Your Place

Or Mine? HOW TO MAKE WHERE AND HOW WE LIVE EVEN BETTER

Hi, my name is Tom Tar and I am the owner of Nulook Cleaners. When asking my customers how they clean their floors, the most common list of answers I get are bleach and water, vinegar, some sort of household cleaning solution, or a flat surface cleaning device. If you are using any one or a combination of these things, ask yourself these questions: “Does it seem like it’s working? Does your tile and grout look as clean as they should?” Most of my customers usually answer “no”. The simple reason you aren’t seeing the results you desire is because most people are really not washing their floors properly. Here are some simple explanations as to why some of the most commonly used cleaning methods really aren’t working. Bleach ultimately does nothing to benefit you in your efforts towards a cleaner floor. It may help brighten the floor a bit, but breathing in the fumes released from the bleach is hazardous to your health. Some individuals use a combination of vinegar and water. While not hazardous to your health as the bleach, this solution is not a good idea either because vinegar is acid based and will open the pores of your grout. The bigger the pore, the faster your grout gets dirty. With regard to flat cleaning devices, these tools usually only clean flat surfaces, pushing the dirt into the grout lines. And while popularly advertised and easy to purchase, most household cleaning products leave a sticky residue, allowing dirt to stick to your floors even faster. So, if you’re noticing that your floor cleaning methods just are not working or you simply just don’t have the time, we can help. Nulook Cleaners can clean and restore your floors and showers to appear as if they were just installed that day. We specialize in restoring the tile and grout in the kitchen, halls, bathrooms and specifically inside showers. If you have tile, we can clean it. We also provide grout repair, mould removal, re-caulking and resealing. It is very important to seal your grout because every time it’s cleaned, the grout pores open up (just as I mentioned with the use of vinegar solutions) and they need to be closed again so dirt does not seep in.

At Nulook, we offer two types of sealers, either clear or colour. The clear is a good choice but will last only about two years until it needs to be reapplied. The colour sealer is a superprotective, longer-lasting sealer which seals the grout 100% and does not allow any dirt to penetrate in the grout line. Not only is it super-protective, but with the coloured sealer you have the aesthetic benefit of changing your grout according to the colours you prefer for your home. When choosing Nulook Cleaners, once the service on your tile and grout is complete, I will go through and show you the proper way of cleaning your floors so that they stay clean for years to come. At Nulook, we aim to provide a variety of services for our customers, so if tile and grout aren’t your concern, we also specialize in dry foam carpet and upholstery. This cleaning method dries quickly and can be used on leather and area rugs, as well as carpet and upholstery. The dry foam method cleans extremely well and does not leave a sticky residue in the fibre, helping to prevent the material from rapid resoiling. I am also an expert in leather furniture restoration and can perform full leather redying, changing your leather to any colour you want. We repair wear marks, fading, pet damage and also provide part replacement. Nulook has a service for you, so visit our website at www.thenulook.ca for more information and amazing before and after pictures. Call me, Tom Tar, for your free, no-obligation estimate. I am personally at every job and with 20 years of business, you know the job is going to be done right! See you soon!

Lifetime Financial Moves to Help Your Children If you’re a parent, you no doubt want to see your children happy and financially secure. And with the end of the school year, your children will pass another milestone – and move one step closer to adulthood. Consider the following ways to help your children at various stages of their lives. When your children are young: Teach them to be savers – Encourage young children to put away part of their allowance. You can even offer to match their contributions dollar for dollar. Help them become investors – Consider giving your children a few shares of stock in companies with which they are familiar. By following the movements of their stocks with them, you can explain how the markets work and how increasing share ownership is one key to helping build wealth. Contribute to an RESP – With a Registered Education Savings Plan, you can put aside money for your children’s post-secondary education. In addition, RESP owners are eligible for the Canada Education Savings Grant (CESG). When your children enter the working world: Encourage them to save for the future – A Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) is a great retirement savings vehicle. Your children might also consider a Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA). You can open one, as well – every Canadian resident who has reached the age of majority can contribute up to $5,000 annually to a TFSA. Make long-term care arrangements – If you needed long-term care, such as an extended nursing home stay, and you had inadequate financial preparations, the burden could fall on your children. Now is the time to consult with your financial advisor to begin preparing for possible long-term care costs. When your children reach middle age: Communicate your financial situation and estate plans – Don’t leave adult children in the dark as to your financial information. Share everything you can about how much you own, where you keep your assets and how you plan to eventually distribute them. By clearly communicating your situation and wishes now, you can avoid major problems later. Create a power of attorney – By creating a power of attorney, you can appoint another person, such as an adult child, to conduct your business and financial affairs if you become physically or mentally incapacitated. Such a move can help reduce stress your children may be feeling, while allowing them to make moves that can help preserve your finances. By following the above suggestions, you can help position your children for financial success throughout their lifetime. The day this issue of Windsor Life is distributed is Mar. 21, the first day of spring. The theme, Your Place or Mine?, is an invitation we extend to our readers to shake off cabin fever and step inside to see some of the really beautiful homes that have been recently built or renovated in Essex and Kent Counties. Although the weather is a little behind the season, it is time to start thinking about refreshing our own homes. A thorough spring cleaning is a good place to start. I don’t know how things work in your home but in ours, we’d rather repaint than wash walls. One project often leads to another, giving us the incentive to tweak or outright transform our spaces. In Windsor Life’s featured home, you can appreciate how owner Aimee anticipated her personal need to change up the décor periodically. The new Riverside house she designed for her family has timeless and traditional architectural features that can adapt to modern or classic accents. The colour scheme is primarily soft grey and white so the woman can inject nearly any colour that captures her fancy in future. I am intrigued by the way Aimee has put everything together. This issue contains great ideas for updating and upgrading one room or an entire home, as well as repairing or replacing roofs, windows and other important features. Consider the time you spend reading these pages as enjoyable research. Our valued advertisers tell us that new customers often arrive with copies of Windsor Life tucked under their arms. Our annual Your Place or Mine? issue has a long shelf life, with readers holding onto it as a reference to guide them when they need local sources and specialists for their home projects. I encourage you to do the same. Right now, with Spring finally showing signs of returning, my energy is starting to flow. I am slowly becoming motivated to get on top of tasks that my wife, Carol, has determined I need to do around the house. Hopefully, this year, I will get them done early so we can enjoy the beautiful summer months together. Sincerely,

When David Cassidy invited Windsor Life into his home, it was with the intent to help families like his own gather together over healthy meals – no matter how busy everyone is. The president of Unifor Local 444 has figured out how to get the job done by pre-making meals for the week ahead. He shares this action plan in our Look Who’s Cooking at Home feature. By making homelife a priority, this dad embodies the spirit of Windsor Life’s annual Your Place or Mine? Issue. Creative and tasteful mom and wife, Aimee, also put the kitchen at the heart of the new waterfront home she designed for her family, spotlighted here. Baby Lars is enjoying unwinding at his home, Quiche Kennels in Maidstone. The handsome bouvier des Flandres is a champion who impressed the judges at the Westminister Kennel Club dog show and other prestigious events. Learn what his retirement now holds. Windsor author Melissa Lyons appreciates how much pets mean to their people. She has followed up her first award winning book with ‘Until We Meet Again,’ helping families move from grief to hope after losing a pet. Leo Silvestri and the Monarch Butterfly Enthusiasts of Windsor and Essex County are determined we won’t lose an entire species. The group encourages everyone to be part of the Saving the Monarch Butterfly trinational effort between Canada, United States and Mexico. The Tea Party keeps on rockin’, 29 years after Windsorites Jeff Martin, Jeff Burrows and Stuart Chatwood formed the band. They have a new big hit and are bringing their Black River tour to Caesars Windsor on April 18. Windsor Life also brings you the stars of the 30th North American International Auto Show in Detroit, where trucks and SUVs dominated. Local students Grant Quinlan and Roman DeAngelis are burning rubber, racing at Daytona and other prestigious tracks. Opportunities to cheer on athletes in our own backyard are being created at St. Clair College’s South Windsor campus, where a new Sports Park is now under construction. The complex for soccer, softball, beach volleyball and tennis is to be completed in 2020. Happy reading!

new navy blue or emerald green work well with the dove grey. I really love design and decorating. It’s a strong passion for me,” Aimee says. For this house, “I worked closely with our builder, Lakeland Homes. We took one of their homes that I had toured and then we customized it for the lot, turning it sideways so the front of the house faces the park. We customized the interior to take advantage of the views of the water.” “Lakeland had so many great trades that we did custom moulding, panelled walls and wainscoting,” says Aimee. She instructed the woodwork be painted white, including the staircase’s balusters and newel post. To give the colour scheme weight, a dark hand-scraped walnut wood floor was laid throughout. Aimee says, “This was the first

KNOWING THAT SHE LIKES TO change things up frequently, a local woman decided to build in room for flexibility in the home she and her husband had constructed for their family more than four years ago in Tecumseh. “My last house was very Tuscan, which was lovely,” Aimee says. However, such a defined statement limited where she could take the décor next. For her new three-level waterfront home on Riverside Drive East, she chose a traditional theme, offset with contemporary notes here and there, inside and out. A classic palette of soft greys and white opened up future possibilities. “Longterm, you’re going to want to make changes and add. When you have a neutral backdrop you can bring in new colours and update with current trends without having to do a major repainting. The

time that I had used hand-scraped in my designs. I was hesitant, wondering if over time I would still like it. It was a newer trend when I selected it five years ago. I think it’s timeless and will remain a trend.” With more than 3,000 square feet to decorate, Aimee could revel in shopping for finishes, fixtures, furnishings and accessories for the great room, four bedrooms, three bathrooms, powder room, family room and other spaces. While her design sensibilities guided her decisions, top of mind was that she was creating a home for her husband and teenaged son and daughter. The open concept great room would enable everyone to share mealtime and sit together to watch Lake St. Clair in all its moods. “I wanted to make the kitchen special,” Aimee says. “With it being so open and part of the living room, it’s really important the kitchen is beautiful.” To achieve her desired all-white kitchen, she chose white traditional cabinetry. Ann Sacks tile formed the backsplash. “Marble countertops weren’t practical so I went with white Cambria quartz.” Wall sconces on either side of the rangehood and two chrome and crystal chandeliers within drum shades over the island “give an elegant yet soft look to the kitchen,” Aimee says. Working with interior designers Sherri Gyetvai and Bernice Winkup at GW Designs, the woman forged ahead with the living room. A pair of tuxedo sofas tailored in dove grey were custom

made for the living room. Two bergère armchairs belonging to Aimee’s mother were painted grey and recovered in a grey striped velvet. Another family heirloom, a wooden armoire, relates to the dark flooring. “The cocktail table is from my childhood in my mother’s house in Arizona. It is Lucite and glass – a modern timeless piece that shows how 30 years later, something can still be relevant and current,” Aimee says. Generally, the family eats at the kitchen island. “I’m not a formal entertainer, so my dining room doesn’t get used much,” Aimee admits. When it is in service, everyone congregates around the Restoration Hardware wooden table and grey velvet upholstered chairs. “The room’s design started with the chandelier, a pewter orb cage surrounding crystals.” Infusing the traditional home with playfulness, Aimee found several white resin antlers and hung them around a white filigreed mirror above a white gloss and chrome console table in the foyer. “I thought it was a fun, whimsical design choice.” “In small areas, that’s where you can have fun with your design and be more trendy because it’s easier to change when design trends change,” Aimee finds. She tested her theory in the powder room. “I always like to do my powder rooms kind of crazy and over the top, outside the design of the rest of the house. It’s something unexpected when people come to your home.” When she found chartreuse, black and white wallpaper in a block pattern, Aimee decided it delivered the wow factor. She had the ceiling painted the matching green tone and incorporated white crown moulding. A white floating vanity that Aimee designed now supports a white vessel sink. Mirrored and crystal wall sconces and chandelier in a Moroccan motif and the white and grey veined marble floor contributed luxury. Also on the main floor is the home office, with a wall of French doors overlooking the lake. “I don’t know that you can get a better place to sit in this house and enjoy the beautiful view of the water,” says Aimee. Hints of Lucite carried over from the living room to the office with X-legs on the upholstered stools in front of the wooden desk and button-tufted leather executive chair. Upstairs, the master bedroom suite is a true escape, with grey walls, a natural gas

