This needlework coat of arms was most likely worked by one of the daughters of Governor Thomas Fitch of Connecticut and his wife Hannah Hall at the Misses Cuming school in Boston c.1770. It was discovered by Captain Nicholas Johnson, of Newburyport, in the captain's cabin of a deserted ship off the coast of New England c. 1773 and descended to his great-grand daughter Margaret W. Cushing. Silk, metallic thread, and beads on black silk; 19½ x 19 ½ inches square sight.

As of June 2012, 325 students were placed in jobs paying $8.00 an hour or higher, 226 students earned a GED, and nearly 200 entered college.

Both programs track students beyond graduation and provide retention services and opportunities for ongoing support.

The Youth and Adult Education Services (YAES) program serves young people between 16 to 24 years of age who are neither in school nor working. The program reconnects more than 250 young adults with their educational goals each year, preparing them to enter college and/or the workforce to pursue a career.

East Side House Settlement provides the support necessary to complete high school, go on to college, and secure a good job. Education and

Disconnected youth often enter the program reading below the 9th grade level. Rigorous pre-GED and GED classes, along with customized support services, build reading and math levels to equip students to pass the GED exam—the equivalent of completing their high school education. At YAES, skills develop at a rapid rate: students’ reading levels increase by at least one grade for every three months spent in the pre-GED class. While earning their GED certificate, students in the program also prepare for the post-secondary transition to college and/or the workforce.

East Side House’s computer technology program serves more than 1,100 people a month. The program includes a Microsoftcertifying testing center—the ﬁrst and one of the few of its kind in the South Bronx—that provides specialized training and employment readiness.

“Computer skills are essential,” says Ken Greene, Deputy Director of Information Technology at East Side House. “For our students to have a bright future and be in demand in the workforce, they need training. We provide job readiness skills to people who are unemployed and provide training for workers who are looking to be more marketable. Sometimes people get hired and realize they don’t have all of the skills they need, so they enroll. Our door is always open.”

a comprehensive assessment of a student’s abilities and interests, the staff teaches conflict resolution, critical thinking skills, resume building, interviewing strategies, and professional behavior. An East Side House job developer spends time in the field making contacts and placing students in paid internships and jobs that pay $8.00 per hour or higher. Importantly, YAES provides critical retention services, following students for at least one year after placement in college and/or employment to ensure their ongoing achievement. Markel Taylor and Tyone Hutchinson (featured next page), both graduates of YAES, are successfully established in the workforce and are testaments to the program’s effectiveness.

Like YAES, the Community Technology program stays connected to its students and tracks their successes over time. Patrice Crooks, an employed professional who received her Microsoft Office certification at East Side House, attests to the program’s value.

Community Technology East Side House’s Community Technology program empowers community residents to keep pace with the rapidly changing world and enter the economic mainstream. The program incorporates computer technology as a critical learning tool and provides specialized classes and training programs that lead to certification in Microsoft Office, Microsoft Office Specialist, and A+. The Community Technology program also provides paid internships where students can receive basic instruction and exposure to server technology. The program works closely with YAES to facilitate training and job placement.

Tyone’s Story by Tyone Hutchinson

Markel Taylor discovered East Side House’s YAES program while looking for options to continue his education. At age 18, the last grade he had completed in school was 2nd grade.

I learned about East Side House through a friend and enrolled in the Youth and Adult Education Services program. I attended classes three days a week. The classes overall were great. It was good to get refreshed after being out of school for some time.

The program was a challenge at first, but Markel was motivated. He attended classes and learned job readiness skills. He put together a resume, performed mock interviews, learned how to conduct himself in a professional environment, and was placed in paid internships to gain valuable experience. While he enjoyed the world of work, Markel knew he needed to stay focused on earning his GED to be able to go to college. “There were a lot of tears, stress, and worry,” he said. “I failed the test three times. I had a lot of doubt. I remember comparing myself to others and thinking I just wasn’t going to get it. But I had a unique story. I hadn’t been in a classroom since the 2nd grade. By staying after school and staying up late I finally did it. I’m glad I didn’t give up. East Side House taught me to never give up.” Now the Assistant Manager at Target in the Bronx, Markel is responsible for overseeing the Guest Services Department and a team of 20 to 25 cashiers. “I’m proud that I have been able to establish a leadership role,” he reflects. “I’ve learned how to lead a team, make tough decisions, and do what is best for the business. Success takes dedication, punctuality, and the ability to take constructive criticism. These are things East Side House taught me and they have been reinforced on the job. You need to go above and beyond and show you can grow.” Markel plans to enroll in college to pursue a degree in business management while working toward a promotion at Target. “I used to wake up and do nothing,” he reports. “Now I wake up and have real responsibility. I’m painting a picture of what I want for my life. I embraced East Side House and what it had to offer. I can look back and say I’ve done a lot. My hope is that my brothers and sisters will do the same and make my mom proud.”

