Tell us a bit about your brand ‘Feliz’? Feliz is the Spanish word for Happy and that is how we want our range to make people feel. Hand drawn imagery, clean designing with pops of colour and the ability to mix and match makes for a happy (Feliz) home. Tell us about yourself and your background? Mel here: I have worked in photography, product development and buying for several years, it was challenging and rewarding. After having my first child, I thought it was about time I focus my ideas and energy into my own brand. Thankfully Jane was thinking the same thing and together we combine all of our skills (and lack thereof!) to make Feliz happen. What sparked you to create your brand? When we first dreamt of Feliz there was a gap in the children’s bed linen market (not the case anymore!). Jane and I both struggled to find linen that we loved and that was easy to fit into our homes – so we thought let’s just do it ourselves. What processes are involved in creating your designs? Chats, playing with our kids, taking long walks
on the beach – ha – sounds like a holiday, but honestly inspiration is all around us. The most insignificant thing can stop you in your tracks and capture your imagination. What inspired you in your designs for the new collection? We have taken a slightly different direction for the new adult range. We have played around with textures and have used a more layered palette for the Thread Lightly design, which is beautifully embroidered. Jane has played around with some different painting techniques and eventually one of her stunning watercolour artworks has become the design you see in the range. What do you love the most about having your own label? Learning, creating, the independence and a complete lack of boredom. And making something that we can call our own. Because we make most of our products by hand, there is sooo much work involved in creating bed linen (more than we ever anticipated!) so when it all comes together and it actually is what you had dreamed, it really is an amazing feeling.
What are your top five designer tips? Play – fun things happen. Don’t over think it – hard to do! Stay true to your own style – don’t get too caught up in the latest trends! Surround yourself with positive people. Just start! What is your favourite item in your store right now and why? I am a bit in love with the Watercolour cushion, the design is just soo dreamy! What has been your biggest highlight? I must say having our Owl pillowcase on Offspring was pretty surreal – especially seeing Patrick lying on it. What do you foresee as the next big trend? Sleep! We would love that to catch on in our house. Honestly, we try not to get too caught on the latest trends. Our style is clean designing and pops of colour. We hope our designs have longevity. Nat Wheeler and Kristy Sadlier are the team behind norsu interiors. Born of a mutual obsession of beautiful things and a true love of Scandinavian design, norsu is an Australian online boutique specialising in unique and carefully curated Nordic homewares. Having met at their local Mother’s Group, not only did Kristy and Nat share the experience of becoming new mums, they soon discovered a shared mutual obsession of Scandinavian design. Constantly trawling Scandi blogs and interior magazines one common theme emerged to them both, and that was the lack of access
that consumers had to purchase beautiful Scandinavian products in Australia. Both ladies have backgrounds in corporate marketing and communications within large multinational organisations. Not long after returning to these roles from maternity leave, norsu was born. It provides them with a creative outlet that they were unable to channel in their corporate jobs. URBAANI Kylie Nash and Simone Lee took a love of all things Scandi and turned it into a thriving Scandinavian and European homewares store Tell us a bit about Urbaani and how it was formed? urbaani is a distributor and wholesaler of Scandinavian and European homewares. We love to scour the world looking for unique and sustainable wares that can bring homes to life. We believe that over time special and unique pieces added to the home create your own individual layered story. Friends for over 15 years, we decided to combine our obsession for design and homewares and our love for all things Scandi. We look for beautiful products that offer not only a design element but are also ethically produced. How did your career begin? We are both Accountants and have spent many years in the business sector. We also run local businesses with our husbands and have always had a passion on the weekends for renovating/building homes and sourcing gorgeous items to style them. The satisfaction we received from doing this has outweighed our traditional careers, so it was natural to continue during the week pursuing what we loved.
