Publisher’s Note

Just as this issue of Windsor Life was coming off the presses, a miraculous thing happened: The Sun crossed the celestial equator on its way north along the ecliptic on Mar. 20th, heralding the vernal equinox. In other words, Spring finally arrived!

According to everyone I’ve encountered over the past several weeks, Spring couldn’t get here soon enough. People are eager to get out and see our wonderful community come alive in the fresh, new season. Snowbirds are flocking back and reconnecting with their friends who weathered the winter. And on these pages, you will meet local folks and guests who are doing their best to make this region just a little more interesting.

David and Meredith Finch have proved to be Windsor’s very own dynamic duo. They are DC Comics’ creative artists who have brought the world a modern day Wonder Woman. Seeing their powerful warrior princess, I feel like a teenager all over again!

Author Josh Haddon is another kind of hero, as I’m sure you will agree when you delve into the standup comedian’s personal story and his soon to be released book, The Funny Thing About Cancer.

We introduce you to award-winning Thompson Square, who will be performing at Caesars Windsor on Apr. 4th. As the only established married country music duo on the stage today, Shawna and Kiefer Thompson believe their love is a lot like that shared between Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash.

So it’s only appropriate that we also include a story about local musicians, Paying Cash, a Johnny Cash tribute band.

Take a dip into our article about the Windsor Aquatic Centre and the coaches who are giving us reason to start dreaming about the Olympics.

We usually take you on a trip abroad via these pages. Experience a heartfelt journey with There’s No Place Like Home.

One local family would certainly agree. They’ve opened the doors to their modern, open home to our readers.

Nearly 3,000 people recently toured one of this area’s most inhabited residences: The decommissioned Windsor Jail in Sandwich Town. During its 89 years, more than 20,000 individuals inhabited the jail, which closed last year. Windsor Life will escort you inside for a look around.

We won’t detain you, though. Spring is here - and it’s time to break free!

Sincerely,

Family Togetherness

WITH ROOM TO GROW

NEVER MIND GRANITE COUNTERTOPS, a home theatre or other features that frequently top the wish lists of would-be homebuyers. For one local family, the priority was to find a house that would comfortably accommodate their extra-long dining table.

The husband, who is an only child, and the wife, who hails from a large extended family, enjoy having their nearest and dearest over. Every Sunday, 13 or so relatives and friends gather for dinner, conversation and games. “It was really important to find a space big enough for everyone to be together,” the man says.

Unsettled by seeing people eating wherever they could claim a spot, the husband hunted for the ideal dining table. He was drawn to a butcher block top nearly 11’ long, supported by a rustic ironwork base, and bought it. He says, “We had the table in storage, waiting for a house to fit it.” The hunt took almost a year.

Living in Windsor’s east end, the couple envisioned the style of the new home they wanted. They had also engaged the builder, Lapico Custom Homes. “But we couldn’t find a lot that we really liked,” says the husband.

In LaSalle, a Lapico model home backing onto a conservation area became available for purchase. Their real estate agent, Doris Lapico, suggested the couple take a look. “We fell in love with the model,” the husband says. “Lapico’s style really jived with ours. And the thought of moving into a place already done was very appealing.”

In September 2011, the couple and their two sons, now ages 8 and 11, moved into their new 3,900 sq. ft., two story residence. While the parents delighted in the big, bright kitchen and their private ▼

master suite, the boys went nuts over the finished 2,000 sq. ft. basement with a home theatre ideal for gaming on the big screen.

The open concept kitchen and great room, though, is where the real action is at. “We can all chill out together,” the wife says.

Her husband points out the desk placed in a corner of the great room, just off the kitchen. “It’s where the kids do homework.” Whenever help with a tough question is required, Mom is within earshot as she prepares dinner.

One feature that appealed to the family was the kitchen’s huge island. It is regularly loaded with a buffet to feed guests at casual meals and dinner parties. Painted white, the island is flanked by cabinetry wings that are topped with butcher block. The island’s countertop is white Corian, as are the counters of the dark choco late brown perimeter cabinets. “You can throw something right out of the oven onto the Corian and its fine,” the husband says.

Large and accommodating, “the kitchen is ever evolving,” says the wife. “Everyone congregates here. We always have friends and family over and our sons are as social as we are.”

That is evident by the sheer size of the sprawling black sectional in the great room. “We were tryin g to find something that would fit 10 of our closest friends!” the wife laughs. A sunny yellow accent pillow simply stating “Happy Home” expresses the family’s number one priority.

“This is a very kid-friendly house,” says the wife. Accidental spills wipe neatly off upholstery ▼

fabrics. The dark chocolate hardwood floors in the great room and living room and the grey porcelain tile in the kitchen are easily cleaned. During the day, the spaces are bright with sunlight entering through a wall of windows spanning length of the great room.

Family and friends prop their feet on two African drum tables that serve as coffee tables. When a three-year-old nephew beats on the steel drums, “they’re very loud,” the wife comments. The noise is taken in stride as everybody catches up on the weekly family news.

“Everything in our house has to be pretty durable. We want people to feel at home when they are here,” the husband says.

The main floor spaces are unified by a soft grey, black and white palette. The wife notes, “It’s very monochromatic, very modern. We add a lot of colour accents.”

Her husband says, “I give my wife credit: She can easily change up a room with a few pillows and accents.”

He has made contributions, as well. “The living room reflects our love of travel and the parts of the world we have been able to visit.” Moroccan tables, globes of the earth and miniature replicas of the Taj Mahal, Eiffel Tower and San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge arranged on the stone fireplace mantel and artwork of Manhattan, Paris and London give a cosmopolitan feel to the space. Situated near the front door, the living room is “one of the coziest areas in our house.”

It is made even more interesting with the wife’s punches of colour. Hot pink accents rev up the quiet colour scheme in summertime. “We change with the seasons,” she says. “I love Halloween when it’s fully decked out.”

The seasonal themes carry throughout the house. At Christmastime, the rooms are radiant with four or five evergreens brilliant with lights and ornaments collected from ▼

around the world. “There is a lot of red and bling,” says the wife.

The family’s sons also put considerable thought into decorating decisions. Their parents gave them free reign in determining the themes of their bedrooms and the Jack and Jack bathroom they share. The eldest brother has eclectic tastes, revealed by his surfer comforter teamed with basketball sheets and Pop! collectible figures of Disney characters, sports stars and superheroes. The precisely displayed collection is “probably the only thing that is organized in his room!” his mother chuckles.

The younger son is more of a style purist, sticking to a surf theme, underscored by plush whales and dolphins. “We found this great surfboard and had it made into a desk for him,” his mom says. There are two more bedrooms upstairs, includ ing the master suite. A fifth bedroom, located in the basement, is currently used as a playroom.

Everyone loves to play together in the big basement, sectioned into an entertainment room, home theatre, workout room, playroom, full bathroom and storage areas. Every Sunday night, the couple’s fathers continue their never-ending playoffs on the pool table. Spectators and theatregoers graze at the concessi on stand and popcorn machine. Persimmon accent pillows and handmade Moroccan tables dotting the room speak to the wife’s love of culture.

A separate room houses the A/V equipment powering the home theatre. One of the boys’ greatest joys is to have a sleepover with their friends, with everyone bunked down in the leather reclining theatre chairs.

“We can be upstairs entertaining and the boys can be downstairs doing their own kid entertaining,” says the wife. “As spacious as this house is, we try to make it very homey and comfortable for everyone who comes over.”

URBAN HOME

Achieving Style and Peace of Mind with Professional Design Services

At first thought, hiring an interior design consultant may seem like an indulgence. However, after the property owner tallies the costs of making her own regrettable décor choices plus the stress of sourcing and obtaining materials, hiring and coordinating tradespeople and executing endless other tasks, it becomes apparent that the right design service is a practical luxury.

“A good design consultant eliminates errors before they happen and brings the client’s vision to life efficiently,” says Jodi Mason, principal design consultant and owner of Urban Home and Property Outfitting. “Our clients often tell us we saved them money.”

While most people have ideas about their new space’s appearance, a successful interior usually needs professional skill to carry it out. “The end result is always far superior when our clients provide clues to their design tastes and allow us to capture the spirit of their vision,” Jodi finds.

“How you are going to feel in the new space is paramount,” Jodi says. “The things that you love become the foundation of the design. Because ultimately, when you are living with colours, furnishings, artwork and accessories that speak to you, you will naturally feel at home.”

Urban Home can take on as much of the project as the client wants. Offering incredible value, the consultants are design coaches for the client who wants a 3D custom drawing of an intelligently arranged room and a list of finishes and pieces to purchase so the client can complete the project. That service is only $349.

The client can also put the entire project in the design team’s capable hands. “We’ll take it from concept to completion,” Jodi says.

Vacation, investment and corporate residence owners can take advantage of Urban Home’s new Property Outfitting. The all-inclusive turnkey furniture and professional design packages begin at $50 per square foot for properties in Naples, Boca Raton, West Palm Beach, Orlando and Waikiki.

“Some residential and corporate clients sign off on our design proposals and don’t return till every piece is in place,” Jodi says. “Other people are more hands on, enjoying the process and being a part of it.”

A finalist for the upcoming Business Excellence Awards for Small Company of the Year, Urban Home reveals the latest trends in furniture, fabrics and more in its 4,000 square foot showroom. “We have access to resources, products, tradespeople and artisans that average property owners do not,” Jodi points out. “Most people decorate a few times in their lives. We’ve done it daily for over 10 years.”

Transforming four walls into an environment infused with its own appealing personality requires judicious artistry. Jodi explains, “A successful space requires the right mix and placement of components to achieve harmonious balance. That is much like our design team,” she reflects. “Each member has unique talents, expertise and experience that blend cohesively for eye-pleasing designs. When we’ve nailed it, the room feels right and the client is delighted.”

Some clients are happy to have their interiors shared on Urban Home’s new website, Facebook page, Twitter, Pinterest and Instagram. Savvy homeowners also watch Urban Home’s social media for announcements, like the annual spring floor model sale offering 50 to 70% discounts.

At facebook.com/urbanangelwindsor, Urban Home posts updates of its annual room makeover for a child with special needs. To nominate a child as the next Urban Angel, please visit the site.

Offering Brand Names, Big Selection And Small Town Courtesy

BREAKTHROUGHS in home appliance technology are simplifying cooking, cleaning and laundry, giving you back more of the good stuff, like energy, money and free time.

The astounding evolution of kitchen appliances, washers and dryers forms the history of Essex Appliance Centre Ltd. at 76 Talbot Street South, Essex. “Our family-run business goes back two generations to 1986,” says manager Frank Resendes. “We have professional sales staff who have been selling appliances for so many years that they sold wringer washers back in the 80s. We have all kept pace with industry developments, like today’s high efficiency front load steam washers and electric induction cooking. To say we know our business is an understatement!”

Owners Gord and Cathy Stevens ensure their 20,000 square f oot no frills, warehouse style showroom always contains a broad selection of dependable, well priced appliances to suit every budget. All the preferred brand names in home and professional appliances are here, with stoves, wall ovens, cooktops, microwaves, indoor grills, dishwashers, refrigerators, washers and dryers by Jenn-Air, Wolf, Sub-Zero, KitchenAid, Electrolux, Thermador, Bosch, LG, Maytag, Whi rlpool, GE Profile and Amana.

In the laundry room, “high efficiency is in high demand,” Frank says. “Top loading washers and regular and king size capacity front load washers save water and hydro.” Many models operate with faster spin speeds, resulting in shorter dry times. “Electrolux offers a high end dynamic duo with a 15 minute wash cycle and a 15 minute dry cycle. It’s perfect for small loads on hectic mornings or late nights when you need to wash an outfit fast.”

“Steam washers and dryers are still hot, with more models by more manufacturers. Prices for this technology have dropped, making it even more appealing,” Frank finds. Steam released in the washing machine penetrates fabric fibres and removes set stains and persistent odours. The steam clothes dryer lets you cut the cord and set yourself free of the iron. Cotton shirts, jeans and delicate knits emerge without a wrinkle from the steam dryer. Your spring wardrobe, crushed from winter storage, can be popped in the steam dryer and refreshed and smoothed in minutes.

Everyone wants to eat well while saving money. This year’s kitchen appliances serve both goals, with other desirable features on the side. “Electric induction cooking has expanded from being only available in built in cooktops to a wide variety of freestanding ranges. Induction cooking is faster and safer than gas. It boils water in 90 seconds, so you use less energy. Remove the pot from the cooktop and the heating stops instantly,” Frank says.

If you’ve never cooked before or are a pro, the Jenn-Air Culinary Center ensures everything you put in the wall oven is done to perfection. The Culinary Center boasts a touch screen integrated with the oven. Find prime rib on the screen, choose rare and see a photo of the finished dish. Follow the screen’s directions, slide the meat in the oven and relax while the Culinary Center figures out the

temperature, sets the cooking time and lets you know when it’s time to serve dinner!

Another timesaver that customers are embracing is the double oven range. “It features two independent oven cavities to cook multiple dishes simultaneously,” Frank explains. “Roast a chicken in one oven and bake cake in the other to time your meal precisely.” Double ovens made by Wolf are also equipped with custom range tops. “Four or six burners, charbroiler, griddle – the configurations are limitless,” Frank says. “Our appliance specialist can supp ly you with the product for your dream cooking experience.”

Wolf and Sub-Zero have joined forces to build appliances for life. “Sub-Zero pioneered dual refrigeration technology, the most important development in food preservation. The fridge and freezer areas have individual compressors, so your ice cubes won’t taste like last night’s dinner,” Frank assures. If you enjoy entertaining, Sub-Zero’s under counter, built in fridges, 40 bottle wine coolers or 146 bottle wine cellars keep libations ideally chilled.

The design of the new generation of energy efficient refrigerators harmonizes technology with our needs. “French door bottom freezer fridges are about 80% of our refrigeration sales. Precision Fabrication & Installation of Custom Stone Products

in a granite countertop or other stone enhancement for your home or business, it is reassuring to know that the craftsmen and installers have been doing what they do best for generations.

“Anything to do with granite, marble, limestone or quartz custom work, you can depend on us,” says Ken Casagrande, owner of Casagrande Granite & Marble Ltd. “We have been doing this since 1971.”

The business began as a flooring company founded by Ken’s father, Gino. Father and son have worked together since the 1980s. “We were fabricating and installing granite, marble and other stone floors, as well as polishing and refinishing terrazzo floors in schools, hospitals and shopping centres,” Ken says.

Ken joined the family business just as Windsor-Essex people were beginning to embrace granite as a highly desirable feature in their residences and businesses. “The demand continued to be so huge that we evolved into a stone fabrication and

installation company exclusively in 1999,” he recalls.

Today, Casagrande’s shop is buzzing with activity as skilled fabricators transform 2 and 3 cm thick slabs of granite, limestone, marble and quartz into gorgeous fireplace surrounds, shower walls, tables, desks and kitchen and bathroom countertops fitted with under-mount stainless, granite or ceramic sinks. A new fabrication machine was installed in the granite shop last year to enable the craftsmen to keep up with orders for stone countertops with sinks.

“Everything is custom-made to order for the ideal look and perfect fit,” says Ken.

Hundreds of stone samples and huge slabs are displayed in Casagrande’s showroom where customers can view and compare their options. Ken personally handpicks the slabs from trusted suppliers and keeps a large qua ntity in stock. “Our materials are primarily imported from Brazil, India and Italy,” he says.

Each slab has its own intriguing characteristics. Presented with granites in an astonishing array of colours, such as soft cream, deep blue, chocolaty brown and dark black, with rich veining, speckles or glittering natural crystals, customers are delighted to have so much choice.

Once the customer’s order is placed and fabrication is completed, Casagrande’s own professional installers deliver and install the finished product. Maneuvering big, heavy countertops, desks or wall panels into

place, the respectful installers take great care of the owner’s property. The relationship between Casagrande and the customer continues with aftercare that includes polishing, sealing, maintenance or repair, if required.

With so many years in business, the Casagrande team frequently encounters friends and family of past customers who have referred them. “We have been really blessed. Thanks to our customers’ support, we are always busy,” says Ken.

“Over the past two years, we have totally revamped our operation,” he says. Even better run and more efficient, Casagrande Granite & Marble Ltd. has increased its level of customer service. “Our customers have been very complimentary and our volume of orders has increased significantly. One of our best years ever was 2014.”

From a single countertop to grace a powder room vanity to hundreds of countertops to outfit an entire hotel, Casagrande’s team has one goal: Do the job right and on time. “I’m one of those perfectionists who strives to make every customer happy,” Ken says. “It’s my family name on the job, after all.”

DAVID AND MEREDITH FINCH

Bringing Wonder Woman to Life in the 21st Century

TO COMIC BOOK AFFICIANADOS, HE’S A HERO. To fans at comic book conventions, he’s treated like a rock star.

But underneath it all, David Finch is a pretty normal guy who lives in LaSalle with his family and draws pictures for a living!

Finch, 42, was born and raised in Windsor. He attended Herman High School, but never finished – readily admitting he was an ‘aimless’ student that struggled through his classes. However, he did enjoy drawing, something he had started as a very young boy. “But it wasn’t something that people encouraged,” he says, “actually it was discouraged because it wasn’t seen as a potential career.” After leaving school, he worked as a security guard for about a year before being let go. At around the age of 20, he got serious about his dreams, knuckled down and began drawing about 12 hours a day.

