Today Is A New Day…So What Are You Going To Do With It? by Gary Miller |
A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. – Lao Tzu
All of us have started journeys in our lives. Small and large we’ve charted new paths in the pursuit of something better. Whatever the area of our lives, when we step out on a new journey it’s as if we reconfigure time, change the calendar, and boldly proclaim “Today is new day!” That is an honest statement when we make it. You and I aren’t lying to ourselves when we say today is a new day as we chart our course on a new journey. It’s a funny thing, our dreams don’t have the first clue about our past. They don’t know anything about repeated failures. They know nothing of our disappointments. They know about the raw gift that is right
now and the power that this moment can project into the future. The hope of today is a new day is fueled by us paying attention to right now and optimistically looking towards the future like a child on Christmas Eve anxiously awaiting presents, cookies, and snow.
Today Is A New Day But It’s Not For The Faint Of Heart Believe it or not danger lives in the thrill of the today is a new day idea. The danger in the raw enthusiasm about our new journey is that is starts like a rocket ship burning with maximum output. Without other critical ingredients it will burn itself out. We don’t have to look hard to prove this concept. Look back at the various journeys you’ve started. Diet plans, workout strategies, financial goals, or business ventures. You had all that energy when you started but what happened? It fizzled. More than likely it fizzled when things got hard. When the workout hurt, the diet didn’t taste so good, or the business opportunity wasn’t producing. We’ve all been there.
Today Is A New Day But It Requires Some Strategy
Today is a brand new day but we need some strategy to make the most of it. There are three very simple strategies that if practiced, can not only add more fire to your brand new day but sustain it even when things get rough on your new journey which they will. Today Is A New Day Not A Speed Race There are universal laws to failure. One of them, regardless of the endeavor being pursued, is people try to take on way too much, way too fast and in the process burn out. This happens either due to being overwhelmed or because they expect way too many results too fast. Unrealistic expectations is the first fruit of going to fast. Your new journey stands a great chance of surviving when you slow down. That doesn’t mean curb your enthusiasm but it does mean take one single step at a time. Today Is A New Day But It Needs Education Excitement about something new will only burn so hot for so long. A key sustaining fuel is education. Learn about your new journey but remember to do it in a methodical way. Reading fifteen different books at once is not the way to go. Trying ten different strategies for your online business is a gigantic mistake. Remember our first secret, slow down? If you try to take in too much, too fast, you’ll just choke. Success in general is a marathon not a sprint. Embracing the reality that today is a new day requires that you are ready to learn, learn, and learn more. Learn from mistakes, learn from successes, and learn from others. Today Is A New Day Isn’t A Solo Sport Another universal law of failure is attempting to start a new journey all by yourself. Nothing can help on the most dreary and discouraging days like the support of others who are on a similar path to you. Take fitness for example. Have you ever noticed that when you regularly work out with someone else, it’s easier to keep going? No man or woman is an island. Find others who are walking the same journey as you. Lean on them and be there for them when they need someone to lean on. Sometimes the best medicine when we’re down is to hear from a trusted resource that today is a new day. It helps us get back on track.
Today Is A New Day Embrace It You may not be starting a new journey today but chances are you will soon. An exercise I have done countless times with clients over the years is to have them sit down and write out what journeys they would like to start. Give this a try. Don’t get hung up on the how. Instead get excited about the start. Remember the education tactic will help you with the how. Maybe it’s losing weight. Starting a new fitness routine. Breaking out of cubicle death and finally being your own boss. Whatever it is, go after it. No regrets. Today is a new day.
