Rick and Annette Carter from One Another.
Tell us a bit about One Another? Rick says: One Another is an ethical homewares label with a collection of cushions, throws and artworks that combine modern designs with traditional artisan hand embroidery and weaving. We like to think our products have both style and substance as they provide an independent income for women in poverty and beautiful products for your home. Tell us about yourself and your background? Annette says: I studied Fashion Design and have been fortunate enough to work for some great Sydney labels as a designer, pattern maker and Design Room Manager for the last 15 years. Rick says: I studied advertising in Sydney and worked as a graphic designer here before embarking on traveling the world and ending up in London for a stint. I really fell in love with travelling and experiencing other cultures and during this time my passion in photography developed. I returned to Sydney and studied photography before launching my own design and photography business eight years ago called Jimmy Too, named after my first SLR camera. What sparked you to create your business – One Another? Rick says: The idea for creating an ethical homewares range came after trips to the Philippines and India where I was photographing women working their way out of poverty, for
not-for-profit Opportunity International Australia. On these trips we meet many inspiring women using amazing skills to support their families. However as much as we loved the intricate and colourful designs they created we felt they didn’t translate to our home back here in Australia. This sparked the idea to start our own label with a vision to create a collection that brought together their traditional artisan techniques with a modern aesthetic. Annette says: Rick and I were always keen to pool our combined talents into a project that would be ours together. It was after travelling to India that the seed was planted for what has grown into One Another. It still took several years for us to make it happen but we knew it would be ethically made, that it would be working with amazing artisans around the world and that it would be a creative voice for us.
to symbolise India’s freedom from British colonialism. The textural cushions from South Africa are eco friendly and are woven from t-shirt yarn, a by-product from the cotton mills when make jersey t-shirts. We think it’s really important for consumers to know where products are made which is why all our cushions have a label that is hand-signed by the embroiderer or weaver who made it. For some of the women it was quite difficult to do this as they are not used to writing, let alone in English.
What processes are involved in creating your pieces? Rick says: We work directly with three groups of women, the perfect hand embroidery is stitched in India and the beautiful loop weaving in South Africa and next season we will have striking woven artworks from Rawanda. As each design is done by hand, each is one of a kind, it is these variations that are part of the beauty and is what makes them so unique. We use a fabric called Khadi, which is a hand spun and hand woven cloth from India. It is the fabric made famous by Ghandi and came

< continued from previous page What inspires you in your designs? Rick says: All the design work is done from our studio in Surry Hills. Inspiration comes from so many places - elements from fashion, art, photography and from the countries we are working in - all combine to create the mood board we use as direction. The current collection takes inspiration from stained glass windows and the silhouettes of vessels on a table or overlapping on a mantle.

Can you tell us more about One Cushion: One Week? Rick says: I have been an ambassador for Opportunity International Australia for many years and we have partnered with them to help provide small loans to women living in poverty. The loans are used to start or grow their own business, it might be for a small grocery store, farm, fruit and vegetable stall, bakery or tailor. Whatever the business, a loan as small as $100 has the ability to create change. There is a great quote from Bono that sums up the power of such a loan, he says â&#x20AC;&#x153;Give a woman a small loan, and she, her husband, her

What do you love the most about having your own label? Annette says: The freedom to make good choices. Rick says: That we get to work with talented women artisans living in some of the most challenging regions in the world and hopefully be part of the solution of creating a better future. Who are some of your favourite designers? Annette says: Too many to mention them all! In fashion; Comme des Garcon, Ann Demeulemeester and locally, Dion Lee. I love the work of Rae and Charles Eames, Hans Wegner, Tom Dixon, Marc Newson, Frank Lloyd Wright, Mies van der Rohe and Tadao Ando ... the list goes on… continued on next page >

< continued from previous page Rick says: I think on the ethical side of things I am drawn to brands like Armadillo Rugs, TOMS and Krochet Kids. Plus there are some really great fashion designers starting to do ethical collaborations like Karen Walker and Vivenne Westwood. What is your favourite item in your store right now and why? Annette says: My favourite is always the next one! But if I had to choose, it’s hard to go past Leadlight Heart. Rick says: At the moment I think I would have to pick two as they look so good together on the couch - the hand woven Mint Vessels and the hand embroidered Khadi Vessels in White! What has been your biggest highlight? Annette says: Having an end product we are proud of, the ideas went back and forth for a few years before we finally had something tangible. We are also pretty chuffed to be stocked by some of the stores we have been long time fans of like Koskela, AP Design House and Spence & Lyda. What are your plans for the future? Annette says: The big vision is to educate people to think about how they shop, to see ethical and fair trade as the norm not just a small segment of the market. Of course, we are not going to do that alone and we have lots of small steps along the way. We would love to continue working with the co-operatives we already work with, increase our impact in their communities, as well as finding more groups of artisans we can work with.

