In 1947 Egerton (E.S. Dennis), after serving in the RAAF, settled on his present 90 acre vineyard at McLaren Flat. Egerton initiated the emergence of Dennis Wines in 1971, with the object of converting the high quality grapes produced into premium wine. In 1979 the winemaking and management passed on to his son, Peter, who continues the tradition of producing only premium, quality wine. The family vineyard, ‘Nindethana’, is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Merlot, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. The property is beautifully situated at McLaren Flat at the base of the Mount Lofty Ranges where the soil, climate and rainfall are ideal for the purpose. Since its establishment, Dennis Wines have collected over two hundred medals at capital city and international wine shows, together with other trophies including The Dan Murphy and Bushing King awards (twice) for the best wine in the McLaren Vale Winemakers Exhibition. Only premium quality wine is produced and there is truly a wonderful range of wines to be considered.

A wine leaving its mark on the world will leave its mark on you!
McLaren Vale III Associates pride ourselves on our guarantee: Premium quality wine that is true to label. With the increasing trend by wine consumers to purchase wine before tasting, McLaren Vale III Associates as a premium wine producer is committed to only producing wine that lives up to the McLaren Vale reputation. McLaren Vale III Associates wines are estate grown and the Squid Ink Shiraz is our signature wine. Squid Ink Shiraz is produced from aged vines and consistently scores well into the 90-points range when judged by James Halliday, author of the Australian Wine Companion. Our Shiraz vines produce an outstanding wine of magnificent intensity. The grapes from these vines are almost black blue in colour and when handled leave a dark pigment. Complex flavours of blackberry, chocolate and spice combine with new American Oak, with fine grain tannins that grip until the finish. Once Squid Ink takes a hold of you, you have found a wine to dye for!
Within the Squid Ink range there are a number of styles that will not disappoint. They are all intriguing and have a story to tell from the grapes selected to the choice of Oak and the maturation. Giant Squid Ink Shiraz After sampling some squid ink barrels, there were a few so superior we decided they had to isolate them, to make a Super Premium Reserve Shiraz. The Giant Squid Ink is such a beast it will grip you till the end. Sparkling Squid Ink Shiraz Beautiful purple bubbles that need to be shared and indulged in. A magnificent smooth sparkling Shiraz that just screams celebration and enjoyment.
Descendant of Squid Ink Shiraz Historical release made in a style that dates back to 1903. A style produced in the region for decades, but sadly neglected these days. Enriched with flavours built on fruit, not oak. This lightly wooded Shiraz will surprise and excite anyone who loves a good wine. III Associates and their staff are passionate about what they do and have one goal in mind – to find the wine that suits you. editor’s COMMENTS
welcome “Why has anyone QRW thought of this before?â€? This has been the most common thing people have been saying since the launch of Wine Showcase Magazine. The positive response to the magazine has been astounding and it has been very exciting getting emails from all over the world praising the concept. In addition we have had great feedback and suggestions on other ways to add value for readers as well as for wineries. We have taken those comments on board and made subtle changes to the publication based on the feedback given to us. To make sure the magazine evolves into an even better and more useful publication we have another readership survey available online to coincide with this edition so that we can further improve our content and showcase wines that have been submitted for tasting. We will be ďŹ ne tuning other channels to promote the publication including social media, an improved digital version as well as further HYROYLQJ our website to ensure we utilise the power of the World Wide Web.
For this edition we actually had over 500 wines entered in the tasting and we have featured a selection of the top wines in our tasting section. With so many wines tasted and judged our website upgrade will OLVW many more wines including archived wines available on the :ine 6howcase website. Finally there is nothing like getting a good accolade. Our magazine made it as a ďŹ nalist in the Publishers Australia Excellence Awards in the 2010 Magazine Launch of the <ear category. The entire team at Wine Showcase were very excited to be recognised and nominated as a ďŹ nalist and to be ranked alongside some of the media industry giants in Australia. Canadian Sommelier wins World Sommelier Award 2010 Peter Lehmann Wines is proud to announce Mrs Véronique Rivest as the winner of the Peter Lehmann Wines Shiraz World Sommelier Award at the Association de la Sommellerie Internationale (ASI) Contest for the Best Sommelier of the World in Santiago, Chile. Mrs Rivest is from restaurant Chelsea in the province of Quebec in Canada.

