ABBY ALDRICH ROCKEFELLER FOLK ART MUSEUM: REVOLUTION & EVOLUTION By Laura Pass Barry From portraits to quilts to sculpture, the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum has been showcasing premier examples of American folk art for sixty years. When the museum opened on March 15, 1957, it established a permanent home for the exceptional collection assembled decades earlier by the museum’s namesake.

Rockefeller Jr. for Williamsburg) would be an ideal location for the exhibition of Abby Aldrich Rockefeller’s American folk art collection. Indeed, the exhibition of her material brought American folk art to the public’s attention, garnering appreciation and enthusiasm for its study.
Abby Aldrich Rockefeller (1874-1948) was a forerunner in the American folk and modern art fields and was a founder of the Museum of Modern Art. Her acuity in recognizing visual analogies between modernist expression and that of American folk art was instrumental in fostering an awareness of America’s past. She assembled a comprehensive collection of paintings, drawings, and sculpture that she shared anonymously with the public in the 1932 landmark Museum of Modern Art exhibition, American Folk Art: The Art of the Common Man in America, 1750-1900. In 1935, the bulk of her collection was installed in Williamsburg, Virginia. Abby Aldrich Rockefeller’s interest in American folk art coincided with the involvement of her husband, John D. Rockefeller Jr., in the restoration of Williamsburg. That relationship led to the long-term loan and ultimate gift of her collection to Colonial Williamsburg, forming the nucleus of the future Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum. Unbeknownst to her, that unassuming act helped to place American folk art at the forefront of American art. From the time it became a public resource, the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller collection has been a leading force in American folk art scholarship. The museum, established in 1957, has published numerous catalogues and hosted over 340 exhibitions, ranging from landmark shows on prominent artists to smaller exhibitions on lesser-known subjects. This unveiling of new research and discoveries upholds one of Abby Aldrich Rockefeller’s principal interests—to foster understanding about, and appreciation for, American artists and their work. It was painted by Robert Brackman, a widely respected portraitist who also had a long career as a teacher at the Art Students League of New York.

Although Edith Gregor Halpert and Holger Cahill were instrumental in assisting Abby Aldrich Rockefeller with assembling and documenting her collection and arranging for the exhibition of her artwork, Little was largely responsible for the research and extensive cataloging of the collection.
Under the guidance and leadership of remarkable curators and directors, the museum collection has significantly expanded from the 424 objects of Abby Aldrich Rockefeller’s initial gift to over 7,600 noteworthy examples of paintings, drawings, sculpture, furniture, pottery, needlework, textiles, toys, silhouettes, and decorative useful wares. Today, the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum is the oldest continuously operating institution in the world devoted exclusively to the study and appreciation of American folk art. The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation is honored to have been selected as the loan exhibitor for the 2017 Winter Antiques Show. We are especially gratified to return to New York, where Abby Aldrich Rockefeller began collecting and where her collection first debuted. The words of Abby Aldrich Rockefeller’s son Winthrop, first spoken nearly sixty years ago, are still timely today: “Here is a varied, colorful, and appealing display of one phase of American civilization in which my mother had so much faith. I sincerely hope that everyone who sees these early examples of American art will come to discover for himself some of the same pleasure and interest that my mother found in them. Nothing delighted her more than to share her enjoyment of the Collection with others.”

This iconic portrait of an unidentified sleeping baby was acquired for Abby Aldrich Rockefeller by Edith Gregor Halpert in the early 1930s. It remains a favorite among visitors and is on display in the museum’s loan exhibition at the 2017 Winter Antiques Show.

Laura Pass Barry is the Juli Grainger Curator of Paintings, Drawings, and Sculpture at Colonial Williamsburg. The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation is dedicated to the preservation, restoration, and presentation of eighteenthcentury Williamsburg and the study, interpretation, and teaching of America’s founding principles. The Foundation operates the 301-acre restored eighteenth-century capital of Virginia as well as the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg, which include the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum and the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum.

One of these highlights was The Kingdoms of Edward Hicks, the first major exhibition on the life and work of the nineteenth-century Quaker minister and painter made famous for his Peaceable Kingdom paintings. The exhibition focused new attention on the Quaker beliefs and church politics that inspired the artist’s subject matter and featured over fifty objects, sixteen of which are owned by Colonial Williamsburg, the largest single collection of Hicks’s material.

