I had been hearing lots of “chatter” about Haikus, so I thought that I would check it out for myself. First - a definition: haiku [( heye -kooh)]

A form of Japanese poetry. A haiku expresses a single feeling or impression and contains three unrhymed lines of five, seven and five syllables respectively. Here’s one called February:

Pastoral Le er & Church Meetings I am writing this letter mid packing to move from Aberlour Parish Church to Cults Parish Church in Aberdeen. So, I guess this will be my last pastoral letter for Spotlight. I have enjoyed being able to share some of my thoughts with you over the last few years. During my last services at Aberlour and Craigellachie the Bible reading was John 1:35-51 – the story of Jesus and his first disciples as told by John. A phrase that appears a couple of times in the reading is ‘Come and see.’ I guess that that pretty much sums up Jesus’ ministry. Wherever he goes he invites people to come and see. Come and see a new way of living, come and see what God can do in your life, come and see what you can do for God, come and see… This, I think, is the invitation the

church should use to those in its community. Come and see who we are; come and see what we do; come and see who it is we worship; come and see what Jesus may have to offer you; come and see. Jesus makes that invitation throughout his ministry. And the invitation is made quite indiscriminately. He excludes no one from the invitation to come and see. And that is what the church should be doing. But the task is there for the individual too. As we are the ones who can issue the invitation. Not just inviting people along to church or to church events. But also by being inviting in the way we live our lives. If we say that knowing and loving Jesus Christ makes a difference in our lives, then we should show this. Our words, our actions or in converse our lack of words and lack of actions can and do say so

much about who we are. There is no worse turn off than a hypocrite. Saying one thing and doing another is not the way to be inviting. As I head off to begin a new ministry, I hope that, apart from the obvious badge of office that is my clerical collar, that my life, my words, my actions have been and will continue to honour Jesus and that I will continue to invite people to come and see. How about we all try to do the same? Blessings

Reader, God so loved you, that He 16:00 offered up on Calvary’s Cross His only begotten Son Jesus Christ, that if you would believe on Him, you should not perish. For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn you, but that you through Him might be saved. Refuse no longer God’s offering for your sins. Jesus Christ can make you whole, He is The Gift of God.

Parliament Blog & Tide Times As the days start to get a bit longer, spring is hopefully just around the corner and we all feel a sense of optimism and the hope of better weather ahead. For farmers, the approach of a new season brings with it an extra workload as they are extremely busy with livestock, preparing for lambing and calving and getting the fields ready. As someone from a farming background, I know all too well how important the change of seasons is to the industry and I will continue to support farmers and campaign for a good deal post Brexit. Politicians of all parties have had constructive meetings with the industry and it’s important that this dialogue continues as we move forward. The winter months can be some of the longest and most difficult for farmers and their livestock, but the joy of seeing them turn-out in the spring makes up for that. When I worked on local dairy farms, even in February I was yearning for the day that the gates were opened and the cattle could get out of the sheds and start skipping through the grass. Not too much longer to wait!

The modern world’s reliance on the internet has become so important that a fast broadband connection is now regarded as the fourth utility along with water, gas and electricity. All politicians will be judged on this issue and even more so now that the UK Government will ensure that homes and businesses have a legal right to high-speed broadband by 2020. That strengthens consumer rights and that is a step in the right direction. The Scottish Government have committed £600 million towards ensuring every home and business has secured superfast broadband by 2021. A bold ambition and one that I welcome. However, only time will tell if £600m is enough. By 2021 there will be no excuses and the Scottish Government must deliver.

There is no bigger reminder of Moray’s incredible history, culture and tradition, than the annual Burning of the Clavie in Burghead, marking the New Year. The unique fire festival held on the 11 January, an ancient tradition that sees a burning barrel of staves carried around the village, is always a spectacular event. It’s incredible to think that once the clavie reaches its final destination on Doorie Hill that it can be seen from as far as Caithness and Sutherland. When I was first sworn into Parliament as Moray’s MSP in 2006, I was proud to carry a piece of the Clavie with me to highlight Moray’s unique traditions and culture. Possession of a piece of the Clavie is said to bring good luck for the year ahead. This is my first Spotlight blog since the Clavie, and so I’d like to take this opportunity to wish everyone in Burghead and across Moray a very happy 2018.

