PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS “Ex malo bonum” “Happenstance evil must sometimes be stoically endured, but if there exists within us the means to combat it, and indeed to conquer it, then combat and conquer we must.” (Who said that?!) Prior to Christmas, Kay came up with the brilliant idea of asking if those members of the congregation who were considering giving us Christmas presents, could instead give a donation to the medical team who have been treating me for cancer these last few years - to Mr. Hussain and his team at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary’s E.N.T. - Maxillofacial Unit, to enable them to update some of their vital equipment. And so, at the end of my most recent consultation at the Maxillofacial Unit, I presented Mr. Hussain and his ENT team with the monies donated primarily by the congregation but also by the community. There were gasps of surprise and delight from the team when they were told that the final amount of the cheque was £8,500, and they asked for their sincere thanks to be passed on. Mr. Hussain has written, “Thank you very much indeed…. Wonderful! This could go a long way towards helping the department getting up to date.”

He commented that in all his years he has only once received a cheque for a higher sum, and that had been the result of a hospital inter-departmental effort. Given the storms of life, the options available to us are either to sink under them without a fight, or to try to salvage some good out of evil. It is the case that although my part in this is only incidental, yet out of the fact of my illness, the congregation and others within the community were galvanised into accomplishing a great good which will benefit countless future patients. (Certainly it is a greater good than could have been achieved by receiving countless Christmas presents of socks, scarves, and gloves!) “Ex malo bonum”. Every Sunday in church worship, congregations of all denominations celebrate the supreme case in point that the evils of crucifixion and death were superseded by the good of the Resurrection and eternal life for all. “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, for in his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead (1 Peter 1:3).” “This is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son (1 John 5:11).” It is this promise of eternal life which can

inspire us to keep attempting to ensure that good may come out of evil. (Oh, and if you’re still pondering over the opening quote? - well, sorry, it came from no inspired theologian or profound philosopher - just me endeavouring to affect depth. And if I was unsuccessful in that attempt, then let me compound that failure with this tale (providentially medicallyorientated) of good coming from bad:a worried mother reported to her doctor that her daughter lay in bed all day eating yeast and car polish. “Don’t worry,” said the doctor reassuringly, “one of these days she’ll rise and shine.”) With every blessing to you,

COMMUNITy COUNCIL NEWS ExTRACTS FROM THE MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF 1ST APRIL 2013 OF KEITH COMMUNITy COUNCIL POLICE MATTERS There was a matter of children coming to Green Court which have now been dealt with. There have been complaints of Lorries not using the lorry park and parking on residential streets. They cause obstructions for other traffic which may need to manoeuvre round about them. Reports of cars parking in lanes longer than they should be. Numbers to be taken reported to police. Unloading is allowed for 30 mins. There were no police at tonight’s meeting. JM received the updated news letter from Sergeant Mulloy. There were 29 dishonesty crimes including two thefts outwith the town and one at a commercial property. There have been fuel & vehicle assessory thefts. Number for non emergencies is 101. The only notable difference with the new police force will be the disappearance of the Grampian Police logo. Operation Avon will be operated with other agencies on the issue of youth disorder. Matters Arising Drains on A96 – SC has emailed Ralph at Bear about this. The hydrant on Regent Square has been repaired.CL will contact the water board about the one at 37 Moss Street and 75 Regent Street. JM read out a letter that has been sent to Moray Council. Tracey Rae has passed it to various people but JM has had no reply as yet. The letter was about the proposed cuts to the buses and toilets. GC said the toilets are remaining open until the qualities impact assessment has been completed. There was a discussion about when the buses are stopped how much it would cost a pensioner to use taxis in a week to get to shops and various hospital appointments. It cost £45. Super loos were discussed again as replacement for closure of toilets. Funding would need to be sourced for this. The new signs on the lanes have been going up. Questions about the names have been asked. The names were given to the lanes by local councillors, Keith Community Council and the Heritage Group back in 2007. Funding from the lanes has come