Above: David and Meredith Finch collaborate on their latest Wonder Woman issue. Examples of Finch’s artist prowess. Photography courtesy DC Comics/DC Entertainment.

In 1994, after attending numerous conventions in the U.S. including events in Detroit and Chicago, he finally found an editor in New York and landed a 3-month internship, drawing backgrounds for the company that published Cyber Force, an extremely popular comic at the time. Eventually, David landed a permanent gig in Los Angles where he worked for about six years before “all the traffic and the fact t hat everyone was so far away caught up to him and he just wanted to get home.” After completing another year on the project, Finch was contacted by Joe Quesada of Marvel Comics, for whom he had done some work in New York and started drawings for Ultimate X-Men comics. He also did some illustrations on the Avengers which laid the groundwork for a lot of things that are seen in movies based on the popular characters. After The Avengers he drew Moon Knight, one of his most favourite characters. “It was a very dark persona,” he recalls, “and it was the most fun to draw.” In 2010 David left Marvel and signed a deal with DC comics which featured Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman as its core characters.

Life changed for David about 10 years ago when he met Meredith Fowle, a Belleville native who had just mov ed to Windsor. They met on the Internet and the relationship clicked. As Meredith puts it: “he was a shy guy and I was a single mom with two kids....and since neither of us was a barfly, the Internet seemed like a good connection.” She adds that, “I didn’t even know that comic books existed in their current form since I had grown up reading Archie and his friends. On our first date, after David mentioned he was a comic artist, I thought he meant newspapers and at the end of the day he gave me a couple of books that he had done. I was still skeptical and wanted to make sure the guy I was dating had a real job.” After attending her first convention, she realized he was “kind of a big deal” in comics. “He had lines of people standing for hours waiting just to get his signature or a sketch. He had his own house and two cars....and that pretty well iced it.” Incidentally, David still attends at least 10 conventions a year, even though he has resolved to cut back in order to spend more time with his family, which has grown to 3 children.

David and Meredith have forged what she calls a “very harmonious collaboration” – she writes the stories and he does the pictures for the latest iterations of Wonder ▼

Woman. After being rejected twice by DC, Meredith finally found the right story formula and the first edition was released this past November with new issues in the 6 book series coming every month through April. The books add up to a single story, and will eventually be sold in a bound, hardcover sleeve known as a ‘trade’. For the immediate future, David and Meredith will be doing Wond er Woman....in fact she says, “I’ll continue writing it until they kick me off, or David tells me he’s no longer going to draw it.” For his part, Finch says he wouldn’t mind drawing Wonder Woman for the next 20 years, even though it takes him about a month to complete one book.

Although Wonder Woman had undergone some changes from the original, Finch says she remains “a very strong feminist character – something that’s very core with her. I want her to be humanized as much as possible....a believable person.” The reading public obviously agrees, since sales of the books are up substantially from past years, despite the popularity of computer-available material. TV shows like the Big Bang Theory have made attending comic book conventions and stores, the cool thing to do. David adds, “and because of shows like that, I don’t have to be ashamed of my toy collection in the basement any more.”

While David is basically self-taught as an artist, he does credit the people in the comic-book industry that he’s met in his journey to success with helping him develop his talents, although in the end “it’s a solitary environment and is an incredibly tough job, particularly from a business standpoint.”

For tunately, he and his wife have found the formula to a successful partnership and it’s all done from the convenience of their home. Meredith handles the business end of things which enables David to concentrate on the drawings, and unlike many artists of today which have gone digital, he still uses pencils and paper. The pencil drawings are sent out for inking and color addition, then digitally transferred for printing.

The Finches live a fairly quiet life and because of their busy schedule, they have little time for hobbies. David exercises regularly and enjoys reading, while Meredith regularly runs after the kids have left for school and hubby has started his day behind the drawing board. Summing it up simply and in a totally unpretentious manner, David says, “yeah I sit in my basement and draw picture s,” while Meredith agrees, “it’s work and kids.”

BUILDING HOMES OF EXCEPTIONAL VALUE, CRAFTSMANSHIP AND QUALITY

THE WORK OF GINTAR HOMESi s not defined by one architectural style; however, company owner Ezio Tartaro does have a distinctive signature: Uncompromising quality. A selfproclaimed perfectionist and micro-manager, the homebuilder is not satisfied until the completed project has surpassed his own high standards.

“I have been in this business long enough to know that a contractor’s work must stand the test of time. Construction shortcuts, inferior materials and inexperienced workmanship all become apparent before the final coat of paint is dry,” Ezio says. “My contractor partners and my clients know that I won’t accept anything less than the highest standards on my job sites.”

After earning a sterling reputation building custom executive homes exuding such tasteful architectural presence that a passersby would slow down for closer inspection, Ezio was approached by several of his clients. “They had become empty nesters and were thinking of downsizing. They told me that they would move into a townhome if the home had the types of meticulous, luxury features and finishes found in custom homes,” he recalls. “We realized there was an opportunity to take customization and our attention to detail and apply it to neighbourhoods in the luxury townhouse market.”

TOWNHOME LIFESTYLE

Ezio gave serious consideration to what he believed townhomes should look like, inside and out. “A lot of townhouse developments appear to be a line of garages attached to front doors. A vehicle shouldn’t seem more important than its owner, so I chose to make the townhome’s entrance area the prominent feature,” he says.

Gintar Homes began work on the Fairways at Pointe West, transforming the rough acreage into a collection of high-end townhomes surrounding the private golf course of Pointe West. Next, Ezio was engaged to build custom finished luxury townhomes at the Fairways in the Seven Lakes community in LaSalle.

Gintar Homes continues to complete townhomes for new owners at Seven Lakes while also preparing for construction of the upcoming Lakewood Park Estates development in Tecumseh. Lakewood, like all Gintar Developments, will be offering homes with handsome, modern exteriors, delivering architectural interest, interior appointments with casual designer elegance and superior finishes that disce rning homeowners want.

“Judging by the brisk property sales in these different communities, it is obvious that people appreciate the style, value, energy efficiency, convenience and many other advantages of luxury living,” Ezio observes.

UNIQUE DESIGN

Another attraction for homebuyers is Gintar Homes vast array of options that enable his clients to truly make their new home their own. From selecting the style of handles on the custom kitchen cabinetry to determining how large the master bedroom should be, clients are encouraged to express their unique tastes and personal preferences.

“I really enjoy seeing my clients’ pleasure when they realize they can indeed have a feature stone wall, niches to showcase their artwork, an impressive wine cellar or a dressing room that is outfitted like a highend boutique. Their excitement is infectious!” Ezio says. “As a custom homebuilder, I’m comfortable revising architectural plans several times to suit my clients’ evolving vision of what they want their home to be.”

To ensure the outcome is what the clients expect, Ezio has his own micro-managing system of tracking clients’ preferences and changes; streamlining the construction process; and staying on s chedule and budget. “We do everything possible to make the journey to your new home hassle free and enjoyable for you,” Ezio assures homebuyers.

BUILDING FOR LIFE

After the keys are given to the new owners, Gintar Homes continue to be part of their lives. “My father, Gino, established our family construction business in 1979,” Ezio says. “We take very seriously the trust that people put in us to build their homes. If they have any concerns afterward, they can count on me personally.”

One of Gintar Homes areas of specialty has been retrofitting homes to become handicap accessible. “We believe in building with flexibility in mind. Having been extensively involved in renovating people’s homes to meet their accessibility needs, we understand how simple, cost effective features within a new home can help its owners in the future,” Ezio says.

“These considerations also make good sense now. Open concept floor plans bring family and friends together comfortably; extra-wide hallways permit furniture to be moved in without dread of scraping the walls; and the home is naturally more inclusive, accommodating any mobility challenges that both residents and visitors may have.”

AWARD WINNING RESULTS

Visionary architecture and attention to detail have garnered Gintar Contractors industry recognition, including six Golden Hammer awards for the Fairways at Seven Lakes community. Ezio’s peers have voted him the President of the Greater Windsor Home Builders Association for an unprecedented three consecutive years.

“These honours are greatly appreciated,” Ezio says. “However, the best compliment I can receive is when homeowners tell me their friends were over and they just can’t stop talking about their new place.”

“I believe Gintar Contractors has a moral responsibility to craft buildings that are going to endure and will resonate with people now and in the coming decades,” Ezio reflects. “We know we’ve done our job right when our clients are as proud of their new homes as we are.”

PAYING CASH

...A TRIBUTE TO MUSICAL ROYALTY

SINCE HIS PASSING IN 2003, Johnny Cash has attracted a multitude of new fans, many of them much younger than the demographic that first heard his rich bass voice in the late 50s on those recordings from the iconic Sun Studios in Memphis. His music – an eclectic mix of country, gospel and rockabilly, was infectious to say the least and in many cases was just pure fun.

Today, four Essex County guys are wowing audiences with their special tribute to ‘the Man in Black’.

‘Paying Cash’ was started in early 2013 by 34 year-old Jason Turcotte who had been urged by his late father, Larry Nelson Turcotte, a well known Bluegrass player in McGregor, to start a band of his own. For one reason or another, Turcotte had put the idea on the back burner and avoided the musical spotlight, until his father-inlaw, Mike Mccallum suggested they get together. Mccallum, who’s 67, has been a Johnny Cash devotee since the beginning and is an accomplished guitar player who can perform all the familiar licks that propelled Cash to fame. One of his friends, Dave Avellino, was added as the bass player and several months later, Tim Gallant, who had answered a computer ad, was introduced as the drummer.

According to Tim, “it all began as fun, but things changed when we first played for an audience. The reaction was unbelievable and we knew it was serious by the number of bookings we’ve received since then. In fact, we’ve become so popular that I left my other band to become an exclusive Paying Cash member.”

Success has come from many directions. In addition to appearances at local fundraisers, Paying Cash has also played the Essex Fun Fest, the Harrow Fair, the Harrow Harvest Festival and the

Lasalle Beer Festival. The group calls the Colchester Bar and Grill near Harrow its home.....where the guys perform their magic at least twice a month. They recently debuted at the Venue Music Hall in downtown Windsor which has hosted groups like Tea Party. Paying Cash is booked solidly every Friday and Saturday night for the next six months and for the first time, the band will be featured at the Lasalle Strawberry Festival in June.

The group’s most bizarre gig was late last year at the recently closed Windsor Jail on Brock Street, which had offered two days of public tours. As Gallant says: “We contacted the people at the jail and they jumped at our offer. It was a lot of fun. We played for about 6 hours both days and everyone there really loved it. Since Johnny Cash had himself performed in penitentiaries, we felt it was appropriate for us to do the same.” It was the first time in Canada that a band had performed inside the walls of a correctional facility and since then, the group is pondering the possibility of a prison tour in the future, but the guys are tight-lipped about their progress.

Attending a three-hour Paying Cash show is a surrealistic experience – lead singer and acoustic guitar player Jason Turcotte has an amazing voice with the same rich timbre and resonance that was the signature of Johnny Cash. A truck driver by trade, Turcotte is married and is the father of 3 children.

Mike Mccallum is a retired tool and mould maker and has been playing Johnny Cash music for more than 40 years. His mother bought him his first guitar when he was very young and as he says, “I’ve been glued to it ever since.”

40 Windsor Life
Paying Cash Left Dave Avellino, Jason Turcotte, Tim Gallant, Mike Mccallum.

Dave Avellino, in his late 50s, was a guitar player until he joined Paying Cash, where he learned how to play the bass. And, unlike most bassists of today, he performs the Cash standards on a big upright bass ‘fiddle’. After 33 years of service, he retired from Canada Post and still manages to keep busy repairing farm machinery and cars. He’s also a member of the Hospice Wellness Band.

Windsor-born Tim Gallant is 36 and lives in Essex with his wife. He’s been playing the drums since he was a kid and has supplied the beat for groups of many types of music including hip-hop, funk, rock and blues across Southwestern Ontario and Michigan for the past 12 years. He’s a material handler for Schukra....a local automotive supplier.

While members of Paying Cash agree that a full-time career in music would be an ideal situation, they understand how tough the profession is and are quite content to be in the moment. They have been getting a tremendous amount of support from Gino and Jumpin Gerry on 99.1 Cjam playing their cd and providing live on air interviews. As Tim puts it, “you gotta be realistic and have a day job. We’re very happy with the way our lives are going.”

Initially ‘Paying Cash’ had its own instrumental arrangements with the vocals basically carrying the show. Fans are always saying, “if we close our eyes, we are hearing Johnny Cash.”

As the group evolves, members are arranging the tunes more like the originals and eventually hope to have note-for-note renditions with the same sound quality as the original Johnny Cash efforts.

Learning about ‘Paying Cash’ is a snap... simply log on to www.payingcash.ca for bios, contact information, pictures, live recordings and play dates. The group is also on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. “We hope to take this thing as far as we can,” says Tim, “we’ve already been invited to go to Montreal, Nashville and Los Angeles...but first we have to be sure the circumstances are right – that the money is there and our jobs are secure. Everything has to come together before we go.”

‘Paying Cash’ is a band designed for music lovers of any age, whether the venue is a bar, a concert hall, a birthday or corporate party, or a festival. The shows are upbeat and a lot of fun...not to mention the familiarity of the musical legacy left behind by the passing of the great Johnny Cash. A New Concept in Collaborative Denture Services

FORMERLY THE SOUTH WINDSOR DENTURE CLINIC, the Denture Center Windsor ON is welcoming its patients to its new facility, opening in April at 2601 Lauzon Pkwy and near E.C. Row Expressway and Highways 3, 42 and 401. “The reason we have moved is so we can be more easily accessible to our patients and dental professionals in our community,” says Eric Kukucka, denturist and owner of the new center.

What has not changed is the denture team’s commitment to its patients. “We strive to provide service and denture products at the highest level,” Eric says.

To further that aim, “we are working with dentists through our new Dental Professionals Program, a collaborative care model,” Eric says. At the heart of the program is ongoing communication between the patient’s dentist, denturist, oral sur geon, dental laboratory and dental materials manufacturer. “Our program is already wellreceived and extremely successful.”

“Through my years of practice, I have found that some denture wearers don’t realize they still need the care of a dentist. They haven’t had a dental checkup in 10 or 20 years,” Eric says. “The Denture Center Windsor ON is bringing patients and the dental community together. The wh ole team gets involved.”

“The most important thing is to get the patient examined by a dentist who can spot early signs of lesions or other mouth concerns,” Eric explains.

If the patient doesn’t have a dentist, the Denture Center Windsor ON has a referral list. “We work with every dentist in the city,” says Eric.

Always at the forefront of denture technology, Eric is a key note speaker leader for Ivoclar Vivadent, one of the world’s largest dental material manufacturers. “This company is a leader in dental innovation and it’s truly a pleasure to work so closely with them,” he says.

The Denture Center Windsor ON also enjoys a relationship with Nobel Biocare, a world leader in the field of innovative implantbased dental restorations. Nobel Biocare offers dental implant systems, high-precision individualized prosthetics and CAD/CAM systems as well as diagnostics, treatment planning, guided surgery solutions and biomaterials.

The centre’s denturists are able to rejuvenate a patient’s smile by working collaboratively with an oral surgeon or dentist who places the implants. The Denturist then restores the patient’s quality of life with lifelike prosthetics.

“I am proud to have James M. Bennett, who brings 40 years of experience to the Center,” Eric says. “Prior to becoming a Denturist, Jim worked in his father’s denture laboratory, working for dentists. Jim's decades of experience provide him with unparalleled technical skills.”

Using materials from both companies, the denturists at the Denture Center Windsor ON are able to create complete dentures, partial dentures and implant dentures. “Each patient has specific needs and a budget, so we have three categories of dentures to meet everyone’s wants and needs,” Eric says.

“Our master class level denture is the best prosthetic available, using the most esthetic, highest quality denture teeth, Phonares II, and the IvoBase precision press denture processing unit.”

“There are exciting advances happening in dentures that local dental professionals will find of interest,” Eric says. “To inform and update them, we are hosting continuing educational opportunities for our colleagues here at our centre.”

To keep new and loyal patients smiling, the Denture Center Windsor ON is happy to serve, performing same day denture relines, adjustments and while you wait repairs. Eric realizes, “Things happen. Just give us a call at 519-969-6316. Chances are we will be able to restore your dentures very quickly.”

Creating Floral Designs That People

Love to Receive

“A single rose or one bunch of tulips is a sweet, affordable little luxury that uplifts your day or brings a smile to someone you care about,” observes Krissy Thiessen, owner of the Flower Shop at Thiessen’s.

Arrangements and bouquets are ready to go, kept fresh in the cooler of the stylish showroom and floral shop at 400 Talbot Rd. E., Leamington. Krissy brings in different varieties of flowers weekly. “Most of our work stems from custom orders,” the floral designer says. “We carefully listen to our clients to get to know their preferences and style. It’s intriguing to learn if it is contemporary, rustic, whimsical or traditional.”

Marking its first anniversary, the Flower Shop at Thiessen’s is always delighted to be part of someone else’s celebration.

