The Winnipeg Jets finish their six-game pre-season slate on Friday night when they visit the Calgary Flames in the return match of their home-and-home set. The Jets defeated the Flames 3-2 on Wednesday night in Winnipeg. The Jets went 2-0-1 in their three pre-season games at home, while they are 0-2-0 on the road so far.

The Jets made 11 roster cuts on Monday, reducing the training camp roster to two goaltenders, 10 defencemen and 16 forwards. With three injuries, the Jets need to reduce their roster by at least three more players before Monday’s roster deadline. Winnipeg went 6-2-1 against the Flames last season, including winning their final two games at Scotiabank Saddledome. With the Jets finishing the pre-season on the road and playing their first three games of the regular season on the road, Winnipeg doesn’t play at Canada Life Centre again until Oct. 21 in their home opener against the Anaheim Ducks.

Four members of the Jets have reached double digit shot totals so far in the pre-season, led by Nikolaj Ehlers’ 13 shots. Evegny Svechnikov and Kyle Connor are one shot behind Ehlers.

The Jets are averaging three goals per game during the pre-season. Last season, the Jets were 12th in the NHL with an average of 3.04 goals per game.

After dropping both games on the road last weekend, the Jets returned home on Wednesday and beat the Calgary Flames 3-2. Nikolaj Ehlers paced the Jets with a pair of goals, while Josh Morrissey had Winnipeg’s other marker. Ehlers also led the Jets with seven shots. Brenden Dillon dished out a team-high four hits. Adam Lowry went 16-for-25 in the face-off circle and played 23:58 on Wednesday, which is two minutes more than his regular season career high from 2016. Connor Hellebuyck made 16 saves for his second win of the pre-season.

Jansen Harkins leads the Jets in scoring in the pre-season with five points (2G, 3A) in five games. All five of his points have come at home so far, including three points (1G, 2A) on Sept. 29 vs. Edmonton. He’s also pacing the Jets with a plus-four rating in the pre-season. Harkins had two points (1G, 1A) in 26 games last season.

Winnipeg Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff made two trades during the off-season to bolster the team’s defensive unit, acquiring Brenden Dillon from the Washington Capitals and Nate Schmidt from the Vancouver Canucks. Dillion, who was acquired for a pair of second-round draft picks, is entering his 11th NHL season after going undrafted. He enters the regular season having played 654 games with the Dallas Stars, San Jose Sharks, and Washington Capitals. Schmidt, who was acquired for a third-round draft pick, is entering his 10th season after also not being drafted. He’s appeared in 450 games with Washington, Vegas and Vancouver. The Jets also signed four forward free agents, including 10-season NHL veteran Riley Nash.

The Jets begin their season by playing six of their first eight games on the road, including five in California. Winnipeg opens the campaign on Oct. 13 at Anaheim before playing San Jose on Oct. 16 and Minnesota on Oct. 19. The Jets host Anaheim on Oct. 21 in the team’s home opener. After playing mostly on the road in October, the Jets start November with a seven-game homestand from Nov. 2-16. The Jets longest road trip of the season is five games from Jan. 29-Feb. 27, which is interrupted by the all-star and Olympic break. After playing in the all-Canadian North Division last season, the Jets return to the Central Division this season for 26 games, as the division now numbers eight teams with the addition of the Arizona Coyotes. January is the busiest month, with the Jets playing 15 games, six at home and nine on the road. Winnipeg plays 11 back-to-backs this season: nine feature a pair of road games and two are consecutive games at Canada Life Centre. Tuesday is the busiest day for the Jets with the team playing 17 times, including four straight Tuesdays in March. The Jets play two straight games versus an opponent only once, a home-and-home set against their 2021 Stanley Cup Playoff First Round opponent, the Edmonton
The Jets swept the Edmonton Oilers in the first round of the 2021 Stanley Cup Playoffs in earn the first sweep in franchise history. The final three games were decided in overtime, including Game 4 that went to triple overtime. In the second round, the Jets were swept by the Montreal Canadiens to end their season. Kyle Connor led the Jets in scoring in the playoffs with three goals and seven points in eight games. Of the 22 skaters that appeared in a playoff game, 18 had at least a point and 13 scored a goal. Goaltender Connor Hellebuyck posted a 2.23 goalsagainst average and .931 save percentage in playing all eight games.

Of the 27 skaters that suited up for the Jets last season, 19 return this season and are in training camp. Starting goaltender Connor Hellebuyck returns to headline the group of five goaltenders in camp. Hellebuyck has played in 289 of Winnipeg’s 373 games (77.5%) in the past five regular seasons. Winnipeg’s training camp roster features seven Minnesota natives, led by captain Blake Wheeler, who is from Plymouth.

The Jets must wait until Dec. 9 to play the NHL’s newest team, the Seattle Kraken, at Climate Pledge Arena before hosting them on Jan. 8 and Apr. 13. It’s an even longer wait for the Jets before they face the two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning as they meet in Winnipeg on Mar. 8 and then in Tampa Bay on Apr. 16.

The Jets made four selections at the 2021 NHL Draft in July, selected one American, one Belarusian, and two Russians. Winnipeg selected Chaz Lucius 18th overall after he posted 20 points (13G, 7A) in 13 games with the United States U-18 team. He’s about to embark on his freshman season at the University of Minnesota. In the second round, the Jets chose Russian forward Nikita Chibrikov, who has already started his season in the KHL with SKA St. Petersburg. Winnipeg chose defenceman Dmitry Kuzmin from Belarus in the third round. After playing in Belarus last season, he’s joining the OHL’s Flint Firebirds this season. The Jets went back to Russia in the fifth round to select Dmitri Rashvesky, who is off to a hot start in the KHL with nine points (4G, 5A) in six games for Dynamo Moscow.

The Manitoba Moose went 18-13-5 in 36 games during a shortened AHL campaign last season, during which they played only Canadian teams and the Calgary-based Stockton Heat. Nineteen-year-old Cole Perfetti is the top returning scorer for the Moose after posting 26 points (9G, 17A) in 32 games in his first pro season. Jeff Malott, who signed with the Jets during the off-season, led the team in goals with 14 in 34 games. The Moose enter the 2021-22 season with a new bench boss, as Mark Morrison takes over for Pascal Vincent, who joined the Columbus Blue Jackets as their associate coach. Manitoba begins their season on Oct. 16 at Toronto.