from Tesco. A leaflet produced by CARS may be produced to explain the meanings of the lanes names. The current manager of Tesco is to go along to KSRP meetings. He wants to be involved in the community. He would like the Community Board to be displayed in Tesco with local school children helping out with it. He has a meeting room available for any community group who wishes to use it. A race is going to be organised. Funds to be made available to a charity in Keith. Correspondence There were various correspondences including an email from Andrew Stewart who is establishing a steering group on the way forward for sustainable transport. He is asking for ideas and will be holding a meeting. A survey from Moray Licensing Board to be completed b 31.5.2013 An email about costings for the Lanterns that could be made by local schoolchildren and used at the Xmas fayre. This would cost nothing to Community Council.. Kinloss and Rafford communities – Hall Tales. Sharing experiences and reminiscing was the theme. Angela Hyland from Heldon Community Council submitted an email applauding the good work they had done on a project that the Community Payback team has done for their community. An email from Ann Davidson from REAP saying they are trying to organise a farmers market possibly on Mid Street & to promote a session in the North Church Hall about sowing seeds, planting and feeding the soil. An appeal has been made for the application for two wind turbines to be put up at Backmuir Keith. An email from a representative regarding the Blackhillock development. There are apprenticeships available. Visit the SSE website to find out more. Email with planning permission - no objections to a small wind turbine at the Keith Station or to the extended car park at the station.

Community Capacity Building Training 2013 – Courses that people can attend in most cases for free. Types of courses incl. first aid, intro to working with children & youths, cooking, jewellery making Play, Talk, Read, Activity Bus Tour is to be circulating Moray in April. Email Hannah Mitchell - hannah@workingonwheels.org. COMMUNITY COUNCILLORS UPDATE Mrs Jane Martin – Planning and Licensing A resident in the Cuthil is to take on a piece of waste ground near her property. There were no objections to this. Mr Charles Lawson – Roads & rights of way There are steps that are crumbling at Westerton Court. The path at the rear of Regent court going to the golf course is in a mess. People are not going on it and going onto the golf course instead. Balloch Trust would have maintained it in previous years. ACTION – GC will deal with matter. Mrs Marguerite Cruickshank – Signs and street furniture Costings are being sought for the new signs to promote Keith shops Mrs Margaret McDonald – Cleansing JM sent a letter praising a council employee. The employee of Moray Council has been dealing with the dog mess problem. It was pointed out that in the Northern Scot that people were being fined for allowing their dogs to make a mess. Mrs Nancy Cruickshank – Housing GC hasn`t received the letter about the wobbly slabs near a property in Viewfield. Nothing has been done yet and they wobble and are dangerous. Cllr Gary Coull Gelatine has been put onto the Institute on Mid Street to deter the ongoing problem with the pigeons roosting and making a mess of the pavement and the building. Hopefully this solution works. Christmas Lights Meeting to be held soon. JM had a suggestion of Lanterns that the local school children could make. They could follow Santa up the street after the Fayre. Minutes prepared by Susan Hutcheon

review “friendly and efficient service...” A warm and welcoming atmosphere is what greets diners on arrival at the Royal Hotel & Restaurant in Keith. The dining room and its anteroom are up a short flight of stairs and offer comfortable chairs and tasteful decoration – an ambience that whets the appetite for what one expects to be a meal to relish. Every day the restaurant has an excellent choice of specials as well as the more formal a la carte menu. The Royal specialises in fresh Scottish seafood and succulent rib-eye steaks, and we were told that the cranachan is to-die-for. We chose to be a little more delicate in our menu selection. To start we picked Butternut Squash and Ginger Soup – a warming, creamy and sweetish flavour with a faint ginger under-taste – extremely moreish, and a soup for which you would like to borrow the chef’s recipe. The Hot Goat’s Cheese was covered in a subtle herb breadcrumb coating that gave crunch to the smooth, clean and creamy cheese. The accompanying cranberry sauce was a rich and fruity delight to the palette. Seared Salmon fillets in caper butter beckoned, and the crispy skin and softness of the salmon was more than complemented by the vegetables and the smoothness of the melted caper butter. This was not for the faint-hearted – this was a man-sized portion (as indeed were they all). On our other plate was a Rack of Lamb, cooked to a professional and perfect pinkness. The creamed potatoes were silky smooth and spiced with mustard seeds, while the medley of vegetables was cooked to perfection – nothing soft and flabby here. The wine list was more than ample and diverse, offering crisp white sauvignon or chenin blanc to fully robust Chateau Neuf du Pape, as well as bubbly like Moet et Chandon should you be in celebration mode.