Tell us about Milly & Eugene. Milly & Eugene was conceived a year ago as an online business. It began as a personal collection of unique homewares that we envisaged for our own homes. We have made something like four trips overseas searching for specific handcrafted products. We love things that are beautiful, bright and colourful. Pieces that will make a statement in your home. Since then we have expanded into retail and opened our first store in Waverley last month.
Tell us about yourselves and your background. We are from a close-knit family and in our late teens and early twenties, we opened a juice bar in Coogee with mum, dad and our brother. It was and still is a thriving success and we learned a lot about business there. From there we moved on to open our own businesses. I opened a fashion boutique with my husband in Coogee called By San Sebastian. It has been open for eight years now. Hailey and her husband ventured into the
restaurant business and now own three Brazilian BBQ restaurants called Churrasco in Sydney. What sparked you to create your business and work with your sister? We would both agree that we have a creative drive and an eye for colour and design. We were on a family holiday a couple of years ago trawling through shops full of bright and beautiful objects and I suppose it was from there that we decided to create our own business; one that was different in its view to
traditional home decor. Hailey and I have a lot in common, we share a strong work ethic and weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve always been close, so we knew we would be a good partnership. What processes are involved in selecting your pieces for Milly&Eugene? Well as I said earlier, we have been going off on buying trips about four times a year. On these trips, we have formed close relationships with our suppliers and their families. As the business has evolved, we are now bringing our design ideas to their craftsmanship and expertise to create variations of the original products. It is hugely exciting for us to see an idea become a beautiful tangible thing. This was challenging for the craftsmen initially because it was new and different but they have come to trust our aesthetic and know that our designs do work. It usually takes eight weeks from sample stage to the finished product and add to that four weeks for importation. So we are looking at three months turn around for our new products, which calls for a lot of forward planning and organisation within the year. What inspires you in the designs you choose? We are both constantly on the lookout for inspiration. Anything with colour is a major drawcard and we want people to embrace colour in their homes. We also have an eye for quirky design and seeing our fluoro bulldogs flying off the shelves is a great indication that our customers are loving it as well. Our Pinterest and Instagram accounts are full of bright and beautiful objects and beautiful decor that often inspires us. continued on next page >
What do you love most about having your own label/store? We both get real joy and satisfaction seeing our design ideas come to fruition. When the container arrives and the unload is underway, unwrapping our products feels like all our Christmases have come at once. It’s tiring and exhausting but also so rewarding. And then to get lovely positive feedback from people is a real buzz. Lots of our online customers send back photos with their Milly & Eugene pieces in situ in their homes. It’s really interesting to see other people’s
creativity in decorating. Our retail customers are really lovely as well and give us loads of compliments on our store. It’s full and bright and colourful and they all love it! Who are some of your favourite designers? We don’t really have any favourites. I suppose we take different aesthetics from a range of designers. We do like the chevron design and use of colour that Missoni is using right now, and intrigued also by some of the edgy designs by Moooi. We love the playfulness of their designs.
What is your favourite item in your store right now and why? I love the rattan bedheads! They are bold and bright and make a feature of any bedroom. We have a bedroom set-up at the rear of the shop and I love watching the customers swoon over our cosy bedheads adorned with a pile of plush cushions, kantha quilts and crocheted patchwork blankets. It truly captures their attention. Hailey is a big fan of the glass and brass terrariums which have made a recent comeback on the homeware scene. They can be used indoors or out and plants and succulents in particular thrive in them.
What has been your biggest highlight? We both agree that seeing seeing those first online orders flow in was a big high for us, but opening our Milly & Eugene retail store was the ultimate. It took six weeks to design the fit-out, source the materials and tradespeople, and get the space built and stocked and ready to open for business. No mean feat! Milly & Eugene wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t exist without the help and support of all our families. Our husbands and mum and dad are heavily involved. We only employ one staff member( lovely Tessa). Everyone comes together when help is needed.
More often than not our husbands wrap and pack the larger items for delivery. My husband, Joff, has single-handedly designed and created our website. And our mum and dad do anything and everything we ask! The kids even chip in and help to unpack the stock. What are your plans for the future? Hailey and I have a few ideas in the pipeline for Milly & Eugene. In the near future, we are expanding our range to include charming furniture pieces using antique and recycled wood. We are also considering venturing into wholesaling at some point and locating
possible sites for more retail stores. But thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also no rush with this. For the present, we are busy and happy enjoying the pleasures and challenges of running our online and retail stores and we truly understand the value and importance of doing that well.

