it a try in 2009. Now, half way through its second year, preliminary data from 20092010 points to encouraging progress in the struggle to get a handle on rising rates of obesity among children. The idea of pairing older and younger students is nothing new but instead of learning reading or math skills Healthy Buddies takes aim at empty calories and inactivity. Healthy Buddies empowers elementary school children to live healthier lives by providing them with knowledge about, as well as encouraging positive attitudes toward, the three components of health: physical activity, nutrition, mental health. As the name implies, a major component of the program involves partnering older students in grades five and six for example, with first and second graders. The pilot program launched in 2006 in 40 BC elementary schools produced such positive results that Manitoba decided to give

“From the province’s perspective and the partners involved there appeared to be a good fit with our Healthy Living goals, “says Dr. Rob Santos, Scientific Director and Senior Policy Advisor for Healthy Child Manitoba. “What is typical is that we had more interest than resources so the fairest way to determine who would participate in 2009 was a random lottery. The schools not chosen were still used as part of the control group and put on the list to receive the Healthy Buddies program in the subsequent school year.”

says Santos. “A lot of effort internationally has gone into trying to curtail the growing epidemic of obesity among youth especially in developed countries but few interventions have show much effect. The Canadian Medical Association journals published a meta-analysis of all available studies and only 2 of the many studies they looked at showed any affect. Healthy Buddies appears to reduce the Body Mass Index (BMI) in students over time if you take the development of the children into account, as well as waist circumference which is a harder measure to change.” The exact figures have yet to be published but Dr. Santos says they were quite significant in terms of both statistical and practical significance.

Promising Results In all about 650 students in 20 Manitoba schools participated in the program and control groups. “We’ve had a few months now to begin looking at the results and it looks very promising,”

“This was not your typical program run by a research group in hothouse conditions, “ adds Dr. Santos. “The program was delivered on a routine basis so to demonstrate these kinds of effects, especially on waist circumference is notable. We were surprised to find no apparent affect on the physical activity level which is one of the components of the program. That implies that the mechanism by which the program operates is not actually energy output but energy intake, or in other words what they are putting into their mouths. Because of the age group it is primarily the parents and families that decide what the children eat on a day to day basis.” Steering Away from Unhealthy Food Choices It appears that children are steering away from unhealthy food choices and likely passing on the message to parents. “This is something we didn’t measure but I think that if we were to replicate (continued p 3)

If you were to sit down to eat a whole raw head of kale, topped off with a banana and a couple of oranges you would take in the same amount of nutrition found in one bottle of “drinkme™ Green”. As the creator and founder of the product, Christina Laham Paganelli, says, “The emphasis is on raw and whole food, seeds, stems, pulp and all.” The product is The emphasis is on a smoothie so the texture is thicker and raw and whole food, slightly gritty compared to a juice.”

seeds, stems, pulp The label boasts that each 450ml bottle contains the Canada Food Guide equivalent and all. of 4 portions of veggies and fruit. Make that 5 ? for the “drinkme™ Green 3” version. But why kale of all things? “It is a very rich source of antioxidants and a superior food as far as being a dark green leafy vegetable. The orange juice was a matter of trying out various combinations for the best taste,” she says. Aside from using only organic produce, there is nothing taken out, cooked or modified in any way to affect the nutrition which is what makes it so different from other products. It is also un-pasteurized and so frozen within an hour to ensure food safety and to keep enzymes from being destroyed by heat. Paganelli explains, “Enzymes occur naturally in whole foods and are a vital part of the digestion process. When they are destroyed by cooking, your body will use other sources to aid in the process, taking them from non-vital organs like your skin or from your hair and nails. In addition to being packed with nutrients, Paganelli says the other most important benefit of using the whole food is the delivery of fiber needed to rid the body of toxins, and that is something with which she is all too familiar. Like so many products, drinkme™ was invented as a matter of personal necessity. In Paganelli’s case, serious illness threatened the then 26-year old just as she and her husband had began a family. First a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis (MS), then thyroid cancer threatened her life as well as the baby she was carrying. As her options for treatments

ravaged her small frame, she decided to fight back by finding a way of giving her body every ounce of nourishment possible. “We threw out everything in our cupboards and replaced it all with organic raw fruits, vegetables, nuts seeds, oils and top-quality enzymes, pro-biotics and other raw supplements. “ she states on her website as part of “Christina’s Story”. It is a remarkable account of her journey back to health and you might assume that to this day the whole family (which now includes a second very healthy child ) would be die-hard raw-food fanatics, but balance is the key to her continued physical and mental health. “Our meals always include a huge salad and our grocery cart is easily 70% to 80% fruits and vegetables, but we also have a small sampling of meat and a variety of other foods. My children have a smoothie in their lunches, but they will also have the occasional pudding, granola bar or even Smarties.” Without the drive and conviction to pass on her story, experiences and by extension promoting drinkme™ she says she could never do what it takes to put in the 18-hour days, the money and so much of herself. Although Paganelli lives in Stonewall and officially launched the company in Manitoba in 2008, they have since outgrown their production facilities twice and now manufacture the smoothies in Alberta. Plans for the future centre on expanding distribution and the much anticipated introduction of “drinkme™ Ruby” which will add a new colour and flavour twist with beets and raspberries later this year. The “drinkme™” website has a complete list of where the smoothies are available so far. ■

this in the future we’d like to see what is going on in those families. “ says Santos. Published results of the evaluation hope to be available in the Spring of 2011, but continuation of the program is not guaranteed. “Aside from the positive effects, what will have to be evaluated further is the practicality of the application on an ongoing basis. Is it feasible to do on a larger scale or is it too complicated or expensive? “The initial 2-year program received funding in the amount of about $260,000. ■
