PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS “When the Magi had heard King Herod, they went on their way; and lo, the star which they had seen in the East went before them, till it came to rest over the place where the child was.” (Matthew 2:9) My husband, Rev. Ranald, teased his young great-nephew that, this past Christmas, he had plugged “Auntie Kay” into the wall socket. As Ben’s eyes widened, Ranald continued, “It was such a joy to see Auntie Kay’s face light up!” As I blew my fuse, he received a dark look from me! The fact is that we are living in an age where our lives are shaped more and more by technology. Technology has transformed our lives and made our lives more comfortable. Yes, it has transformed our physical lives, but has it transformed our spiritual lives? Despite, or perhaps even because of, all the technology we have today, the fact is that the people who lived thousands of years ago were more in tune with God and His creation than we are today. They knew how to live in harmony with the revolving seasons and configurations of the stars. Just imagine how excited those Magi must have been when, after many years of studying the stars and charting their paths, suddenly God showed them a star that was different, a star that shone more brightly than any other. It was un-

like the comets and planets that they knew so well. And so they left everything and everyone behind and set out on a journey following the star that spoke of a great king. It was a two year journey before they reached their destination and the Star-child, Jesus. After paying homage to Him, they returned home changed men, for the Son had risen in their hearts. One of the Christmas presents Ranald received this year was a pair of “Holy Socks” on which are the three camels of the Magi travelling towards the bright star in the sky. The middle camel looks to have two black eyes. However, a close inspection of the camel shows that it is actually wearing designer sunspecs to shield his eyes from the brightness of the star. The point I’d like to make is that this middle camel could have lowered its eyes and followed the camel in front of it, albeit, living in its shadow. Instead, it found a way to keep on following the star. And that is why we have to be like that middle camel, lifting our heads up out of earthly life by looking heavenly towards the light of the world – that light which transforms our lives.

So, in this new year of 2013, let us not abandon the Christ Child in Bethlehem but rather, like that middle camel on Ranald’s socks, let us raise our heads above the technology of this world to see our Designer, the one true God, whose Son will shine brightly in our lives and transform them as we journey with him. “Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you....Lift up your eyes and look around, and see!” (Isaiah 60:1, 4)

at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and the excellent care of our local doctors and nurses. This past Christmas, we asked any members of our congregation who intended giving us a Christmas present to make a donation instead for necessary equipment at the Maxillofacial Unit, vital equipment that will transform the lives of patients and their families by giving them the gift of another Christmas together. Our congregation would agree that it is a tremendous privilege to journey with others in their suffering. In doing so, by the grace of God, we follow in the footsteps of the magi and look up to the Light of the world so that others also raise their eyes above the glitter and sparkle of the materialism of the western world.

ExTrACTS FrOM THE MinuTES OF THE MEETinG OF 3rD nOvEMBEr 2012 OF KEiTH COMMuniTy COunCiL POLICE MATTERS Since the last meeting there have been 49 recorded crimes: Dishonesty crimes, including several house thefts, metal thefts and the theft of a car. The police urge property owners to secure their property and report any suspicious activity. Householders are urged to leave lights on in their property if they are going out to look like someone is in the house. Several road traffic offences were detected by patrolling officers which included dangerous driving, drug and drink driving and the use of mobile phones whilst driving. Constable Nick Boyd will be returning to Keith and a full time clerical officer is in post and working office hours at Keith station. Several parking tickets have been issued to vehicles parking illegally in response to issues raised at last months meeting.

MATTERS ARISING FROM PREVIOUS MINUTES Footpath at Viewfield – not been dealt with yet. ACTION – GC will deal with matter. Meeting for more signage in Keith on Monday 26th November – leaflets to go out to businesses inviting them to the meeting in the Community Centre at 7pm. Article also to go in Banffshire Herald about this meeting. Names were given to JM who wished to attend the budget workshop in the Longmore Hall on 27th November. As many people as possible were urged to go to the meeting. Finger point sign to the Caravan Park to be taken down. An order to the owner of the Caravan Park may be issued as it is in a deplorable state. Bus shelter in Reidhaven Square to be cleaned on a regular basis. Tree in the Square also being attended to. The lorry park is being looked into to be developed where there will be a shower block and toilets installed. House next to Caravan Park is in need of a tidy up – it is owned by the Army. Path near a property in Chapel Street – the path needs to be made into a pavement as it is too narrow for prams, wheelchairs, etc. A request for a lollipop person at St Thomas school was suggested as there is a lot of traffic there at peak school times.

