PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS Keep on Going! Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. Hebrews 12: 1-3 The scene here reminds me of tired athletes wondering if they can actually finish their event. They decide to stick at it. For one thing, a crowd of very distinguished people is cheering them on. For another thing, they realise that their efforts have been made harder by hanging on to some excess baggage some mud has stuck to their shoes making it hard to keep going. For another thing, one special person, the one who started them on their athletic journey is telling them that they can do it - just like he has done it before. So what if it is hard: keep going because that is what competing in such contests
is all about. The writer to the Hebrews tells us that the challenges that we face in our Christian journey are not unique. Countless others have made the same journey. Satan loves to plunge us into gloom by telling us our situation is painfully unique to us; that if only we were better people we wouldn’t be facing such difficulties - he is, as always, lying! The great people of faith that are mentioned in the previous chapter of Hebrews were all in a mess from time to time. The great roll call of faith is also a roll call of suffering. It seems the two go together. It is this crowd who urge us on and tell us that just because the journey may be hard at times it is not impossible. We have their word on it. Of course, we make it hard for ourselves by dabbling in things and attitudes that are not helpful. Sin here is likened to mud clinging to our shoes: it doesn’t aid progress but hinders it. We are urged to scrape the mud off our shoes, to put off anything that will slow us down or distract us on our journey to maturity. Running the Christian race can be hard enough without our making it harder because we want to cling to things that drag us off the path and bog us down.

The great clinching argument for perseverance is that Jesus himself is with us. He launched us on this journey and He is the goal of our journey, the One towards whom we grow. Jesus Himself has made the journey before us. He didn’t give up even though it was hard. Instead of looking around for easy ways out or looking down at the ground in despondency, we are to set our eyes on Jesus. He, and those other people of faith, have been here before us. Jesus was there at the start, will be there at the finish, and is ever present along the road. Don’t give up the journey! Give up what hinders the journey. Don’t look for ways out but look to Jesus. And hear the cheers of the crowd and the encouragement of Jesus as you press on. In this race, anyone and everyone who finishes is a winner!

A Happy 2016 to everyone! It looks to be an interesting year ahead. It is once again an election year, which has been the case almost every year in recent times! This time round it’s the Scottish Parliament elections and like many politicians at all levels I will be out knocking doors in support of my Moray colleague Richard Lochhead MSP. I have said in the past it is always an enjoyable experience. Our regular campaigning gets us out and about all over Moray, speaking to the people who have elected us in their own communities and that is hugely important in keeping on top of the issues that affect people in Moray on a day-to-day basis, which it can be all to easy to become detached from when you travel away to parliament every week. Keep an eye out for us doing the rounds and keep us informed when you see us!
Let me start by saying a very Happy New Year to you and yours! I hope you had an enjoyable festive period and you’ve now recovered. New Year resolutions are easily made and even more easily broken. But one resolution I think we can all make quite easily is to continue to waste less and recycle more. Homes across Moray, including my own, will be left with Christmas cards, trees, cardboard boxes, all ready to be disposed of. Every year we are finding better ways of stopping waste going to landfill and being ever more responsible for the wider environment. Moray folk continue to lead the way in Scotland in recycling and I hope that people will do their bit to keep up that fantastic record and dispose of waste from Christmas and New Year as responsibly as possible.
Angus Robertson MP
Richard Lochhead MSP

Recovery happens Arrows is the new drug and alcohol support service in Moray. Run by Quarriers, Arrows supports adults with problematic substance use, offering advice, information and treatment to support individuals in their recovery. Who is the Service for? Arrows is a service for anyone worried about alcohol and drug use, whether their own or a loved one’s. Substance use problems can develop over time, and it is important for individuals to recognise where drugs or alcohol are having an impact on their wellbeing, relationships or lifestyle. Support is available to anyone with concerns, no matter how small. At times it’s the friends, family or other people around an individual who may recognise their drug or alcohol issue first. Arrows can support friends and family to understand and discuss problematic substance use with their loved ones.
What support is available? Arrows offers a listening ear and provides advice and information for people facing addiction issues. Our one-to-one and peer group support helps to build motivation, set goals and manage addictions using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy approaches and Motivational Interviewing.
How do I access support? You can drop into our Elgin office during opening hours. We are located near the end of the High Street, with both a High Street entrance and side door entrance on Kilmolymock Close. Alternatively, you can call, text or email and we can arrange to meet with you at a convenient time and location to discuss support options.
Will I be anonymous? You can contact the service anonymously to speak to someone, and disclose your name or information on your own terms. We will only keep or share information about you with your consent and your on-going support will be agreed in partnership with you. We do have a duty to share information where we have concerns that you or an individual are at risk of harm.
Will you involve my family or friends? We recognise the benefits of including family members and loved ones in accessing support and on-going recovery. We can discuss this with you should you wish to include a family member or friend, or you yourself wish to be included as a supportive factor in a loved one’s recovery.

INNES HOUSE
Weddings and Corporate Entertainment A Unique place for any Occasion It is difficult to imagine a more romantic setting for your wedding than a 17th century house set in a sheltered walled garden. However, Innes is not just a stunning venue which you and your guests will never forget, but also offers a wholly flexible programme to enable you to plan your day exactly as you would like. Every wedding is unique and tailor-made for each couple. You may hold the ceremony here in the garden or in one of the two beautiful reception rooms. After the service your guests can wander around the gardens whilst you have your photographs taken in these tranquil, romantic surroundings. The reception and dinner may be held in the East Dining Room or larger parties can be held in our marquee extension which covers a walled garden complete with a summer house for the bar and a fountain around which the tables are set. After dinner you may enjoy dancing or other entertainment and then drive away down the tree lined avenue and look back on a magnificent floodlit house. Alternatively, you and some of your guests may stay the night in one of our splendidly appointed bedrooms and leave after a leisurely breakfast the next morning.
Offer extended! Any couple booking their wedding within six months of their wedding date, will be offered complimentary wedding night accommodation along with a 'Champagne Toast' upgrade of their chosen drinks package
