HOLIDAY BY DESIGN

By Stephanie Renaud B.A., B.Ed. If you are anything like me, the closer the holidays get, the higher your blood pressure creeps. With less than two months left until The Big Day, pressure is beginning to mount to get your shopping done and procure the perfect gift for everyone on your list. It’s on you to create amazing memories for your children that will last a lifetime. It all hinges on the perfect gift on Christmas morning. Or does it? With the stores already switching their merchandising over to the yearly holiday themed paraphernalia, the TV already beginning to blare commercials about that perfect gift, and advertisers everywhere luring you in with holiday themed promises of bliss and eternal love, it might seem like it does. Stop for a minute. Stop in the middle of the tidal pull towards the default insanity of this season and get quiet. What do you really want? I am willing to bet that joy, or happiness or peace is your answer. You can’t buy those things, and you can’t buy things that will guarantee to create those feelings for others. You can design a holiday that makes those feelings possible.

4

November 2017 | Windsor Parent

It starts with getting really clear about how you want to feel, and designing your holiday experience around those feelings, rather than giving in to the default setting of crisis and rush and wasteful mindless consumption. Pay attention to your intention as you begin to prepare for your holiday. What is really at the root of it all for you? If you really want to experience peace and joy this holiday, will spending yourself into thousands, or tens of thousands of dollars worth of debt achieve that? Probably not. It is more likely to create sleepless nights, and heart attack worthy credit card bills. Knowing what your budget is, and honouring that will definitely help you to sleep easier, and haven’t you already lost enough sleep as a parent? I thought so. Budget, and then behave. Once you have your budget, you are going to start buying, and it is really easy to fall into the trap of going overboard because the shiny things at the mall are oh so shiny, and it would feel oh so good to know that you were the one who bought the best present this year. Pause a moment. When you feel that pressure to break your budget and buy that incredible thing, ask yourself why. The economy is driven by the subconscious desire to acquire material possessions in pursuit of pleasure. It is up to you to remember that pleasure is not happiness.

Pleasure is short lived, and it is followed inevitably by pain. The pain of a broken budget and an astronomical credit card bill. Consume consciously, and create freedom with every choice. Another crazy making item on the holiday itinerary are the gatherings, events, parties and all manner of other traditional get-togethers that will start overcrowding your calendar. If peace and joy are what you are after this holiday, you’re going to have to learn to say NO to some of them in order to say YES to your peaceful holiday. Decline with grace and enjoy the space you create in your life that will bring you closer to feeling how you want to feel this holiday. December doesn’t have to be a grey hair inducing hurricane of crazed consumption, mounting debt and packed calendars. Take back control of your holiday. Celebrate by design, not default and create the Christmas you have always dreamed of. It’s all possible. Stephanie Renaud is a Windsor-based writer specializing in parenthood. Local youth aim to make a difference with new Interact Club Story and photo by Matt Weingarden

Are you a young person looking to make a difference in your community? The Interact Club of LaSalle, a chapter of the Rotary Club of LaSalle Centennial could be just the place for you to get started. The organization held its first membership drive and promotional event at the Vollmer Culture and Recreation Complex recently. The club, which was founded only a few months ago with members from Sandwich Secondary School and Villanova Catholic High School, invited community members to ‘Fall Into Interact’ – an afternoon of games, treats and educational displays to learn more about the club and its mandate. “We are a brand new club, which is a youth extension of the LaSalle Centennial Rotary Club,” explained Brittney Lawrence, liaison for the Interact Club. “The purpose of (last month’s) event was to create awareness about the club and some of the activities that we participate in. We’re looking for new members to sign up and get involved helping out our community.” Interact Clubs bring together young people ages 12-18 (Grades 10 through 12) to develop leadership skills while discovering the power of ‘Service Above Self’. The Interact Club of has a mandate to give back to the community by completing at least one project that impact their local community and one project that is international in scope.

Armed with energy and a multitude of ideas The group – armed with energy and a multitude of ideas – is prepared to do good in the world. They have already finished their first project – the collection of gently used soccer uniforms in collaboration with the LaSalle Stompers and Amherstburg Soccer League. Lawrence added that the uniforms will be distributed to youth in Ghana and Ethiopia. On a local level, the group is looking for ways to help out the LaSalle Community Food Bank leading up to the holiday season. Also, another pet project includes Purple Pinkies for Polio” eradication fundraiser and the Rotary international ShelterBox project.

“I love fundraising and it’s very important to give back and help others,” according to Morgan Comiskey, a new member of the organization. “It makes me feel good knowing that I’m helping to make every day better for those who may need it.” This club is one of 20,372 Interact Clubs worldwide that are sponsored by local Rotary Clubs. The Interactors are joining a network of a half million other youth worldwide. “It is a great opportunity to meet new people, learn and develop new skills all while helping others,” said Lawrence. “We hope youth will come out and learn about the great opportunities to have Dionne Orthodonics - 1.2h 2017 fun and be part of thisNovember vibrant group!”

