Retirement planning: Where does family fit? When many Canadians think about retirement planning, we often don’t think about how retirement impacts more than just ourselves. Families today have widened in definition – more than half of Canadians consider family “anyone they love and care for, whether they are related by blood, marriage or adoption.” *According to Statistics Canada, over two million Canadians live in a multigenerational home, which often includes the oldest generation. Nearly two-thirds of retirees (63%) say they are willing to offer financial support to their family, even if it could jeopardize their own financial future.* However, it’s important to work with your financial advisor to anticipate how commitments may impact your life and finances. Here are some common situations you that you may want to consider in your retirement planning conversations. Supporting adult children — Seventeen percent of all parents with adult children, around 1.8 million Canadians, have provided financial support to adult children since the beginning the COVID-19 pandemic.* Supporting your children into adulthood could have serious impacts on your retirement strategy and needs to be included as part of your plan. Contributing to grandchildren’s education — Spending time with grandchildren in retirement is a common goal. But if you’re looking to contribute to their education savings or to a particular activity for them, it could have an impact on your retirement strategy. Talk to your financial advisor about when and how to balance an education savings strategy with your retirement strategy. Caring for elderly parents — Canadians with living parents say they worry about their parents and talk with them more often; seventeen percent of those living in retirement said they are relying more on their adult children since the pandemic started. Supporting a parent (or two) into their later years could come at a considerable cost, especially if they are living in a long-term care facility. If supporting a parent is important to you, talk to your advisor about how to best plan for this. Aligning with your partner — You and your partner have travelled a long way together and probably plan on spending time together for many years to come. Depending on how each of you envision retirement, determine a strategy to meet your combined goals. Your advisor can help determine what it may cost to reach your goals, and how to best help to get you set up to fund them. * Source: Edward Jones/Age Wave Four Pillars of the New Retirement study

Spring Style Guide GLASS EVOLUTION While we celebrate their wood construction for every room of the house, Handstone continues to elevate their product line to include new custom products to fill gaps within the marketplace. The Electra collection brings their Sunrise Metal program full circle with Glass occasional tables and a coordinating accent chair. The program allows for the metal product to be showcased in silver, gold, black, champagne and pewter. Each one gives the line a distinctly different flair.

DYNAMIC AND DURABLE With active lifestyles, we continue to search for dining surfaces that are durable and meet a variety of different needs within the household. The dining table is not just a gathering space for dinner but often acts as a home office, home schooling or a family game night. Bermex has developed a new collection of Ceramic topped dining tables. Available in round, rectangular and oval, there are a variety of different base styles and stains to customize to your space. The 2 colours of the ceramic top include grey as photographed and a white with hints of brown in the veining. Ceramic tops have the same properties as any other ceramic. They offer great hardness, strength and high durability. A glass finish was added on the bottom of the ceramic for sturdiness. The hardness is what makes it scratch resistant and durable. Sintered stone used in construction is also non porous so it is not easily stained since foreign liquids cannot penetrate the material to discolour it. High function meets high style with this practical and fun series.

LOVING LEATHER The frame may not be new but it continues to be a top trend high. What is important to know is that now, by popular request, it now comes in leather. With your choice of fabric or leather colour, combined with chrome or brass metal accent this frame is not only eye catching but sits like a dream. It is perfect for open concept spaces as they are beautiful from every angle. Slated for Spring arrival, EHF will feature this beauty in luscious white leather with brass metal accent.

STELLAR STYLE Take a Trip back in time with this Split back Show wood sofa. With sleek metal accents this frame is sure to please the toughest style critics. Décor Rest doubles down on this frame showcasing it with a bold pop of colour. This spring EHF welcomes this frame to the floor in striking blue leather. The seating provides both comfort and support and the low track arm is perfect if you prefer to lay down and stretch out. THE “LOUNGE” Its name says it all; the Stylus “Lounge” is truly the best place in your home to relax in comfort. With a 50” depth and 50” width, each seat gives plenty of room to stretch out or cuddle up with that special someone. The low profile, loose back pillow design is perfect for rooms with a view allowing clear sightlines across the space. It comes standard with feathersoft seating but can be firmed up with optional ultracell foam to give you your desired comfort.

IN THE BUSINESS OF BEDROOMS JLM continues to add collections and finishes to their Juvenile and adult bedroom collections. Proudly made in Canada, they make a quality product built with Birch solids and veneers. Many beds offer wood or upholstered headboards, some with Led lights and others with underbed storage. Check out JLM for the first time it may not be your last.

How to get your child interested in taking over your business Handing over the reins of your business to an adult child is anything but simple. Emotions can get the best of us, creating obstacles in the transition process. Here are 5 tips to keep in mind to ensure your child is interested and able to successfully take over your business. 1. Communicate Take the time to sit down with your potential successor and discuss your goals, emotions and expectations so you understand each other better. 2. Don’t take anything for granted Don’t assume that your child is ready — or not ready — to take over. Give them the opportunity to demonstrate where they stand regarding the transition of the family business. 3. Give yourself time. Don’t rush things. Just because you’ve started discussing the transition doesn’t mean you have to finalize all your plans in a few weeks’ time. Go step by step and invest time in transferring knowledge and skills. A key challenge will be establishing a realistic timeline with clearly defined milestones. 4. Manage expectations Different generations bring different points of view to the table. Be receptive to new ideas and give your child the autonomy to prove themselves. 5. Transfer knowledge and authority Share what you know while allowing your child to acquire their own knowledge, at their own pace. The hardest thing to transfer is authority over the business. Be prepared to hand over the keys one day!

We invite you to join us for a Webinar ‘’What You Need to Know When You Are Transitioning’’ Date: April 21, 2022 Time: 6 PM Contact us at promotionontario@desjardins.com to get the link.

It looks like we finally made it out of whatever the last two years were. As a bonus, as I write this, it is beginning to feel like Spring—a time of year when the world seems to come back to life. Also, a time when we come out of our semi-hibernation and begin to think about brightening our surroundings. In this edition of Windsor Life Magazine, we feature several local companies that are professionals at making our homes that much nicer. It is their opportunity to showcase their work and make your choices a little easier. We also bring you the first look at travel outside our region that we have not shown in quite some time. The world is opening up and, if we can, we should take as much advantage of that as possible. Perhaps, book a home renovation project and then vacation while the job is being performed. Hey, I can dream, can’t I? Locally, things are getting back to life. The Windsor Express are playing basketball again and entertainment venues are opening. Local rock duo, The Blue Stones, share their story of breaking into mainstream music as they embark on a world tour. Enjoy the roasted red pepper and tomato bisque recipe shared by Jason and Brooke Watorek in our Look Who’s Cooking At Home feature. You will find multiple stories of inspiration as you read through these pages. When hope seemed lost, Jarrett Pike gifted his kidney to lifelong friend Kyle Damphouse, providing a second chance at life. Oregon State Forward, Maurice Calloo, sets out to motivate young local athletes to follow their dreams. I hope you enjoy this edition. And now, get out and dance. Relish in your freedom. It has been too long since we were able to. On the other hand, please be patient. Always keep in mind that the rest of the community is also just coming alive again. It may take a little longer to be served at your favourite restaurant. Retailers may be having trouble supplying the demands of all of us. It is not something they can control, and we must accept that. Be friendly. Let your happiness show. You will find that the happier you are the nicer the world seems to be. On that note I will leave you until next time as the sunshine outside is calling me! Happy reading.

LESS IS MORE A Masterpiece in Minimalism STORY BY KAREN TINSLEY PHOTOGRAPHY BY JESSE DUROCHER

IT’S BEEN SAID that minimalism is about living simply, meaningfully and intentionally—in clean, uncluttered spaces. This stunning new Windsor home ticks all the boxes. Known as the “father of minimalism”, German architect Mies van der Rohe’s style is regarded as one of the most sought-after design genres. Mies coined the famous term “less is more” which could be considered the minimalist motto. Most of us are familiar with the concept. Characterized by monochromatic palettes using colour as an accent, minimalism usually combines an open floor plan, lots of light and functional furniture. Another “minimalist motto” could be “function over form”. Flat, smooth surfaces and strong, clean lines create bold statements that emphasize the essential nature of each item. You won’t find highly patterned furnishings and accessories or highly detailed ornamentation. Instead, the focus is on purity and simplicity. While you might be surprised to learn that today’s typical home contains 300,000 (or more) items, you likely wouldn’t be too surprised that

the average person spends 12 days each and every year searching for stuff they can’t find! The fact that people are gravitating to more uncluttered, uplifting home environments is also not surprising, considering the chaos and uncertainty of the past few years. Once a Windsor professional couple was ready to embark on building the minimalist home of their dreams, they engaged local design firm Urban Home to guide and advise them. Upgrading from their existing smaller home, this couple’s dream also entailed acquiring brand new furniture, fixtures, appliances, artwork and accessories for the new build. Urban Home proprietor Jodi Mason says, “We were mindful of balancing three things: quality, aesthetics and price points.” Clockwise from below: Brass pendant lights and barstools marry form and function; driftwood table, animal skin rug bring nature indoors; Jodi Mason of Urban Home adjusts the individually mounted pendant artwork; bold art canvases infuse warmth.

