When I was young, I think it is fair to say I did not like poetry. I came across this poem the other day which would have amused me at school, I believe: “This is Just to Say,” (1934) I have eaten the plums that were in the icebox

and which you were probably saving for breakfast

Forgive me they were delicious so sweet and so cold

Peter said: "Now I am sure that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from the hands of Herod". Acts 12:11 (NRSV)

In the Prayer Book of the Scottish Episcopal Church, the month of August begins with the celebration of St Peter's miraculous escape from prison and certain execution. Luke in his book "The Acts of the Apostles" notes at the beginning of Chapter 12 that: "About that time King Herod…had James, the brother of John, killed with the sword….he proceeded to arrest Peter also….While Peter was kept in prison, the church prayed fervently to God for him." Acts12:1-5 (NRSV) God answered the church's prayers by sending an angel to free Peter from his prison cell, and when Peter found himself walking along a lane – a free man, he realised that God had intervened and said to himself: "Now I am sure that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from the hands of Herod". Acts 12:11 (NRSV) This story is a striking example of the

power of God to watch over his word and protect those who proclaim it. This was the second time God sent an angel to open he prison doors, in Acts Chapter 5, we read about the Apostles preaching the message of Christian salvation in the Temple – the very centre of Jewish religious power, and they are cast into prison to await a show trial. When the Jewish leaders sent for them, they found the prison empty and the Apostles back in Temple preaching the faith of Christ. Peter told the Jewish leaders: "We must obey God rather than any human authority. The God of our ancestors raised up Jesus whom you killed by hanging him on a tree. God exalted him at his right hand as Leader and Saviour that he might give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins". Acts 5:29-31 (NRSV) Peter's words summarise the Christian faith: we are called to obedience to God's will, even if God's ways are at variance with the norms of secular society – we are called to love and not to compete, to trust God and not ourselves, to recognise our

failings, to repent of our misdoings and to seek forgiveness through Jesus our advocate in heaven. The sending of the angel to release the Apostles and then later to release Peter shows that God's will and purpose will prevail over human schemes to scupper God's plans. We read in Acts Chapter 12 that, after Peter's release, despite the execution of James the leader of the local Church in Jerusalem: "The Word of God continued to advance and gain adherents". Acts 12:24 (NRSV) Do not be afraid to express your faith in Jesus, do not be afraid to live your life in accordance with Jesus's teachings – think of the persecution of Christians in the past and be thankful that we are free to pray and worship openly in our Churches.

It’s some time since my last contribution to Spotlight and a lot has happened since then. It was a huge honour and privilege to be elected as Member of Parliament for Moray and I would like to share with Spotlight readers what I said about my predecessor after the result was announced. While Angus Robertson and I have very different political beliefs, he served his Moray constituents extremely well during his sixteen years as MP. I will seek to represent people in the same efficient and professional way during my time as MP. My constituency office will remain in Forres and is available for people to pop into to raise any concerns with me. I will also be holding regular surgeries and am always available on email at douglas.ross.mp@parliament.uk or on the phone. I want to be as accessible as possible for everyone in Moray, no matter how they voted at the election.

With the Scottish Parliament in recess for the summer holidays my annual summer surgery tour is well underway. Summer recess gives me the chance to visit communities throughout Moray and meet with constituents in our smallest communities and to catch up with organisations at the heart of rural Moray. I’ve also enjoyed visiting some of our fantastic annual local events, including our first class Highland Games and summer fetes. Everyone involved in the organisation and running of these events deserves huge praise given the massive role they play in attracting visitors to the area and in keeping these longstanding traditions alive. With a few weeks left before I return to Parliament, I have a pretty packed diary which will keep me busy with lots of local issues. Constituents can keep up to date with what I’m up to in Moray and in the Scottish Parliament by following my MSP Facebook page. You can find me here: facebook.com/RichardLochheadMSP.

