TONIGHT’S OPPONENT: WINNIPEG JETS The San Jose Sharks (0-0-0, 0 pts) face the Winnipeg Jets at home in their first game of the 2021-22 season. The Sharks will play three home games in October, two against Winnipeg, as they depart on a five-game road trip with stops in Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Boston and Nashville. The Sharks and Jets did not play at all during the shortened 2020-21 campaign. In 2019-20, San Jose held a 1-2-0 record, winning in their lone road contest on Feb. 14, 2020. All-time vs. Winnipeg, the Sharks are 21-9-2-3. UPCOMING MILESTONES Rudolfs Balcers: 8 games played from 100 NHL games played Matt Nieto: 9 assists from 100 NHL assists MODEL OF CONSISTENCY Since being named the team’s general manager on May 13, 2003, Doug Wilson has strategically built the San Jose Sharks into one of the NHL’s top franchises through strong drafting, shrewd trades and timely free agent signings. In his 19 seasons in charge of the Sharks hockey department, Wilson has guided the team to its most successful era since the franchise’s inception, capturing a Presidents’ Trophy (2009), five Pacific Division titles, advancing to the Western Conference Final on five occasions (2004, 2010, 2011, 2016, 2019) and appearing in the Stanley Cup Final (2016). In his tenure as general manager, no other franchise has more wins than the Sharks (731): RANK

WILLIAM’S WORLD William Eklund can make his debut on Oct. 16 against the Winnipeg Jets. At 19 years and 6 days old, the Haninge, Sweden native can become the fifth youngest player to ever debut for San Jose (Patrick Marleau, 18-16; Vlastimil Kroupa, 18-162; Jeff Friesen, 18-168; Milan Michalek, 18-306) and the youngest to do so since Milan Michalek in 2003. The seventh overall selection in the 2021 NHL Draft led all Sharks skaters in preseason points with six (1g, 5a). ROOKIES JOIN THE RANKS Seven rookies have made the Sharks’ final 23-man roster. San Jose leads the NHL with four rostered players that have yet to play an NHL game ( Jonathan Dahlen, William Eklund, Santeri Hatakka and Jasper Weatherby). Jonah Gadjovich, Jake Middleton and Lane Pederson are the other rookies who made the team. Per NHL PR, this could be the first time in franchise history and the first time since Oct. 4, 2018 (DET: Christoffer Ehn, Dennis Cholowski, Filip Hronek, Michael Rasmussen, Libor Sulak) that four or more players for the same team can make their NHL debut in a seasonopening game. NEW NAMES IN NET San Jose’s opening night 2021-22 roster features two goaltenders that were not with the organization in the previous season. Adin Hill, 25, arrived in San Jose via trade from Arizona on July 17. Hill featured in 19 games for the Coyotes in 2020-21, finishing with a 9-9-1 record, a 2.74 goals-againstaverage and a .913 save percentage. James Reimer, 33, begins his second stint in San Jose after signing a two-year contract with the club on July 28. Reimer held a .906 save percentage, a 2.66 goals-against-average and a 15-5-2 record in 22 appearances last season with the Carolina Hurricanes. BLAME IT ON THE BOOGIE Since Bob Boughner took over coaching duties on Dec. 11, 2019, San Jose has manned the tenth ranked penalty killing unit (81.3%) in the league. San Jose is also tied-eighth with eight shorthanded goals in that span. GOALS, GOALS AND MORE GOALS Defenseman Brent Burns enters the 2021-22 season at 19th all-time in career NHL goals by a defenseman with 217. His seven goals during the 202021 campaign helped him pass hall of famer Brad Park (213). Burns is three goals away from Sergei Gonchar. DOMINANT DEFENSE Since 2013-14, Brent Burns (483) and Erik Karlsson (462) are first and second, respectively, among League defensemen in points scored. Burns also paces all defensemen in goals (142) and even strength goals (97). Karlsson (362) and Burns (341) also rank first and second, respectively, in League assists. HOW THE SHARKS WERE BUILT NHL Entry Draft (9) Vlasic Couture Hertl Labanc Meier Weatherby Ferraro Hatakka Eklund Free Agents (7) Cogliano Reimer

In 2020-21, Bordeleau was named as the first recipient of the Sharks Prospect of the Year award. FISH IN FORM…Brandon Coe has begun the 2021-22 season with six points (3g, 3a) through three games with the North Bay Battalion (OHL). Coe sits tied-second among league skaters in scoring and is tied-third in power play goals (1) and plus-minus (plus-4). Coe recorded one goal and four shots across two games for the Sharks in the 2021 Rookie Faceoff Tournament in Arizona.
