Grampian Macmillan Cancer Centre Project Are you undergoing treatment for cancer at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary or Dr. Gray’s Hospital, Elgin and need advice on benefits, debt, housing or employment issues? A cancer diagnosis can have an enormous impact on someone’s income and many people don’t realise they may be eligible for financial help. The Grampian Macmillan Cancer Centre Project was established in 2007 to ensure people affected by cancer in Grampian receive the financial help and support they need. Much of our work with clients takes place over the telephone, however The Pension Service is able to offer a

We can offer advice on: Benefits – helping clients to get all they are entitled to as early as possible. Debt – often clients have to give up work when diagnosed with cancer as do their partners in some cases, resulting in a drop in household income. Housing – clients may be living in unsuitable accommodation – we can signpost people to the appropriate agency for advice. Employment – we can help clients with issues such as time off for treatment and returning to work on reduced hours. Grants – we can look into all possible available grants. The main grants we apply for are through Macmillan. However, we have secured grants from other sources. Any health or social care professional can refer into the project and clients can self refer. Our service is free of charge and totally confidential. If you think we can help, please contact: Grampian Macmillan Project, Moray CAB, 30-32 Batchen Street, Elgin, IV30 1BH Tel 01343 549042, email MacmillanProject@MorayCAB.casonline.org.uk

home visiting service for the over 60s. If clients do prefer face to face rather than telephone contact, we can visit you in hospital, at The Oaks or arrange to see you at the Citizens Advice Bureau in Elgin.

PASTORAL LETTER I have been thinking about Jesus being called the Servant King for a while now. Mark 10:45 says, “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” So, if the greatest person that ever lived, who was actually the Son of God, can call Himself a servant, then I began to think of my own life and my conduct as regards other people. I asked myself some tough questions: Do I expect others to serve me in my day to day living, or am I looking for ways to serve others? Am I willing to put other people before me, or do I bowl straight in, pushing them to the side? Would I give my life so that others would live and flourish? We, as a nation, have just commemorated the centenary of the 1st World War. The sacrifice of lives in that conflict was immeasurable. People were willing to sacrifice their lives so that strangers like you and I could live in freedom. It was the same in the 2nd World War and so many other wars that our countrymen have fought. What self-less acts of heroism have taken place in the name of freedom. I saw on a social media site how some folks had taken a

photograph of the Union Jack being burned in the name of freedom. Regardless of our personal views on what the result of the referendum should be, to burn our flag is not demonstrating freedom, but a very narrow view of a mindless few. It is so disrespectful of the past sacrifices. But this type of behaviour is no less problematic when it comes to how Churches are viewed - and Christians are viewed. We have freedom of speech in this country, which was one of the things fought for and won. Christians have a right to voice their views, as long as it is done in accordance with the truth found in the Bible. It seems to me that those opposed to the Christian faith get offended so easily when a Christian view is expressed, which is not right. On the other hand, I have experienced bigoted and erroneous statements by so called Christians who seem to forget that our Lord and Saviour is a servant. If He is a servant, and He is, why do we find it so difficult to be of the same character and mindset? Over the last few months and years I have heard so much of what Christians are against, rather that what we stand for. We

wear these bracelets with the letters, ‘WWJD’ on them, which stands for ‘What Would Jesus Do’. Maybe we should ask ourselves that question more of ourselves and actually do what Jesus would do. I don’t think we should be running around, shouting at sections of society and arguing our points of view - we can point to the Word of God for clarity in these situations. But our stance should be very clear to all who look at us and it is found in Mark 12:30-31, “And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” Can we be those who can love one another, even if we consider each other to be wrong? Jesus Himself said that He didn’t come to condemn the world but to save the world. Let’s do what Jesus would do.

With only a few weeks to go until the Independence Referendum on 18 September it will be of no surprise to folk that this is the main thing filling my time! It is a frequent topic of conversation in the street, on buses and trains, amongst friends and in workplaces. The referendum debate has clearly engaged people in Scotland’s political future more than any other political campaign in recent times, which I believe is very positive for engagement between politicians like myself and the people we represent. If you have questions to ask then don’t hesitate to get in touch with me either by email to angus.robertson.mp@parliament.uk or by post to 9 Wards Road, Elgin, IV30 1NL.

