Pastoral Letter and Church Meetings A new Associate Minister told his colleague of his fear that parishoners might try to ply him with drink when he visited them over New Year and if they did so he would feel most insulted. The wise parish minister replied, “Well, if anyone insults you by offering you a drink, just you swallow the insult!” Now, this same pious Associate Minister was the only one in the town who had not been taken to the court by the local policeman for committing various minor offences. However, no matter how often he stopped the Associate Minister in his car, the policeman could never find any legal fault against him. On New Year’s Day, the policeman was walking along the main street when the Associate Minister arrived at the church on a bike which Santa had delivered. The policeman pulled him over and checked the bike’s tyres and lights but everything about the bike was legal. The policeman asked the minister, “How is it that I can never catch you out like the rest of the locals?” “Ah well,” replied the minister, “that’s because I always have the Lord travelling with me.” The policeman shouted with glee, “Got you! Two on a bike!” As we journey through this New Year we can choose to travel alone, leaving the

Christ shut away with the Christmas decorations until we take him out again this December, or we can choose to travel on a spiritual tandem with Him. Sadly, the Western world in which we live is now an unholy rat race where we can get knocked off our spiritual bikes as men and women speed past us, driving their lives dangerously to acquire expensive luxuries at whatever price, overloading with their own selfinterest of earning bonuses and claiming expenses. They wear the latest designer sunspecs to save them from the glare of the needs of the poor in this country or, indeed, in other countries where the ordinary man or woman would find the sum of one month’s bonus alone quite unbelievable. It’s a wonder we don’t hear Jesus screaming, “I’m a celebrity - get me out of here!” Of course, when we journey with Christ we do need our daily rest in the shelter which He provides for us. The Hebrew noun for God’s “presence” is “Shekinah” - and so the Israelites found on their wilderness wanderings that God travels with ordinary men, women and children and camps with them. St. John adopted this picture of God when he wrote, “The Word was made flesh

and DWELT AMONG US, full of grace and truth.” Those of us who travel with Christ will discover that in the very lowest he finds the highest. Indeed, this is where Jesus looked for the glory of God - in the rush of world commercialism and politics, in the turning wheels of evil, poverty and depravity, in the tents of sickness and death. Into an unholy rat race where life was cheap Jesus brought an obedient, serving spirit, giving glory to God in the highest in the lowest. Let us travel with him throughout this year that, wherever we pitch our tents, we bring the Presence of God to all. “Lord, who shall dwell in your tent? Who shall live on your holy hill? He who travels by righteousness, and speaks truth in his heart; he who doesn’t slander with his tongue, nor does evil to his friend, nor casts slurs against another; he who doesn’t lend out his money for usury, nor take a bribe against the innocent. He who does these things shall never be shaken.” (Psalm 15) With Jesus as our travelling companion, our spiritual tandem will be less likely to take a wobbly! Dr Kay Gould Keit h Chu rch of Scotland

Have you made up your own "God"? God is Holy and He demands something from us. He wants us to put our faith in His Son for salvation. Many people today think that they will be in Heaven as long as they don’t commit any heinous crimes. But the Bible teaches that "all have sinned and come short of the glory of God." (Romans 3:23). We have all – you & me, everyone - fallen short of God’s moral standards. We have all broken His laws, and our sin makes us unfit for heaven. Only by personally accepting Christ as our own Lord and Saviour – believing that he died for OUR sins and was raised for OUR justification, and forsaking our sins to live in subjection to Him – can we approach this Holy God. The Bible says "He that believeth on the "You turn things upside down, as if the potter were Son (Jesus Christ) hath everlasting life: and he that thought to be like the clay." Isaiah 29:16 believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.”(John 3:35-36) Some have turned God into a loving Santa Claus What have you done then with Jesus which is called who showers us with good things when we are nice. Christ? When we are naughty, however, He isn’t quite as generous. Perish the thought that He would ever God is Just and will by no means pass by sin. punish us! He is a loving God. They think that in the You may not like thinking about this, but the Bible states end He will forgive everyone…except the Hitlers and that God has appointed a day in which He will judge you the Stalins. by that man (Jesus Christ) whom He has appointed. Each of us will personally meet with God one day. We Others have made God into a family doctor. He is will either meet Him in our sins and be judged by Him, there when we need Him. Most of the time we can and be cast into the lake of fire, or if we are saved, we will get on quite well without Him. In fact, we rarely even meet Him clothed in the righteousness of His Dear Son, think about Him unless we have a problem. But when so that when God looks at us He no longer sees our sin, misfortune strikes, they want God to hear their call for but instead sees us clothed in the righteousness of Christ help and come to their rescue. . "He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, (John 3:18). Still others have formed God into a watchmaker. He created the universe, set it in motion and then God is Gracious and Merciful and has given us ample they think He sat back to watch it tick away on its time and opportunity to accept His one way of salvation. own. Have we formed our own opinions about who God is; what He is like, what type of lifestyles He approves of and whom He will forgive? Are we making up our own “God”? Have we turned things upside down ?

