Keeping Christmas Local
PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS
A Christmas Carol It was Charles Dickens who created the character Scrooge. Scrooge didn’t like Christmas. But Scrooge wasn’t just opposed to Christmas. He didn’t like anything. He lived to make money and he didn’t care who got hurt as long as it wasn’t him. We concentrate on Christmas with Scrooge because that was when he was given his second chance. His partner in business, Marley, who died seven years before, visits him on Christmas Eve, tied up in chains of ‘cashboxes, keys, padlocks, ledgers, deeds and heavy purses wrought in steel’. And Marley’s ghost tells Scrooge he is going to get a second chance. There will be a visit from 3 spirits over the next three nights, beginning at 1am that night. The first spirit appears – the Ghost of Christmas Past and takes Scrooge back to a Christmas scene from his own lonely childhood. Looking to the past helps to see what shaped us. But it doesn’t excuse present behaviour. The point is made over and over again that Scrooge forgot the blessings that
he had and just concentrated on the negatives. It is not what happens to us that counts – it is how we react to what happens. We have the choice between becoming better or bitter. Then the second spirit arrives – the Ghost of Christmas Present. This one takes Scrooge round what was happening in his present. It’s very easy to miss out on what is real in life if we concentrate on the wrong things. If we live for the things that we can see; if we live for what we can gain; if we believe that the one with the most toys at the end is the one who wins, then we lose out on so much. Then the Ghost of Christmas yet to come. This one showed him his own funeral. And it would be easy to assume that it was that that Dickens was trying to say: it matters what people say at your funeral. But that is not what he had in mind at all. It would be nice, I suppose, to have nice words said about you at your funeral. The ghost of Christmas yet to be doesn’t speak. And so Scrooge has no idea what he is being shown and he asks several times whether he is being shown what will take place, or what may take place. And that is the thing about the future for each of us: will it take place, or may it take place?

We don’t rely on a voiceless spirit to tell us what the future does hold, or may hold. We rely on the Holy Spirit to tell us what the written Word of God says about altering our destiny. The Bible has some definites and some changeables. We’ll look at the definites first: Hebrews 9: 27; Revelation 20:1213. These are what will take place. It is our destiny to die. We will face judgment for what we have done. And there is a final doom for those whose names are not written in the book of life. It doesn’t matter how many turkeys you buy on Christmas morning, you cannot change this part of the future. What you can change is your destiny. These are the changeables: Romans 8:1. If we commit our lives to Jesus, everything changes! Scrooge got a second chance. There is no reason you cannot have a second chance. All you have to do is ask Jesus to set you free. Ask him to forgive you for the past, to guide you through the present and to take over your future, so that what may be will be for you.

