightening is not comparable to any laser or treatment on the market,” Tanya says. The positive effects of the treatment will be noticeable immediately after the first treatment and will continue to get better over the course of eight weeks. Plasma Skin Tightening is for men and women. As with everything that Tanya offers at LuxBrows in Lakeshore, Tanya made certain she received the absolute best training when becoming certified. She took classes at DermaPro Canada, an esthetic training academy, to be educated in Plasma Skin Tightening. As a pioneer in Windsor-Essex County doing Plasma Skin Tightening, Tanya has become a highly sought after asset in the beauty industry. Vehicles for People Who Want to Enjoy the Ride “THE LINCOLN BRAND IS ONE of the most innovative and fastest growing among luxury automakers. Four new Lincoln models have been released in the past four years. And the iconic Lincoln Continental is back,” says Steve Desjardins of Victory Lincoln Sales. Vince Lally purchased Victory Lincoln in 2010. Don “Sparky” Leonard served as general manager for six years before becoming the dealership’s public relations specialist. The position of general manager is now capably filled by Steve Desjardins. Lincoln MKZ, MKC and MKX sedans enable five people to travel in comfort and style. The MKT offers a third row of seating, accommodating seven people. Owners appreciate safety features, like Intelligent All-Wheel Drive that maximizes traction before wheelslip can occur. The BLIS (Blind Spot Information System) with crosstraffic alert10 uses radar to detect a vehicle in the blind spot when changing lanes or backing up and instantly alerts the driver. “This year, we are all very excited

that Lincoln brought back its Continental, reimagined for today’s discerning driver,” Steve says. “It was really well received with our customers and we were able to get some special stock allocation so that we can actually have some in stock for customers to see and drive.” Elegance in motion, the Continental is available with a 3.0L GTDI V6 engine and Dynamic Torque Vectoring. The cabin is trimmed in wood and upholstered in Bridge of Weir Deepsoft Leather. The 30-Way Perfect Position Seats are optional. Recognized by its signature Lincoln Continental grille, the sedan extends its own special Embrace, detecting the key fob as the driver approaches, illuminating the headlights, taillights, interior dome light and E-Latch door handle pockets and projecting a Lincoln welcome mat onto the ground. When the driver is seated, the push-button start brings the engine to life and the Smart PowerFold side mirrors unfold. “Another superior vehicle we are eagerly anticipating is the 2018 Lincoln Navigator, a refreshed model worth waiting for,” Steve says. After purchasing a Lincoln, the dealership’s Courtney Stowe arranges for a Victory Lincoln attendant to pick it up for regular maintenance. “The vehicle is then washed and returned to you on the same day. If you require a vehicle while your own is being serviced, we provide a Lincoln loaner,” Steve assures. A personal concierge is always on duty with the Lincoln Way app, designed for select smartphones. Steve says, “This generation of Lincolns is something you need to experience to believe.”

Mr. Insulation is committed to quality installation of every type of insulation to improve the energy efficiency of your home. Locally owned and operated by Fred Corp, with over 25 years in the insulation business, Mr. Insulation provides new home builds and older home upgrades. “Proper insulation is the best way to control your heating and cooling costs,” Fred points out. “It may seem obvious when the weather is cold and you notice drafts that can be sealed properly, but it is the air conditioning in the summer that is costing you even more money.” Insulation can settle after 20 years or you may have a basement or crawl space that you know is not insulated. Now is the perfect time to take advantage of a home insulation upgrade with rebates available thru the Ontario Governments GreenOn program or thru Union Gas if you are a customer. Spray foam insulation offers several benefits including: significant savings on energy costs, added strength to the building structure, does not require a vapour barrier, is permanent and will not sag, stops air and moisture infiltration, eliminates ice damming, improves air quality and keeps dust and pollen out. “Union Gas customers can qualify for a rebate of up to $5,000 towards improving the insulation of their home, and with the GreenOn program customers may qualify for rebates up to $7,200 ” Fred advises. The Mr. Insulation free home consultation, can tell you if you are eligible for a grant and provide cost effective solutions to improving your home’s insulation capacity. Butch Laframboise is the person you speak with during a consultation and Fred ensures that the installation is completed to your satisfaction. Butch is an expert at the grants and rebates programs. There is a greater need than ever before for good insulation in your home due to rising energy costs. Attention: Riverside and South Windsor Residents – If you are a resident of South Windsor or Riverside and reside in one of the hundreds of homes built before 1970 then your home was built without insulation and in some cases grants cover up to 90% of the complete upgrade. “Not even half of the homes in these areas have taken advantage of this rebate,” says Laframboise. It is inconvenient to have a contractor in your home, but proper insulation is of utmost importance Fred stresses. “We are very conscientious of making sure the work is undertaken carefully and in a timely manner. If you would like to take advantage of these rebates available, don’t waste any more time, energy or money, give us a call.” Call Fred or Butch at Mr. Insulation today to arrange a free consultation: 519-962-6062.