On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918, World War I fighting ceased. The war, which had raged on throughout Europe for a little more than four years, claimed the lives of more than nine million combatants and seven million civilians. The Allies squared off against the Central Powers of Germany and AustriaHungary, and the conflict involved nations from all over the world. World War II was even more devastating. Ultimately, 100,000 Canadian soldiers lost their lives in these two wars combined. It is in their honour - and in the name of all the servicemen and women who continue to risk their lives in service of their country – that Remembrance Day was established. Remembrance Day, sometimes referred to as Armistice Day or Poppy Day, is celebrated each year on November 11. All Canadians are encouraged to pause at 11 a.m. to remember the many soldiers who lost their lives. Many people also wear red poppies, a flower that has become synonymous with the holiday. NOVEMBER IS DIABETES AWARENESS MONTH

A dental health exam may reveal warning signs Regular dental checkups are essential to maintaining oral health. In addition to preventing dental caries and removing tartar that contributes to gum disease, dental checkups can alert patients to other potential health problems. For example, symptoms of periodontal disease may be indicative of the presence of diseases that stems from outside of the mouth, including diabetes. Diabetes, a condition of uncontrolled blood sugar or insulin production, can affect many areas of the body, including the mouth. Diabetics face a high risk of oral health problems because of fluctuating levels of blood sugar, which impairs white blood cells. White blood cells are the body’s main defence against disease and are dispatched when a virus or bacteria is present. Should white blood cells be rendered less effective, the body’s defence system is compromised and infections can occur in the mouth and elsewhere. Those with diabetes may complain of certain oral symptoms. Uncontrolled diabetes can result in a decrease in saliva flow, which leads to dry mouth. Saliva is important to wash away bacteria in the mouth. Gum inflammation can occur because diabetes causes blood vessels to thicken, slowing the flow of waste and nutrients from bodily tissues. An increase in bacteria and the compromised state of white blood cells makes for the perfect environment for periodontal disease. Furthermore, uncontrolled diabetes can make it more difficult for the mouth and other areas of the body to heal. Therefore, there may be recurrent mouth infections, sores and other symptoms of irritation. Thrush, a condition of overabundant yeast in the body that can cause white patches and soreness in the mouth, is also more prevalent among diabetics. Not only are people with diabetes more susceptible to serious gum disease, but serious gum disease may have the potential to affect blood glucose control and contribute to the progression of diabetes. Many people are unaware they have diabetes until an oral health exam raises a red flag that warns of uncontrolled blood sugar. Those who are aware of their diabetes should take treatment seriously to keep blood sugar levels in check. They also should discuss their diabetes with a dentist and other oral health practitioners so that a custom exam and screening schedule can be implemented. It is vital for diabetics to maintain oral health to reduce the risk of infections of the mouth that can spread elsewhere throughout the body.

Health & Wellness

It is estimated that one in three older adults fall each year and this can result in a lengthy hospital stay, a disability, or a change in living arrangements.

Fall Prevention Month: We All Have A Role To Play

Falls are the leading cause of injury in Windsor Essex County and a major cause for concern among seniors in our community with over 90 per cent of fatal falls are among those 65 years of age and up. This November, the Fall Prevention Month campaign encourages Canadian organizations and individuals to come together to coordinate efforts to make a larger impact in preventing falls. It is estimated that one in three older adults fall each year and this can result in a lengthy hospital stay, a disability, or a change in living arrangements (e.g., being transferred to a nursing home or into the home of a family member). Falls can also lead to a decrease in confidence to perform daily tasks, such as walking up and down stairs. The good news is most falls can be prevented. We all have a role to play and during Fall Prevention Month, there are many things you can do to help an older loved one reduce their chance of falling. The first step is to know the six warning signs of falls that can determine if someone is at an increased risk.

Six Warning Signs of Falls

If you are have a family member or loved one over the age of 65, they are at an increased risk of falling if they: • Have had a previous fall in the last six months. • Have a fear that they may fall. • Use recreational drugs or prescription medications like sedatives, fluid pills, blood pressure pills or more than 4 total medications. • Have issues with balance and mobility or are unable to raise from a chair. • Have preexisting medical conditions, stroke or Parkinson’s disease, osteoporosis, arthritis, dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. • Have vision problems such as blurred/double vision, difficulty seeing steps or walking in dim light. If two of the warning signs can be checked off than an this person is at an increased risk for falling and they should speak to their health care provider about ways to lower their risk.