EXQUISITE COMFORT Jacqueline Fink from Little Dandelions hand crafts “extreme” knitted blankets and throws using giant knitting needles from her Sydney home
Tell us a bit about your business? I make by hand “extreme” knitted blankets and throws from Australian and New Zealand unspun wool. The use of unspun wool, which I then felt, enables me to achieve an extreme scale as well as a beautiful, soft and luscious texture. My range focuses predominately on the use of natural coloured fibres (i.e. no dyes). Every piece is made by me in my home in Sydney using giant knitting needles. My work is a physical challenge as much as a dearly loved creative pursuit. Most of my work is by way of custom order where I work closely with clients to create a bespoke piece.
Tell us about yourself and your background? I am a married mum of three children (12, 10 and 7). I grew up in Northern New South Wales and studied a law degree at Bond University on the Gold Coast. I moved to Sydney in 1994 to complete my studies and have been here ever since. I launched Little Dandelion in April 2012 after a long search for a creative outlet and I haven’t stopped knitting since. What processes are involved in creating your pieces? Unspun wool is not a proper knitting yarn so I need to employ several processes to achieve the scale and look of my work. These processes are extremely labour intensive. As
I have no technical background in fine arts or textiles, these process are also self-taught and hard won: they also took me years of experimentation and loads of very costly mistakes to work out. What inspires you in your designs? Colours, textures, nature and wool in general are all sources of inspiration. Paperdermy Penguins These cute penguins are made from acid free 220-300gsm watercolour paper and canson card. They are made to order. The base is made from wood and the skeleton is made from box board for stability. Everything else is made from paper. Each feather is cut and scored by hand. The penguins are 20cmX22cmX24cm. They have a matte spray varnish over the top to protect them but doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t detract from the quality finish of the paper. Each sculpture can take me up to a week to make. cromer Tell us a bit about your business? Hello, I’m a freelance artist and designer. I gravitate towards being an artist selling my bold giclée prints online. Tell us about yourself and your background? Ok, well, I’m 33 and pretty much a big kid. I have no intensions of growing up, I keep thinking to myself “maybe it’s time to be an adult” but then I’m like “yeah, nah”. I thrive on colourful and shiny objects, like a magpie. I started my career working as a junior burger for Hallmark Cards Australia and worked my up to Creative Manager, so yes, I have designed millions of getting cards! From
there I ran studios for Stuck on You and Penny Scallan before making a solo move earlier this year. Party! What sparked you to create your business? I guess it was an itch that needed to be scratched. You can’t scratch your brain, it’s impossible and quite frankly dangerous, so I decided to go out on my own and start my own business. Ever since I can remember my head has always been full of ideas and now I can safely release them. I figured that taking a risk and started my solo work absolutely was the better path than potentially having regret later on in life. continued on next page >
< continued from previous page What processes are involved in creating your pieces? Colour…love it. The brighter the better! From a technical point of view, I use stencils and the greatest tool ever, the sponge. The sponge is the texture king, it does wonders. Sometimes I do a whole piece or sometimes I do bits and cut and paste them together. I like to change my mind a lot, it’s ok to do that. What inspires you in your designs? Inspires is the wrong word, more like haunts. These guys pester me in my head, like someone constantly knocking at the door…if I don’t answer they won’t go away. I find they mostly pop up on random occasions, like driving or showering or talking to someone. It happens like a lightening bolt. BAM! There it is. What do you love the most about having your own label? Freedom to be me. You don’t get the opportunities to fully inject your own style into client work sometimes, it may not be