No mean feat since the pandemic has dramatically affected the interior design supply chain. Rollercoaster. Broken. Moving Target. These are the words a recent panel of manufacturers used to describe the havoc the pandemic continues to wreak in the industry. And while breaking the news to a client that they can’t get a sofa for six months (or more) is not a fun conversation for anyone, that’s only part of the problem. The issue is multi-faceted and includes raw materials, logistics, and labour shortages. Furniture, paint, flooring, appliance and décor prices have risen dramatically. The days of huge selection and varying price points appear to be over—at least for the foreseeable future. Delivery lead times can be extremely frustrating. Delays and shortages are now the rule rather than the exception. For many people, building, renovating or redecorating has created a perfect storm for compromising or “settling”. Mason says, “Our client believed in and trusted the process. Their patience never wavered; they were willing to wait for the perfect pieces.” One example: the pink cockatiel wall art above the sleek, curvy white plush loveseat topped with a soft, shaggy champagne pink pillow. Instantly recognizable for their crisp, clean, clutter-free monochromatic look, minimalist spaces can sometimes lack soul. Where some might see “severe”, minimalists see “sleek”. Where some might think “boring”, minimalists are thinking “bold”. The homeowners infused their new sanctuary with life by incorporating a wide array of textiles and textures. Velvet remains a popular furniture fabric choice—not only is it luxurious but it’s also aesthetically pleasing and comes in a rainbow of bold and neutral colours. In this home, forest green velvet dining chairs add a splash of uniqueness—one part modern, one part cozy. Just one example of warming up the room while staying true to minimalist style principles. This home’s all white colour palette (a mainstay of modern minimalism) invigorates its spaces with possibility. Like a deep breath of fresh air, white brings sunbleached Mediterranean fishing villages and wedding dresses to mind. It holds promise and evokes feelings of new beginnings. It’s the height of sophistication in interior design, and it never goes out of style. But to keep it from feeling too stark and clinical,

the homeowners chose bold art pieces and let them dominate. Art can transform even the plainest of rooms into fascinating expressions of individual style and personality—like the pair of rose-hued abstract canvases creating vibrant visual interest in the living room. Accessories offer delightful opportunities to give rooms a “surprise”. The exquisite geometric glass and brass pendant fixtures over the kitchen island combine form and function—another minimalism hallmark. Powerful tactile statement pieces—like the driftwood coffee table and animal skin rug—add contrast, pops of whimsy and nature-inspired elements. The surround of the modern fireplace was kept streamlined. The brilliant sculptural wall treatment over the L-shaped sofa is luxe and elegant. The dynamic “hello” wall graphic above a warm chocolate brown sofa anchors the space, creating a friendly ambience. Impressionist-inspired accent cushions add contrast while keeping things fun and fresh. The pandemic has changed life in so many ways, but especially how we live in our homes. Our homes have not only evolved into workplaces, but exercise studios and classrooms. As a result, the interior décor industry has had to adapt in creative ways. In 2018, most homeowners, real estate agents and interior designers would have agreed that “open concept” design was here to stay. And while open floor plans haven’t completely fallen off the radar, they’re no longer as popular. People still want big kitchens that open onto dining rooms or family rooms—but home offices, outdoor living spaces and “Zoom rooms” are now the big wish list items. And while some people have returned to their regular workplaces —at least part of the time—many of us continue to work from home. This “hybrid” may well be “the new normal”. This masterpiece of minimalism promotes peace, wellbeing, comfort and refuge. And it’s most definitely where the homeowners’ hearts are! WLM Windsor Life Magazine is always searching for interesting homes, landscaping, gardens, patios and water features to show our readers what others in the community are doing with their living spaces. Adversity Breeds Innovation Windsor Chrysler Took The Bull By The Horns During Covid-19 THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC has shaken Windsor-Essex to the core over the course of two years. But with adversity comes a chance for improvement, to meet challenges head on and change for the better. This is exactly what happened with the team of Windsor Chrysler, who recently celebrated 25 years of business in the region. “We’ve adapted to the necessary changes through this pandemic,” says Ken Tape, general manager of Windsor Chrysler. “It created new opportunities and new ways of doing business.” Like nearly every other business, when the first lock down started there were a lot of things up in the air without much direction. For Tape there were two directions he saw any business could have headed down. “You could go into it thinking ‘the sky is falling,” says Tape with a sigh before his eyes gleam with confidence. “Or you go into it realizing we’re going to have challenges but we’re going to get through it, take every opportunity, improve and get through it.” The lock down and border closing even lead to some interesting opportunities. When the Jeep Grand Cherokee L was being ready to be unveiled Stellantis could not get their people to the US to film the training video. They called up Windsor Chrysler’s team and asked to use the showroom as their studio. Tape’s team jumped at the opportunity, even if it lead to some interesting changes in how they ran the business. “You had to be really quiet because they were filming,” Tape says. “Then they would take a break and you’d rush around to do your business. It was actually a fun time and the customers got a kick out of it.” The team had a lot of practice as well. While many businesses were gearing down, car dealerships actually saw an almost catastrophic rise in sales, far outstripping supply. “We saw the lowest stock volume ever last year, at one point we were actually down to 14 cars on the lot,” Tape says, “I could have turned the place into a drive-in theatre.” While part of the problem was a limit to the number of cars the dealership was getting in, the other was simpler, Windsor

Chrysler sells a lot of cars. In fact, they are currently number one when it comes to new car sales across all the dealerships in Southwestern Ontario. The lock downs especially bred innovation in the way the team at Windsor Chrysler did business. When stores were not allowing customers to come in to shop the team quickly worked to implement curbside pickup for online shopping, something Tape says will remain. “I’m confident that no matter what comes down the line, if our team can handle the last two years, our team can handle anything thrown at them and take great care of their customers,” Tape says with a proud smile. There is still a lot more for the team at Windsor Chrysler to be proud of. They have worked directly with the factory and, because of this, they are the dealer with the largest new car inventory of Chrysler vehicles in the area. While most other lots are only a quarter or half full nearly every spot is filled at Windsor Chrysler. If you are looking for new vehicle and want the best service in Windsor-Essex, head to Windsor Chrysler at 10380 Tecumseh Road East in Forest Glade or visit windsorchrysler.com.

ESSEX APPLIANCE CENTRE LTD.

Sales. Service. Delivery. FOR THE LAST 35 YEARS, Windsor-Essex has been able to count on Essex Appliance for all its kitchen appliance needs. Chris Stevens, the son of owners Gord and Cathy Stevens, recalls the beginnings of their business. “My dad started this by himself,” Chris says. “He only had about ten fridges and ten stoves. It was a one-man show for the first few years, he did sales during the day, and deliveries in the evening.” Eventually, the family-run business grew into what it is today: a well-renowned appliance business, with a focus on its customers and their specific needs. “Our core value at Essex Appliance is that we try to take care of everyone no matter their budget. Every customer is important to us,” says Chris. “We don’t like hearing that a customer had tried another appliance store and wasn’t shown the level of attention that they needed. We’re happy to spend as much time with you as you need to make the right purchase.” A top priority for Chris and the whole Essex Appliance team is to ensure that the customer leaves their store with the right appliance for their needs. “Before we make a sale, we make sure that the customer is informed of every feature, how everything works and making sure that it’s exactly what they’re looking for,” Chris notes that the average time customers usually spend in-store is around one hour. “When we have new customers come in looking for appliances for their new home, they tend to be really shocked at the amount of variety we have.” Essex Appliance also prides itself on its specials and its commitment to providing value to its customers. “There’s always some kind of sale going on, but they are always changing,” notes Chris. “It doesn’t matter if you’re shopping for one or multiple items, our sales staff are trained to take the time to double-check all current promotions in order to get you the lowest price possible.” Remember to visit their website at essexappliance.com for updates. One concern that’s common among customers is the impact the current supply chain crisis has had on Essex Appliance. “Like the car industry, the appliance Inside the oven cavity, steady heat weaves around each flat tine. From searing select cuts and simmering sauces to succulent roasts, these ranges offer unmistakable firepower.

Precise, dual flames produced by precision-drilled brass burners.

industry was really hit hard,” says Chris. “So, we’ve done everything we can to ensure that we have the best variety possible in our warehouse, to get our customers something quickly in emergency situations.” If you are looking to shop for new appliances soon, Chris suggests placing your orders as soon as possible. “We’re definitely in a better place than we were in 2020, but the sooner customers place their order, the better chance of us having it all here in time for their move-in date.” Fortunately, Essex Appliance makes it as easy as possible for customers to do just that. All the store’s available appliances can be found on their website, as well as links to the brands they carry. Chris elaborates on this. “Online shopping is convenient, but we are always encouraging our customers to come into the store for the best shopping experience,” Chris adds “People like to see the quality of the product before buying, so for our in-store shoppers we keep our 10,000 square foot showroom filled with product to browse from.” Pair that with their knowledgeable sales team and it makes shopping for the perfect appliance a breeze. If you’re looking for a premium level appliance, or just need a replacement on something small, Essex Appliance has something for everyone. This family-owned business not only offers a wide variety of products, but also prides itself on providing the best customer service possible. Visit essexappliance.com for more information on all your appliance needs or get in touch at 519-776-6316.

