Scene Setter The Winnipeg Jets finish a seven-game homestand on Tuesday night when they welcome the Edmonton Oilers to Canada Life Centre for the first time this season. The Jets are 4-1-1 during the homestand after a 3-2 overtime win against the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday. Winnipeg plays in Edmonton on Thursday in their first road game of November.

Since missing three games due to illness, goaltender Connor Hellebuyck has stopped 84 of 89 shots for a .944 save percentage. After losing his first three starts of the season, Hellebuyck has gone 5-0-2 with a 2.11 goals-against average and .934 save percentage.

After playing mostly on the road in October, the Jets start November with a seven-game homestand from Nov. 2-16. The Jets longest road trip of the season is five games from Jan. 29-Feb. 27, which is interrupted by the all-star and Olympic break. After playing in the all-Canadian North Division last season, the Jets return to the Central Division this season for 26 games, as the division now numbers eight teams with the addition of the Arizona Coyotes. January is the busiest month, with the Jets playing 15 games, six at home and nine on the road. Winnipeg plays 11 back-to-backs this season: nine feature a pair of road games and two are consecutive games at Canada Life Centre. Tuesday is the busiest day for the Jets with the team playing 17 times, including four straight Tuesdays in March. The Jets play two straight games versus an opponent only once, a home-and-home set against their 2021 Stanley Cup Playoff First Round opponent, the Edmonton Oilers, Nov. 16 at Canada Life Centre and Nov. 18 at Rogers Place. The Jets must wait until Dec. 9 to play the NHL’s newest team, the Seattle Kraken, at Climate Pledge Arena before hosting them on Jan. 8 and Apr. 13. It’s an even longer wait for the Jets before they face the two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning as they meet in Winnipeg on Mar. 8 and then in Tampa Bay on Apr. 16.

Winnipeg Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff made two trades during the off-season to bolster the team’s defensive unit, acquiring Brenden Dillon from the Washington Capitals and Nate Schmidt from the Vancouver Canucks. Dillion, who was acquired for a pair of second-round draft picks, is entering his 11th NHL season after going undrafted. He enters the regular season having played 654 games with the Dallas Stars, San Jose Sharks, and Washington Capitals. Schmidt, who was acquired for a third-round draft pick, is entering his 10th season after also not being drafted. He’s appeared in 450 games with Washington, Vegas and Vancouver. The Jets also signed four forward free agents, including 10-season NHL veteran Riley Nash.

The Jets made four selections at the 2021 NHL Draft in July, selected one American, one Belarusian, and two Russians. Winnipeg selected Chaz Lucius 18th overall after he posted 20 points (13G, 7A) in 13 games with the United States U-18 team. He’s embarking on his freshman season at the University of Minnesota, where he has three points (1G, 2A) in six games In the second round, the Jets chose Russian forward Nikita Chibrikov, who has 16 points (9G, 7A) in 14 games with SKA-Neva St. Petersburg in the VHL and has appeared in four games with SKA St. Petersburg in the KHL.

Winnipeg chose defenceman Dmitry Kuzmin from Belarus in the third round. After playing in Belarus last season, he’s joined the OHL’s Flint Firebirds this season where he has seven points (1G, 6A) in nine games. The Jets went back to Russia in the fifth round to select Dmitri Rashvesky, who has 24 points (14G, 10A) in 27 games with Dynamo Moscow.

The Manitoba Moose split a pair of games against the Grand Rapids Griffins this past weekend to move to 7-5-1 on the season, which places them third in the Central Division. David Gustafsson (3G, 7A) and Ville Heinola (1G, 9A) lead the Moose in scoring through 13 games with 10 points, while Mikey Eyssimont has a team-best five goals. The Moose host the Milwaukee Admirals at Canada Life Centre on Thursday, Friday and Sunday this week.

The Jets are an even 2-2-2 on the road this season. After Tuesday’s game, Winnipeg plays five of their next six games on the road. The Jets went 17-10-1 on the road last season, which was tied for seventh in the NHL. The Jets were 9-4-0 in their last 13 road games last season and lost consecutive games on the road just twice. Winnipeg’s .625 points percentage on the road last season is the best in franchise history and the first time it’s better than .600.

The Jets had one of the best power plays in the NHL last season and finished seventh at 23.0%. The team’s penalty kill came in at 80.5%, which was good for 13th. It’s the first time in three seasons the Jets penalty kill finished the season at better than 80%.

The first two meetings are part of a home-and-home, which begins Tuesday in Winnipeg and ends Thursday in Edmonton. The Jets won the final three games of the series in overtime, including Game 4 at Canada Life Centre in triple overtime. Winnipeg Jets: Head Coach and Player Bios Head Coach: Paul Maurice Paul Maurice, 54, is in his eighth season as head coach of the Winnipeg Jets after being appointed to the position on January 12, 2014. Under Maurice, the Jets have gone 310-216-60, for a .580 points percentage. He has the most wins by a head coach in franchise history. Maurice became the second-youngest NHL coach to earn 500 wins after a 8-2 victory over Florida on January 13, 2015. Edmonton Oilers: Head Coach and Player Bios Head Coach: Dave Tippett Dave Tippett, 59, became the Oilers 16th head coach all-time on May 28, 2019. Tippett enters his third season as the Oilers head coach. In his first season as Oilers head coach, Tippett led the team to an 83-point season and a 37-25-9 record, finishing second in the Pacific Divison. Tippett was instrumental in helping the Oilers qualify for the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs, for the first time since 2016-17 and has led the team to the postseason for three straight years. Prior to joining the Oilers, Tippett was a head coach in the NHL for 15 seasons (2002-2017), with Dallas and Phoenix/Arizona, posting a career record of 553-413-28-102 in 1,114 games, for a 0.563 winning percentage.