This could be a matter to bring up at the consultation or to the Chief Executive of Moray Council. Car owners are also being inconsiderate and parking on places that are unsuitable i.e. near junctions. GC and SC met with BEAR and Moray Council. Nothing will be done with the Banff Road/Church Road junction. There will be the possibility of an access path through the former Green school. If this property was sold, provision of the path would have to stay. The Wee Brig at Regent Court area – CL said he could repair it although SC dealing with it. Newmill Road hydrant has been repaired. There are 19 hydrants marked to be repaired.

COMMUNITY COUNCILLORS UPDATE A. Mrs Jane Martin: Planning and Licensing No objections to various planning applications B. Mr Charles Lawson: Roads and rights of way CL said that the road sweeper is not going around enough, as there is an awful lot of leaves lying on the streets that need to be cleared away and are blocking the drains. A drain on Regent Street is dirling. It should be seen to within 48 hours if in a residential area after being reported. Other areas it should be dealt within 7 days. Street lights – the lights that have not been working are being fixed. A resident has concerns about trees that are being planted on the Bridal path to Newmill. There won’t be trees planted on the path – the path is being left. C. Mrs Marguerite Cruickshank: Signs and street furniture MC is working on Keith’s case to become one of Scotland’s ‘Scots Touns’. She brought along the draft front cover to enquire if members considered it suitable. SC suggested that something more eye – catching be produced / added along the bottom edge – perhaps a photograph or silhouette style banner could be created from a photograph of Keith, showing the immediately recognisable outlines of the Institute and Chapel. EXTERNAL GROUP UPDATES A. KSRP MC attended the last meeting. There have been two applications for funding. B. FKAG JM read out a report on what FKAG have been doing recently and are going to do in the future. A music event will be organised in Fife Keith square next year on 12th May. They have adopted the Keith Town Station and have made a difference to the area. A poppy appeal was being done by some members at Tesco. C. FKAG members are going to help again to decorate the trees on Saturday. Stalls are filling up for the Extravaganza on 1st December 2012 in the Longmore Hall from 1.30pm-4pm. Entertainment has been arranged with Silver Band, Jessiman Dancers, Strathspey Fiddlers and Merry Melodies. The extra lights, which were due to go up on Moss Street, will not go up this year as BEAR were to be changing parts of the lampposts. They will go up next year. Letters going out to traders and business asking for donations this week and posters to go out as well for the extravaganza.

First of all, as we finish 2012, a note of thanks to everyone who has to work over the festive period. Whether that has been the very busy mail workers in the run up to Christmas, the retail and service sector workers, the roads workers out in all weathers and the medical and emergency services workers that work throughout the holiday time. Now comes the challenge of losing some of the pounds gained from good (or possibly bad) food, including the chocolate coins and the usual ‘more exercise’ theme is featuring in the New Year’s resolutions. I think I have found a better balance in 2012 between working, relaxing and staying comparatively healthy but there’s always room for improvement!

A Happy New Year for 2013! It’s been a busy old year in the Lochhead household, with a house move focusing the mind for a good part of it. We are well settled in now, the housewarming has been had with friends old and new and we have had a great first Christmas in the house with the children keeping us on our toes! 2013 will undoubtedly be another challenging year but there is a lot to look forward to in rising to that challenge. First things first though, and getting the Christmas Tree, cards and wrapping paper off to be recycled.