BRIGHT DAYS AHEAD

Scott’s Fireplace Partners To Bring A New Natural Lighting Alternative HAVING SERVED Windsor-Essex for over 25 years, the team at Scott’s Fireplace has branched out into a new medium, bringing another form of natural light into your home. Scott’s Fireplace co-owners, AJ Godwin and Emile Anhorn, are proud to announce their position as Solatube’s premier dealer for the region. Solatube has been operating out of Vista, California since the early 90’s. While they produce a plethora of products, Scott’s Fireplace is stocking Solatube’s premier residential natural lighting fixtures. These fixtures are made out of a highly reflective tube, reflecting 99.7% of light, and a device on top which captures and redirects sunlight throughout the day. This system pipes sunlight down to brighten your home, even rooms with no access to windows. The Solatube is an environmentally conscious lighting option that requires no hydro or replaceable components such as batteries or lightbulbs. Why did Solatube decide to partner up with a fireplace dealership? The answer is a lot simpler than you may think. “Fireplace dealerships are about changing the environments in the home for their customers,” says Gabe Olson, Solatube International’s channel sales manager. “There was Synergy with AJ and his company. He’s warming and lighting their homes during the winter. This gives him a summer product to light up homes using the natural elements.” But the Solatube is not just for the Summer alone. It works all year, delivering the sun’s rays into your home to brighten your day and lift your spirits.

Most important of all, installation is incredibly simple and new Solatubes can be installed in just an afternoon, if not quicker. “Our Solatubes fit between the structure of the home and install in the joist bay of your roof,” Olson says. “So in less than two hours we can brighten up a room in your house that has never seen the sun before.” The Solatube is installed in the joist bay of your home. By doing it this way, there are no structural changes needed to be made besides the section in your roof and the spot to install the light fixture. But what happens when the sun is no longer up? Well the team at Solatube thought this through already. Built into every Solatube is a solar powered night light. A solar panel built into the highly reflective tube collects enough sunlight during the day to power a soft glow in the evening. “It’s kind of like a nightlight you would plug into the wall,” Olson says. “Same principle except this one charges during the day instead of having to be plugged in. It’s a great way to lighten up a space without being overwhelming in terms of light.” Some of the benefits of sunlight exposure have been shown to be increased mood, improved sleep schedules and focus thanks to boosting serotonin levels in the body. “The last couple of years have shown all of us how important our home life is,” says AJ Godwin, co-owner of Scott’s Fireplace. “This is a great opportunity to invest in your home and make it beautiful for those more fun and bright times ahead.” If you would like to warm up your home with a fireplace or brighten it up with a Solatube you can visit Scott’s Fireplace inside The Home Gallery at 2 North Talbot Road in Maidstone or call 519-723-4111.

CATERING TO THE COMMUNITY LATE NIGHTS. EARLY MORNINGS. The pressure to do it all—and do it flawlessly. And the guilt that follows when those impossible heights can’t be reached. Yes, parenting can easily be challenging. Fortunately, Three Lambs Registry & Baby Boutique is your solution. Three Lambs, founded in 2015 by Owner Jeanine Jodoin, is your exclusive one-stop shop for everything baby! “Our inventory has doubled since last year,” Jeanine explains. “All of our staff members are highly trained in product knowledge. It’s a very non-judgmental and non-opinionated environment. We’re not saying, ‘I have this. You have to have this!’ We know the right questions to ask to help you navigate the process and find the perfect product for you.” And in terms of products, Jeanine has only expanded her catalogue. “The last couple years have involved a lot of pivoting and adapting,” Jeanine states. “We thought about decisions we could make that would be best for our customers and streamlined our collection. We brought in more products from Canadian distributors leading us to have the largest selection of Canadian-made nursery furniture in the area as well as Canadian-made mattress options.” As part of their customer focused mandate, Three Lambs has also curated their selection of clothing and shoes. “In the wake of the pandemic, so many larger department stores have been unable to provide in-person shopping,” Jeanine reflects. “As a result, we decided to stock our store with things that were essential to our customers. Our clothing selection has ballooned over the last year with sizes ranging from preemie to 6 years.” Three Lambs currently boasts of a massive clothing and shoes section, stocked with the latest hard-to-find fashion brands, including Rylee + Cru and Quincy Mae. “Price-point wise, it’s like stepping into the GAP,” Jeanine states. “These are great quality sought-out brands made with natural fibers.

Some of them aren’t available at the big box stores, they’re only available online. We are one of the largest stock list for some of these brands in all of Canada. And you can find them all at our store on the east side of town. There’s no other children’s boutique like us in the area for clothing and shoes.” Furniture. Clothing. Toys. The list of high-quality, highdemand products is truly endless. “We also carry a vast selection of family wear,” Jeanine adds. “If you want to coordinate outfits for yourself and your baby, whether that’s pajamas or bathing suits, we have those in stock!” For Jeanine, it’s all about making sure that everyone is catered to, regardless of their needs or budgets. “We’ve had customers who were in a car accident three days before their due date and their car seat is damaged,” Jeanine explains. “We have a large variety of in-stock options for them to pick-up same day, when no other store did, helping alleviate their stress levels. Is that good for us as a business? Sure. Is that better for the customer? Absolutely!”

“Some people hear boutique and think expensive,” Jeanine explains. “However, to me, boutique means that I have carefully curated my products for you. These are products that aren’t always available anywhere else. I know what our clients are looking for. We know that they expect a certain level of quality. We seek out the latest, on-trend, safest products. We don’t fill our shelves with garbage. We’re investing in products that will provide a real, tangible value.” Expecting? Feeling overwhelmed? Book a complimentary consultation and let us help you create the registry of your dreams. Want to start now? Visit threelambs.ca and begin building your registry today.

And in terms of meeting her client’s evolving needs, Jeanine has spent the last few months expanding her developmental toy section. “We have a massive catalogue of developmental toys,” Jeanine states. “These are natural, toxic-free wooden toys that encourage wholesome play. We have the latest toys that you see plastered all over Instagram or Pintrest.” These developmental toys encourage children to use their imagination. “All our toys encourage a child’s development,” Jeanine stresses. “We don’t fill our shelves with plastic things that need a lot of batteries. We collect toys that encourage children to use their own minds. Whether that’s building something or studying the different contrasts. It’s all about nourishing creativity, about thinking outside the box.” This exceptional service and impressive inventory have made Three Lambs Baby Boutique beloved by their clients. “Just yesterday, I got a call from someone,” Jeanine states. “The woman said, ‘I have a random question. I have a small dog that gets tired easily on walks. Could you show me how to carry him in a baby wrap?’ And I said, ‘I don’t really have experience with that… but feel free to pop over and I can try to help!’ That’s how far our reach is. Someone who followed our Instagram wants my help carrying their dog! I’m always happy to help our community. People can always come to me for non-judgmental advice.” At Three Lambs it is not just about what’s the “best,” it’s about what’s the best for YOU.

SLAM DUNKING DREAMS Maurice Calloo’s Journey from Windsor’s West End To March Madness and Beyond STORY BY RYAN PERCY PHOTOGRAPHY BY OREGON STATE ATHLETICS

MOST KIDS WHO GROW UP with dreams of being a pro athlete want to make it big in college, then enter the pro leagues to earn their place in history for being the best of the best. While most never make it, one Windsor boy has grown up into a man that is more than halfway there. Maurice Calloo realized he was well on his way when he stepped out on the court, backed by his Oregon State Beaver brothers at his first March Madness tournament game in 2021. It was a dream come true. “At first I got the jitters,” Calloo says with a smile, sitting on a hotel bed as his team is readying up for an away game in Arizona. “I’ve been watching March Madness with my brothers and my mom since I was young.” While Oregon State did not win the tournament, finishing in the top eight, there were memories made and dreams fulfilled. “It was one of my goals and it was just an amazing

feeling to be successful and win a few games in the March Madness Tournament,” Calloo says. “Words can’t really describe how it feels.” Calloo grew up in Windsor’s west end. From his early years he wanted to be an athlete, but it was not basketball where he first stepped out onto a court, or rather, in a very Canadian way, a rink. “Little do they know I actually played floor hockey growing up at General Brock,” he says with a laugh about how his American teammates used to ribbingly ask why he did not shoot for the NHL instead of the NBA. “I know how to skate too. Hockey is still in my blood. I’m Canadian.” He did have sights set in different places, both basketball and football appealed to him. He had to make up his mind which path he wanted to go down. It was one year of floor hockey at General Brock before he switched jerseys and entered the basketball court. But Calloo points to skills and knowledge he gained during that year helped jump start his basketball career. This led to him crushing the record previously set by his older brother for most points scored in a game at General Brock, with Calloo scoring 38. “After I broke my brother’s record, I felt like basketball was for me,” Calloo says. “I saw this was going to be a good path for me, so I chose basketball over football.” From General Brock he went on to Catholic Central where he had already started building a bond with the players and staff there even when he was in grade school thanks to his brothers already being on the team. “I’d been going to Catholic Central to watch my brothers practice. I’d work out with them and even get to join their practices while I was in the seventh and eighth grades,” Calloo says. But even better than just the chance to train and improve was how he was able to build a support network around him. “Cusumano was one of the guys that kept me in the gym and going to basketball practices,” Calloo says of being able to lean on his coach, Peter Cusumano, for support. “I lived far away from Catholic Central, so the staff helped me get a ride if I didn’t have one or just come pick me up near the University.” Calloo found he excelled even more on the court in high school, he even helped lead Catholic Central to a WECSSAA championship his first year. This made

