Maja Petric Skies Winston Wächter Fine Art
Maja Petric, Skies back room exhibition February 10 – March 24, 2018
Opening Reception Saturday, February 10, 12-2pm
Maja Petric creates transformative spatial experiences using data gathering technology and light installation. “As an artist, my goal is to elicit transformative sensory, cognitive and visceral experiences. To do so, I use cutting-edge technology as a vehicle for nature-inspired design. My approach is based on the study of humans’ innate tendency to seek connections with nature and natural elements such as landscapes, light, and changes in light. I have long been fascinated with people turning their eyes towards the sky for meaning and guidance. Our skyward gaze has shaped art, science, religion, agriculture, industry, and worldviews across this globe since prehistoric times. The sky is present in most of our myths; its mystery is endlessly mesmerizing. There is only one sky, but the ways we see and interpret it are infinite.” Maja's artwork has been exhibited at Microsoft Research Gallery, Henry Art Gallery, Hong Kong Landmark, Gallery 4Culture, Matadero Madrid, Medialab Prado, Winter Lights in London, in addition to others. Her artwork has been nominated forArts Innovator Award, FastCo. Innovation by Design Awards, International Light Art Award by the Centre for International Light Art Unna. She is currently Artist in Residence of Redmond, WA, USA.

Skies Epitomized of War and Peace juxtaposes what one sees gazing at the sky in peaceful parts of the world, such as Iceland and New Zealand, with the sky as it is seen in areas of conflict and unrest in Syria and Iraq. To build an epitome of a Syrian sky, for instance, an algorithm was used to search for "syria+sky+skies." The software looked at all of these images and suck in bits and pieces of them, using them as brushes to paint the "sky epitomized.
Title: Skies Epitomized of War and Peace. Epitome Of The Icelandic Sky. Epitome Of The Iraqi Sky. Epitome Of The Universal Sky. Epitome Of The Syrian Sky. Epitome Of The New Zealand Sky. Year: 2017 Medium: Dynamic light box with artificial intelligence generated image on backlit print Size: 54 x 48 x 7 inches
Using artificial intelligence (AI) as an artistic tool, Maja Petric combines numerous points of view into individual archetypal images – AIEye. Algorithms, developed in collaboration with AI computer scientists Mihai Jalobeanu and Nebojsa Jojic, search the Internet for thousand of images of the sky and identify different views based on time, location, etc. These complex mathematical systems review all of the found images, analyze their salient properties, and summarize the data. The resulting artwork captures the sky as seen through varying human perspectives.
In Lost Skies, large-scale lightboxes depict views of the sky based on the perspective of a climate change skeptic. AIEye combines numerous points of view into individual archetypal images. The algorithm searches the Internet for images of the world affected by climate change-related and generates an essence of those sites as if it was seen through the eyes of climate change deniers.