fireplace and white mantel. “I had fallen in love with emerald green velvet so I had the upholstered bed custom made for the bedroom,” Aimee says. Wall mirrors framed with white moulding echo the wall of French doors leading to the large second-floor balcony and outdoor sitting area. “I love mirrors in rooms, especially done with moulding. I put them behind the bed and they reflect the water view beautifully.” More mirrors were installed in Aimee’s “dream walk-in closet.” She says, “I worked with a local closet company to design the closet. Mirrors on the doors give it an open feel. When you’re trying on clothes, you can see at all times what you are wearing. I like doors on a closet. I’m not as organized as I’d like to be, so it makes the dressing room neat and tidy. It keeps the dust off things, as well.” Sunlight spills in through a large window above the vanity at one end of the dressing room. “I had an antique chair recovered with pink velvet and put it in front of my makeup area to get the natural light.” The dressing room and other spaces are so tailored for Aimee and her family that she had a tough time choosing to sell the home several months ago, utilizing agent Terra Lavack of Keller Williams. “It was built as a family home to live in and enjoy,” she says. “It’s been lovely here. Our family is changing, though, and I decided it is time for a change of home, as well.” She is pleased the new owners of “the perfect family home” have three children. “I ran out of projects to do here,” Aimee says. “I’m always looking for the next project - which partially spurred me on to move.” Downsizing as she and her husband begin transitioning toward empty nesting, Aimee is now immersed in completely renovating an older home the couple bought in Pilot’s Cove. How can leftovers be efficiently reheated without sacrificing flavour tomorrow? What is the proper way to wash out the red wine spill spreading on your tablecloth? Determining the right answers to these common questions is simplified, thanks to advances in eco and smart technology built into the new generation of home appliances. “These machines are much more than appliances; they are your partners in getting household chores done with minimal effort, thought and time,” says Chris Stevens of Essex Appliance Centre. For instance, the Whirlpool Smart Dishwasher uses its own sensor mode to decide the best cycle to clean the dirty dishes you’ve loaded. Remain in control with an app that lets you customize your preferred cycles on your smartphone. The refrigerator has been elevated to a tech centre by Samsung. On display in Essex Appliance Centre’s huge showroom is the Family Hub fridge, equipped with a 21.5-inch tablet on its door that enables the family to watch TV, go on the Internet, post digital memos, share a calendar and find recipes. “It has a camera monitoring the inside of the fridge and will notify you before anything spoils. The fridge can also compile a grocery list so you won’t run short,” Chris says. Not everyone wants that level of tech in their home, of course. “It’s terrific that even more basic appliances now often have features that were once considered high-end, adding convenience and simplicity to daily tasks,” Chris explains. One of his personal favourite features is the steam cycle included in various dryers. “I try to avoid ironing. If I forget to take my

26

W i n d s o r

L i f e

laundry out of the dryer and it becomes wrinkled, or if I can’t be bothered ironing a shirt already hanging in my closet, I touch the steam cycle button and let the machine smooth the fabric in minutes.” Rather than washing lightly worn clothing, “you can toss it in the steam dryer and quickly refresh it for a second day’s wear,” says Chris. “It removes dog hair, too.” Certain washers also have a steam cycle which is effective in eliminating stains, dirt, pet dander and many household allergens. Stained fabric can be pre-treated in a small wash tub built into the top of some washers. As for cooking, “most of us want to eat healthy yet are pressed for time,” Chris acknowledges. “Induction cooking appliances boil water in 90 seconds and cook food four times faster than gas. That gets a hot meal on the table in a flash. Our customers are eating up induction cooking.” The elements on an induction cooktop or stove use an electromagnetic field, rather than radiant heat, as with traditional cooktops. “The element doesn’t generate the heat, the pot does,” Chris says. “To check if your existing cookware will work on an induction stove, hold a magnet over the bottom of each pot. If the magnet sticks, the pot will work.” He points out, “Many manufacturers are giving a free set of pots with the purchase of a new induction stove.” Another timesaver is cooking two meals at two different temperatures in one oven. “It’s made possible with clever double ovens engineered in a single stove,” Chris explains. “Our customers tell us that usually they don’t need the capacity of a big oven,” he observes. With a double oven, if pizza is on the menu, just the upper half is turned on, cutting energy consumption. “There is less fluctuation of the temperature as the four corners are closer in a small oven.” To maximize oven space, Samsung has created its Flex Duo oven. “It is equipped with a removable sheet that divides the one large oven into two small ovens whenever you want two baking or roasting zones,” Chris says. As one large oven, the Samsung Flex Duo can bake several racks of cookies simultaneously. “At Thanksgiving, go ahead and buy the big turkey. The oven can accommodate it. The built-in probe lets you monitor the temperature so the meat will be perfectly cooked.” Kitchen appliances need to do more than perform well, they must also complement the décor. “The popularity of open plan kitchens and great rooms puts major appliances front and centre,” Chris says. Manufacturers are designing accordingly. “One of the top finishes is black stainless steel, a tinted finish on stainless which it isn’t as commercial looking.” To address the challenge of fingerprints marring the clean surface, Maytag and Frigidaire make appliances with a blemish proof finish. “There are many enhancements available now in appliances that most people are not yet aware of. Our knowledgeable, no-pressure salespeople are happy to educate our customers so they can make informed choices when browsing our 12,000 square foot showroom,” says Chris. Many appliances are stocked in the 15,000 square foot warehouse and ready for free delivery in Essex and Kent Counties. Owners Gord and Cathy Stevens keep prices low with their warehouse style approach. When repairs are required, Essex Appliance Centre’s own service department looks after customers. “We’re proud to be a local, independent, family business,” Chris says. “We appreciate the generations of neighbours who have shopped here for over 30 years.”

Everything You Need Under One Roof AFTER FOUR YEARS IN BUSINESS, the Truax Design Centre continues to be a gem for home builders, designers and home owners. Whether you are looking to enhance a room, embark on a kitchen renovation or building your dream home, you will be impressed by the products and services offered. Located at 3585 Rhodes Drive in Windsor, Jeremy Truax opened the Truax Design Centre in 2015 in response to the demand from builders and home owners for a “showroom where all the details were under one roof ”. A natural extension of Truax Lumber, located in Kingsville, it features the latest trends and exciting new products on the market. Whether you are a home owner or a builder, you can come to Truax and be confident you are dealing with a seasoned trade professional who is highly familiar with the products and services we offer,” says Jeremy. “Between the two locations, renovations and new builds can work seamlessly together in every aspect of the project.” “We like to say that we provide the jewellery for the home,” says Mary-Ann Gander, Kitchen Designer/Sales. Her enthusiasm helps calm you through what can be a stressful process. “We want to bring you on-trend options that you won’t see anywhere else, at competitive price points. Here, you can walk in and see an expansive showcase of door hardware, closet organization options, interior doors and trim, kitchen and vanity displays and cabinet hardware options.” Kitchen and vanity cabinetry is one of the most popular departments at the Truax Design Centre. To showcase the “latest and greatest”, we are eagerly awaiting for our newest kitchen display to be installed. We are so proud of the fact that we were able to find 2 lines of cabinetry that are 100% Canadian made. Professionals are on staff to make all of your projects a reality, from design to build. Registered interior designer, Shannon Dinham (ARIDO, ASID, IDC, NCIDQ) has a diverse background in residential, commercial and hospitality design. She thrives on developing creative solutions for all your design needs. “Clients love that they can come to one location and items are tangible states Shannon. They are realizing that their physical

environment can greatly improve their mood and are looking to incorporate their personal style and well-being into designs.” Embarking on a kitchen renovation can be a daunting task. It is the focal point of many homes so you want to ensure that you consider a variety of factors. At Truax, they take the stress out of the equation by asking the right questions and assisting clients throughout the process. Questions like: How often do you cook? Do you love to entertain? Are you a baker? All of these scenarios can determine the correct planning and direction your kitchen design should take. Efficient kitchen design provides clients with clever storage solutions. Some specialty items include pull out pantries, lazy susans, wine and spice racks as they will

maximize your cabinetry footprint. If incorporated from the planning stages, these features can help personalize and maintain an organized workspace. This crucial planning phase is where our guidance can help you to create a sensational, functional, personal kitchen. Truax Design Centre also prides itself on their exemplary customer service. “The level of service that we deliver is unlike anything you will find elsewhere. From the initial consultation to completion of the project, we are available for our customers. Every

homeowner is different, it is not a cookie-cutter approach at Truax,” says Mary-Ann. “We take the time to truly listen to you and your needs”. “With a little bit of imagination and confidence there is no reason that we can’t all have beautiful homes. Small details can make a world of difference in enhancing a home.” Before embarking on a major project, customers are encouraged to schedule an initial consultation with Mary-Ann and Shannon to go over their goals and vision. A preliminary design will then be created followed by a realistic 3-dimensional drawing. “Many people have seen this on popular home improvement television programs. Amazing renderings are created in real time that show customers what they can expect. It also easily allows for colours, products etc. to be switched up.”

THE TEA PARTY

STORY BY KAREN PATON-EVANS PHOTOGRAPHY BY DAVID MCDONALD PHOTOGRAPHY @DAVIDMCDPHOTOS

BLACK RIVER PUTS WINDSOR BAND BACK ON TOP WINDSOR’S OWN ROCKERS, The Tea Party, are topping the charts with their new hit, Black River, and back on tour. Jeff Martin, Jeff Burrows and Stuart Chatwood are performing for their hometown audience at Caesars Windsor, 8 pm, Thurs., April 18. Stuart (bass, keyboards, mandolin and harmonium) spoke with Windsor Life. WL: Fans who wondered what The Tea Party has been doing the last 4 years are being rewarded for their patience with your new music and big tour. Has it felt like old times, back writing songs and recording with the two Jeffs? SC: Yeah, more so than ever. The new music we’re writing feels more like the stuff we were making in our prime of 1997, the Transmission record. Jeff Martin has set up a beautiful studio in Australia, and Jeff Burrows and I are fortunate enough to take the winter months to go down there and work on some new songs. We have to look out for snakes – I’m being completely serious, there are a lot of snakes there. Giant spiders. Land monitor [lizards] which are a Komodo dragon type creature; there are two of those on his property and they eat turtles for fun. It’s quite a dangerous place at nighttime and lends

to the character. Hopefully some of it will come out in the music. Maybe we’ll have some jungle rock coming out! For us and touring, it’s been nice since the band got back together in 2012, which was the first major tour….in 2015 we had the 20th anniversary of The Edges of Twilight and in 2017, the same thing with Transmission. It was a pleasure to play a lot of the songs that we haven’t played very often to some of the new fans who’ve come on board and weren’t there back in the heyday in the late nineties when we were doing stadiums. This March, we’ve got new music. It’s nice to not be touring to celebrate a record of the past and now looking towards the future. We ran an interesting competition online of favourite singles of the band’s career. It gave us a real insight into which songs to include in our setlist. Every day, 2, 3, 4,000 people were hopping on to vote, deliberate and suffer the agony of their favourite song going down. (The winner of The Tea Party Singles Face Off was Sister Awake, with Psychopomp in second place). WL: Your new single, Black River, is doing well. How does it feel to know that radio stations are finding your latest song very playable? And that several entities wanted to be part of it?

SC: The president of Warner [Music] heard it and said, “I want to do this.” The deal was done in two days. Back in 1992, 9 or 10 record companies came to see us but it was always a case of negotiating and begging, “Can we please make our own record ourselves?” We’ve never had this happen before where someone actually wanted us earnestly. We had quite a good feeling that the song would do well on radio. It’s gone beyond our expectations. We were hoping for a top 10 and now it’s a top 5. (At press time, Black River was number 2 on Canadian Rock Radio). WL: If you knew the secret of time travel, what would you now tell your younger self when The Tea Party first hit the music scene?