...a skiing holiday With the first of the snow arriving many will be turning their attention to their winter break skiing or snowboarding. Apres-ski in Switzerland

More resorts are being made easily accessible from Scotland with direct flights to France, Austria, Switzerland and Bulgaria. One stop connections flights to Japan, America and Canada are available. For those trying the sport for the first time or looking for value for money head to Bulgaria - a lift pass for the week costs less than £100. Nursery slopes in Pamporovo are perfect for improving skills. Unfortunately the limited kilometres of slopes here make it unsuitable for the more experienced. They should choose to stay in the resort of Bansko where there is a choice of more challenging slopes. Not got time for a full week away? Don't worry, many resorts and hotels will offer short breaks either mid week or over a weekend. To make the most of your time away choose a resort with a short transfer. Les Gets in the Portes du Soleil area is less than one hour from Geneva. With direct flights from Glasgow or Edinburgh you could be on the slopes by lunchtime. From Les Gets you can also go over the border to Switzerland. If you do have more time to spare why not combine the snow with beach or city! Adding a second centre to your holiday is easy and relatively inexpensive to do. Combine America’s number one city, New York with powder in Aspen or the golden sands or the Caribbean with Whistler in Canada. All Itineraries can be tailor made to suit your individual needs. For something different why not try up and coming Japan. With huge snowfall and amazing scenery it’s perfect for your next trip. The ski season runs from mid November to mid April but the best conditions are found in January and February. Niseko is the largest ski resort in western Hokkaido - best known for powder - on average 50 feet of snowfall per season! Again, many people choose to add a second centre. Its easy to include the Japanese cities of Tokyo, Kyoto or Osaka Wherever you choose to ski it is imperative you have the right insurance in place for you and your family. The correct policy can provide cover from everything from no snow coverage to damaged or stolen equipment. All policies are different so check you have adequate cover before hitting the slopes. Enjoy your ski season!

Specially for you! I may never meet you personally, but there is something I want to tell you. It is of such importance that I would be unkind if I didn’t let you know: yet it is so simple that you can read it in a few minutes. It is so vital that it may change your entire future: yet it is available to you at no cost whatever. It is a message that you may not like: yet you will never be able to forget it. And whether you believe it or not, it will affect you in life and in death. First of all let me emphasise that this message is absolutely true, because it is God who said it. When God makes a statement you can afford to accept it, because He cannot lie. When God makes a promise, you can rest upon it, because His promises can never fail. God will not make you believe this message – that is your choice – but He will hold you responsible for having heard it. Then let me tell you that this is a personal message to you. You cannot escape it. It brings you to the place of decision. You must either accept it or reject it. You must either say “I will” or “I will not”. You cannot be neutral. Here, then, is the message. It is an exact quotation from God’s Word, the Holy Bible:

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. (John3:16) Now, did you ever hear such wonderful words as these before? Are they not amazing? Just think for a moment what they say! They reveal three marvellous and thrilling facts.

First, “GOD SO LOVED THE WORLD!” since you are in the world, it means that He loved you. If that does not startle you, remember that when God loved you, He loved a sinner, because that is what you are. The bible says that you are a sinner (Romans 3:23), and if you are honest you will agree. Now, although God loves you. He hates your sin. Sins will keep you out of Heaven, because God is holy and He must punish sin. Thus a holy God must find a holy way of saving sinners. Otherwise the sinner must pay for his sins, and that would mean spending eternity in Hell. The second great fact is this: “HE GAVE HIS ONLY BEGOTTEN SON”. The first statement tells you that God loved you. This statement tells you how much He loved you. He loved you so much He gave His only begotten Son! Do you know what that means? It means that the Lord Jesus Christ suffered on the cross of Calvary so that you might be saved. He shed His blood so that your sins might be put away. He died for you so that you might live in Heaven forever. You see – someone must pay the penalty for sin, either you or a sinless substitute. God gave His Son so that He could be your sinless substitute. And now for the third tremendous fact: “WHOSOEVER BELIEVETH IN HIM SHOULD NOT PERISH BUT HAVE EVERLASTING LIFE”. What could be more wonderful? Think of it! God gives eternal life to those who believe in Christ. The Saviour has finished the work. He has died, has risen from the grave and gone back into Heaven. Now your part is to believe in Him. This simply means that you should confess that you are a sinner, realise that Christ is willing and able to meet your need, and then receive Him as your Lord and Saviour. This is the message which I had to tell you. Now you must make a decision. Will you accept Him or reject Him? Will you believe on Him or will you refuse Him? Will you bow humbly before Him or will you turn away in pride? I may never meet you upon earth, but I hope I will meet you in Heaven. If you too will accept the sinner’s Saviour, then you will be surely saved. The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into His hand. He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him. (John 3:35,36)