commercial enough for them. Having my own label let’s me explore what I love and essentially makes the world my oyster. I’m pretty ambitious. Who are some of your favourite designers? Totes Laura Blythman, she is a bestie of a friend and we have known each other since our wee Hallmark days. Her collages and colour usage are pure honey for my eyes. The same is with Todd James, such a master of colour and shape, it’s beautiful, total wow. And at the moment I am obsessed with German based paper artist Ollanski, his work is so magical I could burst with joy. What is your favourite item in your store right now and why? It’s got to be Faeries. I think it’s the deep green. I’m drawn to green and black for some unknown cosmic reason. The shapes and little faeries in it just make me happy. continued on next page >

It’s so bloody exciting! What are your plans for the future? To keep working on my own label, collaborating with more awesome people, definitely to travel more…I tend to never give myself a decent break. The biggest thing though would be to trust and follow my gut more. Is there anything else you would like to tell us about your business? Sure. I’m located down the surfcoast of Victoria on a little farmlet surrounded by lots of animals. I love them, especially the chickens.

HABITOTS Suzanne Acteson has grown her online boutique store – Habitots – with an amazing selection of designer homewares and hopes to open a retail store later this year Tell us a bit about your business and how it was formed? Habitots is a new style of retail store that has many bows to its arrow. Beginning as an online boutique store in 2013 while I was still working in advertising, we moved out of the digital space and into a pop-up shop in Albert Park in April 2014. We are now looking for a new, permanent place to call home and hope to reopen by September 2014. As well as selling an array of unique and colourful kids products and homewares, Habitots is a destination for a range of classes, activities, parties for families. Parents can grab a coffee in our café while they wait for kids during an art, music or cooking class or while they participate themselves with their little ones. There are regular term classes or casual dropin classes that sometimes suits parents more. Our party spaces are designed for hand on classes and easy, fun and creative birthdays. We are very community oriented and want Habitots to feel like the cool café you used to go to before you had kids with beautiful
products, an innovative range of classes and parties. We support small businesses and a number of charities and we believe in running our business in a conscious way. How did your career begin? I began in sales for a software company and when I moved to Australia to follow my heart (I fell in love with my now husband while on holiday here), sales was a relatively easy job to find. I fell into a role in advertising and worked by way through the agency to eventually run it as Managing Director. For many, sales is a dirty word but for me it’s been my saviour. I see so many people with amazing creative ideas, artistic abilities, desire and motivation to run a business but they don’t know how to sell it. I talk to, meet with and contact many suppliers about buying their products and I can count the time on my hands when someone has actually picked up the phone to call me. The ones who have, I’ve usually bought from because they’ve shared their story, their products’ story and ask me for the order! continued on next page >

I saw similar businesses in the US and Canada and for many years dreamed about starting my own as I saw a gap in the market here in Australia. Timing was everything so after 11 years at the ad agency, I left to give Habitots my full-time attention. I also wanted a better balance with my family life, the flexibility that running my own business gives me and the power to make the decisions and live by them. It’s not easier work, but it’s certainly more passionate and fulfilling. Can you tell us where you source your gorgeous homewares from and how do you select the right item for your store? I search high and low for brands that you can’t
find everywhere. I search the internet, spend many hours on Instagram, trawl through lists of exhibitors at trade shows in the US and Europe. I love finding brands that are not in Australia yet, small designers trying to make it happen or perhaps are on my doorstep here in Melbourne and I’d never heard of them. I know instantly when I see a product that it will fit the Habitots branding. I love colourful, unique products that could work in kids rooms, in your living room or kitchen. We have an inner child in us all and that’s why I think my general homewares do well – they tap into the playful spirit that we all have and want to translate into our homes. What do you love the most about having your own store?
I love talking to customers about what Habitots is all about, telling the stories of the brands we have and helping them find that perfect gift or product they’ve been looking for. I love the energy I get when I’m in store. I can be exhausted after a sleepless night with the kids but as soon as I get in-store, I find an energy from the passion I have for what we’re doing and it keeps me going all day. Who are some of your favourite designers? I do love everything we stock but I suppose I have a soft spot for some of the brands – many of them I use in my own home. Fabgoose blankets are just divine and you have to feel them to believe them. Valentina from Fabgoose is making such conscious decisions in the way that she manufacturers them that they are