Restaurant Review by Karen & Peter Evans

The service was wonderful and ultra-efficient throughout the evening, and the friendliness was so commendable considering that too many hotel restaurants are renowned for being cold and formal. Would we choose to take our friends and family to The Royal for dinner? Emphatically, yes. We would recommend the warm atmosphere, the friendly and efficient service, the chefs and their delicious menus – don’t just take our word, book a table or two and enjoy your own evening at The Royal.

PARLIAMENT BLOG & TIDE TIMES

“Parliament Blog Elgin BID’s showcase event in Elgin Town Hall last month deserves a mention. It was a great family event and I was persuaded to become a model for the night and show off highland-wear from local shops. There was some great backstage banter at the event and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. Congratulations to the organisers and especially to Out of the Darkness Theatre Group and all those on stage (who had far more to remember than my own walk-on/walk-off role!). The event was once again a great success and did exactly what it said on the tin by showcasing local businesses in an innovative and fun way.

While I am always at pains to point out the dangers of over-consumption of alcohol it is also important to point out the positives of the industry, particularly here in Moray where we produce a huge amount of high quality alcohol product that is generally not associated with anti-social behaviour. In that respect it has been great to see three breweries springing up in quick succession in Moray, producing exactly that - high quality products for those with a taste for quality and complexity and for a drink that is to be savoured! We have the Speyside Craft Brewery in Forres, the Windswept Brewing Company in Lossiemouth and, most recently, Brewmeister in Keith. A solid sweep right across the county. The great thing about specialist breweries is that they are more of a compliment to each other than competition and having three is a fantastic addition to Moray’s booming food and drink sector.

Christ for Me Let others build their hopes of eternal happiness upon whatever foundation they please; my choice is made – it is CHRIST FOR ME. Some are resting upon their blameless character, or upon their exemplary manner of life. Others are trusting the Church and its ordinances – membership, baptism, communion, long service, or official position. I dare not build upon anything that I have done, nor on anything a fellow-sinner might do for me. My only hope is the perfect sinless work of a perfect sinless Saviour: it is CHRIST FOR ME. My nature is corrupt (Psalm 51:5 , Ephesians 2:1-3). My best is stained with sin (Isaiah 64:6 , Romans 3:23). I need a new heart, a new birth, a new life, if I am ever to enter heaven (John 3:3 , 1 Peter 1: 3&4). The work of my salvation required the Son of God, Himself God (John 1:1&2, Colossians 2:9); to take to Himself sinless manhood (John 1:14, Philippians 2:5-8), in order to die for my sins upon the cross of Calvary (Isaiah 53:5&6, 1 Peter 3:18). Only by this means could I be redeemed from the power and penalty

of sin (Ephesians 1:7), and be born of the Spirit into God’s own family (John 1:12&13). That is why it is CHRIST FOR ME. Soon we must die, or else the Lord will come again, and then every hope will be submitted to its final test. How infinitely thankful I will then be, when by the merits of Christ’s precious blood I am transported safe into His presence, that I built upon a sure foundation and not upon a foundation of sand. How grateful then, that my decision, made in life, was CHRIST FOR ME. And when time shall cease and the day of judgement shall have run its solemn course, then shall the true Rock of Salvation tower in solitary grandeur over the wreckage of every blighted hope, delusive doctrine and human endeavour. While all those who built upon any other foundation shall languish in hopeless torment and misery in the lake of fire., I shall reign with Christ in endless bliss and glory, not through any merit of my own but simply because by the mercy of God I was moved to decide - CHRIST FOR ME. All other hopes I completely and utterly abandon. I have counted the cost; I have weighed the alternatives; I have made my choice – in life, in death, and throughout eternity, it must be – and it is - CHRIST FOR ME.

Dreaming of...