SC: I think you have to learn lessons yourself. You can tell people, “Be nice to people on the way up, you might see them on the way down. Don’t count your chickens till they hatch.” We had to go through that ourselves. We were in Europe and we got word that we were supporting Lenny Kravitz across North America. We bought all this champagne and partied, then 2 weeks later we lost the gig.

Opposite: The Tea Party is playing in their hometown during their North American Black River tour on Thurs., April 18. Another Windsor band, Autumn Kings, is opening the show at the Colosseum, Caesars Windsor. A portion of the ticket sales will be donated to the Windsor Cancer Research Group. Top: Playing guitar, sitar, hurdy gurdy and harpguitar, Jeff Martin founded The Tea Party with Jeff Burrows and Stuart Chatwood in 1990. Above: Jeff Burrows is a master of drums and percussion. Left: Stuart Chatwood helps create the band’s signature rock sound with bass, keyboards, mandolin and harmonium. Y o u r

“It’s like getting a new pair of shoes — you want to wear them out of the store!” - Loyal customer Dessa Kaspardlov -

I think we were supposed to play with the Rolling Stones like 6 times. We ended up playing with them in 2003 at the big SARS concert. But the first 2 times were cancelled because of the ice storm. It was like we were doomed not to meet the Stones and play with them. But we eventually met them; Keith Richards fell over on me and I saved him and saved the show. That’s another story. Looking back, I’m glad we weren’t a one hit wonder. At the time, we were jealous of all these bands that came out and our songs didn’t do that well in the States.…but in retrospect, we’ve had a long career. I’ve known personally too many bands who have the one hit wonder and all of a sudden, they act like idiots. They have an entourage and then the second last chapter is the tax man comes and the final chapter is they hit Skid Row. We’re very thankful it’s been a slow growth. It’s enabled us to be professional performers, on and off the stage. It’s good. WL: Global TV chose The Tea Party’s Fire in the Head as one of its Legendary Canadian Songs to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday.

SC: That’s a big honour. When you cross the barrier into being remembered, that’s great. Someone showed us a Sydney, Australia newspaper about somebody forming a new band that sounds like The Tea Party. We’re a point of reference for people now who want to do world music and rock music together. It’s really an honour – and a goal achieved. WL: Windsor is certainly proud of its hometown boys. SC: I’m thankful for people coming out to support the band. We’re getting embraced better than ever at home right now. I’d like to give a shout out to 89X; the station is so supportive of The Tea Party and other local bands – including Autumn Kings, which is opening for us. This is the second time we’ve headlined at Caesars Windsor and they do a great job. The Colosseum is probably one of the best sounding rooms in Canada. If you’re thinking of checking out the band and want a comfortable seat, great sight lines, great sound and great lights, then this is definitely the show. Tickets for The Tea Party concert at The Colosseum start at $23 and are on sale now at caesarswindsor.com. WLM

QUINN ROOFING SOLUTIONS

New Headquarters and Residential Services to Better Serve Clients

Ken and Sue Quinn of Quinn Roofing Solutions

SINCE LAUNCHING its residential division in 2018, the dedicated team at Quinn Roofing Solutions has been actively shingling new homes and replacing existing shingle roofs at older ones. “Previously, we focused solely on our commercial and industrial business. However, our clients were asking us if we could do their homes, as well,” says co-founder Sue Quinn. “We also receive a tremendous number of phone calls from people who heard about us and need residential roofing services. By adding our new division, we are now able to oblige everyone and expand our client base.” Demand took off at such a pace, the Quinn team soon found they were running out of room. “The last 7 months have been spent renovating our new, larger facility at 620 N. Service Rd. in Windsor. On Feb. 22, we officially moved in,” Sue says. With nearly 22,000 square feet of building space on over 4 acres of property, “we have more space for future growth.” While creating a more modern, bright and highly functional new home for Quinn Roofing Solutions, Sue was careful to retain original elements and showcase the character of the attractive and historic building. More staff have been added to take care of residential customers. “While our commercial work takes our team throughout southwestern Ontario, we are concentrating our residential roofing projects in Windsor-Essex and the outlying counties at this point,” says Sue. The expansion of the company’s physical space also significantly supports the commercial and industrial side of Quinn’s business. Ken Quinn, co-founder and Sue’s husband, says, “The physical flow of this new facility allows us to be more streamlined and productive in all facets of the business, from stocking supplies, volume buying discounts and in-house services, including a custom sheet metal shop.” Quinn is a certified applicator for

most major roofing system manufacturers, including IKO, Carlisle, Garland and Soprema. The Windsor company is also this region’s exclusive source for the DuroLast roof system, a low maintenance, lightweight system that is resistant to chemicals, fire and high winds. “We have found Duro-Last to be one of the industry’s most durable and energyefficient single-ply system for flat and low-sloped roofs,” Ken says. An experienced Quinn Roofing sales representative guides each client in making smart choices. Then a project manager heads up the process, seeing it through to completion. On the jobsite, Quinn’s health and safety coordinator and quality control manager check on the roofing team to ensure work is done safely and properly. The company adheres to strict internal and external guidelines in compliance with mandatory regulations and industry best practices. Ken says, “It is important to us that our clients are assured that the highest standards are being observed during their roofing project.” Installing roofs that endure, Quinn is fully trained and certified to offer all industry-leading manufacturer warranties, including Duro-Last’s 15-year comprehensive No Dollar Limit nocharge warranty. An optional 20-year warranty is also available. Quinn offers warranties backed by the Ontario Industrial Roofing Contractors Association and the Canadian Roofing Contractors Association. If roof repairs are needed, Quinn’s fully trained service professionals are only a phone call away. “This is a really exciting time. Our business has been steadily expanding since we began in 2002. Now, we have this amazing fresh start in this terrific building,” says Sue. “Most importantly, we now have more opportunities in which to serve our customers.” An open invitation to tour Quinn’s new facility will be extended this spring. Sue says, “Everyone is welcome to our open house!”

Nothing You Wear Is More Important Than Your Smile IF A SMILE IS WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS then a new set of dentures is priceless. At Parisien Denture Clinic, Barry Parisien DD and his team of professionals take pride in their craftsmanship and making customers feel comfortable. Whether it is a new set of dentures or correcting ill-fitting existing ones, Barry and his team can help. “At the first appointment I take a lot of time with clients to find out what the person is looking for and the budget they have to work with. Every case is unique,” states Parisien. Today there are more options than ever before for getting that perfect smile. Implants have become increasingly popular and a great option for those looking to get the best fit possible. “Implants can stop a person’s full lower denture from moving while chewing, enabling them to eat the foods that they want”, Barry says. In many instances fear of the unknown prevents people from getting implants. “Often it is the perception of pain that keeps people away from getting implants, which I completely understand. However, many clients are amazed after the implant surgery to find that it wasn't anywhere near as bad as what they were expecting.” Clients are unanimous in the life improvement that their new smile brings. “Quality of life is a huge motivating factor in clients’ decision to get new dentures. Often clients remark that with their old dentures they had to stay away from certain foods. With their new

dentures, especially on implants, they are able to eat the foods that they want to eat, not what they had to eat because of their old dentures. And of course they are no longer embarrassed by their smile.” “We have various solutions to help work within people’s expectations and budgets,” states Barry. “We accept all major insurance companies and payment methods.” Barry has been practicing Denturism in Windsor since 2000. Denturists are specialists in the fabrication of full and partial dentures, including teeth retained by implants. He has taught courses across Canada to denturists and dental technicians, sharing his expertise and techniques to achieve more natural looking and better functioning dentures. The Parisien Denture Clinic is also able to provide effective solutions for custom-made, anti-snoring and sleep apnea devices. What’s better than a restful sleep?! When it comes to such an important focal point on your face that can make the difference between a smile or a frown call the experienced team at the Parisien Denture Clinic. WINNING DRIVERS

Windsor Area Racers Showing Their Stuff STORY/PHOTOGRAPHY BY DICK HILDEBRAND

Grant Quinlan

involved in the NASCAR K&N series and did quite well, particularly last year when he finished in the top five three times, and the top ten five times. K&N racing is an American series with most events on the east coast, usually New Jersey, Virginia, North Carolina and Florida. Earlier this year, Grant finished third in the 200 mile ARCA Daytona at the legendary speedway in the Sunshine State. “I’d like to take a shot at full-time racing down the road,” says Grant, “I’d certainly like to make something out of it.” In the meantime, he remains in contact with his good friend, Roman DeAngelis, who, at the age of 17, was the youngest competitor in the 24 hours of Daytona. In fact, the two raced go karts together and remain in contact today.

Grant Quinlan has his priorities straight. The 20 year-old Lakeshore resident loves motor racing and has been fairly successful the last few years, but he’s slowed his schedule a bit because of his education. Currently in his third year of mechanical engineering studies at the University of Windsor and set to graduate next year, it would seem his career is not having a negative effect on his education. In fact, he’s been on the Dean’s list for the last two years…still waiting for word on his chances this year. He also works for his dad who’s in the construction business.

Roman DeAngelis

He’s been competing for a number of years, and like most professional drivers, he started off in go karts at the age of 6. By the age of 12 he was racing Legends cars and stayed behind the wheel for a couple of years before moving on to bigger and faster cars in 2014. He ran in the CRA all-star series for a year and finished third overall in the points. The following year he won the CRA ARCA Super Series championship after stepping into one of the series’ specially prepared cars. ARCA racers are identical to NASCAR vehicles in terms of the chassis. They sport fiberglass bodies and are powered by identical 700 horsepower Crate V-8 engines manufactured by Ilmore, the same company that produces Indycar powerplants. In 2016 Grant joined the Rette Jones Racing team, which was

Just having turned 18 several weeks ago, Roman is looking forward to the upcoming race season. The Windsor native is in his final year at Ste. Anne’s High School and intends to study engineering at one of the universities to which he’s applied. And as he puts it, “to have an engineering degree and race cars at the same time is the ultimate life experience.” He started karting around the age of 10 by “going to the track, driving around doing laps.” His father, Max, an avid race fan and occasional competitor was the catalyst that fueled the young man’s interest in the sport. He did most of his practicing at the Point Pelee Karting Club in Leamington and at his first race, he took the checkered flag. “It was a great way to catch the bug,” he says, “and things began escalating a lot quicker than I had expected and I started karting nationally and internationally.” In 2013, after competing with Team Canada in the Rotax Max Grand Finals, he began testing Formula Ford for Brian Graham Racing out of Toronto and ran with the team for about two years until he was invited to race a Porsche 997 Cup Car in the FARA 500 in Homestead Florida, an event in which his father had originally been slated to participate. Roman’s

adeptness around the track caught the eye of fellow competitor Marco Cirone who convinced his sponsor, Mark Motors, a huge upscale Ottawa sports car dealership, to give the 15 year-old a chance to drive in the Canadian Porsche Series. In 2017, Roman became the youngest Canadian to win the championship in his native country and placed third in the U.S. challenge, even after missing three events. After renewing his contract with Mark Motors last year, he graduated to the Platinum class, where he finished second in both Canada and the U.S. At the same time, he ran in three IMSA sanctioned events, of which he won two…once in Daytona and again in Sebring. This past November, Roman got a call from Audi, asking him to be part of the four-drive team in the 24 hours of Daytona, aboard an R8 LMS GT3. After a series of mishaps, red flags and bad weather, Roman pitted from the lead and ended up finishing third in his class…the youngest Canadian ever and third youngest in the world to compete in the grueling 24-hour competition. This season, Roman will again drive a Porsche for Mark Motors in Canada and Kelly Moss in the states which is partnered with Children’s Hospital of Alabama that treats childhood cancers. “It’s a good place to be,” says the young driver, “and Porsche is the right company to be with. They have an excellent program for young guys like me and I’ve got plenty of time to improve myself before making a showing in a pro series like Daytona.” In the meantime, he’ll continue his physical training at least 5 times a week and when time permits, will be at a part-time job washing vehicles for a local trucking firm. Roman DeAngelis definitely has racing in his blood and he’s grateful for the opportunities he’s been given. “And, when you’re at places like Daytona, or Sebring, Road America, or LeMans and see the number of fans they attract, you realize how cool the racing atmosphere is.” It is, he says, an insane physical sport that’s hard on both your body and the mind. “Drivers,” he says, “particularly endurance drivers have to be fit. By the end of my six hours behind the wheel at Daytona, there were two or three days when I didn’t do anything...I was so totally worn out.” While he maintains that any time you’re paid to drive a race car is good, his main goal is to win LeMans, or Daytona…any manufacturer will do! BETH REZOSKI, ROYAL LEPAGE REAL ESTATE The House that Built a Home

states Beth Rezoski, Sales Representative, Royal LePage Binder Real Estate.

