2018 Winnipeg Jets Western Conference Final Preview

Page 1

SERIES NOTES HISTORY IN THE MAKING

GETTING OUT FRONT

For the first time in history the Winnipeg Jets have reached the Western Conference Final of the Stanley Cup Playoffs…Having beaten the Minnesota Wild (4-1) in the first round, and having taken down the Presidents’ Trophy winning Nashville Predators (4-3) in the second round, the Jets face the Vegas Golden Knights in a best-of-seven series to determine which Western Conference team advances to the Stanley Cup Final…Vegas advanced to theWestern Conference Final after sweeping the Los Angeles Kings (4-0) in round one and then beating the San Jose Sharks (4-2) in the second round…Despite finishing second overall in the NHL during the regular season, the Jets are the only non-division winner competing the conference finals…Winnipeg and Vegas each won its first two playoff series in franchise history, marking the first time since 2003, and third time overall, that both Western Conference Final participants are playing in their first conference final.

The Jets improved to 7-1 in the playoffs when scoring first in Game 7 against Nashville…The Jets have scored the opening goal in seven of their eight playoff wins…Winnipeg’s lone win in the playoffs when not scoring the first goal was in Game 3 against Nashville when the Jets erased a 3-0 first period deficit.

SEASON SERIES

FEARLESS LEADER Jets head coach Paul Maurice is coaching in the postseason for the sixth time in his career…He is now 3-0 in Game 7s after Thursday’s win in Nashville…Maurice is 33-36 behind the bench in playoff games, with the highlight of his postseason success coming in 2002 when he coached the Carolina Hurricanes to the Stanley Cup Final… The Game 1 win against Minnesota in the first round was his first playoff victory since 2009 when he coached Carolina.

GOALS ATTAINED

The Jets went an even 1-1-1 against Vegas during the regular season, including 1-0-1 at Bell MTS Place…Kyle Connor (3G, 1A) and Patrik Laine (2G, 2A) led the Jets with four points each in the three regular season matchups against the Golden Knights…Both of Laine’s goals came on the powerplay… The Dec. 1 home game against the Knights marked Connor’s first multi-goal game in the NHL…Connor recorded a 50% shooting percentage over the three games, as his three goals came on just six attempts.

Mark Scheifele scored twice in Game 7 against Nashville to set an NHL record for most road goals in a playoff series with seven…He had a pair of goals in each of Game 1, 2 and 7 in Nashville…He leads the NHL in playoff goals with 11 in 12 games…Scheifele has a goal in seven of Winnipeg’s 12 playoff games…He had a four-game goal scoring streak from Game 4 at Minnesota to Game 2 at Nashville (Apr. 17-29).

PAYING DIVIDENDS

SEVENTH HEAVEN

Paul Stastny scored twice in Game 7, including the eventual game-winning goal in the first period…He also had an assist for a career total of eight points (4G, 4A) in four Game 7s…He had a point in six of the seven games against Nashville (5G, 5A)…Since being acquired from the St. Louis Blues at the trade deadline, Stastny has 27 points (10G, 17A) in 31 regular season and playoff games.

The Jets 7-4 win versus the Golden Knights on Dec. 1 marked one of five occasions from the regular season the Jets scored seven goals in a game…Three of the seven goals came on the power play...The five games with seven goals tied the Jets with the Toronto Maple Leafs for the most seven-goal games this season…The Jets have recorded one seven-goal game in the playoffs, which came on May 1 versus the Nashville Predators when they won 7-4 with Dustin Byfuglien and Blake Wheeler each scoring twice.

HELLE HOT BETWEEN THE PIPES

BOUNCING BACK Like they did throughout the last month of the regular season, the Jets bounced back from a loss (Game 6 vs. Nashville) with a win (Game 7)…Going back to the regular season, the Jets haven’t lost consecutive games since Mar. 12-13 and haven’t lost back-to-back games in regulation since Feb. 9-11…In the regular season, the Jets lost back-to-back games in regulation only five games and never lost three games in a row in regulation.

THAT’S OFFENSIVE The Jets are tied with the Washington Capitals for the most goals per game in the playoffs at 3.58…Each team has scored 43 goals in 12 games…The Jets lead the NHL in the playoffs with 18 third-period goals in the playoffs…Winnipeg also has an NHL-best plus-10 goal differential in the third period during the playoffs.

Goaltender Connor Hellebuyck improved to 8-4 in the playoffs with the Game 7 win… He’s allowed one goal or less in five of the eight wins, including a pair of shutouts against Minnesota in the first round…He’s been a major factor in Winnipeg’s success at home in the playoffs, posting a 1.76 goals-against average and .928 in the four wins at Bell MTS Place...He’s been even better on the road with a 2.47 goals-against average and .931 save percentage.

WHEELIN’ WINGMAN Blake Wheeler had two assists in Game 7 against Nashville to finish the series with nine assists in seven games…He has five assists in his last three games…Wheeler has shot up to third in the NHL in the playoffs with 12 assists in 12 games…He joins Vegas’ Reilly Smith as the only two players playing the conference finals that are averaging an assist per game in the playoffs…Wheeler was tied for the NHL lead in assists during the regular season with 68 assists.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE Winnipeg’s Game 7 victory by four goals was their sixth win in the playoffs by three goals or more, which leads the NHL…All four wins against Nashville were by three goals or more…The Jets are the fourth team in NHL history to post three road wins in a series by three goals or more…Winnipeg also led the NHL during the regular season with 23 wins by three goals or more…The NHL record for most wins by three goals or more in a single playoff season is 13, held by the 1981 and 1983 New York Islanders.