The ASI Contest of the Best Sommelier of the World gathered 51 candidates from all over the world, and each participant undertook a theoretical questionnaire about Shiraz, an essay and the blind tasting of a Shiraz, which was wine from Colomé, Argentina. Mrs Rivest, being the winner of the Peter Lehmann Shiraz World Sommelier Award at the 13th ASI Contest of the Best Sommelier of the World, where she was a semi-finalist, won a Ð10,000 cheque, an invitation to spend a week in the Barossa Valley and was also presented a piece of art by the Austrian artist Gustav Troger. His art has been exhibited in galleries and museums in Europe and the United States. A representative group of Troger’s work belongs to the Hess Art Collection. Upon receiving her prize from Hans Astrom, President of Hess Family Estates in Europe, she said: “It is definitely a great day for me, this Award is fantastic as I have been dreaming of visiting Australia and the Barossa Valley for years. I love this beautiful piece of art. It is good to get cash, but you know what, I am so proud of following Gerard Basset’s footsteps with Peter Lehmann.
I admire him so much. He is simply the best. Let me hope that I will also follow his track to the world title!” Mr Hans Astrom, who presented Mrs Rivest with her prize, commented:“The prize is a strong financial support and help for the sommeliers candidates to continue their quest for more knowledge about Shiraz, its history, wines and producers around the world. However, as wine is a form of art we like to link, introduce the sommeliers to the World of Art.” The overall winner of the ‘Best Sommelier in the World 2010’ was Mr Gèrard Basset from the United Kingdom, and who was the past ‘Peter Lehmann Shiraz World Sommelier Award 2007’ winner in Rhodes, Greece. Mr Franck Moreau, Group Sommelier from the Merivale Group in Sydney, who represented Australia for the first time at the ASI ‘Best Sommelier in the World’ Competition was a semi-finalist at this year’s event. BeneďŹ ts of biodynamic in international arena Derek and Anna Hooper of Cape Jaffa Wines (Mount Benson, Limestone Coast, South Australia) talk about the opportunities and challenges for SMEs trading in the international wine game, and how a “good earthâ€? point of difference can provide a competitive edge Cape Jaffa Wines husband and wife winemaking team Derek and Anna Hooper have also found that sustainable winemaking is not just a avour-of-themonth trend when competing in the international marketplace. Cape Jaffa underwent biodynamic certiďŹ cation in 2005, and after a three year process was granted full biodynamic certiďŹ cation of its 25-hectare vineyards at Mount Benson, a relatively new yet promising coastal wine region 120km west of Coonawarra which shares the same terra rossa over freedraining limestone soil structure. The certiďŹ cation through Australian CertiďŹ ed Organic (ACO) in April 2008 saw Cape Jaffa Wines become one of only four vineyards in the state with this certiďŹ ed status, which includes organic processor certiďŹ cation for its 1000-tonne capacity winery.
Biodynamic agriculture involves a holistic approach to farming based on the idea of the farm itself being considered as a self-sustaining organism, and Derek and Anna have chosen this method of vineyard management in their quest to achieve absolute regionality and varietal expression from their vines. “The wines grown from biodynamic vineyards deďŹ nitely bear a close relationship to the soil and climate that they’ve been grown in,â€? says Derek. “There’s a unique terroir about our coastal site that makes for unmistakable characters in all our wines, from whites with great minerality to peppery shirazes and unmistakable terra rossa cabernets.â€? The Hoopers form part of the booming Australian organic food and farming industry, which is poised to grow by nearly 15% in 2010 to the tune of $430 million, becoming one of the top two growth industries in the country this year. This is being attributed to a number of factors, including increasing awareness of environmental sustainability among consumers . The choice to go down the path of certiďŹ cation, rather than to continue on as a practicising-only biodynamic

producer, was a decision based on a number of factors. Maintaining consumer conďŹ dence was considered important, as the business of organic and particularly biodynamic has been said to be shroud in a veil of mystery and inaccessibility. “Cape Jaffa’s decision to become certiďŹ ed was one largely based on our commitment to consumers. There’s a lot of confusion surrounding biodynamic farming and we’re hoping to change that,â€? says Derek Hooper. Responding well since certiďŹ cation was achieved two years ago, Jaffa’s La Lune sales have given these markets a newfound enthusiasm for Australiangrown premium varieties. www.capejaffawines.com.au Email: dhooper@capejaffawines.com.au