“This is the reason I love my job - to see a house raise up a new family.”

Beth has been winning the affection of her clients since 2004 and her enthusiasm is contagious but she states, “There is a ton of information out there but getting the RIGHT information is key.” This year Beth was the recipient of the elite Diamond Award, representing the top 3% of realtors across Canada for Royal LePage, a company founded 106 years ago. Royal LePage is the only real estate chain that has its own national charity, The Shelter Foundation which she is a very proud sponsor. Beth donates a portion of each commission to help local women and children escape domestic violence.

The young, newlywed couple were excited to meet the seller of their new home during the final walk through, the night before the keys are handed over to the buyers. The tall elderly man stood proud as he shook their hands. The house was his pride and joy, built by him some 50 years ago. They watched their kids grow up there, leave and bring back children of their own to enjoy the fresh fruit from the trees in the back yard. With his wife now living in a nursing home, he wanted to live closer to her to assist with her care (think The Notebook movie). He showed us pictures of his wife with such love in his eyes. Anxious to teach the young couple all the features of the home, the secret spaces and special care that should be given to maintain its pristine condition. The owner’s daughter stood there with tears in her eyes listening to her dad give instructions to them like a nurse showing first time parents how to hold a new baby. It was a huge undertaking for her to get the house ready for sale. The process of sifting through every item, decluttering and letting go of the contents and...the memories. “At times, it felt as if each room was waking up as the newlywed couple walked through the halls, planning their future there, and the house stands ready to welcome and protect its new family. It’s such an honour to be part of this new chapter in people’s lives and to do this as a career is pretty cool. I’m very blessed and grateful,”

Beth prides herself on asking a lot of authentic questions and takes written notes (old habits from working in the legal world) communicating that she's all-in and the right, dependable agent for the job. “I'm so grateful for the opportunity to help people list and sell their homes and excited to help them with all aspects of their move.” “Don't wait until your house is in perfect order,” she says, “I prefer to see a home before it’s ready for market, as I can save the sellers money and time changing things that don't necessarily increase the value.” She states that sometimes it’s a year later when clients call her back in to list. “I love to see the transformation of the house once they’ve implemented some of my advice, I always tell them to make it look like you are walking into a suite at the Marriott!” Give Beth a call today to help get you to the next chapter of your story.

BAYVIEW GLASS AND MIRROR LTD. Enhance Your Home with Glass If you are looking to freshen up your home or office space glass railings can be the solution you are looking for. Working within your budget, the experienced staff at Bayview Glass and Mirror Ltd. can offer innovative solutions to brighten and modernize your home. “Interior glass railings are a great option to update and brighten a living space,” said Eric LaMarre, owner of Bayview Glass. “We have worked with many clients to come up with barrier-free, modern, sleek solutions for glass railings.” Glass brightens the otherwise dull appearance of rooms by reflecting light and enhancing their visual appeal. Increasingly, homeowners are opting for glass to give a contemporary, luxurious and organized look to their décor. “If you want to redesign your home, then incorporating custom glass is the best way to turn your ordinary rooms into masterpieces,” states LaMarre. Glass railings can also increase the value of your home should you wish to sell.” The benefits of glass railings are numerous. With their sleek design, low required maintenance and great customization potential it’s an attractive option for homeowners. They are also a practical design solution. Glass railings provide a cost effective and versatile solution to various design challenges. A glass railing in your home, around a deck or at your business can open up any space. Their sleek design allows natural sunlight to pour in making the space feel more open. Unlike wooden railings, glass railings require little maintenance. They don’t weather nearly as fast or require regular maintenance. A simple cleaning will make them look like new. Glass railings are also safe and extremely durable. They provide a way to ensure safety on decks and staircases, preventing the possibility of a fall. They also offer protection from the external elements when installed outdoors. These railings will not corrode due to water exposure, crack due to extreme temperatures, or change color due to any number of factors. The tempered glass panels are designed to withstand all of the possible environmental factors, unlike wooden surfaces. After a couple years, wooden railings are generally weathered and in need of repair or replacement. Glass railings offer excellent durability and will continue to look great for a much longer period of time. With over 30 years of experience, Bayview Glass and Mirror Ltd. take pleasure in working with clients to design options that are aesthetically pleasing and functional. No job is too big or too small. In fact LaMarre loves

a challenge to create an innovative solution for his clients. Estimates are provided free of charge. All of the production is completed on-site which means that projects can typically be completed in 4-6 weeks. In addition to railings, Bayview Glass and Mirror are industry leaders for glass showers, mirrors, glass counters, wine cellars and more. “If it’s made of glass we do it,” said LaMarre. “We work with the client to ensure they are satisfied. Basically the sky is the limit when it comes to what can be done with glass.” They also stand behind their workmanship. Their warranty includes one year for labour and up to five years for parts. Sales Representative, Jules (left) and Owner Richard Kehl display the Colour by Nature wood stained vinyl custom casement window.

When You Buy Kehl ...You Buy Factory-Direct More than just an assembler and supplier, Kehl Windows and Doors designs and manufactures its own products locally in Harrow, including vinyl and hybrid energy-efficient window systems that owner Richard Kehl has developed over 25 years. He says, “By meeting personally with our clients, we have been able to respond to their needs with custom-made solutions.” Supplying and installing products for renovation, new construction and commercial projects, Richard says, “We are the only manufacturer in Windsor-Essex County to have the Fenestration Canada Installer Program and have been awarded Energy Star Canada’s Most Efficient Product for 10 years.” Being NFRC and Energy Star Certified differs from being a window dealer. “We have to test our products and insulated glass every three years and are audited four times yearly to ensure we’re fabricating the product as tested. This process is similar to ISO certification where quality is continually monitored.” Manufacturing windows and door in the future will be changing dramatically with the new energy codes, by 2025 the old vertical sliding and horizontal sliding or double slider/double hung windows will be obsolete for they are not efficient., manufactures need to up there game with new products.

“What is unique about our window and door system is that it can be put together like a building block set: Windows, entry doors and sliding doors can be coupled together to form walls of glass,” he explains. “Our state-of-the-art reinforcement system doesn’t require any wood framing for structural support.”

Every award that Kehl Windows and Doors had received for its intelligent, efficient solutions has provided motivation to perfect its next innovation. For 2019, Kehl has launched 3 new products. The Celestica stackable sliding door, comes with 3 panels of which 2 slide on top of the 3rd as a Florida door complete with a retractable multi chamber screen. One exciting introduction is Kehl’s no-rot entrance and sliding door systems, made without wood. “They are fabricated with vinyl and composites which can be shaped and processed to any custom size,” says Richard. Also new is Kehls new compression window system, acts like a casement but no operator, opens for full cleaning, tilts for venting, hinges adjust up and down and left to right for adjustment like no other, hardware surrounds the entire window for

the greatest forced entry level on the market. This system can also be made into a door with lockable one action side lite hardware. Comes custom sized in wood grain and 30 colours. Designers and homeowners are loving Kehl’s new Colour by Nature staining system, allowing all Kehl products to be stained to complement the building’s existing trim and millwork. “This is not a laminate or film - we actually stain the vinyl in-house,” Richard assures. With Kehl’s all-in-one system, vinyl interior and exterior adaptors fit wall cavity depths and interior/exterior measurements of every size. “Since our windows and doors are custom-fabricated, all molding is pre-cut in our plant for optimization and quality. We only use durable vinyl – never metal – to complete back jambs and other spaces,” Richard says. Insulated glass is made in-house with the thermax Xl system, which uses a metal-free warm edge spacer system and two coats of silver low emittance glass. “It produces one of the most energy efficient units on the market,” Richard notes. “We keep your window measurements in our database, so replacement is a snap if glass gets broken.” As the local, factory-direct manufacturer of high-end windows, doors and insulated glass, Kehl Windows and Doors has total control over its quality, value, installation and guarantee. Richard says, “You can depend on 100% coverage on all Kehl parts, workmanship and labour. Our warranties are lifetime for the home owner, transferrable and non-prorated.”

CHANGING THE PLAYING FIELD Construction Underway On New St. Clair College Sports Park STORY BY KIM WILLIS / ILLUSTRATIONS BY ARCHITECTTURA BY EARLY 2020 ST. CLAIR COLLEGE will have its own field of dreams. Construction has begun on a new $21.5 million state-of-the-art Sports Park at the South Windsor campus. The multi-use facility will include a1,500 seat soccer field complete with artificial turf, digital score board and press box, a 400 seat softball diamond with artificial field, team rooms and scoreboard, concession stands, and four lighted beach volleyball courts with a lounge. Indoor tennis courts will be developed in the latter part of the project. Plans also include an additional pond at the entrance of the college with multiple seating areas for students and a Beacon entrance presented by Windsor Family Credit Union. The multi-year project will see the complete rejuvenation of the College’s current outdoor sports facilities at the south end of the campus. The facility has been a long-time dream for students and faculty. “Thanks to the vision and financial commitment from our students, the Sport Park will allow us to bring our teams home to the college. We also believe that a fit body equals a fit mind. The facility is an investment in the physical well-being of our students,” stated Patti France, President, St. Clair College.

President Patti France shared that the Sports Park is happening because of support from the students who are funding the bulk of the project. For over fifty years the college has had strong athletic programs. However, lack of facilities on campus forced teams to practice and play at various facilities located throughout the community. Not only will the Sports Park be advantageous for students, it will also be available for community use. Plans for the complex were unveiled at a Ground-breaking ceremony held at the college on February 1. The plans are big and bold and are certain to be the envy of colleges across the province. Although the bulk of funding will come from the students, private donors have already shown support for this exciting development. The tennis courts have been named in honour of philanthropists Barry and Stephanie Zekelman. In addition to the four courts, there will be a pro shop and dressing room. Tennis is a sport that has long been near and dear to their hearts. “Tennis is a community builder and is a sport for people of all ages,” said Stephanie. Barry grew up in South Windsor and has been impressed with the ongoing growth and development of St. Clair College over the years. “We are really excited to help make this happen,” stated Barry. “Athletics are a big part of a college experience and sports teach you life lessons like team-building, conflict resolution and social skills that you don’t learn in a classroom.” The soccer stadium will be fully lit and have a seating capacity for 1,500, include a press box and the Domino’s Canada jumbo video score board. Michael Schlater, President and CEO of Domino’s Canada was also in attendance for the ground-breaking. The softball diamond will be fully lit and include portable bleachers for 400 people. Both the Mayor and Warden of the county are excited about the possibilities that the Sports Park will offer to both students and the community at large. “St. Clair College has always been about what’s good for the community. This Sports Park will certainly fill a gap that’s been missing in terms of recreational sports facilities,” said Drew Dilkens, Mayor of Windsor. County Warden Gary McNamara agrees, “We are blessed to have such a fine institution in the community.” Not only are the students providing the bulk of funding, they will also be responsible for the daily operations of the Sports

