WINFREE MEMORIAL BAPTIST CHURCH

’Round the Grounds September/October 2011 This has been one of the best summers ever at Winfree! • VBS was outstanding! • Sports Camp had the largest number of participants ever and pulled it all off even with a last minute change of venue. • Rusty and the youth group worked at a missions camp for a week, primarily assisting with the housing for disabled people. • We have had some incredible days in worship, ranging from a touching Lord’s Supper to one of the largest crowds of the year at 11:00 service . . . in August! • God continues to send us guests every week, many of them young families. Now, as we move into the fall, I hope that you will pay particular attention to these two events.

1 - Our Spiritual Directions and Vision Process Someone asked me, “Is something wrong?” No. In fact I believe we here at Winfree are doing a lot of things right. But, just like it is wise to have a physical check every few years, even when we are feeling healthy, we ought to make sure that as a church we are on target with God’s purposes. So we have been praying and preparing. On Sept. 23-25 we will interact with each other and a team of external coaches. This will lead to the identification of our strengths and some specific recommendations for our future. Please look at the article inside for more detail. But most of all, let’s join together in prayer and then engage in the process.

2 - Revive, Renew, Renovate (RRR) This fall we will shift into high gear with the next phase of our renovation of the current facilities. We do a great job of caring for our facilities and our sanctuary is beautiful. But after 23 years there are some items needing attention. This phase will primarily focus on the sanctuary building. In order to do this renovation, in October we will encourage each other to make pledges towards the building fund. I hope that you will pray and respond faithfully to the guidance God gives you about this. Watch for more information about the renovation plans and the fundraising. Winfree, thanks for being who you are!

hip Sunday School & Disciples It’s Time! September is here, and with it comes many fresh opportunities to achieve more completely what God wants from each of us. Let this be your invitation to take action: Our Adult Choir is eagerly looking for singers to share the 11:00 am worship leadership responsibility. The Choir gathers each Wednesday at 7:30 pm for an energized ninety minutes of music and fellowship. Widely known for the considerable diversity of styles of music it enjoys, our Choir has been called “a lively support group for adults who also sing.” If you love God, love music, and love people, you possess all the qualifications needed to join this feisty group in ministry.

Mid-Week Express begins with supper Wednesday, September 7, at 5:45 pm. In addition to childcare and a study hall environment for children and youths, adults will have the opportunity to “give the gift of life” via our Blood Drive (you can choose a specific time to donate by phoning our office) and to pray together for our Vision and Discernment emphasis. The following Wednesday, September 14, at 6:30 pm, adults may join one of these six-session small groups: • Radical Together This dynamic study, led by Robin McNeny, is for persons who are not free to participate in a Sunday morning adult class - - our adult classes are reading this book together beginning September 11 - - or who simply want additional conversation around this unique course. • Spiritual Power When we look critically at ourselves spiritually, too often what we see is an 87 pound weakling. In other areas of our lives we feel strong, capable, focused, but in our spiritual lives we sense that something essential is missing. In this class, presented by our Spiritual Life Committee, participants will gain practical skills to strengthen, to transform our devotional lives with joy.

Sign up for a Retreat Weekend. Plans are currently forming for both a Men’s Retreat and a Women’s Retreat! Participants step away from their regular routines for two or three days to pause, reflect, pray, relax, re-focus. Scripture reading, un-hurried conversations, worship time, warm fellowship, good food - - a Winfree retreat always restores one’s spirit.

• So You’re a Parent Got kids? Church Vision Vision and Spiritual Direction Process Your prayerful, thoughtful and faith-filled involvement is needed for our vision process to be as successful as possible. You can be involved in three ways:

1- Prayer Preparation Join together in a daily prayer time at 9:24-25 (your choice of am or pm). The Sunday Here’s What’s Happening has a prayer request for the week related to the process. We will also have some special times of prayer, including the first Wednesday night, September 7, at 6:30 pm.

2- Vision Weekend Involvement There are two primary places to plug in. A- On Friday night, September 23, from 7:00 - 8:00 pm there is an open forum for all interested Winfree-ites. This is your chance to give input and answer questions from the five coaches who will be assisting us. Please plan on being at this session. The bigger the circle of input the coaches have, the better they will be able to help us. (The Church Council and other leaders will be meeting with the coaches on Saturday morning.) B- On Sunday, September 25, we will have a box lunch for the whole church and then we will hear from the coaches. They will highlight our strengths and offer us some recommendations to help us fulfill our God-given purpose.

3 – Join in the discussion and vote. On Sunday, October 2 at 5:00 pm we will have a feedback session about the recommendations, and then on Sunday, October 9, in the morning service, we will vote on the recommendations.

Here are our coaches for the Vision Weekend: Kim Jessie - Kim is a native of Virginia and has been in ministry for more than twenty years. She serves on the staff of Norfolk Baptist Association and is a trained church consultant in the areas of church ministry, community ministry, and church health. Dennis Green - Rev. Dennis Green is a graduate of John Leland Seminary and the Executive Pastor of Powhatan Community Church. His business background has been an invaluable resource in guiding PCC to be one of Virginia’s fastest growing churches. He has also been the site pastor of Westchester Community Church.