After being in the program for only three months, I received my GED and enrolled in the Borough of Manhattan Community College. The staff at East Side House helped me apply for college as well as tuition assistance, and East Side House even paid my college application fees. About a year later, one of the GED counselors at YAES mentioned there was a position available in the Technology department and they were recommending me for the job. I got hired in December 2008. I started out as an Administrative Assistant, and I am now a Director at East Side House. As CACFP/Procurement Director, part of my job involves overseeing the operations of our various sites to make sure they are in compliance with state requirements. CACFP is the Child and Adult Care Food Program that feeds healthy and nutritious meals to the children in our Centers. What I love most about my position is that it provides me the opportunity to lead. I believe that setting the right tone and guiding your staff in the right direction is the foundation to successful relationships and a successful business. With any success, there are obstacles you have to face along the way: the one I faced most was learning to listen. At East Side House I’ve learned that it is vital to listen to the advice and feedback of others so that you can be provided with useful information that will help you grow. One of my goals is to own my own business one day. My goal is to become a psychologist and open my own practice. With hard work and dedication, I’ve learned you can go anywhere.

These are statements I would never have dared to utter prior to achieving certification in Microsoft Office Suite at East Side House.

Patrice’s Story by Patrice Crooks A high school diploma, a pink slip, and constant rejection were what I had in 2010. I deeply regretted sacrificing my college education for what, at the time, seemed like a great job and the man of my 19-yearold dreams. The classroom of life was teaching me a lesson.

My current administrative position utilizes these skills daily. Being able to complete tasks efficiently and in a timely fashion is a great feeling as well as an invaluable asset.

I found East Side House through a friend who knew what it was like to be at the bottom. She advised me to call Jacqueline Marrant, an instructor at East Side House, and inquire about computer classes. This was a notion I had never considered and a program I had never heard of. I was approaching 30, unemployed, already out-of-date with technology. I needed a serious upgrade. I picked up the phone.

The need for higher education never ends.As times change and technology evolves, we must evolve also. East Side House offers this opportunity to individuals who do not necessarily fit the required criteria or status of many other programs. They openly accept students who need to gain integral skills to improve not only their knowledge base but their marketability in the workplace.

Ms. Marrant was sincere and encouraging. She urged me to contact the director, Ken Greene, and enroll in the program. In my experience, important people do not take the time to answer the phone themselves, let alone express an earnest interest in enhancing the lives of strangers. I reported to class the next day, amazed by the conversations I had with East Side House staff just 24 hours earlier.

The Microsoft Office class was enlightening and empowering. Ms. Marrant’s training style transcended that of any instructor I have ever met. She was clear, concise, and confident in the subject matter. There was no question that she could not answer, and she had the patience to answer it twice. Learning was happening! Night after night I was exposed to and conquering Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Over the course of the class, Ms. Marrant had become my role model. She took an interest in me as a complete person. I was only a little surprised when she instructed me to enroll in college again and use my daytime hours for something constructive. She was right. I graduated this year with a Bachelor’s Degree in Technology.

ewport, Rhode Island is a magical

place—one of the most historically intact cities in North America, home to landmark buildings created over more than 300 years by some of America’s greatest architects, and filled with remarkable collections of fine and decorative arts from around the world. Its spectacular natural scenery, bordered by Narragansett Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, helped to earn Newport the title “Eden of America” as early as the 18th century, and subsequent generations have created one of America’s most beautiful landscapes, with majestic old trees and plants from all corners of the globe.

The Preservation Society of Newport County, a non-proﬁt, educational organization, was created in 1945 to save the city’s internationally signiﬁcant architectural and cultural heritage. Great architecture, progressive design, unique and picturesque landscapes, social history, and important accomplishments in historic preservation are all represented in the Preservation Society’s 11 historic house museums. More than half a million people—including the Preservation Society’s 28,000 members and thousands of students—take more than 800,000 tours every year and are both enlightened and entertained by Newport’s treasures.

Inside the great houses are the treasures of this historic pageant, such as Townsend and Goddard furniture, China Trade porcelains, Tiffany glass and silver, and European tapestries. Architects, artists, and craftsmen were provided an arena for their own creativity. Visitors to Newport today experience a vibrant and energetic city that also contains important time capsules of American design. It is truly a special place. The buildings, great rooms, and fine and decorative arts that make Newport such a special place are drawn from many periods and cultures from across the globe. The Preservation Society’s historic house museums each tell a specific story, which, taken together, make Newport such a rich and compelling city.

“Newport has more great architecture per square inch than any other place in the country, possibly in the world,” says Dr. Richard Guy Wilson, Commonwealth Professor in Architectural History and Chair of the Department of Architectural History at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville. “Every building under the Preservation Society’s stewardship answers a fundamental, endlessly relevant American question: Who are we? What do we have to say? What do we stand for?”

