William Warder was born in the mountains of New Mexico, and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from the University of New Mexico and a Graduate degree from UCLA. Warder’s abstraction of the Aspen mountains, in Aspen, Colorado, and expressive brushwork emulates the works of John Marin, who was known to have also been captivated by the New Mexico landscape. Warder’s works have been exhibited at the American Watercolor Society, Museum of New Mexico, and New York World’s Fair.

116. MARY K. SLOAN (Am. 1924-2014)
Mary Sloan’s vibrant and expressive style can be seen throughout a variety of mediums including but not limited to oil, mosaic, and watercolor. Having lived in both San Miguel de Allende, Mexico and Santa Fe, New Mexico before moving back to Texas, she was inspired and deeply in uenced by nature. In both Desert Landscape and River Rocks Sloan’s desire to nd balance between the beauty and brutality of nature is a profound in uence in her work. As she stated, “there is much of nature’s constant struggle or combat yet beyond, behind, or near a struggle there is usually a stabilizing thing of beauty of strange conformity” (Sloan, Discovery).

e Davis Wild ower Competition provided an unprecedented artistic and nancial opportunity for artists to paint the natural beauty of Texas. By the time the second annual Competitive Exhibi tion of Art was scheduled for 1928, the large cash prizes awarded by Edgar B. Davis and the San Antonio Art League were not only an incentive for Texas artists, but also for prominent artists throughout the country. Joseph Birren, having recently relocated to Santa Fe, New Mexico, trav eled to Palo Duro Canyon to paint a Texas scene for the contest.
Birren, a landscape painter, illustrator and graphic artist, was known for a style he called Tactilism, meaning he used an individual style of patterned paint application in a way that gave the illusion of three-dimensional work. Born in Chicago in 1864, he attended the Art Institute of Chicago where he was a student of John Vanderpoel from 1883 to 1900. He also studied in Philadelphia, New York at the Art Students League, Munich, and Paris at the Julian Academy (1889). In the 1920s and 1930s, he maintained studios in both Chicago and Laguna Beach, California, and in 1927 had moved to Santa Fe where he had a posi tive reception to his impressionist landscapes.
For his entry, which he titled Floral Glory of the Palo Duro Canyon for the competition, he chose to paint the Prairie Dog Town Fork of the Red River as it meanders through the canyon. He notes on the back of the artist’s board the Indian Blanket wild owers he highlights along the banks of the river. More than 600 paintings were entered for the contest and out of those, 100 were chosen for the exhibition. Birren was awarded an Honorable Mention prize for this entry. A er the competition, the painting spent the next several months touring cities in Texas as part of a traveling exhibition of prizewinning paintings from the contest.

Untitled Triptych - In the Shade of a Tree oil on MDF board each panel: 65 1/2 x 17 1/4 signed middle right: Marie Haines $20,000 - $30,000
Painter and muralist Marie Bruner Haines (Mrs. Frederick A. Burt) was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. Early in her training she studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy of Cincinnati (1900-1901) and the Pennsylvania School of Industrial Arts, Philadelphia (1904-1905) and later continued her studies at prestigious art schools such as the Art Institute of Chicago and the National Academy of Design, NY. From 1908-1922 she lived in Atlanta, GA and moved to San Augustine, FL in 1923. Later that year, a er her mother passed away, she moved to College Station to live with her sister. She became known for her murals and lunettes or half-moon shaped lacquered and painted panel works. She remained in College Station until 1950, when she married and moved to Bennington, VT.
Haines’ work can be found in the following collections: Museum of New Mexico, Santa Fe; Bennington County Courthouse, Vermont; Texas A&M University, College Station; Iowa State University, Ames; and Cincinnati Art Museum to name a few.
In the early 1940s, Haines was commissioned to create this sensitively rendered triptych that celebrated the career of Mr. Joseph Sayers “Cotton Joe” Mogford (1893-1989), a renowned cotton geneticist and professor of agronomy at Texas A&M University. Mogford originated the Cotton Pageant, an annual beauty pageant as part of the Maid of Cotton promotion of the National Cotton Council held from the late 1930s to the early 1970s. e funds raised by Mogford through the pageants were used to take Aggie students abroad to observe and study cotton agriculture in countries such as Uzbekistan and Peru. e scene depicted in this remarkable and historic piece is reminiscent of cotton farming as it was before harvest mechaniza tion in the Brazos River valley of central Texas where Mogford spent his career. Works by Haines and biographical information about Mogford are held in the archives of Cushing Library of Texas A&M University.

