The Editor

It’s difficult to ignore all the violence that is going on just now and even more difficult to reconcile that with a “civilised society”. Maybe we can try and focus on the hope that these are just small minorities of people and more often than not their actions do not fairly reflect the wider belief systems of the religions that they purport to represent. We must hope and pray that these people eventually come to their senses.

PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS "And a sword will pierce your own soul too." (Luke 2:35) NRSV On 2nd February each year, the Christian Church celebrates The Presentation of Christ in the Temple – you can read the story in St Luke's Gospel 2:22-38. This event brings the nativity narrative to a close with Jesus being taken back to Nazareth to grow up under his parent's authority and presents a number of themes of great importance. At face value it tells the story of Mary and Joseph going up to the Temple to fulfil the Jewish Law’s requirements for the purification of a woman after childbirth – you will find the rules in Leviticus, chapter 12. On a deeper level, the Presentation of Christ in the Temple continues the theme of the Epiphany (when the wise men representing the Gentiles came bearing gifts to the infant Jesus), with Simeon both proclaiming the significance of Jesus for the Gentiles and prophesying the cross. Simeon realised that his life's work was complete; he had held his Saviour in his arms and said: "Master, now you are dismissing your servant

in peace, according to your word: for my eyes have seen your salvation which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for the glory of your people Israel." (Luke 2: 29-32 NRSV) For the Church, it marks the end of the period in the year, staring in Advent, in which we celebrate the coming of God in human form in the person of Jesus Christ. Joy is the dominant theme in the story. A baby is born. The Lord has come to his temple. And yet, there will be opposition and pain before God's will is finally done. Mary is warned of sorrow to come, of “a sword which will pierce her soul” (Luke 2:35 NRSV). The arrival of God's salvation, witnessed and celebrated here, is not the end. All is not going to be sweetness and light. In our Christian life, as in our private lives, there will be sorrow amidst the joy. Our relationship with God needs to be realistic. If we turn to Christ expecting instant cures, a straight path, sweetness and light, what

happens when we find that we still have doubts, or that life's problems have not all gone away? We either suspect that we have failed and are not 'good Christians', or that God has let us down. Neither is true. In this life we are bidden to take up our cross and follow the one who was tested as we are. May we do so gladly, looking ahead to that time when God's salvation is complete. In taking up our cross, we are called to present our selves, our souls and our bodies to be living sacrifices. How sacrificially do we live our lives? Christians can be in as much danger as people of other religions of stressing what is trivial whilst neglecting what is important. Our faith is a living faith which should express itself in acts of love.

Christian, you are “alive unto God, through Jesus Christ our Lord. He is “your Father and “your God. Feelings may deceive you, but faith never can. Have faith in God, and doubt not, He has blessed us according to the fullness of His value for Christ, and in Him, “He is well pleased. While I have been out and about shopping recently I have been taken by the number of independent shops that have recently opened around Moray. It is a good sign that there is some recovery in our High Streets but it is also really pleasing to see that it is not just the same High Street names. Having that mix of shopping is critical for our local shopping streets to create a uniqueness and attract more visitors and shoppers. Good luck to the new business start-ups and I would encourage people to support them and ‘shop local’!

2015 is Scotland’s Year of Food & Drink, which is particularly important when it comes to promoting Moray, given what is right here on our doorstep in terms of top quality products, from some of the best beef herds to, luxury food production, our plethora of distilleries and our growing craft brewers. I am very much looking forward to doing as much as I can to support the sector in the coming year both as local MSP and as Minister for Food & Drink in the Scottish Government.

ELGIN City Football Club welcomes Jim Weir

We would like to welcome Jim Weir as first team manager of Elgin City FC. Jim

made his first appearance as manager on the 2nd December 2014 and having previously played in the senior Scottish leagues for Hamilton Academical, Hearts and St. Johnstone. Since retiring as a player, he has worked as manager of Montrose, Arbroath and latterly - Brechin City. We wish him all good fortune at Elgin City and hope he will find a warm welcome in Moray. Up the Black and Whites! ELGIN City Football Club was formed on August 10, 1893, when Elgin Rovers and Vale of Lossie amalgamated to form the new club and they played their first competitive match on October 7 of that year. Borough Briggs is the name of their the home ground and Elgin City F.C. currently play in the Scottish League Two. Borough Briggs opened on 20 August 1921 when it replaced Cooper Park as Elgin's home ground and has a capacity of 4,520; (478 seated). All 478 seats in the main stand were formerly fixed at Newcastle United's St James' Park ground! When Elgin City were elected to the Scottish Football League in 2000 they obtained 500 seats from the Geordie club when it was revamping the seated areas in its main (Milburn) stand.