Hunter House (c. 1748) Hunter House, on Newport Harbor, is one of the great houses of the Georgian period, dating from Newport’s era as a leading commercial seaport and center for the arts and crafts. Originally built for Jonathon Nichols, Jr., it later served as the French naval headquarters during the American Revolution. By 1945, Hunter House faced an uncertain future; that year, The Preservation Society of Newport County was founded in part to save Hunter House. Its rescue was ﬁnanced by opening tours of the vast Vanderbilt house, The Breakers, in 1948. Hunter House itself opened to the public in 1953 and today is a National Historic Landmark.

Pierre-André Lablaude, Chief Architect of the Chateau of Versailles, expresses it this way, “The Preservation Society’s holdings are so signiﬁcant because they reveal the history of a community, the history of a society, and the history of taste. Early architectural heritage in the United States is a rarity; these preserved elements are thus all the more precious. They tell us about the history of the urban environment, of its industrial and commercial activity, of the fortunes that this generated, of the families that amassed these fortunes, of the artists (sometimes European) whom they called in to build these villas and create these properties, of the models that inspired them.”

He concludes, “For the general public—and especially for young people —this is an artistic initiation of the highest quality.” From thriving colonial seaport to summer resort of legend during the Gilded Age, the city has been a gathering spot for merchants, ministers, craftsmen, builders, artists, writers, industrialists, society beauties, and sportsmen. It is a long list of individuals who created the nationally signiﬁcant artistic and cultural legacy of Newport.

Kingscote (1841) Built well up from the waterfront, when fashionable Bellevue Avenue was a dirt road which led to undeveloped land south of the port, Kingscote was one of the earliest summer cottages in Newport. English architect Richard Upjohn designed a Gothic Revival house for Georgia planter George Noble Jones. With the Civil War raging, the house was sold in 1864 to China Trade merchant William Henry King. In 1880, the King family commissioned the architectural firm of McKim, Mead & White to design an addition which included a new dining room with glass by Louis Comfort Tiffany. The dining room was unlike anything previously built in Newport, combining Colonial American details with exotic ornament, reflecting the architects’ interest in fusing eastern and western design motifs. This dining room connects Kingscote with the Isaac Bell House only a few doors down Bellevue Avenue. The house was a bequest to the Preservation Society by Gwendolen Rives upon her death in 1972. It became a National Historic Landmark in 1996.

Green Animals Topiary Garden (1860) Fall River, Massachusetts mill executive Thomas Brayton hired Azorean immigrant José Carriero in 1905 as Caretaker-Gardener for his then nearly half-century-old summer home in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. The result was a unique topiary garden. Today, more than 80 pieces of topiary, 200+ species of ﬂowers, and 50 herbs continue to thrive in one of America’s most remarkable gardens. Its name, Green Animals, was the idea of Miss Alice Brayton, who acquired the estate in 1939 upon her father’s death. She left Green Animals to the Preservation Society at her own passing in 1972. Chepstow (1861) Another pre-Civil War house, Chepstow—an Italianate-style villa— was created by Newport architect George Champlin Mason as the summer residence of Edmund Schermerhorn. Acquired by Mrs. Emily Morris Gallatin in 1911, it contains the original Morris-Gallatin furnishings together with important nineteenth-century American paintings. It remained in the Morris family until Mrs. Alletta Morris McBean bequeathed it to the Preservation Society in 1986. Chepstow reﬂects the taste and collections of a descendant of one of America’s founding families.

Chateau-sur-Mer (1852) A landmark of the High Victorian Age in America, Chateau-sur-Mer was also conceived while Bellevue Avenue was still a dusty country road. It became the most palatial residence in Newport until the appearance of the Vanderbilt houses in the 1890s. The house was built for China Trade merchant William Shepard Wetmore; Mr. Wetmore’s son, George Peabody, and his wife, Edith, hired architect Richard Morris Hunt to remodel and redecorate Chateau-sur-Mer in the 1870s. He added a new mansard roof, porte-cochere, and a multi-story great hall. Florentine sculptor Luigi Frullini designed a new dining room and library. Hunt’s great hall and grand staircase were an early experiment with a theme he later repeated, on a larger scale, at Marble House and The Breakers. Today Chateau-sur-Mer remains a textbook of High Victorian design. After the death of Mr. Wetmore’s two unmarried daughters, the Preservation Society acquired the house in 1969. Chateau-sur-Mer was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2006.

