ANNUAL REPORT

2022
JULY 1, 2021-JUNE 30, 2022

Thanks and Optimism Thank you!

For your support and engagement with the Community House.

During the last year, the Community House has been able to serve more people from Winnetka and surrounding communities in many ways. The Community House is the special place that brings people from Winnetka and neighboring communities together. It’s the place for us to gather, unite, belong, and grow through enter tainment, performing arts, education, sports, fitness, meeting and rental space, celebration events, and activities for those of all ages and interests. Given how rare this is across the country, we should feel a sense of pride and good fortune that we have the Community House in Winnetka.

Thanks to the extended team that makes this promise come to life. This starts with the Community House President Amy Skalinder and her exceptional team who bring an unparalleled commitment to ensuring a wonderful experience for all Community House guests.

In addition, the Woman’s Board continues to provide extraordinary support through events such as the Antiques + Modernism Show and the Home Tour as

FOUNDED IN 1911

The Community House is a non-profit organization promoting sports, education, and performing arts programming for children and adults. The historic building features a fitness center, theater, rental space and garden.

As an independent 501(c)(3) we receive no tax dollars and rely on donations, memberships and program fees to sustain our organization.

We are proud to have served generations of Winnetka residents and North Shore families.

Dear Friends,

Looking back to July of 2021, when our fiscal year began, we were still continuously evaluating our operations to manage the lingering constraints of COVID-19. What a change we’ve experienced since then!

We’ve delivered more programming than ever before (including a whole new collection of programs for adults), celebrated live theater’s return to our stage, hosted a record-breaking number of weddings and other celebrations, welcomed more members returning to our Fitness Center, and even launched a free live music series in our garden! All of this is a testament to you — everyone in our community — and the love you all have for this special organization that brings people closer not only to their goals, but to each other.

We are so grateful to get to work with the rising stars, the budding artists, the future first round draft picks, and people of all ages looking to explore their interests.

For many, the Community House is where it all starts.

And what we see over time, again and again, is that so much more happens here — behind the basketball skills and the new hobbies and the daily workouts, people are gaining confidence, engaging in their community, and making deep connections.

This year has been all about coming back — back to a rhythm of normalcy and back to being together, right here at the Community House. Thank you for your continued support! You make the Community House what it is, and we’re so glad you’re here with us.

President’s Message

HOUSE HIGHLIGHTS

Fascinating new adult programs brought neighbors together, including a Lyric Opera preview, cocktail classes, and floral arranging workshops.

246 young children learned teamwork and expanded their skills in our popular youth basketball house league, and over 500 more improved motor skills and made friends through our other youth sports programs.

Over 600 children found their confidence and star power through our School of Dance and Skyline Children’s Theater programs.

The Children’s Theatre of Winnetka once again dazzled audiences and was voted Best Children’s Theater by Better magazine for the 5th year in a row.

The Woman’s Board and Junior Board engaged over 130 volunteers and raised over $115,000 through incredible events that brought the community together while supporting the Community House.

Families came together to laugh and bond at a variety of events exploring the wonder of magic, the thrill of BMX bike acrobatics, and the joy of live music.

Over 150 units of life-saving blood were donated through blood drives facilitated by the American Red Cross.

Fitness Center members came in for over 47,000 workouts, maintaining their strength and mobility and staying healthy in stressful times.

We hosted 61 celebrations of milestones and life events, including 48 weddings for couples who made treasured memories in our beautiful garden as they embarked on a new life together.

Over 100 groups — ranging from non-profit organizations to local businesses — chose the Community House as their home for meetings, seminars, and special gatherings.

FINANCIAL

July 1, 2021-June 30, 2022

Thank you for your continued support of the Community House.

Unlike a tax-supported park district or library, the independent, non-profit Community House is unique – literally supported by the members of the very community it serves. Every activity, performance, and gathering that takes place in the House – from the Fitness Center to Matz Hall to the gymnasium, from our beautiful multi-purpose rooms to our historic garden – is made possible by donations from community members who sustain this vital organization’s mission.