Park. The project will be overseen by the Student Representative Council (SRC) and the Student Athletic Association. Once complete, the Student Athletic Association will be largely responsible for the facility’s day-to-day operations. For the past 10 years, college survey results have consistently shown the desire from students for additional facilities for recreational and athletic activities. Inadequate funding has been the barrier to moving forward. “It has taken us this long to solidify the capital funding for this project,” said France. “We know that financial constraints have made it difficult for the college (administration) to move ahead with this project until now. Still, according to surveys carried out during the past five to ten years, one of the chief demands by students has been for additional facilities for leisure-time, entertainment, recreational and athletic activities, stated Laura Walker, President of the Student Athletic Association. The bulk of funding for the Sports Park is being provided by the students. St. Clair College students have approved an additional student fee that will contribute $13 million and the Student Athletic Association has pledged an additional $1 million. The outstanding funding will come from donors like Barry and Stephanie Zekelman, Domino’s Pizza and the Windsor Family Credit Union. “It was the perfect opportunity to go to the student body with another referendum. The specially designated student fee would remain in place, an extension of the fee that was initially implemented to construct the college’s SportsPlex (gym and fitness centre) with funds now going to the new Sports Park,” said Ryan Peebles, General Manager, Student Representative Council. It was also very important to students to have a more welcoming, inviting entrance to the college making it a true destination. The landmark Beacon entrance will create college visibility from the highway and create an entrance to the streetscape that provides the walkway through the park. “Creation of an attractive park complete with amenities for spectators was very important to students,” said Peebles. The construction also includes much-needed additional parking. The Sports Park was designed by Windsor’s Architecttura Inc. Construction will be completed by Fortis Group, a local contracting firm. Custom Manufacturing at Factory Direct Prices MADE TO SHADE WINDOW COVERINGS’ solid reputation for selling and installing quality blinds and shades has become well-known throughout its 14 years in business. Company owner Michael Campoli has relied on his family’s Canadian manufacturing facility to provide the products bearing the Made to Shade label. On Jan. 1, the plant rebranded as Made to Shade Window Coverings Manufacturing Ltd. “It’s exciting to evolve Made to Shade in this significant way,” Michael says. Although Made to Shade is based in Windsor, the Campoli family established their manufacturing facility in Toronto where it is centrally located for other companies retailing the Made to Shade brand throughout Ontario. The plant, measuring more than 5,000 square feet, fabricates a beautiful and extensive collection of window fashions. “So many products out there in the market right now come from China, which I don’t believe have the same quality as our products. It is important to manufacture and assemble our blinds and shades here in Canada,” Michael says. “In Windsor, people appreciate the mutually beneficial economics of supporting Canadian manufacturing. They prefer to buy Canadian rather than overseas imports. Our clients notice that our quality is better, our lifetime warranty is better and our after sales service is second to none.” As the manufacturer, Made to Shade has total control over each custom order. With no middleman adding retail markups, “our pricing is very fair,” says Michael. He personally takes care of Windsor-Essex clients. “With the extreme weather we’ve been experiencing, climate change is motivating a lot of people to request our insulating solutions. Made to Shade’s variety of thermal products are insulated to keep the cold out in winter and the heat out in summer.” The company’s Green 2000 products are manufactured with environmentally friendly technology and provide sunscreen protection indoors. Glare-reducing sunscreens and blackout shades are ideal for blocking sunlight in a media room or the bedroom of a shift worker. “Either can be mounted over a large window, patio door or wall of French doors to give continuous shade, shielding you and your furniture,” Michael notes. “You’ll be surprised by the pleasant difference the right shade can make in your comfort level.” Vision blinds deliver superb light control. The blind’s two layers of translucent and opaque horizontal striped fabric move separately and can be adjusted to allow partial or full privacy and light blocking. “Home automation and integration are in big demand. We are responding with motorization of our shades and blinds,” Michael says. “If you are building a new home, this is the ideal time to plan for

hardwiring your power supply for window treatments. Our mechanized blinds and shades are also available as battery-operated.” Wood slat Venetian blinds, traditional roller shades, pleated shades, top-down bottom-up cellular shades, silhouettes, Roman shades and every other option can be considered during Michael’s visit to your home or office. Shop with confidence, knowing you can buy custom, on trend window fashions at manufacturer direct prices. Your Made to Shade window treatment expert will assess your windows; determine light levels and privacy issues; hear your ideas; and offer free suggestions to shade windows of every shape and size. NEW DESIGN CENTRE FULL OF INSPIRATION AND SOLUTIONS BEAUTIFUL VINYL WINDOWS, operating smoothly. Stylish steel and fiberglass exterior doors swinging securely on solid wood frames with steel plates. Garden and patio doors opening to outdoor rooms shaded by retractable blinds neatly set between the glass panes for privacy. Storm doors featuring pet access or retractable screens which disappear when the windows are closed. Sentinel Windows and Doors Inc. has filled its new design centre with these and other actual-size working products that customers can see and test for themselves. Attractive vignettes of entranceways, patios and home exteriors reveal the looks today’s homeowners covet. It was a year ago that the Sentinel team moved their operation around the corner from their original location to build their new 4,700 square foot showroom at 1395 Tecumseh Rd. East, Windsor. “With us, customers always come first. So that meant work on our showroom was frequently set aside so we could take care of homeowners and builders,” says Angus Doan of Sentinel Windows and Doors. Supplying to new builds and renovation projects, “everything we sell is made in Canada, except our quality storm doors imported from the U.S.,” Angus says. “Our company is employee-owned and operated, which puts everyone in tune with our greatest priority: Making each customer happy.” Angus has personally been in the window business since the 1980s and has seen it all – both the challenges and advances in window technology. Now handling administration and scheduling, he started Sentinel Windows and Doors

with sales manager Mike Michaelis and installation manager and specialist Ken Deroy in 2016, bringing together over 70 years experience into their home improvement business. “Ken is one of the best installers in Windsor,” says Angus. “His brother, Kyle, is also a Sentinel installer, keeping up the family tradition. We install year-round, including in winter.” Sentinel provides flexible warranties that are transferrable when a property is resold. That is appreciated by home and business owners as well as people who are flipping or renting out homes. Guiding customers through Sentinel’s large selection, Angus says, “The right window does more than let the sunshine in. Perhaps the best choice for you will be 4 millimetre heavy glass that

is stronger and more sound-quieting than typical 3 millimetre glass. Should you opt for double glazed or go for triple glazed to increase your home’s energy efficiency and R-value? Sentinel’s new promotion on triple glazed windows might help you decide.” “Our well-crafted windows are supplied by Vinylguard Window & Door Systems Ltd.,” says Angus. “Sentinel is the exclusive carrier of Vinylguard in this area. We also have products by other high quality window manufacturers to meet our customers’ needs. Everything is top of the line, designed to last and affordably priced. We deal directly with our suppliers and do our own installations, which keeps ours prices down.” Window styles include casement, single or double hung, awning, single or double slider, shaped, bay and bow. “A bay window is one of the easiest and most affordable ways to add to your room, extending it up to 2 feet wider. It also creates that wow effect inside and outside,” Angus says. Steel exterior doors are made by Mastertech Door Systems in Ancaster. “The product is superior and the paint finish is exceptional, always perfect,” Angus notes. Retractable blinds can be built between the glass panels of a garden or patio door. “Last year, we launched our awning collection. We can install custom Rolltec awnings, available in all sizes and lots of colours to complement your home and outdoor rooms,” Angus says.

Made to order in Toronto, the awnings can be operated by hand-crank or an electric push button. An optional wind sensor closes the awning when the breeze turns strong. Once installation is complete on any Sentinel product, the team meticulously cleans the work area and shows the homeowners how to operate and maintain their new windows, doors and awnings. “From start to finish, we strive to give our customers an exceptional product and great experience,” Angus says. Just as their clients are proud to show their new windows and doors to their families and friends, the Sentinel team is looking forward to welcoming everyone to their open house from 9 am to 3 pm, Sat., Mar. 30. “Drop in and enjoy refreshments while learning about our home solutions. Manufacturers’ representatives will be here, talking about products,” says Angus. “We’re offering great money-saving promotions and deals during this special celebration.” Sentinel also makes convenient house calls six days a week, providing no cost, no strings attached assessments and quotes.

KIMBERLY HOMES WHEN IT COMES TO BUILDING A HOME, adding an addition or renovating a current space, you want a builder you can trust. For over 55 years, Kimberly Homes has been synonymous with quality craftsmanship, dependability and expertise. In 1964 Jim Ellis started a building company and named it after his first born, Kimberly. Fifty-five years later the family-owned business has developed over 1,000 acres of land, designed and built more than 2,000 homes. Kimberly Homes, with various partners, quickly became one of the largest developer/builders in Essex County. Jim fondly recalls the early days of the company. “In 1969 Forest Glade began to take shape. This it is where I remember being on job sites and sharing lunch with brick layers, framers and other workers. I couldn't believe the fantastic lunches the brick layers ate!” From Forest Glade to Tecumseh to Windsor and then LaSalle, Kimberly Homes grew quickly and became a trusted name in the community. In 1980, Kimberly Homes merged with Y & R Properties (Toronto) and continued to grow, developing and building in Kitchener, London and eventually Dallas and Corpus Christi, Texas. During the expansion, the company’s heart and soul remained in Windsor. Development continued with condos in Pilot's Cove, St. Clair Beach, Cranbrook Park Estates (the old Checker Flag) in Tecumseh, Southfield Developments in Tecumseh and Heritage Estates in LaSalle. As the company grew, Jim’s son Todd took the lead with his intuitive creative contributions. “From the very beginning, the designs were organic...Todd and my step mother, Bonnie, brought it to an entirely new level! They say that copying someone's work is the best form of flattery...well, we began seeing Kimberly models going up all over by other builders. That was okay because they didn’t have Kimberly Quality,” states Criss-Ann Ellis-Sandre. In 1991 Criss-Ann’s husband Bill Sandre started working for the company. Building since he was 17, he brought experience, technology and detail to the business. After 7 years with Kimberly Homes, Bill went back to school to earn his Bachelor of Architecture degree. During his sabbatical, Bill designed, developed and built over a billion dollars of residential, commercial, industrial and specialty education projects in Southwestern Ontario, but mostly throughout the U.S.

Above: Kimberly Homes founding members Todd Ellis (left) and Jim Ellis.

Bill and Criss-Ann returned home to Windsor in 2014. It was shortly before their return that Todd died to a rare lung disease. “A loss of family really makes you stop and take inventory,” says Criss-Ann. A few years later Jim asked Bill if he was interested in continuing the family business. Since January 2018 Bill has worked tirelessly to reestablish Kimberly Homes as a leader in renovations, additions and custom homes. As a design professional, Bill brings a unique lens to the building process. He is always thinking of how projects can be built more effectively and economically without compromising quality. “It’s rare that you’ll find someone with a Degree in Architecture still swinging a hammer and I admit that I am meticulous when it comes to details but our customers wouldn’t have it any other way. I am involved in every aspect of construction.” No project is too big or too small. Whether you are looking to renovate a bathroom or a large commercial space, Kimberly Homes can help. With numerous contractors and builders in the area, Bill says the best thing one can do is their research. “The best advice I can share is for people to find out the capabilities and dependability of the contractor you’re working with. At Kimberly Homes our customers become a part of the family. That is what has set us apart for 55 years.” For quality, integrity, honesty and family contact Kimberly Homes for your next construction project at 226-620-0554, or bsandre@kimberlyhomes.ca.

TAKING NEW YORK BY STORM

Elaine Paquette congratulates Lars with a special treat after his performance at the Westminister Kennel Club show in New York. Looking on is one of the judges.

Local Bouvier Wins Big At Westminister STORY BY DICK HILDEBRAND PHOTOGRAPHY BY CONGLETON PHOTOGRAPHY

AT HOME HE’S KNOWN AS LARS, or Baby Lars. On the road when he’s performing, his registered name is Quiche’s Major League. He’s a 105 pound, 5 year-old bouvier des Flandres (cow herder), who resides at the Quiche Kennels on County Road 46 in Maidstone…and he’s a big winner! In fact, his latest victory has earned him retirement, where his career focus will be as a stud dog, providing his owners feel the mate will be good for the breed.