extra special for me. I love Pehr Designs and their lovely storage solutions and kids range. Another mumled business by 2 creative ladies in Toronto, Canada. We are the only ones with Pehr in Australia and our customers loved them in store. Colourful and practical, we use about 10 of them in my house. Some of our local brands are also amazing – Homely Creatures based in Melbourne makes adorable kids homewares and Kate & Kate blankets are amazingly soft with modern designs. What do you consider to be a must have item in your home? I know this isn’t the question but the first thing that came to mind was laughter. I love that
my kids have my husbands English sense of humour and that at 3 and 6 they can already wind me up a treat, just like their dad. In terms of an item, I’d have to say Pehr Designs storage hampers. They keep things organised in my office, the kids rooms (toys!) and make my pile of laundry, look very pretty. It’s always full and the clothes sit beautifully out of sight (and out of mind). What has been your biggest highlight? It would have to be opening my pop-up shop. It was a leap of faith, the best market research to tell me whether my idea had legs or not, the most work ever, the best work ever and the best outcome ever. We’re hunting for a permanent location now because it was a great success.
• Don’t have too many cushions on your couch. Two to three is enough. Rotate them in seasons if you can’t bear to have so few. • Spend the money on things you want to last. Bed linens are not something I like to replace very often so if you want 3-5 years out of your sheets (my mums had hers for 30 years!), then invest in them. • Same thing goes for the staple home items but anything you want to rotate seasonally, look for a bargain. I love a bargain and some big stores and brands come out with some great stuff every season. • Start with the prints on your wall and rugs on your floor then work upward and downward from there with accessories. Be careful not to get prints and rugs that are too small – they can make a small room look even smaller. DIY Everybody loves a little DIY every now and then so why not try your hand at these beautiful and practical projects
DIY FABRIC POT HOLDER Fiona Michelon from Craft Hunter shows us how to create your own fabric pot holder in five easy steps

STEP ONE: Measure out and mark up a 40 x 60cm rectangle onto the back of 1 piece of fabric (obviously go bigger if you have a large plant though!) Place on top of your 2nd piece of fabric so the backs are both facing out and pin around the sketched rectangle. Sew 3 sides of your rectangle with a simple straight or zigzag stitch, leaving one of the shorter sides open. Trim around your sewed edges with your scissors.
STEP TWO: Place both hands inside your pillow and flatten it out so that the seam is facing up and is in the centre. Push a pin through the seam and ensure its centred with the seam on the underside. Mark a 20cm straight line across the point.
STEP THREE: Sew across the line, trim off the fabric and then repeat for the other side of your bag. You should then be left with a base that looks like this.
STEP FOUR: Repeat these steps for your 2nd fabric design and when youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve finished, place your liner bag inside the other. To keep the bag sitting up nicely I placed a couple of pieces of craft foam in between the layers, cardboard would work a treat too.

shop frank Interior Designer Heather Noonan was inspired after travelling through Europe and North Africa to start up her own store Shop Frank and offer unique handcrafted homewares
This range of handmade ceramic bowls, is a simple yet elegant design. Designed and made by Misa Kumabuchi of Mushimegane Books, each bowl is made by hand in her studio in Nishinomiya, Japan.
Tell us about Shop Frank? Shop Frank is an online store that stocks products that advocate our belief in unique, handcrafted goods that are made in a socially and ecologically responsible manner. We hope to support the artisans and their organizations through the promotion of their products in our store and share the stories of the hands by which they are made. Tell us about yourself and your background? I live in Sydney with my husband Andrew and our two children Akira and Miya. I am an Interior designer by trade and I have a love affair with textiles. This probably influenced me to undertake a Masters in textile design following my degree in Interior Architecture at the University of New South Wales.
What sparked you to create your business? We lived in London for a few years and within that time travelled extensively throughout Europe and North Africa. Somewhere along our travels the desire to create a store that housed products that not only had a strong design element but were also consciously made was formed. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been fun and very exciting to see Shop Frank come to life. Tell us about your products and how you choose them for your store? Who are the designers? When sourcing, we look for simplicity, quality and durability and craftsmanship. This involves seeking out suppliers and designers who share a similar ethos to ourselves. We have been so lucky to work with some amazing and inspiring designers such as Marta Bahillo of babaà who designs the most gorgeous range of children’s knitwear all hand made in Spain. Saana ja Olli a textile design couple from Finland who design, print and manufacture all their textiles locally and ‘transparently’ from 100% Hemp. Then there is Misa Kambuchi of Mushimegane Books a Japanese ceramicist who creates simple yet elegant bowls and vessels using local sand collected on her travels throughout Japan. I am truly humbled by all the work of the designers in Shop Frank. What do you love the most about having your own store? The flexibility is a major benefit, especially with two little rascals running havoc throughout the house. However, I would have to say that what I love most about having my own store is being able to work with such inspiring designers and discovering new products and artisans and to share their stories. Who are some of your favourite designers? Some of my favourite designers at the moment would have to be Cary Vaughan and Jenna Wilson of Ace and Jig who are not only creating the most beautiful textiles but some timeless garments as well.