is rare painting captures a landscape and way of life for the people of San Antonio that would soon change as its population grew.
Renowned San Antonio born artist Julian Onderdonk, moved to New York in 1901 where he studied with William Merritt Chase, the Art Students League of New York, Robert Henri, and other in uential artists. During his early days in New York he struggled, entering a business relationship with a ruthless art dealer that sold his works but kept most of the pro t. For a few years, he divided his time between Texas and New York, sometimes working under various pseudonyms, but in 1909 he moved back to San Antonio for good. It was there in the Hill Country of Texas that his genius ourished.
LITERATURE: Illustrated as Catalogue No. 581 on page 178: Noon on the Blanco Road, South West Texas, 1911 in Julian Onderdonk A Catalogue Raisonné, by: Harry Hal © 2016 by the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
As Onderdonk continued to paint in Texas, his sweeping landscapes became the prominent focus of his work. Compositions depicting the human form became rare, but this important painting was an exception. In Noon on the Blanco Road – Southwest, Texas Onderdonk depicts a couple with their covered wagon pulled to the side of the road and a re to prepare a meal. eir horses rest in the shade of a majestic live oak tree. e man wears a sombrero and the woman a red shawl. e noonday sun is shining brightly on the caliche road as it winds through the composition. Prickly pear cacti emerge from the stone outcropping as the clear blue sky with clouds fades into a gentle haze.

Bandera Creek is located in Bandera County, TX. It rises in Bandera Pass and runs south thirteen miles until it ows into the clear spring fed waters of the Medina River. is painting presents a unique composition and sub ject matter for Onderdonk. In this work he captured the clear jewel-toned water re ections of a pool beneath a green leafy canopy. is work is quieter and more re ective than some of his large open landscapes and gives a more intimate view of the terrain.

oil on canvas mounted on masonite 25 x 43 3/4 signed lower le : Olin Travis $35,000 - $45,000
In this work, Travis created a visual crescendo of multi-layered iconography. Neath the light of a full moon, a string quartet plays together on a lake covered in thin ice. Violinist I plays at a near frenetic pace and glides seamlessly across the ice. Unable to keep pace, violinist II has fallen head rst into the ice. Perched in the bow of a gnarled tree, the violist creates moody and melodic notes. A turkey vulture roosts near him visually echoing his form. At the base of the tree, the cellist is seated and has lost himself in the music. is rare painting exhibits Travis’s stylized gures and links this oeuvre of his work to American and Texas Regionalism movements.
An important artist and teacher Travis’s in uence was signi cant in the Dallas Nine group of artists and beyond. During his lifetime, Travis’s paintings were featured in numerous shows throughout Texas, New York, and Colorado and 20+ solo exhibitions were mounted. Today, his work can be found in the following collections: Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum, Canyon, TX; Dallas Museum of Art, TX; Elisabet Ney Museum and Texas Fine Arts Association, Austin, TX; Art Museum of South Texas, Corpus Christi, TX; and Marion Koogler McNay Art Museum, San Antonio, TX to name a few.

Many times Darge knew his subjects personally and brought attention to, with forceful authenticity and detail, the daily life of the ranchman and herdsman of the West.
German-born artist Friedrich Ernst “Fred” Darge arrived in Port Arthur, Texas in 1923. He soon moved to Chicago where he attended the Art Institute of Chicago, got married and worked for the Public Works of Art Project (PWAP). By 1933, he was separated from his wife and family and started to travel, working his way through California, Arizona, New Mexico, arriving nally in San Antonio. During this time, he worked as a cowhand and experienced rsthand the daily life of sheep and goat herders on the ranches of Texas. His eyes were opened to the beauty of the Big Bend country, and he found his lifelong passion: to chronicle in paint the life of the ranchman before the end of that era. Late in 1935 Darge moved to Dallas, where he would winter, but during the summers he went on painting trips out West, to the Big Bend and Taos where his love for painting cowboys grew.

Homer Boss became a well known New Mexico artist who early on studied with William Merritt Chase (1902) and Robert Henri (1909) at the New York (Chase) School of Art. In his early work, Boss was known for commanding full-length portraits set against dark backgrounds. Eventually, he became known as one of “ e Fi een”, a group of Henri’s students which included George Bellows and Edward Hopper who rebelled against the structure of the National Academy. A er a disagreement with Henri, Boss took over the school and later renamed it the Independent School, becoming an in uential teacher.

