For 29 years, the LaSalle Strawberry Festival has brought family activities and entertainment to our community. We look for high quality entertainment that is sure to please young and old alike. It is also a venue to share the talents of our local community. There are several community program demonstrations taking place during Sunday’s Family Day. Be sure to support our local community and watch them perform what they do best! There are many great food booths to choose a tasty treat or two. New this year, adults can sit back and relax in the Molson Beer Garden. Of course, the best food to eat are the local strawberries. For only $5, you can enjoy some strawberries and ice cream, and then buy some strawberries to take home! We are very excited that both Gob and Steven Page will take the stage this weekend. This is top notch Canadian entertainment! We also welcome The West Coast Lumberjack Show, an action-packed family-friendly show featuring traditional lumberjack events. Of course, the LaSalle Strawberry Festival also hosts pageants, a carnival, a parade and fireworks, plus much more! It’s a weekend full of fun for all! We would like to sincerely thank our volunteers, sponsors, Town of LaSalle Administration and staff and the community groups taking part in this year’s event. We could not have hosted the LaSalle Strawberry Festival without your support. We welcome you to the 29th Annual LaSalle Strawberry Festival. This is the perfect kick-off to summer! We can’t wait to see you. Sincerely, Sue Desjarlais and Crystal Meloche LaSalle Strawberry Festival Co-Chairpersons

LaSalle Celebrates th 25 Anniversary

June 1, 2016 marked LaSalle’s opted to define themselves as 25 anniversary. In 1991, residents a town and incorporated as the of the Township of Sandwich West Town of LaSalle. LaSalle is now one of the larger communities of Essex County with a population of almost 30,000. Named after the French explorer, Rene-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle who sailed “Le Griffon down the Detroit River th

in 1679, French settlers first established roots in the area in the mid 1700’s. A mission was established in the Town of Sandwich, resulting in people settling in the Turkey Creek area. LaSalle’s history and that of Essex County were very much entwined when they were officially identified as part of Upper Canada in 1792.

Ever wonder what the ship in our logo is about? It’s a rendition of “Le Griffon that sailed down the Detroit River in 1679. It was the first ship to sail on the upper Great Lakes, and then vanished. “Le Griffon is the most hunted shipwreck in the history of the Great Lakes. (www. seawolfcommunications.com)

LaSalle Strawberry Festival 2016

Best Part of the LaSalle Strawberry Festival: Local Berries Local grower, Brad Raymont of Raymont Farms in Cottam, is supplying LaSalle with fresh strawberries for this year’s Strawberry Festival. This is the fifth year that Raymont has provided LaSalle with local berries. For one festival, LaSalle orders more than 300 flats of strawberries or more than 1,800 quarts! These are sold at the strawberries and ice cream booth, or sold by the quart/flat to visitors who would like to take the red berries home. Raymont uses raised plastic beds, high tunnels and drip irrigation to improve the quality, taste and length of their growing season, while minimizing the impact on the environment. This allows Raymont to start harvesting strawberries in May and continue through September. This year, Raymont’s Berries picked their first flat of strawberries on May 22. That’s the day that their stand on County Rd. 14 in Cottam opened for the season. For more information about Raymont’s Berries, visit them on Facebook. Children can take part in strawberry planting at the LaSalle Strawberry Festival. Sponsored by Raymont’s Berries, strawberry planting will take place on Sunday from 10 am to noon. Children can also take part in the strawberry eating contest. New this year, the strawberry eating contest will take place during the Minute to Win It Show beginning at noon. The strawberry eating contest is sponsored by Reaume Chevrolet Buick GMC. Be sure to stop by the strawberries and ice cream booth, and for $5 enjoy a delicious strawberry and ice cream treat!

Take some berries home! Make sure you purchase a flat of fresh local berries to bring home. To store the strawberries, remove them from the original container with a dry paper towel in the bottom. The paper towel is important to absorb the condensation that berries produce. Do not wash them until just before use. Using this method, you should be able to keep your berries fresh and good for seven to 10 days. When ready to wash, leave the stem and leaves in place. Removing them before washing causes them to soak up more water and diminish the flavor.