Hong Kong and a close partner with the Hong Kong Government and wine trade to promote Hong Kong as Asia’s wine hub. The Australian Government’s trade and investment promotion agency, the Australian Trade Commission (Austrade) and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) signed an agreement to launch the partnership program at next year’s Fair. “Australia had the largest number of exhibitors at the inaugural Wine Fair in 2008, and this year we almost doubled our size again to have the largest number of exhibitors totalling 65 wineries from across the breadth of Australia,” said Australian Consul-General, Mr Les Luck, who witnessed the signing ceremony. “This is another sign of Australia’s recognition of Hong Kong’s growing reputation as a prime international wine market. Since the signing of the Australia-Hong Kong memorandum of understanding on wine-related business in April 2009, Australian wine industry representatives have intensified the promotion of wine tourism and culture, education and training in Hong Kong’s development as a regional wine hub. Responding to the abolition of wine import duties, Australian wine exports to Hong Kong have increased in the 12 months to June 2009 by 60% by volume, up from 19% in the preceding 12 months. More than 7.4 million litres - or over 820,000 cases were imported into Hong Kong, compared with 4.5 million litres in 2008. HKTDC’s Executive Director Fred Lam welcomes Australia as the partner country for the 2010 Fair, “Hong Kong is steadily emerging as a wine-trading hub for Asia, where consumption of the beverage is expected to grow by 10 per cent to 20 per cent a year for the foreseeable future. Hong Kong alone saw its wine imports soar by 40 per cent in the first nine months of 2009. With growing demand from the mainland and other Asian countries, we expect our wine imports to continue to climb, and we look forward to helping Australia tap into this rich opportunity.”
Many premium Australian wines are already sold to fine restaurants and hotels in Hong Kong, proving to be a good complement to a wide variety of cuisines, in particular Chinese and other Asian dishes. “I am really pleased to announce that Australian wineries have dominated the Awards and Medals at the first Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Wine and Spirit Competition – 12 out of 32 have gone to Australian wines,” said Mr Luck. As well as established names, newto-market wines from all corners of Down Under were introduced at the Fair, as diverse as the Northern Territory’s mango wines and mango liqueur, Tasmanian sparkling white and red varietals as well as special boutique wines from regions as diverse at Margaret River in Australia’s west, to Hunter Valley in the east. “The Australian wine industry, which is the 4th largest wine exporting country, is keen to use next years’ Wine Fair to continue to introduce new and exciting wines and spirits to the sophisticated palates of Hong Kong consumers and to use Hong Kong as a platform to further develop our markets in mainland China and the rest of Asia,” said Mr Luck. 39th Consecutive Vintage of Bobbie Burns Shiraz! First vintaged in 1970, the Bobbie Burns Shiraz has always been a wine of no compromise with respect to quality and style. The objective of brothers Malcolm Campbell, viticulturist and Colin Campbell, winemaker has always remained constant and focused. “To grow the best possible shiraz fruit and to ensure the natural fruit flavours are protected and enhanced to produce a unique and long lived shiraz which
fully demonstrates the potential of the Rutherglen region.” In the ‘60’s the Australian wine industry was still coming to grips with the need for change from the fortified focus of the previous century to table wines of structure and quality. With a few notable exceptions such as Colin Preece at Great Western and Max Schubert in the Barossa, winemakers were struggling to produce red wines with true fruit characters and balance. Rutherglen, with almost the identical climate to Great Western and marginally cooler than the Barossa, logically should be able to produce equally appealing shiraz wines. This quest became the focus for the young Campbell brothers. At this time Colin Campbell was completing his winemaking training at Roseworthy and developing an understanding of the red wines of the northern Rhone, Hermitage in particular. He was impressed by the similarities in summer heat and sunshine between the Rhone and Rutherglen and recognised the advantage Rutherglen possessed with its long, warm and generally dry autumn compared to the often humid ripening conditions of the Rhone. Malcolm and Colin, identified the vineyards of greatest potential at Rutherglen and began a management practice to maximise fruit quality ahead of quantity. Forty years of development and refinement have continually enhanced this objective. Colin studied the techniques employed by the Rhone winemakers and quickly identified their practice of using fully ripe fruit and little oak, indeed many used only matured oak barrels and larger barrels, in the maturation process. The results they achieved were wines with fruit and supple flavours evident in their younger years together with the capacity to age gracefully and in harmony for decades. “The Aglianico grape variety thrives in dry climates with lots of sunshine and we’re sure it will have a very promising future in McLaren Vale,” Richard said. Aglianico originated in Greece before being brought to Italy by Greek settlers and the wine is characterised by its trademark deep garnet colour.
A New Italian in Mclaren Vale At Pertaringa Wines in McLaren Vale, a new Italian variety is promising to be an ideal match with both the climate and iconic Australian meats such as kangaroo and lamb. Aglianico is a red grape variety from the Southern Italian regions of Campania and Basilicata, and Pertaringa’s plantings is the first of the variety in McLaren Vale. The first vintage of the Aglianico is already showing great potential in the barrel with firm tannins and high acidity, both trademarks of this variety. “It will be especially well matched with gamey meats such as kangaroo and rich meats such as lamb,” Pertaringa’s Senior Winemaker Shane Harris (pictured) said. “In short, it’s a perfect match with the classic Australian cuisine!” In addition to being a winemaker, Shane is a qualified chef and very passionate about food and wine, and how they perform together. “Australians are getting increasingly sophisticated in their food and wine matching, and I think it’s important to start giving them other varieties than the good old Shiraz and Cabernet to play around with,” Shane said. Aglianico is one of several new varieties that have recently been or will be added to Pertaringa’s McLaren Vale vineyards. Pertaringa Vineyard Manager Richard Leask is looking forward to observing the new varieties over the upcoming vintages. 14

“Other new and exciting varieties in the vineyard include Tannat and Nero d’Avola, and it will be very interesting to see how these will perform in the next few years,” Richard said. “Tannat is from south western France and we already have some of this intensely coloured red variety in barrel from the 2009 vintage, which will be released later this year.” “Another great food wine, Nero d’Avola, will be our new resident Sicilian in the vineyard this year.” Pertaringa is an award-winning boutique winery located in the foothills of McLaren Vale. Seppeltsfield - 100 years in the making On Saturday 1st May, Seppeltsfield Wines released the latest vintage of Australia’s rarest wine, the 1910 Para 100 year old Tawny. Seppeltsfield is the only winery in the world to release a single vintage wine aged in barrel for 100 years, every year. The 1910 is available in a 375ml (A$975) numbered bottle with hand made wooden display case and signed certificate of authenticity, and in a 100ml bottle (A$299) also with hand made wooden case. Only approximately 200 litres are available for sale each year. The 1910 marks a special release as it’s the first time in over 25 years that the 1888 Seppeltsfield historic Gravity Flow Winery has been substantially used for vintage, including the wine destined for release in 2110. For the 2010 vintage over 1600 tonnes of premium red grapes, principally from the Seppeltsfield vineyard and wider Barossa region were crushed and fermented in the old cellar. Winemaker Fiona Donald explains “The cellar works on gravity flow; at the top of the hill trucks bring in grapes and tip them into the receival hopper to be crushed. Must, juice and skins, then flows into the tanks for fermentation.” Eighty five of the 120 cement tanks, in the cellar, were upgraded and lined with stainless steel this year. Each tank holds up to seven tonnes. “The system has turned out fantastic results” she said. Also released at the beginning of the month was the little brother to the 100 year old, the 21 year old Para Vintage Tawny – 1989.