Words by the Wayside “As I live, saith the Lord God, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live.” (Ezekiel 33:11)

Reader, don’t walk away from the mercy of God demonstrated in Jesus Christ’s death on the Cross of Calvary for your sin. Christ died for the ungodly, it is only the ungodly Christ can save, for He came to save sinners and if you don’t acknowledge you are a sinner and have need of a Saviour, you can never be saved from the penalty of your sins. Behold, Now is the accepted time for you. Behold Now is the day of salvation.

My Grass is Mostly Weeds and Moss – Am I Too Late to Fix it This Year ? No, spring and summer months are the best months to achieve an effective weedkill application. You will likely need 2 applications 2 months apart.

scarification. The BBC Beechgrove Garden does a feature on this every year in one of their last episodes of the series You should be able to clear both weeds and moss this season therefore, if you start now.

If you want to do this yourself, the garden centres have products on the shelves, but be careful which weedkill you buy. The total weedkillers such as Pathclear and Weedol should NOT be used on lawns. They are total herbicides for use on driveways, paths etc and kill all green leafy plants (including grass). You need a selective, broadleaf weedkiller for use on lawns. We’re actually offering to do this first weedkill for you for FREE as part of our Summer Offer (see opposite). Just get in touch by phone or email..You need to have NPTC accreditation (City & Guilds) to spray herbicides on customers’ lawns, which obviously we do. The moss clearance generally follows on in the autumn and might include both a mosskill application and

THE DROUTHY COBBLER

Music lovers are in for a treat at the Drouthy Cobbler this month, with a wide range of genres and styles ready to be enjoyed. They kick off on 5th August with Saltfishforty, from the Orkney Islands. Douglas Montgomery (fiddle/viola) and Brian Cromarty (songs/guitar/mandola) combine the rich traditional music of Orkney with original compositions. Their blend of traditional, contemporary and original material, influenced also by Americana, East European folk, plus a high-octane whiff of heavy metal leads to a raw, thrilling sound not to be missed. On 13th, they play host to Ben Maggs, an award winning singer-songwriter who has been described as 'mesmerising', 'crackling with creativity' and 'magnificent'. Inspired by wild nature, human nature and the nature of love, Ben’s ‘stunningly beautiful vocals’, melodies and poetic lyrics, are all wrapped in the warmth of artfully played acoustic guitar. For those of a louder nature, Ayrshire based bands, The Hostiles and Spoke Too Soon, will be bringing upbeat energy of west coast US ska punk to the less-sunny climes of northern Scotland. Their take is spirited and infectious, combining guitars riffs, in-your-face vocals and a two-pronged brass backbone of trumpet and trombone. It’s a formula that’s helped the five-piece be described as 'Awesome!' by Reel Big Fish'. For a more traditional sound, Glasgow’s own Eddie & Luc will be showing why they are one of the most highly regarded duo’s on the scene on 21st, whilst Chris Sesar & Gill Halliday will be providing some Celtic folk, roots & country music with a brush of gypsy jazz on 27th. They round off their month on 30th with their highly regarded Drouthy Cobbler Comedy Club featuring some of the country's best comedians. As always, please be aware that while live comedy can often be hilarious, it is also highly subjective and some material might not be to your tastes!

Tomato and Red Pepper soup This is without a doubt one of my absolute favourite soup recipes. It is just so amazingly rich, warming and delicious. I love the bright red colour too. All of the ingredients are naturally wonderful, however, it is the roasting process that takes this soup to the next level as it really intensifies the original flavours, making them even more scrumptious. Ingredients: 3 White onions 3 Red peppers 2nd ripe tomatoes 1 Bulb garlic 2 Red chilli's 2 Tins chopped tomatoes 1 Litre vegetable stock Salt and pepper to taste Fresh basil to serve Method: Preheat the oven to 200 degrees, half the tomatoes, peppers, garlic and place on a baking tray. Drizzle with a little olive oil and roast in the oven for 30 to 40 minutes or until brown and blistered. Meanwhile, roughly chop the onions and sweat in a large saucepan for 5 to 10 minutes. Add in all the roasted vegetables and stock, season and simmer for about 15 minutes. Remove from the heat and allow to cool slightly then puree with a stick blender and pass through a sieve using the back of a spoon to work the juice through. Adjust seasoning accordingly. Reheat to serve and garnish with fresh torn basil leaves. Everybody has their favourite bread to accompany soup but, for me, this one cries out for some freshly warmed Ciabatta, available from most local supermakets now. Enjoy!!