What sparked you to create your business? In a modern and chaotic world, the space that we determine is our centrepiece, our compass and a place where we can achieve our daily mission to provide for work, home and family. When we pause, we can look and really admire our own space and our personal expression. We’d like to help others achieve this. Although our backgrounds are in the corporate world, we both felt that our true passion was in the design space and after having children decided to take the leap of faith. We shared a vision to bring together quality products from talented designers with a lot of heart and soul. Finding something different and unique and bringing it to others sparks us up. Can you tell us where you source your gorgeous homewares from and how do you select the right item for your store? We bring together talented designers from Europe and Scandinavia. For us it’s all about the layers that create the lifestyle that we all crave, whether it be a beautiful cushion or a cutting board that is so artful you don’t have the heart to chop on it. We also seek out eco-friendly and
sustainable homewares that use the best of materials crafted by the communities they live in. We like to find out as much information about the designer and their philosophy and manufacturing process as we can so we can ensure we are a good fit for each other. We look to what is current and happening now. We love bright, clean and modern spaces filled with natural light and pure lines. We appreciate natural timbers and materials, earthy tones, luxurious textiles, quality made accessories and unique prints and designs. Likewise we love artwork and pops of colour. What do you love the most about having your own store? Freedom to express our own style whilst having fun. Showcasing such incredible designers who truly love what they do and being able to share that with others is rewarding. All of our designers so far have been very different from each, for this reason we love the range of diversity and options available to our customers. < continued from previous page Who are some of your favourite designers? As lovers of all things Scandinavian we do still adore brands and designers like Marimekko, Muuto, bylassen and Arne Jacobsen. Our design preferences are contemporary yet modern by definition. We draw inspiration from beautiful and functional everyday objects that complement and enhance the lifestyle of those that use them, but without compromising the highest quality. So any designers ticking those boxes capture our attention. What do you consider to be a must have item in your home? Kylie: A furniture piece that you can relax in teamed with a gorgeous rug and pile of cushions are a must for me. My husband, children and I like to relax together; being able to do that in a stylish, warm and inviting
space is very special to me. Simone: Having a fabulous art print or poster is a must; it adds texture and conversation to any room. What has been your biggest highlight? Our biggest highlight so far has been seeing our customers get excited about our offerings or say how unique and well made they are. We strive to bring to Australia designs not yet seen here and we feel happy that is being recognised. Do you have any advice for our readers who love all things for the home? Kylie: Pick 3 items you really really love and place them where you can not only admire them, but use them every day. You can then build more inexpensive items around those pieces without breaking your budget. Simone: Share your home with unique pieces that show your individuality and have meaning to you.
What do you foresee as the next big trend? Kylie: I can see the introduction of new materials and textures continuing alongside the monochrome trend. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m really looking forward to the new black and white patterns and designs beyond geometric shapes. I also have a soft spot for the sophisticated colours of deep blue and gold. I think they really convey luxury for the everyday. Simone: Sustainable designer homewares made from European hemp are becoming more and more popular. Customers care about the best use of the materials, wastage and manufacturing processes. Hemp fabric is eco-friendly in terms of production but is also a lux material that will last the test of time. We are getting requests for this more and more.

Tell us a bit about Sack Me!? The idea for Sack Me! came about in 2013 when I failed to find bedding for my boys which was a mix sack of fun, classic and quirky, that wasn’t either gender specific (rockets, trains, cars for boys) or just patterns – as beautiful as they are, I felt it lacked a sense of adventure for kids. I saw an opportunity to create a unisex range that was truly unique - a twist on familiar objects (in this instance, food) that really got the kids excited and went for it.
What do you love the most about having your own label? I love the freedom to curate my own products and the opportunity to really push the boundaries (personally and professionally). I get to set the rules, break the rules and realise at the end of the day, there are no rules when it’s your gig – that’s a pretty awesome. Most of all I get to share a piece of myself with everyone who brings a Sack Me! product home (in a non creepy way of course!)
Tell us about yourself and your background? I studied Architecture at the University of Sydney and even though it was a very technical course, I was still able to dabble in electives such as photography, screen printing, ceramics and life drawing which sustained me through those 6 years. Upon graduating, I worked at various commercial practices but soon after the arrival of my twin boys in 2010 I wasn’t able to return to full time practice. The need for a creative outlet gave rise to a graphic design business (ham&pea) that grew along with the boys and fast forward 5 years, Sack Me! was born.
Who are some of your favourite designers? I get a lot of inspiration from fashion and architecture and love the work of the late Alexander McQueen, John Galliano, Rem Koolhaas, Zaha Hadid, Kazuyo Sejima to local talents such as Beci Orpin, Toni Matievski, Sarah-Jane Clarke & Heidi Middleton.