“Birthdays, anniversaries, holidays and other occasions are more festive when flowers are adorning the room or being delivered to your door,” Krissy believes.

Her determination to make every creation perfect is appreciated by wedding couples and their event coordinators and decorators. Krissy tells them, “Bring in your colour palette, theme and vision and we’ll design th e bouquets, centerpieces, ceremony florals and more. Vintage, shabby chic, tone on tone or loads of bling - I’m obsessed with the little details.”

Sharing over 65 years combined experience in the industry, the shop’s entire floral team is exceptionally perceptive. “‘No’ is not in our vocabulary,” says Krissy. When the

Presenting the Art of Tile for Your One-of- a- Kind Home

Stunning artwork isn’t typically displayed horizontally, unless it is a gorgeous porcelain tile by Palazzi Bros. Tile Ltd. A plain wall can become gallery-worthy when it is transformed into a focal point, clad in sculpted, metallic, tumbled or glazed tile.

Palazzi is your studio for beautiful, distinctive produc ts for your home.

In its newly renovated showroom at 3636 Walker Rd., Windsor, Palazzi has unveiled its 2015 tile collection, offering an exciting plethora of options for elevating home style. (A second Palazzi location is at 322 Christina St., Sarnia).

Combining practicality with impeccable design sense, Palazzi stocks large quantities of tile from the world’s leading flooring manufacturers. Handy homeowners, interior decorators and contractors find what they prefer in Palazzi’s impressive inventory of tile, stone, hardwood flooring products as well as plumbing fixtures and a unique selection of bathroom vanities.

Now celebrating 55 years in business, the Palazzi family is excited about the latest arrivals in their Windsor showroom. “There are so many possibilities to express your style at home,” says Paula Mele, Palazzi sales representative. Palazzi’s design service can assist customers in making savvy selections.

The emerging trends in kitchen and bathroom wall and floor tile reveal streamlined, clean looks in nature’s colours, like beach sand, sky blue, seashell white and pebble grey. “The subtly of natures' hues are very appropriate for home decorating. We love to bring the outdoor colours indoors,” Paula notes.

When tile is formed to resemble wet, rolling waves or water bubbles, senses are heightened. “These artistic tiles make their own design statement,” Paula observes.

The Porcelanosa porcelain tile collection becomes interactive art since people can’t resist running their fingers over its randomly sculpted blocks and other 3D patterns. Clean, bright and timeless, Porcelanosa tile may be accompanied by its own bathroom fixtures and furniture, such as floating vanities, deep oval bathtubs, modern chrome faucets and rectangular trough sinks, now all available at Palazzi.

“We import our porcelain tiles from Spain and Italy, buying direct from the manufacturers to get the latest products at competitive prices for our customers,” says Paula. Available in every price range, Palazzi has a great selection of in-stock tile to suit every budget.

Eager to share new concepts in innovative flooring design and technology, Palazzi carries a huge range. “Hardwood is outstanding for comfortable family living,” says Paula.

Hardwood warmed by a soft sheen and rustic finish can give a family home the grace of a country manor. Rather than diminishing in beauty, ensuing years of natural wear w ill enhance the hardwood’s appearance. “These floors will last a lifetime.”

Another enduring and in demand product is granite countertops. Palazzi has decades of experience in designing, fabricating and installing granite, marble and quartz countertops. “We stock full size slabs of stone for our customers to see. It is much easier – and more exciting – for them to choose from slabs than small samples ,” Paula says.

The best selection of quality flooring products at the best prices can always be found at Palazzi. The tile and flooring experts also offer professional installation of everything they carry.

“Visit our showroom to be inspired,” Paula invites. “Your design solution is waiting at Palazzi.”

4072 Walker Rd., Windsor | 519.969.0152 | www.lighting4life.com LIGHTING BOUTIQUE

WHEN RAY PITTAO ORIGINALLY OPENED The Lighting Boutique on Walker Road 46 years ago, the business sat alone in a field. That did not deter customers from finding the store and telling others about its incredible selection and the helpful advice and service they received. Over time, other retailers began to fill the surrounding fields around The Lighting Boutique, proving that Ray has always been a vision ary. “Dad has been a great leader for us and a great motivator to bring us and our family business to the level where we are today,” says Andrea Pittao, Ray’s daughter.

Two years ago, the Pittao family expanded their store, into a towering 30,000 sq. foot building. The Lighting Boutique offers more choices now than ever, with table and floor lamps, pendants, sconces, chandeliers, ceiling fans and oth er products in traditional, transitional, contemporary, modern restoration, and many other styles to complement every type of architecture, style and décor. They have paired with many new manufacturers, which each offers unique, and individual styles for many different tastes.

The three Pittao children – Andrea, Paul and Ray Jr. – make up the dynamic management team with each one settled into their own niche. Ray Jr. handles the purchasing for the Lighting Boutique and oversees the commercial work. Paul manages sales in the Appliance Shoppe, and Andrea puts together lighting packages for homes.

Andrea helps homeowners and builders with new and renovated residences. She has formed partnerships with many builders in

Windsor-Essex and Chatham-Kent, illuminating their model homes and creating competitively priced packages for whole home lighting. Andrea takes the time to sit and create a unique package for each style of home and homeowner. Whether it be a home renovation, or a new build, each home is different, we recognize that and can create a specialized package. Andrea pairs with not only builders, but also with each job a builder presents her with, and strives to make the perfect package for every unique look, style, and budget a homeowner has. “Our goal is to create a comfortable environment that reflects each customer’s individual style,” Andrea says. She often goes to the home to assess the quantity and size of lighting that is required and then coordinates the various products according to functionality, budget and individual taste. “We recognize that building a new home is a large milestone, and we strive to make this a memorable, and happy experience for you where you will continue to enjoy your choices for many years. When illuminating your home, I make certain the lighting is appropriate in every way.”

That kind of individualized attention to each customer’s needs is how The Lighting Boutique has been able to steadily expand in a competitive market. “As an independent family business, we value the commitment and personal service that we find in other family businesses, such as Hinkley,” Andreas says. “We confidently recommend Hinkley’s quality craftsmanship and materials to our customers.”

Your Place Or Mine? • 2015 49

Hinkley offers chandeliers, bath fixtures, sconces, pendants, outdoor and landscape lighting. A 4th generation family-run business, Hinkley has been designing and manufacturing lighting since 1922. It is a legacy company customers know they can trust. Hinkley is internationally recognized for combining cutting edge technology and beautiful design. The company enforces the highest possible quality control standards and offers an industry-leading warranty.

Hinkley also prides itself on helping customers “find the lighting they will love” with an extensive range of products, styles, finishes, price points and even complimentary style guides to make buying lighting easy and fun.

Homeowners turn to Hinkley because their name is synonymous with style, quality and value. Hinkley sets the standard for afford able luxury lighting and ensure its fixtures look just as beautiful off as they do on!

At The Lighting Boutique, Andrea recognizes that “Lighting is a vital part of everyone’s lives. Besides being necessary, it is a form of art. Treat it like jewelry adorning your house!”

The Lighting Boutique is also a terrific source for decorative mirrors, wall art, trays, the latest trending bathroom vanities, and many other types of decor. It also houses the Appliance Shoppe. The Appliance Shoppe has the latest innovations in appliances for the laundry room, indoor and outdoor kitchens, home bar and man cave. The Appliance Shoppe carries all major appliance brands and offers many options. Fifteen vignettes feature the latest product lines from companies like Thermador, Viking,

KitchenAid, Bosch and Electrolux providing customers with innovative design ideas and helping them visualize how they would appear in their homes.

With two showrooms under one roof there is no longer any reason to leave Windsor for the best selection of stylish lighting and competitive appliance prices.

Evolving from Ray’s original small business to one of Canada’s largest residential lighting shops, The Lighting Boutique caters to customers in the store, in their homes, by phone and online at lighting4life.com. Local people have the advantage of examining floor models in the physical store, although it certainly doesn't limit out-of-town customers from experiencing the same treatment as the locals. Andrea assures, “This is a fabulous place to suit all of your lighting and appliance needs!”

DAYUS ROOFING

On Top Since 1920

Has your 25 year shingle only lasted 10 years? The vast majority of roofing systems that have failed prematurely are organic based shingle roofs, which have become a major cause of concern for hundreds of homeowners in Windsor and Essex County.

In today’s roofing market, asphalt shingles are manufactured using a fiberglass base sheet, the key ingredient missing from organic shingles. Products today should provide homeowners with a more reasonable life expectancy. However, shingle manufacturers have further complicated the situation by inflating their warranties to unrealistic levels. “Almost every roofing system we sell, regardless of the material, comes stamped with a misleading Lifetime ‘Limited’ Warranty,” says Frank Dayus IV, President of Dayus Roofing.

The failure of organic shingles has opened the door for alternative roofing solutions. Top of mind in this category is metal roofing. But is a metal roof really the last roof you will ever have to buy? Frank Dayus IV comments that, “We have seen many metal roofing systems fail for different reasons. Stone coated systems have lost their coating and paint finishes have faded. He adds, "If you read the fine print of metal roofing install guides and warranties, you will find some eye-opening language. Paint finishes are limited to 30 years; tear off installations are recommended vs. overtop; you must be careful or avoid walking on your roof; and there is no definitive language against leaks.”

Rubber Roofing systems have you covered with a Lifetime, non-prorated roofing warranty against leaks. Th e most durable roof on the market today, Rubber Roofs carry the industry’s highest hail rating and you certainly do not have to worry about walking on

them. Manufactured in Calgary, Alberta with up to 95% recycled materials, rubber roofs are environmentally friendly and are designed to handle the extremes of the Canadian climate. Furthermore, Rubber Roofs will help to lower your energy bills and may save you money on your home insurance. “Rubber roofing is not new to Dayus Roofing. We have been installing these systems since 2005 and they are performing beautifully,” says Frank Dayus IV. “One of the reasons Dayus prefers the rubber roof is the traditional roof design and installation. Every re-roof starts with a tear off and thorough deck inspection. You are throwing money away investing in a roof without making sure the foundation is solid.”

Each shingle course installed in a rubber roof extends underneath the next exposed row and beyond to create a double layer water shedding system, compared to a tongue and groove style that metal shingles employ which are more susceptible to leaking. Aside from the vast technical advantages, rubber roofs are absolutely stunning and will add curb appeal. With both slate and cedar shake profiles available, rubber roofs are designed to fit the style of any home. Rather than appearing cold and commercial, Rubber Roofs look great on residences, providing a warmer, more natural look.

As Dayus Roofing approaches 100 years in business spanning four generations, Frank Dayus IV reflects on what has led to Dayus Roofing's longevity. “Regardless of the roofing system you choose, a high level of workmanship and attention to detail is at the heart of every successful system. That's what our customers received when my great-grandfather started Dayus Roofing in 1920, and that's what our customers are going to receive today.”

Offering solutions that perform, Dayus Roofing takes the worry out of choosing a roofing contractor and ensures you have peace of mind in protecting your most valuable asset, your home.

BAY-VIEW GLASS & MIRROR

Revealing Barely There Railings and Shower Enclosures

It’s great to have your work noticed and appreciated. However, for Bay-view Glass & Mirror, one the greatest compliments the company receives after completing another project is: “It almost looks like there is nothing there!”

“With our barrier free, frameless glass shower enclosures, your eye is drawn to the beautifully tile d wall or stylish fixtures,” says Eric LaMarre of Bay-View Glass & Mirror. “And now, we are making it possible to have a totally clear view from a balcony or staircase with our latest solution, the TAPER-LOC® Dry Glazed Railing System.”

TAPER-LOC® is engineered to support sturdy panels of 1/2” tempered glass without requiring support posts or a top rail. “The panels affix to the bottom rail, connecting with a mechanism hidden within a track on the floor,” Eric explains. “It is a clean look that gives the illusion there is nothing between you and the view.”

Able to withstand hot summers and freezing winters, the tempered glass panels work indoors or outside. Unlike a balcony with gaps between the railings, TAPER-LOC®’s continuous panels form a protective shield in front of people enjoying the scenery beyond. “It’s perfect for homeowners living on the waterfront,” Eric finds.

Clients also enlist Bay-View Glass & Mirror to design, craft and install private office enclosures entirely made of glass from floor to ceiling and accessed by glass doors. “Many people love the simple, elegant design statement that glass makes,” Eric notes.

Glass elements work with every style and in just about every se tting, visually opening up a small office, letting light into an urban industrial loft, bringing Euro chic to a custom shower, providing a practical, washable backsplash in the kitchen and accentuating an eye-catching focal point.

One of the many exciting things that BayView Glass & Mirror does is custom backpainted glass. “We’re the only company that does it,” says Eric.“Instead of having a desk, c offee table or vanity built of wood and finished in a stain, varnish, paint or laminate, imagine a custom piece, built to your exact needs, done all in glass,” Eric says. “It could be left clear or you could have the back of the glass painted in nearly any colour your heart desires.” The glass protects the special paint finish while providing a surface that is easily wiped.

Another application is a feature wall paneled in back-painted glass. Installed as a fireplace surround, back-painted glass shimmers with the flame’s reflection. Either makes a powerful impact in the home or business.

Back-painted glass is so water resistant it can be part of a shower system.

Eric and his father, Al, and their team are experts in the fabrication and installation of custom barrier free showers equipped with sliding glass doors. “Our Serenity Series shower doesn’t have a curb, so if you have mobility concerns or kids, everyone can safely get in and out,” Eric says.

The shower’s sliding glass door moves quietly on roller bearings for easy access. The Serenity’s unique roller system operates above the header support bar that spans the top of the glass shower enclosure. The Laguna Series sliding door system h as on trend barn door style hardware mounted overhead.

Making simple mirrors to large custom projects, Bay-View Glass & Mirror products can be experienced in the 26-year-old company’s showroom. Eric assures, “We do it all.”

the new source

for distinctive home builders, designers & owners

Practical

and innovative since it was founded by Ken Truax in 1933, Truax Lumber & Building Materials in Kingsville has responded to frequent customer requests by opening Truax Design Centre in Windsor.

Opening on May 4th to trade professionals and the public, the new centre will display a huge variety of on trend residential construction products. “For example, there will be 150 very different door handles on view, plus we have access to every other door handle in the universe,” says Jeremy Truax.

He believes, “Truax Design Centre will fill a void. We will showcase moderate to high end products that you can’t find at a big box store – and we offer them at prices that are definitely competitive.”

The centre is a natural extension of Truax Lumber & Building Materials. For more than eight decades, the independent family business has catered to builders, bringing in the materials required to construct new homes and renovate older residences. “Most of the builders that we deal with didn’t have a design source they felt comfortable referring their customers to,” says Jeremy. “And our lumberyard customers were telling us they couldn’t get unique or higher end designer products to complete their homes.”

Another impetus for opening Truax Design Centre was greater convenience for Windsorites. “We do

a lot of business with Windsor builders, supplying mouldings, doors, fixtures and hardware for the new homes they are building to order. A number of their clients did not want to drive to our Kingsville store to make their selections,” Jeremy explains. “Now those clients will be able to come to our central location at 3585 Rhodes Dr., Windsor. We work with builders to have all the items relating to their options lists readily on view.”

As a service to the homebuilder and their clients, a knowledgeable Truax staff person is on hand to explain the differences between standard level products and optional upgrades. “We can walk homeowners through everything and help them make the choices that are right for them,” says Jeremy.

Interior designers and decorators can also expect courteous, competent ser vice at Truax Design Centre. “If we don’t already have samples of certain products they want to specify, we can almost always obtain them,” Jeremy assures.

Discerning homeowners, designers, architects and builders have frequently indicated they are willing to budget a few more dollars to obtain something distinctive, Jeremy finds. Truax Design Centre has an appealing array of interior doors and mouldings; hardware; kitchen and bathroom cabinetry, sinks, faucets and more. “We are specializing in hard to find lines, such as Aurum Hardware, Rocky Mountain and Baldwin Reserve hardware,” Jeremy says.

More than a resource for outstanding, uncommon products, Truax Design Centre is also the place where trade professionals and homeowners can get answers. Local builders and designers can anticipate exclu sive invitations to upcoming special events created for their benefit.

“Our family has been supplying designers, builders and homeowners for a long time,” Jeremy says. “It is exciting to be able to bring a whole new level of selection and service to people who take pride in the homes they create and live in.”

Are You Gonna Kiss Me Or Not’s honest, unabashed declaration of real feelings is what today’s only established married country music duo is all about. Fans in southwestern Ontario will have opportunity to experience that live when Thompson Square performs on the Colosseum stage at Caesars Windsor at 9 p.m., Sat., Apr. 4th.

Thompson Square is Shawna and Kiefer Thompson. Superb storytellers and natural entertainers that also appeal to pop and mainstream audiences, the couple sing with just enough twang to keep everyone mindful of their country roots.

Shawna was born in Chatom, Alabama; her husband is a native son of Miami, Oklahoma. Originally solo artists, they met at a singing contest over 15 years ago and realized that when they blended their voices, they produced something special.