Isaac Bell House (1883) Designed by the prolific architectural firm of McKim, Mead & White, the Isaac Bell House is a masterpiece of American architecture. It is one of a small group of innovative Shingle Style summer houses built in Newport in the early 1880s. The open plan and fusion of Colonial, European and Asian design motifs made it a seminal work when it first appeared, laying the groundwork for later developments in modernism by Frank Lloyd Wright and others. The commission, undertaken shortly after the renovation of Kingscote, reflects the highly experimental nature of McKim, Mead & White’s work during the early phase of its history. It resulted in the creation of one of the most influential buildings in American architecture. The Isaac Bell House was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1997.

The ladies’ reception room features superbly carved eighteenth-century French woodwork—one of the earliest known such installations in North America. The house was purchased by the Preservation Society in 1972 from the descendants of Cornelius Vanderbilt II; it achieved National Historic Landmark status in 1994. The Elms (1901) Mr. and Mrs. Edward Julius Berwind of Philadelphia and New York created The Elms as a backdrop for their art collection. In 1898, the Berwinds engaged Philadelphia architect Horace Trumbauer to design a house modeled after the eighteenth-century chateau d’Asnieres, outside of Paris. The interiors and furnishings were designed by Allard and Sons of Paris and were the setting for the Berwinds’ collection of Renaissance ceramics, eighteenth-century French and Venetian paintings, and Oriental jades. The elaborate classical revival gardens on the grounds were developed between 1907 and 1914 and include terraces displaying marble and bronze sculpture, a park of ﬁne specimen trees, and a lavish lower garden featuring marble pavilions, fountains, and sunken garden. The Preservation Society of Newport County purchased The Elms in 1962, when it was threatened with demolition, and opened the house to the public. In 1996, The Elms, too, was named a National Historic Landmark.

Marble House (1892) Built for Mr. and Mrs. William K. Vanderbilt, Marble House is a social and architectural landmark that set the pace for Newport’s subsequent transformation from a quiet summer colony of wooden houses to the legendary resort of opulent stone palaces. Mrs. Vanderbilt envisioned Marble House as her “temple to the arts” in America. Designed by the architect Richard Morris Hunt, and furnished by Parisian cabinet makers Allard and Sons, the house cost an estimated 11 million dollars, of which seven million was spent on 500,000 cubic feet of marble. Mrs. Vanderbilt sold the house to Frederick H. Prince in 1932; the Preservation Society acquired the house in 1963 through the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Harold S. Vanderbilt. It was named a National Historic Landmark in 2006.

The Breakers (1895) Built for Cornelius Vanderbilt II, The Breakers is the grandest of Newport's summer “cottages” and a symbol of the Vanderbilt family’s social and ﬁnancial preeminence in turn-of-the-century America. Designed by Richard Morris Hunt immediately after he designed Marble House, it replaced an earlier wooden cottage, also called The Breakers, which was destroyed by ﬁre in 1892. Hunt created a mansion in the Italian Renaissance style. Decorated by an international team of artists and craftsmen, the interiors include music and morning rooms crafted in Paris and bedrooms designed by the Boston designer Ogden Codman.

Rosecliff (1902) Stanford White built Rosecliff for Hermann and Teresa Oelrichs, modeling it after the Grand Trianon (1687) in the park of Versailles. Mrs. Oelrichs was born Theresa Fair in Virginia City, Nevada; her father, James Graham Fair, was a partner with Mackay, Flood and O’Brien, developers of the Comstock Lode silver mine. She married Hermann Oelrichs in 1890, becoming a leader in Newport society and making Rosecliff famous for its lavish parties. The building, a stark contrast to White’s Isaac Bell House— built nearly 20 years earlier, only a mile down Bellevue Avenue—illustrates the wide diversity of style for which Newport is known. The mansion is now preserved through the generosity of its last owners, Mr. and Mrs. J. Edgar Monroe, of New Orleans. They gave the house, its furnishings, and an endowment to the Preservation Society in 1972. [see pg 9]

General Information The Winter Antiques Show office is located to the right inside the Armory’s Park Avenue entrance. Any questions or concerns during the show should be addressed to the Winter Antiques Show’s Executive Director, Catherine Sweeney Singer at (646) 619-6030, or to arettenmaier@WinterAntiquesShow.com. East Side House Settlement assumes no responsibility for the personal property of visitors. Lost and found articles should be reported to the Show office or to a security officer. Security regulations at the Armory require packages brought into the Armory to be checked prior to entering the exhibition floor. All bags—including tote bags, shopping bags, briefcases, backpacks, and large purses—must be checked. Baby strollers are not permitted on weekends due to crowds. Smoking is not permitted. All merchandise purchased at the Winter Antiques Show must be accompanied by passes from the exhibitors from whom the items were bought. East Side House Settlement—including its Board of Managers, employees, agents, and all Winter Antiques Show committees—assumes no liability for articles purchased or sold at the show, nor does it bear any responsibility for the authenticity of articles in the Winter Antiques Show catalogue.