the fire of desire burn even brighter for Calloo. With the support of his team and coaches he decided the goal was across the border, getting into a US prep school for a shot at a college scholarship. “Windsor is a great city, but I felt for me to grow and build my brand as a basketball player and who I wanted to be, leaving Windsor was something I had to do at a young age,” Calloo says of having to make the decision to head south. “It was hard at first, but I knew what my goals were. Going to prep school had been one of my goals and something that I prayed for when I was in the sixth or seventh grade. It was a good feeling but at the same time kind of sad. It was a lot of emotions at the same time, but it turned out good for me.” From excelling at Huntington Prep in West Virginia he managed to get a full-ride scholarship at Oregon State, getting his degree in Speech Communication. When asked why he chose against the stereotypical Kinesiology program he laughs and says it is part of his grand plan. “One of the things I wanted to do after my basketball career was to commentate,” Calloo says, a smile still on his lips, “So being able to communicate and speak is something I need to learn and continue to learn throughout my career.” As he made his way to the US, he learned that he had to prove himself even more, since he’d constantly bump into some rather faulty assumptions Americans held of Canadian culture. “When I first came over to America, they’d say Canadians are soft, Canadians live in igloos and all kinds of crazy stuff,” Calloo says. “I got that at first, but I’ve been here so long some Americans think I’m American now.” But Calloo is still Canadian, still a Windsorite to the core. So, when he dreams of being finally drafted to the NBA there are two teams front and centre in his mind. “If I were to play on an NBA team it would be the Raptors or Pistons because that’s basically home for me,” Calloo says with a happy glint in his eyes. While he wants his own success, Calloo says one thing he wants to be is proof to anyone they can make it if they just set their mind on a goal and go at it. “Dreams do come true,” Calloo says, “You just got to keep working hard every day doing the things that you love and don’t forget anybody. If you put in the work and you grind every day, then what you want is reachable.” WLM Back to Contents

TEAM BRAD BONDY

Jumping in With Both Feet

It’s the biggest purchase of most people’s lives: buying a home. Taking that step requires finding the right person to guide us through the process, whom we trust with our life savings and our family’s future comfort. For over sixteen years, Brad Bondy and his team have been that trusted resource in Windsor-Essex County. Born and raised in Amherstburg, Brad attended Anderdon Public School and General Amherst. For nearly two decades afterward, he worked in various manufacturing plants. Following a plant closure, Brad switched gears and went into sales. He told his friend, John Bondy, a real estate agent—and now a member of Team Brad Bondy—that he considered doing real estate part-time. “Don’t go part-time,” John said. “Jump in with both feet.” In his own time, Brad did just that—and never looked back. For the past sixteen years, Brad has stuck to his simple philosophy for success: Hard work. He understands that it’s the little things that make the greatest impression on people. “We return people’s phone calls,” he says. “We lend a hand when someone needs help.” Brad is also a team player who places great value on his team. “We have Amy Bailey with the banking experience, who is a top agent in our area,” Brad says. “Brian, my brother—and best bud—is our commercial and land information specialist. He is another top producer. John Bondy has thirty-two years experience and is one of the most respected agents in the business. Our office

manager, Heather, and office whiz kid, Marissa, keep us on track, making sure all of the documentation is in order.” Brad and his team take it a step further, publishing an information sheet of listings that they make available to all realtors in the area. Yes, they help the competition. “We need to work together,” Brad says. “It makes it better for everyone. People see the team work, even with competitors, and they understand why we do this: It’s all about the client.” It can be an all-consuming job, but Brad keeps his eye on what is truly important in life: his family and his community. “They’re my life,” he says of his family: Luisa, his wife of thirty-four years, and his grown daughters Sarah and Jessica. “It’s not easy being married to a real estate agent—we’re called away at odd hours, whenever someone needs us. Luisa has always been supportive. I am blessed for having her by my side. ” Brad is also quick to credit his mentors for their advice over the years. “There’s John Bondy who first encouraged me to jump in with both feet,” he says. “And Bill Sutton, Theresa Dugal, Mark Lalovich and Michelle Maitre. They were all very helpful when I was starting out.” In the community, Brad volunteered for years coaching baseball and soccer, helping with bingo nights at his daughters’ school. One cause that is close to his heart is the Miracle League, where kids and adults of all ages and abilities play baseball on a diamond specially designed to accommodate wheelchairs and walkers. “It’s all about our clients, our families and our friends” Brad says. “We’re there when people need us.” For more information about how Team Brad Bondy can help with your real estate needs, find them online at bradbondy.com.

A Rising Star Joins Victory Lincoln The team at Victory Ford & Lincoln are excited to bring a new member to their family as Tanya Van Dongen comes aboard as Lincoln Sales Manager. Tanya, or TVD as she goes by, is a shooting star, with aspirations to reform the car buying system, making it more approachable and friendly. Prior to joining the automotive sales profession, Tanya planned to be a lawyer and was nearly done with exams when opportunity came knocking. “It was May of 2017,” Tanya says with a laugh at how she jumped into auto sales. “I hadn’t even finished my last exam and I was offered the position in sales. I didn’t take time off. I hit the ground running and haven’t stopped since.” Tanya blends a nose to the grindstone work ethic with a warm and welcoming personality reminiscent of your favourite aunt or best friend. The kind of person you can talk openly about issues with and not feel judged. She has branded herself on building relationships with clients and businesses in the community. “It is the greatest compliment to represent not only the Ford brand, but the Lincoln brand,” she says. Her secret to success? Sell a car how you would want to buy a car. “I want to provide a different experience than the high pressure one we’ve had for the last 50 years,” Tanya says with a smile. “I want to revolutionize the experience, make it open to anybody and make it a more relaxed, enjoyable time. Let the Sun Shine Through Bayview Glass Has Been Crafting Magic For 35 Years

NESTLED AT THE END of the cul de sac on Matthew Brady Boulevard is Bayview Glass. The building is a little unassuming but inside is almost like stepping into a magical workshop. Inside, massive glass sheets weighing thousands of pounds are placed on what are practically just giant air hockey tables. Here the huge glass panes are worked on and broken down into more sizable chunks. These become cabinet pieces, shelving, tables, windows, walls and among many other things. “If you have something you’ve seen online, we can research it,” says Eric LaMarre, Bayview Glass’s owner, “chances are we’ve done it before and if we haven’t, we can look into it and see if it’s possible.” LaMarre is continuing the family glass working business. His father Al started the company back in 1987 with just himself doing the work. Soon it grew to a few employees and kept growing. Now, 35 years later, the company has moved to a larger workspace and staffs just over 20 employees. “I got involved in the business when I was young,” Eric says, “I wanted

to pursue this and then went to school, did all that other stuff and ended up coming back.” LaMarre says the goal of Bayview Glass is to leave every single customer satisfied in both the initial process but also in continued support after installation is completed. “Say Mrs. Smith has had a shower for years and she’s done a great job keeping it clean, but the door needs to be adjusted,” LaMarre says, “We’ll just stop and adjust it then go on our way, it makes everyone happy.” From the initial call to the end product getting installed it should only take about four to six weeks. The initial design phase takes a week or two then, once you say go, LaMarre says it is only three or four weeks before the finished product has been made and installed. Unlike other building materials as well there has not been much of a shortage or wait for glass. “Monolithic glass, thankfully, has been one of the commodities that hasn’t been too affected by the pandemic,” LaMarre says. “We have a very good supplier and a very good relationship with them. They come down once a week just for us, they’re fantastic.” Bayview’s team also specializes in designEric LaMarre, Owner ing and installing custom glass projects. When LaMarre says custom, he really means it. Some of their projects have included entire house walls made from glass, frosted glass doors with acid-etched designs and even massive glass tables that look out of a movie villain’s lair. There does not seem to be anything they cannot put together when the creative minds at Bayview Glass get to work. “I always find something cool to recreate or to try,” LaMarre says with a smile. “My wife is a big proponent of no TV in the room. I can appreciate that. So, I built the closet out of a one-way mirror and hid a TV and put a fireplace in it as well.” From fixing broken windows to installing Euro-style showers and everything in between, if it is made of glass then the team at Bayview Glass can get it done. If you want to talk to the glass experts about your next project call 519-944-5277 or head to bayviewglass.com.