With a background in Interior Architecture I couldn’t resist popping some of my favourites in here like Swiss Architect Peter Zumpthor and British designer John Pawson, both creating simple, clean spaces with an attention to detail. What is your favourite item in your store right now and why? I am a sucker for a good tea pot so it is safe to say that my favourite at the moment would have to be the Hasami tea pot. It’s design is so simple, elegant and contemporary yet it’s got this old familiarity about it, like an old family heirloom that has been passed down the generations and it looks like it has been sitting on your shelf for years just getting better with age. What has been your biggest highlight? It never ceases to amaze me how generous and kind people can be and as Shop Frank is relatively new, we have received so much support and have already built strong relationships with the designers we are working with. What are your plans for the future? There are some exciting things happening at Shop Frank one of them being that we are currently working on a small batch of our very own FRANK homewares. We hope to expand our homewares range and work with artisan groups from around the globe.

little quarters Sarah Pook decided to use her talent as a graphic designer/illustrator to create beautifully illustrated limited edition artworks after the loss of her sister Tell us a bit about Little Quarters? Little Quarters by Sarah Pook, is a unique limited edition collection of illustrations, prints, wall hangings, banners, flags and cushions for your home. All intricately illustrated using traditional techniques, designed and made by myself. Proudly printed in Melbourne, Australia my illustrations of skulls, feathers, bohemian beauties and wild flowers are a mad mix of whimsical meets dark and edgy. My illustrations are of a simplistic nature with just a hint of colour, and the use of the unique custom LQ wax seal which stamps each print ensuring its authenticity has become a signature mark and very much a main detail in my work. The papers and materials of which I use to create each artwork are of the highest quality and technique; fine art printing using pigment
inks with gold foil embellishments, embossing and watercolour/inks, creating a sense of opulence and luxury at an affordable price for your home. Tell us about yourself and your background? I am an Illustrator/designer. I have recently relocated from Sydney to South of Melbourne on the Surf Coast at the end of 2013 after quiting my day job as an established Graphic Designer. I have built a successful career working within the fashion industry over the past nine years, focusing my time in graphic, fashion and textile design as well as specialising in screen-printing, print styling and yardage design. My design and illustration work for a couple of Australia’s leading street wear companies over this time has helped build and expand several
labels from local to international brands and is a body of work that I am incredibly proud of. It is through my time as a Graphic Designer that I have been able to build a sturdy platform to take that leap of faith into pursuing my own art career full time… and so Little Quarters was born. What sparked you to create your business? Although always being the creative type, the recent passing of my beautiful big sister to cancer has shown me that life really is too short and precious not to do what you love and love what you do! I loved my job as a graphic designer, but I felt I had hit a point in my career where I needed more, it wasn’t the company or the industry I was working in, I just became hungry for new challenges. continued on next page >
< continued from previous page Building and running a business which is based off being creative is that challenge I was searching for. Deciding to pursue my art career full time and focusing on building Little Quarters has very much been apart of my healing process also. What processes are involved in creating your pieces? My creative process consists of: Researching, nutting out ideas and the composition of an illustration with rough sketches… sometimes too many, and then settling down to create the final piece. I need to be in a good frame of mind, some of the illustrations I work on take hours/ days to complete and if I’m just not feeling it, it’s better
to stay away from the drawing table and focus on the business stuff for that day. Usually my day plays out a little like this: Getting up early for a walk on the beach with my Frenchie Perro. (Reset, focuses and is the best way to start the day) A strong coffee is a must! Emails, packaging prints then a post office drop/ deliveries/visit to my printers/ framer. Finding a suitable play list to listen to Research, sketching then onto my drawing table for the rest of the day. With constant yoga stretches and exercises throughout the day to help keep my back from cramping up. I work in my studio, from home. It has incredible natural light, which fills the room from large