Over a decade of hard work followed as Thompson Square tried to get their music noticed. Their sound evolved with lyrics and melodies that can be in turn tender, feisty or ready to party. After Are You Gonna Kiss Me Or Not, Thompson Square scored consecutive hits with

I Got You, Glass, If I Didn’t Have You, Just Feels Good, Everything I Shouldn’t Be Thinking About, Testing The Water and I Can’t Outrun You.

Written by the Thompsons, Jason Sellers and Paul Jenkins, If I Didn’t Have You also achieved the top spot on the Country Airplay chart in 2013.

Caesars Windsor welcomes chart topping country artists Thompson Square to the Colosseum stage at 9 pm, Sat., April 4th.

By the time Thompson Square arrives in Windsor, their newest single will have been released and their third album will be about to launch. On the Colosseum stage, “we are probably playing some new stuff from our album,” Keifer says. “It’s extremely different from what you’ve heard from us in the past.”

“We’ll do all the hits, of course.” Keifer promises a “pretty high energy show.”

Thompson Square enjoys playing to Canadian audiences, which Keifer observes are similar to fans south of the border. “Culturally, we’re not that far apart.”

“Canadians are not quite as rowdy, I don’t think,” he says. “When we play Canada, there is a lot more attention being paid to our music, which I really appreciate.”

“I love our fans. They are very cool.” Multi-generational and multi-dimensional, “they don’t want just one thing” in music. “They expect a bunch of different things from us.”

Keifer and Shawna let their music reveal a lot about themselves as a married couple and as artists. “I know our fans love to be able to hear kind of what goes on behind closed doors,” Keifer says. “We like to make them feel a part of our life.”

He points to a Thompson Square song, That’s So Me and You. It tells of how the pair met and s ang for “tips in a pickle jar” before finally getting discovered.

“AND OH, IT’S ALL A LITTLE FUNNY WE DIDN'T HAVE NO MONEY, BUT WE HAD US AND A LOT OF LOVE TO HOLD ON TO THAT’S SO ME AND YOU”

Love in all its forms comes through Thompson Square’s music. A special edition of their album, Just Feels Good, includes a bonus track, What Am I Gonna Do? (Daddy’s Song). It was Shawna’s tribute to her father, who died in 2012. Wrapped in the lyrics that Shawna, Keifer, Kyle Jacobs and Vicky McGehee wrote is a recorded snippet of Shawna as a four-year-old singing a gospel hymn, accompanied by her father, Mickey Mcilwain, playing the banjo.

“It’s a gorgeous song and she cried throughout the whole time of recording” of Daddy’s Song, says Kiefer. “We had to go through it several times to get one good take.” Shawna’s “rip your guts out” genuine emotion comes through on the final cut. “It was one of the hardest songs I’ve ever had to write.”

He has personally found, “If you ask anyone what their favourite song is, it’s going to be a ballad.” Whenever Keifer is feeling down, a sad country song speaks to him.

“Country music is stories. It’s a real life. It’s taking the good with the bad,” he reflects. “I love sad cou ntry songs.”

Sad or upbeat, Thompson Square’s music pleases fans and industry critics. The band has won loads of awards, including Vocal Duo of the Year at the 2012 Country Music, Academy of Country Music, Country Music Television and American Country Awards.

New Music Weekly Magazine has nominated Thompson Square in the Best Country Duo and Country Group categories of the 2015 New Music Awards.

“Validation comes from our peers and our fans. I think just getting nominations is validation in itself,” Keifer says. “We do the best music that we can. We try to stay true to what we want to do and what we love.”

As country music’s favourite husband and wife team performing and recording today, Thompson Square looks to trailblazing couple, June Carter Cash and Johnny Cash. Acknowledging the trials the o riginal duo experienced, “the love they had for each other was unprecedented,” says Keifer. “I would definitely say we have that kind of love.” He recalls on Thompson Square’s tour bus one night, his wife heard the Cashes singing on the radio. Crying, Shawna said, “That reminded me of us.”

Spending time just kicking back together keeps the relationship in balance. On their downtime, Shawna and Keifer take their four wheelers out into the country or grab their rods and go fishing. “I’m teaching her how to shoot guns right now,” Keifer says. His wife supports his obsession with motorcycling and his tinkering with an old Bronco that Keifer is restoring. They both love animals. “We’re into everything the same.”

“A lot of my hobbies are rooted in music,” Keifer says. Testing new amps and gear is as fun as it is vital to Thompson Square’s sound.

Although it’s rewarding, “it’s not a normal kind of lifestyle we live,” Keifer admits. “A lot of holidays, birthdays and anniversaries are spent on the road.” Remembering an enjoyable roller skating birthday party and other jubilations squeezed around touring, he adds, “We do what we can.”

Noting that Thompson Square will be performing at Caesars Windsor on Easter weekend, Keifer says, “There’s not a whole lot of Easter egg hunting going on on the bus.”

The audience, however, is in for a treat. Tickets for Thompson Square’s concert at Caesars Windsor start at $25 each and can be purchased at the box office.

EMPLOYMENT AND LABOUR LAW SPECIALISTS

comprehensive legal firm specializing in business and corporate law; commercial litigation; employment and labour law; estate and trusts law; litigation; real estate law; and patent and trademark law.

An entire department is dedicated to employment and labour law. Four partners and four associates take care of the needs of both public and private sector employe rs. “This is not something we dabble in - it is our exclusive area of practice,” says Partner Nancy Jammu-Taylor. “Our department is unique in Windsor-Essex County.”

Noteworthy McTague Law employment and labour law colleagues include George W. King, a partner who was recently made a judge in the Ontario Superior Court (Federal) and former associate Drew Dilkens, now Windsor’s new mayor. “We are very proud of them,” Nancy says.

Two new Associates, John-Pierre Karam and M. Claire Bebbington, have joined the expanding department, which also includes Associates Jennifer Astrologo and Garth Kidd.

Partner Stephen Roberts is one of only 11 professionals in Ontario certified as a Specialist in Workplace Safety and Insurance Law by the Law Society of Upper Canada and practices exclusively in this area.

“Our team strives to provide the best possible service to our clients,” says Partner David Amyot.

“That begins by listening to their concerns and being very responsive to their needs.”

One of the most intriguing aspects of the legal work is the clients’ range of industries. “We serve growers in Kingsville; manufacturers in Windsor; and many other businesses in Southwestern Ontario,” notes Partner Michael Wills.

Employers naturally encounter many challenges in operating their businesses. McTague Law becomes an integral part of their team, handling employment issues when they arise and helping to identify and establish policies that protect the company. Nancy says, “As a full service employment and labour law group, we advise and represent our clients in collective bargaining; labour arbitrations; union avoidance; wrongful dismissal actions; workplace investigations; workplace management training; sale of a business or startup; plant closures and restructuring; and matters relating to the Ontario Labour Relations Act; Employment Standards Act; Canada Labour Code; Human Rights Code; Occupational Health and Safety Act; Workplace Safety and Insurance Act; Police Law; Freedom of Information and Privacy Law; and sickness and accident/disability insurance.

“Because we specialize in this very critical area of the law, other legal firms refer their clients’ labour and employment matters to us,” David says. “We are honoured to be entrusted with their clients and do our utmost to protect their interests.”

Although many of McTague Law’s clients are in the Windsor-Essex County region, the firm represents a number of employers across Ontario.

“Our firm is local and invested in our community,” says Michael. “We donate our time and expertise in support of various boards, committees and charities.”

As a service to their clients and anyone else who is interested, the team members host labour law and workplace safety and insurance law seminars regularly in Windsor. “These events are complementary. People who have attended have remarked that our presentations are very informative and useful,” says Stephen.

Michael observes, “It is exciting that our department is growing so steadily. I believe this is indicative of the business opportunities and prosperity that are to be found in Windsor-Essex County.”

HUNTER DOUGLAS

Operate Your Motorized Window Coverings By Mobile App

(NC) – According to the experts, motorized shades are hotter than ever – and no wonder. Energy management, convenience, glare control, privacy and security, UV protection for furniture and carpeting, plus an increasing number of skylights and hard-to-reach windows are cited as the leading reasons why.

With or without power, Hunter Douglas window treatments excel as window dressing solutions. Now the company has announced its new Platinum App to give you more precise control than ever before of its battery-powered products from your mobile device.

This is the first ‘shade-control’ app available as a free download with no service fees. The Platinum App is controlled directly from an Apple mobile device – and the setup is easy and requires minimal hardware. After a few short, preliminary steps, the app lets you operate all the Hunter Douglas window coverings in your home (or in your rooms) at the same time, or one shade at a time – in real time. Or, you can use the timer feature to schedule your shade movement for later. Operate the window coverings by scene (activity), by room or by time.

The Platinum App puts you in control without complicated wiring or the added expense of an electrician. Other benefits at your fingertips will be:

• Enhanced energy efficiency: You can set your shades to lower when the sun is the hottest or raise them in the winter to let in the solar heat to help manage heating and cooling costs. You can also adjust window covering vanes and slats to harvest light deep into the room to reduce the need for artificial lighting.

• Convenience: With the app, any media room takes on a “Hollywoodian” air. Prefer your window dressings positioned a particular way when you’re reading? No problem. Create a personalized “scene” with the app and it will move the window treatments to the exact position you wish, whenever you wish. It’s simple to program and easy to use. In fact, a single swipe of the app’s slider bar s can tilt and raise or lower the product.

• Glare control: Having trouble with the glare on your computer screen while finishing that proposal for the office or emails to friends and family? The app gives you total control.

• Privacy and security: Many homes these days are built cheek-to-jowl, requiring something special to guard one’s privacy and security…and comfort level. The app lets you adjust your window fashions for when you are not at home. Set scenes and raise them

during the day, lower them at night, or raise some and lower others to avoid suspicion and help protect your home.

• Difficult-to-reach windows: We all love the look of skylights and oversized windows, but most of us don’t like having to get out the ladders to reach them. Hunter Douglas points to its SkyLift, a new system that covers skylight window openings of up to 80 square feet. The Platinum App works on products with this option as well, for control above and beyond expectations.

• Child safety: Motorized treatments are free of operating cords making them ideal for homes with tots underfoot.

Motorization has gone mobile and it’s not going back. More information is available online at www.hunterdouglas.ca. www.newscanada.com

As a full service town, it offers a hospital, recreational centre, golf courses, marina, schools and of course, beautiful Point Pelee National Park.”

Buyers wanting single family homes can find lots or select from available plans for ranch style and two-storey residences starting at 1,350 sq. ft. with a base price of $269,000. “All of our homes feature handsome architecture and desirable amenities conducive to family living such as modern open concept layouts, spacious rooms and the only residential development in Leamington to offer fibre internet to the home,” Ralph says.

Southwind Estate’s townhouses are geared to the empty nesters and seniors who would appreciate a convenient, smart layout paired with features that would enable owners to continue enjoying self-sufficiency in their own homes for years to come – features such as a front door that can be accessed smoothly without the hindrance of a step at the entrance; hallways that are designed extra wide to accommodate walkers or wheelchairs and are reinforced to support handrails if needed; and bathrooms that can be fitted with a doorless shower that permits the homeowner barrier-free access.

Everything needed for a full home life in the single-storey townhome –kitchen, living area, bedrooms, bathrooms and laundry – is on the main floor. There is also a full basement that the homeowners can use for storage, hobbies or whatever else they choose. The two car garage securely accommodates vehicles, bicycles, golf clubs and more. Quality construction and building materials result in a home engineered to last. With units starting at 1,250 sq. ft., the townhome offers excellent value at approximately $200,000.

Two houses in Leamington’s Southwind Estates are already built and four more are under construction. Equinox Realty currently has available 24 single-family lots and 18 townhomes. The townhomes will be constructed by 21 time award winning Nor-Built Homes, builder of over 400 homes since 1988.

FIREPLACES BY MARIO

For That Cozy Glow Which Makes Such a Difference

One of the best experiences of a Canadian winter is thawing in the glow and warmth of your own fireplace. If you missed out on that pleasure again this past winter, Fireplaces by Mario can put a hearth in your home in short order.

Since opening Fireplaces by Mario at 3118 Jefferson Blvd. nine years ago, Mario and Phyllis Sementilli have helped hundreds of Windsor-Essex County residents enjoy the heat and ambiance of natural gas and electric fireplaces, stoves and inserts.

Fireplaces by Mario carries the latest models by Kingsman, Continental, Heat & Glo and other respected manufacturers, all backed by excellent warranties. “We want you to feel secure and happy about your fireplace,” Mario says.

Every year brings new styles and options. In natural gas fireplaces, clean faced or flush design allows for brick or tile installation over the fireplace frame. Traditional style logs look more realistic than ever. There is also the option of glass marbles, crystals or rocks.

A gas fireplace gives you control over the areas you heat in the house. Zone heating can keep energy costs down during the winter. The primary reason people love gas fireplaces, however, is the convenience. With the touch of a remote control or thermostat, the fireplace leaps to life, immediately sending out waves of welcome heat.

An existing woodburning fireplace can be easily converted with a convenient, clean-burning natural gas insert.

The new generation of electric fireplaces deserves radiant reviews with authentic-looking flame and logs and nicely constructed cabinet styles. An electric fireplace is an attractive heat source that becomes a warm and handsome focal point in a chilly guest room or basement

home office. Its charm is also portable; an electric fireplace can be moved anywhere within the home, wherever and whenever it is wanted. Just plug it into a regular electrical outlet and flip the switch. If you just want the romance of the fire, you can turn off the heater and bask in the glow.

An outdoor fireplace, fuelled by natural gas or propane, takes the chill off the evening. Ceramic logs can be piled in a stone fireplace or within a circle of paving blocks on a wood deck or patio. Your hearth will be the highlight of your outdoor room, naturally drawing family and friends together around the fire.

Kingsman and other manufacturers have designed an attractive collection of mantels, modern surrounds, cabinets, shelves and wall units to frame indoor fireplaces. Pick your fireplace, pick your surround and let Mario take care of the rest.

In the Fireplaces by Mario showroom, there are many working models on display. If you are thinking about getting a fireplace, Mario will go to your home, evaluate the space and recommend appropriate solutions.

There is no charge for estimates on installations. When installation day for your new fireplace arrives, Mario, who has installed many fireplaces, is on the job with his professional installers. Put the advantage of 24 years of experience to work for you.

BARRETTE’S SMALL ENGINES INC.

Revving Up and Repairing Your Outdoor Engines

After a banner year for snow blower sales, Barrette’s Small Engines Inc. is ready for the lawn mowing and gardening season with powerful outdoor machines that can tackle any job.

It seems only fitting that a business dedicated to products powered by small engines got its start in a garage in the Barrette family’s backyard. When the recession in the early 1980s eliminated Norbert Barrette’s job in an auto plant, he retrained in small engine repair and became a Master Service Technician. His son, Justin, grew up tinkering alongside him, certain that he wanted to follow in dad’s footsteps. Justin studied business marketing in college so he could help grow Barrette’s Small Engines. His mother, Wen dy, is the administrator of the family business.

The Barrettes established an equipment sales and repair shop at 985 County Rd. 27, Belle River. In addition to repairing and maintaining customers’ outdoor machines, Barrette’s Small Engines sells a full line of lawn and garden equipment, including chainsaws, push, riding and zero radius turn mowers, tractors, trimmers, chippers, garden tillers, pressure washers, snow blowers, home standby generator systems, water pumps and more. The Belle River shop is also a full Husqvarna dealership.

In May, 2014, Barrettes Small Engines opened its second location at 2400 Highway 3 and the corner of Walker Rd. in Oldcastle. In addition to Husqvarna and other lines, the shop stocks Honda products. “Homebuilders and landscapers prefer Honda equipment. They know it won’t quit on the jobsite and they appreciate Honda’s productivity,” Justin says. “Though it is a premium product, it’s a smart investment. Buy right, buy once.”

Honda’s pumps and portable generators are being snapped up by home and business owners who want to be prepared for emergencies. Justin is intrigued by the number of fathers who are giving their 30-year-old, dependable Honda generators to their adult children buying their first homes. “Then the dads buy themselves new Honda machines. Who would have thought a generator would become a family heirloom?” Justin chuckles.

“We’ve also seen a drastic increase in sales of zero radius turn riding mowers,” says Justin. Husqvarna has released its new models, enhanced with new chassis and frame design resulting in a wide cutting deck and a compact size. The transmission is faster, delivering higher cutting speed. “You can turn on a dime, zip close around the trees and quickly get back to relaxing in the shade,” Justin promises. Husqvarna is offering savings of up to $400 in instant rebates.

A really handy gardening gadget is Husqvarna’s rear tine tiller, a workhorse that ploughs the beds. “Its new electric starter simplifies the task for people who have difficulty pulling a power cord,” Justin notes.

Keeping customers informed, Barrette’s Small Engines updates its website, small engines.ca, weekly, listing parts, tires and the shop’s big inventory of products by Briggs and Stratton, Honda, Husqvarna, Kawasaki, Kohler, Subaru, Tecumseh engines and other brand names.

Machine repairs, maintenance and tune-ups continue to be a big part of Barrette’s Small Engines’ business. In addition to individual customers, “we’ve built great relationships with 34 local box stores. They send their warrantied products to us. Manufacturers are also designating us as their repair depots,” Justin says. “We appreciate the confidence our customers have in our ability to keep their motors in motion.”

THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOME

IT’S MAY 2014 AND I'M AT A TABLE for one in the Old-World dining room of an exclusive boutique hotel in the Istrian countryside. A tall, tapering white candle burns atop it. Happy twenty-third birthday to me. I spear a forkful of the delicate frittata with shaved black truffles, wash it down with the 2012 Ravalico Chardonnay that accompanies this phase of my nine-course wine pairing dinner.

Fast forw ard a couple of weeks. I'm gazing down from Delphi at the million-tree, sacred olive grove of Apollo. From the lofty height of Mount Parnassus, its canopy looks like water, its ripples catching the sun in a warm wind that whispers rumours of pythons, prophecy and magic.

Forward another month. I'm flying on horseback across a windswept, ruin-peppered plateau in Peru. The bone-coloured serrations of th e Andes crown the horizon on all sides. The parched air burns the skin of my face, leaving it red and chapped. To my left, two sheep and an alpaca charge along beside us. The landscape looks like something out of Lord of the Rings. I have absolutely no idea where I am, and I don't care. I never want to know where I am again...

"Teacher! Miss Alex!" The soprano voice of six-year-old Sophia

(at least, that is her English name) cleaves my reverie. With a dizzying jolt that feels like a punch in the gut, I snap back to the classroom around me. My student's dark, almond-shaped eyes are shining as she presents me with a colouring sheet of people running, jumping and dancing. Present participle verbs are written in wobbly printing under each picture. "I'm done!"

"Thank you, Sophia." I take the worksheet from her and turn to the rest of the class. "Who else is finished?" Hands shoot into the air, so I pick up a dry-erase marker and move toward the whiteboard. "Okay, let's try putting these words into sentences..." I observe my own performance as if from a distance. I've been ESL teaching in South Korea for three months. I'm still running on the fumes of the round-the-world trip I took before accepti ng this job. The post-graduation splurge was planned and saved-for for years, and lasted a blissed-out, surreal and stimulating four months, all of it alone. I remember feeling more alive than I ever have, and never wanting to go home. How quickly things change.

After work, I join my fellow Canadian teachers for dinner. Restaurant options are limited. There's Korean barbecue, shabu shabu (DIY summer rolls), noodle bowls or fried chicken. The

A NOMAD FINDS EVERYTHING SHE’S SEARCHING FOR

Clockwise from above left: Alexandra enjoys the view in Santorini; research for my round-the-world trip; pizza prosciutto e pepperoni arrostiti from Spago’s on Erie Street in Windsor; the wing of my plane heading into the sunrise on my journey home; an ancient side street of Krk Island, Croatia; Temple of Apollo in Delphi, Greence; the Island of Santoriniin Greece.

most eclectic places are Chinese (in the mood for chicken feet and beetles?) or Japanese, with the supplemental Indian restaurant thrown in. My stomach aches for the dignified simplicity of prosciutto e melone or dolmades, with a good glass of red wine. It's not my weeks in Italy or Greece, though, that I'm thinking of. Instead my fantasizing takes me somewhere unexpected: the diverse and dynamic dining scene of my hometown. Food Network recently compared it to Chicago as one of the continent's great food towns. My mind and mouth flood with memories of pasticcio at Greek din ers or spaghetti all'amatriciana on Erie Street, sushi or shawarma or Montreal smoked meat on Ouellette Avenue, the best chai latte and carrot-bran muffin at the Coffee Exchange.

Tired of pointing at pictures or menu items written in Korean and hoping for the best, we venture downtown to a foreigner bar we've heard about, the only one in the city. Playfully referred to as 'The Great White Watering Hol e', Sam Ryan's teems with experts from every corner of the western world every night of the week. The menu is in English, the waitstaff speak fluent English, the bartender is Australian and the owner Calgarian.

When we step into the wood-panelled, pub-style interior, we cross into another world. This could be any sports grill in Windsor. There are dartboards and billiards, flat-screens over the bar, booths and high-top tables instead of ones where you have to sit cross-legged on the floor. I marvel at the sea of caucasian faces, thinking, 'oh, here you all are!'. In our part of town, myself and the other three ESL teachers are the only non-Koreans I've seen. We've gotten used to unwanted attention, teenagers stopping us on the street to test out their English, or taking discreet selfies with the go al of catching us in the background.

The hum of conversation in the bar lands heavily on the ear, striking it like the opening chords of a song you've known since childhood. It takes me a second to realize why; every word I pick up carries the weight of meaning. Everyone is speaking English.

We sit down and open the menu. Immediately, I want to order

Clockwise from left: A multi-day horse trek in the Peruvian Andes; Suwon nightlife, South Korea; frittata with shaved black truffles (one course of my wine-pairing dinner in Istria); Sacred Grove of Apollo from Mount Parnassus.

everything on it. At a cursory glance I read baby back ribs and mac and cheese, poutine, steak and eggs, fish and chips, buffalo wings with a choice of blue cheese or ranch dipping sauce. They have imported drinks - Canadian beers, spirits and pop. I have no idea where they found ginger ale. I order it attached to some rye. "Canadian Club or Crown?" The waitress asks.

Ten thousand kilometres from here, this would not be the sort of menu that would particularly thrill me. I pride myself on the nomad's cliche, 'be a traveller, not a tourist'. Sam Ryan's is the kind of establishment I would normally avoid like the plague in a foreign country. I like to experience culture and food the way the locals do, not be catered to as a North American. It occurs to me that I'm regarding Philly cheesesteaks with the same novelty as I once regarded cacio e pepe. It's as though experience has lapped itself, and everything is backwards now.

Endless meals of rice and kimchi have chiselled fifteen pounds from my waistline. The combination of fat, salt and carbs in my chilli burger hits me like crack. A carnal ravaging takes hold. I won't –can't –stop for anything, not to talk or even to breathe until every crumb is gone, including the fries. They even have ketchup. I think it's from Leamington.

It's the country music that finally does it. Brad Paisley's "Southern Comfort Zone" twangs over the speakers: "I have walked the streets of Rome. I have been to foreign lands. I know what it's like to talk and have nobody understand... I know what it's like to be the only one like me, to take a good hard look around and be a minority."

The lyrics take me to a place where everything is easy, where I can understand the menu in a restaurant, and the waitress understands me, where I don't have to guess which jug is fabric softener and which is detergent, where I don't have to take a picture of my washing machine and have a Korean coworker explain how to work it, where I can buy a book. South Korea has a population of about fifty million people, and two English bookstores.

I can still smell the spice of yellowing paper in Juniper Books on Ottawa Street, the air thick with words growing older than time. I used to stop in whenever I was in Olde Walkerville, on my way to the Market Square to buy cheese or to Taloola Cafe, where my friends and I used to drink lavender hot chocolate in high school. Or to Hiram Walker, where the whisky in the ▼

drink in front of me was made. The yeast made the whole town smell like freshlybaked bread.

I remember carrying blankets and Pringles down to the River in June for the fireworks. The other ESL teachers and I recently went to the International Fireworks Festival in Seoul. It was spectacular (perhaps more so than Windsor's annual fireworks), but in a city of over ten million (over twenty-five million in t he greater metropolitan area), the crowds were a nightmare. We couldn't get close enough to see much of anything, and there was a delay on the faint thunder of the explosions.

My high school friends and I always made a date for Art in the Park at Willistead, to spend the day looking at paintings by local artists and sampling fudge and Kettle Corn. The rest of the summer would be dedicated to day trips to Point Pelee or Colasanti's, where we would inevitably be mauled by goats and then console ourselves with hot cinnamon doughnuts and peach juice.

As we got older, we started touring the county wineries. We took the ferry over to Boblo, sat on the docks and marvelled at how green the grass looked back on our side of the River. Then there would be the Shores of Erie Wine Fest in the fall, BeaverTails and carriage rides at Winter Fest...

"I know," Krystina, one of the other Canadian teachers, doesn't have to ask what's wrong when a far-away sentimentality hijacks my features. All four of us are Ontarians. She's from Brampton. Her boyfriend, Ian, is a Windsorite. We met in Suwon, South Korea.

"It feels like..."

"Home," she finishes the thought for me.

The bone-deep, overwhelming exhaustion arises from nowhere. There's a point in every path where, without conscious thought, your pace wanes to a halt. A voice in your heart tells you you've come far enough, you've finished what you set out to do, you're tired, and you can go home.

The next time I land at Detroit Metro and cross the Ambassador back onto Our Side, I'll be there to stay and I can’t wait. It's time to put down roots, find a job in the same town as my loved ones and really, really good pizza (it's better than Italy's, by the way).

Somewhere in the present dimness, Brad is still playing for me. He's commiserating that he's been away way too long; "I have since become a drifter, and I just can't wait to pack, 'cause I know the route I leave on, it will always bring me back."

capturing your Best smile

DENTURE SPECIALIST BARRY PARISIEN understands how important your smile is. He applies his expertise in all aspects of the fabrication of prosthetic teeth.

“The materials and treatments that we have available today are far superior in comparison to even ten years ago and I employ these to the full benefit of my patients, with the careful and individual approach that is so necessary for something that is so important to quality of life,” Barry says.

Having practiced in Windsor since 2000, Barry established his own clinic, Parisien Denture Clinic, in June 2014, building on a solid reputation of excellence in quality and service.

A leader in cutting edge technologies and applications in the Denturist industry, Barry has taught Denturists and dental technicians across Canada on the techniques of achieving more natural looking and functioning dentures. He has also studied under experts in the field of TMJ treatment and computerized jaw tracking.

As your Denturist, Barry understands how important it is to build trust and work with you. “I am here to inform you of your options but not to pressure you. It’s my responsibility to help you make an informed choice,” Barry stresses.

Parisien Dentu re Clinic will impress you as a professional, safe, clean and modern clinic. The clinic welcomes existing denture wearers and those facing the need to start wearing dentures.

Facing the reality of needing to wear dentures for the first time or having to have new dentures made can be an intimidating process. The Parisien Denture Clinic is dedicated to you and offers a comfortable atmosphere where yo u will feel at ease. “Becoming a denture wearer is a significant change in someone's life and I want people to feel that they are comfortably familiar with the process,” Barry notes.

This is the reason he has created a series of information videos available on his YouTube channel, Barry Parisien DD. He also answers frequently asked questions on his website: parisiendentures.com. Here are some of the most popular:

Q: What is a Denturist?

A: Denturists are specialists at fabricating both conventional and implant retained dentures. Denturists are part of your oral health care team and work with you and your dentist or oral surgeon to achieve the results you want. Denturists can help you understand the many different tooth replacement options available to you from a one tooth partial denture to more invo lved treatments with implants.

Barry has his own dental lab on site, which means that your teeth never leave his office. In addition to being the clinical practitioner Barry is also the person who personally crafts your new smile from start to finish in the lab.

Q: Do I need a referral to visit the Parisien Denture Clinic?

A: No. Barry can be consulted without a referral. Simply call their office to sch edule your free consultation.

Q: Do implants make a big difference?

A: There is absolutely no comparison when it comes to the fit of a denture with and without implants, the difference is like night and day. You go from having a denture that can always move, cause sores and makes chewing difficult to having a denture that is solid, secure and allows you to eat all the foods you love.

Parisien Denture Clinic is dedicated to finding the solution that is right for you. To learn more about Parisien Denture Clinic, located at 375 Cabana Rd. E., please visit parisiendentures.com or call 519-997-7799 for your free consultation today.

BUILDING WITH PRESENCE. BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE.

WHEN LOCAL CONTRACTORS’ PROJECT lists are healthy, that is great news for Windsor-Essex County. “Busy construction sites are indicative of how well the community is progressing,” believes Art Ussoletti, President of TCI Titan Contracting Incorporated. “Our company is pleased with the tremendous growth we have had in 2014 and our projections for this year are excellent.”

“We feel very fortunate to be part of our region’s development,” says Ussoletti. New retail and office spaces, school renovations, community housing improvements, the Downtown Mission addition and a new trampoline and go-cart park: The range of projects on Titan’s completion list represents a vigorous community with a positive outlook and demonstrates the versatility Titan has to offer

One recently completed project near and dear to Titan is the new addition on the Downtown Mission of Windsor. The space accommodates administrative offices and an elevator. “It was an emotionally rewarding project for our company as we have been community supporters of the Mission and the important work that they do,” says Ussoletti.

“After months of work, we completed the Windsor Commons project in Dec., 2014,” he says. The Titan team completely transformed the former Home Depot building and constructed a new, inviting façade. They divided the big interior into four retail spaces for Marshalls, JYSK, Dollar Tree and an additional leasable space. Elsewhere on the lot, Titan erected a new 23,000 sq. ft. store for the very first Pro Hockey Life in Windsor, which sells high end hockey equipment and supplies.

The final result is so attractive that the Windsor Commons complex has been featured in several trade magazines for its innovation and design.

“Over the past three years, we have worked with Titan Contracting for our general contractor. They have done plazas in Stratford, Lakeshore and Windsor for us, comprising of retail and office. The plazas have ranged in size from 600 sq. ft. to 100,000 sq. ft. We continue to use Titan exclusively now due to the fact they deliver on time and on budget and communicate daily with us to ensure a first class end product. They maintain our sites in a professional and safe manner at all times and work closely with our tenants to ensure a smooth transition of turnover. We would truly recommend any developers to try Titan - they will be 100% satisfied with their results.”

Active Body Physical Therapy, located in the LaSalle Wellness Centre, tested Titan’s ability to work under pressure and deliver on time. After handing over the keys, Ussoletti was impressed to see the therapy team move into high gear. “They closed their old facility on Friday and by Saturday morning, they were up and operating in their new location. The transition was seamless.”

The finishing touches are being put on a new complex at 19 Amy Croft Dr. and Manning Rd., Tecumseh. “It will have offices on the second level, which include ROCK Development headquarters. Dollar Tree and other businesses will be on the ground floor,” Ussoletti explains. An ultra-modern structure of glass and steel, “its architecture utilizes the most current materials trending in commercial design and construction.” The complex will be open for business in April.

Titan works throughout Ontario, including in the Greater Toronto Area, where the company has garnered awards.“We as a company also appreciate being contracted for jobs in our own backyard,” says Ussoletti, who was born and raised in WindsorEssex County. He feels great pride when driving by the many buildings his team has completed, always thankful when members of the community approach him to discuss Titan’s latest project.

“Our team is terrific,” Ussoletti says. Senior Site Supervisor Andrew Aden, Site Supervisor John Lepain, Project Estimator Brian Miles and the rest of the Titan staff are loyal and dedicated to customer service and satisfaction.

“We are fortunate to work with outstanding design and architectural firms locally and in the GTA. These relationships have really broadened our reach,” Ussoletti observes. “Quality workmanship and time management get noticed by larger developers. We are glad that Titan is the first company they call.”

“Having limited construction knowledge, the Titan team guided us through the process step by step ensuring we were comfortable with the new build. They stayed on budget, met impossible timelines and erected our new building quickly. Wonderful to work with!”

Titan has been consistent in their high level of workmanship and their attention to detail. Their flexible and cooperative nature has proved to be a valuable asset to meet even our most demanding needs. I can confidently recommend Titan as a competent and trustworthy contractor who met all of our expectations.”

ONESOURCE MOVING SOLUTIONS FOR SENIORS

Premiere Providers of Senior Relocation

Packing up and relocating to another home is difficult at any stage of life. Seniors who need to leave their familiar surroundings and move into more manageable spaces or retirement residences often find it especially hard.

“People may not realize the loved one in their lives is overwhelmed, not sleeping and stressed by an impending move,” says Danielle Carriere, a Certified Relocation Transition Specialist®, bonded, insured, trained and experienced in helping seniors relocate. She operates ONESource Moving Solutions for Seniors in Windsor-Essex and Chatham-Kent.

If not handled properly and sympathetically, a relocation can leave a person feeling depressed, anxious, withdrawn and confused for months afterward. These are all symptoms of Relocation Stress Syndrome, recognized as an official diagnosis in 1992.

Adult children who want to help a senior prepare to move are often short on energy, time and availability. “They care about their parents, grandparents and loved ones and are relieved when they realize help is at hand,” Danielle finds.

ONESource can do whatever is required, starting with helping the senior s ort through the home’s mementoes and decide what to keep, give to loved ones and donate to charity. Danielle can arrange for a home appraisal, repairs and realtor; clean the property for viewing; coordinate the logistics and oversee the relocation; and then handle the unpacking of the client’s possessions.

At the conclusion of moving in day, the senior is settled into the new home,

comforted by favourite furnishings, mementoes and artwork already in place.

If the client does not want to move but is feeling closed in by a lifetime of possessions, ONESource can help pare down and organize so the client can move around safely in a clutter-free home.

“All of our services, including estate dispersals, are available to trustees, banks, lawyers, Power of Attorneys, executors,

geriatric care managers, senior living communities, physicians and health providers,” Danielle says.

Danielle provides a free, one hour, no obligation estimate so the client, loved ones and advisers can decide if ONESource is the best solution to their relocation challenges. Danielle says, “By being sensitive and respectful, we can help our clients and their families move forward.”

SHAN HASAN

People, Properties and Passion

“There are so many homebuyers out there right now and they need properties to purchase,” says Shan Hasan, Sales Representative for Royal LePage Binder Realty. “If the home is priced right, it’s moving fast.”