What sparked you to create Sack Me!? I’m an entrepreneur at heart. I guess one can say I’ve been doing business since I was a child, getting friends and family to purchase ridiculous (often hideous) creations of mine. At the ripe age of 12, I sold every single flower mum received from well wishing friends after the birth of my youngest sister to fund a party my girlfriends and I had organised. I may have made some bad business decisions along the way, but it was only a natural progression that led me to creating Sack Me!, an avenue to express and share my (less hideous) work and make an honest living out of it. What processes are involved in creating your pieces? I tend to work backwards with my thought process often starting with a vision of the end product I would like to create. Days and weeks of sketching ideas followed by testing them on the kids, playing with colour schemes, adding and subtracting from the designs to create a strong and coherent theme. I don’t allow myself online to do any research too soon as I like the process to flow from my initial instincts. When the designs start to take form, I translate them digitally. I work very closely with our manufacturers during this stage to ensure the pattern making will work on the products and we source materials and create samples during this stage. Following a series of trial and error, adjustments and improvements, the products are well on it’s way to becoming a reality. What inspires you in your designs? Travel, fashion, conversations and definitely my children. I’m certainly not governed by trends… I love to zig when everyone zags!
What is your favourite item in your store right now and why? Tough question. I pour in so much love into each design but I suppose the Pasta Amore collection purely because it holds sentimental value to me. My very first project with my graphic design business some 5 years ago was designing a collection of 6 ‘spell it with Pasta’ cards so my carb addiction runs deep. What has been your biggest highlight? Most definitely the night when I presented the bedding to my boys – it could have easily been mistaken for the morning of Christmas. The kids were shrieking in delight and the excitement on their faces to sleep in ice cream covered quilts, pasta bedding and hearing them make friends with the Green Mob just sends me dizzy with happiness. I have been working on this for well over a year, and the designs came as no surprise to them so nothing quite prepared me to see the delight when they got to pick and choose what bedding to have on their beds. What are your plans for the future? I look forward to taking my designs beyond the bedroom. I’m having fun expanding our home range and hope to share those designs very soon. I’m also working on a few collaborations with a bunch of clever creatives so it’s busy but exciting times ahead. Is there anything else you would like to tell us about your business? I would love to take this opportunity to express a heartfelt thanks to everyone for their support, enthusiasm and getting on board with all we are doing. laura’s salvation Laura Shallcrass’s has turned her illustrative talents into creating stunning cushions, art prints and even gorgeous children’s wear
Tell us a bit about your illustrations? My work is mostly character focused, but lately I’ve become really interested in botanicals so that’s new for me. I’m pretty into symbolism. If there’s not back story, meaning and often hidden references in my work I can’t finish it for some reason. It needs a soul to keep me interested. I also love pattern, limited colour palettes, but that’s fairly obvious I think. Tell us about yourself and your background? I’m an illustration major but I’ve always loved drawing, painting, anything creative really. After finishing uni I travelled around and worked odd jobs before settling in Queenstown and starting a family. It was only after the birth of my first son that I really gave illustrating a go as a career and I haven’t looked back. What sparked you to begin your own business? Having a bit of time on my hands after
Boston was born and needing a creative outlet now that I wasn’t working. Being able to go upstairs and draw for a couple of hours is still my salvation from a hectic mummying lifestyle. Without it I think I would be one of those crazy ladies who talks to everyone like they’re about 6 months old because she doesn’t get out enough. What techniques do you use in creating your pieces? I always start with a line drawing whether the finished product is going to be an oil painting, paper cut work or ink drawing. I then transfer my drawing to whatever surface I’m going to be working on and if it’s a patterned work I mark out the darkest and lightest areas. After that it’s just a case of doing the work. Patterning or painting or both. What inspires you in your designs? I’m inspired by the usual things, nature, people in the street. Animals are pretty huge for me too. It can be anything though. A
piece I just finished was inspired by looking at how my mustard coloured sleeve looked next to my peach coloured nail polish. It really can come from anywhere. How did your progress your work into homewares? My husband and I have just built our first house and so I have a newly developed love of homewares myself. So it seemed a natural progression. As for the kids clothes I really just wanted some for my kiddies and I’m just stoked other people seem to like them too. Who are some of your favourite artists and why? Oh man that’s a hard question - there are so many. I love Miso and Twoone from Australia, Ryan McLennan, Jeremy Fish and so many others that I can’t even think of right now. Mostly I love art to be a little edgy, a little low brow. Anything featured in the pages of Juxtapoz magazine or Booooooom.com continued on next page >
< continued from previous page What is your most favourite illustration that you have completed? They all come come with their own unique challenges and satisfactions. At the moment I guess I’m pretty proud of a work I just finished called Lucky Red Shirt. It took me about 6 months to complete and was my first attempt at portraiture which certainly didn’t come easy. But I feel like it’s the first time I’ve truly succeeded in combining oil painting and pattern in one painting. I’m also pretty in love with a new pattern I’ve started doing which is sort of like a mathematical constellation, which I’m really enjoying juxtaposing with organic subject matter. What has been your biggest highlight? Being published in books and magazines
is always really exciting. Last year I was a finalist and published in The Red Book and also Stolen Vol 2. which I’m pretty proud of but mostly I just feel so grateful and humbled whenever anyone wants to buy my work. That people value it enough to want it in their homes is the biggest highlight and so far that seems to be ongoing which is just amazing. We design and sell really lovely children’s products such fabric decals, mini stickers, bamboo dinnerware and wallpaper. We also have a range of wrapping paper that is devine. We are are based in tiny village Northern NSW in Australia, but our products are available all around the world in so many beautiful stores.
