JULIE SPEIDEL Winston Wächter Fine Art

JULIE SPEIDEL Julie Speidel’s artistic voice is built on a fundamental and universal visual vocabulary. Her sculpture creates a distinctly contemporary bridge between natural organic form and human intervention. She sees her work as part of a continuing legacy of sculptural form: from the megaliths of the British Isles, the burial figures of China, the carved petroglyphs of India or the totemic arts of cultures on many continents. It is the commonalities of all cultures that she uses as the touchstone of her work Speidel was born in Seattle in 1941 and was raised in the Pacific Northwest and Europe. A formative period as an adolescent in England and Scotland, along with summers in the forests and shores of the Northwest, provided her with a sense of the power and grandeur of ancient and sacred sites—both natural and man made. She credits these environments as encouraging her inclination to the three-dimensional object. An inveterate collector of found objects and an avid traveler to ancient sites from Mongolia to Majorca, Speidel is drawn to intriguing textures and the inherent power of certain forms. She pursued her training in languages at the University of Grenoble, France and her art in Seattle at the Cornish College of the Arts and the University of Washington. But it was in the 1980s that her work with metal, patina and stone provided her with the tools best suited to her expressive language.