SPOTLIGHT ON
Australian Wines in Hong Kong The Hong Kong International Wine & Spirit Fair squarely placed a spotlight on Partner Country Australia.
T
his year Australia was the partner country representative of 2010 Hong Kong International Wine & Spirit Fair. There was a large presence of Australian Wineries and Winemakers exhibiting at the Australian Wine Pavilion stand that featured world-class, elegant chardonnay and cool-climate pinot noir, as well as the many and varied styles of regional shiraz, majestic cabernet and an exciting array of alternative varietals and blends. The Australian Trade Commission and Wine Australia, presented the new global branding A+ Australian Wine. The team from Wine Australia also presented Australia’s rich history with the vine which spans more than 200 years, and filled with the room with tales of courage and winemaking across generations. Among the many Australian activities at the fair, a key highlight was the

Vino Syrah/Shiraz Forum. There were also many interactive seminars introducing the different wine-producing regions of Australia, and the winetasting sessions and workshops allowing participants to learn more about how Australian wines abound in character, expression and interest that can rival any wine-producing country in the world.
Total wine imports into Hong Kong increased by 72 per cent in the first nine months of 2010, reaching a value of HK$4.67 billion,” said Benjamin Chau, Deputy Executive Director of the HKTDC. “In addition, the city is now the secondlargest centre for wine auctions in the world, overtaking London and now only behind New York.”
The fair at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre was organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC). The nations with the largest overseas presence at the fair included Australia, France, Italy and Spain, which are represented by a combined total of more than 370 exhibitors, more than double last year’s figure.
Some 65 buying missions from 41 countries and regions were on hand, representing nearly 2,000 buyers from companies such as Australia’s ILG Supplier Co-operative, France’s Millesima, India’s Sula Selections and major chain stores such as Lawson Inc from Japan and LOTTE from South Korea. The event is something that the trade buyer or distributor looking for Australian wines should consider placing the date in their annual calendar of things to do.
“Since the elimination of duties on wine and beer in 2008, local wine-related business has experienced robust growth.

SYRAH//Shiraz Rob Geddes MW asks “Is there any place in Australia that can’t grow Syrah/Shiraz?”
I
s there any place in Australia that can’t grow syrah/shiraz? Certainly there are exceptions but shiraz has shown magnificent ability to adapt to the needs of the industry and the dry, warm Australian climate to consistently produce a distinctive big burst of recognisable flavour wherever it is grown. Australian shiraz delivers like a Formula One driver in their prime with great lines and strength all the way to the finish. In Australia shiraz has great style, a sense of place and occasion. It is like a great actor; able to perform on different stages in different roles and still call them all their own.
experiences creating wines that taste of the place they were born. While Australia is an extraordinary land of contrasts – the oldest continent with the oldest wine growing soils – it also one of the relatively (at 200 years) youngest wine industries. The lines of shiraz are well defined with structured abundant red and black berry fruit and pepper/clove spice flavours that continue evenly along the palate. Its ability to produce wines with length of flavour has been critical to its ongoing success.
For this reason alone Australia is a lucky country where syrah/shiraz, like so many other migrants has been able to put down roots and achieve personal bests across a range of climates and winemakers.
Such is the sweep of shiraz that fashion has always taken a role in its identity, first as variety for fortification and ports which, in turn, its identity has now become increasingly attached to old vine bottlings and an exciting number of cool climate regions where the spiciness is increasingly apparent.
The success of shiraz comes down a mix of factors including the tough and robust nature of shiraz and love of sunshine, its amiable and hard working nature able to cope with a range of cross country
The trend to pick riper, above 14%, gives softer tannins and has given us ripe plump flavours that can sometimes struggle to find length and finish past the middle of the tongue. The great
shiraz delivers on length of fruit and tannin on finish that allows you to enjoy the wine for minutes after swallowing. Shiraz has a long history and strong regional characters, making a regional tour worthwhile to explore the nuances of this great grape and its memorable wines. With the oldest shiraz in the world the Barossa Valley is a fine place to start and with the tradition of blending between vineyards and sub regions. St Hallett Old Block is made from a selection of the finest old blocks of vines between 60 to 100 years of age across the four corners of the Barossa. A favourite with collectors this wine delivers complexity, seamless tannins and elegance and is less ponderous than some of its cousins. A different take comes form the Kalleske family at Greenock end where they have been farming their vineyard, first planted in the 1850’s, organically for over 20 years. The ripe rich intense blackberry fruit of their Greenock Shiraz achieves a seamless intense power that makes them one of the most exciting new wineries, even if they have been grape growers for over 130 years. The Adelaide Hills to the south of the Barossa have been home to new generation of grape growers led in part by Shaw & Smith who produce wines of immaculate freshness and ripe blackberry fruit with licks of sage and black pepper spice marking the detail that makes them different from their Barossa neighbours. South of the Adelaide Hills, McLaren Vale in South Australia is another region with abundant fruit and soft tannins creating mouth filling wines abounding cherry and black berry fruit and soft sweet tannins. These are some of the most supple of ripe styled wines such D’Arenberg Dead Arm Shiraz. Western Australia shiraz while not as mouth filling as South Australia show fresh, very food friendly red berries and cracked white pepper when young with a refreshing acidity. To appreciate how much brighter, more elegant they are
try Howard Park Leston Vineyard Margaret River Shiraz. The Yarra Valley adjacent to Melbourne is home to the flip side of the South Australian style with a medium body and more spice and savoury flavours adorning the red and black berry fruit. A nice try is the De Bortoli Estate Reserve Syrah showing that not all Australian shiraz is the same. Hunter Valley shiraz has more moods than the sea. Don’t be deceived by these wines such as Brokenwood Graveyard Shiraz. This medium bodied savoury spiced cooked plum and clove wine wrapped in ripe fruit with a profound velvety medium full-bodied texture. The strength of regional characters and local accents in Australian shiraz means it is truly liquid geography with many the nuances to this great grape and its memorable wines just waiting for your glass.

