“We live in uncertain times” - I seem to have heard that refrain quite a lot recently but I do wonder whether there is a temptation to often fear the worst before it has actually happened. History does of course remind us that times do change and some regimes are worse than others so we can be forgiven for thinking the worst but fortunately this is most often not the norm! How we deal with the fear of the unknown affects us daily. A healthy degree of caution is always recommended but also is keeping a sense of perspective. A wise writer once said - “whosover will add a day to his life by worrying?” Probably right!

Merry Christmas! What does that greeting mean to you, and what does it stir up in us? To a lot of people, it is the time of year to get together with family, or friends or maybe a quiet time with your partner. To others, this time of year is a lonely time, spending it on their own, or possibly it is the first Christmas without a loved one. But this is the time of year where we can look to help others. It is often called the season of goodwill to all people, and we can find opportunities to show kindness to those who are less fortunate than ourselves. One of the annoyances at this time of year is the commercialism of it all, starting as early as November, and often earlier. This takes away from the value of the season, and by the time Christmas comes along, often we can be fed up of it, which is a great shame. There are many reasons to
celebrate this time of year, but the central theme is the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ. I like what the Bible says in Isaiah 9, “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulders, and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government, and of peace, there will be no end.” Often, the question is asked, ‘Where is the peace that God speaks about?’ The problem is that some people don’t want peace nor do they respect other people’s freedom, and choose to maim and kill. God gives us a choice, whether to live under His government and rule, or to choose to live without Him, with all the consequences that come with it. Above everything else this year, my sincere wish is for people to give themselves to the Lord, repenting of their sin, and

accepting Christ as their Lord and Saviour. The lyrics of one of John Lennon’s songs says, ‘All we are saying is give peace a chance.” Jesus said this in John 14:27a, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you.” What if that could be a reality, what if we choose to accept this wonderful life, free from aggravation? Well, it can be your reality right now, just ask Jesus to come into your heart. It is the simplest thing we can do, yet it is the most profound thing we can do. I hope and pray that this Christmas, and the years ahead will be filled with blessings. Merry Christmas to you. Pastor John Coppard Riverside Church, Buckie.

With the colder winter nights now upon us it’s time keep an eye out for our elderly and more vulnerable neighbours. With over 13000 households in Moray living in fuel poverty it is important that home owners explore all avenues to upgrade their home heating or insulation, with free advice being available from the Energy Saving Trust (http://www.energysavingtrust.org.uk/scotl and) or by calling 0808 808 2282, calls are free and they are available Monday to Friday from 8am to 8pm, and on Saturday from 9am to 5pm. The festive time is one best shared with family, friends and loved ones so let us take a moment to remember those who are away from home at this time, perhaps working offshore or protecting us serving in the armed forces or indeed those who are in hospital, along with the doctors and nurses caring for them.
Our health and wellbeing is something often taken for granted but if we take the time to look out for others we can all make the coming new year a happy and prosperous one. May I extend my warmest greetings for a Merry Christmas and wish everyone a very Happy New Year when it comes.
It’s nearly Christmas and so the first thing to say is all the very best of the season to you and yours! If you have time off at Christmas and New Year with family and friends then make the most of it and use the time well. If you are working during the holiday period, possibly even on Christmas Day, then a huge thank you whether you are in the emergency services, working in health or social care, hospitality workers serving up Christmas dinners, retail staff dealing with the huge rush of Christmas shopping and Boxing Day sales, farm workers making sure animals are fed and watered in all weathers or road workers out gritting. Whatever line of work you are in a huge thank you for keeping everything moving!
With Christmas fast approaching and there having been much hype around so-called Black Friday sales and big discounts from online retailers – often to the detriment of local shops – I wanted to take the opportunity to highlight my support for our local businesses. While I appreciate that household budgets are stretched more than ever at this time of year – we should do everything we can to shop at local businesses which are often at the heart of our communities. I hope shoppers throughout Moray can find time to support our local, independent businesses when carrying out their Christmas shopping this year. I know that local spending will be very much appreciated by local retailers and their staff. I would like to wish all readers a very merry Christmas and a happy, prosperous new year. 2017 is another year that holds a lot in store and I hope that whatever you have planned for the coming year works out well for you.

Savoury Feta Cheese Muffin Muffins tick all the boxes—they’re loved by kids and adults alike, they can be sweet or savoury but always provide a satisfying snack, they come in handy individual portions, and they provide a truly endless variety of recipe possibilities. They’re simple to make, and a great way to experiment with new flavour combinations. This month’s recipe is supplied by The Peppermill Restaurant in Forres. Ingredients: (makes 12) 4 cups plain flour 1 cup wholemeal flour 4tsp baking powder 1tsp bicarb. soda 350ml oil 350ml yoghurt 5 eggs splash of milk 200g feta cheese 1 bag of spinach, cooked Method line a 12 hole muffin tray with muffin cases, or grease well. preheat the oven to 180 degrees. Sieve the flours, baking powder and bicarb. together in a mixing bowl, and add the spinach and feta and coat in the flour mixture. Mix the oil, eggs, yoghurt and milk together and add 3/4 to the flour mixture, adding more if needed. specks of flour should remain in the mixture and it should not be overmixed. divide the muffin mixture into the prepared muffin tray (fill the cases to the top) and bake until well risen and firm to touch.