What processes are involved in creating your pieces? Each product category has a different process, but most involve the use of patterns and characters. The designs are first brought to life in a decal which is digitally printed. We then adapt the design to other products. Luckily most of our products are made locally so it’s easy to be a part of the process and quality control. Our imported products are a little different and involves a more complicated level of manufacturing. They can take a long time from sampling to production. I think the language barriers are a bit challenging.But the travel certainly makes up for it.
Tell us about yourself and your background? I think I can honestly say that I’m living my dreams. I share these dreams with two beautiful girls and my partner in northern NSW, Australia. It’s all very green grasses and cottages, vegie gardens and quaint studios in old buildings. It’s important that I remind myself daily to stop and appreciate it all. It’s crazy also and I have to constantly work on the balance. It’s so easy to pour yourself too much into something while other things fall apart. The pace of children and small business sometimes makes me spin in circles. I’m sure I’m not alone. I guess people like me wouldn’t have it any other way. Before Love Mae I enjoyed wandering the world and living in some incredible remote locations. I love the extremes in life.
What inspires you in your designs? All the little loves in our life. Hanging out with them so much never leaves you short on ideas. When it comes to colour we try to keep it so that mum and dad can match back their stylish tastes. I wouldn’t say we follow trends, but we do have an eye for beautiful. It’s so much fun bringing to life themes for children’s bedrooms, we believe they don’t need to be tacky and super loud. We love that there are so many stylish parents out there that help their children find our goodies.
What sparked you to create Love Mae? In no particular order…. Magic, a series of events, hope and dreams. Next came blood, sweat and tears. I was lucky to have grown Love Mae with some extremely talented people. Love Mae had a gorgeous beginning.
What do you love the most about having your own label? On a personal level I love that I can shake up routine. I’m not very good at repetition and Love Mae guarantees ‘Never a dull moment’. I also love that as a women and not just a mother that continued on next page >

< continued from previous page I have an outlet to pour myself into. It’s a whole other part of me that gets filled by its every moment, good and not so good. Who are some of your favourite designers? I covet so many amazing designers and products, especially Australian. I used to do a lot of tradeshows and I found myself constantly speechless at people’s work when I walked around the aisles. Pony Rider, Munster Kids, Fromague Lights, la de dah kids.. gosh I could go on quite easily. Needless to say a lot of these labels have incredible artists behind them. Meeri Anneli is an illustrator that does a few of our designs and she is most definitely my favourite. Her detailed drawings are overwhelming. Seriously how can people draw like that! What is your favourite item in your store right now and why? My favourite item is most definitely our new 5pc bamboo dinner sets. Forest Feast is adorable. We used some of Meeri Anneli’s artwork and the result is divine. I sometime sneakily eat off the sectioned plate at home.. and the little bowl and spoon are perfect for my morning tea snack of yogurt, nuts, seeds and cinnamon concoction. What has been your biggest highlight? Thanks for the nostalgic flashbacks. I’ve had so many highlights, Love Mae has been crazy
like that. I get a bit star struck by amazing designers when I meet them which makes for fun memories. A favourite highlight was buying a magazine when I was in China, I bought it off a little street cart outside a bustling food market. The design of it caught my eye and thought I would find some great inspiration. Flicking through the pages later on at the airport we found an article on Love Mae. I don’t think I’ve ever felt so excited to see us in print. I couldn’t tell you what the article said but one day I’ll get someone to translate it for me.

