Andreas Kocks The First Round

January 7 – February 25, 2015 Opening Reception with artist: Wednesday, January 7, 6 – 8 pm Winston Wächter Fine Art is pleased to present our second solo exhibition with sculptor Andreas Kocks. Please join us for the opening reception with the artist on Wednesday, January 7, from 6-8 pm. It is no surprise that German artist Andreas Kocks formally studied both architecture and sculpture. His large scale installation works merge those worlds with sweeping paper brushstrokes, transforming the space in which they reside. Using only cut paper, Kocks uses the world around him as his canvas and thick watercolor paper as his medium. “Paint” leaps from wall to wall, in swirling dances and energetic bursts. Kocks is able to manipulate the paper to simultaneously appear substantial and delicate. Each artwork changes before the viewer, as you move about the room with bouncing light transforming your perspective. Kocks demands participation and provides something uniquely interactive with the most familiar of materials. Through the use of gold, silver and aluminum leaf, Kocks’ most recent exhibition, The First Round, takes his play with light to a new level. Carefully sculpted sheets of cut paper shimmer and hover over one another like overflowing precious metals. By adding these elements to his already dynamic work, Kocks elevates the role of light and the viewer in the experience. Layers protrude and receded as you move past, and liquid seems to follow you out of the frame and into space. Kocks again, literally pushes boundaries and reinvents his already unique medium. Andreas Kocks was born in Oberhausen, Germany and received his MFA in Sculpture from the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf and his MA in education at the University of Düsseldorf. In 2006 he was awarded a Pollock -Krasner Foundation fellowship. In addition to exhibiting at museums and galleries in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, England, and the United States, he has received numerous commissions from private and public clients.