Complete Lawn Renovation – a project this year ? Many of you will, in your darkest moments, consider giving up on your lawn… too far gone ….. wouldn’t know where to start ….. best to get it dug up and put down a new lawn ! Replacing a lawn can be very expensive, however, whether you plan to replace it with a new lawn or even slabs or gravel. Consider this, a worn-out lawn can actually be renovated in situ at a fraction of the cost of removing and replacing the whole thing. I have included here a Before and After picture taken just a few weeks apart. I suggest there are 4 stages in the process, and you could either try this yourself, probably with some hired machines, or get some help (probably best as you have to live with the results for years to come).

1.

Hollow tine Aeration removes thousands of cores, reducing compaction and allowing air to move in the root zone, encouraging microbial activity and root development.

2. Severe Scarification removes as much thatch as possible, allowing the seed to find the soil surface which always aids germination. Once the thatch has been removed it has to be cleaned off the surface by either raking or sweeping, using a leaf sweeper.

BEFORE

3.

Seeding should be applied at a rate of 20-25gms per m². The seed, being on the soil surface, puts it in direct contact with the material that will help it germinate; it is, however, open to the elements and can be disrupted by heavy winds and birds’ feasting.

4.

Top Dressing covers the seed. Many think top dressing should be a sandy soil mix. We actually use a lawn compost, manufactured from recycled green waste and, therefore, environmentally friendly. It contains nutrient to assist existing grass and promote good germination from the seed and aids good microbial activity. This is applied at 2kg per m². All that’s required now is regular watering until the seed germinates (regular rainfall isn’t usually a problem in these parts). The best time to tackle this is June-Sept in Scotland, and that means starting planning now for your new lawn this summer. At around £2 per m2 to renovate, compared with around £12 per m2 to replace, it really is worth considering.

Vegan Caramel Apple Walnut Cake This issue we see the return of the popular Vegan Caramel Apple Walnut Cake. You know the saying “an apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Well, it is true that apples are healthy for us. Apples also make a tasty addition to baked goods like cakes, they’re simple, easy and always taste great. Recipe is supplied by The Peppermill Restaurant in Forres.

Ingredients: 6 tbsp brown sugar 4 cooking apples, peeled and sliced 3 cups plain flour 3 tsp ginger 225g vegan marg 1 1/2 cups brown sugar

2 tbsp golden syrup 1 1/2 tsp bicarbonate of soda 1 1/3 cup soya milk 1 1/2 tbsp lemon juice 2 grated apples 1 cup walnuts

Method: 1. Sprinkle the sugar in the base of a large heavy-based frying pan suitable for the

oven, arrange apples on top of the sugar.

2. Sift the flour and ginger together then rub in the margarine and sugar. 3. Dissolve the bicarbonate of soda in the soya milk. 4. Mix all the remaining ingredients with the flour mixture and the soy mixture and tip into the tin and bake in an oven preheated to 180 degrees for approximately 40-45mins or until a skewer comes out clean.

Enjoy!

(1st Samuel 2:3)

Reader, what have you done with Jesus which is called Christ? Do you say, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing? And yet do you not know if you reject the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour, you are wretched, and miserable and poor and blind and naked. It is appointed unto you once to die and after this your judgment: what will you do with Jesus?

The Garden TOM ANGEL IS A GARDEN DESIGNER AND CHARTERED HORTICULTURIST BASED IN AVIEMORE. TOM PROVIDES GARDEN DESIGN AND HORTICULTURAL SERVICES AS

THE MOUNTAIN GARDENER, HAVING PREVIOUSLY RUN HIS OWN COMMERCIAL GARDENING BUSINESS FOR TWELVE YEARS.