UK FRANCHISE OF THE YEAR RUNNER UP
2013
Lichen – fungus on the lawn explained ! I’ve mentioned this before. One of the joys of our wonderful environment up here is the clean air, and one of the organisms which thrives locally (but rarely in Glasgow) is dog lichen. There are hundreds of species here, growing on trees, rocks and on the grass ! It is particularly at home on ground which has become compacted and is low on nutrients. It is one of the most common questions we get from baffled homeowners, and many have found that the garden centre people aren’t sure how to deal with it. We shift it by aerating the ground with a big hollow-core tining machine which removes thousands of cores from
grass. As with all things in nature, it’s about competition. There are no chemical products which remove lichen. Golf courses do this all the time, and so do we. Aerating the ground over winter should be part of routine lawncare in any case. The freeze/thaw, freeze/thaw weather we get compacts most ground round here which prevents tender new plant roots spreading, even if the grass has had a spring feed. The ground is too solid.
For more information about our annual lawncare plans from just £11.25 per mth, plus useful downloads and photos, go to www.greenthumb.co.uk. Although GreenThumb is a multi-award winning national franchise, and is the runaway leader in the sector with half a million customers, we are the family-run local franchise covering the wider Moray Firth area. Contact Alastair or Fiona for a FREE LAWN ANALYSIS on 01667 460012, or email us at: the ground allowing air to circulate. A regular feeding programme for the lawn strengthens the grass and this tips the balance of conditions back in favour of the

Words by the Wayside "And the Lord Jesus said unto another, ‘Follow me’, But he said, ‘Lord, suffer me first…’ " (Luke 9:59)
Christian, as followers of our Lord Jesus Christ, we should not be saying to Him "suffer me first" but "Lord, what will thou have me to do?" Accept the calling, don't kick against the pricks of your conscience, embrace God and His will and His ways, and the joy of the Lord will be your strength. Christian, surrender your will, be nothing, that God might be all. www.wordsbythewayside.co.uk Registered Scottish charity SC041290

Making Whole Family Recovery Possible Arrows is a holistic service for individuals affected by alcohol and drugs. We support both Adults experiencing drug and alcohol problems, and children and families affected by a loved one’s substance use. The range of supports available in Arrows are both individual and group centred and can be used as part of a whole family approach to recovery or one to one support personally tailored and unique to each family’s circumstances.
program. Arrows work to improve coping strategies and parenting approaches through supporting effective communication, providing whole family activities, play and positive experiences.
As Recovery is personal the confidential nature of treatment and support with Arrows is upmost and we support individuals to understand the boundaries of sharing information, as well as making informed choices when involving loved ones within our whole family approach.
Friends, family or others connected to an individual may recognise their drug or alcohol issue first. Being in a close relationship with someone struggling with an addiction can be frustrating, painful and sometimes a lonely journey.
Worried about your substance use and its impact on your family and relationships? Individuals experiencing drug and alcohol issues may feel isolated from loved ones, unable to seek support from those closest to them or pressurised into establishing positive changes which can lead to deterioration within relationships, and creating further challenges for recovery. Arrows can support you to involve loved ones in your recovery at a pace and level that suits you. We can guide you to have conversations with loved ones inviting their involvement within your recovery plan. Many of our activities, groups and events are family inclusive; we provide focused support through couples and family counselling. Arrows work with parents experiencing substance issues to support their role as a parent within their recovery treatment
Arrows can support parents to recognise the needs of their children throughout their recovery journey, how to support them through the changes involved and in hearing their views within the family’s support.
Worried about a loved one and their substance use?
We can work with you using a range of CBT based tools, helping you cope and support your loved one. Many of these skills are valuable for the family even if your loved one does not enter treatment or has already begun the treatment process. Arrows can support friends and family to understand and discuss problematic substance use with their loved one to help prevent situations escalating.
Linking with Carers Support Family members often don’t recognise themselves as unpaid carers even though they are entitled to the carer supports available. Arrows and Quarriers Carers Support Service (Moray) can work with you on a joint register to ensure access to the training, short breaks and group supports available through their Service.

New website a boost The new Spotlight website is now up and running and it is aleady proving a great source of information and fellowship for the Moray and Highland community. Our aim is to bring the great knowledge and support we gather from the public for our magazines to a webbased forum that can be accessed any time and from anywhere Most of the website is free to use and you don’t have to register. If you do want to register, it is free and will provide you with a localised search function, as well as the ability to post your own information! Clubs and Societies have their own page and people can register and claim their own listing or post a new one for free. Then it will go into our next magazine issue automatically. We have this same resource for
Trades, Places to Eat and people wanting to post Events and Articles. Check today to see if your listing is already online. There are many types of Articles which we encourage the public to submit for publication to the website. Subjects

this would have cost us over £900 in our 65mpgSkoda, but has instead it has cost us about £350 in electricity, a saving of over 60%! We are alsoexpecting to make big savings in maintenance because EVs have about 18 moving parts, whereas a typical diesel or petrol car has over 2000. In terms of savings, we think it will pay for itself within 8 years. The economics of owning an EV really starting to add up, and I hope that continuing improvements will help to make this a “No brainer” for most of us. So come on Forres, lets not get left behind, start embracing the electric revolution and save yourself a fortune, as well as the planet! There is a great deal of information on the web, but I would definitely recommend the ‘FullyCharged’ YouTube channel is one of the best places to catch up on all the latest electric cartechnology.