wine showcase TASTINGS
tasting HOW DO WE RATE AND TASTE? Australian Wine Showcase Magazine tastings provide an independent review of wines currently available or ready to become available in the USA, UK/ Europe and Asian Markets. Wine is very different from any run-ofthe-mill consumer product. There are not many consumer products that are rated and reviewed as extensively as wine. The only three that come to mind that are similar to wine are music, movies, and food. All of these clearly fall into the ‘subjective’ category and their enjoyment is truly personal. Wine critics will admit that wine is a subjective experience. The 100 point system makes sense from a scoring point of view. Most consumers will not be able to pick the difference in 2 or 3 percentage points but will give the wine buyer an accurate bench mark to make selections from with other factors such as price point. Several writers use stars or symbols, many score out of five. The Australian show circuit uses the 20 point system and award Gold, Silver or Bronze medals. There is no real right or wrong way to score. The true purpose of a score is for the reader to gauge a professional critic’s overall qualitative placement of a wine. We have chosen to use the 100 point system that the American critic Robert Parker has used for many years because our research has found that many overseas buyers prefer this point system and we prefer to give them the tools that they like to use.
24
It is also important to consider the description of the wine’s style, personality, and potential. No scoring system is perfect, but a system that provides for flexibility in scores, if applied by the same taster without prejudice, can quantify different levels of wine quality and provide the wine buyer with a professional judgment.
A MORE DETAILED DESCRIPTION 90-100 is equivalent to an A and is given only for an outstanding or special effort. Wines in this category are the very best produced of their type. There is a big difference between a 90 and 99, but both are top marks. 80-89 is equivalent to a B in school and such a wine, particularly in the 85-89 range, is very, very good; many of the wines that fall into this range often are great value as well. 70-79 represents a C, or average mark, but obviously 79 is a much more desirable score than 70. Wines that receive scores between 75 and 79 are generally pleasant, straightforward wines that lack complexity, character, or depth. If inexpensive, they may be ideal for uncritical quaffing. Below 70 is a D or F, depending on where you went to school. For wine, it is a sign of an imbalanced, flawed, or terribly dull or diluted product that will be of little interest to the discriminating consumer.
THE JUDGING & SCORING SYSTEM Our judging panels will sip, swirl, taste and spit under blind tasting conditions so
there can be no biases. A blind tasting simply means that the judges don’t know what wines they are tasting, the flight of glasses are placed on the individual judges tables and each of the glasses simply have a number on them and the bottles are out of sight. We use three judges for each flight, plus a chairperson, all with experience in wine and known for their good palates. The final rating is the average score of the three judges. We ensure the wines are tasted at the correct temperature and environment and clean glasses. In terms of awarding points, the 100 point scoring system gives every wine a base of 50 points. The wine’s general colour and appearance merit up to 5 points. Since most wines today are well made, thanks to modern technology and the increased use of professional oenologists, they tend to receive at least 4, often 5 points. The aroma and bouquet merit up to 15 points, depending on the intensity level and dimension of the aroma and bouquet as well as the cleanliness of the wine. The flavour and finish merit up to 20 points, and again, intensity of flavours, balance, cleanliness, and depth and length on the palate are all important considerations when giving out points. Finally, the overall quality level or potential for further evolution and improvement— aging—merits up to 10 points.

NEW GENERATION Barossa Barons The Barons of the Barossa – a fraternity of senior wine identities formed 33 years ago to promote the wine, food and spirit of the Barossa region – feared the stature and purpose of their select order was waning. So they did something about it. BY DAVID SLY

