What Parenting Is By Stephanie Renaud B.A., B.Ed.
As human society has evolved, our population has grown and our technological prowess has exploded, things have changed a great deal. The job of parent is the oldest job in the world. Parenthood is about you. It’s about your journey. Notice the word being used here; parenthood rather than parenting. Parenting is action. It’s a verb. Parenthood is a noun. It’s not what you do, it’s who you are. Yet, we have made it largely about others, their opinions, their experience and how we measure up against those images We are more connected than ever and yet we are more isolated than we have ever been from the flesh and blood community around us. And we are more disconnected from ourselves. University of Windsor As hunters and gatherers on the plains of Eurasia we were irrevocably connected to nature. Our communities and habits moved and changed with the seasons, and we had a deep understanding of how our own nature echoed the rhythms of nature around us. Now that our lives are dominated by media, made more comfortable by climate control and driven by the need to work jobs that take us away from our families in order to make enough money to survive we are more disconnected from our nature than we have ever been. We can connect with people on the other side of the world at the click of a mouse, but we probably don’t know the name of most of the people in our neighbourhood. Parenthood thrives on community. It truly does take a village to raise a child, but when the community you are connected to is made up of millions of voices, loudly proclaiming hundreds of differing opinions, how do you connect to your tribe? This comes from knowing yourself. Parenthood is rooted in dropping back into yourself and connecting to your instincts, your own inner knowing that quietly guides you on the best way for you Varsity Sports Camps: to raise your young. May is Rabies Awareness Month!
Do you know how to keep your family and pets safe from this deadly disease?
The weather is warmer, the days are longer, and more people are out walking, running and riding around Windsor-Essex. Animals are looking to enjoy this nice weather too, which means you might cross paths with a raccoon, a stray cat, or even someone out walking their dog. Even though these animals look cute and cuddly, we want to remind you that even a small bite or scratch could put you at risk of getting rabies.
Last year in Ontario, 288 animals tested positive for rabies – a deadly but preventable disease that affects the brain and spinal cord of warm-blooded animals and humans. It is passed through the saliva of animals infected with the disease to other animals and people by bites, scratches, open wounds and cuts, and into eyes, noses and mouths.
6
May/June 2017 | Windsor Parent
Once you start having symptoms of rabies, it is almost always fatal. Even though an animal may not appear to have any symptoms, they can still pass on the rabies virus. That’s why it’s smart to stay away, to avoid getting bitten or scratched. Follow these tips to help keep you and your pets safe: • Stay away from wild, stray or unknown animals. Keep you kids and pets away too! Raccoons, skunks, bats and foxes are the most common carriers of the disease in Canada. • Teach your kids about animal safety. Always ask the owner if it is safe to approach their pet, and never feed a wild animal. • Don’t bother animals if they are sleeping, eating or with their babies. They might become protective and bite. • Keep your garbage sealed to avoid attracting wild animals around your home. • Bat-proof your home in the fall or winter by sealing up entry points, to keep bats from getting into your house. • Vaccinate your pets! It’s the law to keep your pets up-to-date with their rabies vaccines.
• When you’re walking your pet, keep them on a leash and don’t let them run off after other animals. • Keep your pet in a fenced in yard and always keep an eye on them when they are outside.
Even when you’re safe, bites and scratches can still happen. If you are bitten or scratched by an animal, here’s what you should do: • Wash the wound with warm, soapy water for at least 15 minutes and see a healthcare provider immediately. • If the owner of the animal is there, get their contact information. • Report the incident to the Health Unit so they can start an investigation to make sure you are not at risk of getting rabies. Vaccinate your pets, educate yourself and avoid bites and scratches. Protect your family and prevent the spread of rabies. Stay away and stay safe! Find out more about rabies at WECHU.org or by calling 519-258-2146 ext. 4475

Bridging the distance on Mother’s Day
Many modern families are spread out across the country if not the globe. Some people move away from family to further their careers, while others are called upon to care for others. Children may separate from their parents to witness new travel experiences. Distance can make it challenging to spend time together for major holidays and other special occasions – like Mother’s Day. But it can still be special even if Mom lives hundreds or thousands of kilometres away.

Embrace technology – Technology helps break down some of the barriers created by distance. Someone who lives across different time zones can talk through texting or the various social media avenues available on computers, phones and tablets. Video apps like Skype and FaceTime enable you to video chat with others in real time. Come Mother’s Day, connect with mom via such apps so you can watch her open up her gifts. Reconnect with home – If Mom is the one who ventured from home, help her to reconnect with her hometown or another place she feels attached to. Ship her some favourite regional foods that can only be bought in town. Make a photo or video montage of places of interest in town. These little touches of home can mean the world to her. Saturday, June 17, 8 p.m. at the Chrysler Theatre in support of autism awareness and Roots 2 Wings programs By Matt Weingarden
The fourth annual ‘We Will Rock Blue!’ concert in support of autism awareness will feature the inspirational music of Always ABBA on Saturday, June 17 at 8 p.m. at downtown Windsor’s Chrysler Theatre. The annual event is presented by Biz X Magazine and produced by Scott Rawlings of Magic Enterprises Productions. This year, the Roots 2 Wings program, whose mission is to provide youth and young adults living with a disability the opportunities to grow and develop skills to enhance their independence, social skills and quality of life, is the recipient of the proceeds from the concert.
“We are extremely grateful for the donation,” says executive program director Jody Lowrie. “Last year, we received $1300 and were able to purchase a number of items to help our program and clients.” Lowrie says that there are so many individuals with learning disabilities graduating from high school today and really have nowhere to turn afterwards. Roots 2 Wings helps those individuals who wish to be active within the community. Lowrie describes it as a way to have a sense of belonging and kinship. “Events like this really help to promote a group like ours,” she explains. “Given that the need for our service continues to grow rapidly – especially for our day programs – we feel really blessed. Together, we’re making a difference in young people’s lives!”

Did you know? ASD is not a single disorder ASD is now an umbrella term that includes autism, Asperger syndrome, pervasive developmental disorder, childhood disintegrative disorder, and Rett syndrome, according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder, 5th edition (DSM-5) revised in 2013. People with ASD can understand and express emotion Although communication troubles may be present, those with ASD can and do feel emotions. But they may not be able to express these emotions the same way as others do. ASD does not produce carbon-copy symptoms Characteristics of ASD can vary widely from person to person. One person’s limitations may not be present in another. ASD is not just a children’s disease Children who are diagnosed will grow into young people and adults with autism.

Create better-for-you brown bag lunches If your meals for work are starting to feel bland, try a Canadian secret for zipping up sandwiches – mustard. Homemade meals come to life with just a dash of the condiment. Mustard is a staple crop for Canadian farmers. We export it all around the world – to Europe, the United States and Asia. Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada researchers are also working with mustard growers and processors to find new uses for this hearty plant. For example, mustard is used in environmentally friendly pesticides, added to bio-diesel additives, and makes a great natural fertilizer. In the kitchen, try making a tasty dip to pair with omega-3 rich salmon wraps.
