Welcome to the very first issue of SpotLight on Buckie, Keith and District. We hope that you find the contents useful. There is regular up to date information on Clubs & Societies, What’s On in Keith and Buckie, School contacts, Term dates, Upcoming holidays, Tide times for the beach in Buckie (to assist with ease of walking there) and then Community Council news. This is quite a lot to pack in and we do also rely on the assistance of locals to provide us with details of forthcoming events. If you are involved in booking halls for events of any type then please phone us on 01309 690063 or email them to david@spotlighton.co.uk. Please note that the deadline for the next Issue (April) is 3rd March. SpotLight would not be possible without the support of Local Businesses who choose to advertise and we would like to thank those who have helped in this first issue. Your support is much appreciated.
HOUSING NEEDS
Is there a need for more housing for rent? or low cost home ownership in your community?
On behalf of the Moray Council, housing needs research is underway in 17 Cullen and Buckie Coastal Villages to help identify local housing needs and find out if there is a need for more housing for rent or low cost home ownership.
If you receive a housing questionnaire through your door, please complete and return it. Your information is very important to us; it will help us to get a clear and accurate account of the housing needs in your community.
For further information please contact Rural Housing Enabler Kim Siu - 07786 225 639 E-Mail: kim@ruralhousingscotland.org Web site: www.ruralhousingscotland.org The Rural Housing Service is a national charity that provides free assistance to rural communities and individuals across Scotland, helping to develop practical solutions for local housing requirements. Huntly Peregrine Wildwatch The Forestry Commission award winning Huntly Peregrine Wildwatch Centre (HPWW) gives a wonderful opportunity to view one of our iconic and spectacular birds of prey close up and in their natural habitat. The site is an old quarry and is the result of a volcanic magma chamber and is an Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) in its own right. Scottish Natural Heritage are now designing interpretation highlighting the geology of the quarry. The centre has been open every season since 2002 and has grown in stature every year, regularly being mentioned in local and national press and also appearances on national TV. It has won several prestigious awards for tourism and customer care, including the highly acclaimed Scottish Thistle Award twice and the Northern Lights award. The centre is open daily from March to September, with all ability access and toilets. The interpretative centre and hide are staffed by knowledgeable and friendly Forestry Commission wardens and volunteers, ensuring the visitors’ experience is a memorable one. We have excellent CCTV coverage giving close
up viewing of the nest site, peregrines, quarry and all its inhabitants. The fantastic viewing facilities within the quarry offer the visitor a rare insight into our wonderful NorthEast wildlife. Binoculars and telescopes are provided for visitors to use. Feeding stations at the visitor centre and our top hide give page 4 - March 2010

visitors the opportunity to observe up close the red squirrels as well as a huge array of woodland birds, all literally inches away from the viewing windows. The birds have also done well over the years. Sixteen young peregrines (eyasses) have successfully fledged over the past 7 years and of these eyasses, fifteen have been rung. HPWW has so much to offer and not just for the
serious bird watcher, it provides a great destination for a family outing and even a new experience for those not having had the opportunity or knowledge to enjoy our wonderful countryside. We would love to hear from all school and non school groups wishing to visit the centre and discover what we can offer. Please contact us so we can tailor your visit. We also have a number of places for junior volunteer wardens aged 12-16, which has been a very successful venture with many young people returning year on year. We are always looking to encourage and involve more volunteers, both the young, and the young at heart. If interested please visit our website at www.forestry.gov.uk/huntlyperegrines A series of events are run throughout the season and information on these can be found at our website, through the Forestry Commission events leaflet or by contacting the Peregrine Centre on 01466 760790 (between March and September). www.forestry.gov.uk/scotland

North East
Explore your forests! Culbin is ideal for walking, with miles of paths and tracks to explore, winding among the pine covered dunes and coastline. The Hill 99 Trail is an ideal walk for first-time visitors and takes about 2-3 hours starting from the main car park at Wellhill. Along the way, you will find the dragonfly pond, a pretty pond where you can admire brilliantly-coloured dragonflies during the summer.
Huntly Peregrine Wildwatch Centre Home to the fastest living creatures on earth – a visit to the multi award winning Huntly Peregrine Wildwatch is a day out to remember. Come and see us at the Bin Quarry, just off the A96 near Huntly, where our friendly wardens will keep you informed and entertained. For opening times, please contact the forest district via the contact details below. Admission free.