Recent sales indicate 2015 will be as healthy a year for Shan’s home sales as last year proved. “Out of 125 or so Royal LePage Binder agents, I ranked number 10 in 2014. It was my first year of business and I hit the ground running, earning the President’s Gold Award and becoming a multi-million dollar producer. Passion for people is my driving force. I love being a part of making my clients’ dreams a reality,” he says.

Born and raised in Windsor and fluent in English, Hindi and Urdu/Ourdou, Shan says, “Homebuyers tell me they want a Realtor who is trustw orthy and will give 100% to market their homes to as many buyers as possible.”

“Those days of just putting a For Sale sign on someone’s front lawn and walking away are gone,” Shan notes. “I would say that 90% of home searches are done online by prospective buyers.” To support their efforts, he created mobile websites. “That way, you are able to search properties on your smart phone whenever you have a moment. You could find your perfect home on your coffee break!”

As the publisher of Windsor Social Magazine and a former marketing specialist, Shan appreciates that a poor quality image or lackluster presentation can do its subject a disservice. He supervises his own professional photographers to ensure every room is appealingly portrayed. “Working with my own graphic designers, I create eye-catching presentations, online marketing, creative signage and brochures and other promotional strategies to get my clients’ properties sold fast,” Shan explains.

Select properties are also featured in Shan’s virtual tours. “I’ve created a YouTube channel that shows my videos,” he says.

Shan’s property listings are posted on facebook.com/windsorhomelisting; YouTube.com/windsorhomelisting; WindsorHomeLis ting.com; and ShanHasan.com. They can also be found on the MLS site realtor.ca, Kijiji and LinkedIn.

“When social media is used properly, it is a strong tool,” Shan finds. “It is a means of giving potential buyers as much information as possible. Such immediate access increases the property’s exposure to people who are eager to buy.” That includes out-of-towners, like Torontonians searching for WindsorEssex County homes where they can savour their vacation time and retirement.

While promotional tools garner attention, it is Shan’s personal service that puts “Sold!”

on the sign. He accompanies clients through the entire process and then remains in touch. Prior to move-in day, Shan sends in his cleaning team. “After I ensure my clients receive the keys, they are then greeted by a clean house.”

Shan works with the first time homebuyer with a strict budget to the higher buyer with very specific desires. He chuckles, “I’ve been the bachelor buying my first place and now I’m a husband with a five-year-old daughter and infant son, which also gives me insight into people’s evolving housing needs.”

The challenge of connecting people to their ideal homes energizes him. “I enjoy walking through houses with buyers. It helps me understand what they are looking for, such as a large, open kitchen for bringing family and friends together,” Shan says. “I realize that a home is one of the most important purchases they will make in their lifetime and I appreciate their trust.”

WINDSOR AQUATIC CENTRE Bringing in Olympians

“IF YOU BUILD IT, THEY WILL COME.”This famous line from the movie, Field of Dreams, referring to the game of baseball, could also be said about Windsor’s International Aquatic and Training Centre. With the WIATC’s 10 lane, 50 metre competition pool and awesome diving towers, it is no wonder that Windsor has already enjoyed high level competitions such as the World Fina Diving Championships, Provincial Synchro

swimming, as well as numerous swimming competitions including the International Childrens’ Games and Eastern Canadian Nationals to name a few. What one might not know is that this world class Aquatic Centre has also attracted world class coaching. The Windsor Aquatic Club, one of two competitive swim teams which train at the centre, has 3 former Olympians on their coaching staff.

Windsor native Mike McWha was a member of the 2000 Olympic team. He is head coach of the National level swimmers. His success in swimming began back when he was 12 years old and made a Provincial team. What followed was a long list of accomplishments including 7 times National champion, National record holder, captain of the University of Michigan swim team, as well as belonging to numerous National teams travelling all over the world. Last year, McWha was inducted into the Windsor Sports Hall of Fame. His memorabilia and achievements are on display at the Aquatic Centre where he coaches 6 days a week.

For Mike, coming back to Windsor has been very gratifying. As a kid, he swam for the team he now coaches. Back in his day, there were no 50 metre pools around so the team traveled every week to the States in order to train in better facilities. The club had raised money in hopes of building a new pool but the politics of the day dictated otherwise. That didn’t stop his team from great success. One of his most favourite memories is winning silver in the 4 X 200 freestyle relay at Senior Nationals with his teammates. Back then, the Windsor Aquatic Club was a very competitive and highly regarded swim club known at all levels of competition. Mike’s plan is to get WAC back to its former glory days.

“My goal is to create a team that is relevant on the National scene. I feel like the club is reflective of the city itself… back when I was a kid, we had numerous great swimmers. The climate changed and swimming became less popular in this city. Pools closed and the interest was somewhat lost. Now with the addition of the new facility and our coaching staff, the potential is there for greatness.”

The second Olympian is Danielle Campo. Danielle is a Para Olympian who won 3 gold, and 1 silver medal at the 2000 Summer Para Olympics and set world records in the 50, 100, and 400 free. Danielle also competed in the 2004 Para Olympics winning 2 bronze and a silver. Danielle has also returned to WAC where she once swam and also coached. She is

head of the Para swimmers. She hopes to share her experiences and knowledge to create a thriving Para program here. Her first order of business is to get the program better known in the community. She remembers when she was 6 yrs old and swam in a summer league. She was approached about swimming Para. Neither she nor her family had ever heard of it up until then. Danielle wants to help families and provide opportunities the way she was helped. As for her feelings about coaching at WAC again, she says, “Having this pool and seeing WAC thrive is just incredible. This was my family and we are all back together. It feels great; like we all came home.”

Deb Grant rounds off the Olympic trio. She started swimming competitively at age 10 and by 12 years old, had qualified for Senior Nationals. In 1980, she made the Olympic team. Unfortunately, that was the year the Olympics were boycotted. For someone to achieve such an ultimate goal and then have it taken away must have been very devastating. The hard lessons learned from that experience help Deb teach her swimmers about overcoming obstacles and hardships and focusing on their own goals. Last Olympic trials, Grant and her teammates were recognized and commemorated for their accomplishments. It was a proud and bittersweet moment. A Calgary native, Grant coached in Calgary and Saskatoon before moving to Windsor. Deb first coached for WAC back in the 90s. She found it difficult coming here to Windsor seeing the poor facilities as she was used the premiere swimming pools found in both of her previous cities. “It was frustrating to come here and have to train athletes in such lousy pools. I wasn’t used to it,” says Grant. After taking a 16 year hiatus from coaching, Deb returned to WAC three years ago. “To be back coaching – doing what I love, and have this pool…it really is a dream come true.” When asked about coaching with the other two Olympians, Deb smiled and said she actually helped coach them when they were swimmers at WAC back in the 90s. “I guess you could say I’ve come full circle.”

WAC president Teresa Tennant is also feeling very proud. “To be the only team in Ontario with 3 Olympic coaches is a sense of distinguished pride,” says Tennant. “Windsor has not been seen as a swim community for a long time but now all the pieces of the puzzle are in place. This is an accomplishment for the entire community as a whole. We are a family focused, nonprofit organization that, with such strong

volunteer support, has been able to acquire and sustain the ultimate coaching staff.”

The club has already noticed big changes since hiring such talent. They have had an increase in athletes by 50% this year and are expecting the numbers to continue to grow in the future. Word spread quickly in the swim community of WAC’s top level coaching. Swimmers from as far away as Wallaceburg now call Windsor Aquatic Club their home. Fourteen year old Nicole Depooter, travels 113 km each way just to train under Mike McWha. That is not an easy task considering the grade nine student spends just over 3 hours of travel time for each practice. Right now, she trains 6 times a week, but is about to add early morning practices to her schedule. That will mean she will be getting up at 3:45am to make the 5:15 start time, swim for an hour and a half, then head back to Wallaceburg for school. After school, it’s back on the road for another practice. The dedication and commitment of such a young girl is impressive to say the least, and some might say.... crazy. But for Nicole and her family, it is worth it. The decision to switch clubs came down to training. Nicole’s mom Lisa, explains, “Nicole has high goals and trains hard but just wasn’t getting what she needed from her old club.” They decided to give WAC a try. After one practice with Mike, their decision was solidified. “Nicole knew exactly where she needed to be after just one practice. Every practice that she attends makes up for the distance we travel, the time on the road, and the family sacrifices. It is all worthwhile. When you have that level of expertise on the deck, it can’t help but improve your swimming. It’s a whole new level of respect, confidence and trust with your coaches.” As for Nicole, she loves how Mike pushes them hard and cares so much. “The drive is long but it’s worth it. I love it here.”

When McWha was asked for his thoughts on his fellow coaches, he said, “There is nothing a kid will go through that we haven’t experienced. If it’s happened in the sport, it has happened to one of us. Every spectrum is covered. We know what it takes to get to that level and our experience is pretty vast. Just the mental side of it all will be priceless for them.”

Teresa Tennant couldn’t agree more. “We have a male Olympian, a female Olympian and a Para Olympian. I have reason to believe that this trio of Olympians, alongside our other top level coaches, will ensure a long legacy of great swimmers and potential future Olympians.”

ONTARIO Plaza

DESIGN CENTRE

Hello, Windsor Life Readers!

We here at Plaza Ontario Marble & Tile Inc. have exciting news for you. During the 40-plus years we have been in business, our customers have often asked us to refer them to other talented, resourceful and dependable local companies that could complete their interior design and building projects. Happy to oblige, we took the next step six years ago and created the Plaza Ontario Design Centre at 1641 Provincial Rd, Windsor.

This 40,000 sq. ft., one-stop resource centre now provides all the design professionals and products that you need to decorate a home or build one. Instead of driving all over Essex County, you can receive personal attention at our convenient location.

Although we are independent businesses, we collaborate with one another for your benefit. If you wish, we can organize a group appointment so every professional you want is at the conference table. You’ll feel more comfortable making decisions, knowing everyone is working together on your behalf.

Professionalism, expertise and dedication are exemplary at the Plaza Ontario Design Centre. We are pleased to welcome our newest allies in whole home design solutions: Benjamin Moore – Merlo’s Paint & Wallpaper. They join our own company, Plaza Ontario Marble & Tile Inc., and Sentry Windows & Doors, Prime Lighting Design, Amazing Closets, Façade Interiors, Welcome Home Kitchen & Bath, Architect Lino Montemurri and Preferred Restoration.

You’ll find the best trends in design and materials here. At Plaza Ontario Marble & Tile Inc., the fastest growing product is LVT vinyl plank flooring that imitates ceramic and hardwood. It can be applied over concrete or your old floor, saving you effort and money. This beautiful product is ideal for basements and condos.

In high traffic areas, porcelain and ceramic tiles go the distance. They replicate slate, stone and even hardwood.

The appeal of authentic hardwood is timeless. Hand-scraped, wire-brushed and dark stains are in demand right now. Plaza Ontario Marble & Tile Inc. carries products by Bruce and other innovators in flooring.

Homeowners who love the soft, warm feel of carpeting underfoot will be pleased with the new generation of carpets. Quality, hardwearing fibres and improved warranties add to carpet’s appeal. We have a huge selection in this season’s colour palette.

Walls are given equal attention by Plaza Ontario Marble & Tile Inc. Kitchen backsp lashes become design statements when covered in a mix of small glass and stone mosaic tiles or gleaming bands of pristine subway tile. A boring wall can be the focal point when finished in earthy materials, such as cladded stone, eco-friendly cork or horizontal planks of rustic wood.

Granite, quartz and marble are the materials most homeowners specify for kitchen and bathroom countertops. We also sell tiles and full slabs of natural stone products for shower walls.

Everything we sell, our professional crew can install. Because as part of the Plaza Ontario Design Centre, we are committed to making your home simply beautiful.

1641 PROVINCIAL ROAD, WINDSOR ON

Carrying the Benjamin Moore paint line plus every paint tool imaginable, a wide collection of window coverings and Windsor-Essex County’s largest selection of wallcovering books, the Merlos cater to do-it-yourselfers, interior desi gners and contractors. Customers can benefit from the Merlo siblings’ combined 100 years of industry experience. Every staff member, including sister Linda Mitchell, is a Certified Wallcovering Specialist and Certified Paint Coating Consultant. Accommodating painters’ schedules, the store is open from 7:30 am to 6 pm, Mon. to Thurs.; 7:30 am to 7 pm, Fri.; and 8:30 am to 4 pm, Sat.

Benjamin Moore – Merlo’s Paint & Wallpaper features a design consultation room, equipped with comfortable chairs and a table, where designers can meet clients and discuss decorating ideas. “Design professionals can call to reserve our room for free,” Karen invites.

She finds, “Designers prefer to use Benjamin Moore, the leader in setting new colour trends.” Professional painters appreciate the brand’s quality, endurance and smooth application. Phil observes, “Benjamin Moore invests hugely in research and development so their products surpass their competitors, yet are comparatively priced. Ultra Spec, Benjamin Moore’s line for contractors, is as good as other manufacturers’ top lines.”

Every customer, pro or rookie, who has painted with Benjamin Moore’s Aura interior and exterior paint is impressed by the results. Aura utilizes patented Gennex colorant and Color Lock technology to deliver fast drying, self-priming, extreme hiding and low odour paint finishes in any colour. Benjamin Moore’s Color Lock technology provides the most washable finish in any colour you like.

“Aura interior paint is offered in matte, eggshell, satin and semi-gloss finishes to ensure you are able to achieve just the look you are desiring,” Karen says. It is also available in a unique matte finish called Aura Bath & Spa, specifically designed to perform in high humidity environments.

Color Lock is a unique feature only found in Benjamin Moore’s premium quality Aura paint,” Phil says. Color Lock uses Gennex pigment particles in the paint base, which permits Aura to deliver truer, richer, more vibrant colours that resist fingerprints and scuffs, with no clear rub off when washed. Color Lock also resists stains and colour fade. “Look for the Color Lock medallion on the paint can.”

“Aura is not like any other paint. See for yourself,” Karen says. “For knowledgeable, truly helpful assistance, depend on our staff to help you select the right colour, sheen and volume for your projects. Because you deserve the best!”

“Remember,” Phil says, “the bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of a low price is gone.”

Creating Ambiance with the Perfect Lighting

CHOOSING A LAMP OR LIGHT FIXTURE involves more than appreciation of its esthetic appeal. “We introduce our customers to the concept of layering their lighting so they can paint a room with light,” says Michael Primeau, owner of Prime Lighting Design Inc. and Prime Electrical Services.

Also a registered Ontario Master Electrician, Michael leads his team of Lighting Specialists at Prime Lighting Design, located for the past 5 years in the Plaza Ontario Design Centre at 1641 Provincial Rd., Windsor. “It is energizing to be with likeminded businesses devoted to residential, commercial and industrial design,” Michael remarks.

Manager Jennifer Jacques says, “When customers come to see what we have in our showroom, we ask them what they want their lighting to do. Different types of lighting are intended to perform specific tasks, so it is important to determine what is most appropriate.”

In the kitchen, a judicious application of under-cabinet lighting, recessed lighting in the ceiling and pendant lights suspended over the island will increase functionality while generating a pleasing ambiance. Prime Lighting Design’s specialists can calculate the proper amount of lighting required in the family room to make it feel comfortable and intimate. “Many people have insufficient light in the bathroom; it’s a high task environment and lots of light is needed in the right places,” Jennifer notes.

“We also educate people about the different colour temperatures of light cast by incandescent, fluorescent and LED bulbs,” Michael says. In its showroom, Prime Lighting Design has a display equipped with numerous types of lighting. Customers bring in their paint, tile, flooring, upholstery and other samples and hold them under the lights.

“People are very surprised by the effect that lighting has on their décor samples. It can appear warm or cool, with a white, yellow or blue cast that alters the colours substantially. Your lighting choices should enhance, not detract,” says Jennifer.

“It is our job t o ensure that everyone who comes to our store knows more about lighting so they can make confident decisions,” Michael says. Prime Lighting Design also offers in-home consultations in Windsor, Chatham, Sarnia and communities in between. “The wrong lighting selections can diminish the most beautifully decorated home. We can help you get it right the first time.”

Prime Lighting Design also provides its ex pertise to business owners requiring lighting for their offices, conference rooms, restaurants and hotels. After creating a lighting layout that achieves the correct balance, Prime Electrical Services can then install the fixtures.

With infinite options, Michael points out, “You are really buying a piece of art with lightbulbs. Make your lighting selection as individual as you are.”

Prime Lighting Desig n has inspiring displays in the showroom and online at primelightingdesign.com. Customers also appreciate being able to custom order products.

“Our customers enjoy the confidence in knowing we’ll help them choose the right pieces for their space,” Jen says. “Light fixtures are like jewellery for your home – a great fixture can be as timeless as diamond earrings.”

Locking Up For The Last Time Windsor Says Goodbye To Its Old JailWith Public Tours

IF THE WALLS OF THE FORMER WINDSOR JAIL in Olde Sandwich could talk, they would whisper a lot of stories.

From the execution by hanging of Peter Beyak on December 6, 1933 to the transporting of inmates to the new multimillion dollar South West Detention Centre.