Tell us a bit about The Club of Odd Volumes, how it was formed and how it works? The Club was formed in 2012. We are a digital direct-to-garment print studio based in Collingwood, Melbourne. Finding a printer who could fire off a small number of tees at a realistic re-selling price, was tough. Realising that other artists wanted this too, we bought a printer and started offering our services. There are no-minimum orders (that’s right we can print just one), no setup costs, full colour, photo quality printing at great re-seller rates. As artists ourselves we try to offer a service that helps everyone create uniquely designed wears that are both achievable and affordable. After a year we launched The Odd Collective to help artists get more exposure. An online curated shop featuring 20 artists who rotate twice a year. This means you don’t need to scroll through thousands of products to find a gem and gives serious artists a platform to get exposure with new customers and retailers. Tell us about yourself and your team at The Club of Odd Volumes? The Club of Odd Volumes consists of Matt (previously a signwriter) and me (a book designer). Matt takes care of all the printing and technical side of production, while I look after the designs, artists and general day to day stuff. We’re not a production line making novelty mugs and mousepads, we are a two person operation making art from the back room of our little apartment.
Can you tell us how you source your artists to participate in The Club of Odd Volumes? Instagram mostly… We either do a shout-out for artists to join or stalk people we love. It is honestly the best and worst part of my job. I get to see so much amazing art but with only 10 spots up for grabs in each rotation, emailing ‘sorry not this time’ is pretty hard. What are you looking for terms of art design? We are not only looking for stuff that is new and exciting, but we like to keep all 20 artists different. Different illustration styles and subject matter. Something for everyone’s taste whether it is cutesy kids, designer homewares or quirky tees. How often do you rotate your artists list? We rotate twice a year. There is a Spring/ Summer intake (Sep – Feb) and a Winter/ Autumn (Mar – Aug). We only rotate 10 artists each time… this way people can still get designs from favourites who are always updating and making new art. What are your top designer tips? One tip only – Be original. My opinion on art is different to Matt’s who’s is different to the next person. Love what you do, always be creating and making. We love to see applicants’ social media or blogs to see their process and development of ideas and what they are super passionate about.
What is your favourite item in the store right now and why? I feel like a mum confessing I have a favourite child. I think my fav is the Yin and Yang tee designed by Meat Sauce. Carl + Lenny. What is the most popular item in store? Our Fish Collection tee. Popular with kids, fishing enthusiasts and the urban crowd. What has been the businesses biggest highlight? I think it would be our recent kickstarter. We were pre-selling our bed sheets and asked a few blogs / magazines to help us advertise our project. What do you foresee as the next big trend? We have to try and gauge what’s going on in both the homewares industry and the t-shirt / fashion world. Ethically and locally made are our main priorities at the moment. What’s next for The Club of Odd Volumes? We are excited to get our shipment of bedding in November and getting ready for Finders Keepers Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney. 2nd chance tables
Chris Booth gives life to custom made furniture using recycled timber from old building sites and structures
Tell us a bit about 2nd Chance Tables and how it was formed? 2nd Chance Tables is a Melbourne-based furniture business specialising in custom pieces made from recycled timber. We just love making furniture pieces with a story. We’ve made tables for Melbourne University Blues Footy Club using their old pavilion flooring which they later auctioned to members for fundraising. And more recently we had a customer approach us with an old table belonging to her grandmother and we were able to incorporate parts of that table with the new one to produce a sentimental piece of furniture for her. There’s something
special about making something useable from buildings or structures that no longer exist. 2nd Chance Tables started about two and half years ago, out of desperation and necessity. It was during the economic downtown in Melbourne. I had been working as a carpenter in the domestic construction industry for about fifteen years and was made redundant. It was a really difficult time to find work in industry and so I used the skills that I had to make some money. My wife and I often reflect on our journey. We started from such humble beginnings, building tables on my mother in-law’s tiny rooftop garden in the
middle of winter and sold them online. You can imagine how miserable and desolate life was for us then. Luckily our furniture was well-received and we were able to find a great workshop to grow the business in. We haven’t looked back. How did your career begin? I’ve always had a huge interest in how things go together. Anything with moving parts or different pieces or adjustable components. This manifested early on in my life coming from a long line of engineers and hands on makers of things. I started labouring casually for a family friend who was a builder
whilst I was in high school and found I had a real knack for house building and loved the process. Straight after year 12 I found a carpentry apprenticeship and began my foray into the wide world of wood. As a traditional carpentry apprenticeship only really covered construction techniques, I definitely had to teach myself most of the finer points of joinery as I went along, so it was a very steep learning curve once I decided to try my hand in the furniture game. Can you tell us how you source your materials for 2nd Chance Tables? Victoria and Melbourne are much more