Earlier this year, in his third appearance at the Westminister Kennel Club dog show at New York’s Madison Square Garden, Lars became the fourth bouvier to make the finale and then take first place in the herding competition. Lars’ competition included Elsa, the sheep dog that had been tops of any breed in the U.S. last year, along with Slick, the border collie that won the group in 2018 year at Westminister. ‘Best in Show’ was won by a wire fox terrier named King. Also in the hunt were a boxer, Sussex spaniel, dachshund, havanese and a schipperke. No bouvier has ever won ‘best in show’ in Westminister’s 112 year history. Because of his size, Lars went first, which really put the pressure on his owner/handler, Elaine Paquette who, along with her sister Louise, owns the Quiche Kennels. Both expressed shock when Lars ended up with the title. Bouviers have a unique history. They were developed in the 19th century as farm dogs in the northern hills of France and Belgium. Like the Swiss Bernese Mountain dogs, they were bred to pull milk

carts and also to herd cattle and act as police. Despite their innate strength as herders, the dogs generally have an even temperament. And Lars is no exception. The gentle giant loves attention and when he’s not showing off for the judges, he enjoys getting hugs from kids. “He loves to pick up cell phones and tv remotes,” says Elaine, “and when someone points at a camera at him…he runs to it. He loves having his picture taken.” The Paquette sisters have been involved in Quiche Kennels since their parents first opened the doors in the late 1970s. While their main business is boarding and grooming dogs, they also breed bouviers, something they’ve done since the early 70s. They have enjoyed a tremendous show success with their animals all across North America. In addition to the latest victory by Lars, the Paquettes can also take credit for having had the best herding dog in Canada for 12 consecutive years and the number one dog of all breeds in Canada two times…Zena and her son Demetrius, who was featured in Windsor Life a few years ago. They’ve also often been featured at the Detroit Kennel Club show and in 2014, their bouvier captured the ‘breeders’ stakes’ at the prestigious Eukanuba Show in Orlando Florida. Quiche has been showing bouviers for more than 30 years and have generally come away with a victory. “In fact,” says Elaine, “we’ve won more best of breeds at Westminister than any other breeder in North America!” She continues to get a big thrill in attending shows no matter where they are. “I’m very passionate about bouviers and never get tired of the competition. I’ve been very fortunate in meeting people from all over the world. One of my favorite events is the long-running Crufts Dog show in Birmingham England, which is, I think, even older than the New York Show. Both my sister and I have also been to Holland, Germany and Belgium. And, next year, Louise will be visiting Spain.” There’s very little money in the shows and competitors are required to foot their own expense bills. Fortunately the Paquettes have sold numerous dogs in Europe and on occasion have been able to stay with customers they have befriended. At the moment, a grey bouvier by the name of Phoenix, who is Lars’ nephew has been prepared for his first public appearance in Louisville Kentucky earlier this month and for the remainder of this year, he’ll be shown at least 2 or 3 times a month in both Canada and the United States. According to Elaine, “he’s just as good, and as nice, as Lars.” WLM

Renewed Clubhouse and New Chef Enhance Your Great Day Out WHETHER PLAYING 18 HOLES, relaxing over dinner or walking down the verdant green aisle to say, ‘I do,’ “our guests are blown away that they can enjoy a private course experience at our public Fox Glen Golf Club, open to everyone,” says Claudio Greco, clubhouse General Manager. Anyone who saw the McGregor complex 12 months ago will be impressed by the many changes. “We have completely renovated our clubhouse. Everything is fresh and new. This is a place you will be proud to bring your friends year-round,” Claudio says. The recent arrival of Executive Chef Adam Janisse has already attracted people who appreciate great food. The Windsor native creates seasonal menus based on fresh ingredients and flavours inspired by his world travels. Upper tier cuisine, affordably priced, is served daily to guests in the Fox’s Den, a modern, casual gastro pub and restaurant featuring a beautiful bar. “Each week, our Sunday brunches please everyone with terrific selection and reasonable prices for the entire family. Celebrate Mother’s Day and Easter Sunday by treating your loved ones to our festive brunch,” Claudio says. Staff and guests are eagerly anticipating the arrival of spring and the opening of the generous new patio. “We now have one of Essex County’s largest patios, with three tiers, a firepit and ambient lighting. There is also a pavilion, where talented musicians will be playing live this summer,” says Claudio. The patio and pavilion are available for private functions. Fox Glen specializes in large events, including weddings, showers, birthday parties, banquets, corporate outings and community gatherings. For private events, Fox Glen comfortably seats 25 people in the Copper Room or 50 to 200 people in the Grand Ballroom and Oak Terrace room. “We also have a dedicated bridal suite in which the bride and her party can prepare on the Big Day,” Claudio says. The quality of Fox Glen’s service is evident in the care the entire team takes in making each event memorable. Claudio assures, “Our experienced professionals will

collaborate with you on every detail beforehand and then carry out the plans so you can enjoy your own event.” Respecting the right of all couples to celebrate their commitment in marriage, Fox Glen has designed a selection of cost-effective wedding packages. Transparent fees include the ceremony, reception room and catering. “Be married indoors in the presence of up to 200 guests,” says Claudio. “Or arrive in a golf cart and tie the knot outdoors on the greens.” Photo opportunities are abundant on the club’s 155 acres of green space. Fun and healthy recreation will be teeing off any day now on Fox Glen’s golf course. The 18-hole, par 70 layout offers challenges at every turn, yet is designed so players of all skill levels can have a good day. Green fees are reasonable at Fox Glen Golf Club. A round of 18 holes is only $39. “Score significant savings with our discounted weekday golf memberships, only $1,000 to play Monday through Friday. This limited offer is presently open to anyone who was not a member in the 2017 or 2018 golf season,” says course owner Larry Sauve. “We invite you to host your golfing event here,” says Golf Pro Dennis Kelly. “Depend on our team to make your charity or corporate tournament a pleasant experience for everyone. In everything we do at Fox Glen Golf Club, we aim to please.”

Providing Complete Exterior Solutions for Homes PUTTING “EXPERT” IN THE NAME of his home improvement business is no exaggeration; it’s a matter of fact for Joe DiPonio. “I was 13 years old when I started in the window industry, helping my dad install windows on his customers’ homes and businesses. I learned my trade through him,” he recalls. After years as an installer, Joe went on to sales, service, aftercare, design and development and manufacturing. In 2007, he established Expert Windows & Doors to provide services to new homes under construction and older residences requiring renovations. Having personally logged 50 years on the job, Joe is still going strong and proud to have his own son, Mark, now working by his side as his business partner. Mark has spent the past 22 years working on the plant floor and in sales and management. Upon joining his family’s business last year, he also brought his expansive knowledge of additional exterior products, resulting in a change to the company name: Expert Windows Doors Roofing & Siding. The DiPonios’ hands-on, encompassing experience and expertise are invaluable as they and their team look after their clients today. “One of our strengths is we have done everything – and we know our products inside and out,” Joe says. Before deciding if a specific product is worthy of Expert customers, the DiPonios do their research. For the current collection, “we visited plants and checked manufacturing practices in order that we could confirm the supplier would meet our high standards,” Joe says. “The window and door industry is diversified by many smaller manufacturers in Canada. Although brand name recognition is always a concern, what matters most is quality construction, dependable performance, good value and delivering on the customer’s needs,” Joe believes. “Because we have been in the business for many years, we have access to excellent manufacturers. That gives our customers a wide range of options. We can steer you to a manufacturer who will cater to your needs and wants for a specific roofing profile, window finish or door style. Our knowledge of each product’s energy efficiency and performance helps you choose with confidence,” says Joe.

To many people, one door or window is as good as another. “The right door for your home depends on your specific application. If you live on the lake or on a farm, the exterior door is more exposed to the wind and other elements than a city home is,” Joe explains. “The correct window can make a hot room comfortable. A smart configuration can improve the home’s health by using cross breezes to naturally exchange fresh air.” Trained and certified as a Shingle Master, Mark is accredited in all products that Expert carries, including shingles, eavestroughs, facias and soffits. “With our experience as prior manufacturers and installers, we understand the limitations and advantages of each product – what works and what does not,” says Joe. There are various products with different options that are on display, by appointment, at Expert’s showroom in Windsor. Joe finds, “People prefer us to visit their homes or businesses, where we can see precisely how everything is situated. We really need a site visit to properly recommend products. Our hand samples help customers select the ideal styles and finishes.” Once those decisions are made, Expert gives the customer a free, no-obligation quote. “You deal directly with us, the owners,” Joe says. “We are pleased to come to your place anywhere in Windsor-Essex County, Chatham-Kent County or London.” Expert Windows Doors Roofing & Siding installs and services what it sells. “We’re responsible for all work on the project, taking care of our customer from A to Z,” Mark says. Carrying mid-range to top of the line products that will provide peace of mind for many years, “we will not sell products that are poorly designed and manufactured,” Joe assures. “In everything we offer, we provide the highest possible quality at the lowest possible price.” Everything is backed by lifetime guarantees, including on labour. Joe says, “Often, we extend the manufacturer’s own warranties and in most cases, make our guarantees the best in the industry.”

BEFORE

The family is rightly proud of their AAA rating as a Better Business Bureau accredited business. The DiPonios attribute their company’s growth and longevity to past customers who engage them for additional work on their homes and recommend Expert to their family and friends. “We make sure that above all else, our customer is happy. We want you to feel proud of the choices you made and glad that you entrusted us with your home,” Joe says. “That is why our company motto is our promise: We Do It Right!”

THE MONARCH BUTTERFLY Soft, Gentle, Beautiful STORY BY TERESA SILVESTRI

â–ź

THE MONARCH BUTTERFLY is one of the most iconic and wondrous insects native to North America. There was a time when residents of Windsor and Essex County enjoyed the beauty of butterflies, birds and bees, spending endless hours in the sunshine with nature. Over the years, without really being aware of it, or even questioning why, there was a gradual decline of the monarch butterfly along with many other species. Saving the Monarch has become a tri-national effort between Canada, United States and Mexico. While these governments are doing their part on a bigger scale, biologists and experts are suggesting that we can all help by simply creating more butterfly habitats on our own properties by planting milkweed and nectar rich flowers. Milkweed plants are the only source of food for the Monarch Caterpillar. These plants are rapidly disappearing due to the loss of habitat stemming from land development and the widespread spraying of pesticides on the fields where they live and grow.

Right: A female Monarch Butterfly feeds on the nectar of a Marsh Milkweed plant. Inset: The butterfly life cycle also known as Butterfly Metamorphosis includes four stages of life to grow into an adult. These four stages are: egg, larva, pupa and adult.