In November, for the first and only time in the history of the 89-year-old jail, the general public was granted a glimpse of life behind cement walls, and into one of overcrowding, smuggled contraband and even medieval looking devices designed to hold dead bodies for display.

With the locks removed, visitors roamed the facility, asked questions and even entered the small cells that, while made for two, sometimes had as many as four inmates crowded into a tiny space.

“This allows us an opportunity to demonstrate the life of guards and inmates in a 1920's facility,” said former superintendent Mike Wasylk.

For three days, people came into the jail, peered into the cells and read graffiti that former inmates left behind as a reminder that they were there.

“We are quite surprised with the response. We sold out,” said Wasylk of those who purchased $10 tickets to tour the jail.

While a Johnny Cash tribute band played one of his hits, 'Folsom Prison', school children to seniors toured the jail that was built in 1925 and officially closed on August 25 and turned over to Infrastructure Ontario.

“The building outlived it's lifespan,” noted Wasylk who was in charge of the facility from 2003 to 2006.

An imposing site, nestled behind the former county court

house which became McKenzie Hall, the Windsor Jail is a three-story, 25,000 square foot facility, set on half an acre with 20-foot high cement walls and surrounded by razor wire.

“I thought it would be cool to see the jail,” said Dane Hostrawser, a Grade 5 student at St. John Vianney.

His teacher, Rose Napoli said that the students were brought to the old jail because it is a part of the local heritage and it ties into what they were learning in class – historical fiction.

There was nothing fictitious about the trap door on the third floor where hangings took place, the last one on August 24, 1943. (Actually, there were two that day as Bruno Kisielewski, 21, and Stefan Alexander Ogrodawski, 25, were hung for the murder of Joseph Borg).

Part of the tour included the kitchen and laundry facilities. Inmates ate 3,000 calories a day, as regulated by the provincial government, during breakfast at 7:30 am, lunch at 11:30 and dinne r at 4:30 pm. Utensils in the kitchen were well guarded and accounted for several times per day.

Low offending inmates would be allowed to work in either the kitchen, where they would serve up to 600 meals per day, or the laundry.

“This would be a privilege for them. They could bring extra food back and that was a privilege,” said guard Rod Gillis who worked at the jail for 30 years.

He said that those working those tasks would be segregated from the rest of the jail population. In his three decades, he said he only saw two escapes.

Gillis noted that at one time he worked with the young offenders, mostly 16 and 17-year-olds who were segregated from the older population. Young offenders were later housed in a juvenile facility.

In all, the Windsor Jail could hold 197 inmates including up to a dozen women.

Often, the jail was overcrowded.

96 Windsor Life
Clockwise from top left: One of the ranges at the Windsor Jail that would house 10 inmates, or more; the 89-year-old jail rises like a fortress in Olde Sandwich.

“I found it difficult on weekends when we jumped up 20 or 30 percent,” said guard Renzo Anzolin who started as a guard back in 1989.

Each cell block contained five cells and a common area where inmates would eat and watch TV.

“There was a lot of jockeying because people didn't want to stay with this guy or that guy,” said Anzolin.

On arrival at the jail during the tour, there were several displays which included different types of handcuffs, various types of contraband smuggled in and weapons guards would use.

“We did our searching but we didn't have the machinery like you see on CSI. It was all internal,” said Anzolin.

When the Windsor Jail was at capacity, which it was on most days, there would be 14 or 15 guards on duty but at night just six. Length of stay varied at the jail, from those serving their sentences on weekends and those waiting to be transported to other facilities to inmates serving up to two years.

“We had one guy here for three years who was waiting trial but that was not the norm,” commented Anzolin.

There is no doubt that the new South West Detention Centre was long overdue. The new facility is able to house up to 315 male and female inmates. It is on 30 acres, is 200,000 square feet and cost $247 million.

Like all correctional facilities, the Windsor Jail was not without its problems. Besides overcrowding and the smuggling of drugs and other contraband, there were two deaths in the fall of 2012.

There were 19 recommendations made after a coroner's inquest into the death of Jonathan Drew on Sept. 21, 2012. It was determined that he died of natural causes.

A couple of weeks later, Kendra Blackbird died from what the Ontario Public Service Employees Union said were due to over-crowding and a drug overdose.

What becomes of the Windsor Jail now is unknown. It is a registered heritage property and the City of Windsor has expressed some interest and there has been some hints of turning it into a museum.

Other old stone jails in the province have alre ady seen the transformation to tourist destinations. The Goderich jail has been closed for decades and it has bee converted to a museum. The one in Coburg is now a Bed and Breakfast and the facility in Walkerton is for lease. WLM

Epoxy Coating Keeps It Clean and Green

Concrete floors are known to be tough enough to withstand the daily onslaught of family living. But concrete does have its limits. Unprotected, it is defenseless against normal but destructive use.

After years of intensive research and development, Enviro-Epoxy Products Inc. has revolutionized the concrete floor coating industry with the manufacturing of its own line of solvent free two component 100 percent solids epoxy floor coatings.

Available locally through Winroc, the Enviro-Poxy EP100 line of two component 100 percent solids epoxy coating system is an advanced, environmentally friendly coating, containing no VOC (Volatile Organic Com-pound), no solvent, no water, no harmful fumes and virtually no odour. Enviro-Poxy (EP100) has been formulated to provide superior functional and decorative properties, high chemical resistance, high mechanical strength and excellent durability and adhesion. These protect the substrate from wear, chemical attack, stains, mechanical stress and bacteria formation.

Enviro-Poxy EP100 is an environmentally friendly and cost effective superior protection for concrete floor coating in commercial, industrial and residential applications.

Approved by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, Enviro-Poxy EP100 is recommended for use in food and food related facilities such as abattoirs, breweries, canneries, dairies, fishery plants, food processing and packing plants and more.

With over 25 years of combined experience in the floor coatings and flooring related industries, Enviro-Epoxy Products Inc. has perfected its formulation to provide an attractive, porcelain-like high gloss impervious finish with excellent resistance to industrial and

commercial traffic. The finished floor will dramatically improve the appearance of any workplace, control dust and increase lighting. This provides a bright, clean environment with easy to clean and easy to maintain floors.

The epoxy is available in four and 16 litre kits to accommodate jobs of every size. The colour selection includes grey, sandstone and clear. The do-it-yourselfer mixes the kit’s paint and epoxy together and then applies it to the clean, grease-free concrete floor. Two coats are required to achieve a tough finish. Once the epoxy coating is cured, it will have a smooth, nonporous, high gloss finish.

It eliminates extra work with the broom by keeping down the dust th at naturally forms from unprotected concrete, particularly in high traffic areas. The epoxy finish helps to keep everything else in the garage cleaner, too. When oil drips under the car or the washing machine overflows in the basement, the liquid will puddle on top of the impenetrable coating. Just take a rag and wipe it up. Attractively painted and unlined, the spotless floor will look better than ever.

Stop by Winroc’s new facility at 2975 St. Etienne Blvd., Windsor to see its fabulous paint showroom done with anti-slip enviro epoxy. Seeing is believing.

SANDPIPER ENERGY SOLUTIONS Year Round-the-Clock Home Comfort Specialists

FURNACES AND FIREPLACES keep you warm in the winter, but if there is a carbon monoxide leak, your safety and even your very life are at risk. Recognizing this, the Ontario government has legislated the mandatory installation of carbon monoxide (CO) alarms close to sleeping areas in homes heated by fireplaces and furnaces fuelled by wood, gas, propane or oil or built with attached garages or carports.

“For good measure, it’s advisable to have a CO alarm installed on every floor of your home,” says Roy Levy, Sales Manager for Sandpiper Energy Solutions, a provider of furnaces and other home comfort equipment. “Our company is educating people about the dangers of carbon monoxide, the silent killer that has claimed the lives of more than 400 Canadians in the past 10 years. With no odour, colour or taste, CO can only be safely detected by an alarm made for that purpose.”

Sandpiper Energy Solutions is so concerned for people’s safety that the company is offering a new CO alarm, completely free, when the homeowner books a no-obligation, in-home consultation to ensure the existing furnace is operating efficiently and securely. The offer is available until April 30th.

“This is also the ideal time to examine your heating bills from this past winter. We can help you determine if your heating source is wasting costly energy, a likely scenario if your furnace is over 10 years old. We can provide alternatives that are friendlier to your household budget and the environment,” Roy says. “Another important consideration is that the new generation of furnaces has safer venting, directed out the w all, so there is less opportunity for clogging, a common cause of CO poisoning.”

Offering people the option of purchasing, financing or renting a wide range of high efficiency furnaces, central air, tank and tankless water heaters, humidifiers, air filtration systems and climate control systems, Sandpiper is helping homeowners realize even more savings. “For a limited time, you can buy a new high efficiency furnace plus get air conditioning at half price. Or you can rent your new furnace and we will cut your air conditioning rental price in half,” Roy says.

“With our bundle prices starting at just $69.95 per month, you can lower your heating and cooling expenses while optimizing your comfort and peace of mind,” Roy assures. “When you upgrade both your furnace and air conditioning, the costs may even be offset by as much at $650 through the Ontario ENERGY STAR® Program rebate.”

Sandpiper’s written quotes are detailed so customers can compare

costs and advantages with competitors’ quotes. “Our contracts are straightforward, with no hidden fees, no charge for equipment installation and no unpleasant surprises,” Roy assures.

Paula Burgin, Sandpiper’s Director of Energy Services, appreciates, “Every home and situation is unique. Accordingly, we determine the most effective, efficient and affordable comfort solution for each homeowner. Our financing is convenient and competitive and our flexible plans fit virtually everyone’s budget.”

Knowing that expert installation is as important as the quality of the equipment, Sandpiper has partnered with Encore Mechanical, a reputable Windsor contractor that takes care of Sandpiper’s equipment installations and after-sales service and maintenance.

Joel Cecile of Encore Mechanical, a family company founded in 1982, has found Sandpiper’s transparent rental program of great benefit to his customers. “Sandpiper’s staff is prompt and courteous and provides excellent service to our customers,” Joel says.

Should an emergency occur, Sandpiper’s own in-house c ustomer service department, here in Ontario, is ready to assist. “Our local agents and service engineers are on standby to help around-theclock,” Paula promises. “No matter what time you call us, every agent who answers the phone has the ability to immediately dispatch a technician. They can really help when you’re faced with an unexpected equipment breakdown.”

Happy customers are spreading the word about Sandpiper. Although the company has been in operation for many years, it only made its services available in Windsor-Essex County last year. “We have been very well received. 2014 was a banner year for us here,” Roy says. In addition to supplying home comfort equipment and service to individual and multi-property owners, Sandpiper is also the HVAC source for six different homebuilders in Windsor-Essex County.

Always mindful of people’s well-being, Sandpiper cautions homeowners against door-to-door salespeople trying to persuade them to sign questionable HVAC contracts. “Something should be done to stop other companies from this practice. It’s a safety issue for homeowners, especially vulnerable seniors,” Roy believes. “We want your initial business at your invitation and we want to earn you r repeat business by installing reliable equipment and providing outstanding after-sales service.”

Homeowners wishing to arrange a free in-home assessment and a no-obligation quote for a home comfort package can simply call Sandpiper’s toll free number, 1-888-668-8117.

HOROSCOPE

ARIES

MAR 21 - APR 20:

If you were in a book club what would you read about most? Make that your hobby. Take thirty minutes each day and do some homework. Then return to other things in a better frame of mind, able to carry on, perhaps even able to solve problems.

TAURUS

APR 21 - MAY 21:

Do not mess with the bull! The more anyone tries to push you, the more you resist. It might be swing, duck or get out of the way time. Watch your back. Trust your intuition, but work with the facts, just the facts! If someone else were in your shoes, what would you tell them to do?

GEMINI

MAY 22 - JUN 21:

It can be difficult for you to find the best way to get along with others now. Too many people around you have different points of view. If you come into contact with someone who does not agree with you, there will be conflict. Flexibility is the key to solving issues that may arise.

CANCER

JUN 22 - JUL 23:

Your patience is really being tested. If not now, when will you accomplish what you set out to do? What holds you back? What can you do about it? You have come so far and gone through so much. Give yourself credit for being a survivor. Don’t quit now. Keep your eye on the prize.

LEO

JUL 24 - AUG 23:

Extraordinary circumstances require extraordinary measures. It is not possible to fit everybody into one category. There are times when you have to think outside the box, not to be judged nor to judge. Adaptability is a saving grace.

VIRGO

AUG 24 - SEP 23:

You may be driving yourself a little bit too hard from force of habit. Give yourself a break the same as you would give someone else one if they needed it. If you don’t slow down voluntarily, you may start making little mistakes here and there which will catch up to you later on.

LIBRA

SEP 24 - OCT 23:

Your love of peace and friendship may be tested. Leave yourself an option if you don’t want to be around someone who loves to quarrel. Have a back-up plan. Your energy level may be dragged down by agreeing to do something you don’t want to do. It is ok to say no or maybe later.

SCORPIO

OCT 24 - NOV 22:

You have probably learned what to do and what not to do by now. If you haven’t, you will. A lot of hidden agendas are brought out into the open, adding a degree of uncertainty to decisions you must make. What was true in the past may not be true now. Same game. Different rules.

SAGITTARIUS

NOV 23 - DEC 21:

Don’t move so fast. You have to follow the proper steps or others will not be able to keep up with you. Children and loved ones need some reassurance from you that they are important in your life. Time you spend with them now will pay off in dividends further down the road.

CAPRICORN

DEC 22 - JAN 20:

No matter which way you turn, you run into obstacles. Hidden feelings from long ago suddenly emerge and have you questioning yourself and some choices you made. You cannot go back in time. However you move forward with wisdom and strength gained from past events.

AQUARIUS

JAN 21 - FEB 19:

Life gets busier by the day. Knowing and doing are two different acts. When you take time to slow down and be careful, you get better results. If you meet others half-way, you gain ground quickly. Say what you will do and do what you say you will.

PISCES

FEB 20 - MAR 20

You have many choices to make along with unusual, unexpected, expenses. You are confronted by the duality of life. You can build upon previous success by combining the best of both past and present. This can lead you and your associates even closer to a bright and shining future.

Josh Haddon

In The Fight Of His Life Through Wit And Humour

JOSH HADDON HAS QUITE THE STORY TO TELL. In fact, at age 29, he’s probably experienced more than most people do in a lifetime. He says that in the past 10 years, he’s already knocked off a major portion of his bucket list....something he’s grateful for, since his time could be running out.

Born in Milton, Ontario, he left home when he was only 13. For the next decade, he says, “I bounced around and visited nearly every city in Canada and eventually settled in Windsor back in 2009.” He bought a call centre and organized a telemarketing business on Ottawa street. Business boomed and offices were established across th e country – handling everything from fund-raising for political parties to selling products that included solar panels. At one time, more than 70 people were employed in the Windsor office alone.

At age 22, Josh was diagnosed as being diabetic and three years later he suffered a stroke partially brought on by stress, which prompted him to sell his company. “I loved business,” he says, “I was making good money, I liked employing people and the business was thriving even though it was during one of the toughest economic climates in recent memory. But it wasn’t exactly what I wanted to be doing”.

Once the company was out of the way, Josh began to focus on his major passions that truly bring him joy: travel, comedy and writing. He opened a club, The Comedy Quarry on Ottawa street and last November he began writing a book titled ‘The Funny Thing

About Cancer’ after discovering that he was suffering from Stage 3 esophageal cancer, or as he puts it, with a chuckle, “it’s pretty bad...it’s not one of the good cancers, you could say.” Doctors told him that even with surgery, he only had a 3% to 5% chance of making it to the year 2018. Always the philosopher, he adds, “since I take serious issues that happen in the world and make them funny on stage, it would be hypocritical of me not to find the brighter side of my own cancer, so I decided on the book which I hope to distribute, free of charge to every cancer clinic and chemo-therapy and radiation centre in North America so that cancer fighters and their families have something entertaining and uplifting to read while they’re being treated. T he clinics are depressing and patients are always waiting...waiting for test results and treatments while sitting there reading 4-monthold Cosmopolitans.” He does say that most cancer patients are exhausting to talk to because they’re so down... “and if you are on your way out, why do you want to spend the last remaining months of your life with that sort of attitude.”

With tongue firmly in cheek, Josh says most of his research was done at the Chapters’ cancer section where he spent more than 3 hours sifting through material that’s been published on the disease – most of which consists of “either cook books or really sappy, dramatic stories. Mine is geared more toward the layman...the everyday cancer-haver and it’s pretty hilarious. I think it’ll do very well.”

And how does Josh Haddon manage to smile and wisecrack

Your Place Or Mine? • 2015 105

through a catastrophic illness? As he puts it, “I didn’t have a great childhood, battled a bit of depression in my early teens, left home very early and at the age of 15 had a life-altering experience, but you’ll have to read the book to find out what happened. Ever since then, I’ve done exactly what I wanted”.