progressive in appreciating of the beauty of recycled timbers than other states and there are several well stocked timber yards around which I’ve been able to build good relationships with over the years. Sometimes our customers want to incorporate other materials such as power-coated metals which we outsource, or from time to time they’ll bring in some timber from their homes that has a sentimental value to them. What processes are involved in creating your pieces? Lots of back and forth emails and phone calls. Because each piece is custom made
for each client, each new job takes a bit of planning and designing before the actual construction begins. Most of the time our customers contact us with a design concept in mind, it’s either something they’ve seen in a shop or a magazine which they want to re-create and alter. From that point, we discuss pragmatic things such as the size, the number of people it would cater, the room / space that the piece will be going, timbers and the desired finish. Based on that, I would draw a digital rendering which is emailed to the client for editing and approval. continued on next page >
What do you love the most about running your own business? To me it’s much more that the “be your own boss” cliché, which quite frankly means a ton more stress and work than everyone else. It’s the complete ownership of the process that puts a significant and long lasting piece of furniture into a family home. It’s the idea that my wife Hien and I have created this thing from nothing and people seem to genuinely love it. What are your top five designer tips? I’ll throw this question over to my wife… She’ll be much better at answering this than me. • It’s important to design the space to be functional and useable… I’ve often seen stunning glamorous living rooms, expensive couches and rugs but the owners are so concerned about the
preserving the furniture that you’re never really able to relax and enjoy the space. I have a friend who recently bought a white leather couch but she has a two year old toddler… I don’t think it’ll stay white for long. • | Haha, Chris would probably hate me saying this, but when furnishing your house don’t overload on one material. We’ve definitely reached the household timber quota at our place – anymore and it’ll probably start to look like a timber-log cabin! • Don’t be afraid to embrace colour or patterns. I tend to keep static furniture, paint and cabinetry neutral and incorporate colours and patterns through accessories like cushions, rugs, artwork, or light fixtures. These things can be changed easily because I tend to tire of them over time.
• I just love minimalistic and open spaces. I think I’m drawn to it because secretly I’m a hoarder. I can’t help myself - I love stuff. So when we designed our house I made sure we had lots of cupboard space to hide all of our stuff. • Lastly, a beautiful light fixture can transform or set the tone of a room, particularly if it sits over the top of your dining table. Your eyes are naturally drawn to it and it can transform ordinary to extraordinary. What do you consider to be a must have item in your home? Oh, that’s difficult to answer. There’s so many to choose from. My wife loves to cook so a dining table to cater for our friends and family is extremely important. I built us a (200cm x 120cm) table and we’ve been able to squeeze 15 people around it – it helps
when you have bench seats. The other item we couldn’t live without is the couch – we spend a lot of time of that thing although that’s probably to change with the addition of our first baby in a few weeks. What has been your favourite piece you have created? I recently made a change table for our nursery. Surprisingly it was made out of plywood instead of recycled timber. My wife designed it and it incorporates wallpaper and leather. It’s pretty satisfying and sentimental being able to make something specific for our little boy. What has been your biggest highlight? Recently we employed another woodworker on a casual basis, although it may seem like a pedestrian step, it meant a great deal to me about where I was headed with the
business. It also introduced a whole new person’s perspective on furniture design not to mention their fantastic woodworking skills. It’s a great boon at work to be able to discuss what you’re doing as you’re doing it with a likeminded person. What do you foresee as the next big trend? My wife is obsessed with copper and leather at the moment. I imagine a lot of our future concept pieces will be incorporating these materials. According to her, copper enhances the sophistication of timber, while leather can be a nice contrasting material to blend in. I’m yet to be convinced, although people tend to compliment the pieces she creates so she might be on to something – I’ll keep you posted. What’s next for 2nd Chance Tables? It’s a pretty exciting time for us, as our brand
starts to grow we’ve been approached by several cafes and businesses around Melbourne to furnish new venues. That’s something that we hope continues. And over the last year or so we’ve started to make furniture pieces other than tables which provide us more creative opportunities. In the next few weeks we’ll be launching an online store for our off-the-shelf furniture range. A lot of the time customers want neutral and simple pieces, but the online store will allow us to create sample, once-off concepts to demonstrate other possibilities that the customer might not have considered before. After a career change Jasmin Ronaldson created Lemon Canary with her own signature boutique essential oil candles and essentials oils
Tell us a bit about Lemon Canary? Lemon Canary is a boutique intention based gift business based on Australias Gold Coast. Currently I hand make a range of essential oil candles and essential oils. I also have a crystal range, organic chocolates and homewares. I also have some awesome new projects in the works. Tell us about yourself and your background? I was born in Germany and grew up with a Yoga teacher Earth Mother. I spent my childhood dabbling with oils and potions. After school I became a Beauty Therapist and studied Aromatherapy. After working in this industry I embarked on a 13 year career as a long haul flight attendant, during this time I ran a salon on my down time