From refreshing an older kitchen by replacing cabinet doors and countertops to tearing everything out and doing a complete remodel, Kitchen Rescue & Bath Centre does it all. The professional renovators also design, build and install new home offices, bars, mudrooms, laundry rooms and pantry closets that are functional, organized and impressive. “Some homeowners have a vague idea of what they would like. Others are very decided, with photo images from magazines and websites to show us their preferred cabinetry style, drawer organizers and backsplash tile,” says Jeff Rocheleau, who co-owns Kitchen Rescue with Mike Brisson. “We meet you where you are at. Moderate to high end kitchens, bathrooms and other areas requiring cabinetry are our specialty.” A no obligation house call lets Jeff personally see the room being considered for a makeover. “I also get to view other rooms flowing to the project space so we can complement the home’s overall style,” he says. Feeling stumped or overwhelmed, homeON CABINET REFACING OVER CABINET REPLACEMENT owners often can’t spot the potential. Where they see dinged, tired oak cabinets stuck in the 1990s, Jeff envisions the clean design of BEFORE modern polyester cabinetry, garage door upper cabinets and bar stools sliding under a sleek solid surface eating bar. “When the home is being newly built or totally remodeled, there are even more options,” he says. The most cost effective way to upgrade a kitchen or bathroom is to reuse as many of the cabinet boxes as possible. “If they are in good condition, we can reface them with laminate so they look new. Then we change out the doors and drawer faces, saving you 40 to 60% compared to a total renovation,” Jeff says. Kitchen Rescue offers a large selection of polyester and real wood doors in countless styles, profiles, stains and colours. LED lighting inside and under the upper cabinetry bathe the kitchen in gentle light. A AFTER handsome crown moulding and backsplash finishes everything. A new countertop makes a big impact. Kitchen Rescue installs countertops fabricated from on trend laminates, granite and quartz. To stretch the makeover budget, homeowners can choose from new high definition laminates that look like real granite. THE DOG SNIFFER

Windsor Regional Hospital Goes to the Dogs in Fight on Drugs German Shepherd, Jack, with owner Nick Howchuk of K9 Development.

Above:

YOU MAY MEET JACK visiting children in the paediatric unit at Windsor Regional Hospital (WRH), or you may encounter him sniffing out cocaine in a patient’s purse. In each scenario Jack, a seven-year old German shepherd, takes it all in stride. This good-natured dog loves to receive hugs from sick children in the hospital, but don’t be fooled by his calm demeanor. He is just as comfortable using his nose to find illegal drugs that have found their way into the hospital. Jack is owned by Nick Howchuk of K9 Development. Over the last 20 years, Howchuk has trained over 3,000 dogs, primarily solving behavioral issues. Last June Jack started visiting the hospital as an added security measure. Prior to that he was a regular visitor to the paediatric unit where children absolutely love his visits. Howchuk was initially approached by Adam Paglione, WRH’s manager of legal affairs and risk management. The hospital was noticing a trend in the discovery of illegal drugs. In an effort to be proactive they sought out the services of Jack with a pilot project making rounds at WRH’s Met and Ouellette campuses. Last November Paglione stated in an interview, “We identified a trend in the discovery of illegal drugs,” said Paglione. Local hospitals are a reflection of the communities they serve, he said, and Windsor has been experiencing a change, and an increase, in the types of illegal street drugs in use, including highly addictive opioids.”

