Words by the Wayside “...for thy heart is not right in the sight of God.” (Acts 8:21)
Reader, in the sight of others your life might seem good and upright, but how do you stand before God? It is impossible to flee from Him who is everywhere, or from the all-searching of His eyes. Reader, all have sinned, and all need The Saviour, The Lord Jesus Christ, neither is there salvation in any other; for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. Are you saved?

Here at SpotLight, we are constantly looking at providing both useful and interesting information for our readers and following a number of suggestions we are, this month, introducing a regular new book feature - The Monthly Book Club. For the feature we have tried to pick a good cross section of book types which are mostly new releases (we are fortunate to have an ex librarian on our staff to help us with the selections!). Most of the books listed will be available in print and on Kindle.

Pastoral Le er & Church Meetings Romans 1:16 New International Version (NIV) 16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile. Last week as I prepared to write this article I heard the news of the passing of Billy Graham into heaven. Billy Graham had a remarkable ministry. As an evangelist he had the privilege of communicating the gospel to literally millions of people through his life. Billy Graham famously commented “My home is in Heaven. I'm just traveling through this world ” . But what was is it that gave Billy Graham and what is it that can give us confidence that we too will go to heaven when we die? Billy Graham’s confidence was not in his works nor was it even in his character. It was rooted in his faith in the good news of the gospel. The gospel is good news.
It is good news because in the gospel we recognise God’s love for the world, which is most clearly demonstrated at Calvary. In John 3v16 we read ‘ For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Billy Graham commented that ‘“God proved his love on the Cross. When Christ hung, and bled, and died, it was God saying to the world, ‘I love you.’” Billy Graham knew that the certainty of a home in heaven was rooted not in following a religion or a set of rules but through a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. Becoming a Christian is not easy as it involves a turning away from sin i.e repentance. However, the good news is if we repent and confess our sin, He is faithful and just, to forgive our sin and cleanse

us from all unrighteousness. Therefore, If we have professed faith in Jesus Christ we recognise there is, therefore, now no condemnation for those that are in Christ Jesus (Romans 8v1). This contains great news, because we can know like the apostle Paul Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come The old has gone, the new has come (2 Corinthians 5v17). I wonder if you too have professed faith in the good news of the gospel like Billy Graham and millions of others. It is important that we realise the only certainty of us going to heaven is found not in our good works or deeds or even our church membership but through accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour. Parliament Blog & Tide Times As the MP for Moray, defence issues are always high up my agenda given we are home to both Kinloss Barracks and RAF Lossiemouth. Both bases play an important role in Moray life and the local economy. I also know the welcome our service men and women and their families receive here is greatly appreciated by all. While the wintry weather resulted in the postponement of the Secretary of State for Defence cutting the first sod in the groundwork’s for the arrival of the new P8 Poseidon aircraft, these works continue. This represents significant investment by the UK Government and Boeing. RAF Lossiemouth is a major strategic base for our military and the investment we will see both on the camp and in the local area over the next few years will no doubt benefit local businesses and our communities.

This year marks 100 years since some women got the vote. Nicola Sturgeon (our female first Minister who appointed a gender balanced cabinet) led a debate in Holyrood to mark the occasion. A lot has changed in 100 years, and for that I am truly thankful. But while we have made some bold changes already, let’s not be complacent, or take progress for granted. With that in mind, I am glad to see the theme of this year’s International Women’s Day is #PressforProgress. We need concerted, deliberate action if we are going to achieve gender equality. Research shows that gender parity is over 200 years away. Women should not have to wait this long for equality, we deserve it now. Maree Todd MSP

Many of us will have watched Blue Planet and seen the devastating impact of plastic in our seas. With straws, carrier bags and other plastic waste ending up in the ocean, suffocating wildlife and polluting our beautiful coastline. Undoubtedly, plastic straws are contributing to the increase in plastic litter in our seas, and so much of the litter we find on our beaches is plastic based, as I’ve seen first-hand when I’ve joined the Spey Bay Dolphin Centre on some of their beach cleans. That litter on our shores and in our seas is a result of our behaviour, with all the single use plastic we throw away every day. It’s abundantly clear the damage that plastics are causing to our planet and it is vital that we do everything we can to reduce the volume of plastic that we use and discard. So I am hugely supportive of the campaign to ban single use plastic straws and am pleased that the Scottish Government has committed to a ban in Scotland.

Making Whole Family Recovery Possible Arrows is a holistic service for individuals both Adults experiencing drug and alcohol problems, and children and families The range of supports available in Arrows are both individual and group centred and can be used as part of a whole family approach to recovery or one to one support personally tailored and unique to each family’s circumstances.
program. Arrows work to improve coping strategies and parenting approaches through supporting activities, play and positive experiences. Arrows can support parents to recognise the needs of their children throughout their recovery journey, how to support them through the changes involved and in hearing their views within the family’s support.
Worried about a loved one and their substance use? Friends, family or others connected to an individual
nature of treatment and support with Arrows is upmost and we support individuals to understand the boundaries of sharing information, as well as making informed choices when involving loved ones within our whole family approach.
Worried about your substance use and its impact on your family and relationships? Individuals experiencing drug and alcohol issues may feel isolated from loved ones, unable to seek support from those closest to them or pressurised into establishing positive changes which can lead to deterioration within relationships, and creating further challenges for recovery. Arrows can support you to involve loved ones in your recovery at a pace and level that suits you. We can guide you to have conversations with loved ones inviting their involvement within your recovery plan. Many of our activities, groups and events are family inclusive; we provide focused support through couples and family counselling. Arrows work with parents experiencing substance issues to support their role as a parent within their recovery treatment
a close relationship with someone struggling with an addiction can be frustrating, painful and sometimes a lonely journey. We can work with you using a range of CBT based tools, helping you cope and support your loved one. Many of these skills are valuable for the family even if your loved one does not enter treatment or has already begun the treatment process. Arrows can support friends and family to understand and discuss problematic substance use with their loved one to help prevent situations escalating.
Linking with Carers Support Family members often don’t recognise themselves as unpaid carers even though they are entitled to the carer supports available. Arrows and Quarriers Carers Support Service (Moray) can work with you on a joint register to ensure access to the training, short breaks and group supports available through their Service.