specialising in natural skincare. After my father became ill in 2009 I decided that life was too short to stay in a job where I was no longer happy and completed my Yoga Teacher Training. During this time I began to dabble in soy candle making due to my own inability to find an essential oil candle to use during meditation. As they say, the rest is history. I left my flying career and have now been running Lemon Canary for four years, I have recently completed my Reiki Healers Course and look forward to all that is to come with Lemon Canary. What sparked you to create Lemon Canary? What sparks me to create all of my products is always my own personal need to fulfill
a product that I can’t find on the market. I had a very tough time in my teenage years and I have a deep desire to try and connect people to make sure they know they are loved, I feel that my products help others to easily transfer their emotions to another person. The world needs love, lots of love. What processes are involved in creating your pieces? It usually starts with a thought of ‘oh wouldn’t that be a great product!’. Then I ponder on it for a few weeks, if the interest is still there a month later I will revisit the idea. I have so many ideas all the time, I have to try and filter the right ones out. continued on next page >
< continued from previous page How do you create the different scents in your candles? I create scents that I love and that make me feel a certain way. For example my Meadowlark candle (Lemongrass) reminds me of a particular hotel I used to stay in when I went to Bangkok, it always makes me feel happy and relaxed as that’s how I used to feel arriving in the lobby after a long flight. What scents are currently available and which is your favourite? I have wonderfully long list of scents, my
current favourite is Wanderer, from my new Luxe Range, it’s floral and citrusy and delicious and has flecks of copper throughout. It’s currently on repeat at my house. What makes your candles stand out from the rest? I use Organic Essential Oils in all of my candles, most other brands use only fragrance oils. I have handmade every single candle that has come out of my studio with love and care. Every wick is perfect, every pour is perfect, so much love in Lemon Canary candles it’s ridiculous.
What do you love the most about having your own label? The ability to have creative control and let my heart speak through my products. The comments I get from my customers about how my products make them feel, that is the ultimate reward. Do you have plans to expand your scent range? Tell us a bit about KEEPRESIN? KEEPRESIN produces a contemporary range of hand crafted resin jewellery, home wares, artwork, lighting and planters. The designs are fresh and striking, celebrating vibrant colour and simplicity in form allowing for complimentary pieces to mix and match. The hand-crafted nature of the products, from the initial design through to the final stages of sanding, ensure that each piece is unique and that no two items will be exactly the same. Tell us about yourself and your background? KEEPRESIN initially started as a hobby whilst I was studying at university. I was doing a Bachelor of Arts (International Studies) at RMIT. I found it a very fascinating course and had dreams of working for the United Nations in New York. However KEEPRESIN was expanding and something had to give so I stopped university with six months to go in my course. This was just over two years ago now and I have never looked back. I have always had an interest in art and this was helped by the fact that my Mum is a Design and Technology teacher and it’s an environment I have always been surrounded by. I think it helps to not only have the creativity but in order to survive in this industry you have to be organised and have business knowledge. This knowledge hasn’t been easy, as I don’t have any higher education training in business, there have been a lot of mistakes along the way but they are what make you stronger and help you more forward. I live on the Mornington Peninsula, with my fiancé and little Cavoodle Fenton. We have just spent the last year renovating our little 60’s house, which has been an amazing process, and something I have thoroughly enjoyed. What sparked you to create KEEPRESIN? As mentioned before my mum is a teacher and did a resin course through work. She then taught my sister and I how to do the basic process and then it has grown from there. The business has grown organically,
exploring different shapes and colours. What we have tried to achieve is to create unique and affordable resin jewellery and homewares. What processes are involved in creating your pieces? Resin is quite a labour intensive material to work with. The initial design and prototypes are made out of clay or something similar. This is then set into silicone, then into the silicone you pour the resin with the colour added. Once the resin has hardened then begins the sanding process where you slowly use lesser and lesser grades of sandpaper in order to achieve a smooth finish. The final
process is to oil the surface so that it brings out the colour and seals it to some extent. What inspires you in your designs? I am continually inspired by my surroundings and where I live. The decision to move into homewares was inspired by the fact that I have bought my new 60’s house. I love organic shapes especially combined with resin, as it’s such a pliable material to work with. The ranges continue to evolve from season to season and I love exploring different colour palettes depending on the season. continued on next page >