On behalf of those East Side House serves and the board of managers, I would like to welcome you to the Winter Antiques Show! We capped our landmark year by launching the East Side House Settlement 125th Anniversary Scholarship Fund Honoring John A. Sanchez. For twenty-eight years, John led East Side House’s exponential growth. We now serve twenty-nine sites and over 10,000 residents each year. The Scholarship Fund will expand educational opportunities for exceptional students in the Bronx and northern Manhattan. A source of hope and help for motivated young people, the fund will be a fitting legacy for our longtime Executive Director, who retired at the end of 2016. John’s dedication to community service, innovative leadership, and achievement already have impacted the lives of thousands. Students in our programs reside in and around one of the nation’s poorest communities, long plagued by high crime and an undereducated, undertrained workforce. Literacy rates and educational attainment are among the lowest in the city, but services offered by East Side House Settlement help students make gains that might not otherwise be possible. In the past two years, East Side House has tripled the number of students who graduate from our high school programs and, last year alone, helped nearly 500 students gain college acceptance. This is a notable accomplishment considering that the majority of these students enrolled in our programs academically behind and with no postsecondary plan. The Winter Antiques Show is the only antiques fair that donates its entire profit to a charity. Your support of the Show funds nearly 25 percent of our philanthropic budget and allows our professional staff of approximately 600 dedicated personnel to continue to provide the services that enable families to improve their economic standing and lead fulfilling, independent lives. Jamie Drake and Caleb Anderson Drake/Anderson is a dynamic new partnership led by two of the most distinctive aesthetic voices in interior design, Jamie Drake and Caleb Anderson. Both industry leaders, the principals of Drake Design Associates and Caleb Anderson Design have brought their respective takes on glamour, curation, elegance, and livability to bear on the new venture. Their visionary, multidisciplinary design firm specializes in high-end residential and commercial projects with luxurious interiors that are glamorous yet grounded, sophisticated yet livable, and modern yet timeless.
Among Drake’s multiple honors is his longstanding presence on Architectural Digest’s prestigious AD100, the magazine’s annual compendium of the world’s top interior designers and architects, while Anderson has been cited on the rising-star lists of many publications, including House Beautiful and Lonny. Between them, they have completed sophisticated, polished interiors in many of Manhattan’s “it” buildings—including One57 and the Baccarat Residences—as well as sprawling Hamptons estates, and cutting-edge medical facilities in Florida.
Jamie Drake, one of the most recognizable names in the design field, is primarily a modernist known for his fearless approach to color and fashion-conscious sensibility. One of interior design’s brightest young lights, Caleb Anderson is most recognized for his layered approach to interiors with confident blends from a variety of historic periods. Their firms have garnered extremely discerning clienteles and achieved the highest awards and accolades in the industry.

Celerie Kemble is guided by the principle that our homes define us for others and also remind us of who we are. Known for her versatility with budgets, location, and style, Kemble’s priority is to express the personality and sentiment of her clients through gracious interiors. She delivers a mix of pragmatism and beauty in her creation of dynamic yet nuanced and comfortable rooms.
Miles Redd embarked on his interior design career with luminary antiques dealer John Rosselli and decorator Bunny Williams, and in 1998 opened his own firm in New York City. He is highly regarded for his unique aesthetic vision, characterized by a mélange of high and low, a strong sense of color, and a traditional approach with modern gestures.
Over the past fifteen years, her work in homes and commercial spaces across the United States and the Caribbean has been featured in Architectural Digest, House Beautiful, Veranda, Elle Decor, Traditional Home, Luxe, Florida Design, Better Homes and Gardens, Country Living, The Wall Street Journal, and The New York Times.
Captivated by chic at an early age, Redd finds inspiration in a wide array of venues. His trademark approach to design brings to life rooms infused with boldness, wit, fantasy, and sophistication. In 2012, Redd published The Big Book of Chic, praised in Vogue Living for its “shots of ‘party ready’ interiors and quotes of a life less ordinary.”
Kemble is the author of To Your Taste and Black & White (and a Bit in Between), and she also partners with multiple firms to produce a wide variety of product lines that deliver a combination of design and utility. Professional accolades include placement on Architectural Digest’s AD100, House and Garden’s 50 New Tastemakers, House Beautiful’s Top Designers, and Luxe’s Gold List.
Redd served as the creative director of Oscar de la Renta Home from 2003 to 2013, and his work has been featured in Vogue, W, House Beautiful, Elle Décor, Veranda, and Architectural Digest. In 2015, Redd launched a line of fabrics and wallcoverings with Schumacher, and his line of rugs with Patterson Flynn Martin debuted in 2016.