FAHRHALL HOME COMFORT SPECIALISTS

Get the Most Out of the Warm Weather With Indoor Air Quality The warm weather is just around the corner—and so are some of the less pleasant aspects of spring and summer, such as allergies. Is the pursuit of cleaner, fresher air in our homes a losing battle? Alana Mariani of Fahrhall Home Comfort Specialists says there are a number of things homeowners can do to improve their indoor air quality. “There are multiple factors that contribute to poor air quality in our homes,” Alana says. “If you have pets, there is dander from their fur. We all enjoy having the windows open in the warm weather, but that can allow pollen from trees and grass to enter our homes, which aggravates allergies.” Although the primary function of a home’s heating and cooling system is to maintain the temperature in the home, they are also responsible for circulating the air. If you’re serious about improving your indoor air quality, start at the source. “It’s easy to overlook the importance of cleaning and changing the air filters in home HVAC systems,” Alana continues. “These trap cold and flu viruses, dust, dander, pollen and other airborne contaminants. Setting a calendar reminder to change your filter— monthly, if possible, or at least every three months—can make a noticeable positive change in your home.” It’s worth remembering that not all filters are created equal. The old advice from our parents comes into play: “You get what you pay for.” Saving a few bucks buying bargain basement filters may mean less filtration and changing them more often. Every HVAC system comes with information about the optimal filter for that system. It’s a good idea to follow that recommendation.

“We recommend pleated, disposable filters,” Alana explains. “They capture more airborne contaminants, such as mold, dander, pollen. They keep your air cleaner and they last longer.” Depending on their home heating and cooling system, allergy sufferers might consider going with higher quality media filters, which are approximately five inches thick. Yes, they cost more, but they last longer and they capture more contaminants. With any filter, the best practice is to follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for how frequently they should be changed. Another good practice is having a licensed technician come out to inspect and maintain your home’s HVAC unit. Fahrhall Home Comfort Specialists’ technicians clean internal components, and perform various other diagnostic tests on the unit to ensure it’s performing at its peak. Regular servicing of your equipment also keeps it operating efficiently and lengthens the life of the unit. Nobody wants to hear it, but general house cleaning also contributes to improving indoor air quality. Regularly vacuuming and dusting within the home, as well as wiping down register covers, can ease the burden on HVAC filters. In newer homes, people are turning to Lennox Pure Air systems, which are integrated with their furnace. These systems remove up to 90 percent of viruses from the home, and combat three types of pollutants: germs/bacteria, airborne particles (pollen, dander, dust), chemical odors and vapors. They are highly effective air filtration and don’t use as much energy as you might think. Get the most out of the warm weather by following these easy tips for improved indoor air quality. For more information, check out Fahrhall Home Comfort Specialists at fahrhall.com for the latest in home comfort systems, or to read more tips on maintaining the system you already have.

is placed, they return to install the treatments. “All of our staff are very experienced and helpful,” says Mark. Interior designers and decorators are invited to bring their clients to Better Blinds and Drapery and see the possibilities. “Home tailors are also welcome to browse among our extensive fabric selection that Canadian mills sourced from around the world,” Kate says. Kate and Mark are always delighted whenever the company’s previous clients return. “They say their draperies and blinds are still in great condition; they just want to update the colours or styles to match newly painted walls or new furniture,” Kate notes. “We continue providing the same enduring quality and service today.”

Celebrating their 28th year in business, clients know that they can count on Better Blinds and Drapery for all new window coverings, repairs and service. “We are delighted that our outstanding customer service and business excellence has been recognized formally, with receiving the Consumer Choice Award this year”, says Kate, who has co-owned Better Blinds and Drapery with her husband, Mark, since they purchased it in March of 2014 when the original owner retired. “Window treatments are esthetic as well as practical. In addition to privacy, they provide insulation against winter cold and summer heat, and protect flooring and furniture from fading,” Mark says. As a specialty shop offering blinds, draperies, shutters and fabrics, Kate points out, Visit our Showroom or Have our Designer Come “We do just one thing and we do it exceedFREE SHOP AT HOME SERVICE ingly well. One misconception is that custom means expensive or inaccessible. It does not,” Kate says. “Upholding our standard for quality is just as important to us as being competitively priced.” Many clients are homeowners who want to dress their windows in ways that reflect their good taste. Some do a single room; others select treatments for their entire dream home. Other clients are corporate, requiring durable, attractive blinds and other coverings for the windows of their commercial buildings. “People appreciate that we have a modern showroom with our products on display, for custom order and purchase,” Mark says. “It’s beneficial to be able to see, feel and operate our window treatments. As certified motorization experts, having many different options ready for clients to compare is key in the selection process. There are so many choices.” After narrowing down the products and colours they like, the clients receive a free inhome consultation for final selection. While Kate and Mark take care of people in the Better Blinds and Drapery showroom, in clients’ homes, the fulltime staff designer creates beautiful treatments to dress windows. “Many clients aren’t sure what they’re looking for. We provide as much assistance as requested,” Kate says. Custom draperies are made locally, in Windsor, by their fulltime seamstress. In the factory attached to the showroom, staff manufacture, resize, and repair blinds. “Unlike some competitors, our blinds aren’t premade, stockpiled and then cut down. Ours are made exclusively for your windows,” Mark explains. PORTUGAL

Land of History, Beaches and Cuisine STORY BY MATTHEW ST. AMAND / PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOHN LIVIERO WHERE CAN YOU STAND inside a chapel decorated with human bones in the morning, visit a shrine where the Virgin Mary appeared 100 years ago at lunchtime, and by vacationers’ cocktail hour, lounge on a beach where 65 foot waves crash upon the shore? Portugal. Although Portugal is nestled beside Spain like a conjoined twin, make no mistake, the two countries are as contrary to one another as Romulus and Remus. “Portugal is not Spain,” says Rich Earl, travel consultant with Rick Steves Travel Talks on YouTube. It was from Rick Steves’ online travel show that Anita Liviero of Sooter’s Photography got the idea that she and her husband, John, should visit Portugal. “We were thinking about vacation destinations when I saw Rick Steves’ show on Portugal,” Anita remembers. “He had a complete fourteen-day trip planned out. I used many of his ideas for our vacation.” Anita’s planning began in March 2019 and by August of that year, she and John landed in Lisbon. “Lisbon is a beautiful city,” Anita says, “but you do not want to drive there.” Portugal’s capital city is known for its narrow streets and hectic traffic. Some roads are so steep, escalators have been installed to help pedestrians traverse the treacherous inclines. “But you are surrounded by history,” Anita continues. “Everywhere you turn, there is another ancient church, another museum or gallery. And the food!” Anita and John ate fish during their entire stay. Every afternoon, as they have done

for generations, Portuguese fishermen spread out the day’s catch on coastal beaches to dry in the sun, ready for sale to tourists and/or restaurants. After two days touring Lisbon, Anita and John rented a car and hit the road. “Portugal is part of the European Union,” Anita says, “so their highways are up to the German standard. It was very easy getting around. You could drive the entire length of the country in about eight hours.” Pro-tip: Renting a car with a transponder makes for speedier passage along toll roads. Among their destinations, Anita and John visited the coastal city of Nazare, famous for its fish and epic waves crashing upon the shore. Surfers from around the world go there to test their skills, appearing as small as grasshoppers among the swells. In November 2017, Brazilian surfer, Rodrigo Koxa, set a new world record, surfing an

80 foot wave. For those who prefer not to risk their lives in the surf, the beaches of Nazare are a peerless place to chill. “While walking around, we saw a street called ‘Leamington’,” Anita recalls. “After talking to a restaurant owner, we learned that after World War II, many people from Nazare went to Canada and settled in Leamington, Ontario. We couldn’t believe the coincidence.” Another day found them in Fátima, where three shepherd children famously claimed to see visions of the Virgin Mary in the early 1900s. In 1917, tens of thousands of people claimed to witness the “miracle of the dancing sun” in that area. Anita and John visited and photographed the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary, where they observed devout pilgrims crawling along the marble tiles on their knees, moving toward the sanctuary. Among other historic destinations, they visited the University of Coimbra. First established in Lisbon in 1290, the university was moved to different locations over the centuries. The university was finally moved to its current location in 1537 and is one of the oldest continuously operating universities in the world. “We toured the library,” Anita recalls. “It is quite an amazing place. We saw books there that were hundreds of years old.” Anita refers to the Johannine Library (a Baroque library, according to Wikipedia), which could be described as the Versailles of libraries. For anyone with even a passing interest in literature, history, art, or human achievement, it must rank as one of the wonders of the world. In the city of Évora, Anita and John visited one of the most surreal sites in the country: “Capela dos Ossos”—the Chapel of the Bones, where the interior walls are decorated with the bones of an estimated 5000 human beings. The chapel is part of the larger Royal Church of St. Francis, constructed by Franciscan monks in the late 16th century. At that time, there were as many as 43 cemeteries in and around Évora occupying valuable land. The monks decided to relocate the remains. Concerned about society’s earthly priorities at the time, the monks put the bones on display with a message above the entrance: “We bones, are here, waiting for yours.” Wine is cheaper than pop in Portugal, and that’s a handy thing after seeing a place like the Chapel of Bones. While staying in an AirBnB with kitchen facilities in another scenic spot, Anita and

