RETROFITTING FOR GROUP HOUSING VENNICE ANGELLA L AC16UAR113
ABSTRACT
The refurbishment of existing building allows remarkable improvements in performance even through mature and offtheshelf technologies.
Retrofitting is the process of changing technology or adding entities to the building that ultimately result in the addition of strength of the existing structure without its demolition.
With better understanding of seismic design on structures and on the crucial experiences from the recent large earthquakes, the need of retrofitting is in high demand. Housing is responsible for around 27% of the carbon emissions, so buildings of all ages and styles have a part to play in terms of energy efficiency. Making a building more sustainable while completing the retrofit could attract more higher-paying tenants, which would cause a greater appreciation by the time the owners plan to sell.
There is a Distinction Between Retrofit and Renovation Marion Baeli, defines renovation as being smartening things up to make them look
good and dealing with the top 3mm of construction. Retrofit on the other hand is about getting under the skin of things and sorting them out at a fundamental, architectural and building physics level.
There is no ‘one size fits all' when it comes to retrofit.
AIM focus
• To improve seismic strength of existing and damaged or undamaged structures. • To improve over the original strength or energy efficiency when evaluation of the building before is insufficient. • Understanding technical and the aesthetic importance What to Consider -------
OBJECTIVES To study about the lateral strength in one or both directions, by reinforcement or by increasing wall areas or the number of walls and columns. Exploring various techniques to Give unity to the structure by providing a proper connection between its resisting elements. Improving the energy performance of the building.
To study the structure considering only Dead Load and Live Load METHODS . examples
Seismic Retrofitting Approaches Retrofit construction of URM buildings consists of several approaches, including securing the structure to its foundation, joining building elements to avoid independent movement of various parts of the structure, and steel bracing systems. Soft-Story I Non-Ductile Concrete I Tilt-Up Steel Moment Frame I Unreinforced Masonry
IN TERMS OF ENERGY EFFICIENCY Consideration
External Insulation
Internal Wall Insulation
Cavity Wall Insulation
Keeping it warm and dry and therefore less likely to suffer moisture problems.
The process can be quite slow and be impacted by various pipes, electrics and other services.
If you have cavity walls then filling them can be a good option. a coastal property with porous bricks, where it might not be an appropriate choice.
SCOPE
The repair and retrofitting strategies set forth in this manual are applicable only for the residential houses that falls in repair and retrofitting.
uninhabitable
Applicability The study mentioned will be ready-to-use designs for all structural & components, but some provisions mentioned are set as advisory measures. Limitations The repair and retrofitting strategies are only for damaged non-engineered residential buildings.
THE
SITE
NHB committee inspected the housing units last year and declared that they were no longer safe for living. Where the demolition and rebuilding the new units are not happening, the alternative way will be Retrofitting. The Tamil Nadu Housing Board dwelling units awaiting demolition at the Collectorate complex in Coimbatore.
Michelle Ho’s proposal Ho's proposal would adapt the pre-existing Central Hill Estate in south London A new wooden frame would be mounted onto the remaining social housing structure and fitted with customisable housing units. "By introducing new living spaces into the estate and building over the existing roof, the housing density can be enhanced," the designer
retrofitting
Flow Identify the performance requirements for the existing structure to be retrofitted and draft an overall plan from inspection through selection of retrofitting method, design of retrofitting structure and implementation of retrofitting work.
Inspect the existing structure to be retrofitted. Based on the results of the inspection, evaluate the performance of the structure and verify that it fulfills performance requirements. If the structure does not fulfill performance requirements, and if continued use of the structure through retrofitting is desired, proceed with design of the retrofitting structure. Select an appropriate retrofitting method and establish the materials to be used, structural specifications and construction method. Evaluate the performance of the structure after retrofitting and verify that it will fulfill performance requirements. If it is determined that the retrofitting structure will be capable of fulfilling performance requirements with the selected retrofitting and construction methods, implement the retrofitting work.