“This is a proactive measure in mitigating risk,” said Paglione. He said having such illicit drugs entering the hospital environment is a risk to staff, who have discovered drugs while cleaning rooms, and patients, who could already be on doctor-prescribed medication. On his first visit Jack found six areas where the hospital had confiscated drugs previously. “The hospital staff were really impressed with Jack,” says Howchuk. The practice of using dogs in hospitals for the fight on drugs is not a new idea, but it is unique to this region. Paglione believes WRH is the first such medical facility in Ontario to deploy a drug-sniffing dog, and other hospitals have begun inquiring about the Windsor program. From the outset, WRH did not want police dogs and uniformed officers patrolling the hospital corridors. Instead, they sought the services of Jack and K9 Developments. Jack is a large dog at 92 pounds, he has the perfect temperament for this job. “He’s not a police dog, he’s a celebrity — the patients love him,” said Paglione. Jack’s visits to the hospital are staggered. On random days, Jack, attached by a leash to Howchuk, makes the rounds. When he detects the scent of a drug that shouldn’t be there, he’ll stop next to a closet or a locker or a purse and wait for his treat as a reward. The visitor or patient is then invited to investigate what has been detected. What follows is dealt with “on a case-by-case basis,” said Paglione. There’s no automatic call for the police to intervene. The illicit drugs are seized and disposed of, police are sometimes called and medical staff are involved because of the impact such use might have on patient care plans. Restrictions

can be put in place, for example, barring visitors and restricting patient access to areas outside the hospital. “We don’t want patients to leave, but we want everyone to be safe,” said Paglione, who’s also the hospital’s chief privacy officer. It’s not just Jack’s presence inside the hospital, but word getting out that Jack could pop in at any time, that is helping reduce illicit drugs getting into the hospital. “Just having Jack on-site is a 50% deterrent for people,” says Howchuk. Although Jack loves his work at the hospital, Howchuk notes that it is tiring for the dog. He is currently training his 2-year old Maverick to follow in Jack’s footsteps. Training is unique to each dog. “German shepherds are powerful prey dogs. They love to work and be mentally challenged. Jack thrives on searching out items. He doesn’t care what he’s looking for. He’s a happy dog once he’s found what he’s looking for and is rewarded for it.” Howchuk has been a dog lover all of his life. He found that he developed special rapports with dogs and was a natural at training them. Increasingly his friends were asking for his assistance in training their dogs. It was about 20 years ago when he decided to pursue his passion as a profession. “I found someone in Fort Perry who I could apprentice with,” states Howchuk. “I went to visit for a weekend to see what it was all about. Needless to say I came back and told my wife that this is what I wanted to do and went away for five months to train. Training focused on protection, agility and scent work.” Howchuk successfully attained his certification and the rest is history. He has also received certification from the I.A.C.P (International Association of Certified Professionals), the APDT (Association Professional Dog Trainers) and the CAPPDT (Canadian Association OF Professional Pet Dog Trainers). Although Howchuk has had great success in training thousands of dogs, he is the first to acknowledge that his learning continues to evolve. “You need to realize your limitations and keep learning. I’m lucky that I can make a living doing what I love.” As for Jack and his work at the hospital, Howchuk says they will continue as long as they are wanted. “Even if Jack’s work stops one person from bringing illegal drugs into the hospital, it’s worth it.” WLM

MARTY GERVAIS

AN INVALUABLE HISTORY LESSON FROM THE BORDER CITIES THAT MAKE UP WINDSOR

STORY/PHOTOGRAPHY BY DICK HILDEBRAND

CHALK UP ANOTHER WINNER FOR MARTY GERVAIS! Windsor’s Poet Laureate has just released his latest book, ‘Five Days Walking Five Towns’…touring Windsor’s past…and what a gem it is. After decades of writing ‘My Town’ in the Windsor Star, Gervais has come up with a unique chronicle describing his five day walk through the five communities that became the city of Windsor as we know it today.