Each season, generally from March to September, the Monarch butterfly will go through four generations. The eggs laid in the spring of the new season will go through the egg, caterpillar, chrysalis stages to become a butterfly and each butterfly lives approximately six to eight weeks. We usually see the Monarchs in our area in early June and it takes three to four generations of Monarchs to be born before the species, as a whole, starts the new fall migration back to Central Mexico. Unlike the other generations, the fourth generation will live up to eight months until spring, at which time, the fourth generation Monarchs of the previous season will migrate from Mexico and come to lay eggs that produces the first generation of the new season. Providing food for the Monarch caterpillars and nectar flowers for the adult butterflies is the best way to help these delicate beautiful creatures survive. The three most popular perennial Milkweed species native to Ontario are Common Milkweed (Asclepias Syriaca), Butterfly Milkweed (Asclepias Tuberosa) and Swamp Milkweed (Asclepias Incarnata). These are excellent choices to plant in your garden or backyard. They grow very well in any type of soil and can be planted in pots or containers. A group of Windsor and Essex County residents whose goal is to provide information, knowledge and resources to our friends and neighbours would love to help bring the Monarch butterflies back in numerous numbers to our neighbourhoods. Some of us have planted milkweed in our yards, others have created butterfly gardens and actively raising the Monarch indoor, assuring they reach adulthood and then releasing them. We would like to offer an opportunity to all Windsor and surrounding neighbours and friends to participate in the survival of this beautiful Monarch! If you’re interested in planting Milkweed plants in your garden, contact us at any time and we would gladly provide FREE seeds or small milkweed plants (when available). With your help, we can have our children and grandchildren and future generations experience the beauty of the Monarch Butterfly. For further information, please contact: Leo Silvestri 519-977-3639 or email leo6@cogeco.ca or visit the facebook page: Monarch Butterfly Enthusiasts of Windsor and Essex County. WLM

KITCHEN RESCUE

Money-saving Cabinetry Upgrades And New Custom Closetry With her heart set on gaining an island by remodeling her kitchen, a local woman was momentarily disappointed when a renovation expert pointed out there wasn’t enough space in the room. She was all smiles, though, after he came up with an even better solution. “We could add a 6 foot long peninsula to her existing base cabinets and top it with a 33 inch deep counter. That would fit perfectly in the available space and provide additional storage, plus an eating bar with seating for 3 people,” says Jeff Rocheleau of Kitchen Rescue. “After we finished this recent project, the kitchen’s footprint was more efficient and the homeowner achieved everything she wanted and more.” “There are many cost-effective ways to upgrade a kitchen or bathroom, without tearing everything out,” Jeff says. “We help you look past your worn, tired rooms to see things differently.” Reusing cabinet boxes that are in good condition, “our skilled team applies laminate to all the cabinet exteriors and replaces all the doors, drawer fronts and moldings. We also install new hardware, sinks and countertops for a beautiful transformation,” Jeff explains. New features, such as an island or pantry, can be seamlessly blended with the updated cabinetry. “You save 40 to 60% compared to doing a total renovation and experience far less disruption while work is being done in your home. Your room can be remodeled in a matter of days instead of weeks. Reusing cabinetry also keeps good materials out of the landfill.” Redesign possibilities are posted on the company’s new website, kitchenrescue.com. Inspiration can also be discovered in the showroom at 3021 Walker Rd., Windsor. “Our displays help you visualize

the look you want. Borrow our samples to assist with your decisions,” Jeff invites. There is plenty of choice. Kitchen Rescue’s doors, for example, are available in a variety of styles made in thermofoil, five piece polyester that resembles wood and numerous species of real wood done in custom stains and finishes. “Introducing a new countertop refreshes the kitchen or bathroom,” Jeff says. Kitchen Rescue installs countertops fabricated from laminate, granite and quartz. The team can also incorporate a new undermount sink made of stainless steel or a composite that resembles black granite at half the price. “One thing everyone wants is greater organization in their homes,” Jeff notes. In the bathroom, new vanities and towers can add smart, convenient storage. Throughout the home, Kitchen Rescue’s new collection of closetry is designed to contain and display possessions and can be customized to meet any style or need. “We can help you tame the clutter and enjoy your belongings by creating a custom design to maximize your space and budget,” says Jeff. “We offer layouts, closet solutions and installation services for organizing your bedrooms, pantry, home office, hobby room and other spaces. “Do-it-yourselfers can take advantage of our helpful tips and save money with our cash and carry closetry.” Bringing style, function and organization to local homes, Kitchen Rescue offers complimentary, no obligation home visits to discuss ideas. Jeff personally looks after homeowners, working with their budgets and wish lists. The Kitchen Rescue team has helped more than 3,000 homeowners fall in love again with their condos, townhomes and houses throughout Windsor-Essex County. Jeff says, “Every project is as unique as our client.”

LOOK WHO’S

COOKING AT HOME DAVE CASSIDY

Equally adept at the bargaining table and kitchen table, Dave Cassidy, president of Unifor Local 444, is concerned about the wellbeing of local families, including his own. “I love to cook,” he says, “but with mine and my family’s busy schedules, it’s often hard to find time to cook elaborate meals throughout the week. I do, however, recognize the importance of homecooked meals and want to feed my family as many as possible. This is when my meal prepping comes in handy. I am able to pre-make either pre-portioned meals or different parts of a meal that can be put together on the go. Instead of scrambling for meal ideas last minute or just going out for fast food, we know that I have already made delicious food.”

Sweet Potatoes Ingredients: • 3-5 large sweet potatoes • Coconut oil spray (or other spray) • Himalayan pink rock salt • Pepper Preheat the oven to 400 F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Peel and cut sweet potatoes into 1” cubes. Lay them flat on the baking sheet. Completely coat potatoes with coconut oil spray. Season with your preferred seasonings; sometimes we substitute salt and pepper with cinnamon. Bake for 20 minutes. Flip the potatoes, then bake for an additional 15 minutes.

Vegetable Medley

Montreal Chicken Ingredients: • 6 boneless, skinless chicken breasts • Montreal steak spice • Himalayan pink rock salt • Pepper Use a fork to poke holes in chicken breasts on both sides to allow seasonings to penetrate. Season both sides with Montreal steak spice, salt and pepper; season generously to compensate for flavour lost during the cooking process. Place breasts in a pressure cooker, laying them as best you can in a single layer. Select the chicken option on the device and cook (we cook ours for 23 minutes).

Ingredients: • 2 smaller heads of broccoli • 2 smaller heads of cauliflower • 1 small bag of baby carrots • Coconut oil spray (or other spray) • Parmesan and herbs seasoning (or other seasoning) • Himalayan pink rock salt • Pepper Preheat oven to 350 F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Remove the cauliflower and broccoli from their attached stems. Spread all veggies in 1 even layer on the lined baking sheet. Spray with coconut oil spray, turning veggies over to ensure they are fully coated. Generously shake on seasonings, making sure to turn the veggies once again so they are fully coated. Bake until crisp on the outside, but not raw... approximately 25 minutes.

“Meal prepping has become a way for me to not only give my family hearty, healthy meals, but also gives us the ability to grab a meal and go.” – Dave Cassidy

Packaging Tips for Pre-made Meals After cooking, divide each food item into correct portion sizes and seal in food prep containers. A good ratio for 1 meal is a 6 oz. breast, 2/3 cup of sweet potatoes and 1 cup of vegetable medley.

Or, simply store each total food item in a larger container, so different meals can be created from pre-cooked ingredients by adding new ingredients during the week. Some of the meal variations my family enjoys are stir-fries or burgers/veggie burgers with sweet potatoes and veggies on the side. Y o u r

Mr. Insulation is committed to quality installation of every type of insulation to improve the energy efficiency of your home. Locally owned and operated by Fred Corp, with over 25 years in the insulation business, Mr. Insulation provides new home builds and older home upgrades. “Proper insulation is the best way to control your heating and cooling costs,” Fred points out. “It may seem obvious when the weather is cold and you notice drafts that can be sealed properly, but it is the air conditioning in the summer that is costing you even more money.” Insulation can settle after 20 years or you may have a basement or crawl space that you know is not insulated. Now is the perfect time to take advantage of a home insulation upgrade with rebates available through Union Gas if you are a customer. Spray foam insulation offers several benefits including: significant savings on energy costs, added strength to the building structure, does not require a vapour barrier, is permanent and will not sag, stops air and moisture infiltration, eliminates ice damming, improves air quality and keeps dust and pollen out. “Union Gas customers can qualify for a rebate of up to $5,000 towards improving the insulation of their home,” Fred advises. The Mr. Insulation free home consultation, can tell you if you are eligible for a grant and provide cost effective solutions to improving your home’s insulation capacity. Balancing your own needs with those who mean a lot to you can help you obtain satisfaction in what you are doing. A new way to handle your situation may be to get creative and focus on what is most important for you. What makes you happy should then bring a smile to others faces.

AUTHOR TAKES US FROM GRIEF TO HOPE AFTER THE LOSS OF A PET

STORY BY DICK HILDEBRAND / PHOTOGRAPHY BY HEIKE DELMORE

ANOTHER GEM FROM MELISSA LYONS. The award winning author, who lives in Windsor, has just released her second book ‘Until We Meet Again’ which, like her first effort, promises to be a successful venture. The mother of two daughters who are both “in school learning to save lives” came to Windsor 20 years ago. One of the girls is attending medical school in Ireland while the other is taking firefighting training at St. Clair College in Windsor. Melissa, whom you could describe as the ultimate entrepreneur, has had a varied career. She’s owned and sold several successful businesses and has worked in the banking and pharmaceutical industries. Several years ago, having difficulty in finding personal satisfaction, Melissa decided to take a ‘little’ time off to find her true calling. In 2017, after a 30 month hiatus, Melissa had written her first book titled ‘I Will Always Love You’. Designed to bring peace and hope to people who have suffered the loss of a loved one, the publication has met with an overwhelming response and is still readily available. As a sought-after speaker, Melissa truly cares about people. She is passionate about helping others embrace fresh perspectives when faced with a loss, tragedy, or other day-to-day situations. To find out more about her first book, log on to melissa-lyons.com. ‘Until We Meet Again. From grief to hope after losing a pet’ is written in very simple English. As Melissa says, “it’s not the number of words that count, but rather their Y o u r

meaning and their depth. What I’ve done is taken complicated and very painful experiences of grief and loss and answered them with messages of hope and love.” The narrative actually helps readers recall certain instances of loss in their lives, while the book’s messages provide solace and comfort. She says the first book dealt specifically with the loss of humans. The idea for the second came from people who had read ‘I Will Always Love you’ and from relating their own experiences of losing pets. “It’s a different process,” says Melissa, ”unlike the human experience, we usually don’t get to have a funeral with an animal, so there’s no closure for their humans and the pain remains without any support. I myself grew up on a farm and probably lost more animals than most people have ever owned.” Today the Lyons have two dogs and a cat. Even though Melissa’s latest book has been on shelves for a very short time, it’s already evoking positive responses. An American veterinarian, Judy Morgan, who was named the pet industry’s ‘Woman of the Year for 2018’ loved the book so much that she purchased the first 60 copies for use in her clinics as an aid to clients whose pets were euthanized. “The book is an amazing tool to help families,” says Melissa,” particularly where kids have lost their precious four-legged friend.” It’s her dream that anyone who is losing a pet, gets a copy of the book. In fact, she’s preparing a marketing plan and will be hiring people to contact veterinary services to help in book distribution. She’ll also be selling the books herself during various retreats and readings that she attends. From the first page to the 36th, ‘Until We Meet Again’ is chock full of heartfelt narrative and excellent illustrations. For example: “Wet kisses and snuggles, my nose on your face, P l a c e

we’ve shared many moments we’ll always embrace.” Anyone who has lost a pet, be it a dog, a cat, or a horse…or anything in between…will identify with the sentiment. There are positive messages of hope; “Look for rainbows and butterflies and clues that I’ll send. They will be your reminders that our bond will not end.” The author adds that rhyming verses will leave a more lasting, deeper impression on the reader. The illustrations, done in water colors, are the work of Canadian illustrator Patricia Henderson, whose exceptional art can be seen on windows and interiors of many major North American companies. She’s also been featured in Style and Chatelaine magazine and has collaborated with brands like Dior, Revlon, Swarovski and Burberry. Numerous private collectors own some of her work. Henderson, who lives in the Beaches area of Toronto, was chosen by Melissa who was hoping to find a local artist. Through family and friends and a series of welcome coincidences, the pair was connected. During the project, the two exchanged many phone calls and messages, but did not meet until the pictures were completely finished. The drawings featuring kids of various ethnicities, are done in a positive manner. You’ll notice lots of water, blue sky and various creatures. The children are all involved in various activities…accentuating Melissa’s philosophy of Hope, Love and Gratitude. ‘Until We Meet Again’ sells for $24.99 and can be bought at Chapters, Indigo and various gift shops throughout Windsor and Essex. And it’s available online at Amazon. Today, Melissa is working on her third book, ‘The Power of Pressing Pause’. She’s also planning a series of retreats that’ll be centered around the teachings in the book. And, as her first two books, there will again be common sense approaches to putting one’s life in order during crisis situations. As part of her busy schedule, Melissa spends a lot of time away from home attending book readings and school visitations helping students create their own stories through her evolving program called “Create a Creator.” ‘Until We Meet Again’ is basically a children’s book, but that shouldn’t stop adults from picking it up and giving it a read. The thought-provoking messages and the beautiful pictures, written from the animal’s perspective, will certainly help to make anyone’s day. “Allow your mind time to unwind and be free. Be as kind to yourself as you were to me.” WLM

VICTORY LINCOLN New Navigator and Aviator Forge New Pathways in Luxury and Performance “THIS IS THE BEST full-sized SUV that I’ve ever driven.” Consistently, “that is what our clients are telling us after they take possession of their new 2019 Lincoln Navigator,” says Jeff Ameel, sales manager at Victory Lincoln in Chatham. The Navigator is one of six luxury vehicles in Lincoln’s current fleet, each designed to deliver the superior driving experience that the auto manufacturer believes its clients deserve. Strong and beautiful, the Navigator loves its new owners back. With the Lincoln Embrace features, the SUV senses when the driver approaches and illuminates the way. The Perfect Position seat with Active Motion cradles and supports, while providing optional heat, cooling and massage. While loaded with first-class touches, the spacious Navigator is a true sports utility vehicle, ready to take on harsh driving situations. The adaptive suspension controls the up and down movement of the wheels driving over rough spots, ensuring uncompromising comfort.