If we really want to know what God is like and what He thinks and expects of us, we must be willing to set aside our opinions and listen to what He has to say about Himself. We must turn to God’s Word, the Bible. What does the Bible say about God – the God with whom we have to do?

Here’s tae a guid 2012 for a’body! I can’t really claim to be fluent in Doric or, indeed, any dialect of Scots but like most folk around the country I use phrases and words that have seeped into the brain over the years, perhaps from reading the obligatory Broons and Oor Wullie annuals around Christmas and New Year and, more recently, the Chewin’ the Fat and Still Game Christmas specials! It has struck me over the festive period the importance that humour plays in helping to maintain our traditional language and culture. It is particularly important in financially tough times that can be very stressful for families and individuals that we have that humour which gives us a bit of valve to release the pressures that build up each day. In that vein I wish everyone a bit of humour through 2012.

A Happy New Year to one and all! Certainly, from my own perspective,2012 looks to be an exciting year, not least because of a house move (albeit only a couple of miles away) in a matter of weeks! 2012 is also set to be an exciting year in terms of the constitutional debate that is happening in Scotland. It is an exciting time to be in politics with the mix of day-to-day issues combined with the very long-term and strategic decision that will face the people of Scotland in the referendum. All in all 2012 will be a busy and challenging time for most folk and wish everyone power to their elbow in their own challenges.

Chef’s Confidential Chocolate and Berry Roulade Ingredients 150g Caster Sugar 6 large eggs 50g Cocoa Powder 500g mixed frozen fruit (thawed) 50ml Sloe Gin 250ml Double Cream 1 tablespoon Caster Sugar 1 heaped teaspoon of Ground Arrowroot Icing sugar for dusting 1 x 27cm x 22cm baking tin / swiss roll tin 2cm deep baking parchment 1.Lightly grease the baking tin and line with the baking parchment 2.Using two bowls separate the eggs with the whites in one bowl and the yolks in another. Whisk the egg yolks with an electric whisk until they start to thicken. Add the caster sugar and beat until fully mixed. Stir in the cocoa powder. Wash and dry thoroughly the electric beaters. 3.In the separate bowl beat the egg whites until they stand in soft peaks. Fold gently in to the chocolate mixture. 4.Pour in to the lined baking tin and bake in the centre of a preheated oven at 180°C for 20 minutes until it has risen and springy to touch. Remove from the oven and leave in the tin until completely cooled. 5.Place the thawed frozen fruit into a sieve and strain the juice in to a bowl. Place the fruit and one tablespoon of the juices in to a pan with the Sloe Gin and one tablespoon of caster sugar, and heat to simmering point. Mix the Ground Arrowroot with a little of the reserved fruit juice to a paste before stirring in to the fruit mixture to thicken. Allow to cool completely. 6.Place a sheet of greaseproof or baking parchment on to a clean dry service and dust with icing sugar. Turn out the chocolate roulade on to this, and carefully peel off the baking parchment. 7.Spoon the fruit mixture on to the chocolate roulade in a thin layer. Whip the cream to form soft peaks and spoon over the fruit mixture. 8.Roll up the roulade as tightly as you can and place on a serving dish. Chill until you are ready to serve. Don't worry if it cracks as this adds to character of the dish. For a really decadent finish, drizzle melted chocolate over the roulade! Penny Ellis, Owner Knockomie Hotel, Forres tel: 01309 673146