T
he 50 Barons remain an iconic group, noted for their generosity as significant fundraisers and sponsors within the district, but the medieval-style gowns, pageantry and rigmarole that surrounded formal Barons events had set it a distance apart from a new generation of Barossa winemakers. Something had to be done to keep enthusiasm for the Barons alive, so a new style of event was organised – a wine taste-off between the custodians of old style and the hot young winemakers of the Barossa. In essence, this event held during winter – irreverently called ‘Clarifying Claret, or a Paler Shade of White’ – pulled the Barons back to the raw essence of wine appreciation. It was also designed to attract a young crowd, to encourage their participation within Barons events, and it worked. About 60 people – a liberal sprinkling of 20and 30-somethings amongst silvering hair and shiny pates – gathered for a candlelit supper in the cosy Angaston Scout Hall (the Barons funded a funky
re-painting in shades of tangerine, yolk and emerald), while tasting the wines of internationally renowned winemakers beside young guns, to compare how each wine variety is approached by the different generations. What the audience of tasters found is that the philosophical winemaking differences were minimal. Like the veterans, the young winemakers have a deep knowledge and respect for the mature vines of the Barossa and read them diligently to understand what wine style best suits the fruit. If anything, the young winemakers are the greatest advocates for the oldest traditions; small batch processing of fruit, basket pressing, open fermenters, minimal intervention. It’s the same dedicated, hands-on approach that set the Barossa alight as a world-class producer in the mid-1980s through the likes of Charlie Melton, Rockford’s Robert O’Callaghan and St Hallett Winery – and it’s alive and thriving in the hands of a new league of exciting young Barossa winemakers. >
OPPOSITE The
golden glow of the Barossa Valley.
RIGHT Despite the richness of their wine knowledge and stature in the region, the medievalstyle pageantry of formal Barons events was evidently out of touch with younger winemakers.

SHIRAZ Kym Teusner works at Rolf Binder Winery, but also has his own wine label that focuses on old vine fruit and has taken on a cult status. He’s a bit bemused by all the attention: “I’m just making the booze that I want to make.” With such a simple philosophy, Kym’s not afraid to do things differently – the Teusner 2005 Albert Shiraz (cork, $45) has about 3 per cent of mataro added to shiraz sourced from a variety of old vines at different sites, all aged between 45 and 90 years, providing a lifted, gamey perfume of blackberries that is typical of mataro. It has also worked to take some of the sweet edge off big, powerful shiraz, ensuring great smoothness and richness through a long, luscious palate. Standing beside Kym, long-time Barossa Baron Stephen Henschke was pouring his 2005 Mt Edelstone Shiraz (cork, $110), which shows the testament of significant work done in the Mt Edelstone

vineyard at Eden Valley, where a change in vine trellising has ensured more consistent ripeness and peppery intensity of the fruit. On this point, Stephen and Kym were in complete agreement: Vineyard management is the distinguishing feature that separates the good from great Barossa shiraz. CLARET Young guys in the Barossa have an unlikely passion for old traditions, such as using the term claret to describe full-bodied red wines. Al Ashmead is a particular fan of claret, and uses it proudly to describe the classic cabernetfuelled blend that has been named in tribute to his mum – Elderton Wines’ 2004 Ode to Lorraine (cork, $40). It’s a blend of 60 per cent cabernet (an unsung Barossa hero) with 30 per cent shiraz and 10 per cent merlot, providing a luscious meld of rich berries, a prickle of pepper and molten chocolate. The result is an enticing mix of power
and refined elegance. “It’s a complete wine,” Al says with justified satisfaction. Jaysen Collins took a different tack with his vision of claret by showcasing Massena Wines’ 2005 The Hound Dog (cork, $35 from cellar door), a 100 per cent durif produced by the small wine brand Jaysen started with fellow young turk Dan Standish. Asked by various growers to plant four plots of durif in 2001, Jaysen delightedly reports that the vines are now producing outstanding fruit, though vastly different in style to the famed durif from Rutherglen in northern Victoria, which tends to be overly concentrated and tannic. By comparison, Massena’s durif is more lush and ripe, with its rich flavours of blackberry and cocoa kept in check by restrained, fine-grained tannins. FORTIFIED Andrew Seppelt is part of the Seppelt dynasty of winemakers but is forging his own path with his small Murray Street

Wines label based in Greenock. As a Seppelt, he grew up tasting some of the finest fortified wines; when it came to making his own wines, he felt it natural that a classic style of “vintage port” (only Portuguese producers can use this term now) should be among them – despite the style being out of commercial favour. “I really don’t understand why it’s been forgotten,” says Andrew. “It’s fun to make; it’s fun to drink.” In his first vintage, Andrew made one barrel of fortified and it all sold within four weeks. As a consequence, there’s a bit more of the Murray Street Vineyards 2005 Shiraz VP (cork, 500ml for $40) available at his cellar door. Barossa Baron Dean Kraehenbuhl, a former fortified winemaker at Seppeltsfield, who was pouring wines at the function that he had made at Seppelt, was suitably impressed that the great Barossa tradition of excellent fortified winemaking is being pursued with such passion by a new generation. GRENACHE Perhaps grenache represents the truest artisan winemaking expression of the Barossa, such is the diversity of style and flavour possibility that this grape variety presents. Geoff Schrapel, proprietor/
winemaker of Bethany Winery, had two vintages of grenache on offer, showing the great effect vintage conditions can have on such wine. 2004 Bethany Grenache (screw cap, $16) was picked late into a cool vintage, and the longer ripening period produced berries with dark, deep flavour intensity and earthy, savoury notes. In striking comparison, the 2005 Bethany Grenache (screw cap, $16) ripened early – it’s lighter, fruitier, more simplistic, fragrant with raspberries and lighter in structure, and Bethany’s UK customers have responded by saying this is the style of grenache they like best. Julie Campbell, who arrived in the Barossa two years ago from Rutherglen, took an entirely different tack with the 2006 Turkey Flat Grenache (screw cap, $22), presenting big ripe fruit in a big, bold fashion, allowing noticeable black pepper and dark spice to show through in the power-packed palate. With such a big wine, Julie has managed a rather careful balancing act; there’s a fair lashing of oak influence, and alcohol is high at 15 per cent, but it’s all kept in check with drying tannins. It’s hard to believe this big brute comes from the same neighbourhood as Bethany, let alone the same grape variety.
RIESLING Wayne Ahrens, a grapegrower in Eden Valley, started making his own wines under the Smallfry label only 18 months ago, and the 2006 Smallfry Riesling (screwcap, $18 from cellar door) shows his clear understanding of the distinctive fruit quality and character of that region. It’s bone dry and flinty, with pronounced natural acids giving great length to the clean, sharp flavours of lime and a trace of honey. Wayne said that showing his young wines while standing beside iconic riesling maker John Vickery – who was pouring rare museum samples of the 1978 DWH23 Leo Buring and 1994 Richmond Grove rieslings that he created – was a humbling experience, mindful that John’s technical experimentation from the 1960s was pivotal in producing cleaner, crisper riesling wines. “John’s work paved the way for us guys to make better wines more easily,” says Wayne. “We understand that; we appreciate that. And that’s the Barossa in a nutshell – we keep putting the benefits of our history in a bottle.”