Ken Kessler - Ken serves as a Team Leader and Field Strategist for the Baptist General Association of Virginia, where he helps church leaders develop innovative strategies for congregational development and serves as ministry leadership coach for pastors and staff. Jim Hamacher – Jim is the Executive Director of Middle District Baptist Association. He came to the Middle District in 2005 after completing a thirteen-year pastorate in Northern Virginia. He is a graduate of Southwestern Seminary, with a doctorate in Marriage Enrichment.

Dee Whitten – Dee is the Pastor of Fairview at River Club in Fredericksburg. This is a new church plant from Fairview Baptist Church in downtown Fredericksburg. Started in 2007 with 150 seed members, it now runs over 500 in worship. Previously Dee served with the Baptist General Convention of Virginia, assisting churches and pastors, and has a long, successful track record of ministry. Page 3

th Ministries u o Y & ’s n re d il h C Rusty’s Ramblings Preschool Corner After a joyful and relaxing respite from school and routines, the weekday preschool is geared up to begin another year. Families and school staff are eagerly shopping for supplies and making final preparations. Teachers are traveling around the community making home visits to children. The preschool building is having a thorough cleaning, and art and toy supplies have been ordered, shipped, and stocked on shelves. Accreditation and licensing requirements have been met. With excitement and a little trepidation, we all acknowledge our readiness. On August 30, the faculty will meet for a luncheon and families will arrive at 7:00 PM for Parent Orientation. Over 150 families will meet in the sanctuary and then tour classrooms and familiarize themselves with our amazing school and church. All weekday families are invited to the Sunday School Fall Kickoff Picnic on September 11. We hope to have an excellent turnout. Please welcome these young families as you see them. Other dates of interest include: September 14 - Substitute Teacher Training October 3 - Parent Meeting, “Tools of the Mind: Building School Readiness through Self-Control”, by Ginny, 9:30 am. October 11 - Betsy Q performing at 11:00 and 1:15, church families welcome.

Community Life & Outre

We welcome the following new family to Winfree:

What’s New in the Library?

Sean & Emy Trende and their children, Judd and Will, have joined Winfree by transfer of letter from First Baptist Church of Richmond.

We have some great resources for Sunday School Teachers! We have two wonderful books by Marlene D. LeFever: Creative Teaching Minds, and Learning Styles. Use these resources to help reach the students God gave you to teach! We also have a number of new books for adults to help renew your spirituality and to help you find your calling. A couple of great Max Lucado books (The Cure for the Common Life, and Next Door Savior). Also When Christ Lives in Us by Justo L. Gonzalez, and The Life You’ve Always Wanted by John Ortberg.

The Outreach Committee needs creative minds and helping hearts to be a part of our team! This is a rewarding way to reach out to our community and introduce Winfree. The Fall is looking to be a fun and exciting time with lots of activities. Please join us and join in to share Christ and serve others.

Descriptions of these books are in the library. Come explore the library today!

Please call Mary Jackson (794-9481) or Vivian Sillmon (897-1431) for more information.

Community Life Stewardship Update Winfree continues to be blessed with strong giving that has helped us maintain our fiscal position and allows for us to actively plan for the future. Although we are still doing well, five out of the past seven weeks receipts were below the budgeted weekly requirement and our Financial Update (thru wk 34 ending 8/21/11): average weekly receipts figure has dropped almost every YTD Actual Budget Difference week since July 3rd. This is not unusual with summer 538,235 528,701 9,534 vacations, and we are confident this trend will change as we Receipts Expenses 443,596 497,067 (53,471) get settled into fall schedules. We are excited to kick off the Revive, Renew, and Renovate (RRR) Program to give our facility a much needed facelift. The committee has been meeting to consider priorities and collect estimates for the proposed projects. An informational discussion held on July 10 discussing the planned work was well attended. A finance committee has been formed to coordinate fundraising for the RRR Campaign, and they are working hard to ensure that we have the framework in place to begin the projects as soon as possible. And, of course, it wouldn’t be fall without budget requests! The budget requests from each committee are needed to create the proposed budget for 2012. If you are a committee chair and have not yet received a budget request form, please contact Lynn Kaerwer or Cameron Beane. This is an exciting time at Winfree. The last year has brought growth to our congregation, and we are in the midst of an active visioning process to seek God’s voice and direction. The budgeting and fall pledge campaign for 2012 will be important tools to realizing the vision. As always, we want to thank you for all the ways you continue to support the ministries of Winfree Memorial. Wanted:

I have gotten to see God’s hand at work in the lives of many, such as Woodley, who we met when he was just 4 days old. He was starving, dehydrated and hours from death. The medical team worked for hours to rehydrate him and now he is almost 10 months old, fat, and practically walking. He still cries every time he sees me but that’s okay. I will never forget the hours we waited to hear him cry on that first day. He can scream all he wants! . . . It is through all your support, prayers, and financial gifts that all this is possible. It is through you that God has blessed this ministry. I cannot thank you enough for your love and support. I don’t know that words will ever do it justice. . . . Bondye beni ou (God bless you). The entire letter is on the bulletin board outside the office.