Dreaming of... ...Vietnam and Cambodia

In these days where people are looking for more exotic destinations, Vietnam and Cambodia are among the next popular countries to travel to. Vietnam offers a fantastic range of places to see and visit, whether you are looking for sightseeing, beaches or a touring holiday. In the city locations an organised tour is a good way to help you become orientated. If you want to explore independently there are a whole array of taxis and 'cyclos' which like a modern day rickshaw offer a novel and fun way to get around. World events have inevitably cast their shadow across this country, which was for so many years the subject of news bulletins rather than travel brochures. In the last 20 years this charming nation of people has opened its doors to visitors. Not only does Vietnam have a variety of places to see, but it also enjoys a vast and beautiful coastline, mist shrouded mountains, mighty rivers and cascading waterfalls. Whether your passion is for history, scenery, food or culture the delicate tapestry of this nation will offer you all of this and much more besides. Hanoi is the capital city of Vietnam, and one of the hidden gems of South East Asia. It retains an elegance and charm not often found in this part of the world. Enjoy in particular the city's French influence, seen in fine old colonial buildings and tree lined boulevards. The vibrant and dynamic Ho Chi Minh city, formerly Saigon, is the largest and most energetic city in Vietnam, and the cultural heart of the nation. Hoi An is a well preserved trading port dating back to the 15th century, and the Mekong Delta and Cu Chi Tunnels (once home to 10,000 people) are well worth visiting. Cambodia was for many years off limits for travellers but now welcomes them with open arms. This magical land boasts ancient temples, dense forests, glorious beaches and a captivating culture and history. The most famous of the country's ancient sites is Angkor. This awe inspiring construction is quite rightly named as one of the 'Seven wonders of the world'. By travelling further afield you can enjoy lazy sun kissed beaches in Sihanoukville, sleepy towns and spectacular national parks. The evocatively named Phnom Penh is a beautiful city full to the brim with charmingly dilapidated colonial heritage. There is also a vibrant riverside promenade and a whole selection of cafes and restaurants. It is important to remember that with developing countries the tourism infrastructure is not as refined as in other places in the region. Hotel standards vary enormously and can be subject to delays and changes. Vietnam and Cambodia are two fantastic countries waiting to be discovered – we should all go before they become tourist traps and become spoilt.

Great Tit

One of the beauties of birdwatching is that you can do it from the comfort of your own home, especially at this time of year when the temperatures drop and snow covers the ground. Any bird seed that is put out will be a magnet for any birds in the area. Two of the most common species to visit your bird table and feeders are the Blue and Great Tit. The Blue tit is the smaller of the two and very dapper with its bright blue crown black eye stripe and white cheeks. Its breast and belly are yellow whilst the back and tails are lovely blue/green. The male and female plumage is slightly different with the males wings being a deeper ultramarine blue compared to the females lighter medium blue, but this difference can be very slight and unless you have birds together to compare can be very subjective!

Blue Tit

The Great tit is a sleek powerful looking bird; it too has white cheeks and a blue/grey back and tail. However the pure white cheek is surrounded by a jet black head, neck and throat and when seen in good light these black feathers have a beautiful glossy blue sheen to them. The male and female are easier to tell apart with the male having a broad black band extending unbroken from the black throat down the breast before spreading out to a large black patch between the legs, and the female having a less well defined black band and patch between the legs. Both birds are a colourful visitor to your garden and can be viewed to quite close range. Study them closely and you soon see their different characteristics, the Blue Tits being the Cheeky Chappies of the bird table, plus by providing a regular supply of food you will helping them survive the harsh weather. Next month we will be sticking to the basics looking at Greenfinch and Siskin. So until then Good birding!