winery profile TWO HANDS WINES
Against the grain Two Hands Wines had an international audience eagerly buying its Barossa Shiraz long before it had a winery. BY DAVID SLY
T
his caused a minor ruckus; it rubbed against the grain of tradition for outsiders to create a new Barossa wine label around marketing strategies ahead of nurturing vineyards. When powerful US wine critic Robert Parker went into rapture about Two Hands wines, locals viewed the accolades with a mixture of envy and distain. Some bristled further when Two Hands bought Barossa land – not to establish vines, but to build a new winery, processing fruit brought in from six grape growing regions.
Two Hands owners Michael Twelftree and Richard Mintz don’t mind that they aren’t following tradition; they want a modern wine business making top quality wine that the world wants to buy, and they’re serious about being successful. “We don’t tout this brand being about heritage and 100-year-old vines, like many others do in the Barossa. Two Hands can be summed up by this new winery,” says Richard with a sweeping gesture that takes in the $3 million production facility at Marananga that opened 18 months ago.
“It’s a modern, efficient business built on winemaking tradition. We don’t own vines, but we buy the best possible fruit. We don’t try to do everything, we specialize in wines that we do very well. We’re market focused and marketing based. And we believe in quality without compromise – that has become our mantra, and I think it’s a good one.” The two owners came from outside the wine industry, yet have an intimate knowledge of how it operates. previously managed Tanunda cooperage Heinrich and forged relationships with many key Barossa winemakers and grape growers. His friend Michael, a builder by trade, was an avid wine collector who started a business selling premium Australian wines to an interested US market. Late one night at a party, the pair hatched an idea to start making their own wine to capitalise on the thriving export markets Michael had established. They started buying fruit from selected growers across several premium Shiraz districts, and in 2000 Two Hands Wines went into production.

“We started with a bottle of wine and figured out what was required to sell it,” says Richard. “We didn’t need vineyards. Any winery can buy grapes from any region and put their label on the bottle – but what you select to carry your brand is what matters.”
Victoria, and the Barossa to produce an astounding array of 12 wines featuring Shiraz, pitched at three different quality levels and price points. “The world views this as Australia’s great wine,” says Richard. “We’re showing just what can be done with it.”
Encouraged by growing international respect for premium quality Australian Shiraz, Richard and Michael decided to specialise in that variety. They are now sourcing Shiraz grapes from McLaren Vale, Clare, Langhorne Creek, Padthaway, Heathcote in
Parcels of grapes from each district are kept separate, with Two Hands winemaker Matt Wenk aiming for regional differences to be pronounced in the finished wines. It requires a restrained hand in winery practices, particularly with oak treatment.
winery profile TWO HANDS WINES
“Because I came from a coopering company, people expected Two Hands to be an oak slut. Actually, it’s the opposite,” says Richard. And here, yet again, Two Hands runs at odds with the prevailing Barossa fashion for Shiraz to wear the heavy influence of American oak. “I guess we just see things differently,” he offers with a wry smile. Despite this difference of opinion, Richard is delighted that Two Hands Wines can call the Barossa its home. Its cellar door facility opened in December 2003 – a contemporary showroom fashioned within an 1880 cottage that hadn’t been lived in for 40 years. The classic stone building has been cast in a modern light; redgum benches, lots of soft lighting, deep maroon walls to offset high white ceilings. And they’ve planted Shiraz vines on part of the 10ha property, with more to follow. They’re a showpiece at present; Richard hopes they will eventually be of a standard to feature in Two Hands wines.

