INDIVIDUAL NOTES COACH SMITH: D.J. Smith was introduced as the Senators' 14th head coach in franchise history on 5/23/19. A native of Windsor, Ont., Smith spent the four previous NHL seasons as an assistant coach with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Prior to joining the Maple Leafs (which was also the team for which he made his NHL playing debut in 1996-97), Smith guided the Ontario Hockey League's Oshawa Generals to a record of 135-53-3-13 over three campaigns which included his having been recognized as the OHL’s Coach of the Year in 2013-14. One year later, he helped the team capture the Mastercard Memorial Cup. His 26 head coaching victories with Ottawa see him rank ninth in franchise history. FOUR ALTERNATES FOR NOW: In conjunction with the start of the team's 2020-21 training camp, the Senators announced that the team would deploy four full-time alternate captains this season in Thomas Chabot, Erik Gudbranson, Derek Stepan and Brady Tkachuk. For Stepan, the Senators mark the third club for which he has sported the 'A' following his time with the New York Rangers and Arizona Coyotes. For Gudbranson, the Orleans, Ont. native and third overall selection in the 2010 NHL Draft, the Senators represent the first NHL club for which he has worn an 'A'. Chabot and Tkachuk, who were selected by the club (in 2015 and 2018) are serving as fulltime alternates for the first time in their respective careers. Both players concluded last season as alternates following the 2/24/20 trade of Jean-Gabriel Pageau and the mid-Feb. injury of Mark Borowiecki. READY FOR TAKEOFF: The Senators hope to reverse a string of recent Jets success against their club tonight which has seen Winnipeg claim victories in six of the last eight games in which these two teams have faced-off since the 2016-17 season. A game-winning tally by Chiasson on 3/30/16 saw the Senators emerge with a 2-1 victory at MTS Centre in what would prove to be their final victory over Winnipeg until 2/9/19 when goals from Stone (2x), Dzingel, Duchene and Smith saw Ottawa earn a 5-2 win at Canadian Tire Centre, nearly three full years after their last victory against the Jets. Following a combined deficit of 10-3 in two Senators' losses last season, the club is looking to start this year's season-series with a victory as the two teams have not split wins in a season-series since the 2014-15 campaign when a two-game set saw Ottawa claim three of four points following a 2-1 shootout loss on 11/8/14 and a 3-1 victory on 3/4/15.
