173 years ago on 4th July 2018 Thomas John Barnardo was born in Dublin, Ireland, the son of a furrier - a strongly religious family originally from Germany. By his twenties, Barnardo started opening schools for orphans left destitute by an outbreak of Cholera and by the time of his death at the age of 60 his organisation looked after 8,500 children in 96 locations. Barnardo’s still exists today of course and was recently quoted as running some 900 local services and is reckoned to be the largest UK children’s charity spending some £200m per annum.

Words by the Wayside “Because they believed not in God, and trusted not in His salvation.” (Psalm 78:22)
Reader, the greatest sin is not doing our own will, but omitting to do God’s Will. He is not willing that any should perish but that all men and women should repent of their sins and come to the knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ as their Saviour. What will all your pleasures and possessions avail you if you have not Jesus Christ as your Saviour? There is peace for you now through Jesus Christ, He is Lord of all.

Pastoral Le er & Church Meetings Have you got a leg to stand on? People are asked that to see if you have got a good reason to trust what you believe to be true. Or they are asked that to prove your statements are true. If we are telling the truth, then we do indeed have a leg to stand on. If we have the skill and experience and the resources to do a task, then we’ve got a leg to stand on. Yesterday at church we celebrated Trinity Sunday. It is always the Sunday after Pentecost when we celebrated the gift of God’s Holy Spirit to come in the place of Jesus earthly presence. I had some little stools from the Keith North Kirk Shop to show the children. Unlike a milking stool with three legs, these animal-face carved wooden stools have four legs. I told the children that these stools remind me of God sitting down with us to do things together. God the Father, Jesus Christ the Son of God, and the Holy Spirit the presence of God all come and sit with us and share their divine company with us. So whatever we are doing, we have good company
to do it with. Sitting on the stool, I could imaging God saying to me, ‘It's a lovely day today And whatever you've got to do I'd be so happy to be doing it with you’ Then we thought in church about some places in the gospel where God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit were all working together, but needed someone on earth to complete the job. The Trinity worked together to bring Jesus from heaven to earth – but they needed Mary to play her part, and she did’ The Holy Spirit will come upon you. The power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the Holy One to be born will be called the Son of God.' (Luke 1:35). The Trinity worked together to have Jesus baptised in the River Jordan – but they needed John the Baptist to play his part, and he did. The Holy Spirit descended upon Him in bodily form like a dove, and a voice came out of heaven, "You are My beloved Son, in You I am wellpleased.' (Luke 3:22). The Father, Son and Holy Spirit were all there when there was a hungry crowd to

feed. They needed a boy to share his lunch to make the miracle happen, and he did. The Holy Trinity wanted to heal a paralysed man, but they waited till four friends brought him to Jesus. There will be many times when we are needed to make up a foursome (and not just at golf or for a game of whist or bridge). I’m thinking of the times that God has a plan. God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit will all play their part, but they are waiting for one of us to play our part to make the plan work. Parliament Blog & Tide Times The clock is ticking on sellers who impose unfair delivery charges on people in Moray, just because of our postcode. I recently contacted online retailer Amazon who I spoke with after a Scottish Affairs Committee where they gave evidence on this unfair practice. I have been passing on cases of constituents faced with extra delivery costs, despite the goods being advertised with free UK delivery. The retailer has made it clear to third party sellers that this is not an acceptable practice. I have been in touch with them again after it transpired that a resident in Hopeman was slapped with delivery charge of £70 for a product that costs less than a fiver. Clearly this shocking charge to deliver to Moray was in breach of Amazon’s code of conduct. After I raised this case with Amazon they investigated and concluded that the seller acted outwith their new code of practice, warned them and the correct delivery charge is now advertised. I’m encouraged by the cross-party efforts to address this issue and I will continue to fight this until retailers get the message loud and clear. In Moray we say no to unfair delivery charges.
As Minister for Childcare & Early Years, I am absolutely delighted that 2018 is Scotland’s Year of Young People. This is a global first – a ground-breaking, themed year that will celebrate all our young people in Scotland, wherever they live. Events are already underway across Scotland and there are loads of great opportunities for young folk to get involved here in the Highlands. You can find out information about events happening in your areas here: yoyp2018.scot. If there is one aspiration that I hope we might share for 2018, it is to ensure that our young people feel and believe that they are valued, wanted and vital to our country’s future and that their voices are heard and listened to.

For the last few years I have been working side by side with local ambulance staff to campaign for an increase in resources in Moray, so I was extremely pleased that the Scottish Ambulance Service has announced is set to recruit eight new ambulance staff locally. Moray’s ambulance crews have been under significant pressure over the last few years due to an increase in demand for services and more hospital transfers having to be carried out between Dr Gray’s and ARI. Over recent years, I’ve been regularly meeting SAS management and raising this campaign at the highest levels of government to support the local ambulance staff, so I’m delighted that our efforts have paid off. These additional posts, alongside the end to call working at Dufftown have the potential to really transform the service in Moray and will help deliver the best possible care for patients. Our local ambulance staff deserve a huge amount of credit for the work they’ve put in to making the case for increased resources, their sustained efforts and determination have been central to improvements being delivered.