“Shiraz experience” tastings are offered, with food platters, for a fee. “If people want to get serious about tasting the wine, so are we.” Until recently, high demand overseas for Two Hands wines had left precious few bottles in Australia. Increased output has finally seen an Australian distributor appointed and more bottles available at premium bottle shops, though Richard still likes it best when curious tasters make a pilgrimage to the Barossa cellar door. “To come here is to understand why we want to do things differently,” he says. “We probably won’t attract the traditional consumer, but that’s fine. There’s plenty of room for us to exist too, even if not so many people know about us – yet.”
The transformation didn’t come cheaply but Richard and Michael invested heavily because they can sense the potential; they know from selling wine overseas that Barossa ranks first and foremost in the minds of people who buy Australian wine. And yet Richard is highly critical of what he sees as an underperforming region. “This is the garden of Eden, but too many people are complacent about it. The potential is limitless, but nothing quite hits the mark for wine tourism.” Hence, Two Hands wants to set a different benchmark for cellar door experiences. They change visitors $5 for a tasting session (redeemable against purchases) but carefully explain and pour wines from across the dense portfolio.

NOT YOUR USUAL SUSPECTS Not the usual suspects On the surface it may seem that the six larrikin Australian winemakers who call themselves the ‘New Generation Hunter Valley’ are just making wine for fun. BY CAMILLA BARLOW
Y
ou would be right in thinking this, however it goes much deeper than that. In fact, these six blokes are some of Australia’s most passionate, experienced and capable winemakers who are making a real difference for the Hunter Valley region and the Australian wine industry. Pictured above, David Hook (David Hook Wines), Andrew Thomas (Thomas Wines), Rhys Eather (Meerea Park), Nick Paterson (Mistletoe), Mike De Iuliis (De Iuliis) and Andrew Margan (Margan Family Wines) make up the New Generation Hunter Valley and each 56

member of this group has their own individual winemaking style, yet they all have the same drive and ambition to make quality wines which stand out from the rest and to get the Hunter Valley region back onto the world’s vinous radar. The name ‘New Generation Hunter Valley’ is not supposed to imply youth. In fact, Andrew Thomas of Thomas Wines admits that some of the younger members of the Hunter Valley winemaking community call them the “New Geriatrics”. Instead, the brand symbolises the new style of winemakers who are coming through the ranks that aren’t afraid to think outside
the square when it comes to winemaking approaches and techniques. Each member of the New Generation Hunter Valley are making leaps and bounds both on a local and global scale and James Halliday, arguably Austraila’s most coveted and respected wine critic, has these guys on his radar. In Halliday’s 2011 Wine Companion each of the New Generation Hunter Valley members were given a 5 star rating – the best possible review one could hope for in times where there is such an oversupply of grapes, its easy to get lost amongst the rest. However for these guys, going unnoticed

would be considered an unusual notion, with their larrikin style and laid back attitude naturally setting them apart from the norm. On Friday 15th October it became clear the impact these guys are making on their home turf when they held a wine tasting in Sydney’s CBD. Within four hours of the event going on sale, it was sold out. Above and beyond anyone’s expectations, at least 450 consumers eagerly rushed through the doors for what was promoted as ‘Not Your Usual Wine Tasting’, a concept that was thought up over a beer at the local pub in the Hunter Valley, and inspired by the verity that these guys weren’t your ‘usual suspects’ in the world of winemaking, all with the clever marketing ploy that played on the imagery from the famous yet elusive film ‘The Usual Suspects’. The New Generation winemakers did not want this tasting to have stale corporate event image that a lot of wine tastings tend to carry and a lot of the momentum and anticipation for the event was created purely via social networking sites such as Facebook - see facebook. com/newgenerationhuntervalley. Fans from far and wide were joining up within minutes of their social network debut, demonstrating the huge reach the group have, and the demand for wine events which are out of the ordinary. The overwhelming response to the ‘Not Your Usual Wine Tasting’ event has motivated the New Generation Hunter Valley to take their brand to the world. In May 2011, there are plans for
a ‘Caravan of Courage’-style road show, starting in Melbourne and up through the east coast of Australian towns and communities to showcase what they do best, eventually culminating at the Audi Noosa Food and Wine Festival. This activity will see the ‘suspects’ in the minds and on the palates of wine loving Australian’s in regional and coastal areas whom wouldn’t otherwise have had the opportunity to get to know this crew of lovable louts. Not only is this venture beneficial for the New Generation members, it will also potentially bring a larger demographic from further afield to the Hunter Valley, boosting tourism in the area, and capturing a new pool of fans. Although not every member of the New Generation Hunter Valley export their individual brand, collectively they export their chart topping wines to countries such as Japan, the USA, Canada, Germany, The Netherlands, Hong Kong, China, the Philippines and the Maldives. “Export depends on building good relationships between the importer and wholesaler, which at times can be difficult” says David Hook, owner and winemaker of David Hook Wines “My opinion is that to build your brand
internationally, exporting into countries with an established wine culture is essential, as well as countries that have a strong importation history”. Rhys Eather, winemaker for Meerea Park and part owner with his brother Garth, intends to see their exports grow in areas such as Europe and the USA, while on the other hand, Mistletoe wines will only be found in Australia at the picturesque Mistletoe Cellar Door in Pokolbin in the Hunter Valley. For Andrew Thomas and Mike De Iuliis Canada is a destination where they are keen to stay and build their brand presence, while Margan is a name which is synonymous with the Hunter Valley and great Australian winemaking and will remain so indefinitely and around the world. Although it is clear that each member of the New Generation Hunter Valley have different visions for their brands on a global and local scale respectively, it is clear that the overriding focus for them as a group is to send out a message which will create a consistent brand image of the Hunter Valley as a region capable of producing world class quality quintessential wines which are true expressions of their respective terroir.