John enjoyed visiting a local market, buying fresh food, and preparing a few of their own meals. When not strolling through museums and other historic sites, they relaxed on the beach. John’s camera was always at hand and he took hundreds of photographs. Their itinerary next took them to Sintra by train. “There, we climbed to the high cross,” Anita says, “so high in the mountains it was like riding above the clouds. Such a beautiful place.” Located in the greater Lisbon region, Sintra is home to the National Palace of Sintra. The palace is regarded as “the best-preserved medieval royal residence in Portugal, being inhabited more or less continuously from at least the early 15th century to the late 19th century”, according to Wikipedia. Other online sources refer to Sintra as a “fairy tale town”. The city of Porto, on the other hand, is known for its nightlife. “We wished we stayed longer in Porto,” Anita says of the city known for its wineries and bustling streets, filled with unique vendors and street performers. “We didn’t have time to see it all!” Anita and John also visited the city of Algarve, yet another locale known for its fresh fish and exquisite cuisine. The region is popular among British people and English is widely spoken there. If relaxing on the beach, enjoying all the great food is a touch too sedentary for some visitors, Algarve boasts a number of adventurous activities—among them, the Via Algarviana hiking trail, which is a “Great Pedestrian Route” (GR13) connecting Alcoutim to Cabo de São Vicente. The trail spans 300 km. In the fishing village of Salima, Anita and John balanced their visits to cultural sites with enjoying the local food and wine. Among the regional fare, they sampled mussels, sardines, tuna steak, as well as “bifana”, a traditional Portuguese sandwich made with pork. For dessert, they discovered a custard pastry called “nata”. “Everywhere we went, the food was amazing!” Anita notes. “The weather was perfect the entire time. We would definitely visit Portugal again. You’d want to make sure you have good walking shoes.” The return trip, however, will have to wait. The next destinations on Anita and John’s radar are Sardinia and Malta. For more information about traveling to Portugal, check out Rick Steves’ YouTube channel and his videos about visiting that and other countries. WLM Back to Contents

AN INTOXICATING TALE THE HISTORY OF WINDSOR’S SIX BUSTLING BREWERIES STORY BY KAREN TINSLEY / PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY WALKERVILLE PUBLISHING INC.

s

CHRONICLING THE LIFE and times of Windsor’s “original six” breweries, Brewed in Windsor—A Tasty History has all the makings of a Hollywood blockbuster: booze, bars, bootlegging, boats and bullets. Steeped in border city folklore, nostalgia and interesting stories of days gone by, this lively, lushly illustrated book is chock full of beautiful colour photos and beer paraphernalia. Co-author Chris Edwards takes us behind the scenes of researching, writing and marketing in today’s constantly evolving literary landscape. Local husband-and-wife historians Chris Edwards and Elaine Weeks are no strangers to the writing, publishing and marketing of books about Windsor and Detroit; including Brewed in Windsor, they have researched, written and published nine of their own titles and collaborated on nineteen others! Chris says, “Brewed in Windsor takes us back to the time when our city was home to six bustling breweries. We also get a fulsome glimpse of how Prohibition fueled their growth. In addition to supplying Windsorites with hundreds of gallons of tasty brews, when Detroit breweries were forced to close their doors, Windsor beer makers continued producing and ‘exporting’ their ‘liquid gold’”. Not only did our border city ship boatloads of beer to Detroit; Windsor became an American mecca for its splendid array of roadhouses, “each a glittering jewel, like a diamond-studded bracelet.”

Chris continues, “The deeper you dive into our local history, an intoxicating tale emerges. The Hiram Walker brewery won an award at the World’s Fair, which put Windsor on the radar. And then there are the connections to the underworld.” For the original Walkerville Brewing Company, it was the infamous Purple Gang and Al Capone. They broke into the Windsor beer business after Herman Radner (father of comedian Gilda Radner), bought the brewery in 1925—at the height of Prohibition. “Next thing you know”, says Chris, “Herman Radner is running the brewery exporting massive quantities of beer to the Purple Gang in Detroit. Then, some gangsters tried to kidnap him, and he was shot in the leg getting away.” “This made headlines in Detroit, and that’s when the media realized the mob connection.” Over at the Riverside Brewery, the River Gang was running the show. “Every bit as notorious as the Purple Gang, they built a brewery right on the river. They had a fleet of trucks on Belle Isle,” Chris adds. “When Riverside Brewery closed, they dumped all the beer into the Detroit River

to avoid paying tax on the product. People were rowing up in their boats with buckets to catch beer!” We asked Chris what inspired the idea for this book. “We knew about the 1999 book, ‘Brewed in Detroit’, which included a compilation of every brewery in Detroit on record, the brand names of all beers and ales marketed in Detroit, and stories of the rise and fall of many of the operations; but what really inspired this book was a Windsor man named Bill Marentette.” For a brief period, Bill was employed at the Walkerville Brewing Company. His grandfather Daniel Marentette owned and operated the storied Dominion House until his death in 1902. Bill maintained a veritable museum of artifacts and memorabilia from local breweries, some dating back to the late 1800’s. A respected member of the Canadian Brewerianist Society and the Essex County Historical Society, Bill was featured in The Windsor Star and on CBC Radio & TV. “We first met Bill several years ago, when he was a contributor to our magazine, ‘The Walkerville Times’. Our inaugural book, The Best of Times Magazine, featured four of his pieces,” Chris recalls. Sadly, Bill passed away from COVID in 2021. “He was 93 years old, but as vital and lucid as a man many years younger. “We dedicated Brewed in Windsor to his memory.” We think Bill would be proud! This 160-page book has obviously been meticulously researched and features more than 500 vintage photographs and illustrations (including beer and brewing memorabilia from Bill Marentette’s own massive collection). When asked about his writing process, Chris shares, “This is the ninth book Elaine and I have written together; we’ve collaborated on nineteen other historical books. Our company, Walkerville Publishing, has produced all of them, so I guess you could say we’re

54

L i f e

experienced. I’d say persistence is key—but sometimes it all just comes down to serendipity—I’ll be looking in the Windsor Star archives for something, and I’ll discover something else that’s amazing and relevant.” Brewed in Windsor also features a section titled, “Lost Bars of Windsor Essex”. For Windsor Baby Boomers and history buffs, it’s a trip down Memory Lane. As the book says, “though most drinking establishments on these pages have disappeared…we thought it highly appropriate to add this boozy blast from the past to Brewed in Windsor.” Which was no mean feat, according to Chris: “Ads from back in the day are a little hard to find; then I discovered directories featuring all the bar names. Many of the bars changed names so many times over the years. That was a challenge. Our Facebook community helped us out with that. What bar had the most names? One of them for sure was the Metropole.” But as challenging as it was, “Lost Bars” was one of the most fun parts to write: “like trying to find the missing pieces of a giant puzzle,” says Chris. Nearly 250 lost bars of Windsor Essex are featured. This section also addresses the effects of 9/11 on Windsor’s bar scene and touches on the current craft beer revival. What’s next for this dynamic literary duo? Chris is candid: “From a business perspective, publishing books doesn’t make a whole lot of sense anymore. But we can dream! Our big dream is to produce a book on the history of the Detroit River, but it will be labour intensive and expensive—so we may look for partners and sponsors.” Stay tuned! Brewed in Windsor: A Tasty History is available now for $24.95 direct from Walkerville Publishing, at select book and gift shops in Windsor-Essex and at www.walkerville.com. WLM Back to Contents

Cooking At Home Jason and Brooke Watorek OWNERS OF SEATON SUNROOMS

“The roasted red pepper and tomato bisque I started cooking when Jason and I first got married because we planted a huge garden and WAY over-planted tomato and pepper plants. From there I started looking for recipes that I could make using up a large number of our veggies at one time. It was fun to try and be creative. Over time I adjusted the recipe and made tweaks to it, but it’s still something I make on a regular basis because the whole family loves it on a Fall or Winter day! “The Caesar dressing recipe holds a special place in our memories because on the weekend we got engaged, we went to the 360 CN Tower restaurant. This was the chef ’s specialty dressing. We both love a good Caesar salad, but don’t enjoy the creamy dressings. This is a tangy, oil-based dressing that is to die for! We add it with the soup for Jason, my son Declan and I. My daughter Portia, however, won’t touch the ‘yucky green stuff’!” For the complete recipes, visit windsorlife.com Back to Contents

LIVING AT HOME LONGER NOW A REAL POSSIBILITY!

