Up inthe River your own Canoe Manitoba, indeed all of Canada, owes its very existence to the intrepid explorers who traveled the length and breadth of this country by canoe, following the labyrinth of waterways to points unknown in the service of kingdoms and companies.
By contrast, today’s paddling enthusiasts engage in more recreational pursuits that provide a rich and varied opportunity for fitness, canoe community camaraderie and the ability to tap into natural scenery not accessible by other routes.
Collaborator for Paddle Manitoba and a lifelong paddler, buying his first canoe at the age of 12. “Each person gets different benefits from paddling,” says Tim. “For some, it is a physical challenge; for others, it is highly relaxing. Some enjoy the thrill of moving water, while others see the canoe/kayak as a vehicle for fishing.”
Fort Whyte Alive is the primary venue for flatwater classes offered by Paddle Manitoba. “The courses offered at Fort Whyte are restricted to those 12 years old and up. There are other Paddle Manitoba is a places that offer paddling non-profit, volunteer-run instruction, such as through organization that has been our corporate members found promoting the many pleasures on our web-site at www.paddle. and benefits of the activity mb.ca. maneuver effectively and efficiently. “As well as basic strokes, trimming the canoe, positioning oneself in the canoe, and entering and exiting the canoe are covered. In all Paddle Manitoba courses, safety is a priority, so techniques and equipment for safe paddling are covered. I recommend anyone who hasn't taken a course to give it a try, if only to improve the efficiency of their strokes,” says Tim.
Paddle Manitoba classes are offered through May to September, with the bulk of the courses scheduled in June and July. The cost at Fort Whyte Alive for the 4 – hour introductory course is $55 for members and $85.00 plus GST for non-members. The 8-hour, more advanced course is $95 for members and nonmembers pay $125.00 plus GST. Paddle Manitoba's retail members have partnered with Fort Whyte Alive to also offer

open paddles on Tuesday and Thursday evenings adds Tim. “These cost only $5, and allow folks to try a variety of different boats, get some general tips and advice, and learn more about canoeing or kayaking. Paddle Manitoba also offers Wednesday evening paddles at LaBarriere Park. These are canoe only, cost $5, and pre-registration is required.” This year’s flooding conditions are a factor in on-the- water safety. Muscle Mist is the No pain… no gain. Necessity is the mother of invention. These two sayings may be heard all the time, but put them together and they sum up the creation and growth of Muscle Mist, an outstanding ‘Made in Manitoba’ product and true personal and business success story. Muscle Mist is a topical spray that provides “temporary relief of muscle aches and joint pain associated with strains and bruises,” by reducing inflammation and promoting blood flow. Categorized as a natural health product and approved as such by Health Canada, the active medicinal ingredients are menthol and clove oil. Non-medicinal ingredients include Isopropyl alcohol, purified water, Eucalyptus Oil, Camphor, Peppermint Oil, and Jojoba Oil. A 4 oz spray bottle will sell for $20.99 with larger sizes and refill bottles also available.

Although safe enough to be used even by expectant mothers, it is not recommended for children under the age of two. The label has additional warnings about applying heat and so on. The product is meant to be sprayed onto the painful area but not rubbed in. It dries quickly and leaves no residue to stain clothing. The smell is closer to spicy than medicinal and dissipates in a few minutes. How long the effects last will depend on the individual. “When it goes on cold it is going to work on inflammation. When it goes on warm, it’s increasing blood flow to the area”, says inventor Carol Manlow. “I’ve had people use it for everything from headaches to arthritis, shingles, sinus troubles, whiplash and sports injuries. Customers keep calling in to tell us about new uses all the time. It also seems to work differently for different people.” For Manlow, it helped her live with the pain of fibromyalgia . Flash back to more than fifteen years ago and she was at a low point in her life. She’d been bedridden for almost three years but refused to take the pain lying down. “I originally started making herbal baths but of course you can’t take your bathtub with you everywhere so I had to come up with something more portable.”

Calling on her own knowledge in herbs and natural medicine she worked with a chemist and a chiropractor who tested it with the help of his patients. “We switched things around a few times until we had the right formulation and have had nothing but great success with it.” In 1996 Manlow hadn’t set out to create a commercial product, or at least not something that would grow to the scale of operations today. “When I started going to craft sales with it, I found that there was a great demand for people doing repetitive work as they made their

original crafts.” From there, she started on wholesale shows in 1998 and the rest is history. “I started out in my house, then moved to a 3,000 sq ft warehouse, and then to a 6,000 sq ft warehouse in Selkirk. The space is a dual facility that is a storefront for Gramma Carols’ Gourmet Bulk and Health as well as wholesale location as Country Connections Inc. We get calls daily from customers asking about there is is available so we try to direct them first to retail store closest to them,” says Manlow. Muscle Mist is distributed world-wide in nearly 1,000 stores and by mail order through www.musclemist.ca and earned Manlow a “Woman Entrepreneur of the Year Award for International Trade” in 2009. That kind of success is bound to attract attention by others eager to duplicate not only her business model but the formulation itself. “They say it’s the sincerest form of flattery but I don’t see it that way,” says Manlow. She cautions the public about imitators. Muscle Mist is manufactured in a laboratory in Winnipeg to ensure safety and consistency. She suggests checking the label carefully because even that has been copied. “I actually found out one guy was mixing up his own version in his garage because I received complaints about it causing burns. He was promoting it as being ‘even stronger’ than Muscle Mist. It sure was.” ■

Up the River (continued from page 1) contained within their banks says Tim. “Landing and launching are much more difficult, and the hazards in the river are less obvious. Currently, the City of Winnipeg has prohibited river travel within the city as a precautionary measure. Cold water is also a potentially underestimated risk factor. Experienced paddlers should know these risks, and I would urge inexperienced paddlers to give the Red and Assiniboine time to calm down. Obviously, being aware of the risks, making sound judgements, and wearing a properly fitted PFD are the biggest things we can do to enhance our safety.” ■