10

November 2017 | Windsor Parent

In addition to knowing the warning signs of a fall the following tips will help you to identify things you can do to reduce the risk of falling: 1. Slow down and take time to be safe. 2. Be physically active for a total of 30 to 60 minutes most days. 3. Have your vision and hearing checked regularly. 4. Discuss your medication and supplements with your doctor/pharmacist. 5. Eat a healthy balanced diet, drink plenty of water & limit your alcohol. 6. When walking outside, be aware of your surroundings and watch where you step. 7. Use safety equipment such as canes, walkers, grab bars and rubber bath mats. 8. Wear non-slip shoes/boots/slippers that fit well and seek treatment for foot problems. 9. Use a night-light and keep a flashlight by your bed. 10. Complete a home safety checklist. Source: Grey Bruce Health Unit, (2009). Reproduced with permission

Food & Nutrition

Dining out with children? Try these age-appropriate strategies the next time you are at a restaurant Dining out at restaurants can be an enjoyable activity and a break from kitchen duties at home. The Canadian Restaurant Food Association has found around 23 per cent of the population dine out once a week. Even busy families want to indulge. However, parents of young children may avoid restaurants because of apprehension about the experience. Getting ready for the restaurant excursion can help families avoid some of the common pitfalls. Patience and planning can help dining out with the family go smoothly. Infants New parents often need a respite from the near-constant demands of infants. Dining out can be one of those breaks. When a babysitter is unavailable or if you’re not yet comfortable leaving a little one with someone else, bringing baby along may be possible. First, find a family-friendly restaurant or try an establishment that has outdoor seating where you can quickly distance yourself from other diners if need be. Time dining out around the baby’s feeding and sleeping schedule. Babies sated by a recent feeding and a relaxing car ride may be more inclined to sleep through your restaurant meal. Just in case, pack an extra bottle or prepare to breastfeed to keep your baby happy.

Toddlers and school age Active children can learn table manners and restaurant behaviour early on through practice. These lessons can open children up to new food experiences and help them grow accustomed to social settings. Do not set your child up to fail by selecting a restaurant that is too fancy or quiet. Save those restaurants for when your company is adults only. A place that is used to noise (and moderate mess) is better. A restaurant that has interesting décor, such as an aquarium, can keep toddlers occupied. But bring along some games, toys and other trinkets to keep their attention. Try playing games, such as counting the packets of sugar or finding people wearing red shirts. Avoid dining out with a tired child, and be prompt in selecting meals and eating. This is not a time to linger, as youngsters’ attention spans and willingness to sit still tend to be minimal. Be prepared to leave with a to-go box if a child proves unruly. Older children Part of the challenge of dining out with older children is holding their attention, but meals can facilitate family conversation and be good for the parent-child dynamic. Set a device-free rule at the table and use the opportunity to converse. Try exotic cuisine or new dining experiences so it is an adventure for all involved.

Did you know that families who eat breakfast together consume more fruit, whole grains and fibre than those who don’t? It’s also a great alternative to family dinners, which can be difficult to coordinate on busy weeknights. But according to a recent Centrum survey, only a third (33 per cent) of Canadians sit down for breakfast as a family during the week. Most of us (65 per cent of Canadians) eat breakfast alone, on the way out the door, or not at all. Eating well in the morning is one way to get on the fast track to an energy-filled day. Here are five tips to help find time for better family breakfasts:

Finding time for family breakfast

1. Sunday is prep day. Meal prep is the key to saving time and eating healthy throughout the week. Prep and freeze fresh breakfast ingredients like fruit on Sunday night for smoother mornings. 2. Pack it up. To make healthy choices even easier when you’re on the go, prepare ready-to-grab snack packs. A cup of Greek yogurt with dried fruit can be divided into reusable containers for every day of the week. Enjoy each snack pack with a multivitamin to help fill nutritional gaps. 3. Use a meal-planning app. These easy-to-use grocery shopping companions take the effort out of meal

planning, automatically generating grocery lists on your phone that you can reference while shopping. 4. Keep it simple. Save the complicated recipes for dinnertime and keep breakfast simple. Overnight oats, smoothies, avocado toast and fruit bowls are healthy options that can be whipped up in no time. 5. Choose wisely. Leave nutritious, ready-to-eat foods out on the counter that family members can grab in a hurry. Aside from fresh fruits and veggies, a handful of nuts is an energy-packed alternative to a piece of toast or sugary granola bar. Source: NewsCanada.com

Jumpstart your mornings with healthy overnight oats Whether you’re hustling kids out the door, trying to hit the gym before work, or darting out to appointments, we’ve all felt the pressure of mornings. A recent survey by Centrum found that while 45 per cent of Canadians say they feel calm when going through their morning routine, four in five still wish they could add one more thing — such as exercise, leisure time or time with their family. “Preparing your breakfast the night before is a great way to give yourself more time in the morning for working out, meditation or just getting in some extra sleep,” says nutrition expert Theresa Albert. “One of my favourite ways to do this is overnight oats, which packs vitamins and fibre in a small, portable package that’s easy to whip up the night before. “Make an oats concoction in a Mason jar and store in your fridge overnight; then simply grab the jar along with a multivitamin on your way out the door.” Oats are high in a fibre called beta glucan that has been shown in some cases to reduce cholesterol and blood sugar. With the addition of a multivitamin (which contains Vitamin B to help in energy metabolism and Vitamin A to help support immune function) and high-protein foods like Greek yogurt or protein powder, this breakfast is an easy way to get your morning started.