Despite his illness, Josh makes the best of every day. He’s comfortable in his own skin; “there’s no point in moping about things –you’re in charge of your own destiny inasmuch as it is a struggle and the world does throw you curve balls. Eventually you’re going to hit one and I think that’s what I’ve done.” He’s a fighter – that is for sure. He lost 100 pounds and got rid of his diabetes. He has no lingering effects from the stroke and he says his cancer “is just another challenge that I’m going to overcome which hopefully will become another part of my long life. If not, I’m going to do my best to help others on my way out!” He emphasizes that cancer cannot be defeated without a positive mental attitude...an attribute he has in spades.

With the help of his counterparts in the comedy industry in both Ontario and Michigan, Josh has managed to collect about $15000 toward financing his book, which should be ready for printing by the middle of next month. Expect ‘The Funny Thing About Cancer’ to be on store shelves by the end of May. While final details remain to be worked out, Biblioasis and Juniper Books in Windsor will likely be among the places locally to carry the publication. While Josh doesn’t want to reap a large profit from sales, he’ll be taking a small amount of the proceeds to cover his expenses and to do some travelling and research for a second book. In the meantime, his main objective is to get the book published and into the hands of the people who would benefit the most from it –those suffering from the physical and mental effects of cancer.

By the time you read this story, Josh should already have had his surgery, which was scheduled for March 19th at Princess Margaret Ho spital in Toronto. He’ll be there for at least three to four weeks recuperating before he returns home to Windsor. While he won’t be mobile, he will be using his laptop to conduct business. Anyone wanting to help with the book financing, or to send along their best wishes can Email him at josh@thefunnythingaboutcancer.com .

Windsor Life Magazine congratulates Josh Haddon for his efforts in help to ease the pain of cancer sufferers and wishes the best in the future.

MADE TO SHADE WINDOW COVERINGS

Convenient In-home Service for Custom Style and Fit

With the right window treatments, it doesn’t matter whether your view is of the neighbour’s underwhelming backyard or the glorious sunset reflected on the lake. What is most important is the quality and amount of light, privacy and style that your window dressings bring to your home. Made to Shade Window Coverings is the expert to call for every situation, from one small bathroom window to a wall of soaring Palladian windows.

Celebrating 10 years in business this May, Made to Shade is proudly Canadian, designing, manufacturing and installing its own custom blinds, shades and drapes. “Our original customers have learned that our lifetime warranty is exactly that. If a cord snaps or a mechanism isn’t working, we make it right,” says owner Michael Campoli.

At the invitation of the customer, Made to Shade’s consultant arrives at the home with exciting samples, ideas and advice regarding possible solutions for any window in the home. “Our free, no obligation house call enables you to see colours and finishes in your home’s actual lighting, rather than in some showroom,” Michael explains. “Our consultant i s focused on your needs and not distracted by other customers looking for service. By not maintaining a storefront, we keep our overhead down. After we take accurate measurements of your windows, we custom-make everything in our factory at the same price or less than our competitor’s readymade blinds that are just trimmed to fit.”

The different window treatment options are extensive, stunning and on trend, including wood, venetian and vertical blinds, sun

shades, sun screens, Roman shades, drapes, curtains and valances, plus handsome choices in hardware.

Made to Shade has just released its latest solution, the new Vision blind. “This is really innovative,” Michael says. The Vision blind is so attractive that it can easily stand on its own as a design statement, without drapes or valances to finish it off. Vision is formed of two layers of translucent and opaque horizontally striped fabric in one single colour. The two fabric layers move independently of each other. “By adjusting the single chain control, you can make the opaque and translucent stripes glide past each other, softening and filtering daylight to your preference.”

If complete privacy is desired, the two striped layers can be lined u p to form a decorative fabric panel adorning the window. Vision is custom-made in sheer metallics, quiet neutrals and natural wood weave effects.

“The chain also lets you raise and lower the Vision blind. When you want a total view of the outdoors, the blind rolls neatly into its attractive cassette headrail,” Michael says.

In addition to great looks, all Made to Shade window treatments are designed for practicality and endurance. Concealed mechanisms won’t collect dust. Lubricated rollers operate smoothly. Durable polyester cords, solidly constructed tilt wands and rust proof plastic components support hassle free enjoyment, guaranteed for a lifetime.

“Once you have placed your order with our consultant, expect us to return in two weeks or less with your beautiful window treatments. Our installers install them for you, ensuring they fit and hang perfectly,” Michael assures. “You are going to love the convenience, attention to detail and savings you’ll enjoy with Made to Shade’s custom service and products!”

KITCHEN RESCUE & BATH CENTRE

Superb Home Makeovers at Half the Cost

The kitchen or bathroom of your dreams is right under your own roof, hidden by worn, unsightly cabinet doors, scratched countertops, a dinged sink and dripping faucet. Ready to save the day –and your money – is Kitchen Rescue & Bath Centre.

As more than 3,000 smart local homeowners can attest, 40 to 60% of the cost of a totally new k itchen can be saved. “If you are happy with the layout of your existing cabinetry, we can reuse the cabinet boxes. By refacing them with laminate, we can make the boxes appear like new,” says Jeff Rocheleau, who co-owns Kitchen Rescue with Mike Brisson. “Then we install new polymer or 5-piece polyester doors that outperform wood and are warrantied for 5 and 10 years.”

Coveted features can be incorporated into the layout, like a new island, pantry, deep drawers, built-in wine storage, recycling pullouts and more. Kitchen Rescue can also install a new backsplash plus LED lighting inside and under the upper cabinetry.

One way to instantly rejuvenate a kitchen or bathroom is to have Kitchen Rescue tear out a chipped, warped countertop and replace it with a new laminate, granite or quartz countertop.

To stretch the makeover budget, homeowners can choose from new high definition laminates that are extremely resistant to water damage. Jeff finds, “Some laminates resemble granite to such a degree, you have to take a closer look.”

A new countertop deserves a new sink. Kitchen Rescue can install new laminate countertops with under-mount sinks made of stainless steel or composite that looks like black granite but is just half the price of real stone.

When only the real thing will do, Kitchen Rescue works with a local granite manufacturer who supplies a granite countertop that is guarded by a solvent-based sealer. “Unlike the more common water-based sealers that need to be reapplied every 6 to 12 months or so, a solvent-based sealer does the job for 7 to 10 years,” assures Jeff.

When it is the bathroom bei ng redone, Kitchen Rescue can remove the tub and put a spacious, walk-in glass enclosed shower. The old vanity is renewed with refacing, doors, counter, sinks, faucets and hardware. “Our own plumbers take care of all the plumbing work,” says Jeff.

Tired cabinetry is usually accompanied by dilapidated flooring, which Kitchen Rescue’s installers can replace with new tile, laminate or Allure vinyl flooring.

“Homeowners who are dissatisfied by the appearance or functionality of their current

kitchen or bathroom get excited when they come to our showroom at 3021 Walker Rd., Windsor and see our 25 cabinetry displays and many options,” says Jeff.

Cynthia and Patty provide great customer service in the showroom. They invite customers to take samples to test at home.

Helping homeowners fall in love with their property all over again, Jeff then sits down with them at their kitchen table and writes down their wish list. After getting measurements onsite, Jeff offers his best recommendations and an estimate for the work.

Typical lead time for a new kitchen installation is 4 to 6 weeks. Kitchen Rescue’s very experienced installers deliver the materials and get to work. “We put down drop cloths, remove debri s and clean so when we are finished several days later, you step into a spotless room,” Jeff promises. “We guarantee our workmanship so you can enjoy your new spaces, worry-free.”

SYLES MECHANICAL

WHEN IT COMES TO RELIABILITY, home owners know to turn to Syles Mechanical for all of the operational functions of their home.

Since 1968, Syles Mechanical, under ownership of Sylvio Lesperance, and Grant Higginbottom, has been providing Windsor-Essex County with the expertise for the sound operation of these all-important home necessities that we take for granted, until something goes wrong.

“It’s understandable that these systems go un-noticed because really that’s how you want them to be when they are running efficiently,” say Grant Higginbottom. “The reality is that you need a sound reliable product and the specialists to maintain it. That’s where we come in.”

Syles Mechanical prides itself on staying abreast of innovations in the heating, cooling, electrical and plumbing industries they service because builders and home owners alike put their trust in professionals to assess the type of new products for sound, reliable performance. “We only offer what we would want for ourselves and we have the confidence to back what we install,” says Grant, noting some of the most dramatic advances to come to the homeowners’ market are tankless water heaters and indoor air quality (IAQ ) systems.

Tankless water heating is an exciting innovation that is in big demand because of its efficiency and capability in supplying an instant, endless supply of hot water, traditionally powered with natural gas or propane, or electricity. Syles proudly carries the most advanced Rinnai brand Condensing Tankless Water Heaters which produce 97% thermal efficiency

and the capacity to supply continuous hot water simultaneously to multiple plumbing demands. Yes, that means people showering in both bathrooms while a load of laundry is being washed.

Rinnai tankless condensing units are ideal for residential and commercial hot water supply and can be banked for even greater capacity. The significant difference over tank style water heaters is the energy savings since you are no longer constantly keeping water hot in a holding tank until you need it, a huge savings on your energy bills. And, no holding tank means you save valuable space. These tankless condensing units have a lifespan twice as long as a conventional water heater because they don’t significantly rust or corrode and that long-lasting design also means reduced risk of flooding. They can be rented through Syl es for as low as $34 per month.

Today’s homes are energy efficient and seal in air, which leads to poor air circulation and a buildup of air contaminants and irritant microscopic particles, including mold issues. The advancements in indoor air quality technology have benefitted many people with health problems such as allergies and respiratory conditions that are aggravated by indoor air contaminants. Syles Mechanical offers the vänEE brand, for the finest in air quality solutions that also increase energy efficiency. With their technical knowledge and expertise on all types and makes of HVAC systems, Syles can assess your needs and help you choose the best air exchange system for your home, whether it is a Heat Recovery Ventilator (HRV) system or an Energy Recovery Ventilator system. There are vänE Es IAQ systems designed for compact spaces in renovated or new construction.

Syles Mechanical is the qualified dealer and installer that you can rely on for the most comprehensive product and installation service as well as the support you need when your existing system is no longer efficient. There’s never been a better time to upgrade to the most convenient, efficient and reliable home and commercial utilities systems on the market. Right now, you can get a $200 Gift Card plus three months free rent with a new hot water tank. Or, you can get a $300 Gift Card plus three months free rent with a new Rinnai Tankless hot water heater.

Before the stork flaps into Essex and Kent County homes, expectant parents and grandparents are making the short journey to Precious Cargo & Mom 2 in Chatham. “Windsor people come here especially for our solid wood nursery furniture,” finds owner Sandra Stepniak. “With our value priced to high end cribs, change tables, armoires and much more, we have everything required to outfit a new baby, mother and the nursery.”

Precious Cargo & Mom 2 specializes in Natart, College Woodwork Kidz Decoeur and other collections of Canadian made furnishings for babies and toddlers, worthy of becoming family heirlooms. The store also carries international well-made fur nishings. “We have quality furniture in a wide range of colours, priced to fit every family’s budget,” Sandra says.

Much sought after is conversion furniture. Intelligent design converts the crib into a toddler or daybed and later, a double bed. Rather than buying a single purpose change table, savvy parents are choosing a dresser featuring a detachable frame that securely holds a thick washable change pad. Additional storage can be organized in coordinating armoires, chiffonniers and nightstands.

“Parents appreciate the style range available,” Sandra notes. They can continue their home’s décor statement in the baby’s room with traditional, contemporary, country and Euro looks.

Custom Mixing PPG Paint for Your Home’s Enduring Beauty

It is very satisfying to see how a fresh coat of paint completely transforms the home, indoors and out. “For making the greatest impact at the least cost and effort, applying superior quality paint onto your walls is your best value,” says Al Brady of Winroc, a building supplier in Windsor. “You are immediately rewarded with a clean, rejuv enated finish that updates the décor and changes the home’s personality to be in synch with your own.”

“Since most people hate painting, they want products that will give them a professional finish with minimal mess and hassle,” Al finds. He and his team at Winroc offer do-it-yourselfers and pro painters an outstanding paint selection in unlimited colours.

“PPG’s Manor Hall is the easiest paint to use, ever,” Al believes. “It is a primer, paint and stain repellent in one intelligent acrylic formula. The paint goes on smoothly, with virtually no spatter. No mess, no fuss – even people who have never painted a room before can be proud of the beautiful results they achieve.”

For indoors, Manor Hall is now manufactured with increased titanium dioxide levels to provide exceptional hiding and coverage on t he walls and ceilings. The durable finish is also washable.

In exterior applications, Manor Hall’s ManorShield urethane technology forms a tough, flexible coating suitable to cover aluminum, ferrous metal, stucco, brick, fiber cement, vinyl, concrete, masonry and wood. It is engineered to help prevent the paint from cracking, peeling or flaking.

As one of the world’s leading paint manufacturers, PPG makes finishes for the home’s every surface. (It even ranks as the number one commercial supplier of coatings for appliances). Winroc expertly mixes PPG interior and exterior paints, stains, specialty finishes and primers to give customers the perfect shades.

“With PPG, I invite you to think outside the can,” Al says. Homeowners who want to explore the latest decorating inspirations can begin with PPG The Voice of Color®, a resource created for interior design professionals. There are more than 2,000 paint colors from which to choose. The 2015 colour trends can be checked out in person at Winroc at 2975 St. Etienne Blvd. or online at ppgvoiceofcolor.com.

Four new PPG Possibilities palettes reveal the exciting direction that colour trends are taking. The Co-Leidoscope palette introduces PPG’s 2015 colour of the year, Blue Paisley, which is refreshingly coordinated with Mother of Pearl, Bone White, Curry Sauce and Stonehenge Greige. “It builds on the popularity of grey as a wall colour and enlivens it with bold blue,” Al says.

Other PPG paint collections are inspired by design greats, including architect Frank Lloyd Wright and his masterpiece, Fallingwater. International designer Vicente Wolf drew from his world travels to create his Color Diaries home collection for PPG.

Homeowners can try on new colours before picking up a roller with PPG’s Paint Color Visualizer at ppgpittsburghpaints.com. “Just upload a photo of your room or house exterior and digitally paint with any of our 2,000-plus colours,” Al says.

Professional contractors and homeowners who rely on Winroc to supply the products they need for their construction projects know they can depend on the team’s advice. “We explain the benefits and uses of our products, including the many new and enhanced decorating and construction solutions,” Al says. “From our own experience, we are able to offer our customers tips for achieving the final outcome while saving money.”

IN HONOUR OF THE ONES WE LOVE

IN HONOUR OF THE ONES WE LOVE continues to be amazed by the supreme generosity of the people of Windsor and Essex County, who annually support cancer patients and patients battling other life threatening illnesses. The 17th annual gala held on February 7, 2015 was a tremendous success attracting more than 1,000 patrons. Thanks to the enthusiastic support of loyal supporter s and donors $275,000 was raised from this year’s gala. An event of this magnitude would not be possible without the commitment of generous sponsors, prize donors and volunteers. Without the support of major sponsors, In Honour of the Ones We Love would not be able to accomplish its goals. A special addition to the gala for 2015 was a raffle for a Fiat Lounge FWD Coupe autographed by Al Pacino donat ed by Vince, Margaret and Giuliana Moceri. An additional $30,000 was raised through ticket sales for the car that was won by Lea Thompson. A large part of the evening is the tribute paid to loved ones who have died. This year John Moceri, Holden Jacob Kisch and Olga Rea were honoured during a special candle lighting ceremony at the event.

Awards were also presented to members of the community who have supported the organization. President of Rock Developments, Rocco Tullio received the Hand in Hand Award, Alan Quesnel was named winner of the Above and Beyond Award and Anna Grandi-Pase received the Community Recognition Award.

Funds raised from the gala will help expand the Kids Beating Cancer program (Honorable Little Ninjas) as well as support the acquisition of specialized equipment including a GE MAC 5500 ECG Machine.

“We felt it was important to purchase the ECG machine as we are lacking one here in Windsor. This machine allows results right away letting medical staff know as soon as possible what treatment will be needed when dealing with a cardiac situation. The money for the ECG machine was raised through a table challenge at the gala,” says Imperioli.

Imperioli began holding the event to honour her infant son Michael who died from cancer as well as support others dealing with grief in the community. Since its inception, In Honour of the Ones We Love has raised more than $6 million to enhance cancer care in our region. These funds have contributed to the purchase of a Blood Lab, CT-Scan Machine, Brachytherapy Radiation Table, a SARA Lift, a Giving Tree, In Honour of the Ones We Love – Family Tree, Summer Camp for Children, a Respite & Palliative Care Home and an Oncology Procedure Room!

In Honour of the Ones WE Love remains committed to Paediatric Services at Windsor Regional Hospital to assist with the many areas for children dealing with cancer and life-threatening diseases. These include; Oncology, Day Surg ery, Medical Day Care, Outpatient Clinics and Child Life Services, a program which familiarizes children with medical procedures when hospitalized.

“We are all affected by cancer in the Windsor-Essex community whether through a family member or friend. In Honour of the Ones We Love aims to ease the hardship of people dealing with cancer. Our goal is to make this community self sufficient so patients and their families don’t have to leave Windsor-Essex to receive treatment and support,” says founder Anita Imperioli.

It is because of our community’s generous spirit that In Honour of the Ones We Love has been able to accomplish so much to improve local cancer patient care. Together we are making a difference!
