After playing in the all-Canadian North Division last season, the Jets return to the Central Division this season for 26 games, as the division now numbers eight teams with the addition of the Arizona Coyotes. January is the busiest month, with the Jets playing 15 games, six at home and nine on the road. Tuesday is the busiest day for the Jets with the team playing 17 times, including four straight Tuesdays in March. The Jets must wait until Dec. 9 to play the NHL’s newest team, the Seattle Kraken, at Climate Pledge Arena before hosting them on Jan. 8 and Apr. 13. It’s an even longer wait for the Jets before they face the two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning as they meet in Winnipeg on Mar. 8 and then in Tampa Bay on Apr. 16.

Winnipeg Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff made two trades during the off-season to bolster the team’s defensive unit, acquiring Brenden Dillon from the Washington Capitals and Nate Schmidt from the Vancouver Canucks. Dillion, who was acquired for a pair of second-round draft picks, is entering his 11th NHL season after going undrafted. He enters the regular season having played 654 games with the Dallas Stars, San Jose Sharks, and Washington Capitals. Schmidt, who was acquired for a third-round draft pick, is entering his 10th season after also not being drafted. He’s appeared in 450 games with Washington, Vegas and Vancouver. The Jets also signed four forward free agents, including 10-season NHL veteran Riley Nash.

July, selected one American, one Belarusian, and two Russians. Winnipeg selected Chaz Lucius 18th overall after he posted 20 points (13G, 7A) in 13 games with the United States U-18 team. He’s embarking on his freshman season at the University of Minnesota, where he has three points (1G, 2A) in eight games. In the second round, the Jets chose Russian forward Nikita Chibrikov, who has 16 points (9G, 7A) in 15 games with SKA-Neva St. Petersburg in the VHL, four points (2G, 2A) in two games with SKA-1946 St. Petersburg in ther MHL, and has appeared in four games with SKA St. Petersburg in the KHL. Winnipeg chose defenceman Dmitry Kuzmin from Belarus in the third round. After playing in Belarus last season, he’s joined the OHL’s Flint Firebirds this season where he has 10 points (1G, 9A) in 13 games. The Jets went back to Russia in the fifth round to select Dmitri Rashvesky, who has 28 points (16G, 12A) in 32 games with Dynamo Moscow.

The Manitoba Moose have won three of their past four games. The Moose are 9-6-1 this season, which places them third in the Central Division. David Gustafsson (5G, 8A) leads the Moose in scoring through 16 games with 13 points. Manitoba hosts the Texas Stars on Saturday and Sunday afternoon this weekend.

The Jets haven’t registered a shutout this season, but have been shut out twice. Winnipeg had five shutouts last season. Four of the five shutouts came on the road. TONIGHTS STORYLINES This is the first of three matchups this season between the Flames and Jets. These two teams last played a total of nine times during the 2021 season as division rivals apart of the Scotia North Division. This is a Pacific Division versus Central Division battle; The Flames are 1-0-2 against the Central Division this season and 1-2-3 against Western Conference opponents. QUARTER MARK: The Flames have started the season strong with a 12-3-5 record after 20 games. CALGARY TIES ON THE WINNIPEG JETS: Jets Assistant Coach, Dave Lowry played 193 games in Calgary during four seasons, from 2000-01 to 2003-04 scoring 31 goals and picking up 69 points. Lowry then became an assistant coach for the Flames from 2009-10 to 2011-12. Josh Morrissey, a native of Calgary grew up playing his bantam and midget hockey in Calgary for the Calgary Royals before making the move to junior hockey. Calgary Flames: Head Coach and Player Bios Head Coach: Darryl Sutter

Darryl Sutter was named as the Flames 21st Head Coach on March 4, 2021. Sutter coached Los Angeles from 20112017 winning the Stanley Cup in 2012 &2014. He has been a head coach in the NHL for 19 seasons with Chicago, San Jose, Calgary and Los Angeles accumulating a record of 634-467-101-83 record before rejoining the Flames in 2021. This is Sutter’s second stint with the Flames after originally being named as the team’s head coach on December 28, 2002 and coaching through July 12, 2006. He was also the team’s General Manager from April 11, 2003 through December 28, 2010. Winnipeg Jets: Head Coach and Player Bios Head Coach: Paul Maurice Paul Maurice, 54, is in his eighth season as head coach of the Winnipeg Jets after being appointed to the position on January 12, 2014. Under Maurice, the Jets have gone 311-220-61, for a .576 points percentage. He has the most wins by a head coach in franchise history. Maurice became the second-youngest NHL coach to earn 500 wins after a 8-2 victory over Florida on January 13, 2015.