2019 Lincoln Aviator

“Enjoy the ride your way: easily switch between the Navigator’s six selectable drive modes, ranging from Conserve to Excite, to suit travel conditions and your mood,” Jeff says. Looking down the road, Victory Lincoln is eager for the arrival of the 2020 Lincoln Aviator. “This vehicle is lifting luxury to new heights. Everyone in your family can ride in style and comfort,” Jeff says. Although the first Aviator will be landing at Victory Lincoln this spring, “we have already taken orders from people who are as eager as we are.” Carrying 7 passengers securely on 3 rows of comfortable seats, “the Aviator combines appealing features of a midsize family sedan and the Navigator SUV,” Jeff finds. “Lincoln has never had anything like this before and it’s great to see.” Traveling in the Aviator feels like gliding. The air ride suspension is speed-sensitive, rising at lower speeds to see the road and lowering the body at high speeds for greater aerodynamics. Cool tech is on board the Aviator, equipped with the Lincoln Connect embedded modem to enable 10 devices to access Wi-Fi simultaneously. “The Lincoln Way app lets you program your smartphone to act as the key,” says Jeff. speed limits; help brake the vehicle if the driver doesn’t notice an obstacle; and activates a 360-degree camera presenting a wide view when reversing. Jeff notes, “Lincoln wants you and your family to arrive safely home.” Another fast and nimble choice for busy people is the Lincoln Nautilus. The SUV crossover has the power and dependability to keep up with families on the go. Distinctly a Lincoln, the Nautilus stands out from the crowd. For the young executive in the market for a luxury vehicle that does double-duty on weekend adventures, “the Lincoln MKC is a great compact crossover SUV,” Jeff says. The 245-horsepower 2.0L turbocharged engine is intelligently engineered with direct injection and independent variable camshaft timing. MKC’s powertrain is strong enough to tow 3,000 pounds when properly equipped. An example of the MKC’s IQ is the Advancetrac with Roll Stability Control. The system utilizes gyroscopic sensors to monitor roll rate and vehicle roll motion 100 times or more per second to determine when and how it will safely apply the brakes – critical for snow, rain, gravel and other challenging driving conditions. “Each Lincoln model is packed with special, innovative features that will increase your driving pleasure,” Jeff says. “Our Victory Lincoln team invites you to test drive one or all of our new models to discover your perfect match.” The new fleet is on view in Victory Lincoln’s large showroom. “Brandon Leonard, our Victory Lincoln brand specialist, is happy to discuss the vehicles with you in our showroom or bring vehicles to your home or place of business for a test drive,” says Jeff. Such considerate, personal service is indicative of the treatment clients can expect at Victory Lincoln. Jeff explains, “When a vehicle requires maintenance or repair, we pick up your Lincoln and leave a loaner for your convenience. We’re the only dealership that does that for every Lincoln serviced, no matter how old your vehicle is or whether you bought it from us. If you have any questions about your new or older Lincoln, we encourage you to contact us.” The Lincoln corporation also looks after its vehicle owners. The newest version of its complimentary Lincoln Way app uses the driver’s smartphone or tablet to connect with Lincoln’s personal concierge team, on hand to help with vehicle solutions and roadside assistance. “The app is useful for locating and paying for parking, finding your vehicle in a crowded parking lot or checking if you locked your vehicle – even if you are out of the country. Use Lincoln Way to book service pickup and return or to schedule vehicle starts so when you enter the cabin, the temperature is perfect,” says Jeff. Catering to discerning people who appreciate luxury and superb engineering, the Victory Lincoln team ensures their customer care is VIP level. Jeff believes, “If you are about to become a Lincoln owner for the first time, you will soon realize why Lincoln has such a long and solid brand following. There really is nothing like a Lincoln.”

“TRUCKS ARE THE FINAL bastion of American dominance in the world automotive industry.” With those words, PBS auto guru and host of Autoline, John McElroy gave his view of the current state of the industry and its impact on the North American International Auto Show. Just one lap around the displays at the Cobo Hall event was enough to illustrate the impact of trucks and SUVs in today’s society. Oh sure, cars were still on display, but it was the trucks that stole the show pointing spectators in the direction that the industry is taking. Remember the days of the station wagons? Back in the fifties and sixties, these were, in many cases, the family haulers, transporting the kids to various sporting events and bringing home the groceries or whatever cargo needed to be moved. Then came the mini-vans and the SUVs which now find themselves in many garages. Their smooth lines and functional interiors

make them the ideal vehicle for today’s lifestyle. And with declining gasoline prices, particularly in the U.S., more and more of them are leaving dealers’ showrooms. Just take a look around the parking lots at your favorite supermarket or mall…rows upon rows of SUVs and pickup trucks, interspersed with the occasional car. Even Ford’s newest police interceptor is based on the redesigned Explorer ST, which in its hybrid configuration (electric and gas) provides for a cruising range of 500 miles (roughly 800 kilometers). Mind boggling performance and enormous annual fuel savings, make it the ideal replacement for the now defunct Crown Victorias which served law enforcement for so many years. Its userfriendly interior is ideal for transporting prisoners, or police dogs with enough room left over for cargo which is easy to load. The trend toward the sport utility vehicles is a global phenomenon. GAC, a Chinesebased company, debuted its line of vehicles in Detroit…all of them SUVs — not a car in sight. At the same time, most luxury manufacturers including Audi, Mercedes, BMW, Jaguar, Audi, Porsche, Land Rover and even Bentley have rolled out their versions, with more likely on the way. Unfortunately, none of these companies, along with Volvo and Mazda attended this year’s auto show, which added to a more somber tone to recent shows which were buoyed by a resurgence in the North American auto industry. Nonetheless attendees did have the opportunity of checking out more than 700 vehicles which trended toward SUVs. Judging by the media crowd, one of the more popular rides was the Infiniti QX50. A product of Nissan’s luxury brand, the vehicle seems to have just the right amount of space and luxury to satisfy the most discriminating buyer. Inside, passengers will find lots of leather, trimmed with suede and other amenities. Seating is comfortable and visibility, as in most Sport Utes, is excellent. The Infiniti display at the auto show was mainly SUVs in various sizes and various price ranges. Nearby, at the Subaru display, the Japanese manufacturer showed off its cars and the 3 SUV models that are become noted for their for their safety and reliability — the Outback, the Forester and the new Ascent. Three different sizes and three different price ranges, all designed for the family. Elsewhere, Lexus, Toyota’s luxury brand has five SUVs in different sizes and price ranges. The LX stands at the top of the heap with a price tag of around $90,000 U.S.

with just about every goodie that an owner could hope for. Toyota’s RAV4, one of the most popular SUVs, has undergone a major overhaul, albeit at a higher price tag. It’s a solid performer and a good indicator of the popularity of these vehicles. Another top performer is the Stelvio from Alfa Romeo, the Italian builder most famously known for its race cars and other sport vehicles. This 505 HP SUV is luxury from stem to stern and will top out at 177 miles an hour. You can own it for $80,000 in the states...slightly higher in Canada. A typical Alfa, the cabin is designed for driver and passenger comfort. From the outside, it looks good no matter at what angle you’re looking. Honda has a wide selection of SUVs in various price ranges. The CRV is popularly priced, while the Pilot is somewhat bigger and a little more expensive. From the company’s premium brand, Acura, comes the MDX with a little more luxury and a higher price tag. From Korea, Hyundai unveiled its newest vehicle, the Palisade…a brand new SUV with a reasonable price tag. Incidentally, the builder’s Kona was named North American Utility of the year, while the affordable Genesis G70, another Hyundai winner, is the North American Car of the Year. The Jeep Wrangler got North American SUV of the Year honors. Over the years, Jeep has become known for its extensive lineup of SUVs, with the popular Grand Cherokee on the top rung of the ladder. GM, which is dramatically reducing its car line and heading toward the manufacture of all-electric vehicles, has a wide selection of SUVs in many sizes and price ranges. Top of the line is the GMC Yukon in Denali trim. On the Chevy side, it’s the Tahoe, also sitting atop an array of trucks to satisfy the most discerning of owners. The Corvette, arguably one of the best sports car deals on the planet, the latest version of the Camaro and the Malibu continued to get the oohs and aahs from auto show visitors. It was much the same story at Ford, where the blue oval unveiled the new Explorer ST powered by a 3 litre, 400 Horsepower Eco-boost V-6, making it the most powerful Explorer ever built with performance matching the venerable Range Rover sport. It’s easy to see why it was used as the basis for the new Police vehicle. Ford is also home to the Expedition, a feature loaded high-end SUV which has been attracting buyers for a number of years. On the premium scale, it’s the Lincoln Navigator, basically an Expedition on steroids. It found favor with the

automotive press last year and was named North American Truck of the Year. However, lest we forget — Ford is still the architect of the Mustang and this year’s auto show was the perfect venue for introducing the new Shelby GT500, described as the fastest production Mustang ever built. With its new, tough-looking grille sporting the signature cobra and designed by the same team that came up with the LeMans winning Ford GT, this pony churns out more than 700 horsepower! It’ll rocket from 0-60 mph in slightly more than 3 seconds and cover the quarter mile in under 11 seconds …bringing its numbers close to those of Ford’s NASCAR racers. As company chairman Bill Ford has said, the company is at the forefront of changing transportation and is expecting to revamp or change 75% of its current lineup over the next 24 months. Coming soon is the much awaited Bronco, a redesigned Escape and a Mustang-inspired electric vehicle. Fiat-Chrysler, in the meantime, continues to chip away at the sales lead of Ford’s F150 pickup. With the RAM 1500 truck winning both the Motor Trend and North American Truck of the Year awards, the brand is picking up consumer steam. Brand new heavy-duty 2500 and 3500 trucks were rolled out this year. With a 6.7 litre Cummins diesel under the hood, these monsters are capable of producing 1000 foot pounds of torque making them the most powerful heavy duty trucks on the market. Ride and handling have been dramatically improved and 35 new safety and other features have been added. Since the Ram brand was introduced in 2009, sales have risen from 263,000 units to 720,000 last year. The company’s market share is slightly more than 22% and is said to be the fastest growing full-sized truck brand in North America. Adding to the Ram truck fleet is the reintroduction of the Power Wagon, which was a Dodge truck staple of the 1970s. With its 4-wheel drive, great handling and chassis protection, the truck brings to dealerships, 70 years of off-roading experience. Yes, the transportation market is changing ...quicker it seems as each year goes by. Even the North American International Auto Show, which just celebrated its 30th anniversary is changing. It was a bittersweet moment as we said goodbye to the annual January event and got set to welcome the new Auto Show, in June of 2020. But, will the sun and warmth breathe new life into this terrific event? Only time will tell. WLM