94

W i n d s o r

L i f e

“It was just before Christmas in 2015,” recalls Gervais, “and my house was full of visiting children and grandkids. Wanting to get away from the noise for a while, I decided to take a walk in old Riverside where I had grown up.” He began his journey at Riverside Drive and Lauzon Road, site of the former, highly popular Abars: “there was a time when Babe Ruth made his way from across the water to step ashore here and eat and drink and dance with rouge-faced flappers. This was the Roaring Twenties when it wasn’t uncommon to see the likes of mobsters like Al Capone and Lucky Luciano, or movie stars like Lillian Gish and Marlene Dietrich, come through the doors.” Today, Abars is merely a memory, having been torn down seven months after the author had completed his walk. Naturally, the history of Riverside goes far beyond Abars and Gervais manages to tell the whole story in his inimitable style, complete with photographs ….both old and new. Gervais even includes a picture of himself at the age of six or seven. And, did you know that Riverside was the home of one of the most famous men of medicine in the world? Dr. Henri Breault, a native of Tecumseh, was the man who created the first child-proof prescription container. He passed away in 1983 and was inducted into

the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame in 1997. Marty’s second walk, about a month later, began at George and Wyandotte and took him through what was once known as ‘Ford City’ (see the last issue of Windsor Life Magazine for full details as written by former broadcaster Herb Colling). Gervais recalls taking piano lessons at the Holy Rosary Convent at 3975 Riverside Drive back in the 50s. Originally built in 1926 for industrialist Frank Henderson Joyce, it boasted a five car garage and servants’ quarters. It was taken over by the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1952. Ford City, of course, was named after Detroit auto builder Henry Ford, whose company occupied the area for a number of years. As Gervais points out in his book, only the Holy Rosary Church at Drouillard and Riverside Drive has been preserved, and that “much of the history around it has vanished. In addition, Ford Plant One and the Ford City Town Hall and the Ford City Post Office, are gone from the landscape.” One of the area’s landmark businesses, the Border City Boxing Club is located at 1072 Drouillard Road and has been the home of many notable local boxers. Justin Trudeau even paid a visit to the facility back in September of 2012 and Gervais has included a photo of the future PM getting belted in the face by former amateur Canadian boxing champ, Josh Cameron. Walk Number Three – a stroll through Walkerville, named after its founder and most famous citizen, Hiram Walker. It was the home of Windsor’s first nightclub, The Metropole which introduced the city to the smorgasbord-style dinner and feature some of the biggest names in North American entertainment. Before it was taken over by Nick Drakich, the place was a drinking establishment known as The Farmers’ Roost dating back to the late 19th century and frequented by area farmers who stopped in for a brew after delivering their grain to Hiram Walker’s. Over the years, the place has undergone several changes. At one time it was known as California’s and today, it’s the Walkerville Eatery. And, did you know that a former building virtually next door once housed the first company to produce a motorized fire engine in Canada? The factory was owned by Warren F. Seagrave, head of the W.E. Seagrave Fire Apparatus Company of Ohio and “delivered the first three motor fire engines to Vancouver in 1907. The operation closed down in 1923. Another of

Walkerville’s notable residents was former Canadian cabinet minister Paul Martin, whose mansion on Ontario street was built by rum runner Harry Low, a fact that the late Martin enjoyed sharing with people as he talked about his beloved Windsor. On his way out of Walkerville into Windsor, Gervais writes: “it occurs to me that walking in Walkerville is different. It tastes of old world charm and tradition.” The Windsor walk begins at Gladstone and Wyandotte. As he heads west along Wyandotte, Gervais writes with a hint of sadness… “for rent and for sale signs punctuate the walk. It isn’t a pleasant sight.” He writes about the old Windsor arena, known as ‘The Barn’ and reminisces about the great hockey players who skated on its ice. He reminisces about the former Frank’s Diner, which was located directly across from the arena. “He served pancakes the size of truck hub-caps ...ham and eggs on heavy china plates.” The popular eatery was forced to shut down when the city decided to widen McDougall. The Windsor chapter contains numerous photographs of what used to be, accompanied by vivid descriptions of how life was back then. Gervais’ journey comes to an end in Sandwich, which, according to the author begins at the Ambassador Bridge. It’s the home of the Post Café, formerly the Sandwich Towne Post Office, St. John’s Anglican Church, the Chappell House and, of course the Dominion House…a favorite gathering place for students and faculty alike from the University of Windsor along with many writers with Canadian and American roots. As the book states, “the DH is the oldest tavern of the five towns. Originally it was a stagecoach stop for a route that began in Amherstburg and ended in Windsor. Sixteen different innkeepers have owned it.” Even Abraham Lincoln visited Sandwich... just one of the thousands of facts that are contained in the book. You can buy the book virtually anywhere. It’s on the shelves at Biblioasis, Juniper Books, Chapters and Indigo and can be ordered from Amazon. And don’t forget, Marty’s always available to sign your copy. Just drop it off at Biblioasis on Wyandotte and Gladstone and the author will do the honours. He can be reached by email at martygervais@gmail.com. ‘Five Days Walking Five Towns’ is a publication unlike any other – it’s an excellent source of information for the younger generation, and a time tunnel for folks who have been around a while. Simply stated: it’s WLM fascinating!