Ben Culwell was a signi cant Abstract Expressionist whose artwork was created in Texas, and who rst achieved fame through an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. In 1946, Culwell was chosen to exhibit 19 paintings, in a seminal exhibi tion, Fourteen Americans at the Museum of Modern Art, with artists of the rst generation of Abstract Expressionists. is exhibit was one of the rst exhibitions to present Abstract Expressionism to the public. Due to Culwell’s link to New York art museums, he was one of the primary Texas artists who played an instrumental role in the birth of Abstract Expressionism in Texas.
For many of the Texas abstractionists, art sales were slim and Culwell as well was forced to work another job to nancially support himself. It was not until the late 1950s and early 1960s when renewed appre ciation for his artwork brought art sales.
Culwell began his early art training at the Dallas Art Institute in 1934, moved to New York in 1936, studied at Columbia Univer sity, and lived in New York until 1937. From 1941 to 1944, Cullwell experimented with artist materials and techniques during the war. In 1944 while on leave, Culwell showed the work to Jerry Bywaters who decided the work worthy of a one-man exhibition at the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts. In 1945, Curator, Dorothy Miller came to Dallas from New York, admired Culwell’s work and included 19 works in the Fourteen Americans exhibition.
Greening of a Moment is an iconic work, dated 1956-1958, and a unique opportunity, to acquire a work by artist who in the opin ion of many art historians is still under recognized, and ripe for further art historical recognition. Greening of a Moment has been on continuous loan to a museum since 2014 until placed at auction.

In 1977 the McNay Art Museum held a major retrospective on the artist, and in 1987 was featured in a solo exhibition at the Menil Art Museum. Culwell’s paintings are in the permanent collection of many art museums, including the Museum of Modern Art, NY; Dallas Museum of Art, McNay Art Museum; Fine Arts Museum, Houston, and e Menil Museum, among others
Everyday is a second opportunity to acquire a highly important artwork by the artist, and exempli es Culwell’s more lyrical abstract oeuvre. e surface of the painting has been built up with layers of lacquer and thick paint application, and buried in the paint layers are pieces of glass. Culwell creativly experiments and plays with texture, found objects, glass, and other materials, both traditional and non traditional. Everyday has been on continous loan to a museum since 2014 until placed at this auction.

FOR DECADES, PAUL ROGERS HARRIS was influential in the Dallas art scene as a curator, educator, and artist. Having gradu ated from the University of North Texas with a major in art and a minor in education, Harris was a strong advocate for art education, starting his career as a teacher in Fort Worth, Texas before moving to Dallas where he continued teaching and also became the art director of the Dallas Independent School District’s television program KERA-TV.
Additionally, he established the Children’s House at the Dallas Museum of Contemporary Arts before moving to New York, NY, both enrolling at New York University and working at The Museum of Modern Art until 1970 when he moved back to Dallas, becoming head of the Department of Art Education at Southern Methodist University. After four years at the university, Harris was director of the Art Center in Waco, TX before becoming an independent curator, establishing Paul Rogers Harris Exhibitions in 1988. Harris oversaw exhibitions in the Dallas area for decades, bringing attention to many artists and their works.

Daniel Kendrick is a proli c artist with strong ties to the mystique of Texas. Being a devout patriot, Kendrick’s love and vast knowledge of the Texas landscape, including Palo Duro Canyon State Park, can be felt through his paintings as well as his continuous devotion to the Texas Bluebonnet. His landscapes are detailed as “every brushstroke and color scheme are deliberately applied in such a way to achieve an e ect” highlighted in the expertly precise foliage and striking Texas horizon.

As a young adult, M. Walker Nelson yearned to be a scienti c illustrator with a focus on botanicals. Inspired by classic novels from Hemingway and Conan Doyle, Walker Nelson began hiking and collecting leaves to identify. When she got her rst job working for a collegiate geology professor - illustrating bone fragments for a scienti c journal - she quickly realized she was in the wrong business. She was not the one in the eld exploring, but in a tiny room with uorescent lighting - a human copy machine. “I was not out in nature and I was not allowed to take creative liberties” she remembers. “Although I transitioned to a ne artist, I have kept a love for nature.” is painting was inspired by a 2021 trip along I-10 from Texas to Tallahassee Florida. e mag nolia trees are a gem of the forest. eir deep green glossy leaves with lime edging hides a brilliant velvet gold on the underside. She has intentionally le the quick construction lines to show the breeze gently moving in the branches as its likeness was captured.

Sonia King’s pegasus “Flying Colors,” sponsored by Harris F. Underwood III, Inc., showcases her use of mosaics, believing that “while a piece may work in color and shape, it must also correctly handle light, create contrast in texture, [and] move the eye in a certain way.” King’s pegasus uses 19,300 mosaic beads and mirrors to create a gradient e ect across the varying colors, which with its size of nearly 6 feet and weighing over 100 pounds is truly a statement. King has been featured in numerous exhibitions and was commissioned in 2015 for a mosaic installation for HALL Arts in the Dallas Arts district.

“Flying Colors” is one of a little over one hundred pegasuses that were installed in Dallas as part of the public art exhibition Dallas Soars! to promote tourism as well as link the business and art communities of the city together. e symbol of the pegasus was chosen as they have a unique history with the city since 1934 when the neon lit pegasus was placed on top of the Magnolia Oil Co. building. e pegasuses were displayed across Dallas in the summer of 2001 and a few can still be found in the city today.