Words by the Wayside “...they ceased not from their own doings, nor from their stubborn way.” (Judges 2:19)

Reader, Sin grows by indulgence and spiritual fools find sin funny. But sin always pays wages. Sin is putting yourself first and God nowhere, and doing that which is right in your own eyes, being a lover of pleasure rather than a lover of God. Is that you? Have you any sorrow for your sins? Outside of you turning to God in repentance and faith in Jesus Christ His Son for salvation, you will have all eternity where your sins will make you sorry. God loves you and Christ died for you, reject the God of all comfort no more.

The River Lossie is open - for angling

Looking for a new way to get some fresh air and exercise in the great outdoors? How about a peaceful, and hopefully exciting, day fishing for sea trout on the River Lossie? The Elgin Angling Association is open for business after five years of disruption due to the building of the Elgin Flood Scheme. All areas of the river are accessible again and the Angling Association is recruiting new members to fish their beats from just south of Lossiemouth, through Elgin and upstream to above the Cloddach Bridge. There are hints of good things to come as the fishing season opens in April –anglers from the Association walked the river at the end of last year and reported excellent stocks of fish in the river. "The best for the past twenty years- with a noticeable increase in adult salmon and sea trout”. Findhorn, Nairn & Lossie Fisheries Trust Biologist, Bob Laughton, also walked the river in December and counted numerous ‘redds’ from just south of Elgin to near Dallas. ‘Redds’ are areas of disturbed gravel where fish have laid and fertilised eggs. These are all signs of good numbers of healthy mature fish returning to the Lossie and of more fish to come in the future. Surveys of the river in 2016 also showed excellent numbers of juvenile salmon and trout. David Houldsworth, Chair of the Lossie District Salmon Fishery Board said: “It is most encouraging to have evidence now of good stocks of juvenile fish in the river. With the flood prevention scheme now complete the Angling Associations can once more encourage interest from both young and not so young in fishing on the beautiful River Lossie. “ The River Lossie is known for its sea trout fishing. Fly fishing is encouraged, but bait fishing is allowed, opening up the angling to those who want to learn to fish without having to immediately learn the intricacies of fly fishing. In the interests of conserving the stocks of these fantastic fish, we encourage the safe return of sea trout, and under Scottish Government legislation all salmon must be returned to the Lossie.

Anglers on the Lossie say “If you get a bit of water, the sport can be frantic and fantastic!” Where else can you indulge in the contemplative sport of angling in the middle of a town? Turn a corner in the middle of Elgin and there is a stretch of riverbank members of Elgin Angling Association can fish from- accessible to all ages and most abilities. Association members recommend a few good fishing spots – around the back of the Moray Leisure Centre and along to Glen Moray Distillery, as well as the pools near the Cloddach Bridge. Angling on the Lossie is very affordable- The Elgin Angling Association was set up with the aim to provide salmon & sea trout fishing to the people of Moray at reasonable cost. The annual permit for an adult is £60, concessions £35, and for a junior (under 16) is Free. Annual, weekly and day permits are available from The Angling Centre on Moss Street in Elgin. Contact Fred Rhind, President Elgin Angling Association, Tel: 01343 860360, Email: rhind7@aim.com The Elgin Angling Association has suffered in recent years due to the flood scheme disruption. The Angling Association fully supported the Elgin flood alleviation scheme and did not wish to put any barriers in the way of protecting houses and businesses from flooding. Many local anglers have gone elsewhere or stopped fishing altogether during the works but now is the time to come back!