Tattie Scones! That was the order of the day at Piping Hot Forres where I went head-to-head with Angus Robertson MP to make the traditional tattie treats with a twist ...and the result of the head-to-head… we were both beaten by the talented Mary Greer, who works at Mackenzie Cruickshank, who made a haggis and neeps tattie scone called the ‘Rabbie’! Huge congratulations to the organisers of Piping Hot Forres for an amazing event, which pulled in thousands of visitors to hear the incredible sound of thousands of pipers. Well done! "The best fun

EVER!!"

Review Sunday 6th July

Looking for a fun-filled family night out? Then Pinz is the answer! Under new management, there is definitely a new vibe. We were greeted with a smile and decided to eat first and were directed to the restaurant and bar, aptly named "The Gutter Bar & Grill", which was spacious and vibrant with a great buzz. The bar was well stocked and the menu was packed with all the favourites to suit all tastes. The boys had Chicken Nuggets and Hamburger from the Kids Menu, which includes all their favourites and comes with chips or smiley faces (beans optional) and a glass of squash. Both were generous portions and their empty plates were testament to the quality. Tamsyn chose the Chicken Fillets and I had the Haddock, both were served with a portion of chips and a side salad. Everything was superbly cooked and enough to leave us totally satisfied. The staff were professional and friendly throughout, catering to our every need without being imposing. With no room for desert (although there were some tempting choices) we headed for the bowling area, swapped our shoes, and headed for our lane. A great time was had by all in pursuit of that elusive 'strike' I won, of course! Pinz is so much more than a bowling alley. It is a great place to eat and drink with friends and family. The bar has wall mounted screens for sport lovers as well as pool tables and dart boards. There is a large area dedicated to arcade games and an air hockey table and let us not forget “Lunar Land", a large soft play area perfect for letting the kids loose. The venue also caters for children’s parties and conferences and weather permitting, you can ride the rodeo bull or sheep or attempt the bungee run - if you dare. All in all a great outing in a fun atmosphere for all ages.

Words by the Wayside The Lord Jesus says "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28)

"He that will love life and see good days" must come in repentance and faith to Christ and receive Him as their Lord and Saviour; and when those "good days" upon earth are over he will prove that in God's presence is fulness of joy and at His right hand there are pleasures for evermore. Do not let the Devil deceive you, dear Reader, and rob you of the greatest blessing in life, and your only hope of eternal happiness. www.wordsbythewayside.co.uk Registered Scottish charity SC041290

Getting into the Christmas Spirit There are few things more magical than the atmosphere of the traditional Christmas market, generally held across European cities in November and December. Every year more and more visitors are enjoying the unique festive charms of Christmas markets in German cities such as Cologne, Nuremberg and Dresden as well as in other European cities such as Vienna, Bruges and Prague. The twinkling scenes of festively decorated plazas with their enchanting market stalls and glittering Christmas trees set against the backdrop of beautiful historic buildings, let visitors relive the magic of yesteryear. The smell of hot mulled wine and roasted chestnuts fills the air. Nuremberg’s Christkindlmarkt is one of the biggest and most famous of the Christmas markets. Nearly 200 festive wooden stalls adorn the Old Town square from the beginning of Advent. Over 2 million visitors from all round the world enjoy the candlelit stalls in this beautiful Bavarian city. There are 21 Christmas markets in Vienna. The Advent Market is in front of the fabulous Schonbrunn Palace where visitors can buy traditional tree decorations, handmade gifts and a large selection of culinary delicacies. There is also the Christmas Village in Maria Theresien Platz with 50 stands with a wide range of goods and a choir is often to be heard.

Italy also boasts Christmas Markets - based in the delightful town of Arco, a short distance from Lake Garda's northern shore, and a gateway to the majestic Dolomite mountains beyond, this festive break includes visits to the wonderful Christmas Markets at Merano and Bolzano, and offers opportunities, on optional excursions, to visit incomparable Venice and Romeo and Juliet's Verona. If you are looking for an extra special treat for children or grandchildren what could be more exciting than a trip to Lapland. This really is a once in a lifetime experience – seeing Father Christmas in his secret hideaway deep in the pine trees. It is the stuff that dreams are made of and you can see it on the faces of young and old alike. A trip on a skidoo or in a sleigh pulled by reindeer – the excitement can all be fitted into a day trip – a long and busy day but it is possible! Alternatively a few days provides a more relaxed atmosphere giving you more time to try out the winter activities

In Prague the markets takes place in Wenceslas Square and in Old Town Square. Huge Christmas Trees sparkle, 150 wooden stalls many selling traditional crafts and the sound of Christmas concerts taking place all add to the magical atmosphere.