NEW DISH CLOTHS AND TEA TOWELS DELIVER ECOCLEAN WITH EUROSTYLE Swedish kitchen culture, with its great looks and superior cleaning capabilities, is right at home in Canadian residences. Mary Beth Laing introduced Essex and Kent Counties to A Touch of Swede’s hardworking, attractive dish cloths in 2017 and the company took right off. She recently launched European tea towels and they, too, are being snapped up.

To keep pace with demand, Mary Beth developed a team of salespeople in Southwestern Ontario. “Our new spring and summer catalogue is out now, featuring fresh designs,” says Mary Beth. “Even people who find housework a drudge are getting a kick out of these fun, colourful dish cloths and tea towels.” People who care about the environment appreciate the eco-friendly dish cloth, which can replace 17 paper towel rolls. “It cleans glass, stainless steel, granite and other surfaces perfectly for a sparkling, streak-free finish,” says Mary Beth. No wonder the dish cloth has been a staple in European homes and businesses for almost 70 years. Swedish engineer Curt Lindquist created the thin sponge cloth in 1949, after discovering that a mixture of 70 per cent natural cellulose and 30 per cent cotton absorbs 15 times its own weight in water. The cloth dries rapidly, preventing bacteria from spreading. “The Swedish Dish Cloth is

odour-free, unlike typical dishcloths,” Mary Beth says. The 8” x 6.75” dish cloth can be cleaned in the washing machine or dishwasher, brightened with bleach, laid flat to dry and put back in action. When worn out, the cloth biodegrades in the compost. The dish cloths and tea towels are designed by artist Marie Jangneus-Davis in Sweden and then individually printed with water-based inks in the Cotswolds in England. The ultra-absorbent, 100% cotton tea towel is generous – almost 19” by 30” - and has a large hanging loop. Sporting coordinating patterns, such as modern graphics, moose, dogs, herbs and bikes, “the dish cloths and tea towels uplift chores and make wonderful gifts,” Mary Beth finds. “When new, they resemble a greeting card. Write your message with a fabric pen and the recipient will remember you whenever using the cloth.” Individual prices are $8 per dish cloth and $19.95 per tea towel. A bundle pack of two dish cloths and one tea towel is $29.95. A Touch of Swede salespeople put products directly into customers’ hands with deliveries to workplaces, school staff rooms and homes. The team also sells dish cloths and tea towels at craft and trade shows and Windsor Women in Business events.

“Buying direct from our team ensures you get authentic Swedish Dish Cloths and Tea Towels – not imposter products that are out there,” says Mary Beth. Claudia Campbell is with A Touch of Swede Windsor. Celeste Campeau leads A Touch of Swede Essex County. Cathy Norris is the contact for A Touch of Swede Chatham-Kent. A Touch of Swede London is headed by Hunter Gowan, a teen who wanted to be an independent businessperson. Hunter donates a portion of his profits to a different charity monthly. Community support is important to A Touch of Swede, which assists in fundraising efforts for The Diplomats Drum and Bugle Corps, a Catholic Women’s League, two daycare centres and other organizations. STEPS students volunteered to help fill orders, raising money for a Riverside Secondary School trip to Europe. Purchases can be made by visiting facebook.com/ATouchofSwede/ or by contacting Mary Beth at 519-890-5646 or atouchofswede@gmail.com.

