The Best Travel Advice You’ll Ever Find… Be Nice To People by Gary Miller |
I just got back from the beautiful city of Denver Colorado. I spent the last four days there with roughly six thousand other entrepreneurs. The entire experience was electric.
As we all know though, half the fun allegedly is getting there and my journey to Denver like so many other business trips was loaded with delays and typical travel hassles. As I was navigating various airports, shuttles, and car rentals I couldn’t help but notice how many of my fellow travelers were nasty and rude to people around them. They were snippy with fellow travelers, rude to airline staff, overly demanding of flight attendants, and basically walked around sour. What gives?
The Best Travel Advice In Existence.. Be Nice To People! I hear you out there. Be nice to people? That’s the advice? Yes it is! Being nice to people won’t make the maintenance crew fix the plane faster but it will keep your blood pressure down. Being nice probably won’t make your lost bags show up faster but it will help you to be someone that people like to be around. When did we get so hung up on ourselves that we allowed blatant rudeness to take over? I say today we make a pact. It doesn’t matter if we’re taking a day trip or a two week vacation, we agree right here, right now, to stop being jerks and begin to be nice to people especially when things are going wrong.
Understand These Realities and You’ll It’s Easy To Be Nice To People Planes get delayed. Stop whining, yelling at the desk staff, and pouting like a little baby. It’s a reality of travel. Get over it. Read a book, listen to a Podcast, buy a cheesy gift for your family, or just start up a conversation with someone. Do something but please stop acting totally shocked and dismayed when delays happen. Running late, being rushed and frazzled is almost ALWAYS your fault. You don’t want to be rushed? Get out of bed earlier. Storming the check-in area expecting the sea to part for you because you’re a lazy ass doesn’t work.
Being rude to airport/airline/customer service staff at any level is unacceptable. You’re an adult right? Then use some logic. The checkin counter staff hasn’t been plotting a conspiracy against you personally so that your entire trip would be ruined. Most of the time they are doing the very best they can. Even if they are not, don’t sink to the level of childish name calling and screaming. When we see kids do that on the playground it’s called a tantrum. When we see you doing it Mr. or Mrs. adult at the ticket counter, we just think you’re lame. Airport food is not a 5 star restaurant so stop ordering like it. Get over yourself and your so called fine tastes. Order the basics and go. Getting mad at the food kiosk help because they didn’t get your bagel cream cheese just right is ridiculous. Remember where you are, grab a bite, and press on. If you don’t like that, pack your own. There’s a nifty system called checking your bag. Use it! Bringing your giant bag onto the plane and clogging up everything because you’re trying to maneuver it into the overhead bin is rude to your fellow travelers and the airline staff. Stop. Be Nice To People By Helping Them. If you see a Mom with four kids struggling with bags, offer to help her. Let people go ahead of you. The few minutes you take to help others will do wonders for your own heart, attitude, and trip. When you’re nice to people when you travel it ALWAYS makes your trip better.