NOT JUST ANOTHER ICE-CREAM SHOP Portsoy Ice-cream shop is in the heart of Portsoy Village, Banffshire
W
e heard about this amazing ice-cream shop from a few people so we decided to go check it out for ourselves. When we arrived we noticed that there was a lovely seating area, which was perfect, as the weather was not great outside and so we decided to sit in. We went over to the counter to have a look and noticed the huge variety of ice-creams, hot and cold sauces, lots of different toppings and the amount of different ways you can have your ice-cream. What stood out for me were the waffles, especially the Bubble Waffles. After much thought we decided to have the Sharing Platter which consists of 6 scoops of ice-cream (your own choice), two hot sauces, frozen berries, marshmallows and waffles. The Sharing Platter definitely had more than enough on it for two people with six different ice-creams. We chose Bubblegum, Creme Egg, After Eight, Honeycomb, Vanilla and Raspberry Ripple, underneath which, were the waffles with chocolate sauce. This was accompanied on the side by Salted Caramel hot sauce, Fudge hot sauce, and marshmallows. We also wanted to try the Bubble Waffle which looked amazing – this has a scoop of ice-cream, hot sauce with fudge and marshmallow toppings. The Bubble Waffle was a delight to eat and it was so good I ate most of it. Our visit to the Portsoy Ice-Cream shop was certainly a treat and I will be going again very soon. I now know why people
talk about this ice-cream shop and say it's different from the rest. Both the ice-cream and waffles are home made, the staff are so friendly and very helpful. If you would like to take ice-cream home they offer a selection box which has 16 scoops of your choice, the box can keep the ice-cream perfect for 1.5 hours of travel. The Portsoy Ice-Cream shop does even more offering hot chocolate, coffee, tea and milkshakes. They also cater for birthdays, weddings and lots of other different types of events. There are gifts in the shop and selections of jam, marmalade and chutney. It really is an amazing place to visit and a treat for all the family, I will definitely be recommending the Portsoy Ice-Cream Shop. After your ice-cream there is so much more to explore in Portsoy. clean-up the grass. The price is probably similar too.
The main task of the off-season is scarifying out moss and thatch, and it is best done either at the end of a season (autumn) or just before a new season starts (spring). Some enthusiasts do it twice ! The general advice is don’t scarify once the grass has started growing. New grass in the spring will be damaged by the rather traumatic and invasive scarification process.

pril tends to be the month when everything in the garden starts to wake up, and on the first of the sunny days my phone starts to ring off the hook and it’ll be November before I know it! I love it though, this time of year, especially so as I’ve been doing lots of work in my own garden that will start to show itself soon enough – plants and trees that have gone in ‘bare root’ will suddenly burst into life, belying their straggly appearance when they arrived in cardboard boxes a couple of months ago! I’ll be looking to spend some time in the garden before the spring growth spurt kicks in (usually some time in May, and it lasts about 6-8 weeks). During the spring growth spurt, you have to work hard to stand still sometimes, so a bit of extra effort now will pay dividends.
Do gently hoe over your borders to disrupt any emerging weeds under the soil. Do dig well-rotted horse or cow manure into your beds. Do cut your lawn if it needs it, but just a light cut for the first one. Do prune Forsythia sp. once it has finished flowering. Do scarify your lawn with a spring-tine rake for smaller areas, or hire a machine for larger areas. Do add a lawn feed to your grass. Do treat decks and hard surfaces for moss.
Don’t apply lawn mosskiller by hand, however careful you are it will create ugly black streaks that take ages to recover. Use a spreader. Don’t go overboard with your lawn feed if you have large areas of grass and no time to cut it. I only ever use an autumn feed on my lawn which has a bit less nitrogen in. Don’t forget to top-dress plant pots – skim a bit of old compost away, and add some new compost. Don’t forget to start spraying roses to help keep pests away. You can get organic sprays that use things like garlic. Once the overnight temperatures are over 6C, the grass will start growing in earnest, so be sure your mower is working nicely. Mow at least once a fortnight to prevent weeds setting seed. If you do scarify, as advised above, don’t mow it for a few days afterwards as it is a stressful process for the grass.
I’LL BE ADDING SOME MORE BLOG ARTICLES OVER THE COMING WEEKS ABOUT HOW TO DO VARIOUS JOBS IN THE GARDEN, SO KEEP AN EYE ON MY WEBSITE AT WWW.THEMOUNTAINGARDENER.CO.UK. IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, OR IDEAS FOR USEFUL THINGS YOU WOULD LIKE TO READ ABOUT HERE, OR ON MY BLOG, THEN JUST DROP ME A LINE.

Reader, do you no longer fear God? Do you transgress His Laws without hesitation and continually do that which is right in your own eyes, following self and rejecting the Saviour Jesus Christ? You shall give an account of yourself before God. God is not mocked; whatsoever you sow, you will reap. What are you doing with Jesus, whom is called Christ? Eternity where?