COOKING AT HOME JASMINE JASEY

One whiff of chicken paprikash wafting from her stove transports Jasmine Jasey to her German-Canadian grandmother’s kitchen. “Oma believed food had healing power. Whenever she heard we were sick, she’d be over with a pot of soup and other dishes,” Jasmine recalls fondly. Making simple spaetzle noodles to accompany chicken paprikash “is worth the effort. I prefer food from scratch. It’s healthier for you,” says the wife, mother and ambassador/fundraiser for the Canadian Mental Health Association, Windsor-Essex County Branch.

Oma’s German Black Forest Cake

CHICKEN PAPRIKASH Ingredients: • 4 boneless chicken breasts • 4 chicken thighs with skin • 1 med sweet red pepper • 1/2 med sized cooking onion • 900 ml carton chicken broth • 2 tbsp sour cream

• • • • • •

75 ml sweet red paprika 2-3 tbsp butter 1-2 tbps cooking oil 60 ml white wine (optional) salt and pepper to taste 120 ml all purpose flour to thicken

Dice the red pepper and onions. In a large pot melt butter and oil and saute the peppers and onions until soft. Add optional wine now and cook to reduce the liquid to about 1/2. Cut chicken breasts into 5 cm cubes and add with the thighs to the pepper and onions. Add salt and pepper to taste and ½ of the paprika over all in the pot stirring occasionally so paprika does not burn. Saute for about 5 min on med-low heat. Add ½ carton of chicken broth and remaining paprika to all the ingredients. Paprika can be adjusted according to your taste. Reduce heat to med-low and simmer uncovered for 30-40 mins until chicken is cooked (temp of 74˚C). Stir in the remaining chicken broth. To thicken paprikash: mix flour and water in a cup until a smooth consistency of thickener with no lumps. Slowly add stirring into the paprikash to your desired thickness of sauce. Remove from heat and stir in sour cream. Pour over your spaetzle noodles and enjoy. Serves 6.

SPAETZLE NOODLES Ingredients: • 475 ml all purpose flour • 120 ml of water or milk • 4 eggs • 1 tsp salt • 2 l boiling water in a pot

Mix together flour and salt. Beat eggs well and add alternately with water or milk to the dry ingredients. Mix until smooth. Press dough through a spaetzle maker or metal grater. If you don’t have either use a dime sized dollop on the end of a teaspoon and drop into the boiling water. Cook 3-5 minutes. Drain well.

Ingredients: • 2cups of flour • 1 teaspoon salt • 1 teaspoon baking powder • 2 teaspoons baking soda • 3/4 cup baking cocoa • 2 cups sugar • 1 cup canola oil • 1 cup brewed coffee • 1 cup milk • 2 eggs • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Filling/Icing Ingredients: • 1 can cherry pie filling • Cool whip or vanilla icing • Maraschino cherry • Chocolate sprinkles Mix dry ingredients in bowl. Add oil, coffee, milk, eggs and vanilla. Mix for 2 min medium speed. Pour into 2 greased and floured 9 inch round baking pans. Bake at 325˚ for 25-30 min. Let cool. Ice and decorate!

Betty and Bill Krug, the late grandparents of Jasmine Jasey, immigrated from Germany to Windsor, bringing their heritage and recipes with them.

“My Oma made cakes, tortes and cookies all the time,” Jasmine says. “Black Forest cake was one of her specialties. Now my daughter, Aliya, who is only 12, is a huge baker. She baked the cake for Windsor Life.”

Renowned gymnast Nadia Comaneci was the guest speaker at the 13th annual WESPY awards. Comaneci became famous after being awarded perfect scores at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal.