Bridging A Glaring Gap In Windsor’s Senior Care Market A slip or fall at home can happen without warning and change life forever. Falls can result in broken bones, which can mean prolonged hospital stays, permanent disabilities or loss of independence. For years, AgeSafe Canada Certified Senior Home Safety Specialists Todd Miner and Karen Crone have been helping Windsor and Essex County area seniors age safely. “When we learned that 1 in 3 adults over age 65 falls each year, and that more than 80% of those falls happen in or around home, we saw a gap in the local senior care market. We got really excited about addressing the need,” Karen says. “We have 25 years of healthcare experience and Todd is a fully insured, experienced handyman. Starting Porchlight Home Services was the ideal opportunity to make a difference doing what we love.” Todd adds, “Many seniors we talked with thought that once living at home became difficult, their only options were to move to a retirement or assisted living facility. But in most cases, with some modifications and support, living at home longer is a real possibility. That’s not only a huge relief for them; it can also be a relief for loved ones, who may not have the time or resources to help.” A 2020 National Institute of Aging/TELUS Health survey revealed that 91% of Canadians (of every age) and almost 100% of Canadians aged 65 and older planned to live at home for as long as possible. Karen, (founder of one of Southwestern Ontario’s first senior care pharmacies) says, “Falls account for 25% of hospital

admissions and 40% of nursing home admissions. 55% of falls happen at home; another 23% occur nearby. We can help.” Todd adds, “Being proactive can reduce risks, increasing the ability to live independently. That’s why we strongly recommend a Home Safety Assessment.” What’s a Home Safety Assessment? A Porchlight Certified Senior Home Safety Specialist inspects more than 250 evaluation points across 75 areas inside and outside, including: • Walkways, porches, garages, decks • Interior/exterior doorways • Fire safety • Trip/slip/fall hazards • Bathroom safety • Proper lighting • Stairways/railings and other areas as needed The Certified Specialist presents recommendations in priority order and provides quotes for modifications. Other Porchlight Home Services: • Senior Home Safety Modification Plans: for safer, more accessible, well-maintained homes • Ongoing Home Maintenance Plans: handyman repairs, seasonal home maintenance and everyday chores that older homeowners are either no longer able to do—or just not interested in doing. Finally, the peace of mind that living safely at home brings—for years to come! For more information contact Karen Crone at 519-995-0477 or hello@porchlighthomeservices.ca. and receive expert advice about cost effective insulation solutions for your home. Fred says, “Butch is the ‘grant and rebate whisperer’. He’ll steer you through the entire process, making it painless and worry free.” With energy costs continuing to rise, ensuring your home is properly and sufficiently insulated has never been more important. If you live in Riverside or South Windsor and reside in one of the hundreds of homes built before 1970, your home was built without insulation. In some cases, grants can cover up to 90% of costs to properly insulate. Fred stresses, “We are very conscientious; we work carefully, respectfully and in a timely manner.” “Don’t waste any more time, energy or money!” To arrange a free in-home consultation, call Fred or Butch at 519-962-6062 or visit mister-insulation.com.

Did you ever notice during this past winter that your roof had less snow on it than others in your neighbourhood? Mr. Insulation owner operator Fred Corp says, “That’s a sure sign you had heat escaping due to poor insulation. Proper insulation is the best way to keep your heating and cooling costs under control. When you feel cold drafts during winter months you know something needs to be done to contain escaping heat, but did you know that poor insulation also affects your home during the warmer months? Just as warm air can escape, so can cool air! Mr. Insulation can help. Not only will you be more comfortable all year round, but you’ll also save money!” Mr. Insulation is committed to quality installation of every type of insulation to improve home energy efficiency. While based in Windsor, they are proud to serve Chatham-Kent, Sarnia-Lambton and beyond. Fred explains, “We specialize in three different types of insulation: Spray Foam, Blown and Batt. Spray foam offers the most benefits: significant energy cost savings, increased building structure strength, is permanent, will not sag, blocks air and moisture filtration, eliminates ice “damming” (ice and water buildup caused by repeated thawing and freezing) and improved air quality. The most common form is “Batt and Roll” or “Blanket” insulation. It typically comes in rolls, is generally made of fiberglass and is the least expensive way to insulate a home. Blown insulation consists of small, loose fragments that are sprayed into a space using compressed air.” “We take care of everything from start to finish; you can feel comfortable, worry-free and trust that the job is being done right!” Offering a customer experience that includes seamless communication, knowledgeable, professional tradespeople, smooth on-site organization and solid, quality results every time, Mr. Insulation has more than a quarter century of local experience with both new home builds or existing homes of any age. And speaking of older homes, after 20 years or so, insulation can settle, which impacts efficiency. Many older homes also have uninsulated basements or crawl spaces. “Now is the perfect time to take advantage of a home insulation upgrade,” Fred advises, “because up to $10,600 is available through two different grant programs: Fred Corp Enbridge Home Reno and the federal govButch Laframboise owner sales ernment’s Greener Homes.” By arranging for a Mr. Insulation free home consultation with Butch Laframboise, Call today @ 519-962-6062 | www.mister-insulation.com you’ll find out if you’re eligible for a grant

UNIQUE FOUNDATION SOLUTIONS IF YOU’RE LOOKING to start your next construction project in 2022, Techno Metal Post is ready to help you build the right foundation. The world’s leading helical and screw pile company, Techno Metal Post is at the cutting edge of construction and expansion projects. Greg Geml, Windsor/Essex’s Techno Metal Post representative, says their technology is the most versatile foundation technology on the market. “It basically replaces a concrete footing,” he says. “We drill it and install it, and the homeowner or the builder can then build on it right away. There’s a huge time-saving advantage.” Techno Metal Post prides itself on the invention of its helical pile technology, a screw-like steel beam that is installed directly into the ground as the foundation. With over 155 locations around the world, more and more construction projects are taking advantage of their specialized technology. “We do the most helical pile projects per capita, and our technology is always improving,” says Greg. “But the number one aspect of our business is our reliability.” Greg and his team put a deep level of attention toward implementing helical piles efficiently and accurately. “We don’t want our clients to ever have to worry about their foundation.” Another key focus for Techno Metal Post

is their attention to their client’s needs. “We have our own engineering department inhouse,” says Greg. “So, we’re able to deal with the customers ourselves, and we’re able to keep the costs low for our customers as well.” On the topic of cost, Techno Metal Post remains one of the most affordable foundation solutions for clients across the globe. Being the world leader in helical and screw piles has allowed for a much stronger resilience against the current supply chain crisis. Greg notes, “One advantage we have is that we’re all over the place, we have been able to acquire steel with projections into 2022 and 2023. We make sure that we can handle the supply and the demand,” he says. “There’s no steel shortage for us or our customers.” For residents and businesses looking to build their next project in 2022, one of the advantages of Techno Metal Post is the integrity of the helical pile technology compared to traditional concrete solutions.

“We’ve done tests with our helical pile solution, where we apply huge amounts of pressure with a crane,” says Greg. “Ultimately, we were getting triple the performance than what we saw with concrete.” With helical piles, home builders exponentially boost the integrity and the value of their projects, and more construction companies are choosing Techno Metal Post every year. For Greg, making sure that Windsorites are aware of the advantages of helical and screw piles is an important mission. “There’s no job too small for us,” says Greg. “We just finished a clothesline recently, we only needed one helical pile. So, we work on a huge variety of projects and we’re happy to do that for our customers.” Greg Geml and the rest of the Techno Metal Post Windsor-Essex team are looking forward to helping you with your construction projects. If you want to learn more about their cutting-edge helical pile solutions, visit their website at technometalpost.com, or call them at 519-800-0876.

DEFINING HOME Windsor’s The Blue Stones Reflect on Their Career STORY BY CAMERON CHAPPUS / PHOTOGRAPHY BY SAMEER JAFAR

IT’S NEVER BEEN HARDER to be a band. In an era where so many musical acts are postponing live shows into the mid-2020s, Tarek Jafar and Justin Tessier of Windsor’s The Blue Stones have had a surprisingly busy year and a half. “It’s funny, because compared to a lot of bands, we’ve had it pretty good...” Justin, the band’s drummer, continues, “...We were on tour as everything was closing down but then we came back pretty soon .” The Blue Stones, a rough and raw alt-rock duo known for their energetic live shows and bluesy hooks, reflect on their journey as a band.

62

For Tarek, the direction of going into a career of music was set from a young age. “Music was sort of embedded in my family from an early age.” The singer and guitarist goes on to credit his family further, “[My mom] loved music, she loved classical music and jazz music and she would teach piano, so I guess that was my first experience with music.” Tarek eventually moved from the piano to the guitar but still valued those formative days with more classical instruments. “I started to play [and learn] guitar on my own and that musical foundation. I guess it blossomed to the point where I wanted to show Justin what I was writing.” From Justin’s perspective, a better musical counterpart couldn’t have approached him. “I grew up in a rock’n roll family,” he says. “No one played music, but I was always surrounded by it.” Like Tarek, Justin also found lessons were not for him, and eventually learned the drums on his own. “Being a drummer is like being a goalie on a hockey team, everyone needs you for their band. So, I played in a bunch of different bands in grade school and high school.” Breaking into Windsor’s music scene is no simple feat for any local act but as Tarek and Justin recall, their early experiences were positive. “We were kind of lucky... At our very first show, we had a lot of close friends and family come out. Partly because they wanted to come out and support us, but also partly because they were like, ‘Tarek and Justin are playing a show?!’” Apparently, it was more curiosity and confusion that garnered the band’s first crowd than genuine interest but the duo was not planning to disappoint. “Everybody really enjoyed it, and that was a huge ego boost.” Tarek cites their shows at Windsor’s own Phog Lounge as a pivotal moment in their upbringing. “One of the cool things about Phog is that it’s a very well-known venue. They really look at bands that are trying to make a name for themselves in Ontario,” Justin adds, “It’s a small room that has a lot of notoriety at the same time.” After landing a string of successful local shows, Tarek and Justin finally had the opportunity to record their first EP in 2011. Tarek recalls “it was so fun and exciting because at that point we recorded everything on our own from Justin’s garage.” Although they were proud of what they had made, they soon found they wanted more. “[We] were sitting in my car outside a McDonalds one night and we were listening back to the album. We were like, ‘there’s something missing on this album.’ We didn’t know