3. POLICE MATTERS Since the last meeting there have been 55 recorded crimes:Dishonesty crimes, including several house thefts, continue and the police urge property owners to secure their property and report any suspicious activity. 10 road traffic offences were detected by patrolling officers. The Boombox event held in the Longmore Hall went better from a policing point of view. The Keith`s Still Listening event highlighted an increase in anti social driving behavior and this will be dealt with over the coming months. It was mentioned by a member that there are cars at the bottom of Duff Street parking on the hatching. Police will try to have a word with the offenders. There was speed monitoring carried out on Land Street between Turner Street and the War Memorial from Monday, 27 August through to Monday, 3rd September. To Turner Street the speed was an average of 22.8mph. To War Memorial it was an average of 23.5mph. It was suggested that the monitoring be done further up Land Street as cars are probably going faster up the middle of the street. Rumours of dog napping were brought up at the meeting. Sergeant Black said there were no incidents of this kind happening in Keith. Two new constables were introduced to members who have started at Keith Police station.
4. MATTERS ARISING FROM PREVIOUS MINUTES The BMX track at Keith Grammar School was an addition to the building contract. It was agreed as KGS put in a request as they wished to enhance their PE curriculum. A range of young people will be able to enjoy it, including youngsters who are sometimes difficult to engage in activities. The grass cutting will be maintained by Moray Council. Keith Caravan Park: GC to speak to planning about the mess there is at the site and that the fence is delapitated - ACTION: GC will deal with matter Letter to be sent to Network Rail about the parking situation at Railway Station. – ACTION: GC will deal with matter
page 8 - December 2012
JM has forwarded areas including Taylor Court, Taylor Road and Drum Road regarding the request for areas that would benefit from not wanting cold callers contacting them. Lady on Regent Street that complained about the tree – a branch has now struck her window. KDRA – no one has spoken to a representative yet about the bushes etc. Keith Caravan sign still up between Balloch Road and Dunnyduff Road – ACTION: GC will deal with matter
5. CORRESPONDENCE JM read out various items of correspondence including – Forest Enterprise Scotland has launched a consultation which has to be completed by 12th October which CL and JM are to do. ACTION – JM and CL will deal with matter CL told councillors that a number of roads had been upgraded around the Balloch Forest. Trialing of new bollards is taking place at the Balloch. These bollards are to try and keep people on machines out (quads etc). GC passed on his thanks on behalf of himself and Stewart Cree for KCC attending the Keith’s Still Listening event. He said that the event was a success and that it may well be held annually. He asked for feedback and what improvements could be made to the event. It has hopefully provided a platform to show the good that youngsters do in the town. Request that Community Wardens get sent the minutes from meetings. Roadshow to be held in Keith on 9th October in the Longmore Hall. This is a drop-in session. JM asked if members can attend the event on 27th November. This will be a workshop to discuss how Moray Council is going to cut £30 million over the next four years. There will be no boundary changes in Heldon CC or the unestablished Finderene CC which Rafford is currently a part of. Keith and District Heritage group has published a book entitled, “Victorian Scenes” by William Robb, Solicitor of Keith. A couple of members will be attending this event in the library on 5th October. Vento Ludens (windfarm) wish to attend a meeting about community funding.
tel: 01309 690063
They will be invited to attend a meeting.
6. COMMUNITY COUNCILLORS UPDATE A. MRS JANE MARTIN – PLANNING AND LICENSING: No objections to various planning applications. B. MR CHARLES LAWSON – ROADS AND RIGHTS OF WAY: No incidents to report. Charlie and Sadie are to liaise with one another and Sadie will contact persons concerned to deal with matters that Charlie has arising. C. MRS MARGUERITE CRUICKSHANK – SIGNS AND STREET FURNITURE: The subject of poor signage was discussed by members. Signs were going to be replaced, but which ones do you take down and which do you leave? Shoppers have said that they have stumbled on Mid Street, accidentally, not knowing it was there. Some shop keepers have expressed that they are concerned that there is not adequate signage. Something to take people`s eye is needed. Members agreed it would be worthwhile arranging a meeting for traders to attend and put across ideas and suggestions they have for better signage pointing towards the shopping area in Keith. An extraordinary meeting is to be held in the Community Centre on 26th November at 7pm. Esther to put an article in the Banffshire Herald. MC will make leaflets inviting shop keepers to attend. Monies from CARS to fund signage may be available. ACTION: JM will deal with matter D. MR IAN CATTANACH – ENVIRONMENT Toilet seat missing from Gents - been for a month. Tree opposite Gleeson’s store still needs attending to. ACTION – GC will email Ken Kennedy It’s been reported, to a member, that the bus shelter is a disgrace. It needs to be cleaned on a regular basis. Visitors have reported that the smell was disgusting. This does not paint a good picture to visitors who travel by bus. ACTION – GC will deal with the matter Garden in Den reported as being in a terrible mess. Private properties that are untidy can be reported to the Enviromental Health.

A big congratulations to all the Moray winners in the Highlands and islands Food and Drink Awards, which recently took place. As the presenter of one of the awards, my role as Minister for Food & Drink, it was great to be able to speak to the winners and, indeed, the many exceptional companies and individuals that were in the running for an award.

the Barnardos shop in Elgin is becoming something of a fixture in the calendar in the autumn for ‘Make a Difference Day’, which encourages volunteering the length and breadth of the country. While i take on the role of an assistant in a charity shop for a short time, to highlight the importance of volunteering, i am very conscious of the efforts that are made by many volunteers, old and young, throughout the year in support of charities and other organisations. Whether that is fundraising, giving support and advice, getting involved in community projects or travelling abroad to help those suffering in other parts of the world, it is a great commitment that people make with no expectation of reward other than the personal satisfaction that making a difference can give.
our Food & Drink industry in Moray is very healthy, with firms expanding and providing more work in the local economy. the enthusiasm of those involved is fantastic and the food tastes great!