Renowned Gymnast Nadia Comaneci Speaks At 13th Annual WESPYs STORY BY KIM WILLIS

Imagine being just 14 years old and being awarded five gold medals at the Olympics including the first gymnast to be awarded a perfect score. That is the legacy that Nadia Comaneci has created in the sport of gymnastics. Since making history at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal, Comaneci now 56 has been a role model to thousands of aspiring gymnasts worldwide. However, Nadia’s story goes much deeper than landing perfect 10s in competition. Hers is a story of grit, determination and athleticism. She shared her inspirational story at the 13th annual WESPY (Windsor Essex County Sports Persons of the Year) on March 20 at the Caboto Club. It is also the first year that gymnastics will be a recognized sporting category. When it comes to selecting a guest speaker for this annual event WESPY founder Dominic Papa and his committee look for someone that is inspirational, an accomplished athlete at the top of their sport and also someone who has lived through trials and tribulations. It soon became clear to Papa that Comaneci would be an amazing guest speaker. “Comaneci’s story, like many of the past speakers, is about someone who had to climb the highest mountain to get to the top. She’s what we were looking for: a champion that has overcome adversity and she’s a perfect fit with us brining gymnastics on board,” says Papa.

GYMNASTICS LEGEND

Comaneci was born in the small town of Onesti in Romania on November 12, 1961. Growing up she was very competitive and by the age of six she was hooked on gymnastics. “If there was a stop sign and we raced to see who could get there first, I wanted to see where you are and what you were capable of doing,” says Comaneci. At the age of seven Nadia was discovered by the infamous Bela Karolyi while doing cartwheels at school. Within a year she was training with him three hours a day. By the age of 12 Nadia was living at the state – run gymnastics school training six days/week, eight hours per day. She became eligible for senior competition in 1975 and entered the European championships where she won four gold medals and one silver. From there Nadia entered her first Olympics in 1976 in Montreal where she became a legend by earning four perfect 10s and three gold medals. It’s been 40 years since her Olympic dreams came true and some days she still is in awe of her accomplishments. “You look back, and think, ‘How does a 14-yearold do all this?” says Comaneci. “You see it different as an adult. As a kid, you don’t think it’s a big deal to go out and do three routines.” Although she became a global superstar following the Olympics, her world began to unravel. Her parents split up following the games and Romanian officials decided she should train with a different coach. In response to these difficult times, Nadia tried to take her own life by drinking bleach in 1977 at the age of 15. Romanian officials then allowed her to train with Bela again. She went on to compete in the 1980 Olympics in Moscow where she won two gold medals and two silvers. Following those games, Romanian officials sent Nadia on an 11 city tour in America. It was during the tour that Bela defected to the United States leaving Nadia devastated. She was subsequently banned from travelling to any Western country and her every move and conversation was closely monitored by the government. In 1989 she made the brave decision to defect to the United States. P l a c e

Comaneci now lives in Oklahoma with husband and former U.S. Olympic gymnast Bart Conner. They have a son, Dylan, who is active in sports, but not gymnastics. “He’s into hockey and basketball. In fact, that was one of his presents for Christmas. We bought him 12 professional coaching lessons from a former hockey guy.” Together Conner and Comaneci run the Bart Conner Gymnastics Academy and run several sports equipment stores. They are also editors of International Gymnastics Magazine. Comaneci continues to serve as an ambassador to the sport. She also does a lot for charity including personally funding construction and operational costs of the Nadia Comaneci Children’s Clinic in Bucharest that provides low cost and free medical and social support to Romanian children. Conner and Comaneci are also involved with the Special Olympics. She returned to Montreal last October when a plaza was named after her at Olympic Park. “I was more emotional for that than being on the balance beam,” Comaneci said. She agreed to speak at the WESPY awards because of the dream that she experienced as an Olympian. This is something Comaneci believes exists in every athlete. “There’s a lot of kids that play sports because they’ve been inspired by someone,” Comaneci said. “They watch the Olympics on TV and want to do it.” “I think it’s great to celebrate that. The fact that you have these awards for 13 years and an aspect of charity is really, really great. You give back to the community and let them know you support their work and their competition.” A record 33 awards were presented at the WESPYs to men and women aged 15+. Awards are presented to athletes in a variety of sports along with awards that recognize courage and determination and community service. A few award recipients were announced in advance of the event. Female volunteer of the year will go to Melanie Cardinal and Caboto soccer’s Egidio Mosca and the Clippers Jim Morgan will share the male volunteer of the year. Rob McIntyre from Holy Names High School was awarded the community service award. Marilyn Holland is this year’s recipient of the female legacy award and Eddie Chittaro the male legacy award winner. Nominations for 2017 were submitted throughout the year. A selection committee comprised of representatives from the various sports meets to select the winners. WLM