how to communicate what we thought was the issue, but we just felt that there wasn’t enough space.” Luckily, The Blue Stones found a direction they could thrive in with 2015’s Black Holes. “It’s one of our proudest releases,” Tarek says. “I think that learning experience from the first EP really helped us hone into what we wanted to be as a band.” The title track of the album, “Black Holes (Solid Ground)”, is a song that millions of people continue to connect with. “That song was written while [Justin] and I were living together in Windsor. We were working full-time but also pursuing music,” Tarek recalls “that song is about that choice; choosing between the steady and secure life, versus that risky, ambitious choice.” In 2020, the band was nominated at the Juno Awards for Best Breakthrough Artist, and in 2021, they released their sophomore album, Hidden Gems. Coming off the heels of Black Holes’ re-release in 2018 and years of touring, Tarek and Justin felt intimidated by the prospect of a new album. “We didn’t want to go through the sophomore slump, where everyone compares it to the debut,” Tarek notes. “It was so amazing to work with Mutemath’s Paul [Meany] on this album and it was a mix of that, plus a drive to top our debut album that produced this really great album that we can be proud of.” For a band that has toured so extensively and, especially through the global pandemic, it’s important to have a sense of home. “I live in Windsor; I do love living here. It is nice to come back to where we came up as a band and to go back to the places where we started… being in touch with our roots keeps us grounded,” says Tarek. “Justin and I share a good group of friends, they have that sort of Windsor grit—they’re definitely the kind of guys who will make fun of you and tease you... In a way, I enjoy that because it keeps your ego in check.” Justin, a Kingston resident, has always known himself as a Windsorite. “Every time I plan a visit to Windsor, I say, ‘I’m going home,’” he says, “We’re both very grateful to have had such a great city and group of people to help us come up.” The Blue Stones are embarking on Hidden Gems World Tour in 2022, and say they’ll be hitting the studio soon to work on new material. STORY BY RYAN PERCY PHOTOGRAPHY BY OLIVIA O’NEIL

MIXED SIGNALS Kaitlyn Frances Changes Gears and Goes Viral ALMOST EVERYONE HAS A DREAM they want to chase, but with paying bills, managing relationships and attending school there sometimes are not enough hours in the day. Kaitlyn Frances is a singer and songwriter, originally from Chatham-Kent, who found her way down to Windsor and set up new roots. Originally it was for schooling, a four-year degree in psychology at the University of Windsor. But as the pandemic started to send her hurtling towards burnout from online classes, she made a decision. “You’re stuck on the high school, university then job pipeline,” Frances says as she stares out the window of her waterfront apartment, “no one ever says after high school if you have a dream go for it.” With the pandemic shifting her life to online classes and social situations being cancelled, postponed or eroded burnout started setting in. Classes and lessons she would attend with glee became monotony where she felt she was teaching herself more than the school was. It all came to a head in her fourth year, a moment where things started to turn sour.

68

W i n d s o r

L i f e

She felt like she was drowning. The bubble was ready to pop. “In the pandemic people are dying all the time, I could die next week,” she says with a sigh, reflecting on her mortality, “So I was like, ‘why am I doing this?’ I was locked in my room with my computer. I’d rather just sit here and write music all day, because that’s what I love to do.” The idea burst out and blossomed after a meeting with her parents. She told them she did not find any joy in her studies anymore and showed her mother some of her music. “I showed her a few tracks and she was like ‘I knew you could sing, but I didn’t know you could actually create, is this something you want to do?” Frances reminisces, her eyes glittering with old happy tears, “I was crying and told her ‘I’ve always wanted to do music, but I didn’t want to disappoint you.’ My parents said they could never be disappointed in me. Being true to myself and actually using my gift was the best thing for them.” Frances took the chance from there, diving into music, writing lyrics and recording at local studios. All while teaming up with local and international producers.

What developed was a sizable backlog of tracks, enough to already fill out an EP and then some. At this stage in her career though, Frances is focusing on singles, aiming to put out one track a month to build up her listeners and fanbase. Her debut track on Spotify, originally put out to claim her artist profile, is you’re in love with my best friend. The track is a slow R&B walk down a path of anxiety and worry, based around Frances’s relationship with a previous boyfriend. “I was so insecure around him, and I was always thinking ‘I bet you like my best friend better than me’ because he seemed to laugh more with her than with me and smile more,” Frances recounts, “The only reason I put it out was because I thought maybe somebody else had experienced that feeling, that random anxiety filled thought.” She was right, her first track struck a chord with people stumbling across it. Not long after, she started receiving messages from girls who had gone through similar situations and feelings. After releasing more music, she debated removing the track as it did not match the same tone of her other music. “I did decide to keep it up,” Frances says with a smile, “it will always look cringy

because that was my first song. But even though I don’t think it’s my best work, I’ve had people who love it so I don’t want to take that away.” Her song writing process is one of instantaneous creation. She describes it as bubbles of inspiration, caused by hopes and fears, anxiety and joy. The feelings build up, eventually becoming ideas she can play with and draw from. But if the track does not come out at first it probably was not meant to be. Her second track, mixed signals, is a funky pop mix about meeting her current boyfriend and unsure if she was actually hitting it off when they first met. Her third track Electric is a techno funk dance track inspired by her blossoming relationship with her boyfriend. But even more important was how it led to her blowing up. Her celebration video on TikTok of Electric’s first radio play garnered over five million views. With that fame came a flood of fans and loving messages. However, all the positivity was not without some negativity. The occasional comment of ‘you’re not actually good’ or ‘I don’t believe your music was on the radio’ did not dissuade Frances. “My music is a reflection of me so sometimes it’s hard to not take it personally,”

Frances sighs, “But I have to remember this person doesn’t know who I am, how good a friend, daughter or girlfriend I can be. That’s how I stay sane, I’m going to expect haters, that’s inevitable.” One of her latest tracks, close to me, which features local rapper and producer Kin9 G has even gotten a permanent place on the MIX 96.7 playlist and has plans to be distributed to over a hundred radio stations across North America. While she lives and breathes music and could almost survive on it alone Frances does have her pastimes. Exercising, playing with her dog, making charcuterie boards and spending time with her boyfriend. This helps fight off the sanity draining abyss that is having to be her own social media manager and constant advocate as an up-andcoming musician. Kaitlyn plans to release at least one track every single month this year with a further goal of an EP and two different albums showing off her R&B and Pop music talent respectively. If you want to learn more about Kaitlyn Frances you can stream her music on Spotify and Apple Music and find her as @kaitlynfrancess on Twitter, TikTok and Instagram. WLM Back to Contents

LEADING THE CHARGE The Windsor Express Make Their Return To Pro Basketball and The Community STORY BY CAMERON CHAPPUS PHOTOGRAPHY BY IAN SHALAPATA/WINDSOR EXPRESS 2022 HAS SEEN the return of several local sports events in the Windsor region. After a long and egregious pandemic, riddled with lockdowns and event cancellations, many athletes returning to their respective fields. Dartis Willis, the owner of the renowned Windsor Express basketball team, feels that his team’s return has a bigger impact than most Windsorites realize. “So many people have had a contribution and take stock in the team. The community connection is real.” Though true of so many other local sports teams, Willis feels that the Windsor Express has had an especially profound local impact. Like so many of us, the COVID-19 pandemic gave Willis and his organization greater respect for their pre-pandemic lives. “It was a time where we simply missed the things that we had, and we appreciate them now more than ever,” he says. “We really miss the community and we miss being on the court.” Having been away from the game for over a year, Willis notes that his outlook on basketball has changed since his departure. “We all have a different approach to the game itself, to the fans,

the city and the community. That certain level of appreciation that you get when something is removed from you—we feel that gap, that emptiness.” Despite this, he notes that he and the team, as well as all the staff and community involved with the Express, feel as excited as ever. “Every player that we speak with, there’s a certain level of excitement,” says Willis. “Whenever you talk to our staff, they’re really excited about partnership opportunities, seeing fans come back to see games and connecting with local venues. You can see and hear the excitement about returning.” Read the complete story at windsorlife.com.

THE LASTING GIFT OF DONATION Longtime Friend Surprises The Other With His Kidney Transplant Eligibility STORY BY ALLEY L. BINIARZ JARRETT PIKE DIDN’T DONATE his kidney to be recognized as a hero, but he’s been seen as one all the same. When his close friend Kyle Damphouse found out that he had end stage kidney disease (IgA nephropathy), Jarrett didn’t hesitate before testing his blood type to find out whether he was a match. “Kyle isn’t the type of guy to put anyone out. Even when he knew he needed the transplant he tried finding other avenues so none of his friends would have to donate,” Jarrett says, explaining how since the disease is unfortunately hereditary, none of Kyle’s family members were able to donate. After being diagnosed in February, Kyle went through six cyclophosphamide treatments (chemotherapy) which didn’t stop the disease. “My thought process after diagnosis was what is the next move and how can I stay alive,” Kyle adds. “The next step was PD dialysis, which I had surgery for in August to install a PD catheter. It was quite the journey to

finally start feeling better in October, but I needed to start dialysis to get onto the list for a transplant.” Kyle had no idea that Jarrett was already in the process of becoming a blood match for him, which he found out over dinner one night. “I never asked...I couldn’t ever ask for something like this. He just stepped up and did it.” He says that Jarrett was completely selfless throughout the entire situation and stood behind him through all of the testing once he met with the transplant team in September.