SPAIN Costa Daurada in the Catalonia region of Spain is the home to Salou and Portaventura, a firm holiday favourite with families and couples looking for some sun just a short flight away. Salou is a bustling Spanish holiday resort with an abundance of bars, shops and restaurants to cater for every taste, a beautiful promenade and sandy beach. The public bus service around the area makes it very easy to explore the surrounding area, whether it is the short trip along the coast to Cambrill with its fresh seafood restaurants and peaceful surroundings, or a trip in the opposite direction towards Tarragona, to Bonavista where the Sunday market is held, which is frequented by locals and tourists alike. A visit to Salou would be incomplete without a trip to Portaventura, the theme park with its variety of rides and shows for people of all ages. Travel through the different worlds of China, Mexico, Polynesia, the Mediterranean and the Far West to experience the different concepts in each destination. For you thrill seekers Portaventura is also home to the tallest and fastest rollercoaster in Europe; you could easily spend a day here and leave half of the park undiscovered! An hours drive north of Salou is Barcelona, the capitol of Catalonia and the 2nd largest city in Spain. For a total contrast to your beach holiday in Salou a day trip to Barcelona is recommended. Spend the day wandering down Las Ramblas or exploring the city and discovering some of the stunning architecture designed by Gaudi, (highlights are the Sagrada Familia and the Park Guell). Last but not least, for any football fans, Camp Nou offers daily tours through the museum and stadium, with lots of photo opportunities, and even the chance to get your hands on the Champions League Trophy.

Chef’s Confidential Strawberry & Cream Scones Is there anything more deliciously indulgent then the perfect cream tea? Freshly baked scones filled with jam, cream and strawberries & enjoyed on a sunny afternoon with a refreshing cup of tea. Give this recipe a try - it’s a real taste of summer. Ingredients: 450g self raising flour 120g butter Pinch of salt 60g caster sugar 15mls baking powder 2 medium free-range eggs A little milk To serve: 450g fresh Scottish strawberries 1 jar good quality strawberry jam (homemade is ideal!) 300mls fresh double cream, whipped to soft peaks A little icing sugar Pre-heat the oven to 220degC. Place the flour in a mixing bowl with the salt – rub in the butter until even crumbs form. Stir in the sugar and the baking powder. Break the eggs into a measuring jug and make up to 300mls with milk. Add enough of the egg/milk mix to form a soft, elastic dough. Tip onto a floured surface and bring together into a neat round – handle as lightly as possible. Roll out to a 2-3cm thickness, then cut into rounds using a 6cm fluted cutter – place on a large baking sheet. Bring all the dough scraps together and roll out again – cut further rounds and repeat until all the dough is used up. Place the scones into the hot oven, and bake for 10-12 minutes or until risen & golden. Remove to a wire rack, cover with a clean tea towel and leave to cool completely. Once cooled, split and fill with strawberry jam, whipped cream and strawberries – serve with a light dusting of icing sugar and extra strawberries on the side.

(Makes about 12 large scones)

Amazingly it is not gas or oil, nor solid fuelbut clean electric! All you need is a standard electricity supply and NO special night tariff. In Germany, Austria, Poland Russia, Eastern Europe and increasingly in the UK, more and more people are choosing to heat their homes and offices with this very special form of electric heating in preference to gas, oil, LPG or any other form of conventional central heating or night storage. When you see this incredible heating for yourself, you could be next! As you can see from the picture, the heating looks just like a conventional radiator but STOP! It is very, very different! Put simply that clunky central heating boiler that needs constant servicing and replacement parts isn’t the only choice any more! Now you can choose to heat your homes, offices or extensions or conservatories with this incredible German heating which provides individual control over every single room without the need for a central control or space to site a boiler. Now the

boiler space can become a valuable storage area! Installation takes minutes and running is completely clean with no danger of leakage, no holes through walls, no floor boards up and no tradesmen trundling around the house wielding pipe cutters, spanners, hammers, wrenches and dirty work-boots! This incredible German heating simply plugs in and that’s it! Job done! You can even do just one room or the whole house. Get your free info pack right now by calling 01343 819676 or online at www.elsco.co.uk This heating is NEW in Scotland yet in many parts of Europe it has been a mainstream form of heating for a long time.