Pastoral Letter and Church Meetings While in Israel I had the opportunity to bathe in the Dead Sea. After changing into my swimwear and while walking down to the water I met two young men dragging a screaming friend towards a water tap where they began to spray his eyes with fresh water. It was obvious that the unfortunate had managed to get some of the heavy saline sea water into his eyes. I approached the Dead Sea with great caution and enjoyed the sensation of being unsinkable as I floated on its salty surface. Although the salt nipped I did have a feeling of cleanliness and wellbeing. While on a night time fishing trip with two friends in the Brazilian Amazon we had a quarter of a mile walk from the jeep to the river along a difficult path which we lit with an efficient torch. On arriving at the river the bulb in the torch gave up and we were left in complete darkness under the tree canopy. We stumbled blindly back to the jeep through the undergrowth getting jagged and scratched by the unsympathetic forest before arriving chastened by our lack of preparation.
They say a picture is worth a thousand words, that is why Jesus used picture words such as salt, city and light. ‘You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men. You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.’ Matthew 5:13-16. The salt from the Dead Sea is graded and much of it has lost its saltiness and is used on paths and pavements. Anyone who is going to be a Christian and follow Christ must be willing to stand out. In fishing communities along the Moray coast, salt and light have always been important. Salt to preserve fish and lighthouses to guide the boats into harbour. More recently with the record snow levels, salt has enabled the roads to remain open. When Jesus spoke again

to the people, he said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’ John 8:12. His life, teaching and sacrifice are light that give understanding so that we can have a meaningful relationship with God. There is right and wrong, good and evil, light and darkness. When we follow Jesus and trust in Him, we get His help to choose the right and refuse the wrong, do good and shun evil and to walk in the light and avoid moral darkness. We become the salt of the earth. Our lives are tastier and preserved from things that would decay. When through faith in Christ we become the salt of the earth then we have healing qualities - salt heals. As Christ forgives and heals us we can forgive other and enjoy healing in our human relationships. Salt creates thirst and gives us a thrust and desire for God and spiritual things. For those who trust in Christ He helps to make life bright and tasty. Rev. Vincent MacDougall Buckie Baptist Church

The Great Wall Run!
Sweet & Sour Chicken
®
SpotLight Chef’s Confidential
This month we are going all Chinese with this great recipe and it’s really easy. The reason we have gone Chinese this month is that I am going to Beijing in May to run the Great Wall of China Marathon. Some say it is the hardest marathon in the world and some say if there is one marathon you have to run before you die it would be the great wall. The Great Wall Marathon will be a tough, beautiful and definitely extraordinary experience. The 5164 steps of the Great Wall will put me to the test, The Great Wall Marathon is the ideal way to combine an unusual running event with exploring one of the world’s most astonishing sights. We have hooked up with Tom Chamberlain from Marys Meals Charity to raise money. I would like to say a big thanks to DC (Doug Cowie) and the Sunday morning club for helping me get the miles in!! For the sauce 4 tbsp chicken stock 2 tbsp tomato ketchup 1 tbsp soy sauce 2 tbsp rice wine vinegar 2 tbsp caster sugar For the batter 1 egg yolk freshly ground black pepper 1½ tbsp cornflour 1 tbsp milk Ingredients 200g white rice 4 tbsp vegetable oil 250g chicken breast, diced 75g carrots, cut into thin 'matchsticks' 60g baby sweetcorn, sliced 60g green beans, trimmed 2 tbsp sliced spring onions
page 10 - March 2010
Method Cook the rice according to the instructions on the packet then make the sauce by mixing together all the sauce ingredients in a bowl. Beat together the batter ingredients in another bowl. Heat two tablespoons of oil in a saucepan. Dip the chicken in the batter, then fry it carefully. Remove from the pan and set aside. Next, stir fry the carrots, baby corn and green beans in the remaining two tablespoons of oil for four minutes. Add the sauce and boil for one minute. Then add the chicken and spring onions and heat through. Spoon a helping of sweet and sour chicken on top of a bed of rice. Serve. Climbing the Great Wall of China might not take your breath away but the scenery most certainly will. Happy Cooking! John McCruden head chef, chapter one restaurant forres high street