TOM ALSO BLOGS AS THE MOUNTAIN GARDENER. February can feel like the harshest of winter months, and we have certainly already received enough cold weather in January, but spring is around the corner now and there are a number of jobs that can be done now to help keep on top of the garden before the spring growth commences. One of the trickier jobs that can be managed now is pruning Wisteria, but you needn’t be too scared of this. Pruning involves cutting back summer side-shoots to 2 or 3 buds. I’m going to elaborate on this in my blog, where I will give some more detailed instructions for this. Here are some other tasks that could or should be done in the garden in February:

DO prune summer-flowering Clematis before they start growing actively. DO renovate Beech hedges that need more robust pruning. DO plant bare root shrubs and trees. DO prune Winter Jasmine after it has flowered. DO take down any tired looking dead seed-heads that you have left over the winter. DO cut back deciduous grasses before fresh growth begins. DO prune/trim winter-flowering shrubs such as Mahonia japonica and Viburnum tinus after they have flowered. DO dead-head winter bedding as it can encourage some species to flower again. DO prune apple and pear trees.

DON’T forget to make sure all your machines are all serviced ahead of the spring. DON’T work heavy soils that are wet, wait till they have dried out. DON’T be tempted to start sowing lots of seeds in the greenhouse, they may well just become weak and spindly due to lack of light. DON’T forget to keep putting bird food out, and if possible keeping some water available for birds to drink from and bathe in. DON’T forget to use any slightly warmer days to start tackling moss build-up on hard surfaces. March is a busy month in the garden, with fair amounts of pruning to do, so get all and any tidying done that you can in February. I’ll be back next month, and in the meantime I’ll be getting on with all these jobs in my own garden!

Caring for carers 17% of the adult population in Scotland has a caring role, saving our economy ÂŁ10.3 billion a year – the equivalent of a second NHS. You might be one of the almost 8000 people in Moray providing unpaid care to a family member or friend because of their physical or mental ill health, disability, frailty or substance use. You could be part-time or all the time; any age, gender, nationality or profession. You may have chosen to provide care, or found yourself thrust into the role unexpectedly, either suddenly or over a period of time. You may often wonder how you ended up where you are! Quarriers Carer Support Service (Moray) can help you untangle the experience of being a carer to make sure you have the right knowledge, information and help to manage. Moray’s Carers Strategy 2017-20, Carry on Caring, sets out six key aims for carers: A life of your own Balancing your caring role with having a life of your own can sometimes feel impossible. We can help you make opportunities for ‘you’ time, whether on your own, or with friends/family. Centralised information Like us at www.facebook.com/ quarrierscarersupportmoray and keep in touch with other carers across Moray. Our quarterly newsletter is mailed/emailed to every carer registered with us, and can be found in a range of public places. Sign up for your copy today.

Being able to continue as a carer The Moray Carer Aware Card offers peace of mind that should something unexpected prevent you being with the person you care for, you have LGHQWLijHG VRPHRQH ZKR FDQ VWHS LQ and their details are readily available. Get your Carer Aware Card from us. Respite/short breaks Regular short breaks from caring help you re-charge your batteries. Short breaks can be anything from time with your favourite magazine or TV programme, enjoying a hobby or activity, to having a night away. We can help you plan your break, and may also be able to help with funding to make it possible. Identifying and recognising carers Often, becoming a carer is a gradual process, and comes after a life shared together. Recognising you’ve become a carer, rather than the son/daughter, husband/wife or other pre-existing UHODWLRQVKLS FDQ EH GLIijFXOW 2WKHU people don’t always see the change either. We’re working with health and care professionals, and the wider community, to help identify carers as early as possible, to help ensure access to the right information and support exactly when you need it, and long before it feels too late. Carer friendly communities Maintaining or resuming involvement in local activities helps keep you connected and reduces isolation. We’re keen to promote organisations, supports and events across Moray to help make sure you have as many opportunities as possible to do this. Quarriers Carer Support Service (Moray) is here for you.