PROVENANCE King Louis XIII of France; this pistol, with its pair, is numbered 208 in the inventory of the Royal Cabinet d’Armes in the Louvre, completed in 1673. The pair of pistols is again recorded under the number 208 in subsequent inventories completed in 1717 and 1775. The pair to the present pistol is today in the collection of the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore.

Fine condition, retaining the original flame finials. One replaced backboard on uppercase, replaced brass with minor shrinkage cracks to feet which are all original. The top portion has a closed bonnettop above tombstone raised panel doors opening to a fitted interior resting on the desk top with waist molding. The lower portion has a slant-top desk lid opening to an amphitheater interior with valences above blocked drawers flanking a fan-carved central prospect door, all above four graduated blocked-front drawers supported by conforming bracket feet. Rare to find New England secretaries made from native cherry wood. Provenance: Private Collection, Roxbury, CT, purchased, 1997. 92”h (top finial), 38 3/4”w (case), 22 1/2”d

The Heritage Society East Side House Settlement has established the Heritage Society, in which membership is offered to qualified donors based on their cumulative gifts through individual annual gifts, bequests, and other forms of creative giving. Sanchez has led East Side House’s exponential growth in service to residents of the nation’s poorest congressional district. Thanks to his leadership, the organization’s services now spread to twenty-eight sites and reach over 10,000 individuals each year, helping each of them—and their families—to lead more fulfilling lives. Celebrating its 125th anniversary, East Side House continues to build on its commitment to strengthen communities in need. As a reflection of this commitment, the East Side House Settlement 125th Anniversary Scholarship Fund Honoring John A. Sanchez has been established to expand educational opportunities for exceptional students in the Bronx and northern Manhattan. 2017 WINTER ANTIQUES SHOW Catherine Sweeney Singer Executive Director, Winter Antiques Show In the Show’s sixty-third year, we welcome sixty-four continuing exhibitors as well as David Gill Gallery, Bernard Goldberg Fine Arts, Lebreton, Stephen Score, Robert Simon Fine Art, and Tambaran. We thank all our exhibitors for their dedication to creating America’s most prestigious Show—you are the Show! We also thank one of your, and our, most loyal supporters: last summer, through the Estate of Joyce Golden, East Side House Settlement received one of the largest gifts in the nonprofit’s 125 years. Joyce Golden & Associates was the ad agency to the antiques trade for decades; she knew the “East Side Show” well, as she produced the Show catalogue through 1995. Joyce’s emblem was a butterfly: the metamorphosis that began with so many of you as you built your brands over the years has given wings to the young people at East Side House through Joyce’s bequest. 2017 WINTER ANTIQUES SHOW General Information The Winter Antiques Show office during the Show’s run is accessible through the front hall at the Park Avenue Armory. Any questions or concerns during the Show should be addressed to the Winter Antiques Show’s Executive Director, Catherine Sweeney Singer at (646) 619-6030, or to our Assistant Director, Michael Diaz-Griffith: mdg@winterantiquesshow.com. East Side House Settlement assumes no responsibility for the personal property of visitors. Lost and found articles should be reported to the Show office or to a security officer.
The Show’s security regulations strictly limit the size and type of bag that may be carried onto the exhibition floor. All bags—including tote bags, shopping bags, briefcases, backpacks, and large purses— must be checked at the coat check. Baby strollers may not be permitted on weekends due to crowds. Smoking is not permitted. All merchandise purchased at the Winter Antiques Show must be accompanied by passes from the exhibitors from whom the items were purchased.