SpotLIGHT Garden
Brought to you by:
Watering Lawns – in Scotland - really? Yes really, especially along the sandy soils and low rainfall of the Moray coast. The last two springs have seen prolonged dry spells in our area, and this is not unusual. We often get prolonged high pressure influence at this time of year, which cuts off the prevailing westerly fronts coming in off the Atlantic. It might not always seem warm and dry as we sometimes get a cold haar coming ashore. But even then, any rainfall amounts can be negligible. Watering lawns is important at this time for a number of reasons. They will quickly turn brown and dry looking, as do golf course fairways and rough, and other public grassed areas, Lawns are trying to wake-up after a winter hibernation and may have been traumatised by scarifying and raking activity in the off-season. Many gardeners will put down a spring feed (as do GreenThumb) and this will need activated by watering. No watering, and nothing much will happen. Many of you will have sprinklers, but they are usually in the garage! Get them out and hook them up. Most lawns will appreciate a watering for 20 mins each evening so they stay damp through the night. Daytime watering is of less
value as more is lost to evaporation. Nowadays, you can readily buy a timer for £20 which will automatically turn sprinklers and hoses on and off. In Scotland, our water consumption is paid for in our community charge. In England, typically water is metered and charged for. We are lucky, it’s pre-paid, so why not use it. GreenThumb also have a Water Conserver product which can significantly increase the time water molecules are held in the lawn. It works on a similar principle to products for planters and hanging baskets. There are more details on the website at www.greenthumb.co.uk.
You can get more information and pics at www.greenthumb.co.uk, or at www.rhs.org.uk (Royal Horticultural Society). Alastair Watt
For more information about our annual lawncare plans from just £11.25 per mth, plus useful downloads and photos, go to www.greenthumb.co.uk. Although GreenThumb is a multi-award winning national franchise, and is the runaway leader in the sector with one million lawns being treated, we are the family-run local franchise covering the wider Moray Firth area. Adult Fiction
Strange Neeting By Susan Hill Set in WWI, a young officer returns to the Front to find his division almost unrecognisable. His commanding officer is an alcoholic, there is a new adjutant and several of his close friends have been killed. But there is David Barton. As yet untouched and unsullied by war, fresh-faced and radiating charm. As the pair approach the front line, bloodied by the deaths of their fellow soldiers, their friendship deepens. But as the reality of the violence sets in, the men know that they will soon be separated... A poignant novel on human love as war and the pity of war.

How to survive the end of the world By Aaron Gillies There are plenty of books out there on how to survive a zombie apocalypse, all-out nuclear war, or Armageddon. But what happens when it feels like the world is ending every single time you wake up? That's what having anxiety is like. From helping readers identify the enemy, to safeguarding the vulnerable areas of their lives, the impact of anxiety is examined, and readers given some tools to fight back - whether with medication, therapy, CBT, coping techniques, or simply with a dark sense of humour.

ooking out on my garden as I write this, I am enjoying the spectacle of a very happy Clematis montana, a vigorous deciduous climber that is looking great this year. It is funny how garden plants can have good and bad years, and a timely reminder for me not to panic when some of my other plants are not doing so well. It seems that some plants enjoyed the cold winter we had – some internal plant processes actually require a cold winter to stimulate growth and flowering in a process known as vernalisation. Other plants in my garden are not having their finest years, but I am keeping them watered and fed and am keeping the faith that they will come back stronger than ever in time. However, ever-watchful of pests and diseases, I do a daily tour of the garden to keep an eye on any issues that might suggest a deeper problem. I recently made the discovery that rabbits enjoy eating my Rudbeckia fulgida, so that adds to the list of purchases I will not be making again! In the months of spring I happily add nitrogen fertiliser to my garden, in the form of granules and also well-rotted horse manure. However, from July I stop this and will only apply less nitrogen-heavy fertilisers such as bonemeal.

Finally, a few tips for your lawn. During the height of the growing season you may find you need to mow your lawns weekly, but as July moves on you will find growth slowing. Regardless, the key rule is not to let the weeds set seed, and leaving a gap of over two weeks between cuts normally means this happens. If weeds set seed they will gradually outcompete the grass plants in your lawn. In times of dry weather, do not forget to raise the blades on your mower to reduce stress on the lawn. (Indeed, it is best not to cut your grass too short generally for the same reason). In times of wet weather, don’t worry too much about not mowing damp grass with your petrol mower. If it needs doing, just cut it – any muddy marks or tears to the grass are only temporary, and unless you’re wanting a super-formal lawn you do not need to worry too much. To find out more about what I am up to you will find me on Instagram or you can follow my blog which you will find at