glass doors that open up onto a small deck. It looks over a quiet street and I am lucky enough to have views of the ocean in the distance. It’s the BEST, my happy space! I think its really important to have a great space to work in, it plays a huge part in my creative process. What inspires you in your designs? I’m a bit of a collector. I am attracted to and surround myself with beautiful things, often pieces found on my travels. I must have been a bowerbird in a past life! Within my illustrations I try to create that very thing I search for, for others to collect. Pieces with a special uniqueness telling a story and have meaning. I want to take my audience on an adventure within my work, and ignite their imagination and let them be free to run wild there. continued on next page >
< continued from previous page Things that inspire me; Travel, different cultures, nature, people, the bohemian life, music, movies, Interior/fashion magazines, and other creative minds, you could say, just about everything and I find myself constantly referencing these when creating new works. Nature: flowers and foliage and the natural patterns nature creates has been a recent obsession of mine, and my new works are evolving down this path. What do you love the most about having your own label? I think when you are working on something
that is one hundred percent yours, its you! Its your passion, and you receive and are able to appreciate one hundred percent of the rewards. The business is what ever you want it to be. And it’s a load of fun! Who are some of your favourite designers? What is your favourite item in your store right now and why? I would have to say my Gypsies Kiss print, she is just the right amount of whimsical. Inspired by the peachy kiss of the sun on the sky at dusk. This bohemian feathered beauty is a free spirited wanderer and a reminder to live for today. What has been your biggest highlight? My focusing so far has been on building my business and creating the Little Quarters brand, releasing my range of Limited Edition Prints, expanding into homewares, and in the early stages of expanding in other areas. I have been so fortunate to have a steady stream of work float through my inbox since deciding to focus on Little Quarters full time. My stockist list is expanding throughout Australia and even overseas. I work on a lot of commission illustrations for various private collections and I am now starting to attract businesses and other like-minded creative’s to collaborate with. It has all come about quiet naturally, which has been really nice. My favourite and most rewarding milestone of late has been the recent sale of a handful of my original illustrations. All of which have sold from private enquiries. Is there anything else you would like to tell us about your business? I would LOVE to share with you all that I am taking part in this years Finders Keepers Market in Melbourne on the 25th and 26th of July. I have a beautiful little collaboration, which I will hopefully be releasing in time for FK so stay tuned. Tell us a little bit about your business Barking Green offers luxurious organic pet bedding, blankets and toys with an environmental conscience. Our organic Barking Green eco lounge is hand made in Australia from GOTS certified organic cotton fabrics and filled with Australian organic wool or certified organic cotton filling. How did you develop your interest in bedding for pets? A few years ago I was struggling to find an organic dog bed in Australia. It was whilst sourcing eco friendly options to traditional polyester stuffing that I first saw a gap in the market and launched www. ecofilling.com. That was the first step in making eco friendly filling available to the general public. Next step was to have custom made homewares and pet bedding available for those who didn’t, couldn’t, or simply weren’t interested in making their own. After a few false starts Barking Green was born. Where do you source your eco friendly products? All items requiring organic fill are manufactured in Australia by Eco Filling Australia. In addition to making our own range of organic pet products we also feature a small range of eco blankets and toys from talented eco minded International designers.
Your choice of fabrics seems to fit current trends? It was important when designing the Barking Green Eco lounge that the fabrics were current, on trend and able to fit with contemporary decor. Our dog beds compliment any home as well as being super comfortable and organic. Our custom made option allows the buyer to select their preferred fabrics, in addition we can make extra covers so the buyer can change them to suit the season, mood or decor. I get excited with every new batch of fabrics that arrive. Each season we can update new beds to the range keeping in fresh and new. Bright colours and patterns are my favourites, they instantly add a pop of colour to any decor. What is important to you? Being Eco and Organic. The more we learn of the potential dangers of chemicals in our manufacturing the more organic fabrics become popular. With so many eco friendly and organic options available nobody needs to have toxic polyester in their homes.