Dreaming of... ...Dubai
With its guaranteed sun, excellent hotels, golden beaches, fantastic shopping and only seven hours flying time direct from Glasgow, Dubai has become one of the most popular, all year round, holiday destinations. With dwindling oil reserves, the United Arab Emirate set out to replace its oil incomes with revenue from tourism, and it appears to have succeeded.
Burj Al Arab, Dubai
The oldest part of the City is centred around the Dubai Creek with its many souks and mosques, or you can take a visit to the Dubai Museum which is housed in Al Fahidi Fort. Built in 1787, it is the oldest existing building in Dubai. Dubai’s fascinating museum shows the history and development of Dubai to the present day. With approximately 68 shopping malls, Dubai is a shoppers paradise. The two biggest being the Dubai Mall and the Mall of the Emirates, which offers everything from high street and designer brands to ice rinks and cinemas, along with every type of cuisine imaginable and even the world’s largest suspended aquarium can be found in the Dubai Mall. Dubai has something to offer everyone in the family, including skiing in the desert at the fabulous Ski Dubai indoor arena. Kids will love Wild Wadi and Aqua adventures water parks. For the more adventurous, why not try the 4x4 desert safari or take the elevator to the observation deck on the 124th floor of the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building, where you will have a spectacular 360 degree view of the city, desert and ocean from 830 metres above. To enjoy the best beachfront facilities, beach lovers opt to stay in one of the many luxurious hotels on Jumeirah Beach, the most iconic hotel being the Burj Al Arab, the world’s only 7 star hotel. Dubai offers such a vast range of hotels choices and experiences, it would make an ideal destination for a two centre holiday, combining both beach and city life and direct flights from Scotland make it very easy to get to.

Better Motoring this Winter
Winter is the season requiring most care and preparation if you're to stay safe and avoid a breakdown. Here's general advice from the AA for safe and trouble-free driving through the Winter. Battery and electrics Lights, heaters and wipers put high demands on the car battery. If your driving is mainly dark rush-hour trips, the battery will give out eventually. Turn the heater fan down and switch the heated rear window off once windows are clear. Turn off lights, rear screen heater and wipers before trying to start the engine. Use the starter in short five-second bursts if the engine doesn't start quickly, leaving thirty seconds between attempts to allow the battery to recover. Antifreeze A continuous squealing noise as soon as the engine is started is a sign the water pump is frozen - it's the fan belt slipping on the pulley. Stop the engine immediately and allow it to thaw out. This may take several days unless the car can be moved to a heated garage. If the car begins to overheat a few miles from home it's likely that the radiator has frozen. Stop straight away to avoid serious damage and allow the radiator to thaw. You need a 50-50 mix of antifreeze and water in the cooling system for winter. This gives maximum protection down to -34° centigrade, and without it, severe engine damage can occur. Vision If your vision is obscured through dirt or snow you could face a hefty fine. Clear snow from the roof as well as from windows as this can fall onto the windscreen obscuring your view. Dazzle from a low winter sun can be a particular problem. Improve vision by making sure that the windscreen is clean both inside and out. Check windscreen wipers and replace if necessary. Make sure that wipers are switched off in the park position when leaving the car, when there's risk of freezing. Top up Windscreen washer fluid and treat with a suitable additive to reduce the chance of freezing.
Tyres The AA recommends at least 3mm of tread for winter motoring, and certainly no less than 2mm. Consider changing to winter or all season tyres – these have a higher silica content in the tread which prevents it hardening at lower temperatures, and therefore gives better grip in cold wet conditions. Before you go Get up at least 10 minutes early to give you time to prepare the car. Clear all windows using a scraper and de-icer. Use a cigarette lighter to warm a key for a frozen lock. Don't breathe on the lock, as the moisture will condense and freeze. Plan routes to favour major roads that are more likely to have been gritted. Put safety before punctuality when the bad weather closes in. Allow extra time for winter journeys. Driving in snow and ice Gentle manoeuvres are the key to safe driving - stopping distances are 10 times longer in ice and snow. Pull away in second gear, easing your foot off the clutch gently to avoid wheel-spin. Up hill - avoid having to stop part way up by waiting until it is clear of other cars or by leaving plenty of room to the car in front. Keep a constant speed, avoid having to change down on the hill. Down hill - reduce your speed before the hill, use a low gear and try to avoid using the brakes. Leave as much room as possible between you and the car in front. Apply brakes gently. Release the brakes and de-clutch if the car skids. Automatic transmission - in slippery, snowy conditions it's best to select '2', which limits the gear changes and also makes you less reliant on the brakes. If you get stuck, straighten the steering and clear the snow from the wheels. Put a sack or old rug in front of the driving wheels to give the tyres some grip.
Visibility Make sure that all bulbs are working and that lenses are clean. When roads are really mucky you might need to clean lights before every journey. Keep the number plates clean, too. Clear snow and ice from the lights - front and back. You must use headlights when visibility is seriously reduced.