< continued from previous page What do you love the most about having your own label? Owning your own business certainly has its ups and downs. It is amazing to have the freedom to be creative and do whatever you would like really. There arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t two days the same, which keeps me inspired and challenged. Who are some of your favourite designers? I find some of my favourite designers are from all over the world. I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t really have any particular in mind. Instagram and Pinterest are two amazing sources where there is an
amazing array of images and sources you can draw inspiration from. What is your favourite item in your store right now and why? I particularly love the lighting that I am working on at the moment. This is a new field for me to branch out into and there is so much scope to creativity. What has been your biggest highlight? There have been a couple of highlights that have occurred in the last years. The first would have to be stocking to the National Gallery of Victoria. This is such an honour. Another honour has been stocking to the beautiful store Fenton and Fenton. I am so
humbled to be amongst such a talented artists and in such an iconic store. Fenton and Fenton have been on my list of desired stores since the business started. What are your plans for the future? KEEPRESIN will continue to expand in Australia. Over the next two years we are hoping to expand overseas and hopefully break into the American market. Busy mum of four, Rachael Harland has made it her business to make people smile Tell us a bit about your business? I have a shop full of terrariums, from floor to ceiling. I just love them, each one is different and once they are made, they thrive on neglect. The shop is relatively new, only opened six months ago. I have been working from home for the last four years developing my little business. Tell us about yourself and your background? I’m a 36 year old mumma and wife. My background has been in deciding to raise my family young. I dreamed of having children and family from a young age. I suppose I have done things reverse to what the world says one should do, but that was my dream. As my children grow older, I pursued my creative and artistic interests while returning to university to study teaching. What sparked you to create your business? It started with finding a book in the op-shop published in 1973 on terrariums. I had been a stay-at-home mum for some time and was at the studying my Early Childhood degree. When my youngest child started prep, I had more time on my hands and needed something I enjoyed. Both of my boys have been diagnosed with Autism so making terrariums was a creative outlet that provided my calm. After lots of trial and error we applied for design markets in Melbourne and took our terrariums to pop-up stores at Westfield and Chadstone Shopping Centres. Earlier this year when our little poppet (child #4, who is our foster daughter) left our care, we were at a cross roads. It was decision time. We could build a shed and I keep working from home or open a shop close to the children’s school. Hubby and I opted to open the shop. A few weeks later we had our little poppet back! Life is certainly busy.
What processes are involved in creating your pieces? The escapism and imagination of a Little Land is always front of my mind. Each piece is unique, in saying that, there are always the customers favourites. Everyone loves Alice in Wonderland and the Woodland Terrariums. The process ranges from ensuring all the glassware and materials are as clean as possible, sourcing the miniatures, visiting plant growers and the physical making. The business side like answering emails, keeping receipts etc has been a big learning curve for me. I’m the creative one, perhaps not always thinking logically... thankfully my husband comes to the rescue. What inspires you in your designs? I think for me it is creating a piece that one can look into and their worries escape them for a moment in time. Bringing a smile to someone’s face and a sense of wonder is such a nice thing. Plants are beautiful and amazing creations in themselves, to encapsulate them in a miniature eco-system is fascinating and allows inspiration to stop and look and appreciate creation. What do you love the most about having your own label? I feel so thankful, this is something I never thought I would do. Having my own label is pretty humbling, I am no more special than anyone else. It is nice though that if someone sees a terrarium they wonder if it is a Little Lands terrarium, and people are recognising our designs as unique. We are not about a succulent in a jar – that is not a terrarium. Terrariums have lids, always. Who are some of your favourite designers? Mmm... these days I am loving simplicity. The
designers that come to mind are Charles and Ray Eames. As for local designers it is about relationship for me. I love individual designs, stuff no-one else is doing. Treads and Pedals are amazing and the craftsmanship of Plank and Trestle is amazing. They are gorgeous, gorgeous people too. What is your favourite item in your store right now and why? Something I created just recently, it is a huge rose bowl garden with a festival inside. What has been your biggest highlight? We were in The Age newspaper in August and on 3AW’s Big Backyard with Jane Edmonston and Darren James. That was pretty exciting. I must say though, coming into the shop every morning after bringing the children to school is a highlight for me. Entering a fresh white space filled with plants – it feels great. What are your plans for the future? The immediate future I have a few designs up my sleeve, but need a handyman or craftsman to help me with that. We will be at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden show next March, and flat out until then at various markets and events. Is there anything else you would like to tell us about your business? I love it. I love being blessed to work with plants each day and make people smile when they look into each vessel and realise there is a story inside. It’s priceless.
