I Need A Break | 3 Signs It’s Time To Step Away and Reset by Gary Miller | Are you saying to yourself right now, “I need a break?” I’m with you. I had a hell of a day yesterday. It ended a little after 10:00 p.m. last night with a single statement to my wife. “Honey, I need a break!” It was one of those days where the deck just seemed to be stacked against me. You know the ones. The ones where despite your very best intentions you can’t seem to get ahead of things. I was right on the verge of just throwing something into the wall last night. Instead I recognized where I was, what was happening, and voiced to my wife, “I need a break.” Here are a few signs you might want to unplug from whatever you’re doing for a bit to regain your composure and perspective.
I Need A Break Symptom #1 You Are Seeing The Negative In Everything and Nothing Positive It’s easy to get sucked into the negativity train. Everyone does it from time to time. It’s not earth shattering or detrimental until you start spouting that negativity in every direction, at everyone, and fail to to see any positives. This is normally accompanied by refusal to hear anyone when they are attempting to shine a bright light on things. If you’re in the vortex of negative crabbiness just admit it. Say it with me, “I need a break.”
I Need A Break Symptom #2 You Are Flirting With Reactionary Exit Strategies
When we have bad days where things are hurting we naturally want to run away the pain source. Again, totally normal. However if we start to entertain ideas of of making radical, sweeping, reactionary moves such as quitting a project, relationship, or any other path because of a few isolated bad events, it’s time to step back. Again, say it with me, “I need a break.”
I Need A Break Symptom #3 You Are Beginning To Isolate Pity parties generally are lonely affairs. A MAJOR sign that you need a break is if you begin to isolate from others. When your friends, spouse, coworkers, are all wondering what’s up with you because you’re acting like a depressed hermit, it’s time for you to admit it. You know the drill, say it with me, “I need a break.”
Saying I Need A Break Doesn’t Make You Weak… It Makes You Self Aware Taking a break can mean walking away from your desk for 15 minutes or stepping away from a project for a couple of days. You know what you need. In my case I started resetting from my disaster day after about 12 hours. I stayed offline, played with my kids, and sorted myself out. Then, I was ready to plug in and get back to work. Take what you need and get back in the game. Taking a break will ALWAYS be a better alternative than quitting. Bad days can and will happen. Remember it really is ok to say, “I need a break.” Do you want to learn how to share your stories and ideas with others and actually get paid for it? Crazy huh?
